I have seen so much discourse recently about this idea and of people wanting algorithms and like/dislike for fanfic, and that is such a wild idea to me.

I grew up in a low SES rural family in the midwest. We didn’t have a lot, but one thing that was always important to my parents, especially my mother was literacy. We always had books in my house. Tons of them. And if we didn’t have it we went to our local library almost weekly to supplement our bookshelves. And I remember being an early teen/tween and trying to figure out what to read and my mom saying something along the lines of, “just pick something that looks interesting, read the back or check out the blurb, and if it seems interesting read it and if not put it back. The worst that can happen is you check it out, get a few pages in and decide you hate it and return it.” And it was something that stuck with me. There was never any pressure to finish a book or article or whatever if i was reading it for fun, and there wasn’t and still isn’t a consequence for deciding I didn’t like a book and not finishing it. It doesn’t mean the book is bad, it’s just not for me.

When I discovered fanfiction I treated it the same way. To this day if I come across something and it vibes with me I’ll try it and if it isn’t my cup of tea, oh well. I can go back to the results list and try again. But just because I don’t like it, doesn’t mean someone else won’t come along and enjoy it. The only punishment for reading a fic you don’t like, is the one you give yourself by reading it. We’re all unique humans with complex tastes and interests. You see it how we express ourselves and what we eat and what media we consume. But we can’t whitewash everything just because it doesn’t fit one specific genre of what someone likes. It would be like going down a cereal aisle and only having corn flakes.

Writing and fan media is art just like any other main stream publicized art and choice of consumption should be similar. If you don’t like thriller novels, you wouldn’t pick one up and expect to enjoy it. But that doesn’t mean thrillers shouldn’t be allowed to be published. It’s the same with fanfiction and other fan media.

Idk, just, be good humans. And only say stuff/leave comments if you’d feel okay with having someone say it to you.

decidedly unfriendly reminder that fanfiction is written by real people with real feelings for free in their free time. it's a labour of love and something to cherish. if you come across a fic that you don't enjoy, that's totally fine, but it is your due diligence as a fellow fan and decent human being to click away. leaving mean comments, absurd rating systems or harassing writers in their inbox while hiding behind an anonymous icon is not an acceptable manner to behave in any fandom and online space ever. it's disgustingly entitled, wildly disrespectful and only serves to discourage people from sharing their writing in a community that is meant to be fun and supportive. the next time you read something you don't enjoy, stop reading it and move on with your day. read something you like and leave kudos and a nice comment there instead. have some common sense and don't be a fucking asshole. it's not that fucking difficult.

feeling a bit generous today, so for anyone who needs these, here are some tips for writing blue lock specifically (also some bonus facts at the end)

- right off the bat, don’t let popularity and likes on your posts be the only thing on your mind. when you write, make sure you’re also enjoying what you’re writing. doing this stuff only for fame and fans is a bit sad, but not only that, the quality of your work will decrease due to less passion.

- if you want it to get popular and fast, writing for rin, kaiser, or nagi is your best bet. they’re easily the most popular when it comes to this part of the fanbase, and people will eat up ANYTHING sweet when it comes to these nonchalant men.

- listening to music while you write can be helpful. i know it’s not for everyone, but listening to a playlist that matches the vibe of what im writing helps me lock in really well. here is a playlist for writing something fluffy and lovey. here is a playlist for writing something angst and made from pure sadness. here is a playlist for something obsessive and intense. here is a playlist for something that really makes you think about your life choices. (yes, i made all of these playlists, and these are the ones that i listen to)

- using the egoist bible to confirm information is immensely helpful. not only is anyone else who reads the egoist bible see those small Easter eggs, but adding those small hints about their character can also be cute and makes for better writing.

- use colored dividers. i get mine from this post (thank you to firefly graphics!!!), and make sure you use the colors in order with the characters. for example, i use teal for rin, dark blue for kaiser, and yellow for bachira.

- using song lyrics or song names as titles or inspiration is easy for ideas and for attention. many times, i will listen to a song and realize how much it matches with the blue lock boys or realize that it’ll make an incredible prompt for a drabble. for example, in no. 1 party anthem, there is the iconic “the look of love” part. for that, i made a post with the same title as the lyric and made it about how their eyes are when they are in love.

- putting 2-4 characters in a prompt drabble is the ideal amount. it gets you more popularity quicker due to more characters and more tags, but also, anyone who only started reading the prompt for a certain character can also enjoy reading about the rest of the characters.

- use as many tags as you can. if you look at the tags on my post, i use a monstrous amount.

- quality >>>>>>> quantity ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS. even a 100 word drabble can be more beautiful or impactful than a 1000 word fic if it’s worded better, has a better concept, has better character writing, and has better interactions.

- there are many tropes that work well with certain characters. for example, i always write kaiser with the childhood best friends trope, because not only does it match his character, but it also makes the best quality content. another example is karasu with academic rivals for obvious reasons, although im pretty sure we all already know that.

bonus facts!!!:

- i tend to have a hard time writing sae. he’s a difficult character to understand, which makes him all the more appealing to me but also just as annoying to write. because we have no idea what happened to him when he was in spain, he’s hard to write without being ooc or weird. before kaiser’s backstory, i also had a hard time writing for kaiser. (im an infp 4w5, if that helps)

- the only blue lock boys i can confidently say are green flags are barou, kunigami (pre-wildcard), yukimiya, and karasu. many of the others (isagi, reo, bachira, etc) are extremely close to being green flags but all have questionably toxic things that make them yellow flags.

- i wanna write for shidou so bad, but because the fandom mischaracterizes his so much, it’s hard to write for him validly without getting criticized. for example, shidou is NOT going to beat you up for no reason or be disturbing towards you for no reason. if you don’t play soccer or if you’re not particularly special, then he’s honestly just really chill. think of him like hisoka from hxh but less of a pdf file.

Hiii! Lucky (debatable) for you it takes very little prompting for me to blather on about whatever brainworms I have at any given time—

Atomic Blonde/The Coldest City being a spy movie and graphic novel respectively is already a vibe for a garashir au on a surface level, but specifically the titular couple in the movie version is what makes me think it would suit them so well…

See: Hardened field agent (who may or may not be a double or even triple agent) goes to Berlin to find a list of active spies (which would potentially reveal said double agent thing if it fell into the hands of the wrong intelligence agency) and also check on another agent who went a little rogue and and to collect the body of yet another agent who was KIA, is followed by (another) Sweet, Naive— but far smarter than initially given credit—brand new agent from an allied agency, who got into this with idealistic notions in mind, but the two end up having a sexual relationship and working together to uncover what nonsense is afoot, and hardened agent even finds herself being emotionally vulnerable for the first time in forever with naive agent, even going so far as to admit that she’s terrified that she’s doing that because it will very likely get her killed, and… I think this demonstrates my overarching vision, right?

More specifically, there are just scenes with excessive touching and flirtatious (but with secret meaning) dialogue that I think would suit them too—ie; kissing in the back of a club because you know the other one is armed and undercover and you want to get close and disarm them and figure out who they are, etc.

There is major character death in the movie and novel but I am a lover of nobody dies fix-it shit, so I would probably not partake in that part of things, but maybe a fake out? Idk

(If you’re interested in skimming the movie script for examples and details of what all I’m referring to — here. I always like doing that when I’m brain rotting in addition to watching a movie that’s got me inspired about au ideas, so help yourself)

Anyway, the point being is the movie is soooo fun and the couple is Hot, hence my wish to simply See some of the scenes that would fit so well just drawn as garashir, but I do also think the whole thing could work great as fic! I just am not finished with a certain other fic wip from something else I have ongoing atm, and also feel a little like I’d need a sounding board for how to handle some of the immediate difficulties with making this au work. Which are, primarily—1. I’m not interested in making Garak not an alien, which kind of eliminates the possibility of using the movies original setting of 1980s Berlin, and so then where? when? initial thoughts are maybe the Cardassian / Federation DMZ, but idk if that necessarily works or makes sense in the same way (though? Maybe? two different undercover ops trying to find Maquis agents bumping into one another there or something? Idk) and 2. Needing this to also be a sort of alternate timeline to work, since it would be Not Exiled Garak and like baby adult Julian choosing to be an intelligence agent instead of a doctor, because he felt like Called To or something ???

one of my longest standing fanfiction dreams is to write a dimension travel fic. i am so, so obsessed with the trope and i just need. a battle hardened harry being dropped into another universe where his parents and godfather are alive, and he’s stumbling around trying to manage his trauma and keep them at arms length but none of them will let him because it doesn’t matter if he’s from another world, he’s still their baby, they can feel him in their magic and they’ll be damned if they let him feel unloved in any capacity.

Idk, it's just weird to me to be discouraging towards people making fandom content just because it's not the specific content you want to see, like, it's ok to want to see other content, but complaining about how other people aren't catering to your tastes enough instead of just making the content you want to see yourself is kinda bad vibes, y'know?? I'm gonna be so real with you. My entire exposure before playing DBH was Reed900 fics and the Decharts streaming on twitch (where i heard "28 stab wounds!").

So I'd read lots of fics and that's why I love Chris so much honestly. He's such a good guy! I love straight wingman Chris to his volatile friend who has a crush on an android but was in denial. But yeah my main experience was people putting a guy with minimal (angry) screen time and a guy with no spoken lines in romantic settings.

I love platonic relations though... so that's been the more prominent feature in my art as I adjust and learn how to draw the cast!

I also have a lot of ideas for Gavin and other DPD crew/Nines interacting. I just haven't had energy sadly! They're written down for later!

And fun fact: I've been told it's basically my brand to have mutual pining as a defining relationship trait. Guess what I like about Reed900. It's the fact a lot of fics are catering to me and mutual pining. They've catered to me since before I played the game.
