The Price of the Phoenix
I'm about halfway through The Price of the Phoenix and it is wild. It's a very Spirky fever dream, or rather a nightmare. It's really dark. I'm honestly confused about what's happening but I'm enjoying it. It feels more like an Ao3 fic than a novel that was published 50 years ago.
Warning: there are a lot of spoilers below.
Basically, Omne is a giant, Vulcanoid, megalomaniac who is in charge of a planet near the Neutral Zone. It's oddly wild west themed. Omne doesn't like The Federation and its hyprocrisy. Kirk is essentially the embodiment of what he doesn't like about The Federation. Kirk dies in a fire on the planet but was cloned by Omne. It's later revealed that Kirk didn't die and the dead Kirk was a clone. So now there are two living Kirks. He called Kirk his property and merchandise and wants to own him forever (yeah...it's as concerning as it sounds). Spock and the Romulan commander (from The Enterprise Incident) have to rescue Kirk. That's all I can explain, really.

Triumvirate Prompts
Day 8 - Favourite TOS Episode?
This is a super hard question, especially since it changes all the time but I think I have to go with the "The Enterprise Incident".
Tumblr media
I know season 3 gets a lot of heat for the quality of its episodes but I think this one is super fun.
Love that Spock has to go undercover, Jim dressing up as a Romulan, Jim's fake out death, the Vulcan death grip, McCoy's dismay at Spock "killing Jim", Romulans and just how massive and ridiculous the clocking device is but the real reason I love this episode so much...
Her
Tumblr media
The Romulan Commander.
Literally doesn't have a name and she's my favourite villain. All her scenes with Spock are great and what can I say I love a girl boss who girl bossed too close to the sun. Also I genuinely feel sorry for her when she gets stuck on the Enterprise at the end, even though she probably sucks.
Also amazing taste in fashion.

Love this dress so much!

[Description: A Tiered meme, titled “if I was a worm, would you still love me?” Below is a table with two columns; the first column listing different answers to the question, and the second holding characters from the classic era of Star Trek who fit the response. They are as follows:
“Absolutely fucking not,” with pictures of Lieutenant Kevin Riley, Yeoman Janice Rand, and Mirror!Marlena Moreau
“You are not a worm shut up,” with pictures of Dr McCoy, Spock, Sarek, and T’Pring
“I would eat you like the fish,” with Scotty.
“depends what type of worm??” with pictures of Uhura and Nurse Chapel
“yes :) <3″ with pictures of Captain Kirk and Amanda Grayson
“I would build you a home in a jar. with a little house. talk to you every day,” with pictures of Sulu, Sybok, and The Romulan Commander
“what if we were both worms… and we kissed…” with a picture of Pavel Chekov

I've noticed that typical Vulcan men do not appear to wear the iconic blue shimmery eyeshadow, while Vulcan women do and with glossy pink lipstick too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where as it seems that Romulan men do, in fact, wear eyeshadow. It seems to be an important enough part of their culture that when they put it on Jim too when Bones disguised him as a Romulan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But you know who also wears eyeshadow (and pink lipstick)? Mister Spock!
Tumblr media
Like look! Their makeups literally match. It's very interesting that both Romulan men and women wear makeup, but only Vulcan women seem wear makeup (well maybe the men do too we've just never seen any). And if Romulans and Vulcans have a common ancestor, does it mean that historical Vulcan men did wear makeup? Is Spock doing ancient Vulcan makeup to prove that he's like soooo totally Vulcan? What does it all mean, am I just tin foil hatting 🤔

I wonder if in 'the balance of terror' Spock saw the romulan commander and got really fucking freaked out because, ..... that's his dad? on a ROMULAN vessel?
like.... not just seeing these people WHO NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN BEFORE AND THEY LOOK LIKE YOU?! but also the guy leading them has an uncanny resemblance to your father with whom you haven't spoken for ~20 years
i think i would fucking lose it at that point, man.

My thoughts exactly.
As much as I love all the adoring glances, another favorite Kirk face of mine is the one he makes when anyone so much as hints at an interest in Spock.
He always looks so affronted. Like, "excuse me? are you referring to my first officer?!"
Romulan Commander: I must admit... some surprise on seeing you, Spock?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Garth: Your friend Spock is a logical man... a very logical man

human things I think Romulans would be good at:
incredibly long and disciplined D&D campaigns
participating in toxic stan twitter
cybersecurity attacks
alpine skiing
geocaching
long-term reconnaissance
academia
insider trading
working at Lockheed Martin
binge-watching succession
trespassing
pushing their limits at a demilitarized zone

**I included characters significant to one episode who I see referenced in fandom/fanfiction fairly regularly, yet who never appeared in other pieces of Star Trek media (not including novelizations of those episodes or beta canon)

I read The Price of the Phoenix and The Fate of the Phoenix last week. They're wild and confusing but I love them. I highly recommend them.
What I like about them:
The Romulan commander from The Enterprise Incident is a total badass. I love her so much.
Politics are really important in these books. They criticize The Federation and its policies, specifically The Prime Directive. I love Star Trek but this criticism is valid.
Lots of worldbuilding for Romulans specifically matriarchal Romulans.
Omne is a fascinating villain. He has complex motives, is effortlessly manipulative, and is truly terrifying. It's concerningly easy to forget how terrible he is. In a lot of ways, he reminds me of Garth in Whom Gods Destroy. Omne makes Kirk kneel and call him "my lord". Sounds familiar...
The Spirkiness is off the chart.
Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath have a good understanding of Star Trek and write the characters accurately. Kirk has to rely on his intellect, rhetorical skills, and acting abilities.
They reference several episodes including, Whom Gods Destroy, A Piece of the Action, and Elaan of Troyius. I also love how they write mind melds.
TW: These books are quite dark. If they got adapted into a movie, they'd be rated R. There's a lot of violence, including nonconsensual mind melds and heavily implied literal SA, mentions of slavery/human trafficking, and other things I'm probably forgetting. With that in mind, I really do recomend them.
