Haknyeon watched you as you gently applied ointment to the cut on his lip. It stung, but it was nothing compared to the pain he felt when he saw the bruises on your face. With trembling fingers, he reached out to the red and blue on your cheekbone, carefully running his thumb over it. You didn’t even flinch at the touch.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered. 

At his words you looked up, a frown etched onto your face. “You know it doesn’t hurt. It’s not a real bruise, so why are you apologizing? You should worry about yourself first.” As if to prove your point, you dabbed his lip with the cotton swab again, making him wince in pain.

“Still,” he pressed out. “You shouldn’t have to endure this.”

Your features softened a bit. “It doesn’t feel like enduring to me, Hak. You know that I don’t mind your job. You’re good at it too. Just look at you taking home all the wins despite being a rookie. Can't you see how amazing that is? Instead of apologizing you should be proud.”

“Proud?” He almost spat out the word. Maybe he’d felt proud of being a kick boxer before, but things had been different then. He hadn’t known you yet. “How could I feel pride if every hit I take leaves you bruised?”

“I can just cover them up.” You set aside the ointment and cotton swab to lay your hand over his that was still caressing your cheek. You turned your head and left a kiss on his palm. “It’s not a big deal.”

“But it is,” he whispered. “I chose this job at a time when I didn’t think I’d have a soulmate. Or maybe I just thought I wouldn’t care. I was a fool and I was selfish.” He let himself fall forward, forehead resting against your shoulder. “I wish I had chosen differently back then.”

You hugged him tight, pressing little kisses into his hair. “I don’t. Because all the choices we made until now led us to be here. And I like it here, Hak. I’m happy.”

His arms wrapped around you, pulling you impossibly closer. “Are you really?”

“I am. I promise. So, don’t beat yourself up about the details. Let’s be happy, okay?”

You thought you heard him sniff when he answered, “Okay.”

A big part of the Haikyuu rewatch is watching the characters interact and worrying that I fandomized their relationships too much in my head, particularly with the Karasuno first years because Hinata and Kags keep Yamaguchi and Tsukishima at arm’s length for so long. But then I remember. Oh wait the squad is literally Hinata’s phone background by the end of the story. You don’t put a picture of just some dudes in your after school club as your phone background.
