okay i have nobody to talk about destiel irl with and i am losing my mind so here goes.
dean’s love is absolutely insane. he was betrayed by the only man (angel) he ever let into his life that was not his blood relatives or father figure. he denied it again and again despite usually being the one between him, sam, and bobby to jump to conclusions. then, after all the events of betrayal and lying and godstiel and the leviathans, he keeps cas’ freaking coat. it was practically cas’ only possession on earth- and dean kept it. he moved it from trunk to trunk when the brothers were in hiding. no matter how much anger drove him and flooded his thoughts, he kept the coat.
fast forward to purgatory (skipping events in s7 tbh cause i did not like it, then again who did?) and he searches for cas for a YEAR. an entire year passed and he never wavered with his mission of finding the angel. despite still having such complex feelings about the recent events, he was still determined to find him. he was legitimately haunted by images of cas after he got out.
all in all, we understood clearly throughout the entire series that cas was driven by love for his humans. but to believe dean was merely driven by duty or debt or anger concerning cas is beyond me. he loved that angel so much. for a man who was driven by anger his entire life and it was all he had known, his love for cas triumphed that to a point where that anger still existed, yet he loved. his love became second nature. i will not believe for a second that dean only did all he did because he thought he owed cas for pulling him out of hell and saving him.
both dean and cas were soldiers. both of them abandoned their positions for a love neither of them could have. they are so tragically close to love and yet so far from it. nothing will ever compare to this freaking cw ship.

as a first time supernatural watcher, it is so utterly surreal to witness the angel whom dean has domesticated to the point where he has him doing a cowboy accent from his silly movie. while wearing a silly hat. destiel is real guys.

Dean is all over Cas this episode, wrapping him up in a blanket, hands on shoulders and arms to ground him, cradling his head off the concrete, cradling his face to make sure he's okay, I know caretaker was a role that he was forced into but I also think he genuinely likes being the one to take care of other people, he likes being the pillar that others can lean against for strength, he likes being gentle and kind

Rob: Dean tells Castiel that this doesn't change anything. They are still in a lovers spat. Rich: Dude, and by the way, you keep saying that. You’re not wrong. Like FOR YEARS I have not understood this Destiel thing. Rob: Same. Rich: For years I’m like ‘okay, whatever, I don’t care but I don’t get it.’ Rob: Yes! Rich: Well, season six really is the little peephole in that relationship. They are so a couple! The episode before this and this one, you’re like- Rob: They such a couple. Rich: Like, guys let’s dial it down to 11, good lord. Rob: I know. It’s almost as if writers knew and they were writing for it. Rich: They of course did. Suddenly Dean gets his feelings hurt all the time and Castiel is like ‘can’t we connect?’ and you’re like ‘what?!’ Rob: And Sam is even like ‘you know, Dean is obviously not doing well because, you know-’ Rich: I never realized it was this obvious. Rob: And Dean is all jealous of Crowley. Rich: This season is really- it lays the groundwork for all of that. Rob: I know. I said it a couple of podcasts ago and you made fun of me. Rich: You did, but man, they just keep going. It just leaned in and it just. Wow. Rob: Yeah, point for Robby on that one. Rich: Robby, you’re kind of dialed in when it comes to that kind of thing.

today I am thinking about the way Amara imposes her love onto Dean, saying that it’s inevitable, assuming that his being drawn to her is him taking a romantic interest because why wouldn’t he want her? How could he not? Isn’t it obvious? The way that Amara is associated with giving up, giving in, allowing the world to end and relinquishing hope for a future, and especially being tempted towards “evil.”
I’m thinking about that, and then the way that Dean apologizes to Cas at the end of the season — while they’re on their way to buy drinks, when Dean has totally accepted defeat and is content to merely wait for the world to end — for making him feel so unvalued that he went to Lucifer. and then immediately following it up with, “you’re our brother.” How this, for Dean, is not only a moment of surrender/accepting defeat (to Amara) — but also accepting that Cas will never have romantic feelings for him. This is Dean (who not only relates to Amara, but has also been told by GOD that he is like her, and has ALSO been told repeatedly for years that his desire to have others close to him is selfish) releasing Cas from any obligation to return his affection.
Dean is apologizing for not being focused enough on him to keep him from being seduced by Lucifer, and yet at the same time accepting that he is not deserving of the kind of relationship he wants — saying “this is the closest I’m ever gonna get, and that’s fine.” Dean sees himself as responsible for Cas’s fall from grace by being a temptation, imposing himself on him, assuming that Cas must feel or will eventually feel the same way.
Edit bc I can’t stop thinking about this:
Because despite it being his way of letting Cas go — he’s still doing exactly what Amara does to people when she consumes their souls (she describes it as preserving them, keeping them from being harmed). Dean is keeping Cas stuck in the same emotional in between phase that they’ve been in for years — like purgatory. Treating Cas like both a lover and a family member, and preventing either of them from moving forward in any direction — not closer to each other, but not further away either. And that is exactly what Amara’s version of the apocalypse is — she’s saving God’s creatures from suffering by keeping their souls perfectly preserved inside her. Protecting people from harm by making sure that nothing will ever be done to them ever again.

a thing you should understand about supernatural is one of dean's best narrative parallels is a very angry, fucked up teenage lesbian and one of sam's is the actual devil, like from the bible.

Dean and Cas’s relationship is so insane like they did all of the serious couple milestones and adopted a kid, moved in together, operate fundamentally as a married couple in reverse order and then never actually dated
