Echoes of Wisdom Headcanon Countdown

༺ Day 100▪︎ 1 Left

Zelda's Lullaby was written (in universe) by none other than Zelda herself - at first, she uses it to help calm Link (and occasionally herself) from nightmares once the war on Demise is over. For eons to follow, across even time and space, this melody becomes synonymous with the princesses of the Hyrule family and is sung to bring peace upon a weary heart. In a way, it is something that has connected Zelda with herself and her loved ones through every lifetime - even between lifetimes. It is the gentle, loving heart of Hylia from so long ago that was not allowed to flourish in a time scorched by battle. No wonder it becomes a symbol of the castle in the Era of the Wild!

I wonder if we'll hear it again soon?

I've always liked to imagine that Sheik was an ancient Sheikah warrior, maybe one who failed to protect the royal family — and pleaded to continue to defend them even after death, all to ease his regrets of falling. So by the time of OoT, the sacred artifact is used by Zelda to transform into Sheik and hide.

Fighter #13 - Peach

For clarification, whenever "the kingdoms" are mentioned, I'm referring to the kingdoms from Super Mario Odyssey.

- She frequently has to clean spores off of her dress from how often Toad is around her.

- Toad releases spores whenever he gets startled, so Wolf and Dark Pit make it their mission to scare him every day just to annoy Peach.

- Gardening helps Peach relieve stress. Whenever she’s feeling overwhelmed, going outside and tending to the plants always makes her feel better. She even has her own vegetable garden in the courtyard. Out of all the veggies she tends to, turnips are her favorite.

- Peach has been on the cover of numerous fashion magazines throughout all of the kingdoms. One of these days, Bayonetta hopes to accompany her on her modeling endeavors.

- Her parasol is reinforced with sturdy toadstool caps to prevent it from blowing backwards or flying out of her hands. Poor Peach went through a lot of trial, error, and lost parasols before finally coming up with this solution.

- Peach is a very skilled dancer. Her amazing balance, flexibility, and endurance shines through whenever she's tearing up the dance floor. She leaps with grace, waltzes with elegance, and breakdances with style. No matter who her audience is, Peach never fails to impress with her spectacular moves.

- Peach's playlist is an amalgamation of upbeat girly pop, spunky punk rap, and hardcore thrash metal.

- Some fighters get extremely annoyed with Peach during matches. Sometimes, her taunts are incredibly infuriating.

- Anyone and everyone is welcome to join her for an afternoon cup of tea. Depending on who it is, she'll also bake them their favorite sweet treat. If Peach doesn't know this information, or they simply don't have a favorite, she'll default to her signature strawberry shortcake.

- Bayonetta always teases Peach about her relationship with Mario. While she constantly insists that she and Mario are just friends, the Umbra Witch refuses to believe it. It doesn’t help that literally all of the DLC fighters thought Peach and Mario were a couple upon arrival.

- Whenever the Mario fighters play tennis or golf, Toad makes it his mission to beat Bowser. He doesn’t care where he is on the leaderboard, as long as he’s above his sworn enemy. It’s his way of getting revenge for his beloved princess, but all his attempts fail miserably, and he only makes himself look like a fool. Even Bowser himself is starting to feel sorry for the guy.

- When it’s that time of the month for Peach, she becomes irritable and bitter, which is a stark contrast to her usual sweet and forgiving personality. Unless she asks for a favor or strikes up a conversation first, all of the fighters know to give her some space until the week passes.

- Peach is always on her guard. Considering how many times she’s been kidnapped, she’s unknowingly become more paranoid over the years (and rightfully so). Like Samus, if something startles or surprises her, her first instinct is to fight, and her hands will curl up into fists. Unlike Samus, however, she’ll take a quick second to evaluate whether or not something is actually a threat before she does anything.

- Peach has incredible strength when it comes to punting things. Whether it be a soccer ball or a Bob-omb that she pulled from the ground by mistake, she’ll kick it far and high enough to make you think that Team Rocket’s blasting off again.

- Peach is like a mother figure to the younger fighters, including the Koopalings. She's sweet and gentle with them, but if they misbehave, they're going to get scolded. And if anyone tries to mess with them, she'll protect them like a lioness would protect her cubs.

- Everyone in the Mushroom Kingdom is a big fan of the Squid Sisters, so Peach will buy tickets from the Inklings and take the Toads to see them in concert. The Toads love Callie, but Marie is Peach’s favorite.

- Peach received her car, Birthday Girl, from the Toads for her sixteenth birthday. It was her first vehicle, and she still has it to this day.

- Peach has been best friends with Daisy since childhood. When they were younger, they used to do everything together. As they grew up, they still kept in touch, but didn’t get to see each other as often due to how busy they were with royal duties. Despite this, they still have a close-knit relationship.

- Every weekend, Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina go out for a girls’ night. They don’t care what they do, just as long as they get to spend time with each other and away from the mansion. Sometimes, Pauline will join them.

- Every so often, Pauline will invite the princesses to galas in New Donk City, which they always accept and attend in style.

- When she first met Pauline, Peach thought she was related to Mario. Something about the red attire, dark hair, and blue eyes made her think they were cousins or something.

- Peach taught Rosalina everything she knows about Earth customs and social interactions. Considering she lived most of her life in space, she was largely unfamiliar with anything or anyone beyond stars, galaxies, and Lumas. In fact, Peach is the only reason Rosalina knows how to play golf.

- She frequently accompanies Isabelle on strolls outside to collect flowers and admire butterflies. Considering how much she loves nature, Peach will often bring her souvenirs from her trips to other kingdoms (mushrooms from the Mushroom Kingdom, plants from the Wooded Kingdom, seashells from the Seaside Kingdom, etc).

- Back home in the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach loves going outside and feeding the doves in the morning. On Smash Mansion grounds, however, there are no doves to be found. So, to keep up with her morning routine, she’ll go outside and just sit out there until a bird of any kind finally flies by. Unfortunately for her, the birds in the Light Realm don’t really care for the birdseed she brings along, so her generosity is often ignored.

- In addition to vegetables, Peach also grows Fire Flowers for battle use.

- Peach’s favorite tea is white tea with plenty of honey, garnished with a white orchid. She finds it pairs well with a lot of the desserts she enjoys making, and the orchid just adds an elegant finishing touch to the beverage.

- If fighters are feeling sick, she’ll make them little care packages with all of their favorite things inside.

- Unlike Toad (or even Mario, at times), Peach forgives Bowser for most of his misdeeds and has actually begun to develop a better relationship with him. The Koopa King really hopes this is a sign of progress.

- Fighters are divided over who they want Peach to end up with. Some, like King Dedede and Meta Knight, think she’s better off with Bowser, while others, like Pyra and Mythra, think that she and Mario would make a better couple.

- Meanwhile, Samus and Jigglypuff stay out of the fray, firm in their belief that the princess should just be left alone.

- During matches, Peach will always cheer on fighters by making small rainbows for them above her head. She's always believed that rainbows were a sign of good luck and triumph through difficult times, so displaying those vibrant, magical colors is her way of showing support.

- She refuses to let Toad eat beans of any kind. If he ingests them, he won't be able to stop farting for hours. His farts are silent but deadly, causing whoever's nearby to face a smelly fate. Once, he even made Sheik faint from how bad the smell was.

- She has the subconscious habit of constantly fixing her bangs. Even if every hair is perfectly in place, she'll still reach up and adjust them out of habit.

- During the warmer months, Peach frequently has problems with Duck Hunt digging up her vegetables. Villager has tried to keep this under control, but he's not very good at it.

- Peach is the head of the party planning committee and oversees all operations pertaining to celebrations. She is a watchful leader and always keeps everyone on task whilst doing her share of the work.

- Her favorite song from the Smash soundtrack is Ground Theme - Super Mario Bros (Melee). It brings her a lot of nostalgia from back in the Melee days, when she first joined Smash.

My personal headcanon regarding Zelda and Sheik.

The two of them are separate people. Zelda dresses like and pretends to be Sheik but Sheik exists separately from Zelda. The two of them both do their best to help protect the people of Hyrule from Ganondorf and to keep an eye on what he is doing.

Sheik was doing that by himself long before Zelda started helping him, but she was in danger of being caught for being Zelda so Impa advised her to pretend to be him and he helped her do so.

The two of them both help and guide Link once he is released from the Scared Realm. Sheik is the one who first speaks to him but he and Zelda both speak with him in the role of the Guide. After Kakariko burns Zelda takes over the role of Sheik almost exclusively since the actual Sheik is badly hurt by Bongo Bongo, the reason Impa had to be the one to follow it.

After Link is sent back Sheik and Zelda are once again separate beings entirely with their own identities and Link eventually learns that they both exist so attempts to befriend them both.

sheik kept her true identity hidden from everyone. even you, her beloved darling, didn't know who she truly was

it always seemed to sheik like telling you who she truly was would only cause trouble, so she vowed to keep it a secret from you, as to not complicate things

yet when you confessed to her, that your heart belonged to someone else – princess zelda, of all people – sheik knew she couldn't keep her identity a secret anymore

she thought things would be easier if she hid a part of herself, only to find out that the part she hid was the one you loved the most about her…

sheik didn't hesitate to reveal who she was to you! after all, she had to stop you from making a huge mistake by leaving her, zelda, for someone else, who happened to be zelda as well

the reveal came as a shock to you, as you had obviously no idea that the two women you loved were the same person!

but you couldn't have been happier to find out that you wouldn't have to pick between the two of them after all…

Zelda’s transmasc alter ego. Nintendo claims that they’re just Zelda in a different outfit, but he’s not that his original intention and incarnation. In the only mainline game he’s in, his body shape is entirely different from Zelda’s, he needs to use magic to transform back into Zelda, and he’s just outright referred to as a man in the game.

Plus, there’s a seven year time skip to when you last see Zelda and when you first meet Sheik- hes had plenty of time to experiment with gender while waiting for Link. Eventually when they’re brought over as a fighter for smash bros Nintendo chickened out and started using she/her for them and their pronouns haven’t been changed since.

Also notably, he’s never been in a mainline game since, which I think is definitely connected to his trans-coding. My personal headcanon is that OoT Zelda is genderfluid and goes by Sheik on masc days! (which is why when submitting I only put he/they in the pronoun section bc she/they is for Zelda :D)

The shrine of resurrection changed a lot about Link. Chiefly though, it affected his body. Fangs, slit pupil, glowing eyes, etc. Gifts from the old ones to make his journey easier. Too bad they’re so unnerving.

I just imagine oot Zelink as married couple and someone goes up to Zelda and is like "I saw your husband kiss a man!" and Zelda is all shocked and calls Link to the scene who of course denies that.

When Zelda asks for details she realizes something.

She had snuck out of the castle as Sheik to spend some freetime with Link.

Someone had seen them.

Zelda was the man Link was supposedly cheating with.

Link had cheated on his wife with... his wife.

And the both still laugh about it years later.

Echoes of Wisdom Headcanon Countdown

Sheik sometimes overcompensates in their attempts to dissuade others from discovering their true identity (Princess Zelda). Although they manage to keep note of every lie they string together in regards to their true self (enough to keep things consistent), some things they came up with when they were younger were... convoluted, at best. Impa was the one to come up with the rather on-the-nose name "Sheik," as it was a popular name for young boys in ancient times of the tribe, and she ended up suggesting they just stick to memories of their time training with Impa. This was slightly reassuring to Sheik, at least, because they were beginning to feel lonesome in the fact they could never share memories of their own again. It was a relief to be able to feel at least a little like their own person again.

LoZ Gender Ideas

Note: These are my headcanons! I just like to take details from the canon and run with them as far as they will take me. Feel free to use these ideas if you want! Also only the OoT Link and Saria one has images because I’m tired. Put some Subway Surfers on if you get bored of all of the text /lh /j

Zelda/Sheik (OoT) - he/him

In Ocarina of Time, Zelda disguises himself as Sheik for seven years. That is a very long time to purposefully disguise yourself as a different gender. I don’t believe he even knew how long it would be until Link woke up. For all he knew, Link might never have come back.

He could’ve disguised himself as a Sheikah woman, but seems to have chosen to be a man.

The manga version is a little iffy, but Zelda seems to agree to Impa’s plan of having his conscience rest to “become that of a Sheikah boy”.

“Now, what about when he reveals himself as Princess Zelda and stays that way for the rest of the game?” You might ask.

I think it might’ve been to quickly relay information to Link.

He revealed himself as Zelda in the Temple of Time right before Link was to go defeat Ganondorf. It would’ve wasted valuable time to explain that he had transitioned from Zelda to Sheik. (Also, he was immediately kidnapped by Ganondorf)

He is also the one who sends Link back to the Child Timeline, so he probably knew that  they wouldn’t stay to get to know this particular version of himself.

Zelda/Sheik (HW) - they/them

In Hyrule Warriors, Zelda seems to disguise themself as Sheik for no apparent reason.

They are constantly referred to as the “Sheikah youth”, no gender being assigned to them.

My headcanon is that Zelda saw a chance to temporarily escape the shackles and expectations of “Princess Zelda”, and that they could truly explore themself for a little while.

Sheik has many lines talking about how they will be playing some sort of music, or even historical uses of music. Zelda’s lines mainly focus on the others around them. So, maybe their dream was to be a historian or bard?

Link (BotW/TotK) - he/they

In Breath of the Wild, Link is very androgynous.

However, I noticed that he doesn’t seem to identify as a woman in any way.

They seem to like traditionally “girly” things (ie. nail polish, being called “pretty”). But, when someone asks him if he’s a woman (Riju wonders about the Hylian Champion being a vai), he seems to become possibly uncomfortable and corrects them. They also seem shocked and scared when someone realizes they are not a vai (the one Hylian in Gerudo Town, the shopkeeper in the secret shop).

He doesn’t even keep the Gerudo Vai set in Tears of the Kingdom.

Fado (OoT/WW) - he/him

In Ocarina of Time, Fado is a Kokiri that seems fairly cryptic during the medicine quest.

In Wind Waker, Fado is the Wind Sage.

Interestingly, even though they share the same name (and in my opinion, look similar) they use different pronouns.

Lots of people (myself included) see this and head canon that they are indeed the same person, but he transitioned to a boy between the events of Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker.

Or, more accurately, fun things I noticed that I have no clue how to interpret, lol

Link (FSA) - idk I avoided assigning pronouns cause I can’t decide

In Four Swords Adventures, Link is able to go into Gerudo Town without any problems whatsoever.

Granted, this seems to be a point in time where the Gerudo are trying to forge relations with the rest of Hyrule, and they could’ve gotten rid of that law. But, that law is in effect in BotW, and I doubt that the Gerudo would get rid of the law only to bring it back later. So, it would make sense that the law is still in effect during Four Swords Adventures.

So, either, the Gerudo assumed that Link was not a boy (possible) OR that Link is not a boy in this incarnation (also possible). I don’t know which of these options I will be using, but feel free to use this as you want to!

Link and Saria (OoT) - they/them?

In Ocarina of Time, the Kokiri all wear very similar clothing.

The girls wear a tunic with a brown belt, brown boots, and a headband. The boys wear a v-neck shirt with shorts, green boots, and a cap.

Interestingly, Saria and Link both don’t follow these rules.

Saria wears shorts, green boots, and a headband. Link wears tunic with a brown belt, browns boots, and a cap.

This seems to suggest that Link and Saria don’t fall into the gender binary. What gender does this make them? IDK, this is just something interesting I noticed.

Link (AoL) - he/she?

In the Adventure of Link, Link is able to transform into a fairy. This fairy form looks identical to any other fairy, including the feminine body figure.

This seems to suggest she’s genderfluid to an extent? Since it’s only when she is a fairy?

He also seems (relatively) fine with becoming the king of Hyrule? (though, I guess that Elizabeth Swann from PotC was a king as well, lol)

IDK. Just an interesting thing I noticed.
