The Shetland Pony

The Shetland Pony is a quintessentially English creation— a no-frills horse that reels you in with a charming accent and chaotic shaggy hair so that when you realize what a fucking asshole it is, IT IS TOO LATE. The Shetland Pony is the exact opposite of what its appearance promises. You think you’re getting a cute child’s pony. What you get instead is 600-pound hellbeast who can survive on two blades of grass through a seven year winter, so that when the Apocalypse comes, all humans will be eating each other and what will Shetland Ponies be doing? The same thing they always do. Because the Shetland Pony doesn’t give a shit about you.

They will keep us around for the sweaters we make them.

My family’s first pony was a Shetland. I hesitate to say he was MY first pony, because he was an asshole and I don’t think I ever actually rode him without my dad standing at his halter. His name was Jupiter, btw.

However, there is an American Shetland Pony, and it too is a quintessential American creation— a pony removed of all its fluffy grumpy charm so that it is identical to several horse breeds we already have, like the Hackney pony. Who needs character when your pony looks like a fucking supermodel.

However, this isn’t to say I dislike Shetland Ponies. I envy them greatly, and I would like to think that if I myself were a horse, I’d act jut like them. CHILDREN? PFFFT. Fuck children. I may be short, but I am fierce, and I will take all of you motherfuckers down with me.

Anyway, here’s a Shetland steeplechase event, which is hilarious and so wonderful that it makes me glad that Shetland Ponies are a thing, because the world would be a slightly less happy place without them.
