Studying the teacher, I hope that the struggles and achievements my characters make throughout this tale can be your own as well. I’ve always been apprehensive about sharing them to the world, but like all my close friends, I want them to pursue their dreams and goals in life and to be all that they can be, and same goes for my characters in HOMELAND. They wish to see the world and touch the hearts of many with their tales of battle, struggle of feuds, tangles of romance, and the overshadowing secret holding everything together. Book by Angelos Michalopoulos "TWO TRUTHS AND A WALL IN BETWEEN" At the edge of a verdant valley, the ruins of a dilapidated farmhouse lie in the no man’s land between two warring armies that have been mercilessly fighting each other for some months now. The farmhouse has been completely wrecked, except for a wall right in the middle, the only thing left standing. Two wounded soldiers, cut off from their comrades, a long way from the logic that brought them to where they are and coming from almost diametrically opposed sides of the valley, barely reach the farmhouse seeking shelter, each one on a different side of the wall. Seeking milk and honey, leaving a residue of destruction.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a theatrical play, and I had the pleasure of spending the Friday night of a long weekend with my girlfriends at the Factory Theatre enjoying a play called “How Black Mother Say I Love You”, written and directed by Canadian comedian and play writer Trey Anthony who is also best known for her successful play “Da Kink in my Hair”. The play overall was a combination of comedy, drama and emotions capturing the repercussions of a mother who left her young children for six years, to seek out opportunities in providing a better life for her family. Not knowing she would be faced with a wearisome lifestyle, left with no choice but to work several jobs to keep her family above water.

The play begins years later with Daphne – a Mother who is now terminally ill with cancer, and her daughters. Claudette the eldest daughter is the unaccepted lesbian, who for years kept a wedge between herself and her family. Valerie is the so called black woman who married a successful white man, and she is now faced with a crumbled marriage, after her husband’s infidelity with a younger white woman. The ghost of their younger half sister Cloe makes several appearances throughout the play, on occasion playing the air violin. I suppose this effect was to add a dramatic impact to the scenes. 

Both Valerie and Claudette have come to their mothers aid, and in this undertaking, they are pulled into several contentious arguments about their mother’s decision to leave them behind as children. While Daphne believes the love for her children was displayed by carrying them for nine months, and working her fingers to the bone to provide for them. Claudette has familiarized her mother’s actions with abandonment, and it has taken a toll for the worst on their relationship.

Trey Anthony speaks on her own encounter when her mother left her at a young age, she explains the inspiration of the pain, humour and healing from her family life and how it ties into her work.

Overall I really enjoyed the play, and It comes to show you that the things we do not say are the important things to say, and those 3 words “I LOVE YOU” hold such a large impact in our lives.
