Something I think about a lot with Maruki's perfect reality thing in terms of Akechi is how like, defanged he is for lack of a better term. I know Maruki's actual reasoning for things like that is just that his perfect reality removes a lot of the trauma from people, so they would inherently act differently, but to me it ends up just pushing the idea of "you can't be happy the way that you are"
It's reflected in a lot of the characters honestly, since a lot of their trauma didn't happen or is covered up by the reality none of them are themselves. Aspects of their personality caused by the hardships they faced no longer exist
Sumire is also a big example of this. I could talk a lot about Sumire but in relation to this topic, again her perfect reality being one where she is not herself (literally) and doesn't have any of the past trauma or experiences that made her who Sumire is just pushes that idea even more, not even getting into how it also reinforces her own negative ideas about herself by Maruki doing that
In the perfect reality, Akechi and Sumire are both different people than who they actually are, so it's really not a reality in which they are happy, is it? "You're too broken of a person to ever be happy while being who you are" is the message that gets sent across to me, whether or not Maruki intended that
Sumire is Kasumi now, a happy and determined person who isn't bitter and angry and overwhelmed with grief about the death of her sister, a person who doesn't hate herself and a person who doesn't have those experiences. Someone who now never has the chance to explore who she really is and grow and face her struggles head on, someone who will never get to learn that she is worth more than she grew up believing, replaced by the sister who she always felt was better then her
Akechi is now a cheerful and kind person, a reflection of his Detective Prince act, who is no longer resentful and lonely, no longer traumatized from all the actions he had to take throughout his life and someone who could've found happiness if he just had more time. Someone who had people who accepted the parts of him that would make most view him as unworthy of affection, the less palatable person who longed for someone to want him, as he is, replaced by a version of him that's seen as easier to love
#im just rambling. i have thoughts#third semester is so. much. there's so much there#its such a complicated and compelling storyline#persona 5#persona 5 royal#persona 5 spoilers#persona 5 royal spoilers#goro akechi#sumire yoshizawa#takuto maruki

I think it's so impressive that so many people manage to make sense of the strange writing choices from the last episode and turn it into fics that work, but my brain is still so stuck on the whole Abby thing.
Can I accept that Buck apparently didn't really process or research his sexuality at all over the course of six months? Maybe, though it feels slightly ooc
Can I accept that Tommy is apparently so hurt and traumatized that he'd rather run than listen to Buck? Maybe, though after six months and consistantly showing him to be very attentive and an open communicator, it also feels a bit ooc
But then the Abby thing? Which doesn't make sense for so many reasons? And the fact that they never talked about exes or their past or their identity after six months?
It's just a lot to swallow over the course of two super short scenes without any kind of build up 😭
#bucktommy#and i know that they didn't have a lot scenes beforehand#but what they did show us especially in 8x05 felt so different 😭#and from a bts perspective it was such a compelling relationship with so many opportunities for storylines#i think i'm still processing everything#but their choices are so strange 🤷♂️#i am trying to come up with any kind of scenario of where they want buck to end up that doesn't involve a relationship like this#and none of them work as well as this one

bbc: Some sweet #Silvacre content for your FYP ❤️
#silvacre#suranne jones#rose leslie#vigil#the bbc making a silvacre fan edit was a pleasant surprise :)#i saw the streaming numbers for vigil 2 were very good (understatement)#which makes an s3 at least a possibility#if they can write a story suranne and rose would sign on for#i'm counting on what suranne said that the continuation of the love story is a big part of what brought her back#the series does a good job creating dramatic tension and conflict within a happy relationship that doesn't involve cheating or one dying#if they do a 3rd season i hope that continues#i mean the series started with amy in the worst possible place emotionally and psychologically so surely they wouldn't go there again#s2 with its wlw mlm solidarity/parallel storyline and giving us more insight into amy and how far she's come since s1#on top of all the other things i liked this season (which i enjoyed quite a bit in addition to the ship)#at heart it's very critical of the british government and military/war machine and some reviews seem to have missed that part#anyway i'm pleased as punch that a prestige bbc drama has two women in love at its center and a lead as compelling as amy#and that it's pulling in the numbers even without the submarine and claustrophobia (admittedly a cool premise)#keep making the fanvids bbc social media team we appreciate you#queue

Honestly, when Mel gets her storyline in Noxus, I would love that intrigue of her back to the forefront that the showrunners decided to suddenly drop out of the blue halfway S2. She's going to need it there. Like Noxus is a place of magic, and don't get me wrong, I do like her as a mage and how she is connected to the Arcane. But she just got into her powers (albeit quick as hell or my girl is just a natural talent, lmao), and I don't think that alone will be enough when she's going to hopefully be involved with more seasoned mages / magic users.
Like we got to know that all of Ambessa's assets were taken by the BR, so does that mean Mel is using all her resources and money for her clan? Is she going to keep leading the army herself or decide to disban it? Is she really going to take that wolf role out necessity when it's clear she never wanted that but has to? Really hope her goal is clear and she doesn't have to step into Ambessa's footstep (let her break free from it unless we get a compelling reason why she just can't afford to and has to. But I'm pro her breaking away from it).
What about the places her mother and army conquered in her family's name? We getting that? Or just Noxus's influence in general and how large the Medardas play a part in the empire.
Or does Mel have to fall back to that Fox and feel and cope out how that place works to understand its machinations again because she's been exiled for years? Piltover is NOT Noxus, and while it wouldn’t be smart to just lean solely on wolf or fox, I do want her fox side back to deal with whatever is hopefully in store for her next journey
#mel medarda#these writers better deliver#get the right people in that writing room say s1 again because it was so good#a diversity of thought to write a strong and compelling storyline is all i ask#I'm ready for her to be gone and away from the main show and those people tbh#so they'll finally stop using her as a literal mirror and prop to make their points#new chapter for my girl

TROP S2 SPOILERS
Nobody better say anything bad about my girl Earian she is being manipulated through her grief by the men in power around her and it's making it hard for her to discern right from wrong. I'm not saying that her actions are justified, I'm just saying that she misses her brother and dearly needs her dad, but at the moment she is all alone and that can mess a person up
#I tried looking up her name in the tags and I saw nothing???#We are doing my baby dirty#Also why are my favorite characters from this show always the woman grieving her dead brother#whose grief makes them easily susceptible to darkness?#First Galadriel and now Earian#IDK I find both of their storylines compelling#and very similar hmm#I liked Earian from S1 so seeing the hate she is getting makes me sad#It's Galadriel all over again#I guess woman in fantasy are not allowed to grieve or make mistakes#but when they are perfect they are hated on too#anyways the scene where Earian was hugging her dad and sobbing got to me#I never doubted you girly please make good choices please please please#the rings of power#rings of power#blue blathers#trop#rings of power positivity#Earian#trop s2#trop s2 spoilers

i know there’s a lot of delicious angst that people really like romancing Neve as a Rook who saved Treviso, but to me there’s something so chef’s kiss about a non-SD Rook who not only saved Minrathous, but a Rook who let an entire other city get blighted because Neve asked them for help. I love a Rook who is as dangerously devoted to Neve as she is to them, who throws themself into the line of fire as much as she does, who would put Neve’s life over anybody else’s. and the angst that causes as well - when Rook puts Bellara’s life on the line to dissemble the wards because putting Neve at risk simply isn’t an option and Neve is angry, because who is Rook to decide what risks Neve can and can’t take? to value her life more than Bellara’s? and yet Rook couldn’t do anything else, couldn’t bear to even consider losing Neve - Rook promised they’d be by Neve’s side forever, and they’d let half the world be destroyed before they broke that promise
#it’s a combination of protecting the protector + dangerous devotion + codependency that really hits in an angst storyline#I love a complex dynamic like that. because Neve is NOT gonna sit there and let Rook risk everyone else for her#she would hate that! she’s a protector! she saves people!#and yet someone is finally fulfilling their promise to her#someone finally cares enough to care for her. to protect the people and place she loves. to fight for that.#it’s about the conflict and the internal struggle and Rook’s desperate fear of losing her#its unhealthy! and it’s so so compelling as a dynamic#coming out as someone who loves difficult and complex ship dynamics#I love soft adorable awkward friends to lovers and things like that too but god. complex dynamics are so good#veilguard posting

911 fans do understand that someone doesn’t need to be devout to still be Catholic, right? They don’t have to be actively practicing or a staunch practitioner to still be a believer and, crucially, culturally Catholic, something which will influence their lived reality and worldview.
Sure, Eddie Diaz has been far from the most devout Catholic and he has frequently been portrayed as the least likely member of the 118 to believe in the supernatural. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t believe in God or honor the Saints or practice casually. Nor does it make Catholicism any less influential in his life. He might be the type of guy who’s a “Chreaster” (Christmas + Easter Christian; a.k.a. A “submarine Christian), but that doesn’t mean Catholicism is any less influential on his upbringing, lived reality, or worldview. In fact, it has deeply impacted how he views his place in the world as a man and even how he views other people’s place in the world relative to him as a man.
More on this below:
Cultural Catholicism— specifically Mexican Catholicism— is why Eddie hallucinated his former girlfriend as THEE Madonna. But not just any Virgin Mary, she looked to him like Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe del Tepeyac. The Catholic influence on his upbringing has had a large impact on how he views manhood, womanhood, and the relationship between the two. This Catholic influence, combined with the influences of the patriarchy in Mexican culture, like machismo, has led him to view women in the role of carer instead of partner. It’s why he seems to “use” his girlfriends as glorified babysitters. It’s why it seems he’s been looking for a woman to simply “take the place” as Chris’ “new mom,” instead of find someone he enjoys life with. It’s part of why he has a hard time getting it up or keeping it up when he’s in a loving and respectful relationship with a woman. It’s part of why he could only fuck around with Shannon when she wasn’t filling the role of “mother” for Chris, but once he let her back into Chris’ life, she ceased to be his wife and then became “the mother of my son” (see: the beach scene). He keeps falling into the trap of sorting women into either the Madonna archetype or the Whore archetype, yet people aren’t really talking about WHO he views as the Madonna, HOW he views the Madonna, or fucking WHY.
As @/talktonytome mentioned, it is the cultural influences in his life and the absence of his father that have taught him what “being a man” means. He was expected to assume the role of “provider” from a young age. He was forced to grow up fast, literally parentified by his paterfamilias. His own father told him that he had to assume the role of the “man of the family” as a child, and yet would continue to exert an incredible degree of influence and control over Eddie’s life course and decisions, as Eddie, Shannon, and Chris were completely financially dependent on Eddie’s parents (and dependent on them for child care). This dependency fostered an hostile and toxic dynamic. On top of this, he was literally just a kid when he got his girlfriend—who was also just a kid—pregnant. He believed that he and Shannon *had* to make it work for their kid and that they both *had* to “step-up” and “do it right” by getting married, despite literally being teens. There are reasons why babies should never feel pressured to or be forced to have a baby.
Because of his father, Eddie comes to believe that a “real man” devotes his all to his wife and kid, never abandoning them and always providing for them, unlike his own father. Which is why Eddie has spent every waking moment since moving to LA trying to make up for a life choice that he truly believes meant he abandoned his family: joining, and then reenlisting, in the army. “I ran out first. I ran out on both of them. … Instead of going back home, I reenlisted. I told myself it was to pay the bills—” “But you were running away too.” “Yeah…” It was all overwhelming because he wasn’t ready, so he sought an escape. He felt trapped by his circumstances and his family and saw only one “legitimate” route out: joining the army. He was then forced to grow up more by the force-arm of the (equally authoritarian) masculinist state: the United States Military. And this institution would continue to reinforce aspects of machismo that he’d learned through his father. Showing fear, pain, or grief makes you weak. Turn off your instinct to cry, embrace stoicism, and push through with any weapon you’ve got; it’ll award you accommodation.
This is also why he has spent every day since Shannon died punishing himself. He believes he abandoned her. He believes he failed her. He wasn’t able to devote his all to her. He couldn’t provide and he couldn’t make it work. All of this makes him a failed man in his mind. A failed husband and a failed dad and a poor excuse of a man.
Cultural Catholicism was also part of the reason for the familial and societal pressure to marry that he experienced as a teen after getting his girlfriend pregnant. It does, in fact, contribute to the social pressure to be partnered. And not *just* partnered, married. Through the church. There actually *IS* a reason Eddie’s mind immediately jumped to “marriage” when Tía Pepa set him up on a blind date. There is genuine pressure in Latiné families not just to be partnered, but to get married. Tía Pepa ambushed him with a date because it “breaks [her] heart to see [him] alone” and she’s afraid of him being alone forever. And she told him this immediately after bringing up how Alicia is getting married soon, and how Rafael, Fernando, and Liliana are all having kids. She might say “¿Que marriage? Who said anything about marriage?” (immediately after bringing up marriage, mind you) or “Let me introduce you to—” or “You need to get back out there—” now, but it will be “When are you getting married?” and “When are you having kids?” later. Being alone is stigmatized. Not getting married is stigmatized. Having a kid out of wedlock is stigmatized. And the thing is? Your parents and family don’t even have to be devout practitioners themselves to still contribute to this social pressure. Hell, you don’t have to be a devout practitioner to still believe any of it. Like Eddie hasn’t been the most devout and yet the seal of St. Christopher still holds a great deal of meaning to him.
Eddie doesn’t know who he is outside of being a provider. He’s never had the opportunity to discover himself. He went from being a kid to being a husband and father over the course of nine months. He then quickly went from a military career to being a single father in a new city, finally under his own roof at the age of about 28+. He never went on a long meandering road trip across the US and several countries in a quest to “find himself.” He never went to college where he’d experience new friend groups and ideologies. He has been under the thumb of authority or expectation since he was a teen. He’s never been alone.
So, how does he now find himself when he can no longer be what he’s long defined himself by?
#Eddie Diaz#do you see how this is compelling?#do you see how his story can be so so important to Latiné members of the audience who also grew up too fast for similar reasons?#he represents someone— I promise#and he’s compelling on his own#I want to see him get screen time for his own storylines#and more screen time with characters like Chim. Hen. Karen. Bobby. Athena#Buck being his best friend is super cool and great#But Eddie has a story on his own#911 ABC

i truly do think that clara oswald is one of the characters of all time i’m sorry.
#ivy.txt#i mean i’m not. but i am sorry that some people don’t see the vision#like yeah i have a lot of issues with individual scenes/lines that moffat (and other writers gave her)#i’m not the biggest fan of her s7 storyline even if i don’t think it’s the worst they’ve done#but GOD she is just so compelling to me….#i LOVE that the doctor meets her and is like oh my god she is SO clever and fast she can keep up with me!!#and she hungers for adventure this is great!! she’s just like me!!#and then that just gradually morphs into oh god she’s just like me….oh no.#like. the doctor is so used to putting on a false pretense and keeping things from his companions#that when he sees someone wearing the same mask as him it doesn’t even occur to him to check if their face is fake too#i just love that both of them are ultimately so selfish and SO selfless at the same time. the codependency is beautifullllll delicious to me

Ok so the crazy blonde pony tail assassin was actually Killer from Kid’s crew and now I’m once again devo for a side character. My poor guy. And Kid saying he hates his laugh and covered his face up and now all Killer can do is laugh with his face exposed as tears stream down his face.
I’m so goddamn sad. I have to imagine there was some tiny little hint during his confrontation with Zoro when Zoro saved Hiyori and Toko.
#ok but the storyline is very compelling so far#spoilers#manga#anime#one piece#luckycheesefoodie321#wano arc#Wano spoilers#eustass kid#lucky cheese live blogs#live blogging#live blogs

I'm reading Greenwood by Michael Christie and not to microscopically zero in on just the queerness in a book that is breathtakingly well written and gripping but i am not freaking immune to this 1930s blind Canadian lumber tycoon falling in love with his poetic "describer" who's a delightful ass and having a moment of almost maybe intimacy in a Japanese movie theater and immediately apologizing that he's always had this "little hell" inside him and it comes out when he's drunk, and the describer takes his hand and whispers "don't be so hard on it. your little hell" AND I'M LIKE....
#this is just one of many storylines happening and they're all truly so compelling#his brother is currently a train tramp fugitive with a baby he found in a maple tree which is also very good#and he's being pursued by a huge guy with chronic pain and 7 children who's slowly giving into the relief of opium#meanwhile when the story is in the 2030s there's a tree apocalypse happening#this book rules...#m2a
