Abel turned so they were facing each other once Greer started talking for real. He smiled, it wasn't a happy smile, more of a thanks for looking out for me kind of a smile, but a smile nonetheless.

"I'm not gonna fight with Mahlon, Greer" he confirmed easily. "I'm not planning to fight with anyone, I think we both know 'm not gonna last too long in there" he shrugged. "I don't want to spend my last few hours, few minutes, fighting, s'like it wouldn't even be me, you know?"

Greer pulled her bottom lip between her teeth. She couldn't argue with Abel, because she would put a lot of really unpleasant things above going back into the Arena. The smell of Ten's farms on the hottest summer day was still not even on the same page as the Arena, and they both knew that.

"Yeah... he, uh, he is," she agreed, unsure of how to broach the topic of Mahlon with Abel. The truth of their situations was all just one shared open wound. "Look, I don't know what shit's gonna be like in there," she started. "But maybe jus’ try not to run into each other." Abel was probably more frail looking today than she'd ever seen him look before. Mahlon could— and very likely would— snap him like a twig, but for some reason, Greer thought maybe she could spare them both the pain of having to make things so personal. “You should jus’ walk away without even sayin’ anythin’, y’know?”
