Writing Isn’t A Real Job

I would be a billionaire if I got a nickle every time I heard that sentence. 

When I started to write - and I mean knew writing was my calling so I never had a notebook out of my sight - I was around 13 years old. The thrill I got from creating a world that only I knew the intricate details of and could choose what I wanted to share with my readers couldn’t be compared to anything else in my life. I loved having people read my work and tell me what they enjoyed or what I could improve on. Ink was my blood and words were my breath but when I told my parents I wanted to be a writer when I grew up they said.

“Writing isn’t a real job.”

So, since I was at the age where I believed adults knew everything I stirred my attention towards education. I took what I loved from writing, which was... well writing and sharing to work my way towards becoming an English teacher. In high school I had good teachers and difficult teachers. The good ones were the one’s that saw and embraced the fact my life revolved around the written word. When my friends and I would eat lunch I would be typing away on my laptops and when I was done taking notes in class I would go back to drafting my novel. I had teachers that engaged me in conversation, listened to me talk about the book I was one day going to publish, and was guided by those that could see my passion. I also had difficult teachers who took away my laptop or took my notebooks that told me I should focus on tangible goals, not fantasy. I should focus my attention on my academics and my mind towards ‘a real job’.

I graduated high school with honours and went to a university 16 hours away from my hometown. I studied psychology and English with a base in Education for grades 8-12. I didn’t write much those years. I had been convinced I had to get a real job and writing wasn’t it. For five years I worked on a degree that I turned into my new passion. My computer files holding the world I created and the book I said I’d always publish went untouched. My notebook once filled with character designs and backstory was not riddled with assignments and psych notes to review for an exam. 

When I graduated from university with the skills and knowledge to get myself a ‘real job’ it appeared that my Education degree was nothing but a fantasy. No one would hire me. An English/ Social Science teacher was one of the most common teachers and those that wanted to teach had to leave Canada or work on a Reserve. Both were tangible options offering worldly experience but I had a partner who had a job and family that I didn’t want to leave behind. So, I tried my hardest to find work.

As I slipped into a depression, believing like many my age that I failed somewhere along the line I realized I did. All my life there was one thing I loved doing. One thing that I never looked at as work and that I always tried to improve upon. I was 23 years old and it was then I realized that I did fail. I failed to listen to myself. I failed to listen to my heart and where it was trying to guide me. I had listened to all these people telling me that ‘writing isn’t a real job’ that I believed them and forgot the one thing I knew I could do.

Writing is a real job. It connects us to our past and gives us hope for the future. Words carry emotion and teach us lessons. Authors share stories that inspire, educate, and motivate future generations. Books help us escape the world we live in and show us that anything is possible. Writing isn’t easy. There are hours spent typing, editing, planning, rewriting, scrapping, and hoping. You will cry, suffer, laugh, and love for your work. There will be people that will tell you what you’ve written isn’t good enough and what you’re doing isn’t real work. 

They are welcome to their opinion. They can say whatever they want about the work I do or the books I publish. All I’ll tell them is, ‘ Ink is my blood and words are my breath. Writing is my life and it is a real job to me.’
