Day 14 - Telling

Curiously A‘viloh looked up to the blue sky and tried to imagine what the star constellation Rael talked about looked like here in the Sea of Clouds. A’viloh had asked about their studies and for a while now Rael had tried to explain to him the basics of astrology.

„So what do the stars tell you? Will we soon be able to leave Coerthas and go back home?“, he wondered and turned a tarot card around between his fingers.

Rael shook their head.

„You know, astrology is not exactly fortune telling, A‘vi…“

„That’s a shame…“, A‘viloh sighed and plucked an apple from the bag between them.

„Besides…“, Rael added with a bit of hesitation. „Eorzea isn’t my home…“

His ears twitched and A‘viloh sat up as if he just remembered a very important detail he had entirely forgotten.

„I am sorry… I’m behaving like an idiot and forgot you probably feel even worse…“

„No.“, Rael said but kept browsing through the astrology book in their lap looking for an illustration they had wanted to show the Miqo’te. „This is not what I was trying to say…“

„I remember you said you were homesick. Is that what’s bothering you lately? I can imagine this place must be horribly different from your home?“, A‘viloh asked and eyed the viera, hoping to see some reaction, something that would make him understand them a little better.

For a moment Rael just silently stared at the book in their lap, but clearly without reading it, then they closed it and instead turned their gaze to A‘viloh. „It indeed is very different and you are right…but that’s not all of it…“

Attentively the Miqo’te looked at Rael and waited for them to continue. It was very apparent that Rael chose their next words carefully.

„You know, I realised you and me are not so different after all. I am not at all better than you. Not wiser, not more unfailing and certainly not braver. Everything that every made me special was my magic but—“

The screech of a bird echoed through the air and both of them looked up to see one pass by far over their heads. The silhouette was difficult to recognise from this distance but A‘viloh thought the call had hounded like a falcon. The Ishgardians sometimes used falcons and owls to deliver messages over longer distances and judging its direction he assumed that this one could be headed for the Rosehouse.

„What were you trying to say?“

As he looked back to Rael, the Viera’s eyes still followed the bird gracefully sailing through the sky on silent wings.

„Mh?“, they snapped back to attention as A‘viloh spoke again. „Oh… yes! Uhm… Astrology! I was trying to say that it helps greatly to not feel as useless around here! As you know I am mostly trained in magic but you see, even here in Ishgard as strange as it might be, there are still new and interesting things to learn even for me!“

A‘viloh eyed them sceptically. Their voice sounded entirely different now, much more casual than before and somehow he doubted that this was what Rael had been about to say.

But why wouldn’t they be telling the truth?

„You see, all I am trying to tell you, A‘vi, is that maybe you should try learning something new too? If only to keep you busy until Yugiri returns with information. Lord Haurchefant once mentioned one of his friends is developing a new fighting technique at the Skysteel Manufactory, that is so easy to learn he even recruits common people with no experience in fighting at all. Maybe you could visit and see if it interests you?“, Rael explained and smiled friendly at the Miqo’te. But it wasn’t the same smile Rael wore when they truly were happy about something. It was the smile they used on strangers. To reassure them that everything was perfectly fine, even if that occasionally was a lie.

“I don’t know…”, A’viloh answered, more wondering about if there was a way to ask Rael about it without accusing them of lying. But that opportunity seemed gone.

1. nolanel rly wants to take her to coerthas. then he doesnt know what. a part of him forgets that its all snow so he gets smacked w remembrance each time he goes out, which pokes a hole in his idea, but the eastern Lowlands are close enough to Gridania that its not so bad there (other than it being far and ppl/the miners will recognize him and he doesnt have any plan but “get there and chill tf out somehow”)

2. nol doesnt suspect sae of anything, so if she does do anything suspicious (get scared of inquisitors), he either a) blames himself for blaming her of smth, or b) blames the person making her act that way + himself anyway

3. He’s wayyy to self-conscious abt possibly hurting her for a while, sometimes to the point that it’s inconvenient, and at its deepest lvl, a form of self-punishment. Like, he’d hold her wrist instead of her hand, and so lightly that its 90% just sae holding her hand up so she doesnt slip away. the loophole is if it’s necessary to touch her, tho, like lifting her into the saddle–his mind just blanks/shuts down temporarily so he doesnt overthink

4. sae has much better manners than him. if nol’s not outnumbered by nobles or higher officers, he doesnt really try to set an example–it’s too tiring. he kinda feels bad abt it when shes offering to pour tea and asking how many sugars he wants, but hes already reaching for the pot to pour one for himself

5. he wants to get her a music box, damn it, but he doesn’t know what song, plus the crozier snobs keep trying to sell him ones w a gold pin drum and damn it, he does not have that kind of money. 

6. anyway she’s prob knocked on his breastplate like a door out of curiosity of what sound it’d make and that’d just pitch him from 50 to 500 embarrassment lvls and he’d die (cover his face in his hands) on the very spot

7. i imagine sae hums while she does errands sometimes, n then the song gets stuck in nol’s head until theyre both humming or singing it and it becomes “wth are u saying, clearly Green Grow the Rushes O ends ‘one is one and one alone’ not 'stands alone’” and so on w lyric variants

8. they prob get into this one phase w letters where they try to communicate in all enchiridion verses as a competition after somebody just went “Imania 5:12” and then when u check the verse its just “No.” also, if he comes across any flowers, he tries to press and send them to her. hopefully she doesnt consult some flower dictionary bc hes 1) sending them at random 2) doesn’t know a thing abt flower language 3) how was he supposed to know lavender is mean to send, they smell nice 

9. nolanel gets possessed one day by the need to chop down a starlight tree, so he does, but sae can’t keep it in the servant quarters, and he can’t keep it at his house, and now they’ve got this tree and its dying and oh gods. nol ends up having to make it into firewood, but he takes a ring from the trunk for an ornament, and they decorate some tree out in coerthas instead w ribbon n things

10. nol mentions offhand sometime that some noble’s eating up his time by making him serve at a ball but Sae Wants To Come so its like an awkward 8th grade dance w having to pick her up, take her there, crash course on expectations vs reality, and oh gods i was busy worrying abt this all day and i forgot to eat so how many fancy appetizers can i eat before it becomes obvious

3. which muse is the trickiest to get into character for? 

OOF. It can be hard for me to get into any character if I’m not feeling it, but right now I’d say it’s a toss up between Kazushige and Renh: Kazu is a calm, collected, stand-offish individual who really doesn’t want anyone to waste his time, so it’s hard buckling down to try and get him invested in a scene when he’s already going into things with the mindset that he doesn’t want to be there, or doesn’t care what the other characters have to say, so it’s my job as mun to steer his interactions, and it can get exhausting.

Renh is my trash son and I love him dearly but he is a mess and I really haven’t wanted to crawl into his headspace lately. I’m working on a plot to get him moving upwards, so hopefully I’ll be back to playing him regularly soon!

6. which one of your muses have you been playing the longest? 

Renh! He started as a character on a NWN persistent world RP server, and I liked him so much that he followed me through GW2 and eventually into FFXIV. This has been the most difficult iteration of him to get into, and sometimes I regret making him a Keeper (I think I probably should have stuck with Hyur, but none of the faces looked right!), but I’ve been plugging along trying to craft up his back story and see where the themes his character was built around get him here. He’s a lot more volatile, and a lot more vulnerable in this iteration.

12. what is something everyone should know about your muses before interacting?

...Almost all of them need individual warning labels, probably. 

Renh is volatile, inflammatory, WILL piss people off to where they want to throw his ass in the nearest dumpster (and he’ll deserve it). He’s not a bad guy, he’s loyal to a fault, but he just really doesn’t want anyone to think he cares, because it might mean they start to care about him. He can’t have that. He’s made his sweet childhood friend cry so many times. He really needs to work on his own garbage before he can be a decent person.

Tajha cares a whole lot more than she lets on. She might be flippant, dismissive, and business-oriented, but truth is she doesn’t want to see Eorzea going to the hells in a handbasket, so she’s doing her best to make it a better place the only way she knows how (through crime??). She also dabbles in forbidden artifacts and dark magic, is technically an alchemist, and a doctor if you’re desperate. Just don’t fuck with people she cares about.

Islin is a spunky go-getter who just loves to be in the right place at the wrong time to kick ass and take names. She’s warm, she’s cheerful, she’s probably going to flirt with the ladies--don’t take it personally--but she’s also young, and naive, and believes in second chances. She’s definitely a dragoon and there’s definitely something weird about her aether. She’s way stronger than she looks, has a good moral compass. Don’t ask her about her connection to Ishgard (but please do).

Beset probably doesn’t have time for you if you didn’t hire her or aren’t a target, but she might humour you anyway. She’s my most “anime” character because she was technically created to be a sub-boss for a running plot arc, so I tend to keep her out of combat plots (and she won’t fight any schmoe off the street, anyway). I desperately want her to develop as a thinking, feeling person, however, pls try to befriend this weird red lizard.

Kazushige is a tough nut to crack. He has a dark and sordid past he doesn’t talk about. He has a job he doesn’t talk about. He basically has a life he doesn’t talk about. Rumour has it he’s a book fixer and if you need the red out of your ledgers, he’s the guy to ask in and around Kugane. It’s honestly probably easiest to get in touch with him if you’re established as part a recordskeeper, crime syndicate, or Garlean, and need something vanished out of official(or unofficial) records. Of all my character, he’s the one I’m most keen on crafting pre-established relationships with because honestly it might be the only way to get him talking. Note that he is 110% a noncombatant.

A’mariss is .......................my metagame/plot device character. She has a busted Echo that is constantly bombarding her with visions past, present and future, at random and without warning. Sometimes she projects these visions on other, poor unfortunate souls. Sometimes she gets called places, and she doesn’t know why, until that scratching at the base of her skull goes quiet. Sometimes she calls other people to her, and they have no idea why. Sometimes she’s met two, three different iterations of the same person because of her visions and you could get greeted with “which one are you?” She is vaguely an astrologian. She hunts Voidsent because it puts coin in her pocket, and coin in her pocket means she can drink, or buy somnus to block out the visions for a time. None of the above applies for unplanned RP because I don’t pop that stuff on folks on a whim, but if you need to explore some weird aetherial bullshit or need to have your character/some folks go on a WHAT IF scenario, I am so down to plot it out. She also has a huge, kind heart and doesn’t like to see any suffering because she sees so much, she doesn’t need to perpetuate it.

Kouga is a naive kid with an inherited sword who really, really wants to be an adventurer so he can gain experience and join a mercenary group and learn how to be a badass. He doesn’t really come with any warnings except that he’s sweet and genuine and basically a puppy. Love him.

oh gosh I definitely have several “types” that I gravitate towards but in the interest of levity, I’ll say I love heroes (or characters in general) who carry and reconcile their burdens/responsibilities in a compelling way. Take Aragorn (LotR) and Noctis (FFXV)… two very different “men who would be king” in two very different contexts, but both develop and come to terms with it in their own way throughout their respective stories. It’s the journey toward that acceptance that I love, especially if it involves resisting or even running from it first.

PVP ENGAGED:

when it comes to fighting other muses, you’d really have to try to seriously engage them verbally or physically--surprisingly, none of them are really all that rowdy?? like you’d really have to go out of your way to get into a fight with them because they’ll try to dismiss it as much as possible. most likely 2 fight would be Drowsy, least likely would be Valris! please beat up avaldr

PVE CONTENT CONFIRMED:

when it comes to my own fighting amongst themselves, most likely is DEFINITELY avaldr and valris. those two actively dislike each other with a P A S S I O N. avaldr is jealous of how seemingly content valris is with life all the time and how many meaningful connections he has, and valris is envious of how put-together avaldr’s life seems and how he has a legitimate goal in life.

though they’re both pretty dismissive of violence, i’m actually gonna go ahead and say valris would be the one to engage avaldr first--well, after being verbally derided about things he doesn’t really want to hear about himself, anyways!

“I suppose the answer is a bit obvious, but I would choose Aoife. In terms of skills, yes, she’s quite formidable. Not only is she incredibly knowledgeable about aether, but she’s much more talented than many of the chirurgeons— if not all— that served in the Temple Knights. She’s saved my life more times than I can count,” She gushed, eyes nearly sparkling.

Talia leaned back after a moment, adopting a more serious expression, “But, most of all, when fighting together… Aoife and I have this incomparable synergy, forged through many hard-fought battles. There is no one I would rather have fight at my side.”
