#mdzs#lan wangji#jiang yanli#wei wuxian#jiang cheng#i ask bc i think the subject just never comes up in mdzs. we know how lan wangji feels about jiang cheng (he's a hater) but not yanli#which is a bit strange given how important she was to wei wuxian#uhh given that im the poll runner im not sure if i should share my own opinions. but#imo you can argue for any of these#yanli was made to be the perfect fridged woman so it feels like sacrilege for anyone to dislike her. she's too nice#and given that she's kind of similar in temperament to lan xichen i can see lan wangji thinking highly of her#especially after she sticks up for wei wuxian at the phoenix mountain hunt (it always comes back to wei wuxian)#but i can also see lan wangji focusing on the fact that she married into the sect that ultimately destroyed wei wuxian#he's not exactly reasonable when wei ying is involved. so i can see him arguing that she should have used her position#as wife of the jin sect heir to do more for wei wuxian. or that she should have convinced jiang cheng not to expel wei wuxian#when she was still living at lotus pier. or something like that#this is not reasonable and lan wangji does not have all the facts. but he isnt a reasonable person lmao#grudge holder 100. blame slinger 1000.#there is also the fact that wei wuxian super killed yanli's husband#so in a yanli lives au would lan wangji expect yanli to just get over this? so wei wuxian can be happy?#honestly i dont know#at any rate. in canon lan wangji doesnt seem to think very highly of jin ling. who is yanli's son#which seems to imply to me that he and yanli did not have any sort of friendship or acquaintanceship#so imo the most realistic option out of all the options here#is that lan wangji thinks of yanli as just wei wuxian's dead loved one. and not really her own person#in the end it all comes back to wei wuxian lol#yanyan polls#yanyan speaks#adding second tag bc i talked too much in the tags

Note
I ship sangcheng because I relate to Jiang Cheng and think Nie Huisang is the sexiest cultivator because I like lazy dom bottoms. It's not deeper than that chengyao deserves the win tbh
Honestly, I respect this. This is the sort of healthy self-awareness that both halves of Sangcheng could benefit from in their daily lives.

Your daily reminder that Jiang Cheng IS NOT the villain you are led to believe he is throughout the book. That's the whole point of hic character. And if you can't grasp that, then you've done MXTX's hard work a HUGE disservice and clearly just read it for the smut🤷‍♀️.
Jiang Cheng CANONICALLY makes NUMEROUS risks and sacrifices for those he loves in the book (WWX and even LWJ included), stepped up to help raise Jin Ling when he DIDN'T HAVE TO as his maternal uncle BTW. Frequently tries to hide his emotions, but his actions CLEARLY speak volumes for how much he cares deeply for the people in his life (which fyi DOES make him fall into the anime trope tsundere by definition. Heck, his ice cream ads literally described him as such. The show runners themselves called him a tsundere. That's common knowledge by now. Be fr.).
These are amongst the many CANON examples of his character that you all seem to WILLFULLY ignore.
Maybe stop accusing us of "missusing" the tag and misrepresenting the character and instead go and re read the book?? Or better yet, stick to talking about your faves?? Because you are all clearly missing some VERY important facts about his character. I js.

Round 1, Match 17
Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian (MDZS/The Untamed) vs Rei Asaka and Fukiko Ichinomiya (Oniisama E)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Poll Runner's Note: Sorry for the late post everyone, somehow it didn't show up. I don't know if Tumblr ate it or I accidentally deleted it from the queue or what.
Propaganda under break
Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian
People like to look at them as tragic bittersweet siblings, personally I believe it stops being any kind of sweet when one leads a siege to kill the other, blames him for their sisters death, tortures and attacks people for reminding him too much of the other and takes advantage of his greatest fear. I think that all kind of overshadows the sacrifice Jiang Cheng made for Wei Wuxian when they were on good terms. The way Wei Wuxian defends Jiang Cheng early in, and the way fans write him defending Jiang Cheng sounds eerily like someone describing an abuser, "That's just how he is" " he cares for me really" type stuff. Their biggest issues seem to stem from Wei Wuxian not choosing to be Jiang Cheng’s servant, like his bio father was for Jiang Cheng’s, because he wanted to help people, and because Jiang Cheng’s father treated them very differently while his mother used that to cause conflict.
Also Jiang Cheng is homophobic and Wei Wuxian is queer.
Rei Asaka and Fukiko Ichinomiya
I don’t even know where to begin. the suicide pact? everything fukiko does to rei throughout the series? the obsession and hate they both have towards each other? most normal sisters ever

I returned to Warson with the notebook and circled all the important information about shoemaking before modifying my design draft accordingly.
MC: Pity that I couldn’t find the shoes that granny used to make, else I would’ve disassembled them for better understanding.
Tumblr media
Li Man’man: (Y/n), I'm heading to the showroom to find some shoe references. Want to tag along?
Oh right, I may not be able to disassemble the shoes there, but observing the real thing up close is second to none.
MC: Sure.
❖☆———————————★❖
Tumblr media
With notebooks and cameras in hand, we headed straight to the 36th floor. The showroom was a place that I’d only seen once from afar on the day that I’d successfully entered Warson.
Li Man’man: I'll be going to the one in front, but we can head back together later.
❖☆———————————★❖
Tumblr media
Pushing the doors open, we saw glass display cases filled with classic works from major brands. Tops, dresses, shoes… Everything was neatly organized and arranged according to their respective categories.
MC: Isn’t that the feather heel over there a limited product!? There’s only one pair of it in existence!
MC: Promise’s runway’s crystal shoes! And the latest spring/summer Mirror collection!
Excited to see these designs that I’d only ever seen in magazines and the internet, I quickly took out my camera and notebook, earnestly snapping pictures of the works and penning down the details.
It was at this moment that a click sounded as a girl that I didn’t recognize walked in.
Her eyes slightly widened upon seeing me, but her expression soon leveled into an icy one. Chin raised, and she walked right up to me.
Figuring that she was also here to see the exhibited products, I moved aside to make way for her. However, she was staring at the notebook in my hand.
Tumblr media
??: Did you draw this?
MC: Yeah.
??: I'm Jiang Lai, a designer from Team B.
MC: Nice to meet you, I'm (Y/n).
Jiang Lai: I know. You're the 2nd runner-up for the Warson Prize. Gao Cheng came in 2nd.
Jiang Lai: And the winner was named… Wu?
MC: Her name's Wu Yue.
I don’t know why she was bringing up the Warson Prize now, of all things, but I still corrected her with a frown.
Jiang Lai: Yes, I’ve heard that the development for her personal brand’s not going well, but I suppose that’s normal.
Jiang Lai: Given how the standards of the winners of this year’s Warson Prize aren’t really all that, I mean.
Tumblr media
MC: !?
Jiang Lai: I’ve seen all of the works that got submitted for the finals. What Wu Yue and Gao Cheng made was totally unoriginal.
Jiang Lai: And you… That black chiffon hat of yours is ridiculous. That thing had absolutely no design sense to it,
Jiang Lai: Had I not missed the registration date, I would have won the Warson Prize.
▷Choice (SUN): Question her intentions
MC: What are you trying to say? Jiang Lai: I challenge you to a competition. Are you game? Jiang Lai: Why don’t we compete with each other to make black chiffon hats? I’ll say this first, but I’ll definitely come out on top. She looked at me with a haughty smile. MC: We could. But what are the rules? And who are the judges? She pauses, seemingly at a loss for words for a while. MC: Did you not think this through before proposing it…? Jiang Lai: Who said I didn’t? I’ve thought it all out! We’ll invite Deputy Director Mya and Director Qi to be our judges! MC: Sorry, but they were the ones who decided on the results of the finals. Therefore, that means that they’ve acknowledged our design standards. MC: So it looks like there’s no longer any need for us to compete with each other. If you’re not convinced, feel free to look for Director Qi to voice your grievances.
▷Choice (MOON): Defend your pride
MC: Ever heard of a saying? Jiang Lai: What? MC: A person who only thinks about the “what ifs” will never succeed. Jiang Lai: …You-! Jiang Lai’s eyes widened in anger, but I'd only glared back at her with twice as much venom. Thankfully, she turned away just as I was starting to feel the strain on my eyes. She blinked in disbelief and gave a small snort. Jiang Lai: You’re all bark and no bite. Why not compete with me? Only if you have the guts, of course. Jiang Lai: Why don’t we compete with each other to make black chiffon hats? I’ll say this first, but I’ll definitely come out on top. Are you game? MC: I won't compete with you. Jiang Lai: I knew you wouldn't have the guts to- MC: Not because I'm afraid to, but because there's no need to. MC: If I win, you will think it is a fluke because I've worked on this subject before MC: Likewise, if I lose, it will only serve to make you hoot even louder. Hence, there's no merit in competing with you because there is nothing to gain either way. MC: In any case, they were the ones who decided on the results of the finals. Therefore, that means that they’ve acknowledged our design standards. MC: If you’re not convinced, feel free to look for Director Qi to voice your grievances.
Jiang Lai’s expression twisted. She stomped her feet in anger and looked as if she was about to cry.
Tumblr media
MC: If you are really that adamant about competing with me, then perhaps you should do well to prepare for this shoe-designing competition.
That kept her mouth shut until I finished collecting the materials I needed and pushed open the door to leave.
❖☆———————————★❖
Closing the door, I breathed a sigh of relief.
Tumblr media
MC: That’s the last kind of person I want to deal with… Thank god no one’s here. It’d be embarrassing if someone overheard me bragging like that.
??: Unfortunately for you, I've overheard everything.
MC: !
I whipped around to see Sariel leaning against the wall with his arms folded. His golden eyes were firmly fixated on me.
MC: Director Qi! What are you doing here?
Tumblr media
Sariel: This is the Design Center. What do you think?
He had a look on his face that said “What sort of stupid question are you asking?”
MC: …
MC: You didn't hear much, did you?
Sariel: Of course.
MC: Thank god for that.
Sariel: But I did hear you say that I've acknowledged your design standards.
MC: …!
Sariel: Now, I wonder… When have I ever said that?
Tumblr media
Sariel: Care to remind me?
MC: Uh, what I actually meant to say was that… you have a keen eye, foresight, and insight!
Sariel: …Unbelievable.
Sorry, man. I knew that I was exaggerating, but I just wanted her to give up on the idea of a competition as soon as possible.
I was just about to explain myself a little more when I noticed that he was staring at the design draft I'd made on the notebook I was holding.
Sariel: Is this your design draft?
MC: No, no, no! This one's not a proper draft! It's something I just randomly sketched!
I quickly hid the notebook behind my back, shaking my head at having been caught red-handed.
MC: I lack experience designing shoes, but I'll work hard…
Sariel frowned ever so slightly, but the blank look in his eyes seemed to have softened just a little.
Sariel: You don't look particularly inclined to learn.
Sariel: Or, have you already forgotten about your mentor who was just announced this morning?
MC: You mean… I can just ask you directly about it?
I lowered my voice and carefully observed his expression.
Tumblr media
Sariel: I will be in my office every day from noon till 2 PM unless there's an emergency.
I quickly nodded, fearing that he'd go back on his words a second later.
Tumblr media
MC: Thank you, Director Qi! I’ll be sure to work hard on learning how to make shoes!
Sariel snorted and turned away.
Sariel: It’s not that I want to teach you. It’s just that Warson’s systems cannot be changed.

Three years after the last time he saw Jiang Cheng, Wei Wuxian received a summons to Lotus Pier. The note found him and Lan Wangji out in the wilds of Qinghe where they have been hunting some form of beast. It had been terrorizing the local commoners and the Nie had not been doing enough, so Wei Wuxian had packed up Little Apple and dragged Lan Wangji on another wild adventure.
So far the wild adventure had consisted mostly of rain, mud, and sleeping in the dirt, with no sign of the beast and a number of surprisingly un-terrified villagers, so Wei Wuxian was about ready to put it down to wild rumor and head back to the Cloud Recesses. At which point he received the note from Jiang Cheng, and decided that he might as well see what his once-shidi wanted.
It wasn't that he didn't want to go back to Lotus Pier. For all that had happened after, it was still the first home Wei Wuxian had ever known and, when he let himself, he missed it with a fierceness that left him hollow. He just didn't let himself miss it often, because all that was in the past, and Wei Wuxian was focused on the present.
It took them several days to reach Lotus Pier, and when they got there, Jiang Cheng came storming out of his office like a thundercloud, glaring all the time. He looked thinner than the last time they had spoken, his cheekbones even more pronounced.
"Good," he snapped. "You're here. This way."
He led them through a rambling maze of corridors and open walkways that Wei Wuxian didn't remember - except he did remember, and it all smelled like home and loss and came to rest in a heavy weight in his belly where his nascent golden core spun and sparked merrily to itself. Jiang Cheng led them to the infirmary, where a young woman was lying on a bed.
"Is she alive?" Jiang Cheng asked.
Wei Wuxian looked at the woman, then at Jiang Cheng, his eyebrows climbing.
"Jiang Cheng, I'm not a -"
"You're the foremost expert on ghosts in the world, Wei Wuxian," Jiang Cheng interrupted him. "She was gored by a Soul Devouring Demon two weeks ago."
Wei Wuxian looked back at the girl, then took a careful step closer. The way she lay so still, her breath perfectly even...he reached out to touch her arm and feel for any traces of life.
"She eats, right?"
"She will swallow if someone feeds her, walk if someone leads her. If you leave her to herself she does nothing that a fierce corpse couldn't do, but I don't sense any resentful energy in her. I need to know if her soul is still...here...and if it can be restored."
"Well," Wei Wuxian said. "I can check, there are a few talismans I can look into...It's going to take a few hours."
"Good." Jiang Cheng turned to leave, then paused. "Thank you."
And then he was gone.
***
Jiang Cheng was doing paperwork when a runner came panting into his office, saying that Wei Wuxian wanted him. Jiang Cheng didn't run, because when sect leaders run sect members get uneasy, but he did walk slightly faster than was his wont.
When he got to the infirmary, he found Wei Wuxian looking tired, and Lan Wangji looking blank.
"Her soul's gone," Wei Wuxian reported quietly. "I've tried everything, Lan Wangji played Inquiry...there's nothing there. I'm sorry, Jiang Cheng."
Jiang Cheng nodded.
"Thank you, Wei Wuxian," he said again. "And...thank you for coming. I thought you would avoid Lotus Pier forever. It's good that you came home."
Wei Wuxian's eyes went wide and his mouth opened, but thank all the gods and ancestors for Lan Wangji, because he swept Wei Wuxian off to get some breakfast before Wei Wuxian could get emotions all over Jiang Cheng.
Once he was along, Jiang Cheng sighed and pressed his fingertips to the bridge of his nose. The little fool, what had she been thinking? Of course he knew what she was thinking - she was thinking that she owed a debt despite all they'd done to assure her otherwise, she was thinking that she had found a solution to the problem they'd been working on for three years, and she was thinking that it required a soulless body that yet lived.
And wouldn't you know it, there was a Soul Devouring Demon wandering the countryside, and wasn't it the Head Disciple''s duty to go after it.
"This is the last thing he would have wanted," he snapped at the slow-breathing corpse on the infirmary bed. "The last thing."
He could still remember when she had come to the Jiang, brought by Jin Guangyao under cover of night. One of his father's other bastards, Jin Guangyao had whispered once they had been private. It had been a year or more before Jin Guangshan had died, and nobody wanted to hand him a daughter to use and abuse the way he was already using Jin Guangyao. But her mother had died, and Jin Guangyao had had nowhere else to go. They'd been something close to friends by then, and Jin Guangyao knew that the Jiang were always ready to open their arms to a new disciple.
Nearly twenty years, Jiang Bao had been a member of his sect. In the last few years, as she'd grown into adulthood, she'd even become a friend.
And she loved her brother beyond reason. She'd told Jiang Cheng herself, how the small and smiling dark-eyed man had threatened the madame into giving her up when her mother had died with her contract unfulfilled, and brought her that same night to the door of the Jiang Clan of Yunmeng, where she was treated just like any of the other orphans Jiang Cheng had brought into his sect. Jiang Bao had believed that she owed Jin Guangyao her life, and now she had decided to pay the debt.
Jiang Cheng sighed again, and picked up the feather-light body to carry it away. Like all of Jin Guangshan's bastards, she was slim and short and lighter than she should have been - he wondered if Wei Wuxian's new body ran on nerves the same way Jin Guangyao and Jiang Bao did.
***
In the end the ritual was stupidly easy. The most complicated part was procuring a body - healthy with no wounds, yet soulless. Jiang Bao had so kindly provided, and left Jiang Cheng to either make use of her unwanted gift or squander it.
Jiang Cheng was no fool. He hadn't lived through the Sunshot Campaign and the lean years after the war by squandering opportunities. Wei Wuxian had checked for her soul and it was gone - but Jiang Cheng had known it was the moment the juniors brought her back, but he burned incense for her anyway. And he would carve her a tablet, not for the memorial hall because if all went well nobody would know that she was dead, but for his private shrine, where he kept the tablets for those the world would rather he not mourn. Wei Wuxian's tablet had stood there once. Jin Guangyao's stood there now.
Casting the ritual was a matter of scrawling some talismans, sacrificing some blood, and naturally having a soul handy to stuff into the body. That was the least of his problems, if he was being honest. Since he already had the soul and all - he wasn't about to let a man who had become family be tormented for a century, and it turned out that Nie Mingjue generated enough resentful energy to mast a quick and careful soul-syphoning spell.
He placed the softly glowing crystal over Jiang Bao's heart, and started channeling spiritual energy through it.
The crystal became bright, then brighter, until Jiang Cheng started to worry that the ritual was going to cost him his eyes as well as his head disciple, and then with a final flash like Zidian's power, the crystal cracked.
And Jiang Bao breathed deep, and screamed.
***
It took some time to get the newly reborn Jin Guangyao calmed down enough to have a conversation. The man was understandably distraught, and he'd been having a bad week even before he died, but he did eventually calm down.
Enough to glare at Jiang Cheng anyway.
"How could you let her do this?" he demanded, sitting on the edge of the altar table and gripping his knees as though holding on to them was the only thing stopping him from going for Jiang Cheng's throat. "I trusted you with her, Jiang Wanyin! My sister!"
Jiang Cheng could do nothing.
"I'd forbidden her from even considering it," he said. "She offered, repeatedly, and I said no, I said that you would rather stay dead than have your resurrection cost her life. So she went out and fed herself to a Soul Devouring Demon because she thought she owed you her life. Because, and I don't know if you've noticed this, you Jin are a bunch of stubborn assholes!"
Jin Guangyao sighed.
"Why did you even bring me back? I was supposed to be dead, Wanyin."
"Because you didn't deserve to die like that, and because I'm tired of letting go of people I care about."
Jin Guangyao looked up, just a flash of bright dark eyes under long lashes - it was truly amazing that nobody had ever seen the resemblance, but then again the Chief Cultivator and the Head Disciple of the Jiang had never had much cause to interact in public.
"I...Thank you, Jiang Cheng," he whispered. Then he took a deep breath. "How...how is Lan Xichen?"
"Still in seclusion," Jiang Cheng said gruffly. He'd thought they had been friends, at least. Over the years they had bonded over their friendship with Jin Guangyao, and he had to admit that it stung that Lan Xichen had refused to see him and sent his letters back unopened. "He's been refusing my messages. You know how he gets."
Jin Guangyao nodded. If there was anyone in the world who knew how the great Zewu-Jun got, it was the man who loved him more than anything.
"I'll send him a butterfly," he said. "You will have to put up with us cluttering up your sect for a while, I'm afraid."
"Don't be ridiculous," Jiang Cheng snapped before he could think. "You're staying, of course. I mean...if you want to - but I-"
"If you want me to stay," Jin Guangyao said, and smiled, "I will stay. And if Lan Xichen wishes to see me, he will come to see me here. Now let me get that butterfly sent. Did you know it's his birthday today?"

Long Night in Longwood
by ElDiablito_SF
M, 13, Wangxian
Summary: For three years, Marshal Lan "The Swan" Zhan and Marshal Jiang "JC" Cheng have been scouring the country for Wei Wuxian, who'd done a runner from Chicago after causing a fracas. Could it be they finally found… him???
Mojo's comments: Aww, this was delightfully absurd, and I enjoyed every bit of it. Also, the included artwork is fantastic. Also, also: Old Shitface Yao the saloon owner is going to nourish me for a week.
Excerpt: “Well, I’ll say,” JC mumbled, looking askance at the singer and the corpse of the former proprietor of the saloon. “The crowd was getting restless and I came back here to see how you were getting on. And what do I find? A corpse, and the two of you in a prelude to the carnal embrace. What about your undying love for Wei Wuxian, huh?” “Who’s Wei Wuxian?” The Red Lotus looked momentarily scandalized. “That your girlfriend, sweetie? I should’ve known a handsome cad like you would be taken.” “It’s not…” Lan Zhan stammered a bit helplessly. “I’m not…” “What? Taken?” the Red Lotus asked with a sly grin. “Handsome,” JC cut in, throwing Lan Zhan a rather judgmental look. “Look, it’s…” Again, Lan Zhan found himself at a loss for words. “It’s all rather complicated. But in any case, you don’t know that name, then?” “Who, darling?” “Wei Ying.” “Who’s that, baby?” “Wei Wuxian,” JC cut in again. “Well, which is it, I haven’t got all night,” the singer declared as she turned towards her vanity and fixed the locks of the crimson wig around her sharp cheekbones. “It’s the same man!” JC replied, growing visibly irritated. “Oh! It’s a man! Well, why didn’t you say so before, darling? Here I was all getting worked up and jealous.” She looked back over her shoulder and threw a playful wink in Lan Zhan’s direction.

cql for the ask game!! :3
hi Jana :3 thank you!
My rating (1-10): 8/10 objectively but 11/10 for filling my heart withloveand other emotions
My favourite character: I can never answer this 😭 my heart says lan wangji but how am I supposed to see this not answer wei wuxian, the greatest character of all time, huh? RUNNERS UP: jiang yanli, wen zhuliu, jin ling, wen ning, a-qing <3
My least favourite character: man I like everyone a lot for the roles they play. like, of course jgs is a shit, wrh is a shit, but they're meant to be awful and sleazy and corrupt and cruel. I truly don't think there's any character whose presence irritates or angers me. su she, I guess, but I more pity him than anything
The character I think I’d be friends with: WEN NING!!! JIANG YANLI!!! wei wuxian who can be friends with anyone and whose attention and kindness and consideration often feels reaches through the screen to my as a viewer. I like to think I'd get along with lwj but he likes maybe three people so probably not
The character I think I won’t hit off with: jiang cheng because I'd judge him and I'm not good at hiding how I feel and he'd hate that probably. also nhs because I can't lie and I wouldn't be able to keep up with whatever he's up to and also I'd be a stickler for the rules
My favourite episode/scene: uuooohhhhh how to choose. god damn. I'm going to say the 43 snow scene tied with the gc reveal scene tied with jyl defending wwx tied with "I still am' tied with yiling laozu reveal tied with the very last scene tied with the wuji reunion in ep2 OKAY I'll stop
Whose clothing style I like best: jiang yanli!! I have a fondness for the light and airy clothing she wears - it looks so ethereal and beautiful. shoutout to wwx though our wuxia goth icon
Times I watched it (and if I would again): goodness, maybe four or five times? I'm not itching for a rewatch soon but I will rewatch again at some point in all likelihood
thank you!!!

Xiantober Day 9 ❅ Training
Wei Ying spewed coke all over the table. Jiang Cheng voiced his intense distress, but Jiang Yanli just reached into her purse for a tissue packet.
"A triathlon?!?" Wei Ying sputtered as he ripped open the tissues and mopped up the coke.
"My brother was interested in trying it. Nie Mingjue will be away for work the weekend it's being held, so he invited me to do it with him." Lan Zhan opened the container of his perfect, diagonally-sliced whole wheat avocado lettuce tomato sandwich.
"And you said yes?" Wei Ying's voice rose several octaves. Jiang Cheng glanced around the liberal art's building lobby and shushed him. Wei Ying waved him off.
"With what time?" He cried "You are taking nineteen credits this semester, have orchestra and tutoring."
"I trained for the marathon last year without any issue." Lan Zhan pointed out.
"But," Wei Ying snapped his mouth shut while putting some real thought into why he felt immediately opposed to Lan Zhan completing in a triathlon. "Your bunnies will miss you if you are too busy."
"Oh!" Jiang Yanli exclaimed, "Would you look at the time. We have dinner with our parents to get to. Lovely to see you Lan Zhan. Take care A-Xian!" She hauled a confused Jiang Cheng to his feet and pushed him toward the exit.
Lan Zhan watched them go, then turned to Wei Ying. "If you are worried about not spending time together, why don't you train with me?"
"What?" Wei Ying scoffed, "No, I said the bunnies. Besides, I'm way to busy. They started scheduling me for a few more hours each week, which I asked for, but..."
"Are you worried you won't be able to keep up with me and Xichen?" Lan Zhan said as Wei Ying trailed off. Wei Ying's mouth fell open. Lan Zhan calmly took a bite out of his sandwich.
"Are you kidding me?" Wei Ying leaned forward, "Keep up with you? I'll leave you in the dust!"
"I grew up in Yungmeng, swimming all summer long! I'm the fastest swimmer there is. And I'll have you know that I'm a pretty fast runner too! I'm always outrunning people's dogs when I deliver their food! And, speaking of that, I'm the fastest delivery person they have!"
"My bike even beats people in cars sometimes!" Wei Ying huffed, "Just you watch."
Lan Zhan finished his sandwich and wiped the corners of his mouth, "So you'll train with me?"
"Of course, Lan Zhan." Wei Ying grumbled as they gathered up their things.
He did not realize when he agreed to this that it meant meeting Lan Zhan at five every morning to go for a run or a swim. He dragged himself out of bed and complained the whole time, but was secretly grateful because it meant their training time didn't eat into their move nights.
Plus he enjoyed any extra time he got to spend with Lan Zhan even if it was before the crack of dawn, when he kept embarrassing himself by showing up to the gym as a half-asleep mess while Lan Zhan looked refreshed and perfect.
And it started to be the perfect excuse to spend the night at Lan Zhan's place. Why bother going home after they hung out when he had to come right back to the campus gym next to his apartment. Staying over meant extra time harassing the bunnies and his favorite person. So, all in all, he didn't mind waking up so early and spending his free time working on cardio.
The day of the race came. He and Lan Zhan and Lan Huan all stood together at the beginning. A sense of anticipation and challenge gripped him.
They dove into the lake together and hit the other side at the same time. Lan Zhan made sure Wei Ying's helmet was properly secured before they hopped onto their bikes and raced down the winding roads together. When they pulled on their running shoes, Wei Ying teased Lan Zhan about double-knotting his laces.
Lan Huan kept pace and threw them warm glances the whole time until they reached the sprint, then he pulled a head and secured second place overall.
Lan Zhan and Wei Ying crossed the finish line hand in hand in the top ten. The Jiang's and Nie Huaisang screamed and waved their signs. Wei Ying threw his arms around Lan Zhan's shoulders then gave him a big, sweaty kiss.
"See," he panted, "I beat you by a whole two seconds."
"Mn." Lan Zhan agreed, drawing Wei Ying in for another congratulatory kiss.

7 and 13
Anything for MXTX novels
Hiii! You definitely came right for the throat!
So for 7., it's probably a toss up between Mu Qing and Liu Qingge. Like they aren't strictly speaking evil or anything, but the fact that I have immediate cringe reactions to seeing their names listed in fic tags or meta posts probably says something. Runner up in MDZS is Nie Mingjue, though the worst of my salt against him has somewhat faded. Somewhat.
As for 13, Jiang Cheng still holds the top of the pack for that, it's not even a contest. The knitting fisherman who personally rebuilt Lotus Pier with his own two hands and no help and makes personal lunch boxes and forces his disciples to take breaks and everyone adores him will require a loooooooot of fanon bullshit to be topped at that.
I'm not even going into inside jokes for this one! All of these are things I've seen at some point.

Let Go and Take Hold of Tomorrow
Let Go and Take Hold of Tomorrow by InTheGreySpaces
Wei Wuxian carried Lan Zhan, trembling and nearly clinging to him, straight out the charred gate of Cloud Recesses with Jiang Cheng less than an arm's length from his shoulder and snarling threats at anyone who even looked like they were going to question the rumpled, dirty burden held close against Wei Wuxian's chest but clearly bearing all the markings of the last living threat to his throne.
Wei Wuxian is the strongest runner-up to the failing Emperor's throne, but first he has to clear the path...through Lan Clan Gusu, who have pocketed their two young heirs to make a bid for the throne themselves. The eldest, Lan Xichen, escaped into the night with his uncle, but the youngest is left behind, undefended, after his mother gives her life trying to protect him.
In the aftermath of the battle, Wei Wuxian finds the boy, rumored to be his greatest enemy, is in truth lost, alone, helpless...and quite possibly the most beautiful thing Wei Wuxian has ever seen.

Separate from the ask meme proper, but a question I've been thinking about recently that I'd love to hear your thoughts on: who, of the people left living at the end of the novel/show, do you think is going to be left feeling the worst for the longest?
I think...... it’s gotta be Lan Xichen. Which is really, really tragic, because more than anyone else, he didn’t do anything wrong. He just tried so, so hard to be the best person he could be, and to do right by everyone he was responsible for or cared for, and in the end, it all comes back to kick him in the teeth in like ten different ways.
And a lot of it comes down to him loving and trusting Jin Guangyao, which just... fucks me up, it really does. He was kind when he had to reason to be, and where nobody in his society would have blamed him for being indifferent. He gave recognition and respect to someone who was being treated poorly, and I do think Jin Guangyao really truly never wanted to do wrong by Lan Xichen. Even at the very, very end, when he’s like ‘die with me?’, I can’t really vibe with the interpretations that he was doing it to twist the knife, or to be sure Lan Xichen never forgot him, or anything that cruel. I won’t get into my personal headcanons for his motivations in that scene, but cruelness... doesn’t vibe.
It’s just really unfortunate that Jin Guangyao was willing to be cruel to other people who Lan Xichen loved, or willing to let people Lan Xichen loved be emotional casualties. And he’s willing to either passively or actively use Lan Xichen to facilitate his less-moral goals, which... makes me very sad. Especially as piece by piece of the puzzle is revealed to him. Part of why I’m a lame no-fun-allowed person when it comes to himbo Lan Xichen is because of the delicate balancing act that Lan Xichen is left doing as the story present progresses, and the way that there’s no good outcome, and the way that he recognizes that, and recognizes the implications of the things he’s learning and the implications of the things that he’s seen and heard and what he’s quote-unquote allowed to happen, and the enormity of what he’s being asked to understand now. And he’s not just smart enough to recognize it, but he doesn’t place that burden on anyone else’s shoulders, he carries it himself.
He lets his little brother and Wei Wuxian make wild accusations against his sworn brother, with minimal proof, and it would be so easy to dismiss their concerns, or to just tell them to come back when they have actual evidence. And this isn’t the first time he’s heard people saying nasty things about Jin Guangyao, he admits that much outright. He dismissed those other people’s concerns (and I’m certain some of it was son-of-a-whore tier class-related bullshit) and has to recognize that by dismissing that, he’s complicit in the harm that Jin Guangyao has done. As the story goes on, he has to recognize the ways Jin Guangyao was involved in Wei Wuxian’s death, and the way that broke his little brother’s heart. He has to recognize that Jin Guangyao used him, and used his musical expertise, to drive their mutual sworn brother into an early grave. He still grieves for Nie Mingjue, even in the story present. In the show, when he was asked if he wanted to say goodbye to Nie Mingjue, the way he tears up and wordlessly nods, it absolutely breaks my heart.
And even then, even seeing everything terrible that Jin Guangyao has done, he knows more intimately than just about anybody else what good things Jin Guangyao has also done. Things like the watchtowers were public news, but as a fellow sect leader, I’m sure Lan Xichen was intimately aware of all the work Jin Guangyao had to do to bring them about, and the effects of the watchtowers being put into place. He’s been Jin Guangyao’s sworn brother and political ally for years. He’s seen how hard Jin Guangyao has worked and how much he’s accomplished despite people making a point of washing their hands after touching him. And he knows the smaller things too, the personal things, no matter whether you’re going by book or show canon. He heard about how Nie Mingjue had a new servant who had been especially useful, he saw some of how Meng Yao cared for Nie Huaisang, and probably heard more in letters. When his home was burned down and his father was dying, Meng Yao sheltered and cared for him at great personal risk and no guarantee of future gain.
And at the end, he’s left both intimately aware of how much harm Jin Guangyao has done, and the good that he’s done, and is left to reconcile those two sides of him without being able to talk to the man himself. Instead, he’s left to watch as everyone starts gossiping about how Jin Guangyao was a rotten egg from the start, and how nobody should ever have expected anything different from that son of a whore. I’m sure that there are people who would make an effort to help Lan Xichen, like his family, or even Wei Wuxian. But in the whole story... I’m not sure he ever burdens anyone else with his problems, unless he’s left with no other option. He offers other people his support, and does everything he can to avoid asking for support. He retreats into seclusion, and it’s unsurprising to me, and absolutely breaks my heart. I am very attached to any post-canon fic that finds a way to draw him out, because without some outside impetus, I could easily see him imitating his father, and withdrawing completely from the world for the rest of his life. I don’t know when he’ll manage to stop feeling bad to enough of an extent that he’s willing to interact with the outside world again, but I’m really not sure he’ll ever stop feeling awful, and I’m very invested in any story that puts time into helping him heal, even a little

Here's my mdzs hot take/unpopular opinion:
I don't mind if jfm was nicer to wwx than his own children
I mean God forbid jfm be softer on the kid who lost both his parents and had to live in the streets, fend for himself for years, and suffered more in his short life than most people will in a lifetime. Any adult with a heart (madam Ew doesn't count, she's only a breathing talking pile of sh*t) would go easy on a kid with wwx's circumstances, especially considering what a sweet boy wwx was despite everything he was through, it's normal that he would melt even the iciest of hearts (except yzy's cuz hers was carved out of stone)
So yeah I wouldn't hate jfm if he was nicer to wwx. It's not like he was abusing and neglecting his own children at the same time, unlike what the JC/YZY stans would have us believe. While yzy was abusive and a b*tch to her children, screaming at them, mocking and demeaning them, and that's when she wasn't away on some "night hunt", jfm was the one who stood up for his daughter when he realized what jzx thought of her, he was the one who tried to correct jc's wrong ideas calmly and rationally without yelling at him or making fun of him. even when jfm brought wwx to LP and wwx was scared of jc's puppies he didn't send them away immediately, he waited for days to see if wwx will adjust but when he didn't and jfm realized the dogs had to go for wwx to feel safe in his new home, he didn't just send them away he tried to talk to jc about it 1st.
Imo jfm's only fault as a parent is allowing his wife to abuse his children and ward and turn his own son against him.
Which really makes me wonder what did yzy do to break him? When he was talking to jgs about ending their kids' engagement he didn't bend when jgs argued for keeping the engagement, and he was willing to go demand WRH return his disciples swords knowing that WRH wasn't above killing his fellow sect leaders (actually it's even telling and funny how jfm would rather face Wen f*cking Ruohan than stay home with yzy), and in the attack on LP he went back in there knowing that there was no chance he could win or come out alive, heck even before marrying yzy he had the guts to refuse her and family for a while despite the pressure they were putting on him. It's only when dealing with that woman that jfm seems to completely lose his spine.
Anyways it's true jfm won't be getting a father of the year award (that one goes to wangxian and lqr as the runner up) but he wasn't a bad one either, he was at worst a sub-par parent imo.
I wouldn't have minded if JFM had been nicer to Wei Wuxian but he wasn't. People are like "he was easier on him" .... um that's bc WWX wasn't the one suggesting THEY STAND BY AND LET INNOCENT PEOPLE DIE. People can't really be this devoid of logic?!
I think some people have a really weird concept of parenting. A parent correcting their child's behavior is not hate, it's literally their job. A job a lot of parents today don't quite bother to do. JFM isn't "hating on his son" bc he's trying to raise him to be a decent person. How did these people pass through their childhoods?! Did they think every time their parents corrected their behavior it was a personal attack on them!? No bloody wonder they relate to jiang cheng.
I don't personally feel that there was much JFM could've done to help WWX in the Jiang household...and trust me it took me a while to get to this bc at first I was like... you're telling me he couldn't just put his foot down, chuck her off a pier? But alas he couldn't divorce YZY or chuck her off a pier. She also came from a powerful clan. A clan powerful enough and scheming enough to pressure him into marrying her venomous ass. He tries here :
Jiang FengMian, “My lady, what are you doing here?”
Madam Yu, “What am I doing here? What a joke that I am asked of such a thing! Sect Leader Jiang, do you still remember that I’m also the leader of Lotus Pier? Do you still remember that every inch of the earth here is my territory?
Not exactly a resounding success. The best thing to do was to avoid her as much as possible. If he gave in to what she wanted she would've taken a mile. If he'd stood up for WWX she would've just flipped her shit more the way her son did in the ancestral hall when WWX stood up for LWJ. YZY and jc are really cut from the same cloth. As for why he stood up for YanLi, probably that was his line in the sand. Knowing how miserable his own marriage had made him he couldn't bear the thought of his daughter suffering through the same thing and he still had some control over that. Considering how Jin Zixuan was acting about her it's completely understandable.
Lastly I believe JFM went to get the swords at the behest of the Wens or rather he was purposely lured away from Lotus Pier. Or at least that's what WWX surmises.
Wei WuXian asked, “Uncle Jiang went out so early in the morning—why hasn’t he come back yet? Would he make it in time for dinner?”
In the morning, Jiang FengMian and Madam Yu had an argument again. To call it an argument didn’t seem quite right. Madam Yu alone lost her temper, while some of Jiang FengMian’s bearing remained throughout the entire exchange. Jiang Cheng answered, “He’s at the Wen Sect for our swords again, isn’t he? Whenever I think that my Sandu might be held in the hands of a Wen-dog right now, I…”
....
Wei WuXian remembered Jiang FengMian, who went out earlier, and thought, They purposely chose to come at such a time. Or, rather, they purposely led Uncle Jiang out of here!
I mean not a bad strategy considering YZY loses her shit when she hears about the supervisory office and gets the whole Clan killed. Further supporting WWX’s assertion, I don't believe JFM was returning with the swords. One because he would have probably given them back to WWX and jc and two because :
Two months ago, the Two Jades of Lan cooperated in a surprise attack with Jiang Cheng. They took back the swords that had been gathered from each sect’s disciples at Wen Chao’s ‘sector of indoctrination’, bringing them back to their owners. Only then did Sandu and Bichen return to them.
Lan WangJi’s light eyes glanced at the other sword at Jiang Cheng’s waist. He turned his gaze away.
A few moments later, staring straight in front of him, he asked, “Has Wei Ying still not appeared yet?”
