last song: i am currently listening to patd's cover of the greatest show haha my playlist is on shuffle. when i hit post on this, the song playing is america's suitehearts by fall out boy. everyone please check out manofbeskar's mishanks band au fic, bc it got me listening to fob's folie à deux album for literally three months straight. tho i've loved america's suitehearts since it came out in 2009ish, i've only come to appreciate the rest of the album this year 'cuz of manofbeskar so thank you. 🙏

(i lied, i typed that but then spent so long triple-checking my answers the playlist's moved onto asymptotic by louie zong. what's this, rei? u have a fic rec for this song too? here's a haikyuu!! matsuhana math team au i love dearly. the fic reminds me of the song, except ofc it's a happy ending, unlike in the song aha.)

favorite color: red & golden yellow :) i'm a warm colour palette typea gal. i even prefer my cool colours warm-toned lol. they feel richer to me when they're warmer.

last book: i'm somewhat ashamed to say it's been a VERY long time since i read a real book. i tackled a short french YA one like, last year? 'cuz i borrowed it from my friend and i'd wanted to to return it. i can rec u an ongoing 300+k bloodweave fic i just finished that i can't stop thinkin' about tho.

last movie: i watched the wild robot w my dad recently. super cute! another movie in the list of movies that tell me to my face that i will always fall in love with sly and charming rogue types that deep down only want to be loved. 🥺💕

last tv show: been watching the ravening war dimension 20 dnd campaign! if that doesn't count, i've also been watching dandadan every week (last week's episode tho!!! SO good omg).

sweet/spicy/savory: savoury most of the time, but also sometimes sweet. very rarely spicy, but not unheard of.

relationship status: single ✌️ i'm a mess and probably demi lmao.

last thing I googled: SPOILERS FOR NYT CONNECTIONS but i was googling crab types. comb crab? not a thing. ❌️ fiddler crabs, however! ✅️

current obsession: oh god, uh. astarion. it's astarion ancunín from bg3. my camera roll is filling up and it used to be so i could draw mihawk in his outfits but now it's just 'cuz astarion's hair is stupid pretty. please see also: my previous answer about rogue types who only want to be loved.

ah, also been getting more into dnd in general--(re)started bc of watching neil newbon (astarion's voice actor; i know, i know, but HE'S SO GOOD AT HIS JOB) doing an actual play one shot as astarion with sam béart who voices karlach (yes, okay, i am like every other bisexual and fell for the pretty rogue vampire and the big red barbarian with biceps for days okay), but also brennan lee mulligan and aabria iyengar, both of whom i love. and then i graduated to watching the bg3 cast's other APs and also mismag s2 and now the ravening war. it's a slippery slope. and my cousin wants to run a one-shot campaign so now i've got a guy too! his name is lysander and he's a dragonborn fighter. 🐲⚔️🔥

(here's the one-shot i'm talking about btw! aabria is the gm, and the table is neil and sam playing astarion and karlach, and then brennan lee mulligan and anjali bhimani who play some really great pc's! neil & sam refer to the story in the halloween one-shot they do with the va's of wyll and lae'zel later on, too. it's cute!)

I feel like this is just SO self indulgent of me but whatever I guess lmao, bks is my brain baby currently and I will take any excuse to talk about it. These posts are going to be long in-depth dives into my writing process, dress inspo, music i was inspired by, etc. of the mentioned chapters so settle in cause this is what i'm doing today lol. also this might be the longest one bc i'm gonna talk about starting and coming up with everything.

starting writing and original outlines :

i've said this so many times lmao but i wrote the ending first. like the ending ending. i work really long hours at a job that has me listening to music for like ten hours a day while i work so i get a lot of thinking time lmao. basically i originally wrote it as a story with no specific characters in mind. I'm a big Pedro fan so i was between characters i thought fit the fic but settled on din because i think he fit the character i was imagining best. (it helps that he's in my top three pedro characters lol) from there laid out a vague outline in my mind of where i wanted to start so i created a set list of characters and basically just dove right in without much to guide me except for an ending point lmao. it wasnt until closer to like chapter 15-16 when i started properly outline each chapter in advance in the document, before that i just wrote vague notes in a notebook that i didn't end up following all that well lmao

i've also said this at one point but the original name of best kept secret was "my keeper and i" i wrote the first three chapters in the same week and spread out the posting but i used the same playlist for most of the early stuff so here's that!!

inspirations :

if you've seem/read bridgerton then you might know that i took a lot of inspiration from the pattern the show uses and still do.

basically the show has a pattern of the couple getting together and breaking it off or having an issue that's resolved and then there's a new issue. i've sort of been following that sorta kinda

also reader is heavily based on charlotte because i had just finished queen charlotte when i started writing bks

din is more based on anthony bridgerton than george, (anyone unfamiliar with bridgerton, george is the love interest in queen charlotte)

also a lot of din's style of self loathing is based on edwards from twilight LMAO

notes :

here are my chapter four notes! shoutout to when i didn't realize it was sarad'ika and it was originally ika sarad lmaooo

there's some unused dialogue here, specifically there was going to be a longer conversation about how he wanted to get her out of the castle more often as well as a scene where she was going to eat fruit ands it was gonna drip down her front and he was gonna wipe it off. it was gonna be a whole thing lmao but it didn't really fit the rest of the chapters vibe.

so.... originally there was a timeline issue where the first lunar interlude (i'm a huge taz balance fan and that's where i got the name lunar interlude from lmaoooo, i have 2 taz tattoos) was going to be chapter 4 and then it was going to be chapter 6 and then it made the most sense to make it 5, so any timeline notes here are wrong.

in my original concept for the fic, every chapter was going to end with a small portion of din pov, but it didn't flow well and i really didn't like it so it ended up being easier having it be specific chapters.

when writing the first lunar interlude i went through and read the previous chapters and wrote down how i thought he was feeling during each scene which is what these notes are ^

and this is the sort of jewelry i was picturing but this stuff is still pretty, i couldn't find anything as ugly as what i was picturing for her wedding jewelry.

this is the sort of stuff i pictured for her blue dresses she hates but honestly all of these are pretty as well LMAO. in all honesty i think that the blue dresses she doesn't like wearing are probably pretty i think she mostly just hates what they stand for and also they put her in gaudy makeup and jewelry as well which doesn't help

Get To Know Me Tag Game

The lovely Batty @missbattyao3 tagged me in this like 2 weeks ago and I've been waiting to get on my computer to do it, but atp the adhd may prevail and I'll forget so just gonna do my best on the app. Haven't done something like this in ages, thought it'd be fun.

Last Song: I tend to pick a song/playlist on Spotify and just let the ai do its thing when I'm working and need background music. So, according to Spotify the last song played was Dusk and Summer by Dashboard Confessional

Favorite Color: sage green and black have been my go to answers for over a decade

Last Book: I'm currently listening to the Songbirds & Snakes (Suzanne Collins) audio book. Last e-book I read was The Nightmare before Kissmass (Sara Raasch)- though I listed to the audio book of this right after finishing and both were a great time and I HIGHLY recommend. Last physical book I read was Ariadne (Jennifer Saint).

Last Movie: rewatched A Knight's Tale with the bestie. Man I really love this movie.

Last TV show: I finally watched Yuri on Ice in the year of our lord 2025 (this weekend) and am pissed at myself for not having given in when it was first coming out. I've been on the periphery of the fandom for so long and legit didn't think they were actually just like that for the entire canon. Omg! Binged that in literally one sitting and can now wallow with the rest of you.

The only show I'm actively keeping up with right now though is 911.

Sweet/Spicy/Savory: usually I'd be all for sweet, but lately my body has been betraying me and I've been leaning spicy all the way. Hopefully I recover from this madness soon. (End captains log)

Relationship Status: Single. Dating has never been for me and that's just that lol.

Last Thing I Googled: What Species of Bear was the largest. Someone sent me a message asking if I'd heard of the giant white polar bear and my brain legit went "aren't they all giant bc they're the biggest ursa species?" But alas it was a silly icebreaker setup and not at all about the bears in question.

Current Obsession: Not gonna lie, if fanfic is ever not the answer to that question you might wanna check on me. Currently pretty honed in on the Steddie train, but I have at least 1 tab open with Sterek, Merthur, and SnowBaz fics open just waiting for the mood to strike up again.

Though actually, Epic the musical had been pretty heavy in the rotation for the last couple months.

I've returned! I'm listening to Hozier rn and bc my brain is Good Omens now, I've been thinking about a lot of his songs in context of the show and they fit soo painfully well.

In this essay (not really) I'd like to point out some songs that you can add to your GO playlists as well as just talk about Hozier and his lyrics for a bit bc outside of the context of GO bc they are gorgeous and this is my post goddammit.

- Unkown/Nth - this is first in my list bc it is calling to me rn and fits the best with the emotional beats of season 2. It discusses the fear of being unknown in a relationship, for the one you love to not see you for who you are.

Let's not forget to mention that this song is representative of the 9th circle of hell - the Treachery Circle - circle of betrayal. Getting into an elevator to go to heaven and leaving your demon bf is a bit treacherous Az, sry.

GO aside this song is beautiful, it is so earnest and wonderfully captures the feeling of not being seen in a relationship, having the other person just completely unaware of who you really are. And of course, stabbing you in the back too.

Just listen to it, its great.

- Of course we have the gem: From Eden - Crown of the collection. This song is about the snake that tempted Eve in the garden of Eden (and many other things besides). The lyrics are perf for GO, given the context and the chorus "Honey, you're familiar, like my mirror years ago" invokes nostalgia, perhaps of being an angel? And the line about going "to the strand, a picnic planned for you and me" just gives me feels bc we know our boys love a good picnic. "I slithered here from eden just to sit outside your door" okay Crowley.

- Take Me To Church - I feel the need to include this as I feel people will ask if I don't. I don't get A/C feels per se from this, but I understand why it is brought up a lot (other than being on Crowleys playlist), as it does discuss the hypocrisy of the Church and how they use your sins against you for their own gain.

- All Things End - sounds like "nothing lasts forever" 😭 I see the lyrics to this being about a relationship not working out, despite those partaking in it wanting it to and trying to give it another shot. It also talks about everything ending, and despite changing this - this should not change our plans - sounds v 2nd coming-y to meee.

- Francesca: Love the lyrics to this one, it explores themes of love, its endurance and power in the midst of challenges that would most likely shake others devotion. The very last paragraph speaks to me - it sounds light compared to the rest of the songs and I'll let the lyrics speak for themselves:

The Ballad of Mr Steak - Kishi Bashi. weird lyrics, phenomenal violin playing, groovy synth. I've had one or two kishi bashi songs in my playlists for a few years but recently decided to expand and listen to more of his discography and found this banger right away

American Blood - Passion Pit. new music from passion pit my best friend passion pit???? in 2023??? yes and he nails it again <3

Pink Pony Club - Chappell Roan. this one is brand new to me - I attended a burlesque show and one of the performers danced to this song - but it's SUCH an earworm. it's also conveniently right in my vocal range so i've been singing it a lot.

Hot Pink - Cousin Tony's Brand New Firebird. my local college radio station played this song a while back and this entire album has been on repeat ever since, but this one is still my fave. the singer's voice is so deep and rich.

Kids with Guns - Gorillaz. currently making and listening to a playlist for my beloved OC Nimble, who was raised in a crime family and started holding a gun at a pretty young age.

Capacity - Charly Bliss. another band with a really distinct lead singer, but in the opposite direction - both girlish and grungy, high and tinged with vocal fry. the rest of the band also slaps.

songs 9 and 10 on my list are repeat artists (another Charly Bliss song and another Cousin Tony's Brand New Firebird) so I'm breaking the pattern to plug two songs from lower on the list. Cold Cold Man by Saint Motel has been stuck in my head for days (that piano opening is so catchy!), and Can't Behave by Courtney Jaye is my current go to sing in the shower song - this is another one gifted to me by the campus radio station and shazam.

actually im curious. for people who make playlists what is their preferred method and also like. what they're making playlists for. i think my playlists r divided into abt 5 categories:

1: playlists that compile work of an artist or smthing like it. ofc u can simply go to an artist you follow and click liked songs but 1) this includes all liked albums even if not all of the individual songs in that album is liked iirc, and 2) sometimes bands have like. members that do solo work and so the song isnt listed under the band name but i personally wanna compile it in the playlist. there's also people like gigaP who i have a playlist for, because he's not listed as an artist for a lot of songs he does production on, and i wanna compile that. and then also theres stuff like. compiling all of the sonic music i like.

2: organizer playlists. stuff like. i like to separate my songs by language just because. and for japanese-language music i break that down into 1) these are openings 2) this is music from a gacha game 3) this is vocaloid music 4) all the stuff that is none of the above. if i want everything i shuffle the folder (tho spotify mobile doesnt seem to have that ability...) or things like, here is a playlist with all of the classical music i listen to. one with all the video game ost. one with all the anime ost. etc. 3: themed playlists. this feels pretty standard, its just like. this playlist has songs that represent a season, this one has gender fuckery, this one is sorta vibey and chill, etc.

4: fandom / story playlists: this is the one i'm interested in!! i think this has a variety of how it works--saw a poll about whether character playlists are made thinking about what music the character would canonically be into, and that blew my mind bc i'd absolutely never thought about that. but i've also never made a character playlist (yet) bc my fandom playlists are like... "story" playlists? so some are just like. fic playlists that compile songs i think fit with the story lyrically and/or vibe-wise, and some are like, here's a playlist abt a relationship i like, and the songs are ordered to show like the chronology of the actual media and each couple of songs represent a different arc / time period etc. i'm not always that detailed, so I've got some that don't necessarily follow a chronology, but with these I tend to build them by writing a google doc with the songs + one quote of a lyric that i think fits, and then I tend to add extra notes on the rest of the song and how it fits with my ideas. why i do it i couldn't tell you because the documents are mostly for me lol. anyways that's all

Sometimes!! When I was really on a roll writing TGBD a while back I had just been reminded of an Andrew Bird album from when I was a kid and started listening to it on repeat, so now listening to that album helps me get back in the same mood

14. If you could see one of your fics adapted into a visual medium, such as comic or film, which fan fic would you pick?

Easily one of my Spider-Man fics tbh. Black Light's plot (the first fic I ever wrote and finished, and i have noooo idea how it holds up) would make a pretty good adaptation tbh

Since I know the conference episode is about to make us all feral, I thought it would be fun to talk about the conference I just went to in case anyone needs some inspo. for fics!!

The conference I just went to was a writing center conference, and I road-tripped with two of my friends to the hotel. We had lots of fun, listening to the specific playlist someone made ghffvgh and daring to check out how cringe our Spotify blend was! We also stopped at a tourist trap before we got to the hotel and happily dicked around.

That first night at the hotel, I had to stay in their room because rooms booked up quick! Afterwards, I stayed in my own place because I sleep better alone and need to have some solitary time to recharge. But still, we had a lot of fun!! We brought our own booze (bc the hotel bar was stupidly expensive) and snacks, though we ate dinner at the hotel’s grill. We explored the hotel and checked out the meeting rooms where conference panels, presentations, etc. would be. (The hotel was REALLY BIG, so the conference was held in it!) We caught a movie in the hotel’s theater and laughed at how unintentionally campy it was. And that night, we stayed up watching a David Attenborough nature documentary series. We all accidentally fell asleep before turning it off QKWNSNS, so I woke up at 1AM to a jump scare of hearing David’s voice still going.

The next morning, the conference officially began, and we went to get our name tags and packets from the registration desk. (The packets basically just have the conference program, lists of places to eat around the city, and other useful information.) In one of the ballrooms, they were serving free coffee and pastries before presentations began in earnest.

With conferences, you look at the program and read descriptions for presentations, round tables, or panels that are going on at different time slots, and you go to the ones that sound most interesting to you. Sometimes, my friends and I would split up and go to different sessions, so we were all learning different material, and we could compare notes later! Sometimes, we went to the same ones. Regardless, it was all so fascinating, and I was enthralled by the hundred of new ideas I was getting from presenters! I’m an assistant director (as is one of my friends, while the other is a program administrator), and after sessions, we were constantly talking about how to implement suggestions we’d heard into our own writing center.

Presentations and the like usually last ‘til around 4, and then they have some sort of closing social event. That night, it was some sort of meet-and-greet, which I skipped out on to go check into my own hotel room and rest up because I was all socialed out. The friends and I ordered a pizza that night and mostly just hung out in one of our hotel rooms.

The next day was more of the same, attending presentations and other events. For instance, there was a great lunch in a big ballroom where Italian food was catered, and they had a live band. The entire group from my university’s writing center sat together and hung out! The lunch ended with a keynote speaker assuming the podium and giving a thirty-minute lecture emphasizing how standardized grammar excludes vernaculars!! It was excellent! (Most, if not all conferences, have keynote speakers, who are like the headliners of the conference, and they lecture on something exceptionally relevant to the theme of the conference.)

That evening, there was a state-specific meeting that my writing center director chaired remotely from Zoom! It was a good chance to network with folks from other writing centers in the area. Because really, alongside learning from fellow scholars, that’s definitely what a conference is all about, networking with people outside of your university! Lol, there was also a grad school mixer that night that I actually went to for the free drink and because I’d hit it off with a couple of folks from a different university. We just talked about different things we did at our writing centers and exchanged ideas.

The next day, the last day of the conference, it was my groups’ turns to present! I helped to moderate a roundtable on tutor bonding at 8AM, which is a bad slot, lmao, because no one is awake yet, but the people who were there were very engaged! I was super nervous at first because this was my first time presenting at an academic conference, but once I got going, I chilled into myself more! I was talking about how I’d set up a Discord for our writing center, and one person was super into it!!! They made one for their writing center because of it!

At 12, I was also a part of a panel about inclusivity in the writing center! This one, I was way more nervous for because it was better attended AND more formal than the roundtable, but same idea here. Once I got going, I was fine! I did the intro and the practical applications at the end, while my friends covered the middle sections. It went really well too, and there was a lot of interesting discussion afterwards.

Before we drove home, everyone from my writing center stopped and grabbed lunch from a very cool pub, and then we were on the road again. I was silent for at least an hour, just completely socially exhausted, lol, and my friends were clearly tired too. It was a great experience, but you really have to be at your most personable for so long!! I’m glad that I got to experience it, though. It was a genuinely wonderful time.

this is a song that makes me want to like. drive through the city at nighttime w my roof down and my best friend in the passenger seat. literally love the strokes so so much and the guitar and the drums in this one are just chefs kiss to me! i’m a sucker for a good guitar + drums pairing. reveling in my male manipulator moment whenever the strokes come on (+ the way he says “moscow 1972” just tickles my brain so good)

GOD. i have so many feelings about billie marten and idk how to articulate them all but this song is literally like extra strength advil in auditory form. it’s so soothing and the acoustic guitar in this makes me wish i could sing so bad !! i listen to this + the whole album when i’m feeling tired or exhausted or stressed and i swear it flushes any pain right out of my body. would recommend to anyone no matter what genres you’re into !!

Oh boy I have not updated this side blog in a long-ass time, but for this playlist more than the others, I wanted to talk through the songs chosen for this one because they’re a lot more curated than my other playlists and are very entwined with specific headcanons I had so rip this headcanon dump.

(also I did not think in the year of our lord 2021 and 10 years of being on this hell site id finally cave and actually publish the anime shit i write instead of leaving them to die in my folders)

I made this playlist with the headcanon that Nanami grew up as a cassette teen and migrated over to vinyls as a salaryman and invested in a technics direct drive turntable to match his technics amplifier this shit is expensive holy fuck as a way to unwind while reading, drinking, and cooking. 

Quite a few of the songs here are songs I own/have listened to on vinyl and lemme tell you the vibes are PRISTINE and 100% songs he’d play while cooking for u on a chill, domestic dinner-date. 

also since being bullied into watching jjk i cant listen to streets without thinking about nanami like the man has ideal husband printed all over his novelty patterned tie

(but specifically this remix bc he really do be classic gentleman in the streets and unhinged in the sheets) (but also maybe listened to some paul anka with his danish granddad as a kid and some 60s music hence dusty springfield and astrud giberto)

i also think his mother got him to listen to abba bc she liked that as a kid and abba popped off with their tour of japan in the 70s also voulez vous is best album but this is a whole other fanfic shh

smooth operator is kinda there as a meme but its also a VIBE bc he really do move in space with minimum waste and maximum joy city lights and business nights when you require streetcar desires and higher heights

2006 Nanami is also the most emo-looking piece of shit I have ever beheld and having been alive in 2006 it triggered my flight or fight instincts. Granted I was in primary school but my cousins were all that age and as soon as I saw that.... boi..... I could smell hair being fried by a ghd straightener so they could sit in those bangs. Either way he definitely vibed the he was a punk (aesthetically) part of sk8er boi and so some rock bands made their way into the list. 

The rock songs (loosely rock? idk spotify always tells me they are) for this playlist were definitely more ballad and romantic to match the rest of the playlist both in melody and lyrics

I highly recommend looking up the English translation for the lyrics to Coraline which I think goes well with his sense of morality and his character 

The first and last songs are the theme songs Gege chose out for him and were listed in a volume of the manga. I hadn’t listened to either of them until I put together this playlist (and honestly felt validated for the vibes i chose out).  

Saboten Record, Us and Them, Sign of the Times, and Time in a Bottle (and a couple of others via some lyrics) are there bc of time being a recurring theme with Nanami BUT ALSO I LIVE IN DENIAL OF THE SH*BUYA ARC IT NEVER HAPPENED EVERYONES FINE

I also have a nanami x reader fic coming up!!!! it’s multichapter bc i hate myself and want to commit to the full plot potential!!! V domestic and in denial about said sh*buya arc and honestly veering into crack fic territory but honestly I think it’s time I returned to my roots by writing a crack fic masquerading as something serious. There will be cooking and Gojo derailment of any and all plot.

playing okay so you know how some people (not me) meal prep? i have realized that knowing ahead of time what i want to eat for lunch is helpful, bc most of my job right now is deciding where different bits of information go. and the decision fatigue is at like eleven by the time lunch rolls around.

just as i have to literally write “walkies” on my to-do list, i have realized i literally need to prep funtimes to decompress from work. this week, this has looked like finally installing itch.io on the work pc and going through the six gigantic bundles i bought for various charitable reasons, filing things into various folders to play later.

anyway that’s how i rediscovered depanneur nocturne (which i also apparently bought on steam at some point?), which i pitched to @andmaybegayer​ as: a tiny cozy game about exploring a magic shop/convenience store to find a gift for your partner who is a deer.

the vibes in this one are Just Nice! a very nice little game that made me quite happy and content for the rest of the evening. the poster work on the walls was absolutely fucking baller, and your partner who is a deer and the shopkeep who is a salamander witch are delightful. not saccharine sweet like some cozy games are, where they’re quite smug about ~*being wholesome*~ and ~*self care*~. this was like a slice of life episode from an anime you half remember and will never find again.
