my theory has since been revised to thedas and satina both being satellites of the “primary moon,” a rocky planetary body. no long writeup. i lost my notes and such on all this years ago. alas.
Was anybody going to tell me Thedas has two moons or was I supposed to find that out while trying to research trade routes myself?
Anyway, I have thoughts about that and spent far, far too much of my night on this.
Laying it out:
We know the second moon is named Satina, but since we don’t know the name of the other, I’m going to call them the primary moon (big boy) and second moon (little guy) when I do refer to them directly. They would have different orbital periods (which should affect the calendar more, but whatever) and both have an equatorial orbit (like our moon does!). These are presumptions, but they’re also how things usually work. Especially considering that Thedas is habitable. That’s important to maintain.
Also, whenever I look at maps of Thedas in detail, I’m reminded that this has to be a teeny tiny planet. That’s not really relevant to this post, but it’s weird to think about.
The main thing covered here will be the effect of this on the tides, but first:
Flavor:
There are two moons in the sky! That’s neat and cool to look at! They would both reflect the sun’s light, so that would make nights brighter. This would have evolutionary effects, potentially, but that’s enough of a technicality in the fast and loose world of Thedas that I’ll pass it by right now. There would be more eclipses, which is also neat. Unfortunately, we never see both of them at once in the games, but here’s a mod to have two moons overhead in the Hissing Wastes.
Tidal effect:
This part is really long. Under the cut!
The primary moon, which we see in the sky in the Hissing Wastes, is either very large or very close in comparison to Earth’s moon (proportionally). Since Earth’s moon is improbably large, it’s more likely that it’s very close, which actually has a more significant effect on its tidal pull than size would (proximity > size; we see this IRL with how minimal the Sun’s affect is on Earth’s tides). The second moon is presumably smaller and further away, but its proximity still has a significant effect on tides.
Most of the time they would balance each other out to a relatively normal cycle, but high tides would be higher on average. Not catastrophically, but higher – and dramatically so when the moons enter orbital resonance (same place in orbit at the same time) and both of their gravitational pulls have affect at the same time!
Initially I thought that that would greatly impact coastal settlements and trade hubs, and it would, but not many that we’re super familiar with. Tides are greater with greater bodies of water, and a lot of the trade centers we see are around the Waking and Shining Seas (Kirkwall, Highever, etc.). They’re just little guys. Western Thedas is mostly landlocked as well, and all of Thedas is sub-equatorial; tidal pull with an equatorial moon decreases the further you are from the equator, since you’re further from the moon(s).
Let's look at some maps! Mostly using the map from Tevinter Nights for reference here:
Cities that aren't named are marked by little symbols that look like houses. I'll give crops of each location for a visual as we go, because everything is small.
Tumblr media
Other major coastal regions:
- Tevinter is predominantly coastal at this point in history, but the Nocen Sea isn’t enormous; Seheron is quite close on the other side; and the coast around the Arlathan forest isn’t populated.
Tumblr media
- The eastern Ander coast is paralleled across the Colean Sea by a Tevinter peninsula, if they actually make use of that coast.
Tumblr media
- Antiva isn’t notably populated north of the White Spire (the Antivan mountain, not the Orlesian Circle Tower, which has given me some grief); its coastal population is on the Rialto Bay.
Tumblr media
- Eastern Ferelden has a significant amount of coastline, but the Brecilian Forest blocks most of it off, and Gwaren (city south of the Forest) is far south enough that it’s probably bordering the planet’s Antarctic circle.
Tumblr media
- Those little northwestern Fereldan islands don't have coastal focuses. Image from the wiki used because Alamar's tiny.
Tumblr media
- Northern Seheron would be affected. We don’t know the concentrations of Seheron’s population. Much of Par Vollen would also be affected and the same holds true for them, but their technology (extremely seaworthy vessels, extreme perseverance, etc.) and cultural mindset lends to the idea that they would use the tides to their advantage strategically, as well as take advantage of the major boons spring tide would have on fishing! When the tide is coming in to its highest, it shakes things up and brings in all the fish.
Tumblr media
- Rivain isn’t notably populated east of its dominating mountains. Its major population centers are in the Southeast, on the Rialto Bay. Except Llomeryn. Rivain, as descendants of seafaring islanders, would have a long cultural history of being able to deal with this anyway. Why is Llomeryn (little house icon on the east coast of the southern island) on that side? I don’t know. It doesn’t make sense. It’s fine.
Tumblr media
- I’m sure that Estwatch is doing just fine. They can handle themselves.
- Wycome is a major fishing hot-spot, taking advantage of the fishy boons the tides provide.
- Hercinia is coping, I guess.
Tumblr media
In regards to coastal port cities on the Amaranthine ocean – the largest body of water on the map – a special situation may exist where they have ports designed to accommodate the very high high tides when they come in (how often would depend on the moons’ orbital periods and how often they are in orbital resonance). I’m sure there are examples of docks and ports designed like this from real life, and if anyone has info on that, hit me up.
This concludes the post about the implications of two moons in Thedas that nobody asked for!
Huge thanks to @feastforworms and @unshatters-your-teacup for science and input and humoring me on this.

Informal Thoughts on Universal Pantry Staples in Thedas
Yes, I'm thinking about food again. So, part of what I’m working on for the Thedosian food project I have is figuring out universal pantry staples for Thedas. I am largely working from canon, but I am also working from a watsonian perspective on what isn’t named canon. Which can be really hard because I have to look at BioWare and not try to explain why a tropical environment would not have an abundance of cherries, or how certain foods don't ship well even in modern terms and thus, no, Ferelden likely shouldn't have access to tomatoes. But hey, I'm working on the suspension of disbelief and trying to figure out how it could work in a world with magic, but where magic is feared and typically reserved for luxuries.
I also didn't include things that would spoil easy, such as: cherries, grapes, lemons, oranges, plums, tomatoes, ect. Essentially anything with a high water content that would spoil easy. But are also super common around Thedas. Mostly because when I think pantry, I think long term storage. I also tried to keep out dairy products and eggs. But there is a way to keep butter for prolonged periods of time, so it got in by a slim technicality.
A quick note: when entering the suggested or speculated portion of these listings, this is not accounting for all economic levels because to do so would mean next to nothing was universal.
Additionally, when it comes to spices, we know that the Avvar value "lowland" spices heavily and use them for special occasions. However, because they aren't staples I was hesitant to include them in these list but opted to do so for no other reason than an idea that if they can get to the Avvar, they are likely commonly available else where. So spices are marked with a *
The canonically stated staples
These are actually pretty sparse. They aren't typically directly called out, but these few are, and so they have their own little section. Outside of that, well it is mostly suggestion.
Barley (At times mentioned to be specifically Fereldan)
Elfroot
Grease
Lentils
Onions
Wheat
Some canonically suggested universal pantry staples due to their common appearance in recipes, use in abundance, use in hard times/as rations, and seen prolifically in-game:
Allspice*
Almonds
Apples
Basil (dried or fresh)
Bay Leaves*
Black Pepper* (Coarse and finely ground)
Butter (typically goat, but cows as well)
Cabbage
Carrots
Cheese
Chocolate
Cinnamon* (ground, whole stick, ect)
Cloves*
Cumin* (crushed, ground, grated, ect)
Dill Seeds*
Dried Beans
Dried Berries (currants, cranberries, raisins, ect.)
Dried Meat
Dried Peas
Fennel Seed*
Flour (typically wheat)
Garlic
Ginger
Ham
Honey
Jam
Leeks
Mace
Mint
Mustard Seed*
Nutmeg*
Oil (not specified)
Oregano (dried or fresh)
Parsley/Mild green herb
Pickled Vegetables
Potatoes
Salt (historically Orlesians in the highlands salted a dragon worth of meat on an annual basis)
Salted Meat
Squashes (Pumpkin and others)
Sugar (typically from sugar cane)
Thyme
Turnips
Vanilla
Vinegar
Wine (Most common seems to be red wine)
If you think I missed anything or have any recommendations or thoughts of your own, please do share! I would love to hear any thoughts on what you think would likely be staples in the pantries of Thedas. If you need to know what is available, you can check out this post I have listing all the flora currently mentioned in Thedas.

This is the hub for my characters and worldstates! For now, I’m only linking to my Dragon Age OCs. Click on the name and it will take you to the relevant tag! Worldstate One - “To the Victor Go the Toils”
Mahanon Tabris - My original Warden, his story is about themes of death, life, rebirth, and the blood of the baptism. His story is focused on gender, gendered violence, identity, and the resolve to live despite all else. You can also click here to go straight to his fic on AO3!
Elyon Andras - When Mahanon abandons the Grey Wardens in the aftermath of Origins, it is Elyon who is selected to take his place as the Warden-Commander of Vigil’s Keep. Elyon’s story is one of hope throughout despair, motherhood, and the loneliness of never being able to return home.
Laurent Surana - a Veteran of the Blight and a side character in Mahanon’s story throughout Origins. His focus picks up during the events of Dragon Age 2, as an unlikely companion to my Garrett Hawke in Kirkwall. His story focuses on romanticism, chivalry, knighthood, intrigue, and the lies one has to tell. His fic is on the way!
Iveani Lavellan - My Inquisitor, a Dalish somniari and rift mage who has slowly been blinded by his Dreamer abilities. Relying on his staff–all at once a magical conduit, a cane, and a polearm–he leads the way for the Dalish in the rapidly shifting political environment of Thedas. Worldstate Two - “Blood of the Covenant, Blood of the Womb” Naoise Cousland - The Warden I’m currently playing, his story focuses on the themes of loss, grief, vengeance, toxic masculinity, and politics, both noble and gendered. Not yet sure how his story ends, so join him along the way! Trystan Hawke - The parentified eldest sibling of the Hawke family, Trystan must take his father’s place in protecting Bethany from the Templars and dangers of Kirkwall. Angry, jealous, and demanding of the world and what it owes him, his relationships with his friends–and Anders–will shake the very foundations of Thedas. Jurian Amell - The younger cousin to Trystan, Jurian is everything that could be wanted in an Amell grandchild. A gifted mage, clever, and lovely to look at, his story is built off of the folktales of Fereldan into an epic saga that Kirkwall won’t ever forget. Arlan Trevelyan – The youngest child of the faithful and devout Trevelyan family, Arlan being a mage was a stain upon their honor and faith in the Chantry. What he knows about the inner workings of Thedosian politics will shape the Inquisition and its dealings for years to come.
Cas Meta – This link takes you to all META thoughts about all of my characters or the Dragon Age series itself, if you want to dig through my analyses and headcanons without the character spam!

Age of the Dragon Meta
Spoilers for most recent chapter
Twice in that last chapter, we had people invoking the Maker... but the one to answer was Alistair.
We had Corypheus daring people to call down their Maker - you cannot for he does not exist!  And at that precise moment, Alistair and Barbas arrive to challenge him.
And you had Cassandra making a vow to the Maker to lay down her life if necessary in order to fight Corypheus.  No evidence the Maker ever heard it... but Alistair did and could grant that bargain.
A silent Maker being replaced by a Daedric Prince who can grant wishes.  There’s something in that.
(Namely, in about a century or so’s time, a widely held belief that invoking Alistair of the Fifth Blight and Inquisition can get you your heart’s desire if your heart is true.... but dragged off to the Fade by demons if it isn’t.  Also you have to be nice to dogs.)
(Thedosian nations start passing wide-ranging animal welfare legislation at the same time, and the rulers in question suddenly all seem to have good fortune befall them.)

Well, sand in her face will definitely deter Astala from coming closer for a while XD XD XD It’s a crunch between her theeth, and not the nice kind of crunch U_U It will depend on what kind of a fight it is and waht causes it to determine if it gets physical though.
I was thinking what might’ve gotten the tension high enough for a fight to break out (because the feelings of betrayal and abandonment are always simmering in the background; something must’ve brought them to a boiling point), and I remembered that in your canon, Novhen stealths forward and gets bitten by the werewolves. That would rattle Astala, for sure, and potentially bring out her frustration over Novhen being so cavalier with his own life. The conversation could go something like this (in a very meta way, as in, what they mean, not what they’d actually be saying):
Astala: Stop doing dangerous things alone!
Novhen: Somebody has to do dangerous things, and better one dies than two.
Astala: Ma would be very disappointed.
Novhen: Would she? Part of the reason I’m doing things alone is because you left
And voilá, we have a fight! As long as Novhen’s thoughts wuld actually go that way, that is
Agreed that the end of NotB is the better moment for a fight such as this. And, Adaia would definiely be able to steer them a bit. She knows her children and the kind of faces they’re making at each other and at her tells a lot.
But if it’s this kind of fight, I don’t think Astala would get physical. She’s angry about Novhen getting hurt, she’s not gonna hurt him more. There might be verbal violence, or storming off. She might draw a comparison between the werewolves and the cult (because wolves and wolves, and she deems both a danger). But I think Novhen’s safe from getting bitten a second time XD XD XD One thing they might want to do though to avoid airing all of their family troubles and the cult business to the rest of their companions is switch over to rapid-fire Alfish. I think that would make for a cool effect and keep Ilanlas mercifully in the dark about the cult. As far as I’ve understood, he’d maybe understand every third word and every fourth would sound vaguely familiar, but he wouldn’t be able to make sense of it, right?
EDIT: Unless Alfish is the kind of language not intended for outside ears, be it because it's outright secret or just because it's weird to speak your own language in front of shem (because it's peivate or maybe because you might get cuffed over the head for it á la You're in Ferelden, speak the King's Tongue)
Astala’s gonna be very grateful that Novhen keeps his Thoughts and Opinions for himself right after UoSA. Later she’ll be interested to hear them 👀👀👀👀👀 They can talk about the erasure of elves from Thedosian history and Shartan as a historical person (and whether Shartan and Andraste were A Thing, if that’s an ok topic of conversation) over a glass of something. Probably alcoholic. Once Astala has settled in her current uncertainty regarding religion
Also, Solas does not deserve Novhen At All. If he does something other than inconvenience him, Astala’s gonna break an egg or attempt to. Would Novhen tell Astala if he found out about the Dread Wolf’s world-ending plan?
Allso YES!! Let’s talk about the Deep Roads. Two months sounds absolutely hellish. Novhen has his silver eyes and heightened senses, and constantly having something creep around at the edge of your perception for two months must be the worst. I’m also imagining they might have provision problems. Branka was last seen in Ortan Thaig, but they go much farther than that. This makes it difficult to plan how many provisions to bring. Naturally, if anything starts to run short, the Grey Wardens in the group would be the first to cut back on it for themselves, bc they can survive on less the deeper they are in the Deep Roads (yey taint. And yey memories of hunger seasons for Tabrises and Broscas). To what point would Novhen overextend himself?
Astala meanwhile would be taking point in all of the fights, with Khêd if he’s with the party. They might end up pretty banged up, because the Warden healing factor and the need to get through these blighted tunnels will have them taking point again and again and again. It won’t stop until they’re out. Another thing that would weight heavily on Astala is that this is a sort of preview to the end all Wardens meet: abandoned somewhere in the Deep Roads until darkspawn overwhelm them. And in only twenty years’ time, at most! She’s going to be contemplating her unfairly cut lifespan and the gruesome end that awaits her after they get out of the Deep Roads. I mean, in twenty years, Cyrion might still be alive! Does this worry Novhen too?
All of the Wardens will need two weeks minimum of resting time with nothing more exciting to do than decide what’s for dinner that day. And Astala for sure later has nightmares about the broodmother. Most notably, one with Shianni becoming a broodmother. Some nights she really wants to take her own brain out of her skull
Because of this, I approve of 🌿😎stoned 🌿😎  Shianni XD XD XD XD XD Anything’s better than being a broodmother.
I am now picturing Astala and Novhen getting utterly lost in the Brecilian forest and Ilanlas having to go fish them out XD XD XD XD Later they return the favor when they’re in Denerim. “If you don’t mention us getting los in the forest again, we won’t mention this either.” Ilanlas will definitely relax among Zathrian’s clan, I think. And, well, it seems like Novhen annd Ilanlas will stay... coworkers. Mutually significant bothers. People who work together and who you won't let die, but you're not friends per se. That’s important to have as well ^^
Unless Tamlen’s death changes something drastically. I could see him becoming veeeeeeery quiet after that, but that is uh not necessarily good
Hmmmmmmm Novhen reaching the gates of Amaranthine only to be informed by a bloody darkspawn that there’s an attack on the Vigil planned, where Astala is currently stuck in, is juicy 👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀 He definitely does right by trusting his judgement, as well as the people he left behind and the renovations they made to the fortress (and lo and behold, it holds!!) Astala’s definitely leading the defence of the Keep, from the back lines. Armor on and everything. And, the first time she gathers everybody while the darkspawn are marching in, she’ll remind them all that she killed the archdemon and survived to inspire some confidence. She’s not gonna be so confident herself, however... But as commander of the troops, you gotta keep that locked away
I think Novhen’s gonna return when the darkspawn have already been repelled ToT They’d retreat when the Mother dies, I think (bc she’s taking the position of the archdemon in this scenario?). So she’s left again to wait and see if Novhen’s still alive. At least he didn’t die at Amaranthine. But at this point she better accept that this is gonna be a constant in her life I think XD XD XD
Also, Novhen does kill the Architect, right?
I do think Ilanlas is at Adamant, at the very least, and he might take control of the Orlesian Wardens for a bit until they have a successor to Clarel (hey Nathaniel, weren’t you trained by a chevalier? Clearly we can’t trust the Orlesians not to be manipulated by a Venatori, how’d you feel about a promotion?). So there’s a fair chance he’d show up at Skyhold for the judgement of the Wardens (and drive Solas and Josephine up the wall). He wouldn’t stay long, but I think he’d have enough time to bitch to Novhen about the paperwork. Then he’d confess to hiring a secretary. What, they were infected with the Taint and put through the Joining, but they neither could nor wanted to swing a sword. It was a fair trade.
Also, Cullen getting hit with an “So you think all elves look the same” XD XD XD XD Heck yes!!!
Astala can take over visiting the Chantry at Lothering, no problem. Splitting forces will make them less noticeable and get them the money they need to move on faster. Also, somebody has to take care of that elven family the bandits stole from. Astala will tell him about the thirty silver later and they can scream together internally and externally. Then Pavle will chime in with Circle Mage, Never Learned How To Use Coin, And Before That Nobility, Always Had Coin: come on, thristy silvers can’t be THAT much. Ilanlas might tell them to just let him make four snares, he can make those while they are making dinner, and give them to the Revered Mother since he once sold a snare for eight silverpieces. And then Novhen and Astala can just look at each other and decide that none fo these two will administer their funds.
And ouch on Novhen at the arl’s estate >.<’ Boy am I glad he makes it out more or less okay, if concussed. Between Adaia, Nola, Nelaros and now Novhen, that building is bad for elves, I’m telling you. Good that Novhen at least makes it out alive
Also, yes, Edmund might have to bow out of this one. Also because I don’t know him too well yet. Pavle can be the Token Moneyed Human 😌😌😌
ALSO, RADKA!!! :D
Khêd is adopting her into the family. She’s ginger, it fits, don’t worry about it (nevermind that his hair is a few shades darker and his skin is DEFINITELY darker. Rica can be the bridge that goes from the Radka end of the color spectrum to the Khêd end of the color spectrum)
Also, Khêd would be kinda confused? “I’m not the boss here. Those two are *points at the Tabris siblings, who are composing the perfect shopping list to get the most out of their money in terms of food, necessities, plums and pickled beets* Sorta..:”
Also also, Khêd during his origin would’ve killed that guy in a heartbeat, if possible before Radka swooped in to help, so he doesn’t owe her anything (“Nothing personal, but you really shouldn’t brag to someone about getting them killed.”). I’m hoping that as the story progresses, Khêd gets to a point in life where he feels safe enough to not be trigger happy and to accept help as a favor, not as an exchange.
How old is Radka in comparison to Ilanlas? I’m getting the vivid image of Radka being sibling-like annoying person number 2 for Ilanlas XD XD XD XD The dynamic could be amazing!! He would teach her about bugs and plants, though, so she doesn’t walk into an anthill at any point. But!!! He’s going to be SO happy that there’s finally more people who’re shorter than him XD XD XD XD
Also Radka and Astala in battle 👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀 I am rotating that image around in my brain so fast!!! Both going stabby stab. Radka does dual-wield, right? They’re gonna cause mayhem on the battlefield I love it!!!!!!!!!
Twins AU (Round 2)
Since our original post exchange got a tad bit long, @bumblerhizal I’m starting a new one here ^^ First, a few things on the doodles: I’m still cackling XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD Especially about Amell (Pavle) going all “woe is me! 😩😩😩” over the dirt on his favorite robe while these two Alienage kids with probably multiple patches and mends on their clothes just look at each other like “can you believe this guy” XD XD XD XD XD XD XD It’s sooooooooo good and I am now imagining Pavle coming face to face with Sigrun’s particular brand of cheerful dead inside XD XD XD The official Grey Warden merch is amazing and our guys are great models. I really want that on a shirt now (and I could, now that I think of it. Ooooooh it’s tempting). I love Valendrian’s grey hair counter. The expression is on point XD XD XD The Plum of Peace should be a Feastday gift. And it’s very good to see reference for Radka, Pavle and Mr Andras (Who looks so kind!!!!!) Mousevhen is absolutely adorable. I want to give him all the pickled beets in the world

Some Musings on Thedosian Calendars
So in one of the Dragon Age server I’m in, the question of the Thedosian calendar came up. So I did some digging and analysis, and found some really cool correlations. Please note that these are my opinions, based on the Dragon Age Wiki and canon sources. There are many interpretations, not just mine <3
Southern Thedosian Climate Thoughts
Thedas is, from what we understand, in the southern hemisphere of their world, for the sheer fact of south = colder, north = warmer. However, if we look at the Common names of the months, there can be 2 different interpretations
-1. Either Southern Thedas has climate like an IRL northern hemisphere, where Wintersmarch = January = winter weather/snow, and thus follows seasons that way. It's easy to consider it that way, because the 8th month in Thedas and Earth, match: they're both August (according to the wiki, this is carried over from when Andraste was named Augusta in earlier drafts of the game)
-2. OR the Thedosian calendar year starts in, say, what we would consider summer in the IRL northern hemisphere/winter in the IRL southern hemisphere (such as IRL March) and then follows a southern hemisphere pattern of weather. Considering the Tevinters first set up the calendar, and the Roman calendar year starts in March, that can also be a consideration.
either of these methods can work. I personally use the first method in my longfic, The Songstress and the Swordsman, but, as stated above, there are many proverbial roads to Rome, and different interpretations.
As for the Southern Thedosian climate: from what we see in the games, there’s so many different climates present in DAI. So you can interpret it a number of ways, including:
-visiting different regions during different time of the year. We know that DAI takes place over a period of time, so that’s not a stretch. ex: ‘I’m visiting the Hinterlands in the summer, and the Emprise in winter’
-The Frostbacks could act similarly to the Rocky Mountains  in the Pacific NW of the US, where one side is lush and green, and the other is dry prairie/grassland
-some areas could be affected by magic, which would also affect things in its own way
But, we can mostly agree that it’s relatively temperate in Ferelden and the Free Marches. There's some snow in parts of it.
What of Tevinter/the North, though? That's where things get interesting.
Tevinter Calendar and Climate
Here is the calendar, directly from the Wiki
Tumblr media
so let's break this down. Tevene shares roots in Latin, so I used Latin to translate this...
 1: Spring-month/Wintermarch; celebrate First Day
2: 'it rains' (from that Latin verb 'to rain')/Guardian; celebrate Wintersend
3: 'hazy/ cloudy'/Drakonis
4: Eluvium: sediment/rock debris formed from running water or rain/Cloudreach
5: I strive/work (or, alternatively a tweak of 'melior' which is 'better')/Bloomingtide; celebrate Summersday
6: Hot/boiling (from 'fervens')/ Justinian
7: Sun (easy: sol for sun)/Solace
8: Pertaining to matrons/married women (further push it to Mothers)/ August; celebrate All Souls Day
9: Small (can be interpreted as ‘little ones’ or children)/Kingsway
10: Grain/Harvestmere
11: Shadowy/cloudy/Firstfall; celebrate Satinalia
12: Hollow or empty/ Haring
Notice that we have a clear period of 3 rainy months, 2 intense summer, a harvest, and then a cloudy, empty period of not much going on. This, to me, follows the typical climate found in India.
If we ascribe to the first theory of 'Wintersmarch = January = Winter' I would consider SE India, where there are monsoons during the IRL winter months (speaking from a northern hemisphere perspective, at least)
If we use Theory 2 'Wintermarch = IRL March' then this aligns with the SW monsoon pattern during the IRL summer (again, northern hemisphere perspective <3 ).
I interpret it as this:
Guardian-Cloudreach: monsoon season
Bloomingtide: super short respite, planting season
Justinian-August: S U M M E R
Kingsway-Harvestmere: autumn
Firstfall-Haring: winter
Wintermarch: super short spring
Could it be that it these names are simply cool names slapped onto the IRL Earth calendar? Possibly. However, the correlations are a bit too coincidental for me to rule that out completely.
Tevinter Calendar, The Weather, and Holidays
I found some correlations between the Old Tevinter names of the holidays, and the translated month names in which they occur
Wintersend/Urthalis: dedicated to Urthemiel, the god of beauty. How does holding tourneys match up with 'beauty?' well, two ways: flex your political muscles and put on some epic pageants/events that are beautiful. OR celebrate this right before the monsoons start, when the weather is still 'beautiful.' Parts of Tevinter will become muddy and muggy, soon, definitely not pretty
Summersday/Andoralis: dedicated to Andoral, the god of unity. We celebrate this in Bloomingtide/Melior, or the 'I work' month. Andoral is the god of unity, so why honor him during this month? To unify together and plant before the summer comes
All Souls Day/Funalis: dedicated to Dumat, the god of silence. this is a very interesting holiday, because after Dumat rose in the first Blight, Thedosians rededicated the holiday to remembering those who have passed. In the South, it represents Andraste’s death, coming from August (Augusta was, remember, an old name for Andraste before the devs switched it over). Bonfires are common, to represent Her pyre. In the Old Tevene, Matronalis is ‘pertaining to matrons/married women.’ Andraste is the Bride of the Maker, a married woman, and mother.
It’s interesting to note that in some Northern countries, people dress as spirits and parade down main thoroughfares at midnight. Is it a carry-over from Dumat’s celebration in the ‘dead silence of night?’ Perhaps!
Satinalia/Feastday: originally attributed to the god of chaos. Now. This is like... two letters off or something from the Ancient Roman Saturnalia, and bears some really close resemblances (not to the month name, this time). Wild celebrations, masquerades, gift giving: in some areas, like Antiva, it lasts a whole week! So a whole week of chaos! Epicness! It’s my favorite holiday, and I never attended it before <3
It’s a good thing to note that the holiday got its name from Satina, the second moon. It could be that, during this time of year, Satina is really visible/prominent in the sky, hence why the holiday is named for it.

me: i love the knight enchanter specialization!!!! also me: the knight enchanter specialization is effectively a form of cultural appropriation bc it’s created from a kind of elvhen magic that’s otherwise been all but wiped out by humans so they’re looking down their noses at elvhen magical practices while also picking them apart for whatever they decide is useful

Do you research before writing or while you write? Is it fun or boring for you?
Short answer: yes.
Long answer: Okay, this will take some background.
I've been writing fanfiction for almost six years now. My early stuff, set in Fallout 4, Borderlands 2 and Mass Effect, I never needed to research, unless I was looking for something incredibly specific that I couldn't remember off the top of my head. I'd played all of those enough to quote whole sections and knew story arcs for characters like I knew my own name.
I started writing Twist before I'd ever played DA:I.
See, I only had a vague idea of what the games were, knew a couple names, had some spoilers for the ending, that sort of thing. It wasn't until I had the urge to try my hand at writing for that universe (which actually was more DA2 than Inquisition, and was a Hawke/Varric fic) that I really sat down and dug into the story and action. So I watched some playthrough videos. And then I watched some romance and banter compilations. And then I started seeking out meta posts.
The reason I did all that was because some Dread Demigod came along and informed me that he actually had nuance and I fell down a rabbithole from which I've yet to emerge. I just wanted to write a happy ending Solavellan, dammit! How did I get here?!
So yeah, there was a lot of research that went into writing my DA fics. And there still is because...yes, I'm aware of how this is gonna sound...I still haven't finished playing the game. Haven't even started DAO and DA2. I've watched other people play the DLC's more than I've played them, with the notable exception of JoH. I'm still constantly looking things up, whether it's details for quests, specific dialogue, hell, even Thedosian native plants.
And I love every minute of it. I'm very detail oriented; research of this nature is fascinating to me. Distracting, yes. Often frustrating because the canon is always contradicting itself, yes. Boring, no.
(I promise, someday I'll finish Carly 1.0's save file. I'm so close.)
From this list. Thanks for the ask! 💕

Planning out the new worldstate here…
My best-loved worldstate is Surana->mage!Hawke->mage!Lavellan.
I prefer mages for both gameplay and story reasons. For race, I love the elves, both city and dalish. In terms of romance, I enjoy mages with non-mages, and romance crossing race lines. (Honorary shout-out to the raw, started-from-the-bottom storylines of Brosca and Tabris. I love them so much!)
But… I’m gonna keep this new play-through boring. All human ladies.
Since this is my lore refresh play-through, I’m sticking with humans, as the narrative seems to favor them at times. Particularly in the case of Cousland and how they fit in with the nobility of Ferelden and the sub-plot with Arl Howe. So, yeah. Gonna give up playing a mage warden. Also, with a Trevelyan, I won’t feel as compelled to drink from the well of sorrows as I was with Lavellan. (How dare Morrigan say she was the better option when a Dalish elf is literally standing right there) Even with these deviations, I’m sure I’ll enjoy the play-throughs. They’re all just gratuitous self-inserts and I’m still gonna make all of my favorite choices. I’m a creature of habit.
So we have:
Amalthea “Theo” Cousland (rogue)
Ayesleigh Hawke (mage)
Augusta Trevelyan (mage)
Artemisia *surname TBD* in DA4
Human she/theys with “A” names. I’ll call it my Andrastian worldstate lol. …Although all of them were raised in the Chantry faith, they’re all different levels of non-belief now. I can’t bring myself to play a Chantry lover. Yikes.
Amalthea is one of the names used by Divines and I’m headcanoning that it’s an old Cousland family name, including a use by Teyrna Elethea Cousland for one of her daughters. Also headcanoning that it was Divine Amalthea I who wrote a favorite hymn of Cousland’s mother, Eleanor. However, she(/they) prefers to go by just Theo.
Ayesleigh is, of course, the name of a city. One that was the final battleground of the Fourth Blight. In my headcanon, Leandra chose this name for her first child after Malcolm’s work with the Wardens. He never revealed to his wife what the Wardens had forced him to do, but she was aware that they were instrumental in her release from her father’s house. Also, that makes the Hawke siblings start with A, B, and C in order. Leandra strikes me as the kind of mom to do that.
Augusta, in meta was originally going to be the name for Andraste, which is why one of the months in the Thedosian year is August. I’m headcanoning that Augusta was the name of an early and vocal proponent of the Andrastian faith who lived in the hundred-some years after Andraste’s death and before Emperor Drakon established the Orlesian chantry. The Trevelyan family are very pious and many of their traditional family names I’m sure are taken from ancient Chantry faithful. My Augusta is not super fond of her name, especially since her brother calls her Gussie to get a rise out of her. They often just go by August and is actually a bit relieved when folks start calling them The Herald/Inquisitor.
Artemisia Gentileschi is a favored artist of mine and the name sounds like it could be possibly from Tevinter or Antiva. For now, it’s a placeholder. We’ll see if it changes as more info come out about the DA4 protag.
…I really hope the DA4 human option isn’t a noble again.

As a born and raised Brazilian, I must say that I disagree quite strongly with this.
As has been said by OP, there is no such thing as 1:1 equivalence of our real world and Thedas, and it is safe to say Bioware has taken elements from several different cultures to create their own, but when it comes to whatever might have been their major inspiration for Antiva, I strongly believe the 'new world' (and therefore Latin America) was not it.
Let's break it down.
The first thing that I would like to point out is that Thedas is a pseudo Medieval setting, but Latin America did not experience the V-XV centuries as Europe did. If they had based themselves on that period of our history, then we'd expect diffused tribes, Mayan/Aztec/Inca architecture, polytheistic/pantheistic religions and their rituals, indigenous clothing, foods and cultures. But that's not what we see.
And we don't see post-colonized Latin American culture either. Antiva is a country that has a long history of wealthy families, maritime domination, and trade, and no colonization whatsoever. Latin American countries were colonized, and as awful as all of those colonizations have been (decimation of peoples, burying of cultures, complete exploration of native resources to enrich the colonizers, slavery of natives, etc), you can't sweep them under the rug and pretend our modern culture exists without that baggage. It doesn't. And Antiva doesn't have it -- But Rivain sort of does.
That's ultimately my biggest point. If they had inspired themselves on us to create Antiva, you'd see elements that are unique to us (as pointed out above), either positive or negative, pre or post colonization. But looking at a clearly European-coded setting and pushing it to somehow pretend it was inspired on Latin America for the sake of representation… does not make me feel represented. It doesn't have my culture. I think Rivain is much more Latin American.
Meanwhile, let's look at what Antiva does have.
It was originally named Calabria, which is the name of a region in Italy.
It has a history of powerful city states with strong maritime presence and trade, such as the republic of Venice.
It has a city called Treviso (Italian comune which belonged to Venice), and another called Rialto (an area/bridge of Venice), and the Tellari swamps (Tellaro being an actual paesino in Northern Italy as well)
It has a tradition of week-long Satinalia, which is like Medieval Carnival (also called Saturnalia in ancient times). While you could argue that in modern times the Carnival of Rio has more fame than most in Europe, it was brought here by Christian colonizers, and we didn't have quite the same tradition of the king playing the fool. From wikipedia:
Carnival: Some of the best-known traditions, including carnal parades and masquerade balls, were first recorded in medieval Italy. The Carnival of Venice was, for a long time, the most famous carnival. From Italy, Carnival traditions spread to Spain, Portugal, and France, and from France to New France in North America. From Spain and Portugal, it spread with colonization to the Caribbean and Latin America.
OP mentions the Andes, but I'd like to point out the Alps and the Apennine.
While OP is right that Brazil is the biggest producer -- and exporter -- of coffee, it was not native to us. In fact it was brought here by Europeans and we did not become such prominent producers of it until export demands increased (mostly European buyers). Furthermore we have a very complex history with coffee (lots of forests destroyed to plant it, slave workforce, etc) and it is at the center of our attempts at creating an independent economy in the early 19th century. Meanwhile, it doesn't seem to me like coffee has that baggage in Antiva. Rather it sounds more like: (from wikipedia )
Coffee: From the Middle East, coffee spread to Italy. The thriving trade between Venice and North Africa, Egypt, and the Middle East (back then Ottoman Empire), brought many goods, including coffee, to the Venetian port. From Venice, it was introduced to the rest of Europe. Coffee became more widely accepted after it was deemed a Christian beverage by Pope Clement VIII in 1600, despite appeals to ban the "Muslim drink." The first European coffee house opened in Rome in 1645.
When it comes to music, OP mentions the flute -- an instrument from several different cultures, not just Latin American in the least. Greece, Germany, China, India… There are flutes unique to South America, true, but there are flutes literally everywhere and Bioware never really shows us what kind of flute the lillo is.
On the matter of "things that were common basically all over the globe," I need not say there was gold -- and gold ostentation -- in Europe in Medieval times. Gold as wealth is pretty much present in tons of cultures. OP also mentions turquoise. Yes, it is true the Aztec had it, but so did the Iranian, Egyptians and other Arab peoples. It was taken to Europe through the Silk Roads before they reached the Americas.
Which brings me to… Silk, and weaving. Silk is Chinese/Middle Eastern in origin but also a famous Antivan product. I don't know if maybe there is a parallel between European-Asian trade and Antivan-Par Vollen trade there. What I do know is that Antiva, as well as Orlais, is well known for its fashion in general, which evokes modern France (Paris) and Italy (Milan) in my mind. And it is relevant to point out weaving existed in medieval Europe as much as in South America. From Wikipedia:
Weaving: The predominant fibre was wool, followed by linen and nettlecloth for the lower classes. Cotton was introduced to Sicily and Spain in the 9th century. When Sicily was captured by the Normans, they took the technology to Northern Italy and then the rest of Europe. Silk fabric production was reintroduced towards the end of this period and the more sophisticated silk weaving techniques were applied to the other staples.
OP mentions the Felicissima Armada, the Antivan (and Rivaini) band of pirates. Yes, it is true that the Caribbean was the protagonist of the Golden Age of piracy, but the name 'felicissima armada' is literally the name of the Spanish navy in 1588. And piracy existed before its Golden Age. In fact, Venice has a history of struggles with pirates… And just remember that even though the Felicissima Armada did fight with Antiva against invasion, when in peace, the pirates target Antivan merchants too (who choose to pay them a tax instead of fighting), so they're not a protection army.
In fact, the Thedosian Felicissima Armada has its headquarters in Llomerryn, which is a Rivaini 'pirate paradise' kind of like Nassau (and it is worth mentioning most Pirates were European anyway). Either way, that 'tarde hub' is Rivaini and not Antivan.
Some other things Rivain has in common with pre-colonization Latin America are its tribal customs and its religions. They were colonized by the Qunari and forced into the Qun and then the Chantry took over and violently pushed Andrastianism into their culture. The Chantry actually carries on a genocide of non-Andrastian in Rivain, forcing them to at least incorporate or pretend to accept Andrastianism.
In Rivain, body paint and body modifications are part of the culture (such as in pre colonized South American, African and Australian tribes), the women have a strong role (as with many of those peoples too), and the gods are nature itself (I know for a fact this was such for indigenous Brazilian groups).
Bc of the chantry take over, Rivain has a Circle and mages are taken to it, but even inside the Circles the Seers (who seem to be like Paje or other tribal chiefs in South American communities) have authority bc this is part of their cultural roots. Just like here in Brazil Christianim exist simultaneously with African-Indigenous Brazilian religions.
Meanwhile Antiva is heavily Andrastian just as Italy and Spain were (and still are) heavily Christian.
Not to mention the Crows, who pretty much influence all political decisions in Antiva. They're several different cells with initiation rituals and pyramidal hierarchy. Sounds like the Italian mafia, huh? La Cosa Nostra, La Camorra and La 'Ndrangheta, for instance? The latter of which had its origins in Calabria, by the way. Of course you could argue the Colombian cartels are also very prominent in South America, but they're very modern and entirely drug traffic related, while the Italian mafia is older and more related to politics. I invite you to read anything on the Sicilian mafia initiation rituals and try not to see the Crows:
Sicilian Mafia: A prospective mafioso is carefully tested for obedience, discretion, courage, ruthlessness, and skill at espionage.[18][132] He is almost always required to commit murder as his ultimate trial,[18] even if he doesn't plan to be a career assassin. The act of murder is to prove his sincerity (i.e., he is not an undercover policeman) and to bind him into silence (i.e., he cannot break omertà without facing murder charges himself).
There's also the matter of the language. While David Gaider's word is not law, when we are discussing where the writers took their inspiration from, his word is very relevant. And he has written a short story in which Zev calls the warden "amore," which is Italian. All of the other people writing Antiva for the comics, instead, use Spanish -- which was brought to South America by the Spanish during colonization, and which brings me back to "Antiva doesn't have a history of colonization" point, so it does not represent post-colonization Latin America.
Lastly, Antiva simply doesn't feel even remotely Latin American to me, a Latin American. I have lived all my life in Brazil and visited several of its states and cities. I've never seen these medieval looking, steep alleys, or castles on top of hills, with colorful little houses in all of the surroundings of that hill, or ports with a bunch of canals and all. When you do find such Architecture (or similar, like Ouro Preto) it is, of course, because of the European colonization.
On the other hand, I've been in Italy (spending a month here) for less than two weeks and I've been to a handful of cities which do look exactly like that! Just check out these pictures (some I took this week, some from google) side by side with the pictures OP took from The Silent Grove:

Now look at Rivain:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Picture on the right is of a city in the state of Pará, Brazil. Stilt houses are not exclusively or even originally ours, and they're definitely not common in most of Brazil, so plz don't assume as much. But we actually do have that kind of architecture. As opposed to, you know... medieval castles on hilltops
When it comes to their phenotype, yes, Antivans are dark skinned. The end. There should be no discussion regarding that. Zev and Josie are dark skinned and therefore, in terms of skin/genes, poc.
Their ethnicity -- culture, architecture, and history, however, are not Latin American. And one thing North Americans in this fandom need to learn is that skin color does not equate history/culture, race does not equate to ethnicity. Stop acting like Zev being dark skinned makes him Colombian or Brazilian coded, or that Josie being dark skinned makes her Aztec-inspired (or that they can't be European-coded bc they are poc, as if there hadn't been any poc in medieval Italy/Spain. Yes, there were).
Dorian looks South Asian/Indian, but Tevinter is definitely not India-coded either. And as for Orlais being Italy/Spain…I just… I kindly ask my French followers to please take it away.
OP might be tired of all Medieval Fantasy settings being inspired in Europe, and so am I. But taking a very European-coded fictional place that does not have a noticeable Latin American historical or cultural baggage (either pre or post colonization) and calling it Latin American just because it has swamps, rain, weaving and flutes… does not make it Latin American coded. It just makes me, a Latin American, pissed.
If any Thedosian country is based on us, then it's Rivain.
Of course, fans can hc whatever they want to increase representation. I myself made Fenris Brazilian in my modern AU. You may even hc Zev and Josie as Latine too, but Bioware most certainly did not.
Do you know of any Latine characters in dragon age? I figured antivan characters but they're supposedly just spanish.
Antiva has more in common with Latin America than Spain and Italy (the other one often said.) So the TL;DR version is yeah I think most Antivan characters like Zevran and Josephine could be considered Latine. (And Josephine was clarified to be a WOC, though we weren’t given any details beyond that because BioWare.)
Also you should totally check out @latinxdragonage!
First, just a reminder that there is no 1:1 ratio of Thedosian countries and IRL equivalencies, but rather general regions of the world. So please don’t misinterpret this as me lumping all of Latin America together, but rather I believe that is what BioWare did in terms of pulling inspiration from a wide range of places and cultures. Antiva is a large place and there’s lots of room for differences across it!
Zevran says that in Antiva it rains often. Spain has a dry climate compared to nations like Colombia (which has been ranked as the rainiest country in the world) and neighbouring countries:
Tumblr media
That it rains so much in Antiva makes sense why they have a region called “the Drylands,” if it’s dry unlike most of their country, instead of the other way around like Spain.
Antiva is also hope to the Tellari swamps, which is a giant wetland [some images are included in this post]. Four of the worlds most major wetlands are in South America, including The Pantonal, which is also one of the largest. Looking at the actual comics though, while it’s called a swamp it appears more like a rain-forest to my eye at least. In which case that still definitely wouldn’t bring Spain or Italy to mind, would it?
Still talking about geography, Antiva shares The Hundred Pillars with Tevinter, which is a long stretched mountain range like the Andes.
Last Flight describes Antiva City being decorated with turquoise tiles, just like the Aztec people used it for, among other things as it was favoured for both ornamentation and ceremonial use. There is no turquoise in Spain.
Also in Antiva is gold; their symbol is a golden drake. And yeah the Spaniards sure loved their fucking gold, but who did they steal it all from again?
Antiva is where coffee is produced in Thedas. The world’s biggest coffee producer is Brazil (by a lot), with Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia and Mexico also being on the top ten list. Some other foods that are known to come from Antiva are peppers, corn and passion fruit, all foods native to Latin America, and only brought back to Spain by colonizers.
Antiva is specifically named when discussing fine weaving skills, with rugs apparently identifiable as Antivan by look. Weaving is an iconic textile tradition from many Indigenous peoples in South America.
Zevran mentions something called a “lillo flute” being a common instrument used by Antivan minstrels. This may be a fictional type of flute, and not that they have the copyright on all flute music, but flutes are among the most used instruments in Andean music.
Antiva has a huge history of piracy and as a trade hub similar to the Caribbean, including the existence of pirate seaports, which were a large contributor to the establishment of Antiva as a nation.
Finally, a few things entering headcanon territory but I’ll include anyway:
I like to think the Drylands could be equivalent to the drylands in Mexico, Argentina and Chile.
That Antivans have notable weaving textiles would also suggest that they have the animals it takes to produce the fibres, like llamas and alpacas? Which would thrive in the Drylands and mountains. And the Dalish of Antiva probably use halla wool.
It’s not that there aren’t any things that Antiva has in common with Spain and Italy, like previously being a city-state (something Gaider specifically pointed out when asked if Antiva City was Italy) and known for wine exports. But I think Orlais has more in common with those countries, when we’re talking about the quantity of similarities……And frankly, I am really tired of the fantasy genre only equating to Europe. Dragon Age is one of the only franchises not to do that.

More Fun Thedosian Food and Drinks Facts
So, a few more fun facts to tide you all over while I finish my food posts. (Also some snide commentary of my food frustrations at the end.)
Part 1
The Inquisition soldiers stationed in the Western Approach, Griffon Wing Keep, eat quillback and occasionally varghest. Which, considering they’re predators and you want to cook that all the way through means a lot of stews, soups, roasted, and other means.
Orlesians drink almond tea.
They also have punch, which can be both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.
When needed Thedosians will sweeten yellow wine with honey and spices.
Thedosians, Nevarran and other nations alike, eat dragons. Which isn’t entirely surprising but I mean they salt it, dry the blood to use as seasonings, all of it. Which, honestly, I appreciate them using the entirety of the animal.
Thedas has caviar, which implies sturgeon - unless Thedas has it’s own caviar making fish, but until noted otherwise you can assume sturgeon as most Thedosian food follows real world sources.
Thedas has both the dessert and savory forms of pudding. Which threw me for a minute when I came across Varric’s dialogue suggesting they put gravy on pudding.
Qunari have their own type of ale.
Avvar have their own type of mead and it is supposedly better than lowlander mead. Though, Amund might be a bit biased.
Both Avvar and Fereldans eat harts.
With the existence of Cacio e pepe, there is the implication that spaghetti and pevorino romano cheese exists in Antiva/Thedas. In Tevinter Nights it is implied that the Imperium makes it wrong meaning they uses butter, oil, or another ingredient aside from the cheese, pepper, and spaghetti.
Thedas has ale, beer, lager, and drafts, but since those things historically haven’t always been made from hops, it’s hard to say if hops exist. Hops in Thedas are theoretical, like waffles and lettuce.
Waffles aren’t mentioned as a food. Hawke’s nicknames are actions so... likely not a food. But open to headcanon, cause I ain’t here to rain on your parade.
There is not a single mention of salad or lettuce in Thedas but there are objects labeled “salad bowls” and I have intense feelings about this. Especially since the foods referenced range up to the 1900s. Let there be lettuce Bioware. Please.
The Bioware devs seem to like just saying “root vegetables”, “cakes”, “teas”, “fruits“, ect. instead of specifying which leaves a large gap and hurts my heart. Cause honestly I would love to know more veggies they used or even to see more foods unique to Thedas.
