Drake swallows hard, the muscles of his throat jumping beneath my hand.
âDonât make me repeat myself,â I murmur, trying to ignore the way hips cant back against me. Â âWhy the hell are you here?â
âLiam is getting married,â he manages to croak out.
I tighten my grip on Drakeâs body, unconsciously betraying my distress at the mention of the Cordonian prince. Â âThatâs got nothing to do with me,â I respond, relaxing my hold, but still keeping his body tight to mine.
âWe need to stop the wedding. Â And we need your help.â
âGoddamn it,â I mutter, leaning forward to rest my head on his shoulder. Â I let out a frustrated groan and Drake shivers, his breath catching. Â I shove him away from me, running my hands through my hair in an attempt to calm my nerves. Â âCome on then. Â Letâs get this over with.â
Thirty minutes laterâŚâŚ.
âIâm sorry⌠you want me to do what?â  I lean back in my office chair, looking over my desk at Hana, Maxwell, and Drake.
âAttend Liam and Madelineâs engagement party,â Hana says hurriedly.
âTalk to Liam privately,â Drake says.
âAnd blow up the engagement so Liam can call off the wedding!â Maxwell finishes.
I rest my elbows on my desk and drop my head into my hands. Â âYeah, thatâs what I though you said.â
âI know weâre asking a lot of you,â Hana says, rising from her seat and joining me behind my desk. Â She wraps her arms around me and squeezes tightly. Â âAnd Iâm sorry we just barged in like this, but we really donât know what else to do.â
I raise my head and gently extricate myself from her embrace. Â âEven if I agree to do this, thereâs a chance it wonât work, Cinnamon Bun.â
Hana smiles at my use of her nickname. Â âIt may not,â she admits. Â âBut at least weâll have tried.â
âLiam has to get married at some point,â I continue. Â âWhy canât he just marry Madeline and get it over with?â
Maxwell grimaces. Â âMadeline is awful.â
âLiam deserves to be happy. Â And you made him happy,â Drake says, looking as if this admission is causing him physical pain. Â âHe needs to be reminded that thereâs more to his life than just duty to Cordonia.â
I bark out a laugh, the sound loud and startlingly cruel in the relative silence of my office. Â âHe didnât care when I left; what makes you think heâs going to care now?â
âTo be fair you completely ghosted him. Â What was he supposed to do?â Maxwell says bitterly.
âI left him a note.â Â Defensive, I cross my arms over my chest.
The three of them exchange a look I canât decipher.
âLiam never got a note,â Hana says slowly.
I shake my head.  âNo.  No⌠I left a note in his room, just like I did you guys.  I told him⌠it doesnât matter now.  But I left him a note.  Are you sure he didnât get it?â
âNo, he didnât.â Â Drake scowls. âWhich means someone got to it before he did.â
âYou really think someone in the palace would hide something like that from Liam?â Maxwell asks, frowning.
âConstantine,â Hana whispers. Â âConstantine would.â
âIt doesnât matter now,â I repeat, shaking my head. I drum my fingers against my desktop, thinking.  âSo to re-cap... you want me to go to a party full of people who despise me and would do almost anything to keep me from being with Liam. Then you want me to somehow sneak past who knows how many bodyguards to try to speak with Liam privately.  And if he does agree to talk to me, you want me to convince him to rebel against his father and call off his wedding, which could potentially affect his ability become king?â
âYeah, that about sums it up,â Maxwell says brightly.
âYouâre all fucking insane.â
Hana sighs. Â âWe understand, Callum. Â It was unfair of us to even - â
âDo it for me,â Drake interrupts her. Â âPlease, Callum. Â Please do this for me.â
His brown eyes bore into mine, silently pleading with me.
âMotherfucker,â I mutter, rubbing my forehead. Â âFine. Â Fine. Whatâs the plan?â
The trio exchanges a surprised look, like they hadnât actually expected me to ever agree.
âYou can come to the engagement party as my date,â Drake blurts out suddenly. âAnd the three of us can get you an opening to talk to Liam.â
âDrakeâŚâ  Hana glances between Drake and I, suddenly hesitant.
âYou really want me as your date, Brat?â I ask, unable to keep the teasing note from my voice.
âAbsolutely,â he replies, his voice low and husky.
This is insane.
âWhen are we doing this?â
âTomorrow night,â Maxwell says. Â âDress code is black tie.â
I shove a post-it and a pen towards him. Â âWrite down the details.â
âThe party is in the ballroom of the hotel weâre staying at. You should meet me at my hotel room before the party starts,â Drake says, blushing faintly. Â âSo we can walk in together.â
My heart thumps loudly in my chest. Â âSure,â I manage to say, my mouth suddenly dry.
âWe should probably go,â Hana says, breaking the tension between me and Drake. Â âItâs late and tomorrowâs going to be a big day.â
âYeah,â I mumble in agreement.
I hug Maxwell and Hana before they hurry out of my office, leaving Drake to linger behind.
âYou need something else?â I ask, arching one eyebrow.
He takes a step closer to me. Â âFrom you? Â So many things.â
My eyes widen in surprise, and a frisson of excitement streaks through me. Â I raise my hand, cupping the side of his face. Â Drake sighs, nestling further into my touch. Â I run my thumb over his full lower lip as a number of sinful thoughts run through my mind.
âTell me,â I whisper. Â âTell me and Iâll give you anything you want.â
Drake nervously licks his lips, his tongue flicking out and touching my thumb. Â I groan, unable to stop myself, the warm, wet touch of his tongue sending every drop of blood in my body straight to my dick. Â Drake suddenly jerks away from me, breaking the spell.
âMaxwell and Hana are waiting,â he says, stumbling to the door on shaky legs. Â âSee you tomorrow.â
âSee youâŚâ
What the fuck was that?
I heave out a shuddering breath, staring at my closed office door. Â âWhat am I doing?â
I sit back down in my office chair, taking out my phone and automatically opening up a news app. Â
âCordonian Prince Visits New York as the Last Stop on Official Engagement Tourâ.  A full color picture of Liam and Madeline walking arm in arm accompanies the headline. They look happy. Â
Like they belong together.
âWhat is wrong with me?â I mutter, unable to take my eyes off of my phone screen. Â I trace Liamâs face with the tip of my finger, remembering the softness of his skin. His scent. Â The way his body felt against mine. Â The way his lips tasted. Â How his eyes would crinkle at the corners when he would smile.
âFuck!â I scream, throwing my phone. Â It shatters against the walls, bits of plastic flying through my office like shrapnel. Â I sweep my arm across my desk, scattering papers and bits of office paraphernalia.
RageâŚ
GriefâŚ
LoveâŚ
ConfusionâŚ
The emotions Iâve spent that past year bottling up swirl in my chest, refusing to be contained any longer.  I scream again, tearing the computer monitor from the top of my desk, and smashing it on the floor.  I slam my office chair against the wall, tearing a hole through the dry wall.  I tear pictures and framed certificates from the walls, dropping them to the floor and crushing them beneath my boots.  A visitorâs chair gets tossed against the door, cracking the smooth wooden finish.  When I run out of things to destroy, I crouch down in the far corner of my office, tugging on my hair as I breath heavily, using the pain as an anchor. Â
LiamâŚ
 The next eveningâŚ
âDamn it.â Â Drake stand in front of a mirror, struggling with his tie. Â A soft knock sounds on his hotel door, breaking his concentration. Â He sighs, giving up on his tie, and goes to answer the door.
âHey, Brat.â Â Callum leans against the door jamb, smirking languidly as his eyes lazily rove over Drakeâs body. Â âYou look good.â
Drakeâs brain short circuits as he takes in Callumâs appearance. Â Dressed in a form fitting black suit and black silk shirt, black gauges and septum ring his only jewelry, he oozes confidence and sex appeal. Â Unlike Drake, heâs opted not to wear a tie, leaving the top few buttons of his dress shirt undone and showing off a tantalizing strip of skin that Drake desperately wants to kiss.
âHaving some troubles?â Callum asks, gesturing to the undone tie hanging around Drakeâs neck.
Drake clears his throat, trying to fight the blush creeping over his cheeks. âYeah⌠I never really learned how to tie one of these things.â
âWant some help?â
Drake nods, sighing in relief.
âWhat do you say when you want something, Brat?â Â Callumâs voice is low and playful.
âHuh?â
âWhatâs the magic word?â
Drake narrows his eyes. Â âIâm not playing this game with you. Â Iâll figure it out on my own.â
Callum kicks the door closed and takes a step closer, gazing down into Drakeâs eyes as he takes hold of the tie around his neck.  âWhoâs playing?  All you have to do is say one little word⌠then Iâll give you what you want.â
 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drake blushes and clears his throat, growing increasingly flustered by my flirting.
Too easy.
âYou should quit teasing me,â he mutters.
âWho says Iâm teasing, Brat?â I purr, using the tie to tug him closer, until his chest is pressing against mine.
His eyes flit away momentarily before meeting mine once again. âCan I ask you something, Callum?â
âOf course,â I say, confused by the sudden subject change.
âIf we had met somewhere else⌠anywhere else.  At a club in New York, or in an airport, or at a party⌠If you hadnât been our waiter that night, and I hadnât been sitting next to Liam⌠ Do you think all of this⌠do you think it couldâve been different⌠between us?â
I blink, stunned into inaction by the question.
Would it have been different?
Drake stares up at me, beautiful brown eyes wide and beseeching as he waits for my answer. Â Drake, who had always been on my side, who had done his best to warn me about the dangers of the Cordonia court. Â Who had been there for me when Liam wasnât. Â Who let me be myself and liked me in spite of it. Â Drake, who stands before me open and vulnerable, laying his feelings bare for me to accept or reject.
I lean forward until our mouths are barely a hairsbreadth apart. Â âYeah, baby,â I murmur, our lips gently brushing together with every word I speak. Â âIt wouldâve been different. Â I think everything wouldâve been different.â

this email and the fact he was writing him literal poetry. like this is not really an email it is not really a letter it is almost entirely a piece of poetry that alex writes about the way that he loves him. the way he loves henry. henry with the great passion for queer poetry. henry who dreams of the anthology he didn't know he would get the chance to write yet. hello.
#okay randomly at the very last sentance i started second guessing myself that maybe it isn't actually canon that henry writes an anthology#of queer poetry post-canon and instead a widely accepted fandom headcanon that i have internalized instead#is that the case? lmk if that's the case#either way i made this post in the tone that it was canon so sorry if im wrong but even if i am this is canon TO ME#anyways this is possibly the most romantic book i have ever read#like serious real romance i love u rw&rb#rwrb#red white and royal blue#rw&rb#firstprince

It's another long one đŹđđđĽš. Oops.
Liam and Drake closely followed as the guards led Bastien into the depths of the Portavirian estate. The halls remained eerily quiet as the nobility slept; not a soul to be found other than those involved with Penelopeâs homicide investigation. Neither male spoke a word, but both reeled in this blindsiding revelation.
The betrayal Liam felt was like no other. Bastien was like a father to him, always around when he needed someone, but now he wondered if he ever knew him. Bastien saw him at his lowest and protected him at all costs, but somewhere along the way he changed; he couldnât determine when that shift happened or if his guard was that good of a deceiver from the start, and felt like a fool for not seeing his insubordination sooner. It didnât matter what he said, nor how much he pleaded; Liam already knew he was guilty, but didnât know the extent of his involvement.
So many unanswered questions ran rampant through his mind, but ultimately the one he cared about was, where is Riley? The scandal was no longer relevant; all that mattered was finding her and ensuring she was safe. Justice would be served to all who deserved it later but right now, she was the top priority. That wasnât a new revelation, but the urgency suddenly skyrocketed.
Liam did his best to stay afloat, but couldnât stop his mind from wandering. If Riley was still in the country, what did that mean? Was she being held hostage somewhere? Would a ransom note appear at some point? Is she even alive? The continuous spiral intensified and formed a vortex of frustration and confusion, enveloping him from the inside out. He wanted to scream and cry to the heavens, anything to relieve some of the never-ending tension slowly constricting his muscles. Every second that passed without knowing she was safe, he grew weaker, feeling control slip right through his fingertips. The never-ending vat of unanswered questions took their physical and mental toll on Liam as a monarch and man alike.
However, every ounce of strength that remained pushed him forward. The adrenaline coursing through his veins mindlessly carried him, as he and Drake walked in deafening silence.
They continued until they entered a dark room with a table and two chairs. The guards sat Bastien down on one side and secured shackles in place over his wrists, much to his displeasure. Liam took the seat that mirrored his, shooing the bystanders out as he did. Drake lingered close by, reeling in his feelings of hurt, betrayal, and anger. Bastien quieted, but his entire body went rigid after his former subordinates exited the room. Liam placed his hands on the table and stared at them for a long while, trying to slow the wild rush inside his mind.
He finally raised his head and spoke to Bastien in the flattest, calmest tone he could muster. âDo you know why youâre here?â
âI donât, sir.â
âFirst, letâs talk about Penelope. You and I both know she did not take her own life, so Iâm curious to know how you came to that conclusion.â
Bastien furrowed his brow. âNot to be forward, but she was literally hanging from the ceiling⌠We found a note in her room, and she had every reason to want to do it â considering she was about to be arrested.â
âRight⌠Speaking of that⌠I want to see that report again.â
âPardon?â
âThe report â the one that says Penelopeâs DNA was all over the murder weapon because honestly, I think youâre full of shit.â Liam hissed.
âI most certainly am not, sir. The documents are in the security office. If you remove these cuffs, I will gladly retrieve them.â Bastien confidently responded.
âThat wonât be necessary.â Liam knew if he told the truth, Olivia would find them and if she didnât, Bastien just caught himself in another lie. âNow, the next order of business â where were you the night of the jamboree? I donât remember seeing you at all.â
Bastien stiffened. âI was doing security checks around the estateââ
âIf you were doing security checks, howâd a rogue photographer make it in?â Drake interjected.
Bastien swallowed thickly, his gulp echoing in the silence. â... What?â
âYou heard what he said â answer the damn question.â Liam snapped.
âShe must haveââ
âShe?â Liam interrupted with a chortle. âThatâs funny â because I never mentioned gender. Do you know something that I donât?â
âI only took a guess â there was a fifty percent chance I would be correct.â Bastien calmly, yet firmly, answered with a dismissive shrug. âIâm not precisely sure how they breached the perimeter, but weâve been working to strengthen our units ever since.â
âRightâŚâ Liam nodded and forcefully clenched his jaw. It took every ounce of his restraint not to reach across the table and wrap his hands around Bastienâs throat because he couldnât trust a single word coming out of his mouth.
Drake spoke again before Liam could act on his intrusive thoughts. âWhat about the Apple Banquet? Where were you then?â
âI was with His Majesty while he spoke to the Beaumonts. Someone alerted me to the body, and I immediately sprung into the proper protocol.â
âNo, not when the maid was found â earlier. Where were you before that?â Liam demanded.
Bastien hesitated, but quickly fixed his features. âI was addressing an issue regarding Countess Madeleineâs security arrangements. Her old guard needed to take personal leave, so I had to find a suitable replacement.â
â... And she will vouch for you?â
âYes, sir.â
Liamâs frustration skyrocketed, as he didnât know how to take that statement. The number of people he could trust seemed to only shorten by the day, yet Madeleine was never present, nor even an honorable mention on that list; the time to trust her word was not amid this chaos.
âOkay, thenââ Liam started again, his agitation noticeably rising. âDo you know where Riley is?â
âI donât, sir. All I know is she returned to New York, andââ
âHow did you come to that conclusion, exactly? Because Iâve done some digging and found nothing to point to that. There are no traces of her after she left the jamboree whatsoever, Bastien; not flights, not vehicles â nothing.â
Bastien shifted in his seat. âMy information led me to that conclusion, Your Majesty.â
âWell, your information was wrong, and I canât help but feel you knew that all along, didnât you?â
âIâm not sure what youâre insinuating, butââ
âYou knew she didnât return to New York because you took her away, right? Is that how she made it out undetected? Or are you the one who assaulted her?â Liam thought back to his out-of-body experience and remembered the shadow lingering in front of her door. âOr did you stand guard while it happened? Is that it?â
âI did no such thing.â Bastien hastily replied, but cleared his throat and added, âWhat would I gain from any of this? Why would I give a damn who you choose?â
âThatâs kind of what Iâm wondering.â Drake inserted with a skeptical eye. âLook, Bas â I donât want to believe you had a hand in all this, but itâs not looking good, man.â
âWhat doesnât look good?â Bastien returned. âAll Iâve done is look for her! Iâve been trying to help you!â
âBullshit,â Liam seethed. âYou know something and I demand you tell me â right now.â
âI know nothing, sir. Iâve kept you updated on every piece of information uncovered.â
âYou need to understand something ââ Liam's breaths turned heavy and his face flushed every shade of crimson. âI am not fucking around. This is your final opportunity â if you know something and do not tell me, I will serve your head on a silver fucking platter at the next state function. Is that clear enough for you?â He rumbled through clenched teeth. The hand he raised to point at Bastien visibly trembled, as the dam broke and rage flowed freely through his body.
Bastienâs eyes widened, and he visibly swallowed. He quickly composed himself and softly answered, âI understand the circumstances have been â tense â for everyone involved. Youâve had a rough couple of weeks, and ââ
Liam slammed his fist onto the table and shot up from his seat. âDo NOT fucking patronize me!â He bellowed.
The door suddenly swung open and Olivia marched inside. In her hands, she carried a folder along with a few smaller items, but her facial expression was the picture-perfect image of unrestrained fury. âYou have a lot of explaining to do.â She rumbled as she bore her eyes into Bastien.
Never could she have imagined the man sitting before her would betray them in such a way, but now they had proof; undeniable, unavoidable, but yet â incredibly unsettling evidence.
Bastien audibly gulped as he recognized the documents and all traces of pigment in his complexion vanished. With so much going on, he didnât have the chance to dispose of everything properly. Liam and his group of friends moved faster than anticipated, and with their unexpected changes to the tour, he fell behind. The important information was extracted long ago, but what remained was still very incriminating â for Bastien.
Powerful forces expected him to pull off the impossible, but he was only one person â how was he supposed to fend off four people, plus a hired professional? Multiple ends that shouldâve received immediate attention didnât. Penelope ranked fairly high on that list, but his concerns got cast aside. His instructions were to deflect, deter, and stay silent regarding the madness; trust the process and your reward will be bountiful, they would say. Regardless, he didnât want to aid in this crazy scheme, but had no choice â they knew information about his past nobody should have uncovered, so he found himself backed into a corner.
But as Bastien stared at the evidence of his transgressions, he realized silence would no longer be an option. He knew one way or another at that moment he was as good as dead; the question was would it be at the hands of his seething monarch, the man he practically raised, or the people who made his life a living hell to begin with?
Olivia rifled through the things on the table until she found what she searched for. âRemember when Bastien told you he disposed of Rileyâs phone and her note?â She held both items up to show everyone along with her letter, noting how the guard immediately tucked his chin into his chest. âThe penmanship matches mine, meaning itâs the same as Penelopeâs.â
Liam forcefully clenched his jaw. âYou lied to me?â
âThatâs not all,â Olivia continued. âBastien told us Penelope is the one who killed the maid, but thatâs not true. Sure, the gum was hers â hair too â but the funny thing is that as it turns out, there are two sets of results on that knife.â
âThereâs notââ
Olivia cackled, cutting Bastien off. âDonât even try to lie. Iâm holding what appears to be the real results in my hands. What kind of moron keeps the original if heâs planning on cloning it to frame someone else? Fucking nitwit.â She shook her head, distaste lacing her words. âOf course, weâll have these confirmed for legitimacy, but considering who this one lists as the culprit, I can see why youâd want to cover this up.â
Liam snatched the documents from her and scanned them. His eyes widened as he went through the text, his jaw falling further and further the longer he read. Penelope's fingerprints were on the murder weapon, but unlike the last report he saw, this one went more in-depth. Her DNA might've been on the knife, but only one or two barely distinguishable smears on the blade itself belonged to her. However, the lab noted prominent traces from someone else located everywhere, but mostly on the handle, indicating that their person of interest should be whoever the second set of prints belonged to.
But Liam never received this report, and when he read who the database found as the owner of that second set of prints, he realized why he wasnât shown.
âIt was youâŚâ Liam gasped, finally tearing his attention off the file to center his glare on Bastien. âWhy?â
Bastien remained silent. He kept his gaze locked on the table, but the sweat forming on his brow wasnât unnoticed.
âWe know why, Liam. He was trying to shut her up because she spoke with us. And thatâs why he offed Penelope too â right, Bastien?â Olivia answered. âDispose of the loose ends before they can out you?â
âI did not harm Lady Penelope in any way,â Bastien stated with utmost determination, looking directly into Oliviaâs steely eyes as he did.
âBut you know who did, and you were working to bury that too, correct?â She quickly retorted, arching her brow.
Bastien clenched his jaw and looked away, refusing to speak, but he didnât need to â Olivia knew she was right.
âYou can deny those accusations all you want, but the next ones will be fairly difficult to talk yourself out of,â Olivia snapped as she produced another file and showed it to everyone.
âOperation Ghost?â That title caught Liamâs attention, and his mouth fell agape when he read it. He flipped through the papers inside and realized this was a meticulously planned mission, not a coincidence. While he spiraled deeper into the abyss, further away from reality, intentional carnage ran rampant within his court, and it was all a part of the elaborate plan from the beginning.
Someone plotted to hurt Riley and take her away from him, and that thought momentarily left him breathless.
âApparently so,â Olivia answered, remorse cracking through her stony features upon seeing Liamâs broken shock. Sheâd already searched the file and knew what lay ahead, but didnât know how he would react; it wouldnât be good regardless. âSomeone altered or destroyed most of this ââ She paused to throw a death glare at Bastien. âBut⌠Thereâs something elseâŚâ
âWhat is it?â Drake inquired as he and Liam took in her hesitancy, causing the hair on the nape of their necks to stand at attention.
With a heavy sigh, Olivia opened an envelope and produced a few smaller documents. She slammed them down on the table one at a time, directly in Bastienâs downward cast line of vision. âHereâs Rileyâs ID, her passport, and even her goddamn credit cards. Now tell me, Bastien â how did you think she got to New York without those?â
Liam snapped his head over to her. âWhat?!â He snatched the items off the table and stared at the photo on Rileyâs passport in his trembling hands, his heart rate taking flight.
His worst fears suddenly became reality, because he knew it wouldâve been impossible for her to get out of the country without identification. This confirmed that Ray was right; she never left Cordonia. Of everything he suspected of Bastien, the things he knew and worked to cover up completely blindsided Liam. It hurt him in a way he didnât know was possible, to be betrayed by someone he put every single ounce of his trust in.
Plus, had it not been for Olivia and Ray, he probably would have gotten away with it, too. The thought alone created a forceful swarm of guilt as Liam realized once again â this was what he ignored for so long. His breaths turned shallow as his mind took this new information and ran with it, automatically assuming the worst and with no signs to point in a different direction, he couldnât find any strings of hope no matter which way he looked.
The waves came crashing down, sending him into an instant spiral of equal parts devastation and fear. He swayed on his feet, but eventually lowered himself back into his chair, willing the wild rush to slow.
âWhat the fuck is this?!â Drake exclaimed, smoke nearly barreling out of his ears. âWhere is she?!â
âI donât know.â
âBullshit! She couldnât leave without this! Youâve been lying to us all along!â
âI did what I had to,â Bastien returned, his voice devoid of all emotion. âYou wouldnât understand.â
âWhat did you do to her, Bastien?!â Olivia reiterated. âYou canât deny you know something â if sheâs in danger, you need to tell us so we can find her!â
âI did nothing to her! All I did was escort her from the premises to the airport â thatâs it.â Bastien huffed, immediately regretting the slip-up, which earned him a unanimous gasp.
âWhat did you just say?â Liam rumbled with clenched fists, his daze of self-hatred shattering on the spot.
Bastien hesitated but realized it was useless to redact. âI said I escorted her from the premisesââ
Liam lunged for him without a second thought. He slammed his face into the table and held him there with all his might by the back of his skull. âSo you not only knew, but you fucking helped too?!â
âI did what I hadââ
âYou son of a bitch!â Liam yelled as he lifted Bastienâs head, only to bounce his cheek against the table with increased force. âI trusted you!â
Bastien tried to respond, but Liam swiftly continued. âYou have manipulated and made a fool of me for the LAST fucking time! I told you what Iâd do, yet you still lied to me? YOUR MONARCH?!â
Again, Bastien attempted to speak, but Liam wasnât quite finished. âThis WHOLE TIME⌠Youâve known â you fucking helped â but you continuously led me astray.â
âSirââ
âYOU DO NOT SPEAK OVER ME!â Liam bellowed, slamming Bastienâs head a third time.
A long silence passed as Liam securely held Bastien by the back of his neck, using more force with every passing second. He saw nothing but blood â everything that wouldâve gotten covered up ran through his mind; the murders, Riley, and what seemed to be a never-ending list of other possibilities.
Finally, Bastien timidly sliced through the tension. âSir, Iâm willing to tell you what I know and what Iâve done in exchange for safety. If you do not ensure my life, I will be dead within hours.â He pleaded, preparing to meet the table again. âYou have no reason to trust me now, but I will tell you what I canâŚâ He emphasized.
Liam met eyes with Olivia and Drake, a silent conversation taking place. In all honesty, nobody cared what happened to him after the fact; all that mattered right now was getting Bastien to talk by any means necessary. Whoever wanted him dead was more than welcome to finish the job, but not until after he confessed.
Liam released him with a shove but never said a word. Instead, he strode back to the chair across from Bastien and slowly retook his seat. When Liam lifted his head, the pure fury staring back at him slightly took Bastien aback. The patient presence heâd grown accustomed to was long gone, replaced by a man driven to the brink of insanity. Those typically bright baby blues were now dark, vicious, and wild â nearly animalistic as his stare tore through Bastien. It sent a shiver of dread down his spine and made him momentarily fearful of his usually calm and composed king. His head throbbed, but he knew that would not be the worst of what he received â regardless of whose hands he suffered from.
Liam intently held his gaze for a long moment, clenching and unclenching his jaw, but finally spoke in an eerily calm voice. â... Tell us.â
Bastien strode through the country jamboree with an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach as he recalled what would happen tonight. A suitor would be removed from the competition, with or without her cooperation. The trap was loaded and ready to go; all they needed was the prey â Riley.
Bastien located Penelope in the crowd and watched her approach Riley. She was deep into a conversation with Maxwell, but Penelope slipped in and played the part surprisingly well. He recognized her shaky hands even from afar, but she discreetly slipped at least half of the pharmaceuticals into Rileyâs drink, unbeknownst to her or Maxwell. He didnât think that part was necessary, but the force beyond insisted it was essential so they would force her to her room before everyone else.
After a time, Bastien observed as Riley hugged Maxwell and headed toward the estate. He quietly followed behind in the shadows as she walked through the deserted halls to her room, cursing the creaky floorboards underneath his feet, but the woman he trailed didnât notice a thing. Riley skipped, hummed a tune, and even did a little twirl; she had no cares in the world and had no clue that her perception of a fairy tale was about to be shattered.
As her door shut, Bastien took position outside, crossed his arms, and waited for the job to be completed. Everyone else remained at the party outside; it was his assignment to ensure the vicinity stayed clear. He knew who occupied the room neighboring hers, which only fueled the need to get this done and over with as quickly and smoothly as possible.
People spoke behind the door â the voices escalating by the second â but Bastien made it a point to drown them out. The situation could go one of two ways, depending on Riley's cooperation, and it didn't take long for him to realize she chose the hard way. Although he found it difficult to ignore her pleas for help, his allegiance aligned elsewhere.
After a time, a few gentlemen approached but Bastien allowed them access, as he expected them. He didnât know who they were, just that they would deal with ârelocatingâ Tariq; his task was Riley. One had jet-black hair, while the other donned a baseball cap. They wore a matching dark ensemble, aside from the hat and one having thick, circular lens glasses. A holster of weapons surrounded their belts, making the hair on his arms stiffen. The pair went inside without a word, but Bastien felt their eyes on him as they entered.
The deafening silence hung for what felt like centuries, but eventually, they re-emerged with their cargo in tow.
âUnhand me this instant!â Tariq demanded as the muscles dragged him away.
âNot a chance, fancy boy.â The man with glasses snickered. âGot a special place for you.â
âI did what I was supposed to do!â Tariq pleaded, his tone changing once he realized the seriousness of his situation. âPlease â have some compassion!â
âNo can do. Bossâs orders were strict â toss you in a hole and throw those God-awful loafers into the ocean.â The dark-haired male snapped his fingers before adding, âI can leave the shoes on if youâd prefer â put some cement in them and send you both on a journey to the bottom of the Mediterranean.â His delight showed brightly, causing Bastienâs pulse rate to skyrocket.
Tariq suddenly planted his feet firmly on the ground. âDO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?! OR WHO MY FATHER IS?â He bellowed. âYou wonât get away with this â I WILL ENSURE THAT YOUââ
Out of nowhere, the male with the ball cap hit him with the butt of his pistol, silencing his tirade. Tariq slumped to the floor with his eyes rolled back, blood gushing from his nose in an instant.
âThank you, Claudius. I couldnât stomach another second of his useless ranting.â
âYou and I both.â
âGet him loaded up â weâre on a schedule and need to move.â Claudius hefted Tariq on his shoulder with ease and quickly left out the servantsâ exit. As he disappeared, the remaining man shifted his attention to Bastien. âSo⌠Youâre prepared to handle the fallout?â
âOf course.â He confidently responded.
âAre you sure? Because I don't think you understand how messy this situation could get in the future⌠And honestly? If the boss hadnât enlisted little Miss Penny, this entire operation wouldâve crashed and burned before it even took off.â He rolled his eyes. âYou thought she would agree to this just for a spot beside the queen?â
âIt might surprise you what people will do to get ahead around here.â
âYes, but theyâre willing to execute better with a little â added motivation.â He flashed a wide, sinister smile. âYou should know better than anyoneâŚâ
Bastien swallowed thickly, his entire body going rigid. âIâm not sure what youâre referencing.â
âOf course not.â He snickered. âI donât blame you â I wouldnât want anyone to know youâre the one who murââ
Bastien held a hand up. âThatâs enough.â He spat out.
The maleâs smile widened. âAs I said, people execute better with added motivation.â He patted Bastienâs shoulder with a little too much force.
âWas there a point to this?â Bastien rumbled through clenched teeth, shaking off the manâs palm.
âI just wanted to make sure itâs one hundred percent clear â you need to ensure anything regarding this stays buried. If too many people ask the right questions before we reach the finish line and the boss has to get involved again⌠Well ââ He grinned, baring his teeth. âThatâd just be a shame, wouldnât it?â
A chill shot down the length of Bastienâs spine. âWhat is that supposed to mean? Are you threatening me?â
âYou may not be the brightest crayon in the box, but youâre not that stupid â you know what will happen.â He responded, amusement written on his cold features. His almond eyes deepened to black, leaving Bastien momentarily speechless.
âIâm certain that wonât be necessary.â Bastien confidently answered after he regained his composure. His companion nodded with an eerie smirk but casually lingered around the door. âIs there something else I can do for you?â
âI was just wondering about Lady Riley⌠Where youâre planning on sending her since you received the â opportunity to handle her?â He nonchalantly inquired, acting as disinterested as possible. âSuch a great honor you have⌠One I practically begged for.â
âThe States, where she came from.â Bastienâs direction was to ship her back to New York as discreetly as possible. Even though the plan took a drastic turn, that was the one constant that couldn't change because otherwise, they would out themselves for taking the reins and disobeying a direct order. She would land on her feet, start a new life, and forget all about Cordonia. Liam would surely want to search for her, but all Bastien had to do was stall until the coronation, when their cover for removing Riley would come to light.
âI see, I see⌠Well, hopefully, that works out for her.â He smiled, the sight raising goosebumps on Bastienâs arms.
Before Bastien could respond, the door creaked open, and a hooded presence strode out. He paid Bastien no mind, instead focusing on the dark-haired male. âLet us vacate. The party is nearly over, and we have tremendous amounts of work ahead of us if we want to pull this off.â
âWhat about the court? We canât go back to ââ
âDo not fret, Anton⌠We have a plan⌠Trust the process; this is only the beginning. Everything will work out as it should in due time, but we must move â now.â
The pair quickly walked away, but not before Bastien heard Anton loudly whisper, âAbout that â pit-stopâŚâ to his companion.
Bastien momentarily pondered that statement, but shook off the queasiness inside his stomach, concluding they must be referring to Tariq. As he stared at Rileyâs door, a brief flicker of guilt traveled through him. Riley did nothing wrong, and he knew that, but this is the task he regretfully accepted. It was not a personal vendetta, by any means, but this clueless woman aimlessly landed herself in the middle of the nobility; she didnât understand the untold, dark side of the court and its inhabitants, but would learn on this day.
Bastien cautiously opened the door and entered to find Riley on the edge of her bed, cradling her side. She snapped her head over to him as she heard his footsteps, and her eyes filled to the brim with tears when she met his gaze. He once again fought a wave of remorse at seeing her hopeful expression, knowing he was not the knight in shining armor she assumed he was.
âBastien, youâyou have to help me⌠PleaseâŚâ Riley croaked. Her words came out slightly slurred, although it surprised him that the earlier sedatives hadnât taken a harder effect.
âIâm going to, Lady Riley. First, I need to ensure youâre not carrying anything on you.â
Bastien assisted Riley to a standing position, which she slowly did without question. He didnât know exactly what transpired, but she had a gash on her side, blood soaking through the thin hoodie she wore. With her permission, he checked the wounds, none of which were bad enough to seek immediate medical attention. Her face was littered with cuts, surely bruises to follow with time, as one of her cheeks was already tinted with a light purple. He started at her shoulders and patted down to her abdomen, but stopped when he felt something in her pocket and pulled out her phone. He nonchalantly slipped the device into his jacket, but despite his best efforts, Riley watched him do it.
âThat is my property! You canât take that!â She protested.
âIâm afraid I can⌠You are to leave completely empty-handed. Now, we have to get going â you have a flight to catch.â Bastien placed a hand on Rileyâs arm to lead her away.
Riley firmly planted her feet in place, shaking away his grip. âDonât do this, Bastien!â
âYou have no choice in this matter and weâre on a time limit,â Bastien replied as he checked his watch.
âWhat about all my stuff?â
âAs I said, empty-handed.â He didnât understand that part either, but concluded it was easier to shove her on a plane with no items to accompany her.
âOn whose authority?!â Riley exclaimed. When he didnât answer, she reiterated, âWho told you to do this to me, Bastien?!â
âThat is confidential information.â
Riley snorted, her frustration written all over her face. âBullshit! At least be man enough to tell me!â
âFine. You want to know who did it?â He held her glare, letting the tension linger, but finally answered, âIt was Liam.â
Riley stepped away as if she took a blow to the gut, but her devastation quickly morphed into the polar opposite.
Riley laughed; hard enough that tears spilled down her cheeks. âYou expect me to believe that? Liam? Of all people?â She shook her head, slightly bouncing from her chuckles. âYou think Iâm that naĂŻve and stupid?â
âBelieve what you will, that matters not to me but my instructions were simple, so we must get moving.â He stated, very matter-of-factly.
âBastien,â Riley pleaded, any signs of amusement suddenly disappearing. âDonât do this. Iâll just â I donât know!â She cried, anxiety prominent in her features. âI wonât say anything to anyone â I swear on my grandmotherâs life! Orâor we can tell Liam! Whatever got you wrapped up in this, he will understand.â She reasoned. âPlease â you donât have to conform. We can find a way out of this together.â
Bastien considered it for a second, but ultimately gave Riley a sad smile and nudged her toward the door. Tears flowed freely down her cheeks, but he remained firm. He quickly dropped her phone and the pre-written note he received inside her bedside table and went to the threshold, stepping over shards of glass from a broken planter and a bloodied garment.
Leaving her phone there meant it would be an immediate dead end for Liam and her sponsors. He would want to call her â possibly track her â but this ensured that door was closed before it could even be opened. It was a distraction tactic to keep the prince occupied until his reason for her departure would present itself to him, where hopefully, he would drop the matter for good.
Bastien held her stare for a moment before he cleared his throat, emphasizing the need to move. Riley hung her head and eventually slowly walked out the door, quietly sobbing as she did.
Bastien led her down the long hallway toward the servantsâ exit, as their SUV waited close by. Riley was incredibly unsteady on her feet, whether it was from the earlier medication or her injuries, he wasnât sure, but he held his hand out to steady her wobbly steps on multiple occasions. He glanced back and locked eyes with the maid he summoned to clean the area, and even with his dark sunglasses, he still spotted her apprehension. The interaction was brief as he and Riley reached the end of the hallway, but something in his gut said he would have to deal with that later.
Assisting Riley down the stairs turned out to be tricky, as she was in an incredible amount of pain. By the end, he hoisted her over his shoulder and carried her the rest of the way down. She didnât yell or scream, not that it would have mattered if she tried; the party still âragedâ in the opposite direction, leaving the vicinity barren of wandering ears. If she got combative he had a plan for that as well, but was glad she opted to cooperate, instead of throwing a tantrum and meeting a fate similar to Tariq.
He sat her on her feet when they emerged outside and escorted her to the vehicle, quickly securing her inside. He used no restraints, but she didnât resist one bit; almost as if sheâd accepted her fate, or her body just didnât have the strength to fight back. There were no remnants of Tariq or anyone else, but Bastien moved with fire under his feet as if someone lurked right around the corner.
Within the blink of an eye, they were at the airport, where Bastien unloaded her from the back of the car. The entire ride he heard Rileyâs sniffles from the backseat, but he drove faster â to unload this package and hopefully, this would be a straightforward operation. Once she was out of the vehicle his job should be done, unless too many questions arose.
Bastien parked toward the back of the abandoned parking lot so the only thing on security footage would be Riley entering the airport. With his connections, he knew exactly where the cameras were and discreetly slipped into a blind spot. Riley could hardly stand as he pulled her from the vehicle, but that was not his concern.
He did his part â all she had to do was walk inside and leave Cordonia forever.
He shoved a small envelope into her hands and said, âHere is your ID, passport, credit cards, and a ticket to New York. Itâs been a pleasure, Lady Riley.â And with that, Bastien turned on his heel and returned to his vehicle, speeding away before he could second guess his decision.
He glanced back in the rearview mirror and saw the silhouette of a woman standing there disoriented, wounded, alone, terrified, and defenseless, but quickly averted his gaze, centering on the road. He nearly pushed his foot through the floorboard to get away faster, but bile rose into the back of his throat as a chilling realization sat in; he didnât know how, but this was far from over, and the chances of him making it to see his next birthday just substantially dwindled.
âI assumed she boarded the plane, but I later received her identification and credit cards in a sealed envelope from an unidentifiable source. I tried to help her⌠I really didâŚâ Bastien finished with his head bowed.
âNo, you sure as shit did not!â Drake bellowed, a mix of fury and shock written on his features. âI canât believe you!â
Bastien flinched. âI did what I had to doââ
âWhere is she, then? Because she never got on that fucking plane, Bastien!â Olivia hollered.
âI donât know! I told you everything I know about it! I tried to find out, but I canât!â
âThis is fucking unreal.â Drake shook his head and scoffed. âYou expect me to believe you really donât know? You have her ID! Her goddamn passport!â
Bastien forcefully clenched his jaw. âI received them before the tour in a sealed envelope. I donât know where it came from and I can't trace its origin.â
Drake scowled. âWeâre supposed to believe that?â He looked away and rubbed a hand down his face, his frustration steadily rising. âLetâs say I do â you chose to keep that to yourself? You didnât think that was worth mentioning when we opened an investigation into her goddamned disappearance?!â He over-enunciated, sarcasm dripping off every syllable.
âWhat was I supposed to do, Drake?!â Bastien responded, but couldnât fathom meeting his eyes for even a brief second.
âNot be a spineless piece of shit, for one,â Olivia answered. âFor two, you couldâve refused to cooperate from the beginning. Or, told the truth, regardless of what wouldâve happened to you then⌠Or, made sure she got on the plane, at least. You drugged her and left her for dead, Bastien! Who knows where sheâs at by now?! Do you realize how much time weâve wasted because of you?!â
âI did not drug her or leave her for deadââ
âBut you didnât fucking stop it either, and thatâs just as damning in my eyes,â Drake spoke in a bland, empty voice as he tried to comprehend this betrayal. âI donât know what happened to you, but youâre not the man I used to look up to, not anymore⌠I canât believe you did this and continuously lied to us about it!â
Bastien slouched. âI never liedââ
âBullshit! Youâve done nothing but lie! Youâve gotta stop and tell us the truth for once!â
âI told you everything I know, everything Iâve done. I killed the maid and had every intention of Lady Penelope taking the fall â Iâve led you astray and tampered with evidence â I admit it.â
âI donât care about any of that shit right now!â Drake shouted. âWe wanna know what you did with Brooks, Bastien.â
Bastien sighed. âDrake, I told you, I donât know where sheâs at! She was supposed to go inside and board the plane!â
âBut you didnât wait and ensure she did, at least?â Olivia asked with an arched brow.
âI didnât think I needed to! After what I heard coming out of that room, I assumed she would run inside to get away⌠If anyone knows, itâs probably that Anton character!â
âAntonâŚâ Olivia repeated, her curiosity peaking. âWhat do you know about him? And the other guy? Claudius?â
âAbsolutely nothing. Iâd never seen them before and havenât since. All I know is they were in charge of relocating Tariq.â
âAnd you donât know where that is, either?â
âNo, I donât. I didnât ask questions, and I wasnât told. I ran their names in the system to see if I could figure anything out, but theyâre ghosts â there arenât even medical records with either name on it.â
Olivia scoffed. âSo, why do it, then?â
âI have my reasonsâŚâ He finally gathered the courage to take a peek in Drake's direction, but when he spotted the wild blaze of fire in his eyes, swiftly glanced away.
âYeah⌠OkayâŚâ Olivia indignantly laughed. âSo was this your idea, or were you working under someone elseâs watch?â He didnât reply, but she and Drake noticed his shoulders tense. âThatâs all the answer I need. So who is it? Whoâs pulling the strings here?â
Bastien shook his head. âThat I canât tell you.â
âYouâre already a dead man no matter which way you look at it, so you may as well just tell us. If you do, there is the tiniest chance that you may receive mercy,â Olivia growled as her hand instinctively reached for the dagger hidden in her waistband.
âIâm aware of that, but I cannot tell you.â
âBas, you need to fuckingââ
âDamn it, Drake, I canât!â Bastien shouted. He knew the pain Drake felt was nothing compared to what heâd feel if he knew the truth, but he refused to open that can of worms.
Liam remained eerily quiet as he listened to Bastien retell the events of that night. To say he was fuming would be the understatement of the millennium. Bastienâs continuous misleading and knowledge of Riley being drugged, assaulted, and potentially still in Cordonia sent Liam overboard. Not to mention, he basically left her for dead in a parking lot. Bastien did all of that; he may not have physically harmed her himself, but he stood guard, let it happen, and actively worked to cover it up, making Liam physically sick to his stomach.
The all-consuming rage he tried to control reached its boiling point. He was no longer asking nicely â he was demanding.
Liam slowly stood from his chair, the loud screech halting the surrounding bickering. He leaned over the table on his knuckles and positioned himself at eye level with his former guard. âYou told her that I did it?â
Bastienâs eyes spread eagle. âI just needed to get her out of the door⌠I assumed that would get her to leave willingly, but she didnât believe a word I said.â
Liam indignantly laughed, the sound sending waves of uncertainty through everyone in the room. âSo it wasnât enough to physically break her â you had to pile emotional pain on top, too?â
âSir, she did not believe me,â Bastien reasoned. âShe knew you would never do such a thing. It was only a last-ditch attempt on my part to get her out.â
Liam mindlessly nodded, ignoring the new wave of dread filling his veins. Heâd convinced himself even through all this madness, when they reached the bottom of this intricate web, there was still a slight chance Riley could love him back, but that hope burst into flames instantaneously. Regardless of whether she believed the lie, he was more determined than ever to find her, ensure her safety, and make sure she knew he played no part in this. He had no intentions of hiding his prolonged negligence of the situation from her, but wasnât willing to let her hate him over something he had no part of.
Liam took a deep, steadying breath and spoke in a low, timbre rumble. âIâm ordering you to tell me who orchestrated all this, Bastien â you owe me that much.â
Bastien remained silent for a long moment as he held his monarchâs intent gaze. Eventually, he sat back in his chair and broke eye contact while pursing his lips together. âDamn it, tell me!â Liam shouted, his voice echoing against the concrete walls.
Bastien hesitated, as he quickly planned his path from here. The potential to get caught was always there, and he thought extensively about what he would do and who to say in this situation. His secrets fueled a small portion of his decision, but the majority centered around fear. He wouldnât be safe either way but would take his punishment from the crown. Aside from keeping his skeletons inside the closet, to defy the â others â would essentially put nails in his coffin, just waiting to be hammered in. Heâd seen firsthand the carnage they were capable of; a couple of treason charges were nothing in comparison.
But if he pointed them in the right direction, it wouldn't be him outing the culprit.
The tension lingered but right when Olivia opened her mouth to push, Bastien quietly answered, âIt was your fatherâŚâ
The room went silent; not a single breath to be heard. Olivia took in the steadfast determination in Bastienâs features and knew for once â he wasnât lying. And it made some sense; Bastien was purely manpower, not an active brain contributing, and Constantine had the power to force him into anything. However, she instantly knew the former monarch was not the person behind that door with Riley.
Constantine was in high demand and there was no way he couldâve slipped away from the jamboree that early unnoticed. Olivia recalled that night, and to her knowledge, Constantine retired at the same time as Liam. Plus, if they believed Liamâs out-of-body experience to be reality, Constantine was right beside him while the attack took place.
She believed him but also realized while he told the truth, he didnât tell all of it. There was more to the story, and she intended to get any and every ounce of information out of him, no matter what it took.
Olivia opened her mouth to address Bastien, but Liam beat her to it. âMy father?â He repeated, confusion showcased brightly on his face.
âYes, sir,â Bastien softly spoke. âI know that may be hard for you to hear, butââ
âShut the fuck up!â Liam suddenly bellowed as his shock quickly morphed into dangerous fury. âYouâre still trying to lie?!â
Bastienâs eyes widened. âI swear to you â heâs the one who told me to send her back to New York.â
Liam shook his head, his face reddening with every sullen breath. âNo⌠Youâre just trying to cover your own ass, thatâs it!â
Bastien sighed. âI donât expect you to believe me, but that is the truth. Your father is the one whoââ
Liam paced the small area, his racing thoughts spiraling out of control. âMy father would not do this, regardless of how strongly he felt about it. This is fucking evil and deranged â he is a lot of things, but he would never do something like this to me.â He seethed. âSo I will ask you one final time â who was it?â
Silence commenced once more, but Bastien eventually answered. âI told you who it was. If you choose not to believe me, thatâs your prerogative. I did what he ordered me to do.â
Fast as lightning, Liam brought his fist up and connected with Bastienâs jaw. He went around the table and hit him again, and again, until Bastien was on his knees with his head dangling in between his still cuffed hands. Liam didnât care if he killed him or not at that moment; all that mattered was exacting revenge on behalf of his beloved, even if she wasnât there to witness it. The monarch checked out, replaced by a vicious beast â a starved one, at that.
Liam saw nothing except Rileyâs face, the sound of her cries from his out-of-body experience echoing in his mind. His hand throbbed as he relentlessly took his frustrations out on Bastien, but he barely felt it because of the pure hatred and adrenaline pumping through his veins.
Olivia and Drake watched, exchanging worried glances as Liam continued his assault. Both felt incredible amounts of anger toward Bastien, but they saw the bits of truth. Liam might not want to believe it, but Constantine made the most sense.
However, Olivia wholeheartedly believed Constantine was not the one in that room. He may have ordered Bastien to engage, but deep down she knew he was not the one calling the shots that night. As Liam continued to pummel him, she had half a mind to stop him, but the person taking out his anger on his crumpled guard was not her childhood friend, and even she was hesitant to interfere.
It was Drake who finally intervened, laying a firm hand on his shoulder. âLiâŚâ When Liam shook him off, he tried again with more force. âLiam!â
âGet your fucking hands off of me!â Liam shouted, quickly returning to his mission. Every bone that snapped underneath his fist soothed a portion of his soul, but he wasnât willing to stop until Bastien felt even a small portion of the pain enveloping his entire being.
The door crept open and Leo went to step inside, Maxwell close behind, but halted when he spotted a bloodied and battered Bastien dangling from the side of the table. Liam continued his attack, completely oblivious to the additional presences in the room. Leo noticed the mixed expressions from Olivia and Drake and quickly pieced a vague conclusion together. Never in his life did he think Bastien could be capable of such atrocities, but clearly they found something to tie him to it.
Leo stepped toward Liam and timidly tapped his shoulder to gather his attention. âLi, we found Penelope. She was headed to the palace with orders for incineration upon arrival, but we stopped it and she should be back soon. I talked with Landon and Emmaline and theyâve agreed to send her wherever you see fit for autopsy. Ray recommended a specialist, but I wanted your input before I started the process.â
Liam finally stopped his assault and stared down at Bastienâs crumpled body with labored breaths. âThe amount of which youâre willing to go to bury this is ridiculous! WHO could be that important that you would do all this â risk EVERYTHING for?!â He bellowed, his voice booming against the walls.
Bastien never answered, whether by choice or from his injuries, but a silence took over as Liam really pondered that question for a moment. This wasnât just some measly scandal anymore; this was an extensive operation concocted to remove the top competitors and ensure he married Madeleine. At first assumption, it would be easy to point a finger at Madeleine herself, but Bastien held no allegiance to her, and the two hardly spoke before the start of the engagement tour. She held no power over him and had no way to get him to bend to her will.
And that was simply too easy â right?
Bastienâs involvement suddenly narrowed down the potential list of suspects, as Liam knew there was a very short number of people he would have no choice but to obey. Despite everything, he didnât want to believe Bastien willingly did all of this. He expressed feeling some kind of remorse while it was happening, but he still aided and lied about it afterward, making his guilt irrelevant.
He had no reason to trust Bastien, but the more he thought about it, the more his heart accepted the tale.
The betrayal from his former guard was a lot to process, but knowing who could have ultimately constructed the whole thing shredded him into a million tiny pieces. Half of him was ready to unleash a wrath like no other, while the other half wanted to crumple into a ball and cry. His already fragile heart couldn't take the strain; right when he thought this situation couldn't get worse, it did. Someone so close forcefully took something so precious, knowing how much Riley meant to him, and it completely blindsided him.
His back hit the wall and he slid down it, clutching his chest. Leo and Drake quickly moved to catch him, thinking he was having another episode, but Liam shook them off. As everyone took in his dejection, they realized he accepted who their next subject of questioning would be.
âLeoâŚâ Liam swallowed thickly, his breaths rapid and labored. âTell me â tell me our father wouldnât do this⌠Heâs not evil, just hard-headed â right?â
Leo winced. âI⌠I wish I could, Li, butâŚâ He didnât want to believe it but with Constantineâs infatuation with the throne, he couldnât put it past him. Their father was never malicious, but he had a control problem regarding the crown; Leo knew firsthand.
But would he go this far?
Liam let out a forceful huff of air and ran his hands down his face, trying and failing to keep his tears at bay. âI â I thought it was bad that Bastien betrayed me, but â him? Why would he do this?â
âI want to answer that, Liam, but Iâm not the person to ask⌠One way or another, you know we have to confront himâŚâ
Liam grimly nodded. âI know⌠I just â what if he is the one who did all of this? What am I supposed to do then, Leo?â
Leo remained silent for a long moment, gathering his thoughts, but was to no avail, as he genuinely didnât have an answer. âI donât know, Liam⌠I really donâtâŚâ

All That She Wants Chapter 5: Consequences
Series: All That She Wants
Fandom: The Royal Romance
Pairings: Riley x Liam, Riley x Drake, Liam x Olivia
Word Count: 1,094
Rating: M
Warnings for this chapter: none
My other stuff: Master List.
Riley stared down at the plastic stick in her hands as a myriad of feelings washed over her.
Another negative test.
How? It had been 6 months since sheâd first set her sights on Drake. They had been sleeping together regularly ever since.
Frequently even.
Disappointment and disbelief were the first emotions. She had conceived Ellie on her honeymoon with Liam. Xander had taken only two months of trying.
Frustration and relief were an odd combination, revealing her conflicted motives. Her original goal of procreation was being thwarted, and that was frustrating.
But another negative result meant she would have to keep sleeping with Drake. Not just sleeping with him, but basically dating him, per the arrangement she had agreed to.
She hadnât meant to, but she found herself enjoying the dating part. It felt good to be wanted, to be pursued, wooed, romanced, valued.
Lost in her thoughts, she didnât hear him until he was right behind her. âWhat are you doing?â
Her body jolted as awareness of her surroundings rushed back in. âLiam! I thought you had meetings all morning!â
âI did. But the Duke of Rothsford spilled his coffee on me and I came back up to change.â Astonishment crept into his voice. âIs that a pregnancy test?â
âItâs none of your business, is what it is!â She snapped as she moved her hand behind her back.
âOh, I think itâs most certainly my business if my wife, whom I havenât had sex with in months, is taking a pregnancy test!â
âTry a year and a half, Liam!â she bit back furiously.
He looked momentarily taken aback. âHas it been that long?â
âYes!â She hated the tears that gathered in her eyes.
Liam faltered for a moment. He looked at her with compassion, his hand reached out toward her in a comforting gesture but froze halfway there. His voice was icy as he demanded, âWhy are you taking a pregnancy test?â
âI wanted to see if I was pregnant, Liam, thatâs why!â
âSo, youâre having an affair?â
She gaped at him, the anger in his tone confusing her. âYou literally told me that if I wanted another baby, to find someone else to be the father!â
âThat was hyperbole, Riley!â Liam was shaking with barely restrained fury. âThe Queen of Cordonia canât just have another manâs baby!â
âOh, but you can sleep with Olivia and ignore your wife, and thatâs fine?â
âIââ
âExactly. Youâre a hypocrite, Liam. What if your mistress got pregnant? Then what?â
âDonât be ridiculous. Liv doesnât even want children! She took the necessary precautions to prevent that years ago!â
âWow.â Riley shook her head as anger replaced all the despair and sadness she usually felt when confronted with her husbandâs infidelity. âYou didnât even try to deny it.â
His shoulders slumped as his fury abated. âIâm sorry, Riley. You deserve better than Iâve given you. I know that.â
âDid you ever love me?â
âI do love you, Riley. Things with Liv and I areâŚ. complicated.â
âNo, Liam, you donât love me. If you loved me, you wouldnât have shut me out. Something changed somewhere along the way, and you didnât bother to let me know.â
âIâm not disputing that things changed. Our marriage becameâŚstale.â
She wasnât sure which emotion was more prevalent as she took in his assessment of their relationship. There was an ample amount of rage tempered by an overabundance of grief.
She had never stopped loving him. Had never stopped trying.
But the unvarnished truth was that he had left their marriage, at least emotionally, long ago, and there was nothing she could do about it.
For the first time since she had said I do, she admitted to herself that this was not the fairytale they had sold to the press. This was not her happily ever after and Liam was not her prince charming. They had been living a lie from the moment he proposed.
âWhy didnât you just marry her in the first place?â she asked bitterly.
âI just told youâŚ. she refused to have children. I needed an heir.â
âSo, you married me for my uterus?â
A defensive note crept into his voice. âYou knew the terms. You agreedââ
âI agreed to the marriage terms because I loved you, you fucking unbelievable bastard!â
âRiley, youâre upset. I understand. But once you calm downââ
âNo.â
âNo? No, what?â
âNo, to whatever is about to come out of your mouth. Iâm done worrying about whatâs best for you! Itâs my turn, Liam!â
âWhat does that mean?â
âIt means you have three choices. Either give me a baby, let someone else give me a baby, or letâs just get divorced and Iâll do as I damn well please.â
âRiley, we canât justââ
âThose are your choices. Even the king canât force someone to stay married to him against her will. Just imagine the scandal that would cause!â
He struggled to maintain his composure when what he wanted to do was throw things, yell, lock her in the room, and forbid her to leave it. Instead, he took a steadying breath and counted silently to ten before he spoke. âWe said forever, Riley.â
âYou promised to love me, Liam.â
âWho is it?â
âExcuse me?â
His voice was tight as he searched her face for answers. âWho are you sleeping with? Who is stabbing his king in the back?â
For the first time in their entire marriage, Riley had the upper hand. She gave him a self-satisfied smirk as she tossed the plastic stick into the waste bin. She crossed the room to the door, opened it, then turned back to face him. âYou have two days to decide which option pleases you most, my king.â Then she was gone.
âSon of a bitch!â Liam picked up the nearest object and hurled it at the door that had just closed.
Glass shattered against the wood, as water and petals exploded outward.
Who the fuck had been sending her flowers?
He had barely noticed the vases of fresh-cut blooms that had changed every few days, assuming housekeeping had been putting them there to brighten the room. Now the certainty that someone was not just fucking his wife but romancing her took hold.
Something had to be done. A decision had to be made, and it had to be made quickly.
He pulled out his phone and quickly punched in Oliviaâs number. âWe have an urgent matter to discuss. I need you to drop whatever youâre doing and come to the palace immediately.â

đĽđĽđĽđĽđĽđĽđĽđĽđĽđĽđĽđĽđĽđĽđĽ
Liam had promised Savannah that he won't meet Fabian without her permission but he couldn't control himself. âI am only going to watch from a distance. I am not meeting him so technically I am keeping my word.â he thinks. And so when Savannah walks down to Fabian's day care he discreetly follows her.
He eagerly waits behind the dense hedge of the Mastic tree, for Savannah to come out of the day care. Liam's heart soars high at the first sight of his son. He is mesmerized at the sight of his own miniature form trotting down along with a grown up Savannah. He steps back to keep away from them. They cross over, Fabian busy narrating the events of the day to his mother. He picks up on their conversation. Fabian is explaining, â....I told her it's simply milk, cream and plain vanilla, isn't it mother?â Savannah nods. Fabian punches his fist in air. âI knew it. I couldn't be wrong with my favourite drink.â
âHe likes Vanilla, just like me!â Liam is excited on discovering a tiniest detail about his son. He wants to know more but he has to patiently wait for Savannahâs call. He starts walking back to his hotel. Seeing Fabian with Savannah takes his mind to the memories of yesteryears when he was with his motherâŚ..
Little Liam walked with a skip to his mother. She could see through his focused eyes that he had an agenda in his mind. He stopped a few steps away from her and stood with his arms pushed back, his fingers wrapped tightly around each other behind his back.
âMother, when are we going to visit Drakeâs place?â He asked, hiding his nervousness.
âAfter two days my son,â Eleanor replied wondering where his thoughts are wavering. âwhy?â
âOh, it is nothing, mother.â Liam tried to make it light.
Eleanor pulled him to her holding both his arms. âI can see you are pretty excited about something. What is going on in that smart head of yours?â
He brought his hands ahead, fidgeting with Eleanorâs scarf. Coyly, he raised his eyes to her. âI⌠I am fond of the vanilla shake that Drakeâs mom whips.â
âAahaan ! So you want to visit them just for that milkshake. I bet I can make one tooâ Eleanor teased.
Liam jerked back. âNot just any milk shake, mother. Itâs Biancaâs special vanilla milkshake. Besides, playing around their cozy little rooms with Savannah.â He tried reasoning.
âI never knew you like to play with that little girl.â
âI meant Drake and Savannah.â Liam added.
âHmm. So Drake and Savannah?â
âAnd Vanilla shake.â Liam reminded her.
âAnd the vanilla shake.â Eleanor repeated. âYou are sure you are not hiding anything else ?â
âNo mother, itâs Vanilla milkshake.â Liam laughed shyly.
Savannahâs home. Lozzi village, Corsica.
Savannah had narrated many bedtime stories about King Liam to Fabian and she had narrated many stories about his father though she was always careful not to overlap any of those. But today everything seems difficult. She tries to speak to Fabian throughout the day and each time she finds herself beating around the bush. She always thought she would be ready and exhilarated to introduce Fabian to his father. Now she is at a loss of words.
After dinner, Fabian makes his bed with his mother and gets under the covers. Savannah keeps roaming around his room still pondering where to start.
âMom?â
âYes, baby.â
âAre you worried about something?â
She stops replacing things idly and looks at him, âNot exactly, dear.â
âDid I do something wrong?â
Savannah leaves everything aside and moves towards his bed to sit beside him. âYou didn'tâŚWhy would you say that?â
âBecause I can see you picking up the same things and placing them back again, going round and round the room. You do that when something is bothering you.â
âOh Fabian!â Savannah bends down to place a kiss on his forehead. âYou are such a sweetheart . Always so observant and caring.â âJust like your fatherâ, she thinks.
âDoes this mean there is something nagging you?â
âNothing, dear. Actually it's just that⌠I want to ask you something.â
âWhat is it?â
She pats on his blanket and moves her fingers gently through his golden locks. âYou remember, you lost that set of colour pens I gifted you last Christmas?â
âThat one? I found it, mom. It was just misplaced under the pile of my colouring sheets.â
âAnd how did it feel, getting it back?â
He claps his hands gleefully, âI was so glad, I found those. They are the best gift.â
Savannah smiles. âWhat if I tell you that you are going to get the best gift you could have ever wished for?â
âWhat could that thing be?â
âFabian, it's not a thing. It's a person who wants to meet you.â
âDo I know them?â
âYes, you know him by certain names , now you will see him right in front of your eyes.â
âDoes he know me?â
âYes, very well.â
âIs he important to you, mother?â he asks in a serious tone making Savannah smile. His change of tone taking the matter at hand seriously reminds her again of the similarities he shares with Liam.
âYes. He is someone very important.â
âSomeone likeâŚ.do you mean⌠like is there... is he⌠is he your boyfriend?â
Savannah laughs out loudly at that and starts shaking her head in denial.
Fabian pouts his lower lip and lowers his eyelids in embarrassment. âI am sorry. I justâŚâ
Savannah cuddles him up. âYou donât have to be. Fabian, itâs time you meet your family, my child. He is one of the important part of our family. Letâs just meet once and then we take it ahead from there.â
The word family has Fabian thrilled. He has been patiently waiting to see uncles and aunts, grandparents and cousins like all other children do. He leaps at the opportunity. âOkay, when are we meeting?â
âWhenever you are comfortable.â
âI am ready, mom. Like, right now .â he emphasizes with his small hands.
âThatâs great. Although right now wonât nd possible. How about breakfast tomorrow?â
âI would love that, momâ he beams at her.
âOkay, tomorrow morning then it is. Breakfast.â
âWill you be able to make some vanilla shake?â
âWhy not. See you my sunshine. Good night. â
âGood night mom.â
Savannah trudges to the bedroom still smiling at Fabianâs vanilla shake request. âLike father, like son.â She remembers how Liam too used to like Vanilla shake . He had once visited with Drake after a polo match and they all had shake made by Savannah.
She got into her bed, remembering the young age fun.......
âWhat man! I defeated the prince and all I get is a vanilla shake?â Drake whined to Liam.
âVanilla shake is a good celebration, Drake.â Liam tried to convince.
âYes, try it.â Savannah said walking in with three tall glasses in a tray.
âCheers!â said Liam, picking up his glass.
Without a minute to waste he took a big sip and so did Savannah while Drake just watched them in disinterest.
âWho has vanilla shake for celebrating a victory?â he was mumbling when he heard his sister giggle.
He followed her gaze settling on Liams face that had a big white moustache of cream. Drake smirked.
âWhat ?â Liam asked looking between both of them.
She pointed out snickering, â You got a big Moustache like an old man.â
Instead of wiping it off, Liam got up to look into the reflection on the TVâs black LED screen.
He turned towards Savannah and boomed, âHo,Ho,Ho. I am Santa Claus. I am here to give you the Christmas present. What do you wish? Tell me young lady and I will grant it.â
Savannah shied looking at Liamâs playful manner and giggled more while Drake rolled his eyes.
She shakes her head to come back to reality and messages Liam inviting him for the breakfast. Next moment she goes into a deep slumber while thinking about the golden days. It has been a long day.
Next morning
Savannah greets Liam and ushers him into her humble abode. There in front him stands his replica. Fabianâs sandy blonde hair and ocean blue eyes are a straightforward giveaway for anyone to see.
Savannah awkwardly smiles and tries to break the ice. âFabian, Come meet William.â She introduces.
âGood morning Fabian. I am William.â Liam says.
âGood morning sir,I am Fabian.â He moves ahead and shakes his hand in a very formal manner. Liam is surprised and impressed too.
âPleasure meeting you.â
Savannah guides them to the dining table where Fabian already has his glass placed. âPlease have a seat. I will be back in a minuteâ
She goes to the kitchen leaving them alone for sometime.
Fabian is slurping his favourite Vanilla shake while his eyes are fixed on the man who has come to meet him. Surprisingly his looks are too familiar to him. So he is observing him with his big blue eyes.
Liam smiles at him waiting for Savannah to join them.
âYou like Vanilla Shake?â
Fabian nods, âIts my favourite drink.â He swallows in another sip and asks, âWhat is your favourite?â
âSame as yours.â Liam bends over the small round table, to whisper.
Fabian imitates bending towards him and whispers back . âMy Mommy makes the best vanilla shake. You can ask her for some. She wonât deny. She has a big heart.â
Liam straightens. âI know, Fabian. I love the one she makes.â
Savannah walks out of her kitchen holding two glasses and offers one to Liam.
Vanilla shake. His favourite drink that Bianca made, that Savannah learnt and mastered from her mother, that his son is also fond of. He gives out a heavy breath that he didnât realise he was holding up and takes the drink from her hands and places it on the table.
He gives a dry smile, first time at loss of words.
Savannah nods slightly telling him to wait. She is going to handle it. âThe way she handled everything in her life. Alone.â Liam thought. She is stronger than anyone can think of. She is stronger than him. He knows. So he lets her take the reins of this moment.
She sits down beside Fabian, her son and starts. âFabian, you remember those bedtime stories?â she pulls him into her lap.
âYes, Mother.â He answers and Liam thinks. âOh, he answers like me!â
âDo you remember, you always felt strongly about one person in particular, in those stories?â Savannah continues.
Fabian nods, stealing a glance at Liam.
âWas it me?â Liam questions himself silently.
âMommy?â Fabian holds on to her hands, âIs he really King Liam?â
While Liam is surprised that his son has recognised him, Savannah isnât. She knows how her eight year old was smarter than any kid around. She simply nods.
Fabianâs gaze is intense making Liam squirm in his chair. The fear of rejection grappling him. âWhat if ⌠? â
Before Liamâs mind could wander into the threatening possibilities, Fabian shocks him with another question. âAre you my father?â
Liam expected Savannah to tell Fabian about him. But his son is intelligent enough to connect the missing dots. Liam loses control over the stoic appearance he carries. His emotions are raw as he looks at Savannah. She nods at him.
He Is scared, âWhat ifâŚ?â his mind is continuously taking him down the spiral, âWhat if Fabian doesnât accept me? What if he hates me?â He shakes away the wild thoughts and swallows. He doesnât realise his mouth has gone dry. A heavy minute passes before he answers, âYes.â
Fabian breaks away from his motherâs arms and leaps to hug Liam taking him back with surprise, yet again. His short arms circle Liamâs neck as he hugs tightly, resting his head on Liamâs broad chest.
âI knew it.â He utters. âI knew it, father. I am glad you could come. I am very happy that you came.â He keeps repeating. â I am sorry, you had to go through so much, Father. I am sorry I couldnât help you. I am sorry, I wasnât there to tell you that we love you and we care for you, father. We do, we really, really do. Both Mommy and I do.â
Savannah had told Liam that Fabian knew about him. But he didnât expect the little one to forget his own hardships and instead console his father. Liam hugs him back, tears falling unfiltered from his eyes, breaking his strong façade of a king. Fabian has not only accepted him but is pouring out all his love and affection forgetting all the wrong that happened. His little boy is already so grown up and he has missed it all! His heart brakes at the thought and he looks up at Savannah.
She sits there, quietly watching the reunion, wiping away her tears. Fabian made her proud. And then, this man! She catches his gaze and he mouths the words at her, âThank you.â
He caresses Fabian, moving his hand over his head and then placing a kiss in his hair. His other hand is still snuggled around his sonâs little frame. Fabian looks up and Liam cups his face placing kisses on his forehead and cheeks and the nose and his eyes. He can never get tired of kissing his son but Fabian shakes his head. Liam stops. âDoes he not like my kisses?â
Fabian shakes his hand while he raises his tiny little fingers and starts wiping Liamâs tears.
âOh dear God! I need to learn a lot from my son.â Liam thinks and smiles through the tears, hugging his son again. He stretches out an arm for Savannah to join in and Fabian circles his one arm around his mother other arm latching on to his father.
After a long time, they finally sit around the small circular table, Fabian settled in Liamâs lap.
Savannah pushes the vanilla shake that sat idly on the table towards Liam.
Liam instantly indulges into his drink. After a gulping half the glass in one go, he smiles at Fabian.
Fabian looks wide eyed at Liam and then back at his mother . He is not sure if he can react in front of his father. When he sees his mother chuckling, he joins in.
Liam gives them a confused look.
âWhat happened ? He asks.
âYou got moustaches like Santa!â Fabian splits into a laughter.
Liam catches Savannah go stiff at mention of Santa. The memories come back to her like a whiplash. Before Fabian could notice his motherâs sad face, Liam jumps at him and grabs him. âHo,Ho,Ho. I am Santa Claus. I am here to give you the Christmas present. What do you wish? Tell me young boy and I will grant it.â Liam circles his arms around Fabian
Fabian rolls out laughing, âReally?â
âAlways!â Liam beams hugging Fabian and looking at Savannah with a promise in his eyes.

In Flight, Cordonian Royal Jet, above the Mediterranean SeaÂ
Looking out over the vast expanse of water below her, and under the clear blue skies above the Mediterranean Sea, no clouds were in sight ... not a white cloud, nor a black cloud.Â
Riley gazed out the large passenger window of the private jet, in solace, with her memories. Everything felt calm; almost too calm. The flight from New York to Cordonia was eight hours in duration, and even though they left early in the morning, they would not arrive at the palace until late in the evening with the change in time zones.Â
Trying to and not getting any rest, her thoughts returned to the events over the holidays.
...Remembering when Liam arrived at her door, in New York on Christmas Eve, a short week ago. The expression of elation on his face as she opened the door for him...Â
[âHello, my love,â he tenderly smiled; He was standing there with an exquisite bouquet of long-stemmed red roses, as uniformed delivery drivers from the toy store waited patiently at a distance behind him, as the Royal guard performed a security check.Â
Liam stepped over the threshold, leaning down to draw her in for a kiss on the cheek, as she accepted his gift. âOh Li, these are gorgeous; thank you so much.âÂ
At Bastienâs prompt, the delivery people entered the brownstone with prewrapped gifts and placed them under the Christmas tree, also filling the extra space in the living room very quickly.Â
Chuckling, Riley watched as Liam thanked them with a generous tip, as he closed the door after them.Â
âOur son will be so thrilled at what Santa brought him; wait till he wakes up tomorrow.â Â
Liam laughed, moving quickly to put his arm around her, pulling her to his side. âWho says all these gifts are just for him? Hmmm?â Riley turned her head towards him, as Liam bent to capture her lips in a passion-fueled kiss.Â
âAh yes, your gift is right here.â Liam slipped his hand inside his coat to reveal a small box, wrapped in gold with a red ribbon. âThis is for you.â}Â
Riley breathed out, shaking her head.Â
...Remembering wanting him so badly that evening ...as he kissed her forehead to say âgood nightâ before turning to the guest room; Leaving her feeling so confused, once again.Â
...Remembering how excited LiLi was when he saw his father again Christmas morning ... and the look of pure joy in Liamâs expression as he watched his son blissfully playing with his new toys.Â
...Remembering the look of adoration between Liam and his son; a private and sacred bond established between the two ... a bond only meant for them.Â
Riley looked down at her phone and smiled fondly at the picture of William. He was proudly standing beside his gingerbread house gift for Liam, alongside Daniel and Matteo, to smile at the camera. Riley marveled at how unequivocally her son loved his father, so quickly. As if two loose puzzle pieces finally clicked into place. There was never a doubt in her mind that William needed to be wherever his father was. The connection between father and son was undeniable.Â
...and with those thoughts, she agreed to return to Cordonia. Â
And now, she found herself on the Royal jet headed back, leaving behind her New York world for the place that shattered her âhappily ever after,â again.Â
Liam, being the new, ever-doting father was pointing out to his son the shores of Cordonia through the window. She saw the look of marvel in Liamâs eyes, as he watched his sonâs reaction to seeing Cordonia for the very first time. They were sitting in seats across the aisle from her as she glanced over.Â
Catching Rileyâs eye, Liam responded with a wink and a smile.Â
"Welcome home, love."Â
Riley smiled in return, as her heart skipped a beat.Â
Home...Â
It had been a while since she had felt this way about Cordonia. Another lifetime; so much has changed, and yet remained the same.Â
***
Damien Nazario, the Interpol agent who was now permanently assigned to be William Rys's personal bodyguard, was reviewing the Crown prince's dossier, and his duties to the Cordonian crown, his new employer. Bastien took a seat beside the young agent to answer any questions he may have, as head of the Royal guard, at the rear of the plane's cabin.Â
"So, Damien, any questions for me?"Â
"No, sir. I believe I have a handle on the situation.âÂ
"Good, because you are now the official head of the security detail for Prince William, the future king of Cordonia."Â
"Understood, sir.â Damien was well aware of the complexity of a constitutional monarchy.Â
"Now, there's one more thing I need to discuss with you,â Bastien eyed the young agent.Â
"Yes, sir?"Â
"Madeleine Amaranth, the former queen of Cordonia. I have forwarded her updated dossier to you."Â
"Yes, I've read it through.â Damien paused, waiting for more information.Â
"Good, because she has expressed malicious intent towards Prince William and Lady Riley, should they return to Cordonia."Â
"Understood. I'll ensure her movements are tracked and reported inside and out of the country, sir."Â
"Thank you, Damien.âÂ
"My pleasure, sir.âÂ
Bastien, looking pleased, leaned back in his chair, checking the time on his watch, as he felt the plane begin its descent.Â
Cordonia, CapitalÂ
The jet touched down smoothly on the tarmac, as the engines powered down. The cabin door opened, and the stairs were lowered.Â
Riley could feel the warm breeze blow past her as she stepped off the plane.Â
Taking a deep breath, Riley looked around. The air was different here. It was fresh and clean. She closed her eyes and let the wind brush her cheeks.Â
Liam followed, with William sleeping in his arms. Â
"Is everything alright, love?" Liamâs brows were raised in concern, noticing her hesitation.Â
"Yes, I'm just taking it all in." Riley, looked down, unable to keep eye contact.Â
"Are you sure, Riley? You've been very quiet throughout the entire flight home."Â
"I'm fine, Liam. It is just a lot to process. I'm just a little overwhelmed."Â
"All right, I understand. Let us get to the palace, so you and William can get settled and rest ... okay?"Â
"Yes, thank you, Liam."Â
Liam glanced over at Riley with concern as he personally buckled his son into the car seat. It was quite easy for him to see and feel the apprehension in her mood. She could not hide her emotions from him as well as she always thought she could.
Riley had remained noticeably quiet during the ride to the palace as well, looking out at the passing countryside. Liam could not help but wonder if she was having second thoughts about returning to Cordonia, and/or to him.Â
As they pulled up to the palace gates, Liam looked over at Riley, noticing a small smile on her face.Â
"What is it, love?" Liam spoke softly, reaching for her hand.Â
Riley returned his touch with a squeeze. "This place...it's beautiful."Â
"Thank you, that, it is. Welcome home."Â
âWilliam will be so excited when he wakes up.â Riley glanced at a still sleeping William as the SUV slowed to a stop.Â
"I can't begin to tell you how much it means to me.... to have you both here." Liam confessed.Â
"You're welcome, Liam. It's the least I can do."Â Â
Liam's heart sank at her words. He hated the distance between them. He wanted to take her in his arms and make everything right, but, for right now, he knew that was not the best strategy.Â
He had to accept that things had changed, and their relationship was different now. He had to be patient and give Riley the space she needed.Â
But he also had to make her see how important she was to him. He had to show her how much he had missed her ... that he wanted a future with her and William in Cordonia.Â
As the SUV door opened for her, Riley felt a sense of Deja vu. This was where she had started her journey with Liam in Cordonia all those years ago. And now, here she was, back again.Â
"Do you want me to take you and William to the guest wing, or do you want to stay in my chambers?"Â
"I would like to stay with you, if that's okay."Â
"Of course, Riley. I would love that."Â
It was surreal for Riley as she walked the pristine palace halls towards the Royal Chambers. Liam carried William, who was fast asleep in his arms beside her.Â
The memories of the past times she was here flooded her mind and her heart ached as she pushed the painful memories aside. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves.Â
As they reached the large double doors of the entrance to the Royal east wing, the guards opened the doors for Liam and Riley to enter.Â
Riley stepped inside; the same chambers where she had spent so much time before. The familiar scent of Liam's cologne filled the air, sending a wave of longing for a past time through her mind.Â
Walking into her room ... it was exactly as she remembered it. Everything was in its place, from the elegant chandelier hanging above the bed, to the intricate paintings adorning the walls.Â
Riley took a deep breath and sat down on the edge of the bed. She looked around the room, taking in every detail.Â
She felt a pang of sadness as she remembered those past times.Â
After tucking William into his bed in the adjacent room, Liam came in and sat down next to her. He gently placed his hand on hers, and she looked up at him, their eyes meeting.Â
"What are you thinking about Riley?"Â Â
"I'm okay, Liam. I was just thinking about how much things have changed since I was here last."Â
He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and held her close. "I know it's a lot, but I'm here for you, and I'll help you in any way I can," Liam whispered.Â
"Thank you, Liam."Â
He pulled away and cupped her face in his hands, staring into her eyes intently. "You're welcome, Riley. Always. Nothing could ever change how I feel about you.âÂ
He moved in to press his lips to hers, and she melted into his kiss.Â
It was soft and gentle, and full of longing.Â
He broke the kiss and rested his forehead against hers, breathing heavily. "God, Riley, I've missed you."Â
"I've missed you, Li."Â
He leaned down and kissed her again, deeper this time.Â
His tongue swept across her bottom lip, and she opened her mouth to him.Â
Their tongues tangled together in a dance that was familiar and yet new.Â
They were no longer the same people they were when they had last been together. They were both older and wiser, and the passion between them burned even brighter.Â
Riley pulled away and put her hand on his chest, feeling his heart beating beneath her palm.Â
"Liam, I..."Â
"Shhh."Â
He placed a finger over her lips. "Don't say anything, Riley. Just feel."Â
His lips found hers again, and the world disappeared. There was nothing but the two of them, lost in each other.Â
She kissed him back, wrapping her arms around his neck.Â
She moaned into his mouth as he slid his hands down her back and pulled her closer.Â
He broke the kiss and buried his face in her neck, inhaling her scent.Â
"Riley," he breathed. "God, I want you so much."
âLiam, I ...âÂ
Liam pulled back and looked into her eyes, âstay with me tonight.âÂ

Choices MCs (Filipino Edition lol)
ăNextă
Finally drew four of my Choices MCs inspired by @cassiopeiacorvus and her wonderfully done OC compilations (how do you have the patience to draw all of em omg)
I'm thinking of doing the same for my Romance Club MCs too (background would be the purple of the homescreen there)
Interested in commissioning me? Click the source! đ
Evangeline Marie G. (Guzman) Lakandula - Ah yes, my soft, anxious babie with self-worth issues. She comes from a messy background with a horrible father. She was close to her late (paternal) grandparents and had a very complicated relationship with her late mother. One of her relatives shes v close to is her older cousin, Ethan.
She's a college dropout thanks to her father's bad choices and worked the moment she had a chance to.
After her mother passed, that was it for Evangeline. She kinda needed to go away from her dad and his loud voice and other issues. So she left home and Ethan helped her out before he left for a business trip abroad.
He had her go to a house he owned in Laguna where she could live in provided she just do the cleaning in there. She found simple work that she was qualified for and that was her life for the next few years until a certain bachelor party came into her life.
Diwa Kalangitan M. (Masangga) del Rosario - My chaotic good and very protective MC who definitely rabbleroused in the school she works in.
She was raised in a household that follows some precolonial beliefs and traditions. She has a stepfather who's an albularyo and two half-siblings. One is studying in college, the other is still in high school. She has a close relationship to both her parents.
And she is rather happy with her job as a teacher in a private school. Sure she sometimes goes against curriculum to make sure the kids enjoy her lessons. She's a class advisor also so when she found out their math teacher humiliated one of her students, she confronted said teacher.
Her trip to America is really just a birthday trip until the events of the book started. In the end she ends up in a poly relationship with Nik and Cal. (She does end up pointing out to the boys that she'll have to go back to her work and family at least just to properly resign and find work near them and also to assure her family she's safe.)
Maya Chelidonia C. (Caacbay) dela Rosa - The local tired detective who had to move abroad for their own safety. Love them SM.
Maya is the child of Jaime dela Rosa, a cop in the Philippines who does not follow in corrupt practices and tries to do right by the community. He was killed after coincidentally seeing signs of corruption in the force and wanting to expose it.
After their father's death, Maya also followed in his footsteps. On their end, they wanted to try and do some good in their job but ended up experiencing some discrimination in the work force. Enter them finding the same evidence of corruption that their father found as well. This time they managed to expose the corruption but in the end, one of their few friends in the force warned them that they'll have to flee the country due to some v angry officials.
So they fled with their mother and younger sister.
Their sister became a fashion designer. Maya found work as a private detective and the two teamed up to be able to live a decent life. Their sister travels with their mom on fashion shows. They're fine living nearby their maternal uncle with their dog, Spudge. (He's a scaredy cat and a lil crybaby who doesn't like strangers and by that I mean he starts crying when the strangers notice him. It's not out of trauma, he just likes Maya and their fam more than anyone else and is v shy with others. He's also scared of the dark and loud noises.)
Inocencia Honorata G. (Galang) Valenciano - and finally, my love's embarrassing bby. My Rafael Aveiro romancer. Love her sm.
She and her mom, older brother and little sister ran away from their father when they were a kid. Her parents annulled their marriage after a few years.
Her older brother became the youngest lawyer in the country and had a firm in New York seek him out. This led to him helping Inocencia and her sister (who had skipped grades and managed to enter college the same year as Inocencia).
Inocencia is v non-competitive that she chose De La Salle University while her sister went to their grandfatherâs alma mater, University of the Philippines. At college, Inocencia got dubbed as SiaSia because of the repeated -cia in her first name and surname.
The two got accepted into Edenbrook when they were gonna start. Inocencia being 27 and her sister being 25. By then, Inocencia still isn't competitive and didn't sign up for the competition for the diagnostics team but her little sister shoved her to try it out.

It's another long one đŹđđđĽš. Listen I'm only slightly sorry, lol. A lot is happening here, LOL.
A few evenings later, what would have been a polo match in Portavira was canceled, and instead, a small, intimate memorial took place for Penelope near the water. The forecast for the day perfectly matched the melancholy atmosphere, as storm clouds rolled in and painted the sky in dark hues of blue and gray, the crisp breeze causing the temperatures to drop well below average.Â
The nobility mourned alongside the family, but whispers of what happened and why spread like wildfire. An official announcement about her death was released, but the details were incredibly vague; they wanted to withhold that information until they had someone to hold accountable. Emmaline and Landon cooperated with Ray, who worked around the clock to find some kind of suspect or a clue to lead them to one.
Liam was confident Ray would promptly produce an answer. Olivia helped him scour the crime scene from top to bottom, but little clues remained. However, Penelopeâs note had fingerprints on it and her body showed prominent signs of a physical altercation, all of which pointed to her trying to fight back. The coroner extracted DNA from underneath her fingernails and found bruising and discoloration on her forearms and shoulders. He concluded this case was a homicide, which didnât come as a surprise to anyone.Â
Every ounce of evidence was sent off for further analysis, and everyone anxiously awaited the results. The cross reference in the national security database would surely produce a name to match those fingerprints, and they hoped it would put them one step closer to unraveling the chaotic web around them. Ray looked at the surveillance system but found someone deleted the footage from the camera positioned outside of Penelopeâs room for a certain period â no doubt when whoever took her life was inside.Â
They had a time frame, which was at least a start, but that was the only thing they knew.
Ray did as asked and backtracked to look into Rhondaâs demise. Liam was correct in his assumption that most of the damning evidence was long gone, but they confirmed the legitimacy of the second report they found; Bastienâs fingerprints were indeed on the murder weapon. Although they remained unsure of where the brutality initially took place, Bastien would face charges of homicide â and more â as the story unfolded, and Liam intended to serve him multiple platters of cold, hard justice. He was being monitored at a local hospital under a continuous watch from three heavily armed guards and medical professionals.Â
Liam told the guards if Bastien miraculously disappeared, they would face charges of aiding a dangerous criminal, even going as far as threatening to make them stand trial for treason. He didnât use the term hate lightly, but he hated Bastien and was determined to make him stand before God and everyone to take accountability for what heâd done. His doctors had no choice but to put him into a medically induced coma while they tried to stabilize internal bleeding from Liamâs relentless assault, but when he woke, he would get moved to a permanent cell.Â
They still knew who held that kind of control over Bastien, and that was Constantine. Liam avoided him at all costs in the short time since that revelation. He wanted to question him and knew he needed to, but he honestly didnât know how he could remain calm and keep his head level, and this wasnât something he could send Olivia to do; he needed to hear it, straight from the horseâs mouth. However, he genuinely didnât want to hurt the man who gave him life, but if it came out that he harmed or acted against Riley, his body might react without a second thought and he knew that would not be pretty. Perhaps he should have kept his cool with Bastien to get more information, but he didnât regret taking out some of his aggressions; if anything, it was a release he didnât realize he needed.Â
Since Ray was now officially investigating the homicides, Olivia took over the search for Riley and Tariq. She wasnât as skilled as Ray in tracking missing persons but had some basic knowledge. Her results were the same as his â there were no traces of either. She contacted the airport and requested security footage for the date and time Bastien specified, but unfortunately for them, he told the truth when he said he dropped her off in a blind spot; the SUV wasnât on camera and Riley was nowhere to be seen.
She watched the footage from every angle until the sun broke out and illuminated a nearly empty parking lot, but never saw a single sign of anyone relevant.Â
They dissected the file âOperation Ghostâ from top to bottom for every detail. It held no other useful information, but enough to charge Bastien with murder and prove Riley did not disgracefully leave with another suitor. Technically, it was enough to clear her name, but it did nothing to ensure her safety or help them locate her. Her phone also received a thorough examination but uncovered nothing of importance.
Liam knew he could not wait any longer because time was of the essence, and they needed answers; he had to corner Constantine and demand an explanation. It crossed his mind more than once that his father could know something, but he shook it off, concluding there was no way Constantine would do something of that nature. In retrospect, he was the reigning monarch at the time of the incident; something of this magnitude couldnât have gone completely undetected, especially if Bastien was involved. The thought alone shredded his fragile heart, but he pieced it back together with bandaids and pushed forward.Â
Liamâs mental state was fluctuant, at best. He felt unending guilt for allowing all of this madness to happen, and that pit doubled in size with every passing hour. If he had been more attentive and alert from the beginning, none of this would be happening. Innocent lives were taken all too soon from a path of unrestrained fury, and he truly felt like that blood lay on his hands. Not to mention Rileyâs heinous assault rested heavily on his conscience, creating wave after wave of remorse mixed in with soul-consuming rage. His out-of-body experience continued to taunt him; her screams and those vile chortles flowed through his mind on an insistent loop, taunting him with shreds of the truth, but he still couldn't put a face to that man's voice. And now, he had the added stress that she suspected he ordered her assault. He hoped she wouldnât believe the lie, but without seeing her, he automatically jumped to the worst-case scenarios all the way around.Â
They decided Liam and Leo would quietly pull Constantine aside and question him after the memorial concluded. There were only a few events left of the engagement tour, and now the wedding had much more at stake than only the future of the monarchy. It wasnât a hunch they had confirmation for, but they just knew if they didnât locate Riley before it was time for Liam to say I do, something drastic would happen.Â
During the ceremony, Liamâs heart broke for the shattered remnants of a mourning family, but he couldnât help but feel they were on the verge of a breakthrough. If his father was involved, this couldnât climb the social ladder any higher, meaning Constantine could hold all the answers he desperately sought. He kept telling himself he would control his emotions regardless of what his father said, but everyone knew that was a lie, especially given his unfiltered and raw reactions as of late. Leo expected a knock-down, drag-out between Liam and their father, but he would stand beside his brother through hell and high water when it came down to it.Â
As the service winded down, Liam made a bee-line for Constantine, who was deep in conversation with Godfrey and Adelaide, with Leo hot on his heels. He made it to the group and plastered on the politest smile he could muster, ignoring a glare from the duke. âExcuse me, but I need to speak with my father.âÂ
Constantine waved him off, barely even glancing in his direction. âNot now, son. Iâm in the middle of a discussion.âÂ
Liam forcefully clenched his jaw and swallowed down the ball of rage forming in his throat. âI insist on speaking with you. It is urgent.â His eyes pleaded, but he didnât make it too noticeable; just enough for Constantine to read because the last thing he wanted was to alert Godfrey and Adelaide. It took every ounce of willpower he had not to get irate and start screaming right then and there, but he was determined not to lose his head â at least until after his father answered some questions.
Constantineâs irritation rose, but he paused and observed Liam and within a second, his resolve weakened. For the first time in weeks, he truly took in his son and what he saw left him speechless; his sunken and darkened eyes with large bags underneath, his slouched posture, and he spotted Liam fidget with his hands, even though he tried to hide it. He knew Liam spent a few hours at the hospital recently, but since he was released so quickly, he assumed it was a farce, or someone being overprotective of the monarch. However, at that moment, he started to question his well-being.
Leo stood beside him, but wouldnât look up to meet any of their gazes. Constantine heard he was around somewhere, but hadnât seen him until the beginning of the ceremony. That wasnât unusual, as Leo typically avoided his father like the plague, but he consistently interacted with Regina when he visited, and even she hadnât mentioned him. His body language seemed nervous compared to the usual cocky demeanor Leo always wore, as he continuously bounced in place and mindlessly trapped his fingers against his thigh, raising multiple red flags.
Constantine had never seen his sons in such a way; the tension within them was palpable, making it impossible to ignore.Â
He casually finished the rest of his wine, doing his best not to raise suspicion of their distress to the current audience. âAlright, boys, you have my attention.â He politely waved toward the lingering duke and duchess, before following Liam and Leo away from the crowd.
Liam silently led them down the beach, away from the surrounding commotion. While they walked, he racked his brain, trying to figure out the best way to approach this. When he ascended the throne, he never imagined it would lead him here â questioning the man he put on a pedestal his entire life about his one true love's disappearance.Â
His heart pounded so hard in his chest that he was sure it would jump out at any moment, and the bites of finger foods he consumed tumbled in his stomach, threatening to reemerge. Every step crunched in the sand, the sounds echoing in the deafening silence. The ocean lapped against nearby rocks, but was the farthest thing from calming, white noise; every violent crash amplified the tension, the air nearly crackling from the combined stress and the distant lightning.Â
They reached a small enclosure away from the gathered nobility and sat inside. As they did, Constantine quickly asked, âWhatâs going on? Are you alright, Liam? Were you in the hospital?âÂ
âI was, but thatâs not important right now⌠ââ Liam trailed off, his voice soft; a stark contrast to the swell of emotions in his head. He remained silent momentarily before murmuring, âI need to ask you about somethingâŚâ
âAlright, well, what is it?â
âBefore I begin, will you promise to be honest with me? I â Iâm begging you.â Liam pleaded, but wouldn't meet his father's curious gaze. His hands trembled violently, leaving him with no choice but to clasp them tightly in his lap.Â
Constantine furrowed his brow. âI shall do my best, son, but whatâs this pertaining? Whatâs the matter?âÂ
Liam glanced at Leo, his distress shining brightly, and his brother gave him a reassuring nod in return. He wanted so badly to believe his father was innocent, but deep down, he knew he wasnât, and the thought alone made him fearful; he wasnât sure he could stop the wrath that may ensue once the confession left his mouth, but he needed to hear it, regardless.Â
With a deep, shaky breath, Liam began. âI think you know something about what happened with Riley. We know she didnât leave with Tariq and the photos were fake. We found her things in Applewood with evidence to suggest she suffered an attack. Bastien has been working to cover it up and is responsible for that maidâs death â possibly Penelopeâs too â to ensure this stays hidden. He confessed and told us you ordered him to engage⌠I donât want to believe it, but I think he told the truthâŚâÂ
He sat forward but kept his vision cast downward, dread hitting the pit of his stomach like an anvil. âI need to know where she is. I donât care about everything else, aside from the murders. Just â tell me where Riley is.â Â
Constantineâs jaw dropped further and further the longer Liam spoke. Leo observed with a critical eye, but his fatherâs confusion only intensified throughout the story. Constantine was good at a stoic facade, but he was no actor and Leo knew all his little tells â he was genuinely shocked. However, there was guilt in his eyes; when Liam mentioned the scandal, Leo saw the flash in his gaze, but otherwise, he only showed bewilderment.Â
âLiam⌠I ââ Constantine started before he forcefully coughed, but quickly cleared his throat and tried again. âI admit to knowing of the scandal and her relocating back to New York, but I know nothing about the rest.âÂ
Liamâs vision turned crimson, but he squeezed his hands into fists and used every speck of restraint to deny the urge to act on his intrusive thoughts. âHow? Bastien has been working to cover it up this entire time! I didnât tell him to do that â you did, didnât you?âÂ
âI â I did, son.â He stopped to take a steadying breath. âI told Bastien to bury the tracks, but I only approved the scandal and her returning to the States.âÂ
âYou approved the scandal?â He repeated, his brows nearly touching his hairline. âWhat does that even mean?âÂ
âThatâs correct ââ Constantine admitted with his head held high. âBut I assure you, I did not partake in any of these other things, nor did I know they were happening.â He sighed heavily when Liam and Leo merely stared at him, disbelief etched on their features. âSon, I knew how you felt about her â it was clear. If given the chance, you would have selected her as your queen, but I couldnât let that happenâŚâÂ
âWhy?â Liam demanded, his tone sharp and harsh.Â
Constantineâs shoulders slumped, an air of melancholy clouding his expression. âI was afraid, Liam. Look at me â Iâm withering faster than an apple rotting in the summer sun. I needed to do everything in my power to ensure you had a stable, capable queen to rule beside you.âÂ
Liam shook his head, the rosy hues in his complexion brightening with every sullen breath. His willpower teetered, hanging on by less than a thread. âRiley would have made an excellent queen. She thrived during the social season! She may not have been born royal, but she fit right in! Everyone accepted her! The people loved her!âÂ
âShe was inexperienced, Liam.âÂ
âShe could have learned everything she needed to know,â Liam bit out, his patience dwindling rapidly. Leo noticed and shifted in his seat, praying with everything in him that he wasnât about to go postal.
âInexperience equals weakness. I was protecting you.â
âDonât give me that bullshit.â Liam scoffed.Â
âLiam, believe it or not, I only did it to protect youââÂ
âSo you made me turn my back on her to protect me? Sheâs in fucking danger because of you! I ignored her because you shoved this down my goddamn throat!â Liam yelled, not caring who heard.
Constantine winced at his volume but calmly responded, âI didnât know she was in danger. Bastien told meââÂ
âI donât believe you. I canât believe you.â Tears blurred his vision as his entire world came crashing down. He felt a fool for giving him the benefit of the doubt, but that was a mistake he wasnât willing to make more than once.Â
âSonââÂ
âNo, you â youâre not my father, not anymore. You threw my mother in my face so much, but look at you! What youâve become would disgust her!â Liam seethed. âI should banish you right now for lying and betraying your own flesh and blood. Do I mean anything to you?!â
âYou mean everything to me, son.â Constantine held his hands up in surrender but remained calm as a cucumber. âAnd I understand your anger, but I need you to listen to me for a momentââÂ
âFuck. You.â Liam growled. He got into Constantineâs personal space quick as lightning and grabbed the front of his shirt, yanking him to his feet. âI hope you rot in hell, you spineless piece of shit.âÂ
Liam balled the fabric in his hands and bore his eyes into Constantine, who merely let it happen, but he didnât recognize his son; Liam was nowhere to be seen, and he couldnât pinpoint exactly what this monster before him was. Heâd never seen him so worked up, but knew he needed to calm him down so he could plead his case.Â
Leo approached and rubbed Liamâs shoulder, gently pulling him from his enraged trance. âLi, man ââ He gave him a sad smile as Liam faced him. He understood his brotherâs fury over the situation, but Constantine hadnât even started talking. Until they got useful information from him, he had to keep his cool â for Riley. His eyes pleaded with him, but he breathed a sigh of relief when Liamâs features softened as if he got the silent message loud and clear.Â
Liam turned back to his father and held his intent gaze for a long moment before he pushed him away with a firm shove. The former monarch stumbled, but quickly regained his footing.Â
Constantine straightened his jacket and sat back down while avoiding the judgemental glares from his sons. He took a deep, shaky breath before he softly started. âDo you remember what happened to your mother? Did you want something similar to happen to Lady Riley?â
âLook around!â Liam bellowed, his face red as a ruby. âIt is happening, and you fucking did it!âÂ
Constantine sighed. âI told you, I knew of the scandal and her departure â nothing else. I ordered Bastien to send her back to New York so you both could start over.âÂ
âShe never returned to New York!â Liam and Leo yelled in unison.Â
Constantine furrowed his brow. â... Pardon?âÂ
âBastien told us he left her for dead in a parking lot after Penelope drugged her, with a plane ticket, but she never went inside!â Liam hastily explained. âShe didnât board, and Bastien told us he later received all her forms of identification in a sealed envelope. We have no fucking clue where sheâs at!âÂ
Constantineâs mouth fell ajar. âBastien told you this?âÂ
âYes! Are you really trying to sit there and tell me you didnât know any of this?!âÂ
Constantine remained silent for a long moment, gathering his thoughts, but both Liam and Leo noticed his anger escalating; neither was aware his elevating state caused his already labored breaths to shallow themselves further. His chest tightened and a strange discomfort erupted and traveled the length of his spine, but he shook it off as best as he could, and focused on the need to prove his innocence.
But Constantine was having trouble keeping his composure because he realized he'd been played and lied to â that was abundantly clear. Someone took matters into their own hands and ignored a direct order, and he was unwilling to take the blame for that. Bastien was at their disposal but even he disobeyed his wishes.Â
They went rogue.Â
As he took in the deadly determination staring back at him in Liamâs eyes, he realized it was time to come clean. Whatever happened that night did not go according to plan; not his plan, anyway.Â
âLiam â let me tell you what I know because I did not wish for any of those things to happen. As a matter of fact, I strictly forbid themâŚâÂ
Lythikos, during the Winter Ball
Constantine retired to the kingâs suite much earlier than normal. Usually, he would keep Regina on the dancefloor until both of their feet ached, but he just didnât have the energy. He insisted she stay at the gathering, as it was still fairly early in the night and one of them needed to be in attendance, but he couldnât withstand another minute. He was exhausted and found his lung capacity was nowhere near what it should have been; no doubt from his recent cancer diagnosis.Â
Since Liamâs social season was in full swing, he knew he needed to step down and let him take the position of reigning monarch. He and Regina made the difficult decision together, after hearing his condition was fatal. However, Constantine realized in doing so, he would dump a world of responsibility on Liamâs shoulders, and he remained uncertain if he could handle the pressure so soon after taking on a role that was never meant for him.Â
Regardless, the suitors all proved themselves capable in one form or another; some more than others. He hoped Liam would make the best decision for Cordonia when the time came, but knew his heart already belonged to a specific candidate. He wanted to forbid Liam from picking her but realized he would ultimately follow his heart. And, at one point, Constantine defied his father and married Eleanor; to speak ill of their hypothetical union would make him a hypocrite, and he knew that. He tried to convince his son to be reasonable and view the situation from a governance perspective, but Liam couldnât see anything past his puppy love.
Just as Constantine was about to begin his nighttime routine, a sharp knock echoed throughout the room. He furrowed his brow, as everyone knew not to bother him after he retired for the night unless it was an emergency. He hastily dashed to the door and swung it open to find a familiar face on the other side.Â
âYour Majesty.âÂ
âHelloâŚâ Constantine answered unsurely. âItâs been a whileâŚâÂ
âIâve kept myself rather busy these days.â Constantineâs face contorted, but before he could press, they continued. âRespectfully, Iâm in a bit of a pinch for time.â His company heartedly chuckled. âDo you mind if I come in? I have a proposition for you. One where we both get something we wantâŚâÂ
Constantine eyed his visitor for a moment, but ultimately let them inside as his curiosity got the better of him. He ushered them to the seats situated around the fireplace and took one across from his guest, a thick silence filling the air. âWhat is this proposition you speak of?âÂ
His companion took a short moment to collect themself but soon began with utmost certainty. âItâs clear who your son intends to choose at the end of this⌠Lady Riley.âÂ
Constantine noticed the hint of distaste in their tone. âYes, I believe that as wellâŚâÂ
âAnd youâve done nothing to stop it? You and I both know Madeleine is the one who rightfully belongs on the throne.âÂ
âReally?â Constantine challenged. âIâm not sure I understand whyââÂ
âShe is a commoner, sir â nothing good will come from that for anyone.â
âI agree with you to an extent, but what am I supposed to do?â Constantine shrugged. âIâve tried speaking with Liam about it, but heâs not listening.âÂ
âHeâs thinking with the wrong head.âÂ
âI concur, but again, how am I supposed to remedy this situation? Itâs not like I can send her home before he has the chance to choose her!âÂ
âPerhaps you can.âÂ
His visitor smiled, and Constantine had never seen such a chilling sight. âPardon?âÂ
âI have a plan⌠We set her up.âÂ
Constantineâs interest rose. â⌠How so?âÂ
âWe get her alone, send someone to her room, and have a photographer waiting to capture a scandalizing scenario⌠Iâm not sure where just yet, but we can dispose and erase all traces of her after.âÂ
âDispose?â Constantine shook his head when his comrade nodded, completely stunned by the suggestion. âNo, we will not be doing that.âÂ
His guest winced. âPerhaps not dispose, but only ensure she leaves and can never return.âÂ
âAnd how do you suggest we do that?âÂ
âWe detain her somewhere â perhaps use the tunââÂ
âNo.â Constantine sternly interrupted. âI will not allow you to do such things to her. Staging a scandal I could agree with, but I will not let you imprison her simply because of her origins.â He scratched his chin, deep in thought. âPerhaps a ticket back to New York would suffice, instead.â
âWe canât just send her back to New York! She will surely find her way back, or Liam willââÂ
âIf Liam is heartbroken, he will let his duty guide him; thatâs the only way he will leave her behind.â Constantine returned but kept his vision locked on the floor.Â
âWe canât simply rely on breaking his heart!â
âI know my son â heâs emotionally driven. If heâs devastated, heâll keep goingâŚâ Constantine admitted in a low voice. He felt guilty about even entertaining the idea; to manipulate his son and the situation, knowing how he felt about Riley, but the past would always be there to haunt him and he couldnât let it go, no matter how hard he tried.Â
â... So, youâre agreeing to the scandal?âÂ
Lady Rileyâs presence was pleasantly surprising and she had undeniable chemistry with Liam. In another universe, he would eagerly support their relationship. However, the throne was not to be taken lightly; it was a dangerous position that would put not only her but Liam at risk as well. Heâd already lived through one assassination attempt and buried his mother after her demise, yet he still entertained the idea of letting a commoner rule beside him. He didnât understand this weakness could bring Cordonia crumbling to the ground, taking his heart and man-hood down with it. Â
Constantine briefly thought back to the torturous months after Eleanorâs death â how heartbroken and hopeless he felt. Those were the darkest times of his life, and he truly didnât know how Cordonia wasn't brought to its knees then. He wanted to protect Liam from experiencing that type of pain at all costs. A harmless scandal and sending Riley back to New York was a decent option; he would ensure Liam continued for the greater good of Cordonia and, eventually, she would become a distant memory.Â
His country and his son would be safe, and Constantine could rest in peace, knowing he did everything to protect what was important to him.Â
However, he didnât know if he could genuinely trust the person before him. The solutions they suggested were extreme, and he did not wish for those to come to fruition. On the other hand, he recognized his time left dwindled rapidly, and as it was, he physically could not make any plan come to fruition and he couldnât step away at such a crucial moment either. He needed to ensure the transition from monarch to monarch went smoothly, especially after Leo's sudden abdication. Â Â
There was no other choice than to take a chance and hope for the best.Â
âWill you be present during the operation?â Constantine questioned with a curious eye.
âYes, sir. I will make sure everything goes according to plan and theyâre removed from the premises after.â The response came immediately, with not even a single second of hesitation.
âThey? Whoâs the other?â
âLord Tariq â heâs the perfect candidate. Heâs naĂŻve enough to go along but still noble. The goal is to photograph them in a compromising position.âÂ
âCompromising how?âÂ
âThat will depend on how the situation flows, I suppose, but something to disgrace her and make your son and the nation believe she left to be with Tariq. Weâll find a media outlet or something to leak the story and soon, her name will leave a bitter taste in everyoneâs mouths â including Liam.âÂ
âAnd how will we enlist this photographer? We canât do it ourselves â itâs too risky.â
âI'll request the aid of Lady Penelope.âÂ
Constantineâs brows rose. âAnd you expect she will agree? What will you offer in return?â
âDonât worry about her,â His guest smirked. âI have my ways, sir⌠She will comply with the request willingly.â
After a moment of deep consideration, Constantine slowly nodded. âI can agree to this, but perhaps we should let her finish out the season to avoid raising suspicion.â
His visitor tensed. âRespectfully, I donât see that as a viable option. If someone has the chance to get to her, they may convince her to stay. It has to happen before the end of the social season â at a random moment, without notice.â
Constantine stared off into the fireplace as he pondered that statement, but ultimately knew it was true. He could admit Riley was kind, funny, and incredibly smart, but those features couldnât grant her the specific birthright she needed. He couldnât let it happen; it wouldnât end well for anyone involved, especially Liam and Riley.Â
This had to happen.Â
âI suppose youâre correct.â Constantine finally agreed with a heavy sigh.Â
âShe has to leave beforehand. Itâs the only way we can make it work.â
Constantine bowed his head, overcome with a rush of various emotions, as their plan snapped itself into place. â... Alright, Iâll allow you to oversee the operation.â
âMarvelous!â His company grinned. âPerhaps you have a few guards to spare? Just to ensure everything runs smoothly⌠Maybe â Bastien?âÂ
âAlright â you have Bastien at your disposal to assist in whatever you may need and he will report to you, but he is to be in charge of Lady Rileyâs departure at the end of the night.â
âAs you wish, my liege⌠Just to clarify, youâre putting me in charge of this operation?âÂ
âI â am.â Constantine reluctantly agreed, but quickly added, âDo not make me regret it⌠Now, what of Tariq?âÂ
âI'll handle him. You and Bastien deal with the commoner.âÂ
âOkay, but neither of them is to be harmed in any of this, and I shall tell Bastien the same â do you understand?â He eyed his visitor critically, searching for any signs of ill intent, but found none. Â
âI do, sir.â His guest snickered, a small notion the monarch didnât notice.Â
Constantine mindlessly nodded, sufficed by the answer. âThis needs to happen fast â perhaps in Applewood, as itâs an older estate and itâll be easier to have all of this go unnoticed.âÂ
âI agree.âÂ
Constantine inspected the person across from him once more, causing his cohort to shift in their seat. âRemember what I said â neither of them is to be injured, only removed â that is an order. And you had better make this quick and quiet â nothing thatâs going to end up causing more harm than good.âÂ
âUnderstood, Sir⌠Now, what can we do about Duchess Olivia?â
âI ordered Bastien to ensure she went back to New York â safely, and he told me he did. I pushed the scandal on you because I assumed the plan came to pass as instructed. It wasnât until this conversation that I realized they played me.âÂ
Liam couldnât believe what heâd heard. It hurt him in a way he didnât know was possible, to know his father acted against the woman he loved in such a way, even if he says his intentions were pure. Plus, the manipulation he suffered at the hands of the person who shouldâve shielded him from the animosity shredded the frail remnants of their relationship. He felt the tear within his chest, as that father-son bond crumbled into a million pieces. He truly didnât know who the man sitting across from him was, and couldnât conclude if he could trust his confession. Constantine looked genuine, almost remorseful, as he spoke, but he knew his father could shift and mold himself to adjust to any situation.
Thatâs what snakes do best.Â
âI donât believe you,â Liam suddenly declared, breaking the tense stillness.Â
Constantineâs shoulders sank. âLiam, I ââÂ
âNo!â Liam shouted as he shot up from his seat to tower over his father. âYouâre lying and I demand to know the truth!âÂ
âLook at me, Liam!â Constantine breathlessly pleaded. âWhat do I have to gain from lying at this point?! Iâm dying! I never wished for harm to come to her â I only wanted to remove her from the situationââÂ
Liam sardonically laughed. âYeah, well they fucking did, alright!âÂ
âLiam, I apologize. I trusted the wrong person andââÂ
âMe too â me too.â Liam shook his head, tears of rage burning his eyes. âHow could you?âÂ
âSon ââÂ
âYOU LET THEM HURT HER!â Liam wailed, not caring if anyone could hear their altercation.Â
âI didnât! I specifically told them not to!âÂ
âBut yet â you ordered Bastien to go along with it?âÂ
Constantine winced. âI did, but he never mentioned any of the additional things you speak of. I told him to cover up the scandal â nothing else. His job was simply to escort Riley to the airport and ensure it stayed quiet. Anything additional, he did under the supervision of someone who was not me.âÂ
âBut you told him to clean it up?â Leo questioned.Â
âYesâŚâ Constantine swallowed thickly, followed by a small coughing fit. He recovered quickly and continued, âBut I didnât knowââÂ
âYeah, well, for once, Bastien understood the assignment â maybe even a little too well.â Leo retorted, completely blown away by Constantineâs admissions. He regained himself rather quickly, however, and a light bulb suddenly went off inside his head. âHave you ever heard the names Anton and Claudius before?âÂ
Liam froze, but centered his death glare on his father, watching for any waivers in his facade but Constantineâs face only contorted, his confusion showcased brightly. â... Who?âÂ
Liam scoffed. âKeep lying and see what happens.â He laughed indignantly, his hands balled into fists at his sides. âIâm not playing these games. I want to know the truth, and I want to know now.â
âI am being truthful with you. Listen to me, Liam â I never should have gone along with it and I am so incredibly sorry,â Constantine pleaded, but as he finished, his lungs screamed for air. He inhaled deeply, searching for oxygen, and found just enough to continue. âI never should have agreed, but I was afraid, and I let that fear guide my decisions in the matter.âÂ
âI do not accept your apology! Youâyouâre a monster!â Liam yelled, his voice cracking on the last syllable as one lone tear traveled down his cheek.Â
âI â I know, sonâŚâ Constantine hung his head. âI regret the things Iâve done, even more so now that I know Lady Riley is potentially in danger.â He hacked again, but then forcefully clenched his jaw. âI told him not toâŚâ He grumbled to himself, which Liam nor Leo heard.Â
His lungs burned with every shallow breath, and his pulse steadily rose, causing his hands to shake and turn clammy. He wanted to blame his sudden change in state on nerves for being caught, but realized it ran deeper than that; something was wrong. A tight sensation in his chest made him feel as if a weight sat on top, growing in pounds by the minute, and every breath seemed to do the opposite of what it should. His windpipe slowly narrowed, and the erratic thump of his heart was so forceful, that he felt it from the tips of his toes to his temples.Â
Leo interjected himself. âYou donât know where she is? Or Tariq? Really?âÂ
Constantine didnât answer but stared off into space with furrowed brows as he recalled conversations, while simultaneously trying to catch his breath and settle his elevating state. He and his conspirator spoke only a few times regarding the ordeal, but every time, they subtly asked for insignificant details regarding a specific location within a few of the duchies. He never thought much of it because the areas were abandoned, never used, and inaccessible; but it would be possible if someone knew where it was, and heâd practically given them a detailed road map to it.Â
His eyes widened as he slowly turned to Liam and spoke just above a whisper. âThe tunnelsâŚâ
âYou mean that old wivesâ tale about underground passageways?â Leo returned.Â
âItâs not a tale, but very real,â Constantine replied, matter-of-factly.Â
âAnd you think thatâs where she is?â
âIt's a huge possibility. If you go deep enough, the passageways lead to cells, almost like a hidden dungeon. Our ancestors used them as torture chambers when someone spoke out of line against the monarchy, but those accusations are mostly hearsay. He kept asking about it when we spoke, but I didnât make the connection.â Constantine coughed again, trying his hardest to hide his rapidly deteriorating state.Â
Liamâs heart rate involuntarily quickened, the light at the end closer than ever before. âThe tunnels?âÂ
âYes⌠If you believe Lady Riley is still in the country, I would almost guarantee thatâs where she is if you havenât found her by now.â Constantine answered through a wheeze, but neither Liam nor Leo noticed, as they processed this new information.Â
âWhere? Which estate?âÂ
âIâm not entirely sure which duchies still have one. A lot of the dukes and duchesses opted to have them filled with cement long ago to erase the remnants of what their ancestors used them for. All I know is they are only accessible through a hidden door, likely on the outside, but it wonât be easy to find without knowing what youâre looking for. It will take you underground, but the chambers will have concealed doors as well. I know for a fact the one at the palace remains open, but Portavira and Ramsford are closed.âÂ
âWhy is the one at the palace still open?â Leo demanded. âAnd how do you know so much about this if youâre âinnocentâ?â He air quoted.
âMy fatherâs father brought forth plans to fill it, but uprisings started and it got lost in the hands of time. As far as my knowledge of it, I was young and curious once as well. There is a book in the library that has a lot of useful information on it, and I know for a fact that it has not moved from its spot on the shelf.â
âHow?â
âMaybe I knew in my subconscious that something wasnât right, and I wanted to ensure it was there so I knew it wasnât being used to gain access.â Constantine shrugged. âAs long as it was there, I didnât have to face the possibilities of what I allowed to happen, I suppose.âÂ
âYeah? Howâd that work out?â Leo rolled his eyes but centered his attention on Liam. âApplewood, maybe?â Â
âYeah⌠Yeah â that makes the most sense, right?â Liam responded, his mind racing a million miles an hour. Every muscle in his body shook as wave after wave of adrenaline rushed through him. âPerhaps Iâll send teams to all the duchies.âÂ
âNot a bad idea â knock âem all out at once, and we canât leave any stone unturned. And I think we should check all of them, despite what he claims.âÂ
âI agree, boys,â Constantine hoarsely interjected.Â
âDonât even act like you helped us at all. You knew about all of this and never said a word to me about it! And you had Bastien fucking me around this entire time!â Liam bellowed.Â
Constantine let out a slow breath and spoke in a low, quiet voice. âI understand youâre upset. However, I truly thought she safely returned to New York. Bastien mentioned none of these things to me, nor you. Granted, perhaps I should have stayed more on top of the situation. I was aware of the deaths, but you never told me there was foul play involved or that you suspected Bastien. If you had come to me sooner, I would have told you what I knew.âÂ
âYeah, I bet you would have.â Liam huffed. Â
âI would have, Liam. I never meant for this to happen â all I wanted was to ensure you and Cordonia would be safe after Iâm gone. It was my duty as Cordoniaâs kingââÂ
âNo, it wasnât! And youâre behind Olivia leaving too?âÂ
âSheâs far too irrational to sit on the throne, Liam. I knew if you had her as an option, you would choose her.â Constantineâs face contorted as the knife in his chest suddenly twisted. He somehow pushed through it, but the pain only flourished, alternating between sharp, sudden jabs and a dull, throbbing ache. âYou still tried to select her, but I assumed she would speak to you and not leave without saying a word.â He breathed, his face turning a bright shade of pink.
âI donât understand somethingââ Leo spoke with furrowed brows. âWhy was all Rileyâs stuff in Applewood?âÂ
âI didnât have any part of that. I was not interested in taking things from her â I only wanted her to leave.â He wheezed. Liam and Leo both continued to glare at him, but their fury and curiosity blinded them from seeing their fatherâs deteriorating state.
âOne more,â Leo went on. âIf you were behind the scandal, whyâd you drop it during the coronation of all moments?âÂ
âThat was the only hiccup in the ordeal that I knew of; the timing. I realized Liam would have an adverse reaction, but it was supposed to be released early enough to give him some time to let the general shock wear off.â Constantine rasped, and thatâs when Leo finally took notice of his fatherâs struggles. Despite his sideways feelings, a surge of concern bolted through him.Â
âWowâŚâ Liam spoke before Leo could address their father's state. He shook his head, tears of rage and devastation stinging the corners of his eyes. âYou played me like a goddamn fiddle and I let it happen. You had everything planned out, down to my emotional needs.â He indignantly laughed, the sound sending waves of uncertainty through everyone.Â
âI â Iâm sorry, son. I regret what Iâve done, and I hope one day youâll be able to forgive me for getting caught up in thisââÂ
âDonât hold your fucking breath.â Liam snapped.Â
âIâm willing to do whatever I can to help you find her, Liam.â Constantine held a shaky hand over his chest as the pain intensified, momentarily taking his breath away. Leo rose to his feet, torn between his brother's wrath and his father's struggles, but Liam continued before he concluded what to do.
âHow can I trust you? You knew about all of this! I think you know much more than youâre leading on, too!âÂ
Constantineâs mind raced so fast, but he tried with all his might to fight off whatever was happening within his body. âIâve told you all I know, son. I will gladly assist you in any way possible from here on out.âÂ
âYouâre going to be lucky if you donât wind up in the infirmary next to Bastien, or worse,â Liam snarled as he slowly rose from his seat. âWho?âÂ
âPardon?âÂ
âWho was it? Who came to you that night in Lythikos?â Liam stalked toward him with his hands balled into fists at his sides, his steps loud and menacing. He didnât even notice Constantineâs struggles â all he saw was the monster who destroyed his life and decimated everything heâd ever cared about. âThis is your only chance to come clean because if I have to ask again, you wonât like how I get the answer.â He scowled.Â
Constantine stumbled upright and took another ragged breath, but realized he was no longer getting any airflow. He coughed, but his hands flew to his neck after, helplessly clawing at his throat. He suddenly gasped for air and grabbed at the front of Liamâs shirt, his knees buckling under his body weight. His eyes were nearly black as the dilation swallowed his iris, but his sclera was tinted with a bright shade of pink.
âWhat theââ Liam started, but soon recognized the problem. Constantineâs complexion somehow went from a shade of red to white within an instant, his gasps becoming more panic-laced by the second. One moment they were face-to-face, but the fear Liam saw staring back at him momentarily took him aback; it wasnât a terror rooted around being caught, but something much deeper. His body tensed, the hands securely holding onto his jacket turning white and shaking from the intensity of the seizing. Constantine choked on his saliva, struggling for air, but soon let out an anguished, blood-curdling cry.
The next instant, Constantine crumpled to the floor, his entire body going limp.
Before Liam or Leo could register what happened, the guard stationed close by was already on site. The man spoke into his earpiece and summoned medical professionals to their location, a frenzy of lights approaching in the distance nearly instantly. Constantineâs eyes were open but nobody was home, and before too long, the man had no choice but to start CPR.Â
Liam could only stand, frozen in place, unable to focus on anything else. He wanted to look away so badly, but couldnât gather the strength. He felt every push against his fatherâs chest as if it were his own, and his pulse soon matched the rhythm of the compressions. An overabundance of emotions filtered through him; betrayal, fear, anger, regret, and guilt. Constantine shredded their bond into a million pieces, and he couldnât find it within him to be sad; he desperately wanted to feel any inkling of remorse that his father might have just taken his final breath right before him, but he wasnât, and that made him question if he was a monster in disguise all along, too.
He fixated on the fact that Constantine knew who did this and, right now, he wasnât sure he would get to hear that tale. His heart yearned for Riley, but every time he got even a drop of information, he only met an abrupt wall. Heâd almost grown accustomed to having the tiny shrivels of hope dangled in his face and then yanked away, but this time, he couldnât simply shake it off and pretend like they had the situation under control, because they didnât.
The abyss of insanity Liam teetered for so long pulled itself dangerously closer. His father had aggressive, end-stage lung cancer, and something like this should come as no surprise. But â for his clock to stop ticking at that exact moment seemed too convenient and at some point, the term coincidence just couldnât apply anymore. Any other time, he wouldnât have questioned it, but he instantly fell into a pit of madness as he internally debated the facts.
He couldnât decide if this was nature taking its course, or a different force pulling strings.Â
