i watched conclave and now I really want to know more about all the drama with cardinals, how do you find out about that kind of stuff?
Ohhhh boy. Where to even begin?
Well, to start with, a lot of the cardinals in Conclave are based on real people! Bellini is obviously Carlo Maria Martini (right down to having a surname that's a mixed drink), especially in the book, where he's apparently Italian rather than Italian-American (I love that, unlike with Lawrence, who's also Italian in the book,* they didn't change his name; Stanley Tucci is eminently capable of playing an ItAm guy named Aldo Bellini <3). Martini was a "liberal" Archbishop of Milan who for much of the 90s was widely expected to succeed Pope John Paul II but ended up stalling out at the 2005 conclave.** Tedesco has a lot in common with Raymond Burke, an archconservative cardinal who's still alive and very vocal in the media, although Burke, conversely, is American rather than Italian. (America unfortunately has a very conservative local Catholic Church in general these days.) Tedesco and Burke even look similar, right down to the campy, "muffled sounds of 'Good Luck, Babe!' playing in the distance" fashion sense and body language. Tremblay has a similar career trajectory to Marc Ouellet, who, like Tremblay, was widely respected and seen as pretty middle-of-the-road until serious scandals started coming out. Adeyemi doesn't seem to be based on or inspired by any one real person, but the virulent homophobe who isn't that reactionary otherwise is a very common type of sub-Saharan African cardinal, perhaps most prominently represented currently by Fridolin Ambongo Besungu. Like with Adeyemi, I can see Ambongo picking up steam but then imploding over the course of the next IRL conclave, although it would be uncharitable to Ambongo to assume it would be for the same reasons. And so on.
(Benitez is an ideal, rather than someone inspired by a real person or ideological type, but there are cardinals who've had similarly high-stress and altruistic career and life trajectories, like Marco Zenari, Pierbattista Pizzaballa (which is seriously his name),*** and, in fairness to him, also Ambongo, who is Congolese and is regularly physically threatened by political and paramilitary forces within the DRC.)
As to how one learns more about this, you could start by setting news alerts for some of these people's names--Matteo Zuppi, Luis Antonio Tagle, Pietro Parolin, Peter Erdo, and Victor Manuel Fernandez are other names to potentially watch--or reading some books that have been written recently about the current politics of the Church, the Curia, and the Francis papacy. There's one called In the Closet of the Vatican that is incredibly scurrilous, as its title would suggest, but a rip-roaring read if you're not too concerned about forming possibly-unfair negative opinions of some of these guys. There are also writers like Austen Ivereigh and (gag) Edward Pentin who've made whole careers of being Vatican Inside Baseball Understanders, especially since Pope Francis was elected in 2013.****
In general I'd say Conclave is a very good representation of the way these people think and act, especially the constant tension between venal ambition and genuine belief that they are participating in a divine agency in the world. The tendency in non-Catholic and even some Catholic circles is to assume that only the former is present, but people are complicated.
I hope some of this helps, anon!
*I looked it up and in the book he's called Jacopo Lomeli. I've never seen this surname before, but apparently some real people do have it.
**The Catholic Church has its own ideological spectrum and there are ways in which liberal, progressive, conservative, etc. are not very useful terms, but for broad purposes they work here.
***Patriarch of Jerusalem, the only Palestinian cardinal (cardinals are counted as "from" the countries that they lived in when they became cardinals, not necessarily the countries they're from originally; in his case his country of origin is, unsurprisingly, Italy). As you might imagine, he's been in religious news a lot lately.
****Francis, or Jorge Mario Bergoglio as he was then, is widely believed to have been the runner-up at the above-mentioned 2005 conclave, which produced Pope Benedict XVI.

The Lower Empire
« Atlas historique Larousse » sous la direction de Georges Duby, édition revue et corrigée, 1987
by cartesdhistoire
In the 3rd and 4th centuries, the Empire faced a triple threat: to the north, the Germans, numerous, unstable, and warlike, pressed on its borders; to the east, the Sassanid Persians, victorious over the Arsacid Parthians, constituted the only organized state opposing Rome; in the south, the Saharan nomads posed the least dangerous threat. The crisis reached its peak from 256 to 269, when these enemies coordinated their attacks. However, from Claudius II (268–270) to Diocletian (284–305), the Illyrian Emperors managed to stabilize the situation, despite significant challenges (such as the Alamanni and Franks invading Gaul in 275). At times, they negotiated deals, notably with the Sassanids. In 332, the Goths from the lower Danube, defeated, agreed to an unequal alliance treaty with Constantine. In exchange for subsidies and the right to trade with Rome, they pledged to provide troops to the Emperor upon request. They remained loyal to the Constantinian dynasty thereafter, supporting Constantius II against Magnentius in 351-353 and backing the attempted usurpation of Procopius against Valens in 365.
Constantine organized the first universal council in 325 at Nicaea, bringing together bishops to achieve theological unity within Christianity. Some external bishops (Persians and Goths) attended, and Constantine, as Roman Emperor, presented himself as the natural protector of Christians worldwide.
Constantine's establishment of Constantinople as the second capital shifted the empire's center of gravity (331). Constantine's three sons succeeded him, and after several episodes of civil wars, Constantius II (337-361) emerged victorious from the conflicts. He imbued power with a hieratic, sacred, and Christian character.
However, stabilization primarily came from the reorganization of the army (stationing fixed units at the borders and maintaining a mobile reserve at the rear), leading to victories over Persians, Goths, and Franks, ensuring half a century of tranquility. This peace was reinforced thanks to the resolute character of Valentinian I (364–375).

Guide to my Rewrites (and other content)
I post a lot of things, and some of those things are rewrites. As such, I thought this would be a nice guide for fans of my rewrites in particular. I'm still adding new things! Lemme know what you think.
Alternate Takes (Disney)
These are projects that have the same characters and settings (for the most part), but different plot points. These particular alternate takes suggest ideas that would've made me enjoy the movie more (or at all) and aren't a fanfic so much as bullet points with pictures.
Aida
Pocahontas
Hercules
The Princess and the Frog
Tangled
Frozen
Big Hero 6
Moana
Frozen 2
Raya and the Last Dragon
Encanto
Strange World
Wish (Note: working on a full-length rewrite unrelated to the ideas used here)
I also did rewrites for two Dreamworks movies:
The Road to El Dorado
Sinbad
Reimagining Disney Movies
These are projects that take Disney's framework (ie a fairy tale) and create my own characters, plot, setting, and song titles for it.
The Snow Queen
Kingdom of the Sun
Rapunzel
Reimagining Disney eras
These posts are designed based on what if Disney eras made different decisions (either based on my own ideas or rejected concepts) for their films. Note: I made the revival post before the renaissance and post-renaissance posts, so they kind of flow in different continuities. I also wanted to include future ideas for Disney's next era. These posts also work independent of my "Alternate Take" posts.
Reimagining the Renaissance
Reimagining the Post-renaissance
Reimagining the Revival era
Plotting out the Resurgence era
Marvel
Not quite as detailed as my other rewrites, but I thought I'd include them.
Dr. Strange: Multiverse of Madness
Thor: Love and Thunder
X-Men (Because they have more content than my other Marvel things)
This pretty much just includes my rewrites.
X-Men: Evolution--New roster, Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, Roster (Timeskip), Season 4, and Season 5 (I did a poll months ago, and maybe I'll do a post brainstorming a Marauders spinoff).
Wolverine & the X-Men--New Roster, Season 1
Fox's X-Men films (I may remake this)--Part I (First 3 films) and Part II (Phoenix, NM, and Dark Phoenix)
Extensive rewrites
TV shows that I've remade episode-for--episode, perhaps removing and adding some as I see fit.
Miraculous Ladybug--Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, Season 4 (currently working on Season 5; been dragging my feet with that!)
Anime as comic books
Yes, this is a topic. I remember when I was in this headspace, and it was really fun. I basically reimagined what if popular anime had been created as superhero comic books that golden or silver age.
Dragon Ball
Naruto
Anime rewrites
Black Butler
Naruto: Part I (Part II is not cancelled; I just put it on the backburner)
High Card: Season 1 (Season 2 is not cancelled; I just put it on the backburner)
Video Game Rewrites
These aren't quite as detailed as my usual rewrites.
Bayonetta
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Fire Emblem: Fates
Fire Emblem: 3 Houses
Kingdom Hearts
Hogwarts Mystery (MAYBE; ongoing internal discussion)
My OCs
This section covers my original characters for a few fandoms. Thinking of making OCs for books/anime/comics, but I do not have the confidence that I know the universe(s) well enough.
Fictif
The Arcana
Hogwarts Legacy
Baldur's Gate 3
Mood Boards
Just something I've made for fun to inspire others! Not an expert on making them, but it was still something I wanted to do.
My Wish rewrite (temporary)
Disney's Swan Lake
Disney's Hansel & Gretel
Disney's Rumpelstiltskin
Disney's Red Riding Hood
Sub-Saharan Disney musical
Disney Superhero Film
Japanese Disney musical
Actors who could play Disney villains
Choices: Stories You Play
REALLY into this game for a period--but it started to get awful when "Witness" came into play. Here's a list of reviews (which I've stopped doing) as well as concepts for new books (originally on Reddit before I got banned).
"Before I Say I Do"
"Celebrity Status"
"Summoned to Court"
"Arkikara"
"Fairy Godparent"
"Hierarchy: Scheming University"
"Willow Falls"
"Late at Night"
"Spellcaster"
"Four"
"America's Most Eligible" (Review)
"Desire & Decorum" (Review)
"High School Story" (Review)
"Rules of Engagement" (Review)
"The Freshman" (Review)
"Queen B" (Review)

Rewriting the Winx
Rewriting the Specialists
Rewriting the Villains

Plotting out Gen 4
Comic Book Content
Remaking Major X

National Cheese Day
June 4 is National Cheese Day. Not to be confused with other popular cheese related holidays like grilled cheese day, cheesecake day, or mac and cheese day. This day is in reverence of the queen of all dairy, the big cheese.
When is National Cheese Day 2024?
Cheese and its many varieties are celebrated on National Cheese Day on June 4.
History of National Cheese Day
Cheese making is an ancient, some might even say sacred, craft. So ancient in fact it predates recorded history. It is speculated that the magic of cheese making began somewhere around 8000BCE shortly after the domestication of animals. Archeological digs have found evidence of cheese around the world including strainers coated in milk-fat molecules in Kuyavia, Poland dated around 5500BCE, murals in Egypt dated at 2000BCE, and an artifact of preserved cheese in Xinjiang, China believed to be more than 3,000 years old! European Imperialism took their styles of cheese through Asia, sub saharan Africa, and eventually to the Americas.
The most popular cheese of all is (obviously) mozzarella. This delicious and pizza topping cheese was first created near Naples from the rich milk of water buffalos. At the time, it rarely left its home near Naples, as it was made from pasteurized milk, and a lack of refrigeration meant it had a very short shelf life. As both cheese technology and refrigeration systems advanced, this delicious cheese left the southern region of Italy and found itself traveling around the world.
There are two types of mozzarella produced within the United States — low moisture and high moisture. Low moisture mozzarella has a moisture content less than 50% while high moisture has a content of over 52%. Low moisture is made specifically for transportation and mass production as the lack of moisture gives it a longer shelf life.
Today, cheese dishes can be found on every continent served savory, sweet, melted, deep fried, and even chilled in ice cream. This household staple can still satisfy any craving after thousands of years.
National Cheese Day timeline
1815 Industrial Revolution
First large scale industrial cheese production begins in Switzerland.
1851 Mass production
Jesse Williams, a farmer, is credited with being the first to have an assembly-line of cheese production in Rome, New York.
1939-1945 Goodbye Mom and Pop
Factory made cheese surpasses the production numbers of traditional farm raised cheeses during World War II.
1982 Mama Mia
The Mozzarella Company was founded in Dallas to bring fresh Mozzarella to America.
By The Numbers
4% – the percentage of all cheese being sold that ends up stolen. 1,400 pounds – the weight of a block of cheddar cheese delivered to the White House once by President Andrew Jackson. 2 – the hours it took for 10,000 visitors to the White House to finish the block of cheddar cheese. 17th century – the period in which they started dyeing cheese orange to fool people into thinking it was higher quality. ½ – of the total cheese consumption in the world is of Gouda cheese. 1,000 – the estimated number of different French cheeses. 1615 B.C. – the year when the oldest known cheese was discovered in China.

5 FACTS ABOUT CHEESE THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND
It’s vegan!
Americans cut the cheese
Don’t forget the stomach
Medieval curds
Cheesy Moon
Okay, not really, but dairy free cheese is definitely having a renaissance. Food experimentation has come a long way in recent decades offering up many plant based cheese alternatives you can find at major grocery retailers or your local vegan butcher shop (if you’re lucky enough to have one).
Contrary to popular assumption the U.S., not Europe, is the biggest producer of cheese, making up 29% of the global market. In order the top producing countries are the United States, Germany, France, and Italy.
Rennet is curdled milk and complex enzymes found in the fourth stomach of unweaned calves and is often added in the cheese making process, as it is considered to make a bolder, richer quality product.
The most popular types of cheeses of today like gouda, cheddar, parmesan, and camembert, all came in vogue during or after the Middle Ages.
The long standing myth that the moon is made out of cheese may stem from “The Proverbs of John Heywood” back in 1546 which stated "the moon is made of a green cheese." We now understand this to be more metaphor than literal, with “green” referring to the freshness or un-aged nature of the moon.
Why We Love National Cheese Day
Expanding our Palate
New cultural experiences
Sharing and bonding
We love taking our taste buds on new adventures! Today can be about trying so much more than cheese. Wine, beer, meats, veggies, deserts… all of it is up for grabs and we can’t wait.
As an international food staple, National Cheese Day opens the door to a variety of new cultural experiences. We love being able to explore new dishes, cultures, and traditions.
We love breaking cheesy bread and making new memories with the ones we love.

Marked similarities and distinct differences between Eric and Red. Their hero complexes.
Like father, like son. Eric wants to be a superhero and save the world to the best of his ability, like Spiderman or Luke Skywalker. Red is a bit more down to earth, and recalls his days as a war hero. Yeah, superheroes are guys in tights, but deep down, he gets the sentiment. The world is filled with a bunch of people flinging crap at each other, and it's nice when a hero swoops in to save the day. In fact, Red has a few old Superman comics perfectly preserved in the attic.
How the hero swoops in to save the day is where Eric and Red markedly differ. They agree on the sentiment where the hero swoops in to save the day, sticking to a clear code of honor, but Eric is far more of a peacemaker and an altruist. He deeply values the times when peace can easily be made. He has a massive soft spot for Jimmy Carter, who facilitated the Camp David accords, had a deep interest in sub-Saharan African affairs, and helped to largely rid the continent of Guinea worm disease. He has a deep appreciation for JFK during the Cuban Missile Crisis, too.
They both love hero stories and wartime novels, where good trounces over evil. Anything regarding D-Day is near the top of the list. They both are interested in the effects war can have on people, and for Red, it's from personal experience. But for Eric, he's more interested in the gurgling underbelly, the unmentionables. He compares Kelso and Jackie's breakup to Sophie's Choice for morons, and it shows that moral dilemmas are of utmost importance to him. In season 1, he questions how his mother copes with losing so many of her patients at the hospital where she works. Furthermore, in season 7, he struggles with finding himself beyond his geeky hobbies, and wants to find a way to make a difference in the world. Like his mom, but without the blood and guts. So he settles on becoming a teacher, and wants to help others in a way where he can truly flourish.
However, these differing hero complexes are bound to clash. If Eric was born a decade earlier, this would've occurred during his teens, as he openly questions the merits of the Vietnam War. But since he's just a little kid, this is held off until the Gulf War. Eric may idealize the "just" wars, from World War II to the Civil War, but he's firmly against the political chessboard. Red is occasionally wary when it comes to domestic affairs, but largely champions the US's efforts to "liberate" other countries from turmoil. The Gulf War is short enough to be a blip on the radar, but if Red lives long enough to see the Iraq War, there is serious trouble for Red and Eric ahead. Donna firmly takes Eric's side (and arguably accelerates the conflict)*, but Kitty is awkwardly stuck in the middle. And simply, hell is bound to break loose.
*****
Note: Red generally likes Donna, but he struggles to see eye to eye with her when it comes to politics, since Donna is very opinionated and is an obvious leftie. Red mostly loves Reagan (minus some of the evangelical stuff), but Donna hates Reagan, for example.

“Arab traditions record that the Adites, sprung from the blood of Ham, were the first inhabitants of Yemen, Hadramaut, and the countries of Mahrah and Oman”
“This statement fully agrees with the 10th chapter of Genesis, in which we find a considerable portion of the descendants of Cush inhabiting this region, where also modern science has discovered unmistakable traces of the Cushites”
The sons of Cush are Nimrod, Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteca…

Ethiopia, or Cush, is said to be encompassed by one of the four rivers which branched off from each other at the site of the Garden of Eden, one of which was the Euphrates and another the Tigris”
“The Ethiopia there referred to must, therefore, have been in Asia, and as shown by the author of the article "Eden” in Smith's Dictionary of the Bible, included Arabia and also Susiana, or Chusistan, to the east of the Euphrates, which, as its name implies, was also the land of Cush”
“The names, "Havilah” and "Seba" two of the sons of Cush, and "Dedan," his grandson, were the names respectively of portions of Northern, Southern and Eastern Arabia implying therefore that Arabia was the first home of the Cushite race.”
“These ancient Cushites of the Arabian peninsula originally consisted of twelve tribes—Ad, Thamoud (probably so named after Thamus or Tammuz), Tasm, Djadis, Amlik (Amalek), Oumayim, Abil, Djourhoum, Wabar, Jasm, Antem and Hashem.”
“From this it would appear that the Amalekites who occupied the country to the extreme north of Arabia and the south of Palestine were of this race.”
“It would therefore appear that the Aribah or Adites, the ancient inhabitants of the Arabian peninsula, previous to the arrival of the Semitic Arabs, were the Cushite founders of the first Babylonian Empire; and that Arabia, lying midway between African and Asiatic -Ethiopia, was the first home of the Cushite race.”

World Lion /day
World Lion Day is celebrated every year on August 10 to raise awareness about the conservation of lions and their habitats.
It was first established in 2013 by Big Cat Rescue, the world’s largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to lions.
Recent studies have revealed that lions were once present in the Arabian Peninsula, significantly influencing Arab culture.
It is noted that Arabic dialects and literature contain an extensive array of almost 700 distinct names or expressions referring to the lion.
Research reveals that lions occupied a vast and diverse range spanning the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, Eurasia, and parts of India.
The lion’s habitat extended from latitudes as far south as 15°N (Yemen) to 18°N (Mali, Chad) and as far north as 45-48°N (Bulgaria, Ukraine, Hungary).
It is noteworthy that lions thrived in various environments, including deserts, steppes, and maritime coasts.
They are social animals and live in groups called prides. A pride typically consists of multiple females, their offspring, and a few adult males.
Distribution and Habitat:
Lions are found in sub-Saharan Africa and a small population exists in the Gir Forest National Park in the Indian state of Gujarat.
Protection Status:
IUCN Red List: African Lion: Vulnerable
(Globally) Asiatic Lion: Endangered.
CITES: Appendix I for populations of India, all other populations are included in Appendix II.
Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972: Schedule I

New information and more delays in the Sukhoi Su-75 "Checkmate" program
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 01/12/23 - 21:07in Military
A new Su-75 mockup was presented by Sukhoi.

With the North American Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter has a considerable advantage in orders and Russia wants to try to regain the advantage, although the Su-75 "Checkmate" fighter program has not been able to advance as planned.
The Russian aeronautical industry is suffering the repercussions of the various embargoes decided by Americans, Europeans and also Japanese.
When it was presented at the MAKS fair in the summer of 2021, the aircraft aroused great enthusiasm from aeronautical enthusiasts and experts. A few weeks later, the UAC group, owner of Sukhoi in particular, presented him with great fanfare for the first time outside Russia.
Tumblr media
From then on, it was no longer a mystery that this Sukhoi Su-75, also known as Checkmate, had been designed to allow Russia to reach its American and European competitors. It was also increasingly presented as the "non-aligned" alternative to the F-35A Lighting II. In fact, the Checkmate presented itself mainly as a supposedly stealth attack fighter, probably of the 5th generation, intended mainly for emerging nations of Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Even the Russian domestic market did not seem to be a priority for him, except perhaps in the context of replacing older aircraft, such as the Soviet-era Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrum and the Sukhoi Su-25 Frogfoot.
The future seemed bright for the fighter, until February 24, 2022, when Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to invade neighboring Ukraine under false pretexts. Soon after, European countries, the United States and other allies, such as Australia, Canada, South Korea and Japan, quickly decided on a series of economic sanctions against the Russian president, his relatives and Russian companies. The UAC was obviously part of this "package", since aircraft manufactured by Sukhoi bombed Ukrainian civilians.
Tumblr media
Proposal for an unmanned version of Checkmate.
Meanwhile, China and India counted the points while some allied nations of Moscow, especially in Asia Minor and sub-Saharan Africa, gave strong support to Putin and his troops... while continuing to accept the thousands of dollars and euros in international aid.
Before the middle of last year, the Sukhoi Su-75 program already suffered from some delays in all areas. However, in Russia it still seemed to believe in a first flight of the prototype for the end of this year, preceded by a few weeks of continuous testing.
The UAC yesterday, without ever uttering words or expressions of "economic restrictions", "embargo" or even "Ukraine", reported that it decided to postpone the taxi tests and the inaugural flight of the aircraft for a period that goes from the fourth quarter of 2024 to the first quarter of 2025. As a result, the first pre-series aircraft should not appear between 12 and 15 months after this first flight. Similarly, UAC personnel said nothing about the withdrawal of the financing of the Emirates, resulting from American and European diplomatic pressure.
Along with the press release, a new full-scale model of the plane was presented. The Sukhoi Su-75 "Checkmate" will have a new generation NPO Saturn Izdeliye 30 turbojet engine with future evolutions of the Su-57 Felon. Like the latter, the plane was designed taking into account the evolution of the radar signature. Like any good stealth aircraft, the Su-75 will have weapons in an internal compartment, but also hardpoints under the wings for a maximum combat load of 7300 to 7400 kg. The weaponry will initially consist only of Russian ammunition, and foreign equipment from China and/or Iran can then be added.
The UAC indirectly indicated that the aircraft will be equipped with an active matrix radar, allowing it to engage up to six targets at the same time, along with a front optor. It will also be optimized to be able to be connected in flight with Loyal Wingman drones.
Tumblr media
Apparently, Moscow still wants to believe in its future plane. And the Russians are right because between a Sukhoi Su-57 Felon who has been fighting for years and an increasingly distant future and hypothetical Mikoyan MiG-41, the greatness of the Soviet years seems to have been left behind.
