Sign-ups are open for MXTX Remix 2024 (@mxtxremix) right now and they close on February 9th. It's a gift exchange for people who already have MDZS, SVSSS, and TGCF fanworks, either art or fic. You can find details such as the eligibility rules, the FAQ, and the sign-up form itself on the AO3 collection profile.

I participated in the MXTX Remix event back in 2021 and it was a lot of fun! I ended up turning someone else's Canon Divergence Liushen fic ("tangled in the hanging tree" by technorat) into a Star Wars / Space Opera AU version of itself, in which Shen Yuan was a symbiote attached to Shen Jiu and they bickered a lot.

I also received "demons don't write what they know" from atarah, which is a Demon Liu Mingyan / Human Sha Hualing fic, inspired by my own Moshang Human/Demon Role Reversal AU.

It's on a shorter time scale than a Big Bang event, so you don't have to make a commitment half-a-year or more in advance: assignments go out on February 13th and assignments are due March 29th. The minimum requirements are also much more manageable: a complete 1,000-word fic or a clean piece of lineart. I think it's potentially a fun entry point into fan events if you've already start creating art or fic for one of these fandoms and are personally interested into dipping your toes into gift exchanges.

There is the pressure of transforming someone else's work into a gift for them, but it can also be fun to play with another fan's stuff, using someone else's story as a structure rather than starting from scratch. Though definitely not for everyone, it can also be interesting to open up your own work to someone else's transformation, and see what about your art or writing speaks to someone else. Examples of previous MXTX Remix works (2021, 2022, 2023) can be found in their parent collection: MXTX Remix.

This has probably been said before but the svsss fandom is just so fun.

First, the fics! Oh look another shen yuan disciple au? Oh but binghe is his shixiong? Read and kudosed! Oh another shen yuan disciple au? But shen jiu is his shidi??? Devoured! Oh another shen yuan peak lord au? With shen jiu AND binghe as his disciples? Oof guess I gotta clear my calendar. Demonic shen yuan? I better see some monster fucking! Shen jiu gets reborn again? Well- and on and on and on and on.

And the ships of course! Yeah I ship bingqiu! But also bingliushen, liushen, bingliu, bingjiu, qijiu, jiuyuan, zhushen, qijiushen, tianjiu, moshang, cumplane, mingling, and of course, bing(mei)bing(ge)qiu!

Usually in other fandoms there are only one or two pairings I feel the urge to gnaw on. In svsss though, it literally depends on the fucking day.

re: binghe/bingqiu -- yeah "disquieting" is such a good way to phrase it. its weird because svsss is the only fictional media where i slowly grew out of my enjoyment of the main couple the longer i thought about it. some of it is very much due to my own personal... complicated feelings about power dynamics in a relationship, but you get the sense that sqq's insistence that binghe means well or can't help himself is constantly belied by his almost calculated actions. which is why i think i struggle with shipping bingqiu now (although i initially was hardcore for them when i started reading the novel). i still like the concept (of a transmigrator falling in love with a fictional protagonist and then using his knowledge of the world/story to save the character) but binghe specifically makes me shy away in discomfort too much. i think maybe that's why i have a soft spot for moshang because they kind of have that dynamic but minus the calculated manipulation of binghe (mobei jun is portrayed as just being so genuinely clueless due to the demon-human cultural differences that it gives allowances to his actions. also he changes quickly once he finds out that sqq doesn't like being hit/hurting while i don't feel like sqq's protests are ever genuinely met with acceptance and a desire to change on lbh's part). anyway, sorry that was a bit tangential but i really resonate with what you said and its a relief to know i'm not alone in that.

canon Liujiu is a relationship of missed opportunities

oh, what a lovely way to encapsulate so much!! yes YES absolutely like i think we can all agree that sj did himself no favours with his actions and so much of his personality is genuinely unlikable (like he's just... nasty), but he's also such a product of his circumstances and in trying to save lqg shows a capacity to fight against his own nature which isn't acknowledged enough. it... makes me kind of sad whenever i see someone say something like "good riddance" about sj kind of essentially dying with no acknowledgement in svsss (other than potentially yqy just knowing, but never being able to acknowledge, that sj is just gone).

a lot of my adoration for liujiu stems from pennydaniel's fic forever and ever and ever and ever, where the author's note at the end of the fic lived in my brain for like 3 weeks:

i think an added point to yours is that lqg's brand of .... blunt pursuit (wooing) may also be one of the few ways i could see sj not feeling threatened or manipulated, particularly in the context of his background and overall mistrust of men. i also think if lqg had survived, even if they hadn't progressed beyond barely civil interactions, his honour would have demanded he defend sqq against at least hhp's machinations, which would go a long way to have sqq understand that he can actually trust/put his reliance on his martial siblings.

just... the idea that lqg and sj can and should naturally tick so many of each other's boxes and specific character needs and cover each other's flaws just pleases me SO greatly.

(hmmmm.... you know i've never particularly noticed it but now that you mention it there is a bit of hostility towards yqy overall in liujiu fics. i think its because lqg's ride or die loyalty naturally sits in juxtaposition to yqy's middling defence of sqq.

having said that, and feel free to ignore this if its not your cup of tea, but technorat's fire spreading all around is a lovely 'what if lbh raised sj and he ends up much less dysfunctional' au that has both realistic liujiu and yqy winds up still very firmly in fond and doting qi-ge territory which i adored.)

i think my main issue with qijiu is how yqy's treatment of sqq doesn't ever really help sqq. like he "protects" sqq but in ways that almost highlights and worsens everyone's opinion of sqq. (although please correct me if i'm wrong about this! i realise some of this could be fanon influenced.) but if its true, it's selfish in a way i find frustrating (and reminds me of binghe) because yqy's supposed to be really good with people/understanding people/diplomacy which is why he's the head of the sect. but i can also totally understand why the "mutually destructive devotion" is incredibly appealing even if its not my thing. xD

one reason i think liu qingge has such great potential is that he's one of the only characters entirely free from the PIDM narrative. because he dies early in PIDM, sqq isn't coming into every conversation and interaction expecting lqg to adhere to a preconceived script. this allows sqq to actually see lqg as a person and for his words and actions to be taken at face value.

i just think this is great potential for sqq to still be completely oblivious or in denial about lbh and yqy's attentions (because he's so fixated on how bad/complicated PIDM!sqq's relationships are with them) whilst also catching wind of lqg's growing feelings for him because he isn't hampered by any preconceived notions of what they're dynamic "should" be.

so give me sqq noticing the way lqg's mannerism soften around him, how his gruffness changes, how he spends more time just having tea with sqq even after his meridians have been cleansed as they start to have civil conversation about sect business. recognising lqg's care in returning his fans; seeking common ground over their shared love of monster hunting (even if lqg just cares about fighting them, can he maybe smash them in such a way that shixiong can study them afterwards?) and discussions on cultivation techniques and the differences between bai zhan and qing jing styles.

sqq who is so just so grateful to have someone in his corner, someone he feels safe with, who he doesn't have to second guess during every conversation. someone who was never supposed to be around by this point in the narrative, and so is entirely shen qingqui's.
