Hey beautiful Sam, can I ask you something, will the Brunette Twin (I don't know their names) be the Black Swan in your story?
A beautiful song, amirite?
And yes! Briar is the brunette. Aurora is the blonde. It was already hinted at in THIS post which takes place in the ~dream world~. The actual real life deception we will see this weekend on this blog 🤭

Yuletide letter 2024
Dear Yuletide Writer!
Thanks so much for checking my letter! Most of what's here is also in my sign-up, but I've added some extra bits, including my preferences for stories in general. Have a very happy Yuletide - it's my favorite time of year!
First things first: With absolute honesty, I would much rather you write something you are comfortable with and that interests and inspires you, rather than struggle to make your fic conform to prompts and suggestions you’re not feeling. I’m assuming you signed up to write my fandoms and characters because you have a genuine love for and interest in them, and that’s what makes for good stories. So let the optional details be optional, and take the below as a guideline for those who prefer it.
I would be delighted if you would consider the below:
Things I really enjoy:
Humor! The perfect story, to me, has a curated balance of comedy and drama. I am not, of course, suggesting that everything should be comedic, but I do feel that humor complements tragedy and vice versa. Make me laugh at some point in your story, and I will be very happy indeed.
First time stories! I absolutely prefer this to anything else, in relationship-focused stories. (I’m secretly an 19th century romantic poet.) Slow burn, UST, all that good stuff. I am not suggesting you have to write a longer story; this is more about vibes.
Casefic! I love detective stories, especially the classics, so anything in that vein will make me very happy indeed.
Plot is delicious. I don’t mind character studies, but a good plot will make me happier than anything.
Explicit sex. If you enjoy writing that sort of thing, I am a sucker for a well-written explicit sex scene. I'm pretty vanilla, but I don't mind reading kink. (See Do Not Wants for exceptions.)
World-building. In science fiction or fantasy canons in particular, I can never get enough of this. Let me know what people have for breakfast, how their clothes are made, where they shop, where they go on vacation. In short, tell me about the three seashells! (#ObscureDemolitionManReference) In short: Details!
A note on shipping/ship focused stories: If I’ve specified a ship and you don’t like it, please don’t feel obligated to write it. However, I would really rather you did not write those characters into other ships in the story (unless it’s canonical, or mentions of past relationships). Likewise, please don’t erase canonical love interests. AUs are OK, but I would really rather read about the canon universe.
Now, author, if you’ve read the above and think “but I only write gen” or “but I hate plotty stories” or “I couldn’t write casefic to save my life” - don’t worry. You matched with me because you like one or more of the same fandoms and characters as me, and that’s more than enough. I trust you to write the best story you can, and that means writing it the way YOU want to. I’m obviously very happy if you chose to include some of my likes, but don’t feel forced to do so.
If you’ve read all the above, and you’re still not sure about something, maybe my fics on AO3 might be helpful? I generally like to read the same type of stuff I write.
Lucky Starr - Isaac Asimov
David (Lucky) Starr
John "Bigman" Jones.
I'm not quite sure what it is about this series that appeals to me so much; on the surface, they are simplistic adventure stories, albeit competently written, set in a universe of naive scientific optimism and (heavily) implied misogyny. But my goodness, how much heart and charm they have! I adore both Lucky and Bigman, their relationship, and the fascinating world in which they live. There is, perhaps, something soothing and satisfying in imagining a word in which science and rationality triumphs, and our lives are made better by technology, never worse.
Wants: As with Daneel and Elijah, above, casefic with angsty romance, please! For this fandom, I would very much appreciate some worldbuilding and expansion on the ideas presented in the novels - why are there so few women? How does society work? All that jazz. And again, if you're not comfortable writing slash, I would love an exploration of Lucky and Bigman's relationship, no matter what you consider the nature of that relationship to be. My dream response to this request would be something in the style of Asimov, but updated with modern sensibilities.
Do Not Wants: I'd prefer that you don't pair either of them with other people, though past relationships are okay to mention. Lucky or Bigman explicitly written to be straight. No PWP, please, I prefer my porn with added plot. No hurt without comfort. No mention of bodily fluids other than blood, semen or saliva in a sexual context. No body horror/permanent disfigurment.
Oxventure: Blades in the Dark
Barnaby Fortescue III
Edvard Lumière
While I love the ending, I am dying to know what happens next! I adore both the setting and the characters, and particularly how the tone walks such a perfect line between horror, humor and realism. Can there be three sides to a line? There can now; Edvard will make it work, somehow. I've picked my two favorite characters - I enjoy Edvard for his delightful and wild innoventions, and his eclectic personality. He's an interesting mix of cynical and blindly optimistic, with just a hint of madness. That being said, Barnaby is my absolute favorite. The idea of a man who takes to a life of crime because he thinks it might be "a bit of fun", and then ends up being accidentally really good at it is absolutely brilliant. He also seems to have some unexpected character growth, particularly toward the end. Last year I said that I do not ship these two, but the idea has since grown on me. So feel free to write gen or slash, as you prefer! It is also more than fine to pair either or both of them with other characters.
Exception to both characters being featured: As I mentioned, Barnaby is my absolute favorite. So long as he is featured, it's okay to not feature Edvard. That doesn't mean I don't want to see Edvard, just that it's okay if you'd prefer not to write about him.
Wants: I really just want to see what happens next. That said, if you haven't finished the series yet - don't worry! I'm more than happy to read a story from earlier in the series. I'm a sucker for casefic, particularly detective fiction, so if you'd like to try your hand at that, I'd be a very happy recipient! I'd also love to read more about Barnaby in general, and perhaps something more about Edvard's past? And of course, there's worldbuilding - what is the world like, now? (Or what was it like, if you're writing from before the ending.) Oh, and references to other Oxventure stuff would be wonderful; I would love to see more than the few glimpses we got in canon.
Do Not Wants: Alternate Universes. So much of what I enjoy about this series is the setting. Explicit sex is fine, but no PWP, please, I prefer my porn with added plot. No mention of bodily fluids other than blood, semen or saliva in a sexual context. No body horror/permanent disfigurment. No permanent character deaths.
Robot Series - Isaac Asimov
R. Daneel Olivaw
Elijah Baley
Caves of Steel is probably my favorite novel of all time, but I adore all of these books. I am very fond of Daneel and Elijah. I find the world they inhabit fascinating, both the future society of Earth, and that of the Outer Worlds. As I love detective fiction, science fiction and especially robots, these stories may as well have been written specifically for me. Part of the appeal, for me, is how they manage to deliver both an entertaining mystery and heart-felt interpersonal drama in a world that feels real. Daneel is one of my favorite fictional characters; the way his empathy and personality shines through his programming and limitations. And Lije is the ultimate cynical, world-weary everyman - together, they are a pair of detectives that deserve to be up there with Holmes and Poirot.
Wants: Casefic. Seriously, if you can write me casefic for this fandom, I will be delighted. A murder mystery would be fantastic. I do ship Daneel and Elijah, and I would love to read about the unresolved tension between them. Explicit sex would be great! World-building and exploring whichever location they are at, be itsomewhere on Earth or one of the Outer Worlds, or on a space ship or station, etc. Exploration of Daneel's character; Lije stuggling to come to terms with his feelings for him - preferably romantic feelings, but if you don't want to write that, feelings of deep friendship. Bickering and banter and held-back affection!
Do Not Wants: Daneel or Elijah paired with other characters. Canonical relationships are okay to mention or feature, so long as they are not the main focus of the story. Daneel or Elijah explicitly written to be straight. No mention of Elijah's death, please, and no mention of Daneel's ultimate fate - though a story reuniting them after Elijah's death would be more than welcome. No PWP, please, I prefer my porn with added plot. No hurt without comfort. No mention of bodily fluids other than blood, semen or saliva in a sexual context. No body horror/permanent disfigurment.
The Twilight Zone
Worldbuilding
My favorite kind of story is one with an unexpected and clever twist, so it's no wonder that I adore The Twilight Zone. It's not just the twists, of course. I love well-written mysteries and "what-if" stories; science fiction and horror (and to a lesser extent fantasy) which is speculative in the utmost sense of the word. Stories that explore the unusual, the unknown, the delightfully unfamiliar. So essentially: More, plz!
Wants: Above all I would love an original story in the Twilight Zone mold, though I understand that not everyone will have signed up with that in mind. If you have offered this fandom with a specific episode or character in mind, I am fully okay with a story featuring worldbuilding around that. Though an episode-like story would be my preference, I am genuinely easy when it comes to this request. If you are looking for inspiration, here is a list of (some of) my favorite TZ episodes:
Mirror Image (my absolute favorite)
Number 12 Looks Just Like You (probably my second favorite)
Nick of Time
It's a Good Life
The Lonely
The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street
The Lateness of the Hour
I Sing the Body Electric
Do Not Wants: No PWP, please, I prefer my porn with added plot. No mention of bodily fluids other than blood, semen or saliva in a sexual context. No body horror/permanent disfigurement.

Victorian Era Fanged Four Fic Recs
So, like, my absolute comfort fic genre is that old staple that used to be such a standard, though you pretty much never see it anymore, and that makes me very sad. It's works set in the Victorian era, when the gang were all together and happily evil, William's a bebe fledgling learning the ropes, and you got this family unit/polycule that's simultaneously brutal as hell but kinda sweet and domestic. I will devour this fic, especially if the historical detailing is on point, and apparently some others wanna see this trope too so lemme spread the love and massacres.
Warning: A LOT of this fic contains noncon and torture and oodles of murders. If you want to know detailed warnings for a given piece, DM me. I'm also including some fics that are pre-Will's embrace but still Victorian and honourable mentions to a couple of Georgian era Darla/Angelus ones.
Ensemble Works
Peasantverse by Peasant - A goddamn masterpiece. The absolute foundational example of this genre. A series of works starting with William's siring (deliberately vague who did the deed itself) and going through the following years. Lots of intriguingly plotty stories, just so many, and everyone in the family gets some love. The historical detailing is absolutely wonderful, the dynamics are wonderful, worldbuilding is fantastic, with some delightful lil footnotes to give extra context to some of the historical points.
Rating: NC17 Length: 14 works, total 232,438 words
A Winter's Tale by Coquette - A road trip of sorts. I love it so. The fanged four on a journey Oop North. Truly engrossing, viscerally descriptive. Followed by Temper which is, sadly, a long abandoned WiP but still worth a read.
Rating: NC17 Length: 74926 words
Queen's Gambit by Josey - Lots of plotty intrigue and politics and gorgeous detail. 'The year is 1880 and the family is sorting things out amongst themselves. Plus politics – and that’s never pretty.'
Rating: NC17 Length: Long
Followed by:
Demon's Aria Oh my gosh you have to read this one. 1881. And more plotty intrigue and politics and a surprise encounter or two that you just truly have to see.
Rating: NC17 Length: Long
Followed by:
Master's Voice - It all comes to a head in 1882. Oh hey could that be the consequences of their actions arrivin? It just might be. Sadly this is another long-abandoned WiP but again it's well worth a read
House-Guests From Hell And How To Send Them Back There by Glassdarkly - Oh hey it's seasonal. The fanged four dealing with unwanted Christmas guests, and they're at their dysfunctional best. Delightfully funny.
Rating: Teen+ Length: 12353 words
The Perfect Present by Glassdarkly - And another seasonal one to go with it. A lil Christmas shopping.
Rating: Teen+ Length: 1998 words
Charity Begins at Home by Glassdarkly - And one more seasonal one for the road. Well, things do come in threes. In a very grand house on the fringes of Victorian London heartwarming deeds of bloodthirstiness are afoot - or should that be bloodthirsty deeds of heartwarmingness
Rating: Teen+ Length: 6713 words
Ennui by Glassdarkly - Darla decides to shake things up a bit to reignite the waning passion in her relationship with Angelus. Things get in the way.
Rating: NC17 Length: 2240 words
Alone at Last by Glassdarkly - Darla and Angelus conspire to send the children away for a while.
Rating: Mature Length: 997 words
She's So Cold by Rebcake - Spike and Dru conduct a harmless experiment. Darla is not amused. Part of the Travels With Spike and Dru series (which has lots of good stuff go read the rest too!)
Rating: Gen Length: 100 words
Fanged Four Fairytales by Kita - Some lovely but brutal little smutty vignettes with delightful imagery
Rating: NC17 Length: 2210 words
The Web by kidcyclone - William contemplates, just a little snapshot, short and lyrical and gorgeous.
Rating: Gen Length: 573 words
FFWTF by soulless lover - What happens when you try to cram every Fanged Four badfic cliche ever into one fic?
Rating: Teen+ Length: 502 words
Darla/Angelus
A Lost Letter of Jane Austen by Hello Spikey - A clergyman's daughter writes her sister about two new acquaintances, a Mr. and Mrs. Angelus.
Rating: Teen+ Length: 2462 words
Followed by:
Darla's Letter by Hello Spikey - Darla reports to the Master on recent events regarding an authoress
Haunted Summer by Gill0 - In 1844 Mary Shelly recounts to a friend her time with our couple in the Year Without a Summer. Absolutely wonderfully captures Mary Shelley's voice and the writing style of the period.
Rating: Gen Length: 1443 words
Angelus/Will
Incandescence by wiseacress - A night at the theatre. Run and catch.
Rating: NC17 Length: 2568 words
Breathing Lessons by Hello Spikey - When Spike's coughing during a fire nearly gets them caught by Holtz' men, Angelus decides he needs to learn to stop breathing.
Rating: NC17 Length: 2499 words
The Adventures of the Concealed Closet by brutti ma buoni - Angel and Spike encounter Sherlock and Watson. Yes, really.
Rating: Teen+ Length: 1399 words
Darla/Drusilla
Venus and Mars by Glassdarkly - A young gentleman encounters two mysterious ladies in the National Gallery, London, in 1874. An absolute classic.
Rating: Teen+ Length: 7972 words
In Pursuit of the Appropriate Man by lillianmorgan - Darla and Dru in 1860s Rome. Contains a delicious abundance of politely cutting Victorian speech
Rating: Teen+ Length: 1691 words
Ye Gods And Little Fishes by Beer Good - The first, aborted, trip to China, and why they never got there.
Rating: Mature Length: 868 words
Darla/Will
Lessons from the Lady of the House by joycometh - Darla discovers William's education is lacking. She sets things to rights.
Rating: NC17 Length 1317 words
Drusilla/Will
Tea For Two by Glassdarkly - Spike will go to any length to please Drusilla. All the way to Wonderland.
Rating: Teen+ Length: 1347 words

have you got any Star Trek fic recommendations? I love what you’ve written and I’m super into the fandom atm
Oh, boy, do I. I’ll try to keep this reasonably compact, but there’s a ton of excellent fic. My to-read folder for this fandom currently has 262 items, and I’m also way behind on leaving comments on the stories I’ve loved because I’ve been glomming them so enthusiastically. Hopefully this will shame me into appreciating the authors as they deserve.
My definition of “reasonably compact” apparently means “twenty-two separate recs,” so have a cut, everyone.
Kirk/Spock
Communication: One of my all-time favorites. It’s a beautiful, incredibly romantic epistolary romance where Kirk and Spock wind up captaining separate ships during a war with the Tholians. They write each other letters where they slowly feel out a resolution to their mutual pining, and the characterization is exquisite.
To Sing the Sun in Flight: I will happily read a million “Amok Time” AUs, but this might be my favorite. It’s simple, hot, beautifully written, and perfectly characterized.
Our Bodies Safe to Shore: Excellent, plotty, and emotionally complex fic where Spock’s body is taken over by a hostile alien intelligence, one that can read his thoughts and imitate him, and he’s locked helplessly inside. And the alien has noticed his feelings for Jim.
Joyboy: Post-Tarsus IV story where Kirk and Spock meet as teenagers, when Spock is with his father on a diplomatic mission where the Tarsus survivors are brought for temporary shelter. Great characterization, maybe especially of Kirk, who gets to be both the woobie (he’s being shunned by a lot of people for doing sex work on Tarsus to stay alive) and the controlled, honorable budding leader. Little bit of underage, but not particularly explicit.
Fulfilling the Needs of the One (Or the Both): Sweet Old Married Spirk story that blends slice-of-life with a nuanced emotional plot where Spock suddenly fears that he hasn’t been giving Jim the emotional support and romance Jim needs. (Jim begs to differ.)
Sunlight: Kirk, Spock, and McCoy start filling out one of those “getting to know you” questionnaires together for a crew newsletter, and of course Spock and Kirk have ridiculously detailed opinions about things as simple as the other one’s hair color and eye color and what kind of animal they would be. Also some cute McCoy characterization and appreciation for shortish Jim, which I always appreciate.
Freely Given: The last by this author, I promise! This is the best “McCoy subtly plays matchmaker” fic I’ve read, where his prods and a trip to a planet where on-the-mouth kisses are a common form of greeting make Spock start thinking about what he wants from his relationship with Kirk. Delightful, sharp Bones, a Kirk who wants to make sure his authority as captain isn’t coming into play here, and a beautifully analytical Spock who is slowly realizing the depths of his pining.
Great Expectations: My favorite bit of xeno! Kirk and Spock are about to have their first time together, but Spock shies away from getting completely naked, and when he finally does, Kirk has an unfortunate reflexive reaction to his unfamiliar genitals. Before sweetly and humorously consoling Spock about it and boldly and sexily going where no man has gone before. This is hot and romantic and perfectly characterized, and I just want to give Spock a hug.
Centennial: More Old Married Spirk! Kirk is turning one hundred, and he’s feeling his age a little. But Spock has the perfect gift for him. Absolutely heartwarming, and written with grace and restraint.
A Private Obsession: Outsider-POV narrated by a man from a rigid, sexually conservative planet. He owns a factory where Kirk and Spock (clearly stranded and/or forced undercover for purposes the narrator doesn’t know) wind up working. He becomes sexually and romantically obsessed with Kirk and painfully jealous of Spock–and the ease with which the two men love each other–and, of course, leveraging Spock’s failing health to get Kirk into his bed doesn’t, and can’t, solve his problems.
Famous Last Words: Super adorable fic where there’s a shipboard poll of everyone’s favorite quotes of famous people’s last words, and all of Kirk’s have, um, a certain subtext about seconds-in-command, love, and sex. Contains flirting and foreplay and love confessions via quotes. Which is fitting, because Kirk and Spock are enormous nerds.
The Game: Funny, insightful story with Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Scotty playing a game–come up with something another person at the table would never, ever say–that then takes a sharp turn into devastating pining. This ends as UST, but I can’t believe they don’t get together. I mean, come on.
Warm Thoughts: Lovely, aching post-”Amok Time” story where Kirk wants to talk about what happened on Vulcan, Spock really doesn’t, and everything is brought to a head by an absolute hurt/comfort gift of a situation where Kirk comes back from a planet with an inability to get warm. Spock can ostensibly use mind melds to help him a little–but things keep slipping through that he’d rather not deal with. Excellent hurt/comfort and pining.
…And a Bottle of Rum: Adorable, hilarious, sexy established relationship fic where Kirk tries to use the “Shore Leave” planet for a bit of fun pirate role-play and Spock tries to be a good sport about it. Hilarity ensues: “Help, help,” Spock called dutifully, and was set down again with a thump as Jim collapsed in a paroxysm of laughter.
Not So Last Words: Heartbreaking post-Wrath of Khan soulmate AU. Your soulmate’s last words are supposed to be written on your wrist, but Kirk can’t understand how Spock could have died without saying what’s on his. There is beautifully layered tearjerker stuff here.
Round is a Shape: There are a bunch of “older Kirk is self-conscious about his weight, Spock loves him just the way he is,” and I will read them all, because I am a chubby sap. But this is my favorite. Utterly adorable.
And the Truth Shall Set You Free: Smug telepathic aliens force Kirk to publicly declare his feelings to a shocked, unresponsive Spock who has been avoiding him lately. The aliens feel like they could come straight out of an episode–there’s lots of debating about morality! I love debating about morality!–and the romance is lovely and the crew is 1000% in Kirk and Spock’s corner. And it’s delightful.
Cut Point: Spock gets an exceptionally flattering haircut, one that would probably make me moan, “I want to touch his hair,” even more than I already do. Suddenly, everyone on the ship can’t stop talking about how good he looks, while Kirk loses his mind due to what he thinks is unrequited love.
Gen
Way, Hey, An’ Up She Rises: Nuanced and exquisitely written first meeting story about Kirk coming onto the Enterprise and Spock evaluating him. Really well-characterized and great at the tentative feeling of the two of them feeling each other out. And has “pretty shitty but not actually an indiscriminate villain” Gary Mitchell, which is a take I’m especially fond of.
Second Decent Destiny: Very shippy and technically pre-slash, but reads comfortably enough as gen. “Amok Time” AU where T’Pau doesn’t alibi them to Starfleet and Kirk winds up with an honorable discharge for diverting the ship. Spock joins him in extremely early retirement and the two of them try to figure out where they’re going from here. Lovely, and a very good idea for a second-chance life.
Fortune’s Favoured Child: The formatting on this is kind of terrible, but it’s extremely well-worth it if you love Kirk hurt/comfort as much as I do. In the aftermath of the deaths of Edith Keeler and his brother, Kirk is foundering a little, and seems to snap under the impact of yet another crisis–and in the process, reveals layers of suppressed pain that even his friends didn’t know about.
Lost and Found: Again, superb Kirk hurt/comfort–well-plotted, tense, angsty, and perfectly executed. Kirk has been kidnapped and brutally tortured by Romulans, and as the story opens, he’s been brought back to the Federation in disgrace, having made a televised confession to all manner of crimes and (presumably) spilled Federation secrets to stay alive. His crew is supposed to keep him in the brig and bring him to justice, but of course their loyalty is such that their immediate response is basically, “Fuck no.” (I am bowled over by the sweetness of a particular gesture here.) And Kirk gets to be both extremely damaged and extremely resourceful and inventive.
Other Ships
Matchmaker of Mars: I initially left this off by mistake because I was going through my bookmarks, and I always just get to this one through my gift page! It’s Uhura/T’Pring 1930s Science Fiction Writer AU, which should be enough to make you want to read it--it has lovely characterization, note-perfect pastiche, and the two of them struggling to deal with John W. Campbell.
Oh, okay, so this was the short version. It could have been longer, I promise. This was relative restraint!

Tagged: All about me and fanfic
Thank you for tagging me @dragonnan! My fan fic history is a long one... and in three fandoms. Which is why most of this will be under a cut for anyone who has a lot of time to waste. And is morbidly curious. But there’s some (okay, dozens) of fanfic recs for three fandoms under there too, sooooo.
Tagging at the top so you don’t have to read my verbose-ness if you don’t want to: @amethyst-noir @cairistiona7 @mdcbd @phierie if you’re interested in giving it a shot :)
1. At what age did you start writing fanfiction?
13. You can still find my earliest works online, too; I kept up anything that wasn't completely deplorable (though fanfiction.net deleted my stupidly popular, several hundred reviews of a story I did in 2004 because it was script format. The bastards xD Popular with all the little kids).
2. Who is your favorite author?
Lmaooooo what a question. Okay so for three fandoms. The big thing that’s common between all my favorite authors is that romance is not a primary genre with any of these writers. So if you like gen (of all genres) you’ve come to the right post.
If anyone here is a LOTR book fan (especially Aragorn), let me direct you to storiesofarda.com. It’s an old site, not even mobile friendly. Anyway, go read the works of Cairistiona and Meckinock. If you're more into hobbits and anything fluffy, go read Shirebound. That I remember their names since I was last active in fanfic in LOTR in 2011 speaks to their quality. I've had the honor of meeting Shirebound several times in real life as well, this last time in New York back in April after several years apart (though I'd like to meet Cair one day for sure, as well). I had a lot of favorites years ago but I’d need to reread the old stuff to see what still lives up to my expectations.
Scanning my favorites in Sherlock, Jolie Black , CaffeineKitty, and hollyesque on AO3. Stillwaters1, chappysmom, Radon65, and Morgan Stuart from fanfiction.net. But I have a couple favorite stories from authors who only wrote a couple fics (below).
Now the MCU (okay basically Doctor Strange, let’s be honest), on AO3: Grim Revolution and merrywil (the latter is pretty new and needs a hell lot more attention, she is a great writer). I love those long, introspective character one shots. There's not a lot of authors who don't focus on romance in the MCU with Stephen as a main character -- indeed, it’s partially nonexistent -- so shorter list. ElenaCee wrote some great stories just after the first film but has sadly moved onto other fandoms.
Dragonnan on AO3 is currently my favourite whump writer. Two of my fandoms and lots of my favorite tropes. I feel spoiled. My favorite romance-is-their-primary-genre writer is amethyst-noir for her characterization of Stephen combined with the oh-so-fun (for us) scenarios.
3. Favorite type of scene to write?
I can usually tickle myself quite a bit when I get some really great situational comedy into a story. I can never be fully an angst/whump writer because I adore comedy. So yeah, situational comedy for sure.
4. What is your favorite fanfic?
Stop asking me these questions ahhh. Okay so I'll be mentioning fanfics not by any of the authors listed above (which are in my most favorite stories too but, well, their works are all favorites anyway. Just look at all their works in said fandom for more favorites if you’re lacking reading material and have similar tastes. And once you’re done reading all the works by those authors, come back here for more. Seriously, read the authors above).
I listed these fics in alphabetical order because that seemed most fair.
LOTR (Most are book-verse. I need to reread a lot of these. Most of these authors have several works for the fandom, though I think each of these particular stories have Aragorn as a primary character):
A Proper Course of Action by GadFlyGirl (absolutely hilarious one-shot after Helm’s Deep about ‘the Denethor situation’)
Across the Years by MistyC (a very creative and well-written story that spins an old cliche in a much more interesting way)
Butterbur and the King by Eledhwen (fantastic character one-shot from one of my favorite minor characters)
Conversations with the King by athelas63 (great characterizations, good healing scenes)
Conversion by Pentangle-linnon (for everyone who says that first person can’t be done in fanfic - read this one-shot, then tell me what you think now. A work of pure brilliance)
Crossroads of Light and Shadow by Mirach (this one I recommend simply for the creativity alone; the art she was able to execute with the text in flipping fanfiction.net is really mind-boggling. Very creative!)
Doomed to Live by fliewatuet (it was never completed, but it’s so freaking good that I am putting it here anyway)
For Every Evil by Mirrordance (fantastic modern incarnation AU that spun out into a series)
Greet the Dawn by Neoinean (a great, very long long-shot with two characters meeting and it’s just a great combination of humor and angst. More great characterization)
Helping Strangers by Imaginigma (fantastic one-shot, really interesting OCs, a wonderful scenario)
In Shadow Realm by Legolass Q (original concept, well-developed characters, engaging plot, truly magnificent)
Light Fingers by Aearwen22 (I think this is the only fic here that doesn’t star Aragorn- he’s a pretty minor character. Brilliant brilliant characterizations of the OCs and a look of a part of society often ignored in LOTR fan fic)
Pale-Faced Tark by Carafinwe (everything by this author is brilliant, but the visceral imagery she managed to capture in two short chapters here still blows my mind)
The Patient by Scribe (another fantastic modern incarnation AU that spun out into a series)
Ransom by MP brennan (man I just continue to see how much the LOTR fandom completely spoiled me with all of these brilliant, plotty fics. Another original concept with brilliant OCs and fantastic execution)
Shattered Stones by MCat711 (a very creepy, original, well-executed one shot that keeps you guessing the whole way through)
The Weight of Power by Nefhiriel (does it follow canon as established by the Appendices? No. Do I care? No. The story’s absolutely fantastic and makes those small discrepancies mean nothing. This was also the first story I ever drew fan art for. I then made something for Shirebound a year later, then didn’t make anything again until that Ebony Maw piece I posted a bit back)
With Hope and Without Hope by docmon (AU scenario in that the Three Hunters are captured while trying to rescue the Hobbits. Very well-thought out and compelling plot, fantastic characterizations all around)
Sherlock:
Annie’s Song by Berouge (One of the only romantic-leaning fics listed here [Sherlolly], but that is due to its excellent characterization and execution. Creative one-shot.)
The Case of the Missing Bus Ticket by Unsentimentalf (I think I burst a rib laughing to this story. Long one-shot. Situational humor at its finest)
Constantly by thesignofserbia (great one shot concerning Serbia)
Drowning by Dayja (I like a lot of her stuff. Angsty.)
Firestorm by Dustbunny13 (This is... beyond words. So gorgeous. I adored it from beginning to end. Have read a few times. Sometimes accept it as season 3 alternate canon, it’s just fantastic)
Fortune and Bust by ThessalyMc (a wonderful gap-filler fic, very similar to a lot of my favorite authors listed above in quality and type of content)
The Green Blade by verityburns (excellent case fic)
The Holiday by Scriblit (both whumpy angst and humor and case fic? Yeeeessss. Another I’ve read several times.)
Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus by Caitlin Fairchild (another Serbia fic? Yes predictable of me)
London Orbital (another story, very long one-shot, where I burst a rib laughing)
Rigging screws, size 1 3/8 inch, galvanised by AJHall (another excellent case fic)
World Enough, and Time by StoneWingedAngel (an excellent and creative execution of a trope that you'll realize by the time you get to day three)
Doctor Strange (unless stated otherwise, they’re all one-shots. Need more multi-chapter fics... or just gen Stephen content in general):
The Architect by mudgems (a great what-if with Stephen, Loki, and the Time Stone)
Born of the Same Impulse by GwendolynStacy (WIP multi-chapter. Time stone shenanigans send Stephen and Tony back to just before Ultron and a few months after the car accident, but before Kamar-Taj [the accident happens in 2015 rather than 2016 for this to work. It’s brilliant])
Citizen Erased by Imagined (WIP multi-chapter. One of the only romance-is-a-major-genre story [ironstrange] on the list, but the plot concept is incredibly unique, the mystery is being unraveled so wonderfully well, and the collection of characters is really fantastic and in-character.)
The End of Infinity by FriendlyNeighborhoodFangirls (WIP multi-chapter. It’s canon compliant, only Stephen does a fantastic trick after canon and snatches Loki from the claws of death to go back to 2016 and fix everything. Peter, Tony also co-star. I am very much looking forward to where this goes)
Extracurricular Activities by EmptyHead (I am cheating here and linking a series. But it’s so damn creative, and while Stephen plays a big role, he’s definitely not the starring character. Synopsis is that MJ learns the mystic arts. It’s really brilliant!)
Geniuses by decotex (Stephen Strange's and Tony Stark's backstories, published before IW came out)
Hearth Sorcery by keshwyn (Another cheat here with a series of 5 one-shots, but this is too excellent and undervalued not to link. Excellent OC and world-building, highly recommend)
Holiday Magic by KarToon12 (Stephen plays Santa Claus for sick kids. It's adorable)
i hope you hold the mirror up (to show me what i chose) by CallicoKitten (Stephen and Tony being assholes to one another, published way before IW. I love it)
Like an Old Coat by ValmureEld (Could definitely see this as a follow up scene to the events in the Doctor Strange film. Great character interaction sequence)
Magic In Our Veins by Luna_Heart (the lack of Loki and Stephen interaction stories is criminal. Absolutely criminal. I want more!)
The Night’s First Watch by fathomfive (omg this is so good. So so so good. Excellent character study, I can’t recommend it enough)
of coffee and (questionable) first impressions by Phierie (Ooohh I love this alternate first meeting lots. Beat up on monsters and a coffee break after the work. Great stuff)
Project Code 131793 by StrangeMischief (Absolutely haunting and incredibly well-executed AU. I would adore to see more in this universe, it is so interesting)
Replay by INMH (the horror of Dormammu and coping with it)
You’ve Got Mail by Jadesfire (it’s about the mail situation with the Sanctum. What is not to love about that concept)
5. What tags do you avoid like the plague?
A/B/O, mpreg, not Mary friendly (for Sherlock), not Team Cap friendly, anti-Steve, anti-Wanda (or similar). Any of that anti-character bullshit, but in the MCU those are the two I see the most (and so probably make me rage the most. I once saw anti-T’Challa for instance and that just confused me more than anything). A bit of a rant in the next two paragraphs (I have Strong Feelings on this topic).
I don't tolerate the anti-character crowd. I really don't. Disliking a character is one thing and completely normal (I have my own list), but expanding time and energy to write just how much this character sucks is mind-boggling (and tends to make for really shitty fanfic. So you create a strawman villain of the character you hate for your favorite character to go against? Good job, you’ve made your favorite character appear entirely too stupid to deal with a well-developed character in conflict, and have made your favorite character 2D. Have a gold star). Your energy can be used elsewhere that isn't focused on hate. If you hate the character but aren’t creative enough to present them as anything but a strawman in your writing, don’t bother. Create an OC for your antagonist instead. Stop making canon characters so ridiculously OOC.
The real world is too filled with negativity to have it as part of a major focus in my fandom experience. It actually really, really bothers me that I cannot save a filter that automatically excludes all those anti tags as they haven’t been canonicalized on AO3. What perhaps bothers me even more is the number of kudos those hate-filled fics with incredibly OOC characters receive. The hypocrisy in this crowd is just astounding when you start pointing out the flaws in their favorite characters, too (FYI: All well-developed characters have flaws. I love Stephen Strange for his flaws. Before Stephen made his debut, Tony Stark was my favorite for similar reasons. It makes them INTERESTING).
Anyway, rant over.
6. What AU do you wish to write but feel like you won’t manage?
If I really really really want to write something, I'll write it. That said, there are things that I don't plan to write that I would adore reading (like that unfinished Stephen travels to the HP universe in Harry's fifth year fic ahhhhh I want that it would have made the 5th year so much better. Maybe if I bribe the original writer with fan art... wardmason you’re killing me).
7. Do you outline, or write as you go?
Depends. The outlines only tend to come into play for long stories with several scenes, and writing tends to happen first before outlining.
8. What has been your favorite story to write so far? Why?
Such hard questions! Uhhh I had great fun writing in my youth but I can barely remember it. Within this last year, uh... can I just say all of them? I've written about 100k in 6 months, I'm clearly enjoying myself here. I’ve had vibrant moments of delight in writing or planning several of them.
9. Do you prefer to write one-shots or multi-chapters? Why?
Both. Just depends on the story I want to tell and how long that story is saying it should be. I like posting a variety too; have one-shots coming out while I am working on the longer stories in the background.
10. What is your favorite kind of comment?
Oh those deep analytical ones that clearly took time to write. They're so lovely and really make my day. Every fanfic writer knows exactly what type of comment I am talking about.
11. Why did you start writing fanfiction? Why are you still writing?
I started because I had just seen the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie and I really liked the characters (before the sequels ruined them in various capacities) and I thought, "I should put them in Middle-earth!" 45 chapters and 7 years later that damn fic got completed (after dozens and dozens of rewrites as my writing abilities improved over the years).
Now, it's because I really enjoy writing and I like playing in copyrighted playgrounds with characters and worlds I love. Yeah, I could write an original novel, but it wouldn't be nearly as much fun.

WIP Update - 26 Sep 2017
So I did a half-assed one of these last week, here's a more complete list:
Longer Works
To Shield from the Storm - the first draft of the last chapter (17 for those of you playing along) is complete (huzzah!) awaiting revision & beta reading. This is the Tony POV Stony a/b/o 'verse set just after the events of the first Avenger film and is relatively canon compliant (except for the obvious!) I'll be posting lucky Chapter 13 tomorrow. FYI, Ch 13 rides the tipping point between Mature & Explicit, and Chapter 14 definitely goes Explicit, so be aware if that's not your cup of tea. It worked out wonderfully well in that the last chapter will post two days before I go on a two and a half week vacation with very little internet access.
And while I've set things up for a sequel in the last couple chapters of this fic, the Muse is actually pushing me towards a prequel which looks back at Steve and Bucky getting together. This would also be an a/b/o fic and therefore at least a Mature rating. Probably a lengthy one-shot, but has the potential to become multi-chapter, if I decide to move forward thru the canonical timeline. Started a Google doc this morning to start jotting down the plotty bits that have been rolling around my head, but I really don't have any words down on paper for this as of yet.
The Subtle Briar (Unpublished)- I started this fic last Nov and Poor Peggy is getting pushed to the side once again. However, I am actively tinkering with this alternate origin story for our favorite SSR agent. Peggy POV (natch) it will be Gen/Teen at the most, with canon-level Steggy as the end game. The fic will probably be multi-chapter, as I have about 2k of active story written so far to just cover the first major act. I also have several plotty bits sketched out and further elements still to be jotted down.
Short Stuff
I’ve got two pieces that by all rights should be first chapters of longer fics, but as I have neither the inspiration nor the motivation to continue either of these further at the moment - will probably get posted as stand-alones, as they work fairly well. Here's a quick summary -- let me know if you'd like to see these sooner (before end of Oct) rather than later.
Remember, Then Follow - (Unpublished) Tony POV that picks up right after the CA:CW Siberia missile silo battle. Sitting at almost 2k as is, tho the title doesn't quite fit what's written. It's been hanging around since May 2016 (when it would have been much more relevant) and probably could use a bit more polish before posting, as well as a better wrapup (I can write opening lines like nobody's business - but wrapping up a fic is tough for me)
Time Out of Joint (Unpublished) - This poor baby is even older, dating back to Sep 2015. It's a Bucky POV where he, Steve and a group of strangers wake up in a sealed room. Where (or perhaps more accurately, when) are they and why have they been brought here? This definitely reads like a first chapter of something bigger, but I have no freaking clue what. I had fun with the idea, tho and am hesitant to let the work I've put into it go to waste. Am doing some re-working as I realized upon a re-read that I wasn’t strictly following my own conceit.
The StarkQuill Tony POV bit I wrote back in May might get a bit of a polish for posting to Ao3 as well - tentative title of "Carry On, Wayward Sons" - tho that seems a bit ambitious/pretentious for a mere 1200 words.
The Avengers shapeshifter AU worldbuilding exercise has pretty much faded from memory. :^/ I never had a good plot bunny/hook to work with, but it's still squirreled away for potential use/collaboration.
And apparently I started a semi-sequel to Sometimes a Fantasy (Explicit Non-powered AU with shrimpy!Steve as a phone sex operator & Tony as a client) revisiting key events from Tony’s POV. Gonna have to dig this up and see if it's worth doing anything with.
FYI - I am still looking for guidance on how to set up a masterlist of my Ao3 & FanFiction.net (mostly dups) fics and link to it from my Tumblr home page. If anyone can point me towards instructions/template/etc - that would be much appreciated.

It includes stories that were works in progress/unpublished in 2015 (or earlier) and published in 2016, and doesn’t include any comment fic or other works that were not published as stand-alones on my journal or AO3, or any unpublished works in progress, or any completed but unpublished works. Ruminations 2015 was a low point for word count (my lowest full-year total) and there were a lot of contributing factors. When I did my analysis last year, I attributed much of it to my workload and big writing projects. In retrospect, there was another factor I was not willing to consider. I was, to be honest, burning out on White Collar. Six years, two million words of fan fiction spread over nearly 700 stories - it's not surprising I felt like the story well was running dry. (And yes, I know that 288k is still a very respectable number of words, but it was a low point for me and kind of felt like a failure.) So, what was different for 2016? Well - a bright and shiny new fandom! Last year, during the time I took off for the winter holidays, I discovered The Flash. I'd tried watching The Arrow on Netflix a few times, but couldn't really get into it. The Flash was a completely different kettle of fish and it had something that was like catnip for me: a curious relationship between the young hero and a very shady older mentor. In describing it to my White Collar friends, I said it pulled me in the way the Neal/Alder grabbed me. I got hit by the plot bunnies in early January and started writing. The words poured out of me like water and the faucet still hasn't turned off. Of the eighty-two stories, sixty-five were for The Flash, eleven were for White Collar and five were Flash RPS. And for the first time in three years, I did the full complement of MMOM – 31 stories in 31 days, and unlike prior years, I deliberately didn't try to limit myself to 300-word ficlets. Some of those stories were quite meaty (please pardon the pun!), and my efforts for the Merry Month of Masturbation contributed significantly to my total word-count for the year. Although I only wrote eleven White Collar stories and did not participate in this year's Big Bang, that isn't to say that I'm not writing White Collar anymore - far from it. I'm just a lot more selective about my stories. I'm continuing established 'verses like Wonder(ful) Years and Dragon'verse, and I hope to get bunnied for Gloriana, too. It's a heady thing - having a new fandom. If there's one regret - it's that there's no real presence for The Flash on LJ - it's pretty much all on that shiny shithole known as Tumblr. I don't think I'll ever quite get used to that. The Year End Meme Questions… And now to answer the questions that everyone asks themselves… 1. Favorite. Oh, that's really kind of hard. I recently did an Ask the Author meme, and I'd picked The Slow Dance of Madness as the favorite, but in retrospect, I have to reconsider. I think I'm going to have to say A transparent house that you and I built, which I wrote for the poetry_fiction challenge. But that's not quite right either. I really do want to tout the massive story I wrote and published (in sorta-secret) and I discuss more in a bit, but that's not fair. Maybe the whole Dominance Hierarchy series, which started out as a bit of tumblr prompt fun and became something far too lyrical? 2. Best. Since I can't really keep signal boosting a story that no one can yet read, I'm going to have to say that As Brothers We Will Stand is my best story of the year. It was a long and plotty epic that started out from a simple premise – what if Barry hadn't been able to rescue Harry from Zoom at the end of S2.14 – Escape From Earth-2. It was supposed to be short and smutty but got legs and lots and lots of moving pieces. I'm proud of how everything tied together and nothing was left hanging to explain in a sequel or timestamp. I'm particularly proud of the sex scenes – which is not something I ordinarily tout about my fic. This was (believe it or not), the first time I wrote three men in a bed, and I'm seriously pleased with how it all worked out. 3. Most Fun. Easy to pick - Harrison Wells Eats Snacks. I'd been binge-listening to the M.A.T.E.S. podcast (Mike and Tom Eat Snacks) and that infected my brain. And I should make honorable mention to both The New S.T.A.R. Labs (Harry needs to make some money and decides to invent over-engineered sex toys) and You'll Find Magic Wherever You Look (Cisco invents a new gun, Harry is transfigured, and much angsty cuteness ensues). 4. Most Under-appreciated. One of my early Flash stories got very little love, and I can understand why. A Knotted Cord Untying was a fusion between The Flash and Ed (the light romantic comedy from the late '90s that made Tom Cavanagh a star). I resurrected the original Harrison Wells and his wife, Tess Morgan, and set them in Stuckeyville. I thought I'd done a clever job of integrating the two worlds, but the fandom voted with their silence (and someone I respected made an off-hand comment about not really liking these types of fusions, that they 'never really work anyway' and so my writer's soul kind of died a little at that). 5. Sexiest. Like I said above, I wrote all thirty-one days of MMOM, and that's a lot of smut. And almost all of my Flash fic is shippy and sexy (looking at the list of stories, out of the sixty-two, I think that maybe three are purely gen). So picking the sexiest will be hard. But I think I'm going to have to say that it's a tie between The Slow Dance of Madness, which has the most creative sex scene I've ever written, I Never Dreamed That I'd Love Somebody Like You (the Wicked Game remix), which is a sex pollen story, and the entirety of the Dominance Hierarchy series, which is really all about smut (until you get to the third story, then it's smut and heartbreak). 6. Holy Crap, That’s Wrong Even for You. The past few years, this category has been filled by something in my Transformations genre, something usually unbelievably cracky. But not this year, because this year, I wrote some seriously smutty smut, including a story that involves daddy-kink and fantasy incest. Yeah, VERY VERY wrong. Hour Follows Hour (like water follows water). Read at your own peril. And it's het. 7. Hardest to Write. I don't know if any story was particularly difficult to write this year. Words flowed like water. I was stymied a bit when I was writing my White Collar Pairings story The Best Laid Plans – I couldn't seem to find a focus for it, but when I did – it simply exploded out of me (pun NOT intended). I also had some trouble getting started on one of my Fic-Can-Ukah stories, the long anticipated wedding story for The Wonder(ful) Years - We Followed an Unlikely Star, if just because I'd written the engagement and the honeymoon, as well as so many references to the actual wedding that I struggled to find something fresh to say. 8. Biggest Disappointment. I can't think of a single story I'd want to rewrite. 9. Biggest Surprise. Okay, now I get to talk a little about the epic story that was published in a place that no one will find it. It's called Truth out of a Lie and it wasn't supposed to be 162k words. It wasn't even supposed to be half that length. Or a third. It was, at its inception, supposed to be about 40k and when I started writing it, I wondered if I was overestimating myself. I had one square left on my Gen Bingo card to make a blackout and instead of taking the easy way out, a conversation with my enabler in chief made me flip the script and take an unexpected path. Another surprise was just how easy it was to write – the story simply poured out of me. I started writing on June 22 and finished the story in chief on October 28 – about 154k. There were two scenes I needed to write and in the writing, I realized I wanted to make some significant character changes, which entailed another whole chunk of words. That was also something I've never done – gone back and shifted a major plot point. And so, what's it about? It's the origin story for a series I created during MMOM - EoBarry Revealed - where Eobard and Barry are happily married, immortal speedsters. It's a close canon A/U – which means it tracks with canon events through seasons One and Two, but some important things are different. Basically, Eobard is about eight-five percent less murderous. So, when is this really going to get published in my space (it's already published in a comm not to be named, but is available if you're diligent, but please don't – it's not beta'd and likely full of mistakes and gaping plotholes)? Soon. My beta-reader is faced with a rather Herculean task of editing this monster and that takes time. I'm also very strict about not publishing a story until it's done and if my beta reader has to go back and make recommendations in the early part of the story after reading the end, I'll be screwed if I've already started publishing. When it is ready, it will get two chapters a week and there are 36 or 40 chapters (I really don't remember at this point). But they will come without fail. 10. Riskiest. I am going to have to say my first Flash fanfic, The Slow Hand of Time. It was a big risk because I was writing for a brand new fandom and I hadn't consumed all of the available canon. I just got smacked in the face with EoBarry feels and had to write it. Looking Forward… Any Story You’d Like to Rewrite: Nope. I'm pretty satisfied with my writing in 2016. How Will New Canon Change Your Writing: No more new canon for White Collar, which still makes me very sad. But new canon for The Flash starts arriving at the end of the month. I'm definitely looking forward to it, but I don't know if it will affect my writing. I'm basically EoBarry trash right now, and unless EoWells makes another appearance, I'll be writing A/Us until the end of time. Goals for 2017: None. Just write what I enjoy writing. Avoid challenges that make me anxious. And that’s the 2016 Year in Review. Acknowledgements, most heartfelt As always, I must thank my dearest sinfulslasher, who keeps enabling me in the hopes that someday I'll write that Neal/Satchmo story for her. And also, my bestie, theatregirl7299 who picks me up and dusts me off when I fall down. And I must acknowledge my delightful new friend – @timeforalongstory, who rolls around with me in the EoBarry trashcan like no one else, who enables me to write the wildest headcanon and keeps me going with the most amazing feedback. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! And to everyone who reads my stories, thank you, thank you and thank you again – my appreciation for you is boundless. I haven't been so good at responding to feedback as I want to be, but please know that I cherish every kind thought and word you leave for me.

End-of-Year Writing Meme for 2016.
Stats
Total Word Count: According to AO3, 44k.
Total Completed Fics: 31 on AO3.
Ship/character/fandom breakdown:
30 Dragon Age fics, including 24 fics about Hawke, Anders, or Hawke/Anders, with greater or lesser degrees of Justice; 2-3 fics each involving Carver, Merrill, Mahariel, Morrigan, Solas, or Lavellan; and no one else is tagged more than once.
And one Lost Boys fic for yuletide, David/Michael/Star.
Specifics
Best/worst title?
I really need to stop the one-word-title thing. Looking at my stats page for the year on AO3, I have only the vaguest idea of which one's which, and I wrote them.
Best/worst summary?
Now that I'm looking at it, all my worst summaries are for tumblr prompt ficlets that got added to AO3 later - same goes for titles, actually. Apparently if a story didn’t need a title/summary originally, i'm really bad at tacking one on later.
But I do like the phrasing for Names and Memories: "a spirit that used to call itself Cole and a spirit who used to call himself Justice." ...Although I suppose that could easily make people think of the Justice/Vengeance distinction when what I meant was that he calls himself Anders. Ugh.
Best first line?
...I'm going to cheat and go with first two lines, because the opening of the mermaid au ficlet:
Anders pulls Hawke deeper into the lake, and Hawke can’t swim but that’s fine. He thinks maybe he can figure it out as they go along.
...That's it, that's the ship. That whole leap into the abyss.
Best last line(s)?
The end of War Stories’ most recent chapter: “Still alive, I see,” says Flemeth.
General questions
Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
I would have predicted either 'stop writing entirely' or else 'write at least 20k more words than i actually did.' For years the only fic writing I've done has been for Yuletide, and then suddenly i was consumed by dragons. I don't really know how to extrapolate from that.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?
I would never have thought of Scout Grandin/Finn Caldansen until I saw the prompt for it in the rare pair exchange, but their storylines work together so well. Grief! Transformation! Avvar culture!
What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
War Stories, easily.
In last year's version of this meme I said my fic goals for 2016 were "To write the kind of thing I want to read. Admittedly, what I want to read most are the epic plotty postgame adventures of Hawke and Anders during the war - and epic and plotty are fairly unlikely to happen from me." That's War Stories. Writing the fic I want to see in the world.
Okay, NOW your most popular story.
On AO3, it's Shimmy, the one about Hawke's inauguration as Champion how I can't stand spicy shimmy jokes, that's what that one's really about, my complete lack of a sense of humor.
And on tumblr, it's the one about Anders' scars.
Story most underappreciated by the universe?
I'm going to say Alive and Well, which is a tiny post-Kirkwall ficlet about Anders and Justice. But by 'underappreciated' I mean it literally had not occurred to me to post fic on tumblr and not just AO3, and posting a gen ficlet only on AO3 is a great way to make sure no one ever sees it.
Story that could have been better?
War Stories is completely out of my skillset in the sense that it’s long and has something of a plot, which, ???, but hey, I'm learning things.
Sexiest story?
Hopefully it's the mage sex/possessed sex headcanons PWP.
Saddest story?
All this year's fics are a lot more upbeat compared to last year's! The Names and Memories ficlet about Justice and Cole in the distant future got the most replies about how sad it is, but it's kind of a happy story to me, so I'm going to go with the Solas/Wisdom one. ...They're kind of similar stories, actually, but where Anders!Justice is sort of celebrating the past, Solas is mourning it.
Most fun?
...There's a ficlet where Merrill and Mahariel meet up in Kirkwall and drink cocoa? Fluff is kind of like fun?
Story with single sweetest moment?
I've written a lot of tooth-rottingly sweet Hawke/Anders fluff this year, but I think my favorite's the part where Hawke helps out with the manifesto. Supporting each other by pitching in, helping in practical ways.
Hardest story to write?
The Finn/Grandin one, just because I was sort of trying to do a lot of things all at once, trying to sort out a lot of different short scenes in my head at the same time, but I'm pretty happy with the results.
Easiest/most fun story to write?
Easiest - the ficlet about Iron Bull and Vivienne is literally just a dream journal entry with a bit of game dialogue added in.
Most fun - Calenhad and Aldenon, getting to tell a story about Hawke/Anders by rambling about theater and storytelling and obscure codex entries.
Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters?
Fleshed out, certainly, but no drastic shifts in how I see their characterization, I don't think, not from writing at least. (But from replaying the game, yes, constantly.)
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
So much learning! Finally branching out from stories revolving entirely around canon events, trying to add a little more plot once in a while! And I've been trying to rely less on introspection to tell the story, pay more attention to what the characters are physically doing - and then for this year's yuletide story my recip called the fic 'poignant and tactile,' so apparently that showed! So I was happy about that.
What are your fic writing goals for next year?
Right now I just want to work on War Stories, so I'll make that my goal. I should be able to finish it in 2017, I think; it’s long by my standards but not that long.

Dear Yuletide Writer Letter - 2023
Dear Yuletide Writer
Thanks so much for checking my letter! Most of what's here is also in my sign-up, but I've added some extra bits, including my preferences for stories in general. Have a very happy Yuletide - it's my favorite time of year!
First things first: With absolute honesty, I would much rather you write something you are comfortable with and that interests and inspires you, rather than trying to bed over backwards and struggle to make your fic conform to prompts and suggestions you’re not feeling. I’m assuming you signed up to write my fandoms and characters because you have a genuine love for and interest in them, and that’s what makes for the best stories. So let the optional details be optional, and take the below as a guideline for those who prefer it.
However, if you WOULD like more details, I would be delighted if you would consider the below:
Things I really enjoy:
Humor! The perfect story, to me, has a curated balance of comedy and drama. Humor is life, and stories that are entirely without it often seem lifeless, to me. I am not, of course, suggesting that everything should be a comedy, but that humor complements tragedy and vice versa. Make me laugh at some point in your story, and I will be very happy indeed.
First time stories! I absolutely prefer this to anything else, in relationship-focused stories. As I tend to say, I’m secretly an 18th century romantic poet. Slow burn, UST, all that good stuff. I realize you’ve got limited time and limited words here, but whatever you can give, I will happily accept.
Casefic! I love detective stories, especially the classics, so anything in that vein will make me very happy indeed.
Plot. Plooooot! Plot is delicious. I don’t mind character studies, but a good plot will make me happier than anything.
Explicit sex. I’m pretty vanilla, but I don’t mind reading kink. If you enjoy writing that sort of thing, I am a sucker for a well-written explicit sex scene, no matter the flavor!
World-building. In science fiction or fantasy canons in particular, I can never get enough of this. Let me know what people have for breakfast, how their clothes are made, where they shop, where they go on vacation and how - tell me about the three seashells! (#ObscureDemolitionManReference) In short: Details!
Various preferences: If I’ve specified a ship and you don’t like it, please don’t feel obligated to write it. However, I would really rather you did not write those characters into other ships in the story (unless it’s canonical, or mentions of past relationships). Likewise, please don’t erase canonical love interests. AUs are OK, but I would really rather read about the canon universe.
Now, author, if you’ve read the above and think “but I only write gen” or “but I hate plotty stories” or “I couldn’t write casefic to save my life” - really, really don’t worry.
Jeeves & Wooster
Reginald Jeeves
Bertram "Bertie" Wooster
This is one of my comfort fandoms. I take such joy in the language - Wodehouse was a magician when it comes to words - and the characters and the masterful plots... but mostly in Jeeves. I have great affinity for Bertie and identify with him to a great extent, and so it's no wonder that I, too, am deeply fond of Jeeves. I see Jeeves as a deeply feeling person, who only appears cold and unflinching on the surface due to superhuman discipline. He is a man of scintillating intelligence, who also can be petty and jealous when the mood strikes. It is the character interaction and interpersonal relationship I adore the most, as well as the clever, intelligent humor.
Wants: I do ship these two, and I would absolutely adore some UST ending in, erm, resolved tension. If you don't care to write that, I'd love a story based on their mutual admiration and friendship. Ideally, I would prefer a story written in first person. Bertie, of course, narrates most of the stories in canon, but if you are more of a Jeeves, or would rather write in his voice, nothing would please me more. I believe Bertie is genuinely intelligent and clever, and I love when this is shown in writing. Particularly if Jeeves comes to realize it/comes to Bertie's defense if someone belittles him.
Do Not Wants: Jeeves or Bertie paired with other characters. Jeeves or Bertie dying. No PWP, please, I prefer my porn with added plot. No hurt without comfort. No mention of bodily fluids other than blood, semen or saliva in a sexual context. No body horror/permanent disfigurement.
Oxventure: Blades in the Dark
Barnaby Fortescue III
Edvard Lumière
While I am not at all disappointed with the ending, I hate the idea of never knowing what happens next! I love both the setting and the characters, and particularly how the tone walks such a perfect line between horror, humor and realism. I do not peresonally ship these two, but I don't mind if you do and would like to write them that way. (Genuinely. I know I'd worry if I saw that in a prompt, so let me assure you: It is more than fine to write Edvard/Barnaby slash.).
