The way I hyper focused on this and got it done even if I couldn't see the screen through my tears

a mage and an assassin.
a human prince and an elven warrior.
the first human in history to connect to not one but two Arcanums and use magic, and the elf who took a stand against the most powerful (at the time) dark mage.
the high mage of katolis and the last dragon guard.

remember this scene in the Great Bookery, with callum lighting the arrow with a spell and rayla firing it?
...what a power couple.

couple who are both “promise to never put me before the world” types but one is “promise you will choose not to save me” and the other is “promise you’ll kill me”

thinking about how every time Miyana expresses a concern or reservation, Karim doesn't listen to her (and gets his ass handed to him) vs every time (but esp in arc 2) Rayla expresses a concern or reservation, Callum listens to her and usually switches gears and things work out better in the end

"elf sad" Clip Analysis!!!
Tumblr media
(I don't know what else to call it, that is literally the caption for the video T_T)
TDP finally posted the clip from s6e1 where Aaravos sobs into the water, so let's analyze it!!
The first thing I want to point out is the reflection symbolism and ripples symbolism. In Ripples (the short story), we get the following line:
Tumblr media
In other words, ripples ruin the reflection of the stars. (Tangentially related, but we have also seen many occasions of Aaravos himself ruining reflections, which I've written about here). However, in this scene, we first have view of the water, and the tears hitting the water. Aaravos then appears on the screen, first as a reflection that is blurred by the ripples created by his tears. The camera only pans up to the reflection's caster later in the scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AKA, the ripples are CREATING the reflection of a star.
I also love the way that he looks at his reflection, and then looks away towards the stars when he finds that he's not glowing. It appears to me to be a mix of guilt and anguish. The fact that he can't bear to look at his own reflection and looks to the stars instead is... interesting.
Tumblr media
Another thing that I think is worth pointing out in this clip is the Rayllum parallels with Aaravos and the Merciful One. This scene is so similar to the scene in The Midnight Desert when Rayla was self deprecating and looking at the water, and Callum was telling her to shut up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rayla and Aaravos are both crying into their reflections, and Callum and The Merciful One are trying to pull them out of it. We don't have much info on what is going on in the new scene, but to me it seems to be around the time of the formation of the Sea of Castout/when Aaravos lost his powers. So, in this case, Rayla and Aaravos are both learning that they are "ghosted" or "cast out"--pretty much, exiled from their community. Callum and The Merciful One are both shocking them out of the tears. (I do think Callum was more effective than The Merciful One's weird cryptic words, though ;)).
I'm so excited for this season! The imagery and visual motifs are already excellent, can't wait to see what else season 6 brings!!

anyone ever think about how the tdp fanbase literally created some of the most prominent plot points and parallels in the whole show? (maybe not actually but def heavily contributed)
the creators were like “we didn’t even consider rayllum until the fans started shipping them” and they just fucking RAN with that. nice work my fellow rayllum stans 👍

I know everyone is pushing for a potential season 8, 9, and 10, but I'm of the mind that we shouldn't. As sad as I would be to see tdp end, i really think it would benefit from a true, clear ending. For instance, we might not have had such an amazing ending in ATLA if they had convinced Nickelodeon it needed to go longer. We might not have had Legend of Korra (and korrasami) if ATLA had a season 4, 5, and 6.
I'm all for wonderstorm getting more work from Netflix, I just think it would be better as a new project (like tdp was when they first pitched it)

Isn't it so loaded that we got Rayla saving three different characters from "corruption" this season? Esmeray with a lullaby about love‚ with Runaan telling him that she loves and needs him and Callum with being his guiding star because they love each other so much.
Which makes you think... Rayla saving Callum in s7 may be a combination of all three.
Because this time she will not choose love by leaving out of duty (killing him)‚ she will choose love by staying (saving him).

will probably write a bigger meta about it later (and how it fits into Callum’s series’ arc so far) but one of my favourite things about the “I would do anything for you” line - beyond the sheer fact that we got it and the parallels too - is that Callum emphasizes this willingness is something that has always been there.
Callum: Rayla, we’ve been through a lot. And a lot has changed. Ah, well, some things have changed, but not everything. I would do anything for you.
Very very shortly after meeting her - and it wouldn’t surprise me if the 2x03 mourning hug was the turning point - Callum realized that she was family to him and the tier he put her on just grew and grew until she was on the same level to him as one other person: his brother. And everything he’s done since then has been the natural result of that world shattering, reckless, deep love he holds for his inner circle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a lot of ways I feel like Callum accepting this dark part of himself (and the fear/uncertainty of how far it could lead) is him realizing not that he’s becoming like Viren and Claudia, but realizing and accepting that he’s always been like them, which is worse to him, somehow. That’s what scares him, because he’s seen first hand what they’ve become, even if he doesn’t know firsthand what they’ve done.
But as Callum says - this part of him hasn’t changed. And it seems like he knows/fears, on a certain level, that it never can.
