I had my doubts about drawing Kern in my @criticalrole series. I ended doing it because I loved the two bouts he had against Grog, those were epic (also the aftermath of both of them, they're hilarious).

Had plans to go out today, but the weather decided it was ok to drop into the negatives. New agenda for the day: blanket, puppy cuddles, coffee, inspiration, and getting lost in a made-up AU fantasy world. Let's write some angst!

Goodies and Baddies
"Goodies and Baddies", a review of 'The Crucible' screened by the National Theatre Live in SA this week.
I’LL not have such looks, says Abigail (Erin Doherty), in a scene from Lindsey Turner’s The Crucible produced by the National Theatre Live. Photograph by Johan Persson. SHE SAID, HE said and the vulnerable young woman servant without a voice hasn’t a chance in a context where she can be labelled one thing and hung for it. Push anyone far and ruthlessly enough with the threat of their worst fears…

Book Review — “The Witches: Suspicion, Betrayal, and Hysteria in 1692 Salem” by Stacy Schiff (2016, @hachetteus)
Categories: Nonfiction, US History, 17th Century, Puritanism, Witches and Witch-hunts
Ratings: 3.25 on GR (20k ratings), my rating 3 stars ✨

My Summary + Thoughts ⤵️
Presented by a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, this book is a lengthy exposition of what scholars and historians know and theorize about the infamous Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s.
In the colonial Massachusetts lands, the witch trials resulted from a town’s mass hysteria involving people claiming possession by devil or knowledge of those working with demonic forces. Puritan sensibilities made this accusation detrimental to one’s reputation… and eventually, their lives and freedom.
Tumblr media
Topics this book substantially covers:
• Salem: what was the town like?
• Church + Religion: What was its importance in Salem and how did town politics get involved in the church?
• Members of Community: Relevant people such as prominent families, those afflicted with bewitching, those accused of witchcraft, the authorities + ministers, skeptics.
• The Bewitching: How the first young girls acted and theories held by community, Tituba’s involvement, getting info about the accused from known people to strangers from afar
• Accused: interrogators/investigators, jailing and its conditions, trial and jurors + accusations & defenses
• Symbols: Things the puritans described as signs of guilt or trouble, including their elaborate stories of the accused’s antics and seeing black cats, red books, brooms, different types of animals, etc.
• Hysteria & Sociology: the social contagion + mass hysteria of the witch-hunt and high profile cases. Some theories on why this happened.
And much more. The book fills in gaps and bridges material with details contextualizing the trials. Anything from pointing out influences of feuding families to describing PTSD from Indian attacks, the book provides some padding to the sources. At some points, it’s a bit of a slog because it takes a lot of winding away from the point it’s making, but in all, a decent collection of info presented in a narrative style.

halloween must reads
5 spooky classic books to read for Halloween:
If you aren’t into watching horror movies all night on Halloween, here are some alternatives that are just a bit less scary, but definitely worth your time. Here are my ratings and plot summaries for 5 classic Halloween books.
1. Something Wicked This Way Comes - by Ray Bradbury, published in 1962
4.5/5 In this book, two young boys find themselves in trouble when an eerie circus comes to town. Jim and Will have to overcome temptations and avoid making a grave mistake -- joining the circus and selling their souls. This book shows the fine line between good and evil within human nature, and the boys are forced to navigate the fine line between childish curiosity and a naive overeagerness to grow up. Under a guise of harmless fun, Mr Dark and Mr Cooger managed to take advantage of  circus goers' most basic and vile temptations, and gain their souls as a result. This book is very short and is an easier read. The symbolism and hidden meanings make this book fascinating to analyze and enjoy.
2. The Crucible - By Arthur Miller, published in 1952
4.5/5 This story follows a young, manipulative girl, who, at first accused of being a witch, discovers she now has the power to imprison, and sentence to death anyone who she implicates in being involved in witchcraft.
The townspeople become hysterical. At a single accusation from Abigail, they can lose their lives and good name. Out of fear, townspeople begin accusing neighbors of witchcraft, in order to prove their own innocence. The town’s leadership doesn’t help the situation, but encourages Abigail, by giving her complete power over her fellow townspeople. Amidst this corrupt, chaotic political climate, some sympathetic characters emerge. John Proctor and his wife are the only characters unphased by the lies. John Proctor attempts to appease the townspeople and reason with them, but soon he too is implicated. At the climax of the novel John and his wife must decide between life and truth.
This book was originally written, perhaps surprisingly, in the 1950’s during a time when a mere accusation of being a communist could completely ruin someone’s reputation. In our divisive political climate, we cry “witch” with different language. One word can cause suspicion and “cancel” someone. We are often quick to make assumptions, quick to call someone out. As our world becomes more and more divided, we cease to see people we disagree with as sane human beings. That’s pretty scary if you ask me.
3. Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde in 1890
4/5 Dorian is an extremely beautiful, yet impressionable young man. He is close to Basil Hallward, who enjoys painting Dorian and capturing his beauty with his art. When Dorian encounters Basil's radical friend Lord Henry, his views of morality and beauty are turned upside down. In an attempt to preserve his beauty, he sells his soul so that his painting will age and change while he remains the same. This gets creepy. It’s safe to say that Dorian becomes a monster after he sells his soul for his vanity.
4. Dracula - Bram Stoker, published in 1897
4.5/5 I read this book a while ago, but I had to add it to the list because of it’s clear scary subject. This is hands down the best halloween read. It’s outright scary, while the other books are more so creepy. (It’s not scary, by modern standards but it’s probably the scariest old book I’ve read) The book follows an English lawyer, Johnathan Harker who pays an unfortunate visit to count Dracula, and finds himself in a hunt for the bloodsucking monster as he travels to England to find more victims. This book was so fun to read, and was a quick read too. I would definitely recommend this book as a last minute Halloween read.
5. Frankenstein - by Mary Shelly, published in 1818
5/5 This book was written by Mary Shelly when she was just 19, only a year older than me. This book is so good, but I think it’s a lot different than what our modern view of Frankenstien is. Frankenstein isn’t actually a monster, he’s the scientist who creates him from other human remains and gives him life from a spark of electricity. He enters the world extremely innocent. But after he is neglected by his creator and shunned by society, he becomes the monster everyone believes him to be. This book is so well written and is definitely a must read. I will probably revisit this book this year actually!
