An Angel Returns

Matt groaned as his head throbbed, the muffled sound of talking echoing around him. God, what happened? He hasn’t had a hangover like this in years-

Wait a moment, he hadn’t gotten drunk in a long while. Not since he settled down... Red-violet eyes fluttered open, the stinging florescent light burning and making the world washed out and blurred. God he felt cold... Wait, was he just in his boxers? That’s right, he and Sophia had just laid down for bed, so then what happened?

“Ma...Matt?” Eyes snapped open as he looked around frantically. There he was, tied down to a chair, and opposite to him, his dear fiancé in nothing but an oversized shirt, wrists and ankles tired to the chair she was in as well.

“Sophia?!”

“Matt, what’s going on?!”

“Well, well!” The blond’s gaze turned to the greasy looking worm that stared the two down, a wicked grin on his lips. “The main characters finally awaken~”

“You son of a bitch!” Matt growled, glaring at the pathetic excuse for a man. Of course he recognized the slimy bastard; a loose end he couldn’t track down after he toppled the group who killed his fathers. He knew he should have hunted him down more... The man scoffed as he turned, and Matt noticed the video camera.

“Ladies and gentlemen! For years we sat with baited breath as a devil rampaged our world, only for him to suddenly disappear a little over a year ago. We were lead to believe he died, but here he is, in the flesh! A little roach that just won’t die... at least, until today~” Matt’s eyes widened as he struggled against his bindings. Oh god, this wasn’t a trophy video... this was a public execution.

“M-Matt?!”

“Sophia, I’m sorry- Let her go! She’s got nothing to do with this!!”

“Oh, but doesn’t she~?” He sneered as he walked behind her, his hands on her shoulders causing her to flinch. “Quite the pretty ring she’s got, and you as well~ Engaged, are we~?”

“Get your hands off her!” He growled, feeling his blood boil.

“Sophia, is it?” The bastard hummed, before moving in front of her and kneeling down, a hand gripping her face. “Poor, clueless little girl; had he never told you? How he’s one of the most dangerous men of the underworld?” She struggled to pull her chin from the man’s grasp before her eyes widened.

“...he’s what?”

“Wanted by many, be it by governments or others from the shadows who’ve got personal vendettas against him.” He smirked as the woman’s face filled with a mix of disbelief and confusion. Getting up he motioned to the blond. “Go on; ask him yourself~”

“...Matt?” Her broken hearted words shattered Matt, and he bit his tongue for a moment.

“...It’s not like that-”

“Matt-” He flinched. The two of them rarely fought or had major arguments, always managing to talk through their issues... but they didn’t have that luxury this time as he tried to figure out a way out.

“It isn’t. Yes, I did a lot and got a reputation, but that fucker’s old boss destroyed my life as a kid. They killed the only family I had, and I made bad choices back then fueled by revenge. I was going to tell you the truth before we got married, but I didn’t know when or how to tell you...”

“Awe, you’re welcome for giving you the courage then~” Their kidnapper mocked as his gave, going from guilty to infuriated as he spat obscenities'. “What a poetic tale this is, isn’t it?” He asked the camera as Matt struggled more. Dammit, they didn’t spare on the ropes this time-

“...did you lie to me?” Matt looked at the brunette who stared at him. Those hazel eyes that always made him lose his breath whenever they stare at him, as if seeing into his soul.

“Never. I... hid details, but I’ve never lied to you.” Which was true. His wealth was inherited, he had a rough childhood and had future plans that went awry. “Hold on love, we’ll get out of here.”

“Matt...” Her voice sounded almost... apologetic? But he ignored it for now as the idiot continued talking to the camera as he looked around. Including the three of them, there were seven people in the room, the guards sporting guns and armor, though keeping a distance from the infamous blond. Dammit... 

“Matt... it’s alright.” Eyes snapped back at the woman, a apologetic and sorrowful smile on her lips as he felt his blood freeze.

“No, it’s not- I’m sorry, I’m sorry” For the first time in so long, he felt tears stinging his eyes. He finally had the life he had dreamed of, with the most kind and loving woman. He can’t lose it, not like this. Not like this!

“Well, well! Who’d have thought we’d ever see the infamous ‘Angel of Death’ cry?!” The bastard cackled as he fought and struggled. His heard pounding in his ears as he watched in horror as the man walked to his love, this time noticing the gun in his hand. He wasn’t going to-?!

“LEAVE HER OUT OF THIS!” He screamed and begged. “She’s not a part of this, it’s me you want and you’ve got! Let her go! Please, LET HER GO!” He didn’t care about the tears that streamed down his face. Sophia swallowed her nerves, knowing it was time. She managed to offer him an apologetic smile- why?! This was all his fault!

“...I love you, Matthew.” She said softly, just barely heard by him as the gun was raised and his eyes widened.

“No, no no no-! Please no, not her! anyone but you! Sophia I’m sorry-!” He screamed before his voice was caught in his throat as the gunshot echoed in the warehouse. His breath his shaky as he watched her body do limp, blood already mixing and matting with her soft earthy locks, and drip down her temples. Everything seemed to be a thousand miles away as he felt his bindings cut off, and he stumbled out of the chair to the other, hands gently taking her head as he tried to wake her. This wasn’t happening... this couldn’t be happening...

“-even he can be broken! He’s no myth, no legend or reaper, he’s simply human. And for all to witness... he will die like the dog he is.” He felt the barrel against the back of his head, shattered red-violet eyes instead replaced with fury- no, even that paled in comparison to the rage he felt. 

Before the trigger was pulled Matt stood and turned, a hand grabbing the gun as the other broke the bastard’s arm. The next five minutes were chaos; four armed guards unable to shoot without hitting their boss, only to all be put down by the blond with terrifying ease. The man attempted to escape, but another gunshot rang out accompanied by a scream and the sound of something hitting the ground.

Grabbing the knife from one of the bodies, he carefully cut the bindings off of his beloved and picked her up, moving her out of the camera’s view before the sound of dragging was heard, and Matt appeared on the feed again with the bastard now sobbing and begging for mercy. 

“Really? You ignore mine, and expect me to consider mercy?” He sneered at the disgusting waste of space below him, before he turned to grab something. Dragging the chair he was originally seated in he lifted it with ease, letting it hover in the air for a moment that felt to last a lifetime, before slamming it down on the man. Before doing it again. And again. Over and over, repeatedly beating the bastard, not caring as the chair would break piece by piece, before all that was left was a groaning, sobbing mass of flesh, and Matt panting as his arms and torso were covered in splattered blood. 

Panting heavily he finally tossed the last bits of wood away as he left the thing to it’s fate, grumbling as he searched the other bodies for something.

“Fuckin quit for a damn year even...” He could be heard growling before a small ‘aha!’ escaped him and he walked back to the camera, pulling the chair his beloved was in over and sitting on it backwards, letting his arms rest on the back of it as he lit a smoke and took a few long drags.

“...you know, I was perfectly fine ignoring you all.” He said matter-of-factly as he looked the cigarette over. “As I said; I wanted to avenge my fathers, and I did. Was going to let you fucks do whatever you wanted, and not have to worry about me being a threat to you. I think that was a good arrangement, eh?” He questioned the camera before taking another long drag. It’s sad, he loathed the taste, and yet a part of him missed it... stupid addiction.

“But no. Some little slimy bastard felt it was necessary to make a fuckin ordeal, didn’t he? Wanted to look like a god amongst men, isn’t that what he said?” He rolled his eyes as he looked over at Sophia’s body. His heart was ripped from it’s chest as he stared at it; his chance at happiness stolen from him. “So, here’s what’s going to go down. That little piece of shit? Has no fucked everything for all you motherfuckers. Anyone who was associated with him, or the old gang I destroyed? May as well take a bullet to your brain now, cause if I get to you first? I’ll make you wish I had any mercy left.” His gaze was empty, save for the twisted anger that would make the world tremble.

“Congratulations world; you’ve pulled my out of retirement. Matt LeBlanc’s back... and I’m making it all your problem now.” He smirked as he lifted the gin he still had, shooting the camera straight through the lens. Dramatic overkill? Maybe, but he always was one for theatrics. His smirk faded as the camera fell to the ground and he stood and walked over to Sophia, carefully picking her up. She didn’t deserve this. The children she looked after didn’t deserve this...

And angel returned to Heaven... and an angel returned to Hell.

‘Sophia,’ Mathias breathed, and she barely had time to look at him before she was engulfed in a hug. She allowed herself a moment, just a moment, to breathe in the comforting smell of him before she pried herself away.

‘You shouldn’t be here,’ she said, looking up at him and trying to ignore the bruise she could already see blossoming on his cheek bone. A small part of her raged to find whoever had done that to him; but another part quelled it easily.

‘How could I not be?’ he asked, gently cupping her cheek. He was careful not to touch the cut that stung beneath her eye. ‘You could have died.’

‘Na,’ she tried to joke, but the fear in his eyes almost broke her. ‘I thought there was meant to be glory in being a hero. Nobody mentioned it being this painful.’

Matt scoffed; a stray tear rolled down his cheek.

‘Hey,’ she murmured, rising to her tiptoes to wipe the wear away. He bowed his head ever so slightly. ‘I’m all right.’ He nodded, offering her a watery smile that broke her heart. And yet she wouldn’t have changed her actions for the world. She’d done the right thing, and it hadn’t even been a difficult decision.

Superpowers Story Introduction

Determined to step out of the shadow of his mother’s legacy, Mathias joined the police department’s tech support team. He wanted to honour his father’s legal ways of making a living, rather than falling into the trap of his mother’s persistence that joining her would be better for everybody. However, when people with Abilities start causing havoc in the city, and Matt’s best friend needs his assistance in fighting it, Mathias begins to realise that perhaps his option wasn’t actually as easy as he’d first hoped; and a chance meeting makes him question exactly where the lines really are.

Taking over the family business was always part of the plan for Gabe following his uncle’s departure. It was something he’d been training for, but hoped he wouldn’t have to step up into for a long while because he was happy with being the planner of the group. Happy taking orders from his father and continuing to learn from him. But, when the gang return to a city sooner than they could ever have imagined, Gabe is willing to take on the extra responsibility with his father’s support.  Even if not everybody might agree with some of his actions.

The family gang was one of those things that Robbo always assumed he had to be a part of. Sure, he’d been told plenty of times that he didn’t have to stay, that he could go off and be a civilian – even if he only tried it for a few months of sabbatical. Never before had he really had a reason to contemplate leaving it all behind. Until a chance meeting at the local ice rink, and the reminder of just how dangerous it is to be a part of the Laverna gang, make him wonder what life could be. 

Being a teleporting criminal was one of those things Sophia quickly realised would help the family gang in a way she wasn’t going to let slip them by, even if it meant having to hide it in the hopes of not getting negative attention from gangs who might accuse them of belittling the talents they’d all spent years honing. But, when a struggle for power in a city that was once a Laverna stronghold breaks out, Sophia quickly learns that sometimes having an Ability comes with tougher choices than simply not using them.

For as long as she could remember, Ruby had had Abilities. She’d never had any real reason to use them, and for her own safety her family had always suggested that she keep them hidden. However, when everyday people started to find themselves with Abilities, and varying degrees of responsibility with how to use them came to the fore, Ruby quickly realises that sitting idly by isn’t something she can wilfully do. With the help of her best friend, Mathias, Ruby tries to figure out how exactly she can help without putting the people she cares most about into danger.

Moving into the city with his cousin was one of those things Jonny did in the hopes of making life for the young man easier. The promotion offered to him with the transfer didn’t harm matters either. But what he hadn’t expected was to find himself dealing with Abilities, or the sheer number of them in the city. Partnered with a young woman who appears to have a vendetta against them, but cares when hearing about bad things happening to them in the news, Jonny slowly begins to realise that there’s more to the city than he’d initially thought.

Producer Runaway Entertainment is delighted to announce the stellar cast for the critically acclaimed, smash hit, supernatural thriller 2:22 - A Ghost Story opening at Dublin’s 3Olympia Theatre this summer for its debut Irish performances.

Shona McGarty��(Eastenders) will play Jenny, Jay McGuiness (The Wanted, BIG! The Musical, Rip It Up), who is currently on the UK tour in 2:22 - A Ghost Story, will play Ben, Colin O'Donoghue (Once Upon A Time, The Tudors, The Right Stuff, The Gray House) will play Sam with Laura Whitmore (Love Island, Finding Joy, Queenie, and Jenny in 2.22: A Ghost Story in her West End debut) stepping into the role of Lauren.

The very special, standalone Irish production, produced for Dublin’s 3Olympia Theatre, will open on Thursday 20th June 2024 with performances until Sunday 11th August 2024 - for a strictly limited run only.

2:22 - A Ghost Story began in summer 2021 at the Noël Coward Theatre, starring Lily Allen, Julia Chan, Hadley Fraser and Jake Wood, and where it won the WhatsOnStage award for Best Play. It then transferred to the Gielgud Theatre for 10 weeks from 4 December 2021. The production there starring Stephanie Beatriz, James Buckley, Elliot Cowan and Giovanna Fletcher completed its run on 12 February 2022. For the first season at the Criterion (May - September 2022) the cast was Tom Felton, Mandip GIll, Sam Swainsbury and Beatriz Romilly. In late September Laura Whitmore, Matt Willis, Felix Scott and Tamsin Carroll took over. 

The box office record-breaking run at the Lyric starring Cheryl, Jake Wood, Scott Karim, and Louise Ford, concluded its run on 23 April. The West End season at the Apollo Theatre starred Sophia Bush, Frankie Bridge, Ricky Champ, Clifford Samuel and Jaime Winstone, and set off on its UK tour in Autumn 2023 with Joe Absolom, Charlene Boyd, Nathaniel Curtis and Louisa Lytton in the cast. Current cast on the UK tour: Vera Chok (Lauren); Jay McGuiness (Ben); George Rainsford (Sam); Fiona Wade (Jenny).

2:22 is written by award-winning writer Danny Robins, creator of the hit BBC podcast The Battersea Poltergeist, and is directed by Matthew Dunster and Isabel Marr; it’s an adrenaline-filled night where secrets emerge and ghosts may or may not appear…

Upstead fans do realize right that the reason Upstead even exists is because they had Erin do much of the same thing to Jay that he ultimately did to Hailey. Why couldn’t Erin and Jay just stayed together off screen just like fans wanted Upstead to? And if the reasons are just in the realm of “because their soulmates”, than it’s not actually that logical either.

All show stories aside, Jay and Erin couldn't stay together because she left after season 4 while he was staying for the foreseeable future. If Jesse had left soon after Sophia, I would have expected their characters would end up together- but he didn't. No show is going to have a character like Jay tied up in an offscreen relationship for five seasons. Same reason Gabby and Matt didn't stay together in Fire after Monica left. Same reason splitting Jay and Hailey would have made sense if she was staying with the show. It's the splitting of a married couple when they both left so close together (and they knew she was leaving before they split them) that's ridiculous.

Sophia ending the story

Sophia was a 12 year old girl who lived with her father, her mother had passed away some time ago, she knew how to fight very well, she had two friends, Tanya and Benji, her best friends.

Tanya was her sister of consideration and best friend, Sophia liked Benjamin but never admitted it, she hated Matt a lot, she and he never got along, she also admired Zelda a lot,When her mother passed away she was so sad that she joined the Children of the Moon cult, but she didn't expect that something would happen to her. One day it ended up being Benjamin's turn to light up,But she didn't want that so she tried to interrupt but ended up being stopped and killed by Kelbris and being thrown to the ground right in front of her friends, some time later she woke up

When she woke up she realized that she was alone trapped in that castle with no one, she ended up falling to the floor and started crying because she already missed them and blamed herself for what happened,Jadusable, who had the cartridge, could see a crying Zelda with a triforce mark shining in her hand

After losing Slater, Alice Adams, younger sister of Deputy Adams, continued her quest of being turned into a vampire. At an unspecified point in time, she runs into Marty Hammond and has a one night stand with him before he takes off in his truck again. Nine months later, she sticks around long enough to name her daughter Beula Hammond (M/allory B/echtel) and leaves her in the permanent care of Sophia Alpert.

Beula is a human cheerleader and runs in the same group as the late Dana Lilien, Sasha Stoteraux, Jill Freeman and Sophia's granddaughter Jayneela. And after Dana's unfortunate passing, she's gunning to become the new queen bee. Though she had a brief moment with Kaleb in which he fed from her, compelled her to forget and cover up her neck wounds with a scarf, the fact of the matter remains that she is currently still unaware of the world of the supernatural and thinks that the Salvatore Boarding School is just that: a fancy boarding school for fucked up rich kids.

Jill Freeman (Z/aria S/imone) is a human cheerleader, the half-sister of Dennis and the daughter of the late Dianne Freeman, former head of security at Whitmore College and a member of the secret society Augustine. Both of her children were unaware of their mother's involvement with Augustine and they are still unaware to this day.

She'd never say it aloud but Jill feels herself going through the motions and subtly pulling away from Beula and the rest of the group and she doesn't quite know what to do with that or with herself.

Cheryl Ares (M/aia R/eficco) is a human cheerleader, former track star and student at Mystic Falls High. She is also Penelope "Penny" Ares' relative. Penny's death on the 8th of February 2015 fractured the entire Ares family. While most wouldn't fault her for blaming Penny's fiance, Cheryl has never once blamed Matt for Penny's death and tries her best to keep an ear to the ground in regards to what he's up to. After graduation, Cheryl wants to go pro in regards to cheerleading.

Jayneela Alpert (C/handler K/inney) is the very human granddaughter of Sophia Alpert and the younger sister of Tyrone Alpert. A star student, she's not really into the whole popularity contest thing but seeing as Beula lives with her, Jayneela is kind of dragged into the madness anyway. She used to cheer but she quit in favor of doing her own thing. Jayneela wants to become a doctor like her grandmother.

Cecil Barnes (J/ordan G/onzalez) never really fit in with the aforementioned people, despite knowing them all for years now. That's okay, though. He's much more comfortable with the way things are right now: he's branded a nerd and all of the girls (and most of the jocks) are highly allergic to those, so he's left alone more often than not. Dangerously smart and funny when you get to know him, Cecil spends most of his free time avoiding making connections. Well, he spends most of his free time avoiding making connections in real life. Online, he's quite popular. Cecil spends his time in the Mystic Falls High computer lab, gaming and making little stop motion videos. And if he's not at school, you can find him at More Games, the one and only game store in town. And if he's not there, he's at home watching horror movies.

Originally hailing from Finn Creek (near Chance Harbor), Cecil's single father Wade packed up their things and moved them to Mystic Falls after the death of his sister because Finn Creak as well as Chance Harbor held too many memories.

Though he's not aware of the full story, Cecil was close to his aunt Heather and he's clever enough to know that whatever happened to her wasn't just an accident at the Boatyard and one of these days, he's going to figure out what happened. Getting in touch with Zachary Larson is a good place to start.

One of his fondest memories is showing his dad, as well as aunt Heather all of his creations, despite her comatose state, in the hopes of somehow getting her back.

After he came out as trans to his dad (and aunt) - he named himself after her. It's one of the few times he'd seen his dad cry happy tears.

Cecil doesn't know what to think about the Salvatore Boarding School and it's, let's be honest, weird as fuck residents but he does have a noticable crush on Floribeth (who he calls 'Beth' because he needs something to differentiate himself from everybody else) - which she, ironically, has no idea about at all - and holds out the hope that she'll get chosen for one of those Mystic Falls High slash Salvatore School swaps so he can show her around.

(You know, those days during which both groups "walk a mile in each other's shoes". One group of students from Mystic Falls High spends a day at the boarding school and vice versa.)

firstly - I do have a true detective tag! and a rust cohle tag! and a rust x marty tag! and although I don't have a distinct tag for meta & such, I infuse most of my reblogs with an insane amount of unhinged raving in the tags, so, lmao. it's def there if you want it! XD

secondly - there is actually a lot I can't say without you having seen the last episode, in particular the way the show ends. one of the things I love is the fullness of their arc(s) and the way they're changed by the end, for which you gotta see how it wraps up!!!

all that aside though... man. why I love this show is almost too big and amorphous to answer lol, but I'll give it a shot!

I mean... one obvious variable is Rust himself. I am so endlessly compelled by both the tragedy and the potential of him. by thinking about who he used to be - when he had Sophia, when he had Claire. he tells Papania and Gilbough that the job didn't make him that way but that being that way made him right for the job, but was he always that way? was he always a lonely jaded cynic, a product of growing up in the Alaskan wilderness with nothing but his imagination and his synesthesia to keep him occupied? is his nihilism baked into his DNA or was it carefully constructed after a lifetime of being abandoned and disappointed, used and discarded? the thing about him is that he wears that nihilism on the surface, almost like a badge of honor, but there is always this pervasive sense that he is in a state of grief for the things he no longer allows himself - love, desire, softness, comfort, hope. he has made himself into this target for other peoples' pain and bullshit because it slides right off him, so he might as well, right?

like, the whole thing with Crash... that REALLY fucks me up. episode 4 is actually my favorite, and Crash is definitely a huge part of that. he accesses a whole different part of himself to inhabit that person. you can tell that during his time with the Iron Crusaders, he was like... their pet. fed drugs and passed around, used and abused, all for the sake of "the job," but it so clearly was a way to exercise self-punishment, an excuse to remove himself from polite society and just give in to his baser nature. when it came time to put Crash back on, he donned him like a second skin, confident to the point of mania, in a way that breaks my fucking heart. I could go on and on about Crash tbh, it almost warrants its own post lol.

and then there's like, the way he has somehow both no relationship with his body and yet a strict routine for its upkeep. he keeps the engine running (or at least he did, for a while) but he doesn't allow that body so much as the dignity of sleeping with a bedframe. he doesn't use it for pleasure, he barely knows how to control it when he's not using it for his job. and yet, every single thing about his physicality compels me. his slouch. his gait. his little mouth noises. matt mcc I can take or leave, but I think Rust specifically is one of the most beautiful creatures I have ever seen or ever will see.

okay... let me move on to Marty. Marty is fucking fascinating to me. he's a bastard and an asshole and a hypocrite and I think so much about the way insecurity rules his life. he makes all of his choices based on what he thinks he should want, what kind of man he thinks he should be, and he will delude himself to the point of absurdity in order to realize that vision. (it's why, in my headcanon, comphet plays a huge role in his relationship with Rust and with himself, but that's another story.) like, Marty doesn't actually want to be a family man lmao, but, he has to want to be one. where Rust has given up all illusions of being any sort of person at all, Marty has made pointed decisions about what kind of person - what sort of Man - he is, and that's that. so, nothing slides off him, because everything challenges his fragile sense of self. he overcompensates, he's a product of generational toxic masculinity - by all accounts he's a total stereotype. but like... that's what makes his relationship with Rust so goddamn irresistible.

there's just so much going on there, constantly. Marty claims not to want to get to know Rust, but he can't stop digging and prying, and his protests about what he finds are so... performative. he can barely show up for his own family in the most basic of ways but he's constantly bringing Rust food & coffee, voicing concern about the way Rust lives, trusting him, vouching for him - he cares. so much. and because there's no road map of Expectations to dictate that care, he never becomes suffocated by it. and Rust, despite himself, can feel all of that. it is no small thing for Rust, the eternal lone wolf, to have a partner. he most definitely knows Marty thoroughly - knows when he's lying to himself, knows when to call him on it and when not to. for Marty, he makes a space. carves a notch into the solid rock of his soul and reserves it for Marty alone. after their split, he never really recovers. neither of them do. Rust never fixes his taillight, Marty lets everything dissolve once and for all and spends years alone with his microwave dinners, because what's the point? what they felt when they were together, what they had, was incredibly profound and deeply beyond articulation (they're not willing to do it, even if they could.) and it is truly in the finale that you see the veracity of that change, what means to unexpectedly reclaim the thing that changed you.

anyway, this was just sorta a stream of consciousness, not particularly considered and very off the cuff, and therefore barely skims the surface of why I love this show. I'm sure I'm leaving out so, so much. and of course, it doesn't even touch on the baser reasons I love it/them - I love stories about bitter washed-up old men!!! I love the idea of what they could mean to each other! theirs is some of the only fic I've ever cried at or reread. their happiness, their future, is so ridiculously important to me. and I love the music! and the southern gothic vibes! and Rust's scraggly long hair and his insane mustache and how good he looks in that black shirt when he takes Marty to the storage locker!!! I love that from that first episode, the moment Rust showed up at Marty's door plastered and crying, I knew I was done-for. I mean. y'know?!?!?!

Mathias felt sick. Ever since he’d learnt the truth of Sophia’s life, she’d not lied to him about the dangers she faced, about the kinds of people she dealt with on a daily basis. He hated it. Hated that there was nothing he could do to protect her from those things – not that he necessarily thought she needed his protection; it was her world, she’d grown up it in and understood it better than he did. And yet, he’d never really had to face that realisation face. Sophia Laverna was able to keep those two parts of her life separate in a way he was a little jealous of.

Until she couldn’t.

A noise. The vase smashing and he’d been in the living room in an instant. He wasn’t sure what he’d been expecting to see, but Sophia wasn’t it. She was slumped with a trembling arm on the table, cursing in soft French. Her skin was so pale, streaked with blood too vibrant against the grime.

‘Sorry, she had whispered.

Matt had barely managed to catch her before she could hit her head on the coffee table. He had scooped her up easily, cradled her against his chest in a way that might have been romantic in another situation. For once, however, she seemed fragile. She felt just as small as she really was.

‘Have you slept?’

Sophia’s voice made Mathias blink away the fogginess of exhaustion, of yet another rerun of that moment. She was still pale, still looked too small, but he had carefully washed the blood and grime away. Only a few cuts and scrapes littered her face. Still too many, however.

‘Are you OK?’ he asked, unfolding himself stiffly from the desk chair.

‘You haven’t,’ she answered herself, ignoring him entirely. ‘Mathias –’

‘You could have died,’ he breathed, the fear bleeding into the words as he crouched beside the bed.

She carefully carded her fingers through his dark hair. ‘It wasn’t that bad. Teleporting probably wasn’t the best decision, though.’

Mathias felt his eyes fluttering shut, even as he fought to keep them open.

‘Come to bed,’ she whispered, her hand slipping free of his hair.

Matt wanted to argue, to make sure she had some water, some food. But, when he opened his eyes, she pulled the duvet up. An invitation, and an affectionate pleading in her eyes that he didn’t have it in him to fight.

‘You’re OK?’ he asked as he crawled into the bed. A few minutes shut eye, and then he could look after her again.

For once, Sophia was able to rest her forehead against his without either one of them doing too much to make it possible. ‘I will be as soon as you’ve rested,’ she whispered, her breath grazing his lips.

Mathias nodded despite not quite believing her. He allowed his eyes to drop closed, vowing that it would only be a couple of minutes. That as soon as he’d had a few minutes shut eye, he would be back to looking after her rather than it being the other way around.

2023 Movies You Need to Watch (Part One)

The year of 2023. What an interesting year it was for me personally. Honestly, I’m done with this year, so instead of thinking about the memories I’d rather forget, let’s go through the best movies of the year!

Scream 6 (Released March 10th)

Director(s): Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett

Scream 6 is the first movie on my list and first horror movie! With the fifth movie being an excellent addition to the franchise, this sixth installment takes us out of Woodsboro and into the city that never sleeps: New York. This movie clearly benefits from the change of scenery, adding suspense in ways that was unreachable for the franchise until this point, like the subway scene with Mindy (Jasmin Savoy-Brown) or the ladder scene with Anika (Devyn Nekoda). The story follows sisters Sam (Barrera) and Tara (Ortega) as they fight against another Ghostface.

What made this one stand out to me more is the lack of legacy characters this time around. Courtney Cox returns as Gale Weathers, in a very small cameo, while Hayden Panettiere reprises her role as Kirby Reed from Scream 4 in a much more substantial role. Despite those additions, this is Barrera and Ortega’s movie, with their relationship becoming the main thing holding the movie together. The Ghostfaces (Yes, more than one) are kinda mediocre and predictable, but the motives aren’t, which makes up for it. All in all, an awesome suspenseful film that is a perfect end to a franchise, thanks to Barrera, Ortega, and the director leaving. 

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (Released March 31st)

Director(s): Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley

An underrated gem from this year is Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The trailers did this movie an injustice, as it was nothing like they made it out to be. Pine and Rodriguez play a perfect platonic pair of friends as they try to survive in this big fantasy world. The story follows Edgin (Pine) and Holga (Rodriguez) as they travel across the world to save Edgin’s daughter Kira (Chloe Coleman) from Forge (Hugh Grant). Everyone plays their parts to perfection, and it makes you feel like you’re playing as these characters, and it shows that not everything will go as planned.

There are so many funny moments from the Fat Dragon to different ways Edgin gets out of sticky situations. It also helps that both Smith and Lillis play excellent side characters that add to the awkward dynamic that may feel familiar to D&D players. Along with that, there are fun cameos from different actors that I won’t spoil that made me and my friends laugh. I hate that this film didn’t get more love because it truly is a joy to watch it. All in all, this is an amazing movie that deserves more love, and you should give it a watch if you haven’t, you’ll enjoy it!!

Evil Dead Rise (Released April 21st)

Another horror movie that came out this year, and on my birthday, was Evil Dead Rise! This was my first time watching an Evil Dead movie in the theater, and I really enjoyed it, thanks to other patrons in the theater. This movie was brutal, but not as brutal as the 2013 remake. A lot of people were mad about how goofy the movie was, but that’s actually my favorite part! It was like a return to the original Evil Dead, taking it back to its roots. I loved the change in scenery, from a cabin in the middle of the woods to an apartment building on the verge of falling apart.

The cold open was literally the best part, shoving people into the deep end and showing what’s to come. The story follows sisters Beth (Sullivan) and Ellie (Sutherland) as Ellie becomes possessed and begins to attack her sister and three children in their apartment. It was so suspenseful and insanely dramatic, to the point where it was laughable in the best way possible. Although, I’ll admit, the ending kind of lost me a little, I was willing to look past it thanks to the performances of the actors on screen. Overall, I say if you’re a fan of the first three Evil Dead movies starring Bruce Campbell, I highly recommend it. If you’re a fan of only the 2013 remake, I suggest going in with a bit of a warning that it is not as intense as the previous remake. 

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 (Released May 5th)

Director: James Gunn

The end of a beautiful trilogy. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 not only solidifies the fact that this is the best trilogy, but also Gunn’s reputation as the best director in the MCU. From the very beginning, Gunn perfectly captured the tone of the film, and didn’t let me go until the very end. The story revolves around Rocket (Bradley Cooper) suffering a deadly injury, where Peter (Pratt) and the other Guardians travel to save him.

Throughout this movie, I was so anxious that someone was going to die, but to my surprise, Gunn didn’t kill anyone off. I adore this film so much, and while Gunn has left, I will hold this story and the other two in my heart forever. The Little Mermaid (Released May 26th)

Ah, the best Disney remake. Ariel has always been my favorite princess. I wasn’t born when the movie first came out, but coming from Hawai’i, I’m constantly surrounded by water, so how could I not have Ariel as my favorite princess? When I heard that they were remaking it for live action, I was excited. I was even more excited when they casted Bailey in the role.

Although I am not African American myself, I am a POC, and it made me so happy to see representation. I can see the joy in other girls' faces when they see Bailey performing as Ariel, and it brings a tear to my eye. I never had anything like that growing up and seeing them makes me so happy. Spider Man: Across the Spider Verse (Released June 2nd)

The sequel to the highly praised Spider Verse movie has finally been released this year, and it does not disappoint. First off, addressing something in the room, although it is a Part One to another movie, this is a full movie, and it does end on a cliffhanger, but it has an ending! This movie tries to pack so much into its runtime, that I’m surprised it even accomplished being a complete movie! It builds off of everything that happened in ‘Into the Spiderverse’, building off of characters like Gwen and Peter B. Parker, while also making us care about new characters, like Spider Punk and Spider-Man India.

This might be pretty contriversial, but I am not a fan of Spider-Man 2099, he’s too much of an asshole for me to care about him. The only saving grace is that he’s played by Oscar Isaac. Also, Jason Schwartzman as the villain was surprisingly amazing, and his origin story is hilarious. All in all, an excellent sequel that leaves me dying for more!

Elemental (Released June 16th)

Pixar is still releasing bangers, with Elemental being added to the list. First off, the trailers did this movie a HUGE disservice! It sold it as some whimsical world where elements live together in harmony, but it is a retelling of Sohn’s life story told through the eyes of Ember (Lewis). It is emotional, and it hits me in a certain way, thanks to being raised with Asian parents.

Ember and Wade (Athie) are both adorable in their own way, and I believe that people just saw this as a Zootopia rip off and decided not to go. It’s not!! They’re two different stories!! Please go ahead and watch it if you haven’t!! You will not be disappointed. With Pixar movies just being shoved into Disney+, Elemental deserves to be on the big screen.

Oh my god I love this question so much 🥺 thanks so much for sending it!! So, the title ‘magnolia’ is inspired by Laufey’s song Magnolia. Haha. Simple as that. If you’ll give the song a listen, you can hear there:

I interpreted it as something like in the story, even though Matt repeatedly says SHE is the love of his life, it was implied that no matter what he says or do, Sophia will be his number one priority (from now on), she will be his world. She always comes first. This realization hurts her deeply because she understands she's not the only woman in his heart anymore; now, that place belongs to his daughter.

AND she’s not angry or bitter or selfish. She’s hurt.

Sophia has taken his dad’s heart in more ways than one forever. And for Matt’s girlfriend, no one can compete with that. So, yes Sophia doesn’t know much the world turned just for her.
