TL;DR: Yelling into the void about this arrangement & lyrics.

I've been listening to random Zhou Shen performances from the Singer and other live shows for a long time, but I often don't look into the lyrics if they're not already subtitled in the video.

Anyway, I'm finally actually watching full episodes of The Singer, which has subs!!! for the songs!!! (If only I had known..... they don't have them in their individual song videos for some reason ;.;)

Until seeing this and doing some research, I hadn't realized Baby, До свидания was a Chinese song, and that Zhou Shen added lines from a Soviet era Russian song to the beginning of this performance. I just thought he had done a unique arrangement of a Russian song, and someone had written Chinese lyrics for part of it. Silly me.

(In this video he says Pu Shu rewrote a Russian song to make Baby, До свидания, but I'm not sure if that's a mistranslation or he misspoke, as I can't find anythingggg online about the song being based on something else.)

Anyway, now that I know the song lyrics, I'm ..... OBSESSED with this arrangement and how cohesively it all fits together.

To me, the songs together paint a picture of someone who can't confess their love for someone, and who feels they have no home, no roots. They are just wandering, having casual encounters with strangers in lieu of the one they love, doing whatever they can to avoid their feelings. They are suffering in loneliness because they can't speak these feelings out loud.

The last line he sings, in Chinese, mirrors the last line of the first verse of the Russian song (in melody and meaning).

Не могу открыться, слова не найду.

Ne mogu otkryt'sya, slova ne naydu

For I cannot tell him and open my heart (source linked below)

or, I can't open up, I can't find the words (Google Translate)

or, Unspeakable passionate love in my heart (video subs)

...So the song basically ends at the same point it started from. This person still can't say how they really feel, nothing has changed.

I don't know what else to say... if you're a fan of Zhou Shen and you've heard him sing this and never knew what the lyrics were, I hope this is illuminating! And if you've never heard him sing this, or if you've never heard of him period, please check him out!!
