A bit of onstage news: Neil Gaiman’s Odd and the Frost Giants

This coming Christmas (it’s never too early, you know) @neil-gaiman ‘s Odd and the Frost Giants will be coming to Unicorn Theater stage!

(19 November to 31 December 2024)

From the article:

“Newly appointed artistic director of the Unicorn Theatre, Rachel Bagshaw, has announced two world premiere stage adaptations as part of her inaugural season.

She commented: “I am delighted to start my tenure at the Unicorn by announcing two major shows in our 2024/25 season as a sneak peek of the work to come. I’m hugely excited to be directing Odd and the Frost Giants this Christmas, a show that promises a wondrous mix of magic, bravery and humour, and captures both our imaginations and hearts in its storytelling.”

Does sepau!Leo still like magicians/magic like he does in the show? Mostly referencing off the "clothes don't make the turtle" episode, curious if it's the same pretty much in your au

Hm, well. Maybe? Human magic shows are really cool considering magic doesn't actually exist in real life, and the fact that magicians are able to use tricks to make it appear like actual magic is happening.

But if Leo grew up surrouned by yōkai, who use actual magic all the time, including HIM, doesn't human fake-magic kinda lose it's appeal...?

At the same time, maybe Leo would still appreciate that, humans being able create the illusion of magic through "smoke and mirrors" and such. Making it seem like magic is being performed when it isn't really is honestly incredibly impressive on it's own.

With that in mind, I'd like to think Leo would have a lot of appreciation for human magic shows

just went to a sleep no more style production of Romeo and Juliet in a 5000 sqft warehouse and it kicked so much ass. what a phenomenal show and so smart to do it with r+j because everyone's familiar enough with the story that you don't feel like you're missing out or not able to follow the plot when you decide to go see what the side characters are up to while the main action happens. and it was fun to feel like I was validating all of the characters who clearly had rehearsed things to do "off stage" and didn't have a guaranteed audience

but what really made me realize that I was going to be sooo obnoxious enthusing about this production in the future was when after tybalt and mercutio died, they were resurrected by the fey and mystical apothecary as ghosts who could see the audience for the first time and couldn't interact with the actors anymore and they joined us in milling around and watching their loved ones mourn them and having to see the story unfold from the sidelines and ahhaaahfjjfbshdj

like i followed ghost mercutio for a long time and he spent most of it wondering what his purpose in the story is supposed to be now that he's unexpectedly in his epilogue, getting exposed to the text of the prologue of the show and realizing romeo and juliet are fated to die, and playing the cello to comfort romeo in the only way he can while romeo is stuck in exile. i told him to play wonderwall and he refused, which was fair

This was my favorite pinball machine as a kid. (Followed closely by Star Wars Episode 1--tripping Jar Jar was always fun.) Playing with a controller on Pinball FX3 isn't quite the same, but I'm glad I can play it again at all.

The actual pinball machine costs around $14,000, which is pretty much impossible for me to ever own. So this will do.

Our invention exchange this week is based on those beer can caddy hats that shirtless obnoxious guys wear at baseball games. Yeah, only ours are built for whisper-thin, musky Bohemian types.

Watching an YouTube video about the failed musical "Carrie" and the difficulties of doing the pig blood bucket. I'm nodding along, like, yeah, that makes sense. The movie could do continuous cuts and close-ups showing the bucket about to drop to build tension. Musical doesn't have that. Plus, it would be a horrible mess to drop actual red-staining liquid on real life actors, sets pieces and costumes that need to be reused several times a week, sometimes multiple times a day, for months. So far, it makes sense.

And I'm sitting here thinking of ways to maneuver around it. I'm thinking, hhmmm, probably they should do a Broadway quick-tearaway-change for the dress, to imply it's now drenched without actually drenching anything. And the building up of tension, well, duh, you just gotta use the music for that. And maybe they could use something like paper or cloth to simulate the blood, like a bucket of red streamers or a really large sheet that would cover the whole actress for the quick change............

...................they had two actors run up to Carrie and tip a small glass of blood on top of her.
