Kuroshitsuji Wiki... to migrate from Fandom Wiki!
Tumblr media
Hello! A few weeks ago, I made a post regarding a recent issue with Fandom Wiki that has made many pages on the Kuroshitsuji Wiki unable to be edited and asked people to participate in a survey asking whether a wiki migration would be okay considering the circumstances.
And now, it's time to reveal the results!
(As the survey is now closed, all infos regarding Kuroshitsuji Wiki's issue with Fandom Wiki in particular and Fandom Wiki's problems in general can be found here.)
Thank you to everyone who shared my posts and took the time to participate! A total of 63 people participated in the main survey.
Tumblr media
59 out of 63 voted "yes," 3 "neutral," and only one "no."
In the smaller-scale poll I conducted on tumblr directly, in which 22 people participated, the results were similar.
Tumblr media
18 out of 22 voted "yes," 3 "neutral," and only one "no."
As such, I can announce with great joy that Kuroshitsuji Wiki will migrate from Fandom Wiki in 2025!
Results to the second question of the survey "Did you ever have any issues with Fandom?", your comments, and a preliminary "battle plan" for the migration can be found under the cut.
Second question results
Tumblr media
14 said that they never had any issues with Fandom, 14 had minor issues with Fandom, 8 had major issues, 15 said they despised Fandom, and 12 reported they had no strong feelings about Fandom.
Of 63 participants, 29 were so kind to tell me what exactly their issues with Fandom were/are. (Out of them, 5 mentioned that they were wiki editors themselves or had, at least, a Fandom wiki account.)
Most common complaints:
The absurd amount of ads: This was mentioned by 18 people. They said that the ads are placed terribly and clutter the screen which makes navigating wikis more difficult - or even near-impossible. 3 people mentioned that they (even despite using adblockers!) often cannot access Fandom wikis because going on the website crashes their browers, pages freeze up, or all the ads make even short pages load very slowly.
Layout: 8 people complained that Fandom wikis were hard to navigate because of their layout, i.a. because of the sidebar, the ads, and formatting. The bad layout was also noted to decrease the readability of pages.
Mobile experience: 3 people specifically mentioned how awful it is to go to Fandom Wikis on their phones, i.a. because of the ads.
Other complaints:
Inability to edit pages because of the abuse filter/the offensive terms policy (Maurice's page was mentioned specifically)
Bad content moderation of some wikis
Fandom keeps logging them out
Website seems user-unfriendly in general
Using wikis for ad money and profit
Generally terrible functionality
AI usage
Lack of customisation of wikis makes everything the same
(One person simply wrote "gives me a headache" which sounds so like Violet, it's my favourite.)
Thank you all for your complaints! It was very refreshing reading them all because I could only nod along. I was particularly glad to read that people said that Fandom makes their browser crash, pages freeze up, and articles load slowly because I had/have the same issues. While Season 4 was running and I was writing the episode summaries, doing the image galleries, etc., my browser crashed all the time. Part of my plight is immortalised in article histories^^'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the very least, Fandom automatically saves your progress or I might have killed someone. Still, having your page freeze up and your browser crash mid-edit is horrible, and I often had to restart my laptop afterwards too -.- (And I have a gaming laptop that was, at that time, just a year old!) I thought it was merely a problem with my laptop, so hearing you mention the same problem was very reassuring.
While long loading times for short pages were mentioned, loading times for long pages can be outright abysmal. There was a time no one from the admin team could really open up and edit Ciel's and Sebastian's pages (the two longest pages on the wiki). It was horrid.
I also like that the terrible mobile experience was highlighted a few times because, believe it or not, many decisions Fandom Wiki has made to their layout and such were meant to improve the mobile experience (often to the detriment of the desktop site). Wikis look so ugly and everything is extra "stripped-down" on mobile so that wikis would "run better and more smoothly on phones." Maybe we would know if this was actually true were it not for all the ads, hm?
Your comments
Thank you to the 15 people who left a comment! Most spoke out again in favour of a migration in their comment, saying that it would be for the best - one expressed their support despite having nothing against Fandom Wiki personally.
(Some of the comments were specifically for me which I didn't expect and so, so kind even. Thanks for wishing me luck and all your nice words. :'))
The only question that really came up was who would be the wiki's new host. I will answer this in the next section :)
(Preliminary) "battle plan" to move the wiki
Wiki's Next Host Site
One comment specifically suggested Miraheze as the next host, and another mentioned the migration history of the Twisted Wonderland Wiki (it moved first to Miraheze and then to wiki.gg).
While I am not opposed to the Kuro Wiki moving to Miraheze as I have nothing against that platform, I think it would be best for the Kuroshitsuji Wiki to move to wiki.gg.
My main reason for that is the fact that Miraheze cannot help migrating wikis with moving their images to their platform. An image dump can be given to Miraheze, but they cannot help gather all images. Fandom Wiki also prohibits the automated scraping of images.
The Kuroshitsuji Wiki currently has over 6k images.
Tumblr media
So downloading and re-uploading them all manually is off the table. (I uploaded a great many images to the wiki but not all of them, and I'm just one person orz)
If you move a wiki to wiki.gg, however, the wiki.gg staff moves all images for you.
I moved another wiki of mine to wiki.gg (Ron Kamonohashi Wiki), and all its ~1,600 images were moved (I did not expect this at all, honestly; I was fully prepared (though dreading) to reupload everything. In that case though, I had uploaded the vast majority of images (really, like 98%) myself anyway, so I didn't have to download them first). Only 32 images "broke" in the move and had to be re-uploaded which was fine.
(Videos are not moved as they are only "linked" to wikis anyway. There are not many on the Kuro Wiki in the first place though, so embeding them with a template is quickly done, like I did on my other wiki (example). Videos are often too large to be uploaded, so they need to be embeded instead.)
Secondly, Miraheze is known for server outages which can cause data loss. The Twisted Wonderland Wiki was affected by such an outage once when it was still at Miraheze. (They did not leave the platform for that reason, but because Miraheze nearly closed in 2023. (This, thankfully, did not happen in the end; still, the news caused quite the panic.))
Further, wiki.gg possesses a better SEO than Miraheze. The moving of a wiki's content is the "easy" part of a wiki migration. The difficult part is for the new wiki to beat the Fandom Wiki in search results and visibility because Fandom will not delete a wiki after its community has migrated.
(To the person who wrote they wish I can "cleanly remove myself from Fandom Wiki," that, sadly, cannot happen.)
Tumblr media
(Source)
(The image is a bit outdated because wiki.gg now hosts non-gaming related wikis too.)
As you can see from the pictured table, one of the pros for wiki.gg is "best mobile experience."
And I have to say, it really is fantastic, omg. When I moved my other wiki, I did not look at its mobile version while I prepared for the re-launch; I only accessed it on mobile afterwards, and the gasp I let out when I finally did, I tell you...
Let's take two pages (a character page and the main/home page) from the RKDD Wiki as examples. (Templates are the same as on the Kuro Wiki.) I logged out before I took the screenshots.
On Fandom Wiki's mobile version, these pages look like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Advertisement before the top navigation already; ads at the bottom
Weird auto-playing video ad at the top of the character page
The "gallery" tag that is used in infoboxes to "tab" the images is broken
Ads between all the sections (note: "Durchfall" means diarrhoea, btw...)
The scrollboxes don't work, so all references are rolled out in full at the bottom of the page (there are 300+ refs! have fun scrolling)
The note references don't work and give out an error message
The quote template has become very ugly and reduced (the source of the quote, though given, is omitted on mobile)
The notice spoiler template was stripped of its colours and formatting (note: all templates that are categorised as "notice" are actually invisible for non-logged in users by default on Fandom mobile; you have to categorise them as "design" or so for them to be visible at all)
The main page on mobile is not the main page on desktop, and only shows you trending articles and categories; you have to click on "view full main page" a bit farther below to see the actual main page
If you do, you find broken code, e.g. a broken slider and a broken character portal template
To compare, the same pages on wiki.gg's mobile version:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Advertisement at the top of the page and at the bottom
No auto-playing video ad
The "gallery" tag in the infoboxes work
No ads between the sections
The scrollboxes work and contain the references
The note references work
The notice templates look just like on desktop
If you have references popups enabled on your wiki, the popups also work on mobile! (on Fandom, clicking on the ref on mobile will send you to the bottom of the page, even if popups are enabled)
The main page looks just like the desktop version
No code is broken on the main page, e.g. sliders and character portal templates work just fine and (mostly) look as they should
I also added a screenshot of how the site navigation looks like because I think it looks neat??
While Miraheze has no ads whatsoever which is great, wiki.gg does have ads, but only very few. (And only if you're logged out.) They're definitely not as invasive as on Fandom Wiki. There is an ad at the top of a page and another at the bottom. On desktop, there is one on the side too. That's it.
Example page from wiki.gg:
Tumblr media
The same page on Fandom:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
... Yeah.
(I had to turn off my adblockers and malwarebites for the ads to reappear on Fandom. And then the page froze :D The browser I opened the wiki on didn't die (I use it less frequently, so less adblockers to turn off) - but another browser I have open did???)
Because wiki.gg has only existed since 2022, it does not have all the MediaWiki extensions like Miraheze does. The wiki.gg staff is working on this though. I'm particularly excited about polls and discourse forums, two features Fandom Wiki killed in the last years (forums were replaced by the undercooked Discussions, and polls are more annoying to add to pages (they are embeded Discussion polls) and only logged-in users can participate in them).
Wiki.gg would be the first choice. In the off-chance my migration request is denied, Miraheze would be the second choice.
Migration schedule
You have to send in a request if you want to open a wiki on wiki.gg. I plan to do that in early January. Because the new wiki needs to differ from the old one so that Google doesn't mark it as a duplicate, new content has to be created and old content edited. I will start with that before I send in my request. (For example, I plan to do the much needed and long overdue story arc page overhauls. I only re-did the Public School Arc page so far orz)
After the request is (hopefully) accepted, the onboarding phase begins. If a wiki is "onboarding," only those with a password can edit it; it's not open to the public. This gives editors the time and opportunity to fix up pages and code so that everything would be (more or less) in place when the wiki becomes public. Onboarding lasts a maximum of 4 weeks, but you can ask your wiki to become public before the deadline too.
So, the new Kuroshitsuji Wiki would launch either in late January or sometime in February - right in time for Season 5 in April. (And for when the manga returns from hiatus; whenever that will be.)
To summarise, the preliminary schedule is as follows:
late December to early January: work on pages for the new wiki
early January: send in wiki request
January-early (mid?) February: onboarding period
late January/early (mid?) February: re-launch! the new wiki becomes public
If anything greatly changes, I will let you know. As soon as I get the onboarding deadline date (if the wiki.gg request is accepted), I will be able to provide a better schedule.
----
I think that's it for now? I hope I haven't forgotten anything important. Thank you for reading all that! And merry Christmas and happy holidays!
If you have anything to add or want to ask a question, please feel free to do so.

I reported my boss to HR for discrimination last week. Please tell me if I'm crazy.
My old boss got promoted so around October I got a new supervisor. We've been coworkers for about 5 years and had a friendly relationship. I'd been to her house, met her kids, we chit chatted a lot. When she started approving my time cards she noticed I was using about 3-5 hours of PTO per week at random times. I explained this was an informal arrangement I had with my previous supervisor due to my disability. I have C-PTSD and ADHD which honestly make it difficult to get through the day pretty much every day. Sometimes I need more breaks and if I'm using my PTO and being honest, who cares right? Well the new supervisor cared. She told me that if I couldn't be a full time employee they couldn't justify our headcount and my job was on the line unless I made this a formal arrangement. I was really hurt but I did it, I got all the doctors notes together and figured--while I'm formalizing it, I actually do need extra therapy so I'm gonna make my FMLA (family medical leave act) time include these sessions.
All this is approved obviously because one thing I'm not is self diagnosed. I've got medical records a mile high. So starting in January this official leave time goes into effect and I can use up to 7 hours of PTO per week. Before all this began my supervisor consistently praised me as a "rockstar" employee, saying I was the only person on the team who truly follows the rules. In general I was thought of as an excellent worker and had received a promotion. The team that I lead smashed our goals for 2023. But, strangely, once I start the FMLA my supervisor begins complaining about my lack of productivity. I kept a spreadsheet as a tool for my ADHD where I tracked how I was spending my time so I volunteered to let her see it so she could figure it out. Instead of sending the spreadsheet tracking my work in 5 minute increments once or twice, this woman has had me sending it every week for the past 7 months. Every Monday we have our 1:1 and she lets me know how poorly I'm doing. She also sends me an email on Mondays where she counts every email I have in my inbox, every claim I have across multiple programs, every minute of meetings I have scheduled and sends me the amount of time she expects it to take and if I don't make it then we have to talk about my "problems".
Now I'm practically never making it. I've appealed to her and to her boss so many times that there is something wrong with this formula they've come up with to calculate my workload--and they both just think I'm lying. Long story short in May I started measuring my time not on the spreadsheet but by the individual tasks in the email and not only am I keeping up, but there's a full 5-6 hours of work every week that she hasn't been counting (including 3 hours talking on the phone---with her!). I bring this up at our 1:1 in late May and say, See there really is something wrong with your measurement. I'm right on track productivity wise with these tasks. She doesn't acknowledge at all the flaw I've found in her formula but DOES say, "I do think there's been an improvement in your productivity and I expect it will continue to improve as you get more therapy." Full on MASK OFF. So my "productivity issues" are improved by therapy, meaning she's been ascribing those issues to my disability. Incredible.
I go to HR the next day to have this interaction on the record. First time I've gone to HR about anything ever. They are so concerned that they are going to launch an investigation and I tearfully plead with them not to because my boss's boss is out on medical leave and I don't want to cause huge problems while she's away and can't moderate. I didn't realize it would automatically cause an investigation to report this. The lady takes pity on me and says they won't investigate for now.
The VERY NEXT DAY my supervisor tells us in a team meeting (other people there to witness) that she's got a funny story about her son. It's some innocent story about how he's grounded and can't go to a party, but she continues on by talking about how she has to be extra strict with him because he has ADHD. If she doesn't enforce consequences, he'll never learn! And he has to learn because when he grows up his boss isn't going to take his ADHD as an excuse. "Policies are policies" she said, "Your boss isn't going to accept an answer like I know I was supposed to do four things but I only got to three because...." She even went further talking about how he's having trouble learning to drive because of his ADHD and just laughing about it. When he has to do something, she says, she has to remind him multiple times and set timers and double check with him otherwise he'll forget.
So I'm fucking flabbergasted at this point, right? This whole time I've been feeling like this time tracking is discriminatory and here she is just spelling it out for me in neon letters: YES, IT ACTUALLY IS. So I'm biding my time until her boss gets back from medical leave. But after 3 weeks of showing her that her method is flawed she tells me I don't have to do the spreadsheet anymore. Her boss is back but cancelled our first meeting, so I figure: If the bullshit stops, for the sake of my career and mental health I'm gonna let this go. My supervisor goes on vacation for 2 weeks. I'm doing my work exactly as I want to without the added pressure and everything is going great.
Once she gets back though we have our 1:1 and she asks me where my emails were on the 2 past Fridays telling her if I got all my work done. Which she never asked me to do, btw. Reader---I mcfreakin lost it. I belligerently asked why this was still necessary, that I felt picked on and bullied, that she isn't doing this to anyone else on the team, and that I'm sick and tired of constantly being demoralized by her leadership. I told her that I was going to talk to her boss directly about this situation. She was pissed. She actually unfriended me on facebook which for middle aged women is like throwing a grenade.
Next day I talk to her boss. I bring my evidence because of course I've been taking notes. The situation is serious. HR has become involved. And just because there are anti-retaliatory rules for reporting protected concerns doesn't actually protect me from getting fired. Suddenly I'm fearful about everything. I'm afraid I'm going to lose my job and my health insurance, bye bye therapy,, bye bye surgery I need. I've been at this job 6 years and the animosity is at an all time high. Christ almighty.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
October 1, 2024
Heather Cox Richardson
Oct 02, 2024
More than 45,000 U.S. dock workers went on strike today for the first time since 1977, nearly 50 years ago. The International Longshoremen's Association union, which represents 45,000 port workers, is negotiating with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) employer group over a new contract. The strike will shut down 36 ports from Maine to Texas, affecting about half the country’s shipping. Analysts from J.P. Morgan estimate that the strike could cost the U.S. economy about $5 billion a day. The strikers have said they will continue to unload military cargo.
Dockworkers want a 77% increase in pay over six years and better benefits, while USMX has said it has offered to increase wages by nearly 50%, triple employer contributions to retirement plans, and improve health care options. In the Washington Post, economics columnist Heather Long pointed out that the big issue at stake is the automation that threatens union jobs.
Although the strike threatens to slow the economy depending on how long it lasts, President Joe Biden has refused requests to force the strikers back to work, reiterating his support for collective bargaining. He noted that ocean carriers have made record profits since the pandemic—sometimes in excess of 800% over prepandemic levels—and that executive compensation and shareholder profits have reflected those profits. “It’s only fair that workers, who put themselves at risk during the pandemic to keep ports open, see a meaningful increase in their wages as well,” Biden said in a statement.
In the presidential contest, the Trump-Vance campaign is trying to preserve its false narrative. In Wisconsin today, Trump accused Vice President Harris of murder—although he appeared to get confused about the victim—and claimed that she has a phone app on which the heads of cartels can get information about where to drop undocumented immigrants. He also said that Kim Jong Un of North Korea is trying to kill him.
When asked if he should have been tougher on Iran after it launched ballistic missiles in 2020 on U.S. forces in Iraq, leaving more than 100 U.S. soldiers injured, Trump rejected the idea that soldiers with traumatic brain injuries were actually hurt. He said “they had a headache” and said he thought the attack “was a very nice thing because they didn’t want us to retaliate.”
Trump also backed out of a scheduled interview with 60 Minutes that correspondent Scott Pelley was slated to conduct on Thursday. 60 Minutes noted that for more than 50 years, the show has invited both campaigns to appear on the broadcast before the election and this year, both campaigns agreed to an interview. Trump’s spokesperson complained that 60 Minutes “insisted on doing live fact checking, which is unprecedented.” Vice President Kamala Harris will participate in her interview as planned.
The campaign’s resistance to independent fact checking of their false narrative came up in tonight’s vice presidential debate on CBS between Minnesota governor Tim Walz, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’s running mate, and Ohio senator J.D. Vance, running mate for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. CBS Evening News anchor Norah O'Donnell and Face the Nation moderator and chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan moderated the debate.
Walz’s goal in the debate was to do no harm to Vice President Harris’s campaign, and he achieved that. Vance’s goal was harder: to give people a reason to vote for Donald Trump. It is doubtful he moved any needles there.
The moments that did stand out in the debate put a spotlight on Vance’s tenuous relationship with the truth. When Vance lied again about the migrants in Springfield, Ohio, who are in the United States legally, Brennan added: "Just to clarify for our viewers, Springfield, Ohio, does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status."
Vance responded: "The rules were that you guys weren't going to fact-check.”
There were two other big moments of the evening, both based in lies. First, Vance claimed that Trump, who tried repeatedly to repeal or weaken the Affordable Care Act, “saved” it. Then, Walz asked Vance directly if Trump lost the 2020 presidential election. Vance refused to answer, saying he is “focused on the future,” and warned that “the threat of censorship” is the real problem in the U.S.
Walz said: “That’s a damning non-answer.”
Former chair of the Republican Party Michael Steele said after the debate: “I don't care where you are on policy…. If you cannot in 2024 answer that question, you are unfit for office.”
It was significant that Vance tried to avoid saying either that Trump won in 2020—a litmus test for MAGA Republicans—or that he lost, a reflection of reality. While this debate probably didn’t move a lot of voters for the 2024 election, what it did do was make Vance look like a far more viable candidate than his running mate. Waffling on the Big Lie seemed designed to preserve his candidacy for future elections.
It seems likely that the message behind Vance’s smooth performance wasn’t lost on Trump. As the debate was going on, Trump posted: “The GREAT Pete Rose just died. He was one of the most magnificent baseball players ever to play the game. He paid the price! Major League Baseball should have allowed him into the Hall of Fame many years ago. Do it now, before his funeral!”
Former Cincinnati Reds baseball player Rose died yesterday at 83.

I think it is very revealing how news outlets like Time Magazine, The New York Times, etc talk about anger towards Biden's aiding and abetting of genocide as being a sentiment "among progressives". This vague framing serves a few purposes simultaneously-- first and most obviously it minimizes the number of people opposed to the genocide of Palestinians, implicitly painting a picture of this being a small group of shrill voices set against an assumed neutral moderate majority who either approve of, or at least aren't seriously bothered by, the actions of Israel. The lack of specificity is really key, though, because it lets the writer and reader layer in their own unspoken idea of who "progressives" are. By how they are described, though, it is often clear that this means two broad groups:
Young, college educated white residents of large cities and school campuses, usually assumed to be perpetually complaining but with no sense of how the "real world" works, and unrepresentative of "the real issues" facing racial minorities and targets of colonial violence. This interpretation quietly enforces the idea that only naive whiny white kids care about this, excluding the idea that people of color also very much care about and are affected by this. By painting it this way, by invoking it as something only white kids care about, the writer and reader can neatly sidestep listening to people of color or anyone outside the imperial core.
Basically any or every minority. Racial, sexual, gender, religious, economic, anything. You are invited to quite literally fill in the blank with anyone who isn't a cishet white suburbanite with a white collar profession. This assumption is written to appeal more directly to conservatives and racists, obviously. Crucially, though, also towards the self styled practical moderate who may believe that people of color are sympathetic in their pain but "too personally attached" to be rational and objective about the situation. You see this one very clearly in the recent reporting on Biden meeting with Muslim American community leaders.
What is important to note is that more often than not when "progressives" are invoked as a group, the speaker means both of these at the same time. Despite that seeming entirely contradictory (exclusively white vs not) the intention and mechanical purpose of both are the same: to reinforce the authority of the speaker and the imperialist project at large, and discredit Palestinians and the very notion of solidarity with them.

HOH Steve Harrington Head Cannons
A few head cannons about Steve’s journey (mostly based on my own development of hearing issues in my late teens). Let me know your own head cannons or experiences in the comments!
• Steve doesn’t really notice (or if he does he ignores it) his gradual hearing loss. He does notice he’s more tired and irritable and feels angry at everything.
• When his friends start to notice they tell him he had a “hearing problem” and he should see a doctor. Steve insists he does not. They argue about it a few times, Eddie stands behind him quietly and says “yes you do” and looks at Robin pointedly when Steve does not notice or respond.
• Steve’s hearing loss developed from a few instances; Nancy firing her gun in his vicinity, demogorgan screeching, Billy breaking the plate on his ear, and lastly and most effective being tortured by Russians.
• When he does eventually get to the doctor, they tell him he has moderate to severe hearing loss and it may get worse.
• People tend to think he’s rude since his eye contact is bad (they don’t realize he’s reading their lips).
•When he gets hearing aids, Steve chooses blue because he decided if people were going to see them anyway, he wanted a fun color.
• Steve gets so exhausted by the end of the day he sits at the kitchen island with his head down breathing heavy. Eddie, Dustin, or Robin will usually pick up after him, the shoes he kicked off and the keys he threw on the table that slid off, etc.
• Steve still like to order. If he is in the drive thru he makes the passenger repeat what the server said.
• He bought a motorcycle because he can *feel* the engine roar.
• When Corroded Coffin plays, they let him sit on or against the speakers.
• They all learn some sign. Robin loves it (the linguist) and complains about what a lazy signer Steve is. He finger spells too much and can be very bad at grammar.
•Eddie thinks the little sounds Steve makes when he signs are cute, but will never tell him because he’s afraid it would sound weird or patronizing.
• Steve always laughs when the others stomp up to him to let him know they’re coming.
•Dustin throws stuff at him to get his attention.
• His hearing aids are overwhelming and he takes them out constantly (he hates the arcade) but sometimes he loses them, and he tears the place apart looking for them in panic.
• DO NOT touch his hearing aids. Ever.
• Eddie let’s Steve touch his throat to feel him talking.
•NOTE: please never fake a disability or culture online. It’s not cool and can (intentionally or unintentionally) spread misinformation, stereotypes, and polarization about the group you are pretending to be a part of. You CAN do damage by faking any kind of culture or disability, even if it feels harmless. Feel free to make content starring people from diverse backgrounds and experiences, just always be sure to do your research and try to stay away from stereotypes and harmful messages/misinformation.

i've been having some thoughts about the way ppl use reddit as like, a last bastion of reliable product reviews recently, because i generally do agree that it's better than like, company websites, usually. but that's kind of a low bar.
first, i should point out a lot of people on reddit suspect that many positive product reviews are written by bots or undisclosed pr. i think this sometimes veers into paranoia, but it's....definitely a number higher than zero, of accounts that fit one or both of these categories. it's especially been a topic of conversation in light of the situation with blake lively, and i've seen people throw around quotes about companies taking advantage of the fact that people trust reddit reviews to plant the bot/undisclosed pr/advertising accounts....i cannot speak to the veracity of this. but i do know there are some accounts, if you look at their comment history, it's......suspicious in this regard. this goes both for positive pr for a company, and campaigns done to make rival companies look bad.
however i think even the real people reviews are...eh....should be viewed with a degree of skepticism, and you should probably make note of the context of them before taking them too much to heart.
broadly speaking, ime, brand-focused subreddits fall into three categories: a place for employees to kvetch amongst themselves (r/target, even if the sub rules technically say otherwise); fanclubs of people who really don't like to hear anything negative about the brand (r/mooncat has...gotten better over the past year but still generally fits in this i think); and a place for customers and former fans to get together and complain about how the company/products aren't as good as they used to be (r/glossier). obviously this is an oversimplification (thinking only of subreddits i hang out in, r/simplynailogical and r/ios both i think are a fifty-fifty mix of the latter two categories which. is fun. lmao) but i still think is broadly true
obviously the subs that will only accept the most glowing and positive of reviews aren't trustworthy, but i don't think the other two are either. both of these other types of communities, whether on reddit or otherwise, are fed largely by people complaining. now, complaining in moderation is fine, healthy for you even. but when you base (intentionally or not) a whole community on it, suddenly everything becomes a source of complaint. the negative posts are the ones that get the most attention, and suddenly everyone who ever had a negative experience will add to the conversation, and it's very easy for this to snowball into more drastic stories and complaints. people who think a product is good, actually, or even just fine can get downvoted to oblivion and accused of being pr or bootlickers (another issue i have with my first point lol)
there's also a lot to be said for reviews of things in general, which is that people are often way more likely to go out of their way to complain about something they think was bad than they are to praise something that's good, especially online and especially on a site like reddit that doesn't really like influencers or wannabe influencers, overall
this isn't to say don't ever trust reddit reviews or anything, but don't, like, blindly trust them. don't hold reddit up as some paragon of honesty in an otherwise bot-filled internet because there are bots and influencers on there too, they're just very unlikely to disclose that fact (which is honestly more insidious than people who are upfront about it!). skim through the rest of the subreddit, see if it's just overwhelming negativity to the point of just being a circlejerk (whether it's a cj sub or not!). you can check people's comment history if something seems off to you, and you can (and should!) look at multiple places for reviews of things, especially expensive things like tech or cars.

Also just another day where I see people saying "DID doesnt work like that! You cant have that communication with parts that is FAKING or [insert arm chair diagnosis]" and like, since we moved in with our fiance and out of both school environment and our parents, we usually have 2-3 parts up here like half the time and at times have just had like 5-8 parts at once in actual stable not-brain-hurty co-con / co-front as well as pretty open fluid switching and fronting between almost all of our "main fronters" especially when out of the house or in the car.
Like uh huh.
(tw brief trafficking mention)
We - at the very least - are a system that experienced some level programming, CSA, since-birth physical abuse, and literally didn't have a single not shit person regularly in our life until we were like 19 thus resulting in our polyfragmented DID that we've seen and been diagnosed by a professional who literally worked with a sector of the FBI that worked with human trafficking as one of their main therapists - must definitely be miss diagnosed and/or faking because we *checks notes* went through extensive therapy with a really skilled and experienced dedicated specialist of a professional for 5 years and 3+ years with a really skilled not-dedicated specialist and actually are *checks notes* recovering?
*checks notes* Yeah apparently signs of healing and recovery means we are misdiagnosed or faking got it.
Interesting take but ok lol
Really gotta love how the same people who say that shit are the ones that are always touting about how people are "anti-recovery" or whatever for posting not completely chronically negative content and actually having a relationship with their parts and THEN go to be like "final fusion and functional multiplicity are great" like.... like dude, you can't be saying that having lowered dissociative barriers and communication issues is "fake and signs of a misdiagnosis" and then say that its healing
Pick one my dude 😂
It's my favorite thing to clown on cause ok sure I guess we've been misdiagnosed three times and are certainly faking cause we *check notes* are actually healing.
Like I know where it comes from, but how about yall focus on your healing and recovery that is probably making you so miserable that you cant stand to see people being okay with their life and the same disorder rather than you know, judging how people have learned to be happy.
Just a ya know thought.
Or TLDR: Cope.
-XIV
(BTW nothing came up to trigger this, I just have an attitude driven love for complaining and bitch about things and its a hobby that I moderate but really felt like bitching about this common thing casue its just really that fucking funny to me. I'm not at all "actually mad" I just, do this.)

"Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship" (Executive Order analysis)
Direct Link: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/protecting-the-meaning-and-value-of-american-citizenship/
Archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20250121092259/https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/protecting-the-meaning-and-value-of-american-citizenship/
This is the ending Birthright Citizenship order. There's going to be A LOT of legal analysis about whether or not the President can do this.
My assumption is that he probably can't but I believe this is a gambit to provoke legal challenges that the White House can ride to the Supreme Court and overturn the specific legal precedents that allow for things that "blood and soil" nationalists complain about since forever, like "anchor babies."
I.e. the legal concept that as long as a child is born on American soil, the child is an American citizenship regardless of the legal status of the parents. Once a baby who is an American citizen is born, then it would be illegal to deport the infant and morally vile to deport the parents and transfer custody of the baby to citizens.
You can make up your own mind about whether Birthright Citizenship is good. Lots of countries that I would not characterize as "evil" do not have it. There is an argument to be made that immigrants should be encouraged to pursue citizenship in order to pass it on to their children and that this would be good for social cohesion.
On the other hand, the Great Replacement Theory is absurd and racist, and the 2024 election ironically proved it: a racially diverse country will not automatically skew Democratic and as it turns out, the Republicans didn't even really need to moderate on race or immigration because lots of non-white people have their own critiques of progressive frameworks around race.
Additionally an argument can be made that absent zeroing out immigration entirely, the end of Birthright Citizenship could lead to a situation where there is a very large population with no say in how they are governed and whose residency will always be subject to revocation. That is a recipe for exploitation, family separation, and other forms of abuse and suffering.
What concerns me most is that this coincides with discussion about de-naturalization. While the original usage of Birthright citizenship was to clarify the status of emancipated slaves after the Civil War, I do not think that retroactively stripping Black Americans of their citizenship en masse is a serious consideration.
I do think that Birthright Citizenship is a wedge issue to open up the door to revoking the  citizenship of children whose parents would otherwise be subject to deportation. It could theoretically lead to legal frameworks where immigrants who obtained citizenship the hard way: through naturalization, could have their status revoked under the right circumstances. The right circumstances likely being conviction of a crime, a crime that may or may not be based on bad faith charges that are politically or racially motivated.
While I am not saying we are specifically headed down this path, it should be noted that opening up Germany's citizenship laws to reclassify legal citizenships as non-citizens was one of the early steps that led to the Holocaust. Once you have a large population of formerly enfranchised people who now lack legal status, that creates a humanitarian crisis where millions of people who were previously able to work and live without special dispensation from the state, now are entirely dependent on the state or on obtaining fraudulent documents. That leads to internment camps and attempts at mass deportation. When mass deportation fails, then we move further still towards "final solutions."
Lots of countries don't take that final step and just deal with the fact they now have concentration camps full of people that they can't get someone else to take responsibility for. It generally sucks for both the country running the concentration camps and the people in the camps. Just ask Turkey and the refugees from the assorted Middle Eastern wars over the last two decades. Or the Palestinians.
But sometimes countries do wind up trying to exterminate people they have turned into dependents. Germany did and while the Nazis invented some novel ways to go about it, genocides themselves are not novel in history.
Again, I'm not trying to be alarmist. I am not predicting this necessarily, but I am very confident that ending Birthright Citizenship is step 1 on the road to Denaturalization and I am very confident that Denaturalization will be attempted if revoking Birthright Citizenship is upheld. Which I think there is a good chance it will, but I don't think its absolute: SCOTUS has defied Trump in the past.
Whether Denaturalization will be accepted by SCOTUS and other relevant entities is something I feel less certain on.
What step 3 would be after Denaturalization becomes a thing and whether it would escalate, I also do not pretend to know.
But I do worry.
Other EOs that may interact with this one in concerning ways:
"Protecting the American People From Invasion" (Archive)
Demands a major build up of border enforcement and detention capacities. Uses very militaristic and threatening language. Does not go far enough in my mind to distinguish between undocumented immigrants seeking safety and prosperity from cartels, smugglers etc.
Mass deportation requirements cooperating nations to receive the deported. This is part of the story of how the Guantanamo Bay prison continued to house Global War on Terror detainees despite promises to shut it down.
"Guaranteeing the States Protection Against Invasion" (Archive)
More extraordinary action to "secure the borders" more militaristic language.
"Designating Cartels and Other Organizations as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists." (Archive)
This might be the "invade Mexico" EO. We'll see. But this specifically opens the door to prosecuting anyone who can be labeled a cartel member as a terrorist and executing them, or just killing them as a "military action." For more discussion about why this stuff worries me, see the next post where I give my reactions to "Restoring the Death Penalty and Protecting Public Safety" (Archive)

OCT 2
Trump’s spokesperson complained that 60 Minutes“insisted on doing live fact checking, which is unprecedented.” Vice President Kamala Harris will participate in her interview as planned.

Note
at the end of the day, you're going to get haters. if they don't spread it to gossip blogs, they'll spread it privately. the krpc loves drama and gossip before anything. // unpopular take, but my god. if you don’t feel comfortable bringing up your concerns to an admin, complaining privately is DEFINITELY the lesser of two evils. by far. and before you leap at my throat, i just mean discuss your concerns with one or two friends who you trust (and like really trust, not new friends) and like think twice before bringing that shit here? (unless, of course, it’s about a serious issue like racism, ableism, bigotry, etc with HARD evidence). there’s a reason why most western rps can close without setting the rest of the community in flames, and it’s because the vent blog/call out culture is way smaller/more contained there at the moment. it’s not because they lack ooc drama or people who start shit any more than your typical krp. trust me.
you might feel spiteful in the moment, and it’s “just rp”, but y’all really have the potential to hurt people in unintended ways by coming to a vent blog. your feelings may cool off/the situation might change at some point (like maybe the admin updates you that they resolved the issue, or the member u have a problem with leaves) by the time the aftermath hits. you can’t go back and edit anons, and you can’t decide when/how soon anons are posted. deciding to use this blog as a stage for ooc conflict is so risky because things can spiral out of control so easily when everyone is anonymous.
also, side note. if you don’t trust an admin enough to have them moderate any type of ooc conflict, i don’t understand why you would stay in that group. i think that the responsibilities members have in keeping the ooc atmosphere safe are way too overlooked on here. it’s not just admins who control the community’s energy ooc. no hate to op btw! i know i just ran off with that one line i’m replying to.

Week 4: Digital Community and Fandom: Reality TV
Social media platforms have proven to be popular and powerful in today's globalized world, reaching every segment of the entertainment sector, including reality television. In this blog, let's learn how Reality TV has shaped digital communities and fandoms. Specifically, we will explore one region - Vietnam.
Tumblr media
In simple terms, a program features real people (untrained and/or ensemble actors) in real settings (not studios) acting out events based on their real lives or played by real people. The television creation created is called reality television, according to Kraszewski (2017) (Schneider 2018). In Vietnam, 2023 is called the year of the boom of reality TV shows because, after many years of silence, audiences once again have countless choices for entertainment, from music game shows to reality TV shows. Lively, humorous, drama reality TV, listed as: Masked Singer, 2 Days 1 Night, Rap Viet, The Face Vietnam, Vietnam Idol, Beautiful Girl riding the wind to break the waves, First to make a living, Having an appointment with youth, Hanging out and singing, Brilliant Journey, The New Mentor. (TRE 2023).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, despite so many programs, quality still does not match quantity (Linh 2023). For example, in the program The Face Vietnam 2023, viewers are completely unable to focus on the talent, qualifications, and skills of the contestants but are often caught up in the never-ending battle of the coaches (Chi & Page 2023).
Tumblr media
Like The Face Vietnam 2023, the same goes for The New Mentor program. Throughout all nine broadcast episodes, the audience did not clearly see the leadership talent and guidance of the contestants but only saw the coach focusing on "mouth" to compete for contestants or "complain" about the results of the competitions (Chi & Trang 2023).
Tumblr media
Thereby, it can be seen that television programs are increasingly noisy, lacking moderation, and building many dramatic confrontations despite the audience's reactions. As Pham (2013) argues, "Current reality TV shows are still mainly based on scandals, are not really creative, are still half-baked, and are unprofessional. Reality TV shows in Vietnam are mainly for entertainment and advertising purposes for sponsors but do not carry the true meaning of reality TV shows like in other countries."
Besides, there is also another side that is dramatic dramas and details that have created opportunities for reality shows to become more famous by attracting audiences and viewers to comment on social networking sites such as Facebook, Youtube. Program crews post drama excerpts of celebrities or contestants to attract passionate fan communities to comment, defend and debate a common issue. For Example:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because those dramas create a community that can debate and share opinions with each other on social platforms, it can be concluded that reality shows in Vietnam have shaped the technical community. numbers and fan communities (Ozok & Zaphiris 2009). However, excessive drama brings negative things. Dr. Nguyen Tuan Anh (Youth Research Institute) said that conflicting situations on television are not only a war between stars but also a war between fan communities. “They argue with each other, even ready to insult and insult each other in cyberspace. These are uncivilized actions that need to be stopped immediately” (Linh 2023).

Tumblr media
[image ID: A screenshot of tumblr tags reading as follows:
#i still dont fully understand the proship vs antiship bullshit
#ive heard people saying that proship is another one of those labels pedophiles hide behind
End ID]
Okay, before anyone digs this person out of the tags to give them a hard time, they said a LOT more than this, and all of it is very sane and reasonable. But I wanted to address this particular point, so I grabbed just this.
I'm a regular on the AO3 subreddit. About once a week, we get some smug anti coming in to complain about the "LiTeRaL cHiLd PoRn" on AO3. They're usually expecting to find an echo chamber, and to be fair, on this topic we are one. We're just not echoing the position that they're expecting. Like AO3 itself, the subreddit is unapologetically pro-ship, down to the mods, some of whom are OTW volunteers themselves.
So antis show up, they get roundly mocked, and either vanish without a trace, or say something bad enough to get banned, either from the sub or from reddit itself. Honestly, the only reason to even click into these threads is to watch the drama; it happens so often.
Last night, I thought I was clicking into just another anti-post. It had a post title of "Is this something I can report?" Typical anti stuff. But when I clicked in, what came up was this:
Tumblr media
[image ID: a screenshot of an AO3 story summary. The fic title is "The Eyes that Watch the Cradle", the author name has been redacted, and it is listed as an original work, meaning no fandom. It contains the archive warnings Rape/Noncon and Underage, and the freeform tags include the following:
Father/Daughter Relationship, Original Male Character(s) / Original Female Character(s), Older Man / Young Girl - Relationship, Omorashi, Grooming, Lolicon, Gymnastics, leotard, Urination, Piss Play, Voyeurism, Rape, Non-Consensual Voyeurism, Teen Pregnancy, Inverted Nipples, gym clothes, Flexibility, Puberty, pee desperation, Pee, Childhood Trauma, Childhood Sexual Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Daddy issues, Daddy Kink, Foot Fetish, Sweat, Tickling, Non-Consensual Tickling, Flashing, Non-Consensual Groping, Dry Humping, Coming In Pants, Molestation, Loss of Innocence, Vibrators, Orgasm Denial, Dubious Consent, Religious Guilt, Religion, Catholic School, Catholic Guilt, Hand Jobs, Forced Masturbation, First Time.
The summary reads: Tom and the perverse grooming of an 11-year-old girl gymnast he becomes infatuated with, through the years, she marries him and has his children, he grooms them too.
WITH PICTURES!
Transcriber Note: I need a shower now. End ID]
The thread has since been deleted by moderators, but fortunately the reddit mobile app is broken AF, so I was able to get the above screenshot.
The whole thing is really icky, but I want to highlight this:
Tumblr media
[image ID: a screencap of just the phrase "WITH PICTURES!" taken from the previous image. End ID.]
I didn't track down the fic or click into it for obvious reasons (the FBI doesn't make a distinction between people consuming illegal content and people who just clicked in out of morbid curiosity), but others did, and reported that while there is no actual CSEM, there were photographs of very young children wearing leotards.
The implication is that these photos of kids are meant to be the ones being groomed and abused in the author's story.
Here is a representative sample of the comments on the thread:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[image ID: two screenshots from Reddit, displaying user comments.
User creampiebuni (with user flair "annoying shotacon") writes, "Pretty sure if it's linking to real photos of children, it can be reported. That crosses a big line."
They responded to themselves with, "Edit: I looked it up, yep, report, report, holy shit, this is not lolicon, this is just pedophilia."
User NataZing (the reddit thread's OP) replies, "I know, I only skimmed it, real nasty. Tried reporting it but it already had been so hopefully they get taken down
User parsious (with user flair "Definitely not an agent of the Fanfiction Deep State") replies, "If it had real pedo I would also be reporting to the police so they could talk to ao3 about user data... This sounds like the kind of person that needs to have a chat with the police."
User Connect-Sign5739 comments, "Yes, I'd report this. Including real pictures of children, even though non-pornographic, definitely crosses a line. Those real children shouldn't be associated with this story!"
User CatterMater (with user flair "Totally Not Boeing Mangement") writes, "Report, report, report."
User foreigner says, "WTF. [crying emoji]"
User andthennini writes, "Aside from how nauseating it sounds by the tags alone, if it actually has real people then I think it's reportable."
User ChaosieHyena says, "I gagged. Am pro fiction, but that's it FICTION. Any rpf (with images, no less) makes me genuinely queasy."

There is not a SINGLE comment in support of this author. Every single person, except for one dipshit who made a really tasteless joke and got downvoted into oblivion, expressed shock, disgust, and horror.
See for yourself. OP's screencap is gone on desktop (again, it still shows up on mobile, at least for now), but the thread is still there and comments are intact: https://www.reddit.com/r/AO3/comments/1czd7aw/is_this_something_i_can_report/

Do the staff of Yahoo read comments posted on their articles?
It is likely that some Yahoo staff members read comments posted on their articles. However, it is impossible to say for sure how many people read them or how often they are read. Yahoo has a large staff of editors and writers who are responsible for creating and curating content. It is possible that some of these staff members also take the time to read comments. Additionally, Yahoo may have a dedicated team of community moderators who are specifically responsible for monitoring comments and responding to users.
There are several reasons why Yahoo staff might read comments. First, comments can provide valuable feedback on the quality of Yahoo's content. If users are consistently complaining about an article, it may be a sign that the article is poorly written or inaccurate. Second, comments can help Yahoo to identify potential issues with its website or services. For example, if users are reporting technical problems, Yahoo can investigate and fix the problem. Third, comments can help Yahoo to better understand its audience. By reading comments, Yahoo can learn what its users are interested in and what they expect from Yahoo.
Even though some Yahoo staff members likely read comments, it is important to note that not all comments are read. Yahoo receives a large volume of comments every day, and it is simply not possible for staff members to read every single one. Additionally, some comments may be flagged for review by moderators before they are seen by Yahoo staff. This is typically done for comments that are abusive, hateful, or otherwise inappropriate.
Overall, it is likely that some Yahoo staff members read comments posted on their articles. However, it is difficult to say for sure how many people read them or how often they are read. Comments can provide valuable feedback to Yahoo, but it is important to note that not all comments are read.
