He doesn't trust anybody. He has no friends. He doesn't believe in love [...] That's Fadel for you. Rough on the outside, and on the inside.

horror sub-genres • virus horror
virus horror is a sub-genre that defines itself differently than zombie horror. this sub-genre toys with people’s fear of sickness/parasites and the devestating outcome that it could have on society.

After a year of combating a pandemic with relatively benign symptoms, a frustrated nation finally lets its guard down. This is when the virus spontaneously mutates, giving rise to a mind-altering plague. The streets erupt into violence and depravity, as those infected are driven to enact the most cruel and ghastly things they can think of. Murder, torture, rape and mutilation are only the beginning. A young couple is pushed to the limits of sanity as they try to reunite amid the chaos. The age of civility and order is no more. There is only "The Sadness."
Pre-order The Sadness.

literally a third of my favs were horror movies, but I was so impressed by them!! I watched them all multiple times. A DISCLAIMER, THOUGH: The Sadness was one of the most fucked up movies I've ever seen, so I would recommend to only the most hardened of horror fans.
I don't have a ton of mutuals, but I'm tagging @fantasticait and @no1mintharadefender if you guys want to do this too! (and obviously any of my other followers who think it seems fun <3)

SPOILERS FOR 'THE SADNESS'
just watched The Sadness for the first time last night and omg its so good. the way it explores not only the inherent violence in sexuality but also the mundane everyday ways that women are objectified and sexualized (before the outbreak, mostly, except for the super tense maternity ward scene.)
all i could think abt while watching the ending was *of course* shes immune. the story and narrative relies on 2 plot points to happen: 1. Jim has to become infected. and 2. Kat has to be immune.
Jim becoming infected is crucial to the point the movie makes of sexual violence being able to be done by anyone, even those that are supposed to save you, and they are often rewarded for it.
And kat being immune hammers home the point of women being objects to larger society no matter what. We know that those infected get pleasure from committing acts of violence, its what drives them to do so and it feels so good that their sense of justice is overwritten. Becoming infected means that you are able to take pleasure from the abuse inflicted both on you and to you, kat being immune ensures that she will never be able to be more than an object to be abused, and that she would never be able to take pleasure in that fact.
As Dr. Alan says in the maternity ward scene, he intends to use kat as an object for the salvation of humanity if she is human. Despite her pinnacle of innocence (in this case being represented by the lack of ability to take pleasure in violence) she will still have her freedoms taken away and her life forfeit because her body does not belong to her. it belongs to the country and society she resides in, regardless of if she falls into the hands of the infected or the government.
At the end of the movie Kat opens the door to greet the helicopter and we move away from her. Her fate is uncertain, but the movie does its best to point you into a specific interpretation of what will happen to her after that point. But we dont get to see any of it, instead, while kat has to sacrifice her life and her body for use by society, Jim, who we last see sitting with a smile on his face, largely has a net positive ending. he loses control of himself but in exchange is allowed to do whatever he wants to the people around him and instead of being punished, is rewarded via sexual gratification.
anyway its a very good movie 10/10 very spooky though.
