so, i've got this friend - let's call her "casey". and she's a really sweet person, i love her to bits. the thing is, casey really wants to be a witch. and not just like, doing some spells for herself and her friends, kind of thing. she wants to be a professional witch. she's obsessed with this dream of hers, pouring so much time and energy into making social media posts about her spellwork and trying to mimic her favorite witchstagram influencers.
but the problem is⌠she kinda sucks??? none of her spells work and sometimes they can really backfire. she made me a housewarming charm for my new apartment, and within a day of putting it up, my neighbors were banging on my door accusing me of cursing the whole building! but instead of working on her craft, she's totally focused on building this social media persona. she honestly isn't getting the kind of traction she was hoping for - probably because, you know⌠she sucks!! is there any way i can convince her to at least take a bit more time in training before she tries to go pro?
I'm afraid there isn't much you can do here, dear reader. I understand your concerns â it's no easy thing to see a person you love embark on a path you consider foolish. But it Casey is her own person, and needs to be allowed to forge her own path.
As her friend, you need to decide how much you can be there for Casey in this endeavour. I certainly don't think you should lie to her â neither of you will be served by you pretending you think this career change is a wise decision. But you can find other things to praise â her commitment, her bravery and her enthusiasm, if nothing else.
Besides which, I'm not sure I actually see anything in her âbusiness planâ (a term I use extremely loosely here) that actually involves any magical ability. You say she's pouring her energy into social media posts and developing her Instagram profile. None of that constitutes becoming a professional witch in any actual spell-crafting capacity.
If she does pivot to trying to make money from her actual craft, she may well run into some rather obvious obstacles â namely that her spells do more harm than good. I see no reason to discourage her in this. After all, perhaps a slew of negative reviews and refund demands will spur her into developing her craft a little more (hopefully under the guidance of a more experienced practitioner, and not a fellow 'witchstagram' enthusiast).
Confronting her about her lack of skill will only upset her. Concentrate instead on being her friend and supporting her as and how you can without undermining your own integrity. It simply isn't your place to try and guide Casey on this matter. She will do as she wishes, and needs to make her own choices â and her own mistakes.

People always talk about working with fairies as this super scary thing that you should only do if you're like super serious and ready to commit and they can be really scary and mean meanwhile I unintentionally started working with fairies when I was a very young kid building fairy houses in my garden and I didn't even understand this practice like I do now and have had nothing but positive experiences with them. I still have several gifts I revived from when I was a child including a one inch light green glass marble, which was the biggest gift I've ever received. Obviously everyone's experience is different and you really shouldn't just jump into things without thinking about it, but sometimes other's experiences make me feel like mine are totally alien in comparison. Especially when I see other people leaving anything plastic/synthetic for them or even use hot glue on a project, makes me cringe because I was always told to never to do that, only plant based/natural materials. (I'm not saying this is wrong, just something that has been a part of my practice for so long and something so second nature to me that I forget not everyone follows the same rules I do.)
I think it's the same as deities, spirits, anything supernatural/otherworldly: it gets way blown out of proportion on social media these days, especially with the emergence and popularity of witchtok, witchstagram, witchblr, and some people just, love to fearmonger because for some reason it makes them feel special or something.
Obviously, you should know what you're doing and think about what you're getting into. You should be respectful and do your research. You should not treat them like toys or media characters and you should disregard Hollywood's portrayals and read up on histories and mythologies and folklores from around the world, etc.
Some of it I think it's the unfamiliar and foreign aspects of some of these beings. People tend to fear what they don't know. I grew up with the mythical creatures of my native land. They've been with me my whole life, as familiar as Santa Clause and his reindeer to the folks this side of the globe. I get that it does make it harder to understand certain things when you don't fully grasp the cultural and historical contexts. And unfortunately, the United States is a very insular country.

Preface|| I have no credentials
To further this, a lot of the hang up is tied in this overarching sense of artificial worthiness to practice, or an often comorbid fear of punishment from some universal force that a lot of newer practitioners feel.
I think thereâs a message that permeates through most magic oriented spheres that says âmagic was born from necessityâ and like, yes it sure was. But I feel a lot of people take this to mean it can only be necessity based.
And in a lot of newer circles( namely witchtok and witchstagram) Iâve seen people stressing that new witches should only cast spells once theyâve done copious amounts of research, and done x amount of hours of energy work, and read this many books.
Practicing IS research. Itâs field research. Itâs your clinical hours. You can do magic just because. Flex the magic muscle and go to the magic gym.
Lukewarm take: If you want to get good at practical sorcery, you're probably going to have to do a lot of magic you don't need to do, just for the sake of practice
I do not like or support the idea that ~all~ witches are supposed to be spiritual bodybuilders who are ~supposed~ to do daily training drills.
But some people really would like to really practice certain skills related to witchcraft (as in, habitually engage with a skill for the purpose of improvement).
I'm really into sorcery, and every time I bring up the idea that to get good at it you should practice it, I feel like someone always ends up saying, "but I don't need anything."
IMO there is a very unhelpful vibe when it comes to ""practice discourse"" where it is assumed that if you don't need something, then it isn't useful to practice it.
Case in point, cleansing!
A lot of people say that you don't really need to cleanse things, not even spiritual tools; that it's a handy skill to have if you need it, but it's not necessary.
My point isn't whether or not you really need to cleanse things.
My point is the practice that cleansing can bring!
Cleanse a hundred objects, and you have a hundred more interactions with magic under your belt.
Depending on the method of cleansing you're doing, you've enchanted a hundred dishes of salt water, a hundred sticks of incense, said a hundred charms.
You've engaged your willpower and magical mind a hundred times.
You have a hundred more experiences with how working with that energy, or that correspondence, or that charm affects you; how it leaves you feeling; how it leaves the object feeling.
Imagine how effective a charm might begin to be if you use it a hundred times. Imagine the experience you might gain using ten different cleansing methods ten times each.
You've got a lot more experience with objects before and after they've been worked over.
A person who does a hundred cleansings may not begin to develop an innate sense for the spiritual grime that can accumulate in the world around us, but I imagine they'd be a lot more likely to than someone who doesn't cleanse at all.
The thing with magic is that (IMO) you can never just practice one thing at a time. If you practice cleansing, you may also be practicing enchantment, energy work, psychism, petitioning, and so forth (again, depending on your methods).
And when the time comes to cast, idk, a prosperity spell, I would put my money on a guy who has only been cleansing because he had nothing better to do, than someone who hasn't been practicing any magic at all in the same timespan.
It goes for anything. A hundred energized little rocks to change the mood of a room. A hundred bits of string to tie up an annoyance.
Maybe you don't NEED an annoyance tied up.
But if you WANT to practice magic, then what does it matter what the magic is for?
