“Our Lady of Regla is at the same time Yemayá, the mother to all. She holds the first woman Eve in her arms, her solemn expression indicating her knowledge of future suffering Eve and her descendants will undergo. A close study of Yemayá’s face reveals scars on her cheeks. This scarification represents powerful tribal markings of identification and beautification in Yoruba culture. Its presence works to reclaim different ideals of beauty. With elongated limbs cradling the baby Eve, the painting also speaks to motherhood.”

Mese Nero (Black Moth)

Since the black moth was young, it has been alone in this vast world. Yearning for the company of the other moths, it would watch as they flew away whenever it arrived. But why? Was it because the black moth was different from the rest? Or did they simply want nothing to do with it? Over time, the black moth grew more and more isolated, never having anyone to share its presence with.

Years passed, and though the black moth slowly matured, the loneliness persisted. No other moths seemed to want to stay. Then, after what felt like an eternity, some moths finally lingered when the black moth arrived. Having spent most of its life in solitude, the black month quickly became attached to those who stayed. Like a moth to a flame, the black moth was drawn to them, feeling warmth and joy from the rare acceptance it had longed for.

As time went on, the black moth still struggled with attachment, wary of getting too close to any moth that might leave. But whenever another moth stayed, it couldn't help but feel overwhelmed with happiness to be in their presence. The black moth would cling to them, wishing to spend every moment together. But deep down, it knew that the other moths had their own journeys to continue. And as they left, the black moth would feel sadness creep in, longing for their return. It would wait, hoping that someday, they would come back to stay.
