why does 'the shallow sea' make such a big deal about grimm not figuring into this story so don't think about them. it does it three times and it certainly feels incredibly deliberate:
(And Grimm. There have always been Grimm. There will always be Grimm. But those creatures don't figure in this story, so just put them out of your mind, if you can.)
(No, not Grimm. Grimm are not alive in the usual sense, nor does anyone want them. Please do put them out of your mind, if you can.)
(Were you wondering whether there were any Grimm on the island in those days? As I've told you, Grimm do not figure into this story, and I wish you would clear them from your mind.)
like, there are plenty of others stories in the book that don't feature grimm, but only 'the shallow sea' keeps mentioning over and over again. it's the constant "i bet you were thinking about grimm when the story never actually mentions them besides these parentheses parts which causes you to actually think about them but really, you shouldn't, so why are you after i put them into your mind?" that's mind boggling to me.

Half baked crack theory that I don't particularly believe but think is an interesting concept anyways:
Oz accidentally made the faunus between the time Light gave him his curse and reincarnating.
To explain it, essentially, Light explicitly states that "your kind will come back" when talking to Ozma. Not only this, but there's an established time between dying and reincarnating (him immediately reincarnating in Oscar is implied to be unusual iirc). I doubt he'd remember this in between state either, if anything even happens in this state.
Also, both of the faunus creation myths feel kinda Oz-ish. The shallow sea places an emphasis on individuality and being yourself (something Oz deems is important multiple times), and the judgement of faunus has an emphasis on unity. The animal god himself sounds and feels a lot like Ozpin.
So like, maybe Ozma's soul wandered Remnant for a while as humanity was evolving and somehow he created the faunus (whether accidentally or on purpose somehow).
Who knows lol, I'm throwing this idea out there. I don't really believe it, but it has some weird amount of ground to stand on.
A possible explanation for the faunus creation myths feeling Oz-like is that he could've helped shape their cultures (if he can reincarnate into faunus, which I can't see why he wouldn't).

Happy birthday, @fanaticsnail 💙
Happy birthday, my dearest Snail. How glad I am to be able to call you my friend and do this for you. I am glad for all the times I managed to get to know you better through our messages. And I am glad for being able to wish you a happy birthday and gift you this Cora pic I drew just for you. I drew it quite a while ago always with the intention of gifting it to you, but when I found out when your birthday is, I decided to make it a little bit more special. I love you, Snail, and I'm happy to have you in my life. With all that said, once more, happy birthday, and I hope you have lots of fun. Enjoy your Rosi like this, peaceful.

Worldbuilding challenges I did expect: History and political environment.
Worldbuilding challenges I did not expect: I, a soil & geology student, accidentally getting side-tracked and fixating on developing the area's climate, geological buildup, geological history and development, current geological phenomena, geological relations to land use, land use in economical and trading context, influences of climate on said land use, I could go on.

What‘s up with yotici? Are they still around
Yeah they're still canon. Last I mentioned them was briefly in the Imperial Wardi food post because their larval young are often caught as bycatch and eaten. They might come up again when I expand more on the Jazaiti people because the shallow sea on the west side of the peninsula is where this particular region's largest yotici pod is based out of.
By and large, the majority of landdwelling peoples do not communicate with yotici or even recognize them as sapient, and they tend to be categorized as fairly intelligent and very hostile sea beasts. The peoples who have established mutual lines of communication tend to be smaller, localized populations who depend on shallow seas for their subsistence, and don't tend to have mass influence (in a game of cultural telephone, "We have established treaties with the people of the sea grasslands to graze our wammi in peace in return for protection of their gardens and gifts of trade" becomes like "THE YANTI OF THE LOWLANDS SAY THAT THE GREAT BEAKED SEA-BEASTS SPIRITUALLY COMMUNE WITH THEM, AND THAT THEY MUST FEED THE BEASTS OFFERINGS OR ELSE THEY WILL DEVOUR THEIR SEA-CATTLE. WHAT FASCINATING HEATHENRY")
Yotici are not often involved in the affairs of land people beyond sometimes being hunted with harpoons, or drowning sailors/fishermen for hunting them with harpoons/threatening their gardens/just pissing them off. They're sometimes hunted by subsistence fishing communities (and their larvae are frequently caught in nets) so most established relations tend to be hostile (with no lines of communication or full comprehension that both parties involved are People).
Most yotici cultures have such fundamentally different modes of living and communication from landdwelling peoples that many yotici don't fully recognize them as People either (also thinking of them as mere beasts, if very intelligent ones- they can even use tools!), which reduces the frequency of even attempting to establish communications. Most yotici are just kind of out there doing their own thing.

man. now I'm thinkin abt like. deep sea animals seeing the sun for the first time.. is it beautiful? is it warm and comforting? or is it terrible. is it burning and hatred and blindness. hell is real and it's above them. it's rays through clear blue water, it's dry and dessicating and it means they're visible to predators and prey alike. will they starve first or be eaten? there's no camouflage up there. there's more than just red light. maybe they'll be abducted by those shadows that offer momentary relief from the blinding light. do you think they tell ghost stories about the ones who went up and never came back down? maybe it is beautiful
