Goodies and Baddies
"Goodies and Baddies", a review of 'The Crucible' screened by the National Theatre Live in SA this week.
I’LL not have such looks, says Abigail (Erin Doherty), in a scene from Lindsey Turner’s The Crucible produced by the National Theatre Live. Photograph by Johan Persson. SHE SAID, HE said and the vulnerable young woman servant without a voice hasn’t a chance in a context where she can be labelled one thing and hung for it. Push anyone far and ruthlessly enough with the threat of their worst fears…

Summary:
Delissandro stood, knocking the unknown dairy islander dressed in fruitleather beneath him fully out. He saw his mother surrounded by five more, for now upright, marauders. He let out a shout, aiming to throw his spear, about to call and reveal the nature of their enemy.
But before he could, he felt a sharp pain as something extremely solid knocked into the soft part below his skull, instantly bringing him to his knees as a bony hand guided him down by the shoulder and a quick kick to the back of his knees. Then a cold press of metal against his exposed neck as the hold on his shoulder tightened, the figure behind him calling out, "drop your weapons or your thane gets it." The voice was cold, calm…
It was as if the world slowed around him, the fighting coming to a halt rapidly as his people noticed his distress.
Delissandro knew that voice...

'With his first feature film “Weekend” in 2011, Andrew Haigh promptly wrote himself into queer film history. The Brit later directed works such as the whaling miniseries “The North Water” with Colin Farrell.
He is now back with a heartbreaking love film of a special kind: “All Of Us Strangers” stars Paul Mescal, Jamie Bell and Claire Foy alongside lead actor Andrew Scott...'

Big Finish launches Doctor Who audio drama podcast
17 February 2024
Classic Doctor Who audio dramas will be brought to a new audience with Into the TARDIS, a new podcast due to be released weekly from March 2024.
Since 1999, Big Finish Productions has been producing full-cast audio adventures set in the world of Doctor Who. Featuring specially composed music and cinematic sound effects, these stories are officially licensed by the BBC and star original cast members of the TV series.
To mark 25 years of this output, Big Finish Productions, in association with BBC Studios, Zebralution Podcast, Apple and Acast, are excited to announce Into the TARDIS, which will showcase fan-favourite stories from Big Finish’s back catalogue.
The stories will be presented in episodic instalments released weekly on Saturdays – like the original serialised broadcast of classic Doctor Who stories on the BBC. Each episode will feature a brand-new introduction read by Colin Baker (who played the Sixth Doctor on TV and continues to do so for Big Finish), as well as behind-the-scenes interviews.
Into the TARDIS will begin in March 2024, with the first two episodes serialising Death and the Queen. Originally released by Big Finish in 2016, this full-cast audio drama stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate, with a script by James Goss.
Big Finish chairman Jason Haigh-Ellery said: “As part of the celebration marking 25 years of Big Finish Doctor Who audio drama productions, I am delighted to announce that Big Finish are partnering with BBC Studios, Zebralution, Apple and Acast to launch Into the TARDIS – the first officially licensed Doctor Who audio drama podcast. This is an initiative that we have been working on for some time and I am particularly excited about, as it will bring Big Finish’s work to a far wider audience.”
Jan Paterson, director of audiobooks at BBC Studios, added: “For many years now, Big Finish has provided Doctor Who fans with thrilling audio dramas and we’re excited to see them extend their offering with a podcast. Into the TARDIS will allow the fanbase to extend their enjoyment of the show as well as open the Doctor Who audio drama world up to a whole new audience.”
Luisa Abraham, managing director at Zebralution Podcast, said: “We’re thrilled to have contributed our expertise to Big Finish for the launch of their new podcast, Into the TARDIS. Our collaboration marks the beginning of an exciting journey, and we eagerly anticipate sharing numerous captivating stories with the global Doctor Who community and welcoming countless new fans into the fold.”
Into the TARDIS will be available via all podcast platforms, and all listeners will be able to stream it for free with ads. Users of Apple Podcasts will have the additional option of subscribing for £2.99 a month, which will give early access to episodes and ad-free listening. A 3-day free trial of this subscription will also be available.

Paul Mescal, Andrew Scott: Irish actors are having a real breakthrough moment.
"I’m genuinely curious about and a little afraid of what is going to happen to a certain kind of film lover when All of Us Strangers comes out in late December. If the reaction to the press tour so far is any indication, expect mass fainting spells and/or riots. There are a bunch of reasons I have pegged this movie—a gay romance from director Andrew Haigh—to bring the Letterboxd crowd, me included, to our knees, but the chief one is that it stars not one but two certified internet darlings: Andrew Scott, best known as Fleabag’s Hot Priest, and Paul Mescal, who rocketed to fame via Normal People early on in the pandemic and has been an object of ardent fan obsession ever since.
Despite the movie’s English director and setting, the other thing Scott and Mescal have in common is that they’re Irish, which you’d think would make their coming together to maximize their joint slay a shoo-in for Irish movie moment of the year. But it turns out competition for that title is pretty stiff in 2023. In November alone, audiences saw Barry Keoghan make his mark on an English country estate in Saltburn and Michael Fassbender scoot through Paris in The Killer, the latter’s first major acting job in three years. This is after a summer absolutely dominated by Cork’s own Cillian Murphy, who played a Jewish American scientist in Oppenheimer with so much conviction that it matters not a whit that no one in history has ever looked more Irish. All of this came in what is still the same year that The Banshees of Inisherin, starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and Keoghan, was nominated for nine Academy Awards, and Mescal was up for best actor for Aftersun.
They didn’t actually win any of those Oscars, but that doesn’t change a growing body of evidence proving that these days, some of the buzziest stars hail from the Emerald Isle. Ask any film fan whom they’re excited about, and you’re likely to get an earful of Mescal, Keoghan, Saoirse Ronan, and so on. I’m not the first to point this out—in August, Elle declared that it was “hot Irish guy” summer. But summer has turned into fall, and the hot Irish guys (and gals) remain with us. During awards season, Mashable made a guide to the Irish “it” boys of the Oscars. Several months later, they’re still “it.” So, what’s the craic with this Irish invasion?
“Irish people tend to be very good-looking and charming,” Rachel Connolly, a novelist and critic who has written about Irish culture’s place in the world, told me via email. “That would have to have something to do with it I’d imagine.”
True, but why are they so good-looking and charming, and so many of them at once? When I asked Ruth Barton, a critic and film studies professor at Trinity College Dublin, what unites performers like Mescal, Scott, and Keoghan, she posited that they all embody “a kind of soft masculinity.”
Add Slate to the Insider Hollywood List.
"Soft Masculinity"? Isn't that the same crap that Majors was pushing?
#Irish#British#Australia#Canadian#Paul Mescal#Andrew Scott#Barry Keoghan#Cillian Murphy#WTF IS SOFT MASCULINITY?#WHAT BULLSHIT IS THIS?#Slate Writer Labels Irish Softly Masculine#Ant Man#Quantumania#No American Actors Allowed

helloo!! ☺️ how is gallifrey one going for you so far? 💖
Heey! Gallifrey One is going fab so far. I'm taking it easy, but it's good to be back! I met the ever so lovely Bonnie Langford and Colin Baker, with Michael Troughton and Frazer Hines today so it's been great.
I also happened to help Jason Haigh-Ellery (big boss of big finish) plan his schedule for the weekend as he was lost what he was doing so that was fun. I jokingly said I could become your next PA XD
But yeah, its good to be back and catch up with friends! Not fussed at all about Jodie or Chibnall, but I am having a blast cosplay watching and seeing all the obscure Doctor Who things at Gallifrey One.
It really is good to be back. And I have definitely missed the ribbon trading! :)

Top 5 films released so far this year
Here are my top 5 films released this year on either streaming or cinema release.
I have tried to foreground less obvious choices. As I enter the cinema I often enter a state of trance where I can fully immerse myself in the spectacle. My brain seems to switch to “wide open” mode where I feel a heightened emotional connection with the film. At home I try to recreate this by turning off all lights setting up my Monitor BX2 speakers and turning off my phone for the duration. Here are 5 films…my favourites so far for this year for Utter Sorcery my blog…
1. Perfect Days (Wim Wenders)…this extremely mellow and beautiful film portrays life as many of us live but without attaining the levels of zen like acceptance and calm Koji Yakusho manages in the course of the film. It’s beautifully shot and composed and the pacing is elegant too. A wonderful film and a way of life too. One for the collection.
2. All Of Us Strangers (Andrew Haigh)…to discuss what this melancholic and romantic drama is actually about maybe too much of a spoiler. However it boasts very astute and moving performances by Andrew Scott and Paul Mescale. It has a dreamy poetic sensibility with stunning cinematography from Jamie Ramsay. The emotional climax is worth every minute.
3. Late Night With The Devil (Cameron Cairnes/ Colin Cairnes) An unerving and ingenious horror using as it’s mechanism a gameshow that goes……well no spoilers. It’s good to see David Dasmalchian in a lead role as he is excellent as the down on his luck gameshow host. It’s almost like a nightmare version of Alan Partridge’s “This Time” where we are left questioning what is in fact reality. Every moment of this film blew my mind.
4. Abigail (Radio Silence) I’m a big fan of Radio Silence aka Matt Betinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Their irreverent and blackly humorous take on the horror genre is invigorating and almost anarchic. A team of criminals capture a young girl and take her to a remote mansion to wait until the morning. Needless to say……no spoilers…try not to watch the trailers for this one as there’s lots of big surprises. A potential cross-over classic.
5. Civil War (Alex Garland) a very matter of fact…unsentimental and coldly observed look at what really could happen in USA. It’s brutality and bleakness is almost shrouded in dreamy mystery. Contextless we follow a brilliant Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura though a land of danger and horror as they traverse the country. I was particularly impressed by Cailee Spaeny a young and ambitious photographer. This is close to the bone. And a devastating watch.

My top movies of 2023
Of 103 new releases I saw this year, these were the best (and, below, the worst and the most befuddling):
10. PERFECT DAYS: Snatching beauty from the mundane is easier said than done, and easier rendered with shlock than sophistication. Wim Wenders pulls it off in this gorgeous story of a Tokyo toilet cleaner who’s attuned to the world with poetry and hard-won wisdom.
9. JOYLAND: One of many luminous shots tracks a backup erotic dancer driving home a giant cardboard cutout of his transgender frontwoman — as close as he’ll come to holding her hand in public. In this vivid Pakistani family drama, social strictures squeeze men, women, and everyone in between.
8. YOU HURT MY FEELINGS: Ordinary human relationships get so complex they make your head spin in Nicole Holofcener’s talky, thorny, funny study of the hard truths and sweet lies that populate every day. “Can you shut up and keep talking?”
7. BEYOND UTOPIA: This pained and profound documentary about North Korean defectors contains some of the most remarkable footage I’ve seen, inside one family’s treacherous attempt at escape. We see so scarcely into the journeys of millions of people fleeing disaster all around the world each year. Here is a beam of light.
6. FOUR DAUGHTERS: In this extraordinary, line-blurring documentary, a lively and haunted formal innovation unspools the story of a Tunisian family, and the moments when playing a role — mother, daughter, wife, citizen, goth, rebel, Satanist, zealot — becomes all too real.
5. BARBIE: I went in skeptical: all this just to sell toys? One of 2023’s lessons is to trust Greta Gerwig no matter what. Too many Barbie partisans damn it with faint praise as simply a fun movie (and it deliriously is). But Gerwig layers in the emotion of innocence lost and the moral rectitude of interrogating our consumerist inheritance: ballast for the fantasia.
4. ALL OF US STRANGERS: Andrew Haigh’s London ghost story has some twists up its sleeve, which makes the forthrightness of its emotion all the more bracing. Death, of course, makes strangers of us all. Love collapses the distance.
3. KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON: A whole movie told through Robert De Niro’s eyewear: the chessboard reflected in the glasses of the King; the riding goggles that make him look like an owl, portent of death. One of a million details that add up to a masterpiece in Martin Scorsese’s dramatization of the clash between two worlds and two ways of being.
2. OPPENHEIMER: Now I am become death, destroyer of worlds. This is the bomb.
1. PAST LIVES: The brilliance of Celine Song’s play on inyeon is not just the wisdom of its story of love, immigration, and divided selves, but their aching visual illustration in a climactic tracking shot that moves through emotional time. Greta Lee is marvelous. Sometimes I cry just thinking about it.
Honorable mentions: MAY DECEMBER … POOR THINGS
