is the dickbabs romantic relationship always as bad as in Tom Taylor’s run or is it actually enjoyable in other runs? i want to read more of dick’s og nightwing run but ik dickbabs is a recurring thing and i strongly dislike what i’ve seen of it in modern comics (absolutely no offense to anyone who ships it!!)
also sort of related, but have dick and babs really been BFFs since grade school or is that new canon? i remember the initial new 52 run referencing him and babs as on and off but nothing about being childhood besties.
finally- what would you consider to be key dick grayson runs?
Surprisingly Dickbabs is pretty nice to read in other runs. I know this sounds weird coming from someone who hates Dickbabs as a ship but really it's only bad like 85% of the time and the majority of that is because of the Batgirl comics. Batgirl comics treat Dick like shit and it's a losing tossup whether he's treated well in Oracle related comics.
But to get to your point, Dickbabs in Nightwing (1996) was originally pretty good. Tom Taylor's run of Nightwing is the weird one because in every other run you have Dick + relationships whereas in Taylor's you have relationships + Dick. That being said, I highly, highly recommend reading the og one. At one point it does get toxic but Barbara leaves almost immediately after that and aside from that the ship was pretty nice for the most part.
Dick and Barbara have NOT been BFFS since childhood or whatever and this gets on my nerves that Tom Taylor and Hope Larson did that. This is one of the problems I have with the Dickbabs ship. Writers who write them love changing the story to erase Dick's friendships with the Titans. They literally love to pretend Wally, Donna, Roy, and Garth don't exist. BARBARA IS NOT HIS CHILDHOOD BEST FRIEND!! They literally keep deaging her and for what?? First she was like two decades older than him, then she's five years older than him, and now she's the same age?? Just let her be older! Barbara being the same age as Dick makes no sense because it takes away her maturity to turn her into this childish, selfish character she has no business being. She's not even enjoyable when she's deaged this far. I'm still on the she's 5 to 6 years older than Dick canon timeline and there is no way she was childhood besties with him.
The way I picture Dick and Barbara's relationship is this:
youtube
DC should've just let it at this, this was peak Dick and Barbara relationship.
Very narrow starting out list but some must read Dick Grayson runs are:
Nightwing (1996) - If you don't feel like reading anything else just read this
Nightwing (2016) - Really good up until Tom Taylor's run
Batman: Gotham Knights - pretty good and lots of cute Tim and Dick!
Titans (1999) - This is a must read if you're not interested in the original Teen Titans comics
Outsiders (2003) - Love him so much in this
JLA/Titans - Important for understanding his relationships with Titans and Batman
Nightwing (2011)
Justice League (2011) Issue #25 and Forever Evil - Same arc
Batman: Prelude to the Wedding: Nightwing vs. Hush
Robin era
Batman - One Bad Day: Mr. Freeze - If you want to skip the medal ages but still want to know what Dick was like as Robin, this comic is all you need to understand his character and personality and beliefs.
Batman Chronicles: The Gauntlet - Dick's gauntlet test!
Robin: Year One - For fun :)
Dick!Bats era
Batman: Battle for the Cowl - To get into Dick's batman
Batman (1940) Issues #682 to #713 - Batman Dick. Incredible. Dick was such a good batman and so fun to read.
Batman and Robin (2009) - Dick and Dami!
Batman: Streets of Gotham - Also Dick and Dami <3
Justice League of America (2006) Issues #41 to #60- Dick leading his own JLA team as Batman! SO FUN!!
Detective Comics (1937) Issue #864 to #881 - Honestly Batman Dick was so good I can't tell if I like Dick more as Nightwing or Batman. Obviously it's better for his mental health if he's nightwing but he just did such a great job as Batman.
Spy era
Grayson - YESSSS. Just everything about this.
Batman and Robin Eternal - It was really good up until near the end but then it got better again
Dark Crisis - Definitely, without a doubt, no question
Additional: The ones above are focused on him but if you finish reading this then Tim's Robin (1993) Comic is a fantastic one. He doesn't appear in every single issue but he appears a lot and it's a lot of Dick and Tim characterization. Also Teen Titans (2003) for more Dick and Titans relationships.

man what I hate about the fandom excusing the Dave blog with the n word like "it's not IN the comic so it's not canon" is that in THE comic, Hussie was way too obsessed with having Dave rap about segregation and slavery as quips one of the first raps even referenced the slur negro, which textually went over many people's heads (because "it's just "black" in French") when the context was racist white men in segregation-era and how they pronounced that very closely to the well-known slur, pronouncing it with "knee" these types of raps weren't just in Act 1, it was even in Act 3 it's so uncomfortable considering Hussie said "I just type out how I'd talk" when it came to Dave's dialogue, considering his humor and how those raps and the blog came into light it's so annoying how people keep suggesting it's not IN the comic at all- like it's giving "read it once 5 years ago and never freshened up on it while still debating it", y'know?
I'll give as many sources to what you said here as I can, just so people listen more. Wasn't able to track everything down, so some things are more up in the air, but overall, you're on the money.
[Blog of Dave Strider- February 17, 2010.]
I heavily agree and identify with your frustration. Just because it's "not in the comic" doesn't mean Hussie didn't write it and that it's not worth evaluating. This isn't a case where you can disregard it for noncanonicity reasons, like Post Canon. This was written concurrently with canon, and therefore it reflects the political mindset of Hussie during the time of writing Homestuck. That much is valuable information. What I will point out is that the next paragraph here contains yet another phrase that is rather telling of Hussie's... Racial vocabulary.
Definitely not the most comfortable thing in the world, to put it nicely. Haven't personally seen it get mentioned, and I feel like it's apt to bring up here, since this is the closest I've seen Hussie get to the big Hard R. Typically, they default to Soft A, which doesn't make it less racist, but does have a different... Vibe, so to speak. It's more hateful sounding.
Moving on.
[Andrew Hussie's Formspring- Feb 24, 2010 - Mar 7, 2010. Exact date unknown.]
The fact that Dave is a near exact emulation of Hussie themself in speech mannerisms, down to the lifting of entire chatlogs, is telling. As we've seen from Hussie's past work, he was clearly... excessively comfortable with throwing around the N-word, as a white man. Why would Dave be any different? It's hard to argue that Dave's racism is "not indicative of Dave's flaws, but indicative of Hussie's", when Dave as a character is both a product of Hussie's mind and a direct extension of her. You can't truly divorce the two. Dave is racist because Hussie is racist. Dave is an extension of Hussie.
[Homestuck, Act 2, page 294- June 23, 2009.]
I believe this is what you were talking about in reference to that particular version of the N-word being used, as well as the references to slavery. This is in Act 2. I couldn't find much in Dave's other raps, outside of his fixation on the idea of Black presidents as a novel concept... Other than this.
[Homestuck, Act 5 Act 2, page 2825- November 1, 2010.]
Apparently using the term "Urban" to refer to Black people, culture, art, and music is a recurring Hussie-ism, even in Homestuck. Rose also uses this a couple times, notably more than Dave does. It sees more usage in Problem Sleuth as well- unsurprising, considering it is an older work than Homestuck is.
[Homestuck, Act 4, page 1590- March 17, 2010.]
[Homestuck, [o], page 3879- July 2, 2011.]
[Problem Sleuth, page 62- March 15, 2008.]
TL;DR: I don't think there's any real excuse to leave Hussie's racism out of genuine discussion of the contents of his works. It's obvious. The only valid defense for leaving it out of analytical conversations is ignorance, because... Well, some people just aren't that observant. Homestuck does not exist in a vacuum. Hussie did, in fact, write this, and Hussie is, in fact, bigoted. Bigotry shows throughout their works not because they're spinning a grand narrative of overcoming your moral failings, but because they kind of just suck. Dave isn't an exception, and shouldn't be divorced from the context of having been written by Andrew Hussie. There's no debate to be had over the existence of Hussie's bigotry, because contesting such a clear cut fact is pure stupidity. It's like arguing that evolution isn't real because you, personally, do not understand it, or don't find it comforting. Hussie's bigotry is one of the only things we can be 100% sure is a real part of his personhood, rather than another figment of his ironic online persona. The level of "Well, Actually"-ism people will engage in over this is mind-numbing, quite frankly.
Thank you for the ask- people being aware of the racism in Homestuck keep me sane. Have a lovely day.

Weekend Top Ten #626
Top Ten Arctic Monkey Songs
This is a list I’ve been planning for ages and ages. Originally it was going to go up around the time I saw the band live last year; I can’t remember now why I postponed it. But – long way round – here we are at last.
Anyway, I like this band. I vividly remember the first time I heard them. As I’ve said a million times on this blog, I’m not much of a muso; I don’t follow “the scene”, I don’t pay much attention at all to music unless I like it. So I come to stuff very late, I don’t know what’s from what album, I’ve got very little knowledge of a lot of music history, that sort of thing. So when I first heard I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor played one day on Radio 1 as I was walking around Birmingham, on some errand for the BBC’s daytime show Mind Your Own Business, I assumed it was an older track; maybe something from The Clash that I was supposed to already have heard a million times in my youth. But no. It was new.
It was stunning. I’d never heard anything like that – not a new song, not recently. It was vibrant and full of life, and it was fun, and it was funny, and it was fast and loud. There wasn’t really a lot of stuff like it back then; we were still in the post-Britpop doldrums, the Pop Idol-era of ballads and fluff, where guitar bands seemed to be unpopular. At least, that’s what it seemed like to me; as I said, I just sort of bump up against music accidentally until it gets its hooks into me.
Ever since then I’ve loved them. If maybe in recent years they’ve settled into a sort of rhythm of often-weird concept albums and more melancholy work, they still kick out a fair few bangers every album. They are, I think, the only band I’ve ever seen live more than once – like I said, I don’t really “do” music, I “do” in-depth analyses of what the “S” on Superman’s suit looks like (not that those things are mutually exclusive, of course). But it’s been fascinating watching them grow and evolve, not just musically but culturally, as they become megastars. They’re part of the firmament now; veteran British rockers. My kids will probably look at them the way I look at the Rolling Stones, or something. Crazy.
Anyway, here are my favourites of their songs. I make no apologies for most of these coming from their earlier albums; like I said, I think as they’ve gone a bit slower and more melancholically-introspective, even if I’ve appreciated their stuff, it hasn’t quite got its hooks into me the way their early work did. Also, y’know, I’m not 24 anymore, absorbing this stuff with a fresh sense of a world undiscovered.
So there you go.
I’m going to eschew my usual individual dissection this week; I like writing about the things in my list, but here I feel it hard to parse the differences between the songs for some reason. So instead I say, let’s just enjoy them all; a little smorgasbord of northern musical delights. Suck it and see, and all that.
I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor (2005)
Cornerstone (2009)
When the Sun Goes Down (2006)
Fluorescent Adolescent (2007)
A Certain Romance (2006)
505 (2007)
Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair (2011)
Suck It and See (2011)
Brick by Brick (2011)
Mardy Bum (2006)
Fluorescent Adolescent is the best video though, we can all agree on that, right?

Doctor Who 10 for 10 Part 5/10: Series 5
And so we come to my era of Doctor Who, and I say “my” for different reasons. I first got into Doctor Who with the Matt Smith era around 2011 or 2012, watching the episodes on ABC iView then gradually branching back to the older episodes of the modern era, even watching a few from the classic era. It was also around this time that I started integrating Doctor Who into my personal project, realising it by essentially making my own version of the series. At first, I just put out ideas for episodes without writing them, then I started writing some episodes; some were adaptations or ripoffs of other episodes or media and some were original, with a lot of collaborations, throwbacks and crazy ideas to boot. Gradually, it came to the point where I was essentially compelled to write whole series of episodes and the rabbit hole just continued from there.
But that’s not what this series is about. I’ll think about elaborating on my personal project in the Kisekae Insights series, but for now, let’s jump into the retrospective for Series 5.
1. Changes
When RTD and David Tennant announced their departures from the series, Steven Moffat seemingly had his work cut out for him as he essentially had to start on a fresh slate, however fans were confident that the show was in safe hands, given how he had written episodes for each of the RTD era series. Additionally, before the revival of the series in 2005, Steven Moffat wrote a non-canonical(?) episode known as The Curse of Fatal Death, broadcast in segments during Red Nose Day in 1999.
Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor was revealed to the public in a special episode of Doctor Who Confidential on 3 January 2009, having been cast for at least 3 months by that point. This was a year before the Tenth Doctor’s regeneration aired on New Year’s Day 2010. The special episode of Confidential was commissioned three weeks before it was due to air, so the team only had a few days to work on it. Series 5 began filming in July 2009 and the series premiered in April 2010.
Doctor Who had only switched to HD with the production of the 2009 Specials; the RTD era didn’t start filming in HD presumably because it hadn’t taken off in the UK at the time. Torchwood was filmed in HD and RTD apparently had a bad time with it because there was a lack of training; also, the TARDIS would have to be rebuilt and it would have taken a lot of money and time, hence RTD held off on moving the series to HD until towards the end of his run. HD episodes of Doctor Who were simulcast on BBC HD during the 2009 Specials and Series 5 before moving to the newly-launched BBC One HD from the 2010 Christmas Special onwards.
With the change in production team also came more radical changes to the series, including the sonic screwdriver, the TARDIS, the logo, the title sequence and the theme music. The theme music was made faster and “a bit reckless” according to composer Murray Gold, which apparently received complaints from viewers. Personally, it’s a theme that’s stuck in my memories and it sounds a bit subdued compared to the 2008 theme.
2. The Girl Who Waited
Karen Gillan was cast as the Doctor’s companion, Amy Pond, however her backstory would be more complicated compared to previous companions and her involvement would not end at the conclusion of the series. Arthur Darvill was cast as Amy’s boyfriend and later, husband, Rory Williams, however he would not be credited in the opening credits until Series 6.
In The Eleventh Hour, a young Amelia Pond was praying to Santa Claus about the crack in her bedroom wall when the newly-regenerated Doctor crashed in her backyard. After climbing out of the swimming pool in the library and having something to eat (fish fingers and custard), the Doctor investigates the crack in Amelia’s room, he learns that someone called Prisoner Zero has escaped, but just as he suspects something suspicious in the corridor, out the corner of his eye, the TARDIS Cloister Bell rings as the engines are phasing out of existence.
The Doctor attempted to shift forward five minutes in time, but as he would later learn, he had gone forward twelve years in time and Amelia now called herself Amy. She began to believe in “the Raggedy Doctor”, with everyone in Leadworth believing that it was a thing. Amy was sent to four psychiatrists, which she apparently kept biting because they said that “the Raggedy Doctor” wasn’t real. The Atraxi, who were guarding Prisoner Zero and were on the hunt for him, followed the Doctor to twelve years in the future and were prepared to incinerate the planet if Prisoner Zero did not surrender itself to them. Without his TARDIS and his sonic screwdriver, the Doctor managed to corner Prisoner Zero and even trick it into showing its true form, allowing the Atraxi to recapture it.
Although the Atraxi had achieved their objective, the Doctor tracked them down and called them back for a talking-to, during which he decided to change out of his raggedy clothes and put on a new outfit, including a bowtie, which would be the signature element of the Eleventh Doctor’s outfit and one of a few things that he would find “cool”. After the Doctor gave the Atraxi a badass speech to introduce himself and tell them to run, the TARDIS had finished rebuilding itself and the Doctor flew away to the moon before coming back, accidentally arriving two years later. He invited Amy to travel with him in the TARDIS and thus, she officially became the Doctor’s new companion.
The Eleventh Hour is a powerful and fast-paced introduction to the Moffat era that introduces new elements to the series while still maintaining the spirit of what came before. During the RTD era, images of the previous Doctors were shown in Human Nature and The Next Doctor; this episode not only features images of previous Doctors, but also some monsters from the RTD era with even some from the classic era. As we get closer to the 50th Anniversary, I feel like the Moffat era included more throwbacks to older episodes in preparation for the special occasion.
3. The New Dalek Paradigm
Victory of the Daleks saw the return of the Daleks in the Moffat era, with the last surviving Daleks from Davros’ Dalek Empire making way for the New Dalek Paradigm during World War II. After the episode premiered, the design of the New Dalek Paradigm was not well-received by fans, with criticisms such as the extended back making them hunched and the colour-codedness making them parodies of the Power Rangers. The New Dalek Paradigm would be slowly phased out after Series 5, with Asylum of the Daleks reintroducing the bronze Daleks of the RTD era, making them the soldiers while the Paradigm would be an officer class. By The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar, the New Paradigm Daleks were pretty much phased out and kept with the Peter Cushing era Daleks, which is honestly quite sad.
Unpopular opinion, but I didn’t think the New Dalek Paradigm was that bad and I thought that a lot of potential was squandered with the way they were phased out. In my personal project, I had a little subplot at one stage featuring a civil war between the bronze Daleks and the New Dalek Paradigm, so I feel like if we actually had that in the series, they could truly “exterminate” the New Dalek Paradigm, as it were, and provide an in-universe explanation for them being phased out. But sadly, that has seemingly been relegated to the extended media. Personally, if the backs weren’t extended or the heads were made bigger so as to not look hunched, I think the New Dalek Paradigm may have had a bit of a chance.
4. Angels vs. Time
The Weeping Angels were a Moffat creation introduced during the RTD era in Series 3’s Blink, so Moffat becoming the new showrunner allowed the opportunity for a monster he created to truly shine. In The Time of Angels and Flesh and Stone, a Weeping Angel had sabotaged the Byzantium and crashed it into Alfava Metraxis, where hundreds of Weeping Angels were laying dormant in the moratorium of the Aplans, using the radiation of the Byzantium to revive themselves. Joined by River and soldiers from what would later be known as the Church of the Papal Mainframe, the Doctor managed to board the Byzantium, only to discover that a crack, similar to the one in young Amelia’s room, has opened onboard. This particular crack, however, was leaking time energy that would erase from history anyone or anything it came into contact with. On top of this, Amy had looked into the eyes of an image of a Weeping Angel and an Angel was created in her mind, which began making her count down as the Angel slowly started to take over, but the Doctor made Amy close her eyes, which held off the Angel for the time being.
While the Doctor and River headed to the primary flight deck, Amy remained in the ship’s forest with the Clerics. As the Clerics were being erased from history one by one, the Doctor realised what the time energy was capable of and tried getting her to the primary flight deck. The Angels managed to close in on Amy during this, but River managed to teleport her to the primary flight deck. Because the Angels were absorbing the energy from the Byzantium, the gravity controls began to fail, so the Doctor had River and Amy hold on as the Angels fell into the crack, erasing them from history and the Angel in Amy’s mind with them.
This two-parter reveals more abilities of the Weeping Angels than from what we learnt in Blink; an image of an Angel is in itself an Angel, an Angel can be created in someone’s mind by staring into its eyes and Angels can snap people’s necks and steal their consciousness to communicate with others. Some people say that this is where the Weeping Angels become overpowered, but I didn’t really think so as I watched the series, probably because I wasn’t really involved in the discourse back then.
5. A new extension to the universe
It was during Series 5 that Doctor Who made its foray into video games. Well, there was the Top Trumps game released in 2008, but there were more PC and console games released during the Matt Smith era before Doctor Who returned to the medium during the Jodie Whittaker era.
From June to December 2010, four games were released under The Adventure Games banner through the BBC Doctor Who website. A second series of four games was commissioned for release in 2011, but only the first game, The Gunpowder Plot, was released before the rest of the series was cancelled as the BBC wanted to focus on console games such as The Eternity Clock, which was released in 2012. The Eternity Clock was planned to be the first of a three-parter of games, but the other two parts were cancelled.
The Adventure Games were only made available to residents of the UK thanks to a geo-blocking system that was embedded into the installer that communicated to a BBC server before it was shut down. The games were made available on Steam in 2014, but they were removed in 2017 as the licence of the publisher, Legacy Games, was expiring. The BBC downloadables were made available on the Internet Archive; there is a way to get past the geo-blocking system by unpacking the installers and modifying a byte in a specific position of the executable file using a hex editor.
Evacuation Earth and Return to Earth were also games that were released for the Nintendo DS and Wii respectively in 2010. They received negative reviews. The Mazes of Time for iOS and Android along with Worlds in Time, a Flash MMORPG, were also made, but they were eventually discontinued.
Finally, one Doctor Who game that I fondly remember is Legacy, which was released on iOS and Android in November 2013 for the 50th Anniversary. It was a Puzzle & Dragons-style game where you collect characters and match gems to attack enemies. The game was updated regularly during the Peter Capaldi era and it also contained content from the Big Finish audios and Titan Comics releases. Another similar game, Infinity, was released in 2018 and actors from the series reprised their roles for it, however both games were ultimately discontinued due to expiring licences with the publisher, Tiny Rebel Games.
6. Apes and lizards
After Series 3’s 42 and the first two series of Torchwood, The Hungry Earth and Cold Blood was Chris Chibnall’s contribution to Series 5. The two-parter marked the return of the Silurians, a lesser-known monster that had only appeared in two stories during the classic series. The new Silurians were of a different caste to the old ones, particularly as the former used prosthetics (under masks) instead of suits to make them more humanoid. Neve McIntosh, who played Alaya and Restac in the two-parter, became the series’ resident Silurian actress, just as Dan Starkey became the resident Sontaran actor. McIntosh would play Vastra and Starkey would play Strax from Series 6 onwards.
Rory joined the Doctor and Amy following the events of Flesh and Stone, picking him up after Amy tried to kiss him in an effort to keep her and Rory together. The TARDIS arrives in 2020 Cwmtaff instead of Rio de Janeiro, where after Amy and Rory briefly wave at their future selves, the Doctor notices something strange in the grass and eventually discovers an entire city of Silurians underground. Amidst a growing crisis between the humans and Silurians, the Silurian leader, Eldane, decided to have his kind go back into stasis while the Doctor and the humans escaped back up.
Just as the Doctor, Amy and Rory reach the TARDIS, they notice a crack in time opening and the Doctor reaches in to pull a piece of shrapnel out. A dying Restac finds the Doctor and shoots at him, but Rory takes the shot for him and he dies. The Doctor notices time energy coming into contact with Rory and drags Amy back into the TARDIS, leaving Rory to be removed from history. Due to him being tied to her personal history, Amy ends up forgetting Rory and she waves goodbye to her future self, now without Rory.
Before the Doctor leaves, he examines the piece of shrapnel he pulled out and discovers that it is a part of the TARDIS.
7. Future legacy
Vincent and the Doctor is another powerful episode in Series 5, but in a different way to how The Eleventh Hour was powerful. In Victory of the Daleks, we met Winston Churchill and in this story, we meet Vincent Van Gogh, a painter who was ridiculed in his time but revered years after. His mental health is also the focus of the episode, which was a given how Van Gogh was in history.
The Doctor and Amy visit the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, but they decide to head back in time to 1890 when the Doctor finds something strange in one of Van Gogh’s paintings. They eventually find a monster known as the Krafayis, invisible to others but visible to Van Gogh. While confronting the monster, the Doctor realised that it was abandoned by the rest of its pack because it was blind. It was accidentally killed by Van Gogh, who told the Doctor that it was scared.
Following this, the Doctor and Amy took Van Gogh to the Musée d’Orsay in 2010, where he heard Doctor Black talking about him as the greatest man who ever lived. This moved Van Gogh to tears and left him with a new outlook on life, but despite this, he still committed suicide, showing that despite best efforts, some moments of history are fixed. However, the Krafayis no longer appears in Van Gogh’s painting and he dedicated another one of his paintings to Amy.
One of the things that made the ending of the episode so powerful was the song used in it - Chances by Athlete, an indie rock band that Matt Smith was a fan of. Another song I know from Doctor Who is Angels Calling by Rooster, which was used in the Doctor Who Greatest Moments documentary series. Both songs are quite powerful in and of themselves.
Doctor Black was played by Bill Nighy, a high-profile actor who was cast because the producers wanted the audience to listen to him talking about Van Gogh. Nighy agreed to appear on the condition that he was uncredited, no publicity photos were taken of him and no interviews were to be given.
8. They made him famous
Since the previous year’s Christmas Special was already produced by the RTD-era crew and the current year’s Christmas Special would be filmed as part of the next series, there was no need to double-bank an episode, though Moffat did consider it if delays happened in the production schedule. When budget issues forced Neil Gaiman’s The Doctor’s Wife to be moved to the next series, Gareth Roberts’ The Lodger was chosen to take its place, being a cheap enough candidate for a companion-lite bottle episode. It was originally pitched as a comic strip where the Tenth Doctor was forced to live with Mickey when the TARDIS accidentally jumped forward in time with Rose in it, so the characters and setting had to be changed to fit Series 5. When it was clear the double-banking would not be required, some more material with Amy was added, making the companion-lite episode a companion-different episode.
The Lodger featured Craig Owens, played by guest star James Corden, who would be more known in the US as the host of The Late Late Show. When a rogue timeship caused the TARDIS to go in a materialisation loop without the Doctor in it, the Doctor was guided to Craig’s flat and rented a room there in order to investigate. The timeship lured in humans who wanted to escape or explore, but they ended up being burnt due to them not being compatible. When Craig’s other flatmate, Sophie, was lured into the timeship, the Doctor and Craig went up to save her, but the ship’s autopilot deemed the Doctor compatible despite him being too much for it. Craig was never lured in because he never had a desire to leave out of his unspoken love for Sophie, so when he willingly touched the panel, he caused the ship to shut down and implode. The TARDIS stabilised itself and the Doctor was able to leave, but not before having Amy leave a note for his past self about the flat.
The Lodger shows off the Doctor’s more alien side and how it affects his interactions with other humans, particularly when Craig tries to kick the Doctor out because the former felt that the latter was stealing his thunder. It’s a nice and down-to-earth episode. Gareth Roberts originally intended to bring Meglos back from the classic series, but decided not to when the Vinvocci appeared in The End of Time.
9. Cracks in time, time, time
In case you haven’t realised it by now, the cracks in time are the main story arc of Series 5. “Silence will fall” is also a saying that was coined in this series and would be the focus of the next one. The Pandorica was also mentioned in two episodes of this series, but it would be fully addressed in the series finale, The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang.
Before Van Gogh died, he drew something that a woman noted was worse than his usual work. The painting made its way to Winston Churchill and he attempted to call the Doctor, but the call got redirected to River in Stormcage. River broke out and went to steal Van Gogh’s painting from the Royal Collection; after acquiring a vortex manipulator from Dorium Maldovar, River met the Doctor and Amy in 102 AD Britain. The painting is revealed to be the TARDIS exploding and titled “The Pandorica Opens”. Following the coordinates on the painting, the three arrive at Stonehenge, where they discover the Pandorica underground and beginning to open.
As the Pandorica opened, Stonehenge began transmitting signals through time and space, summoning numerous alien races to it. While River summons Roman soldiers for help, the Doctor and Amy are pursued by a broken Cyberman before the Roman soldiers arrive, a resurrected Rory with them. The Doctor tells River to bring the TARDIS to him, but she is brought to Amy’s house on 26 June 2010, where she discovers that aliens have been there and that the Roman soldiers were all part of a book that Amy had. The Doctor tells River to get away, but she discovers that something else is controlling the TARDIS. The Roman soldiers, revealed to be Autons, capture the Doctor and place him in the Pandorica with all the other aliens in witness. Outside, Rory’s Auton programming activates and he inadvertently shoots Amy dead. The TARDIS explodes and every star is erased from the universe.
Rory is sulking over the loss of Amy when the Doctor arrives from the future, giving him his sonic screwdriver and telling him to get his past self out of the Pandorica. Once he does so, the Doctor puts Amy in his place and prepares to head to 1996 using River’s vortex manipulator, but Rory decides to stay and guard Amy.
The Doctor arrives at the National Museum in 1996 to find Amy and her younger self, Amelia, being pursued by a Dalek that had been revived from the light of the Pandorica. Rory arrives and manages to blind the Dalek before finally reuniting with Amy. As the four of them hide from the recovering Dalek, the Doctor sets up the events that freed himself in the past and brought Amelia to the National Museum in the present. Upon encountering another version of himself from the future, the Doctor realises that he only has 12 minutes to live. He heads outside and discovers that the sun is actually his exploding TARDIS, leading him to save River from it. Eventually, the Dalek catches up with the Doctor and shoots him, which leads him to escape to 12 minutes prior. Amy, Rory and River discover the Doctor working in the Pandorica; because it contained atoms from the previous universe, it could be used to extract the entire universe from it. With the TARDIS exploding at every point in history, flying the Pandorica into it would restore the entire universe. However, the Doctor would end up trapped on the other side of the cracks, resulting in him being erased from history. Before setting off, the Doctor tells Amy that the crack in her bedroom was pouring the entire universe into her head, so if she remembers her family when she wakes up, she could bring her family back. The Doctor follows his plan to restart the universe and finds himself going backwards through his own timeline, saying goodbye to Amelia before skipping the rest of the rewind.
Amy wakes up on the morning of her wedding day with her parents and Rory restored. Amy senses that there is something missing until River’s diary leads her to remember the Doctor, who arrives for her wedding reception. After the dancing, River leaves and so do the Doctor, Amy and Rory in the TARDIS.
The Series 5 finale was pretty good. It resolves one story arc and leaves another to be addressed in the next series, though I must admit that given what we see, the payoff doesn’t feel as good. How the TARDIS exploded isn’t really elaborated into, but I think they felt that it wasn’t an important thing to focus on.
10. A Christmas Carol
The 2010 Christmas Special, A Christmas Carol, was produced and released as part of Series 6, just as previous Christmas Specials (with the exception of The End of Time) were produced as part of the following series. However, for the Moffat era, I honestly think that the Christmas Specials should have been considered a part of the series that broadcast this year (Series 5 being 2010) so that every series has a Christmas Special. This will become more apparent in Series 7, 9 and 10 because those series have more than one Christmas Special on their DVDs and Blu-rays whereas Series 5 and 8 don’t have one.
In this special, Amy and Rory are on a starliner trapped in a cloud belt and potentially about to crash. Amy calls the Doctor for help as Kazran Sardick refuses to allow the starliner to land. As a result, the Doctor decides to influence Sardick by changing his past, becoming the Ghost of Christmas Past. He even unfroze Abigail Pettigrew and had adventures with her and the young Sardick every year on Christmas Eve. At some point, Abigail told Sardick about her illness and Sardick decided to end his travels with the Doctor. As a result, Sardick still grew up to become the same man he was when he met the Doctor, albeit changed from heartless to heartbroken, reluctant to choose what day would be his last with Abigail.
Acting as the Ghost of Christmas Present, Amy visited Sardick and showed him the situation on the starship. When Sardick still refused to let the starliner land, the Doctor returned to Sardick, acting as the Ghost of Christmas Future to show his younger self if he wanted to become like his father. Sardick’s refusal to strike his younger self finally convinced him to open the cloud belt, but when he tried to do so, they wouldn’t work because the Doctor had changed Sardick too much to the point where the isomorphic controls wouldn’t recognise him anymore.
Sardick, however, had kept a half of the sonic screwdriver, the other half which had been eaten by a sky shark. The Doctor gets the idea to set up a resonation pattern between the two halves, but the only thing that they know works is Abigail’s singing since it resonates with the cloud belt. As the starliner is successfully able to land, it begins to snow in the town and the Doctor takes the younger Sardick back to his time before rejoining with Amy and Rory.
A Christmas Carol is the first time since The Christmas Invasion where the current companions were involved in the story (due to the Moffat era not following the RTD era’s single-series companion formula), however the formatting of it makes it a bit companion-lite like The Lodger. It’s a unique take on the Charles Dickens classic, with the setting maintaining the feel of the Victorian era despite it being set in the distant future.
Series 5 of Doctor Who has got to be the best series for me, if I may say. Steven Moffat traded the deeper character development and domestic relationships for deeper plotlines, something which has admittedly influenced my personal project. The chaoticness of the Eleventh Doctor really appealed to me particularly a decade ago when I was more of a guarded lone wolf at high school and I suppose his character did rub off on me a bit as I hung out in my own little world.
The Matt Smith era started during a time when I wasn’t even invested in Doctor Who, but as the era went on, my fascination turned into an investment and my investment turned into an obsession. Stay tuned for Part 6 as I give my 10 takes on Series 6.

ok I dug up as many random old Sonic drawings as I could find just to show how many times I royally fucked these guys up when I was younger, and some of these are REALLY funny. how did Shadow somehow get LESS correct-looking as I got older?? did my memory just get corrupted somehow?? what are those SHOES?? references are your friend, remember this
these ones above are all from like 2009-2010, which is wild to me because I started HIGHSCHOOL in 2011 and most of my art was starting to actually look decent around then, and yet these look significantly rougher than any of my other art at that point lol
and then there's THESE:
...which were drawn during the first half of my time overseas, which means still no references on hand, but I was ALSO an adult at this point. the shapes are a bit better, there's a bit more confidence in the stylization, you can tell I had actually played more than like 3 Sonic games by then, but there's still a distinct wonkyness that continued to mostly keep me away from seriously attempting to draw more Sonic characters, right up until the past couple of years when I started trying a little harder to actually learn. it's tricky! they're weird! I still struggle! but we live and learn nonetheless
(I probably could've found even older stuff, from the pre-GameCube era when my ONLY experience with Sonic characters was playing Sonic 2 on my cousins' Genesis, my uncle's issue of the first Archie comic where Metal Sonic showed up, and like 1 episode of Underground. despite my limited knowledge of basically anything about him, I still thought Sonic was the coolest and owned a plushie of him. there are definitely older drawings I couldn't find that ALL feature him wearing the little guitar pendant from Underground because my plushie had one and I just assumed Sonic was always a necklace kinda guy)
seeing your fursona in sonic style really puts into perspective how strange sonic looks if you don’t Get It, like an outsider. not an actual insect but definitely like a weird bug
absolutely. I have spent most of my life, like literally ever since I was a kid, occasionally seeing Sonic somewhere and going "oh he's so cool I should try drawing him" and then getting wildly frustrated at how wonky he looks and how little I understand how his shapes and proportions actually work. mobian characters skirt a very fine line between uncanny and stylish, and even now I feel like I only barely understand how to replicate their look without directly drawing over a reference image to get it right. I've gotten a lot closer in the past year or so but it's still a little more daunting than most other subjects would be lol
#buny text#sonic#I'm not going to put my art tag on this cuz i don't really think my scuffed 8th grade sketches belong in there lol#but yeah these sure are. something.#imagine how much faster i could've learned to draw this dude if I'd just looked up pictures and copied them a couple times#like i did with link and various pokemon#seriously if you take any lesson away from this it should be that you gotta practice drawing from reference. it's THE fastest way to learn#your memory is never as good as you think it is and you won't usually learn anything new from relying on it

‘A New Era’: Germany Quits Nuclear Power, Closing Its Final Three Plants
— By Laura Paddison, Nadine Schmidt and Inke Kappeler | Saturday April 15, 2023
Germany’s final three nuclear power plants close their doors on Saturday, marking the end of the country’s nuclear era that has spanned more than six decades.
Nuclear power has long been contentious in Germany.
There are those who want to end reliance on a technology they view as unsustainable, dangerous and a distraction from speeding up renewable energy.
But for others, closing down nuclear plants is short-sighted. They see it as turning off the tap on a reliable source of low-carbon energy at a time when drastic cuts to planet-heating pollution are needed.
Even as these debates rumble on, and despite last-minute calls to keep the plants online amid an energy crisis, the German government has been steadfast.
“The position of the German government is clear: nuclear power is not green. Nor is it sustainable,” Steffi Lemke, Germany’s Federal Minister for the Environment and Consumer Protection and a Green Party member, told CNN.
“We are embarking on a new era of energy production,” she said.
A Plan Decades in the Making
The closure of the three plants – Emsland, Isar 2 and Neckarwestheim – represents the culmination of a plan set in motion more than 20 years ago. But its roots are even older.
In the 1970s, a strong anti-nuclear movement in Germany emerged. Disparate groups came together to protest new power plants, concerned about the risks posed by the technology and, for some, the link to nuclear weapons. The movement gave birth to the Green Party, which is now part of the governing coalition.
Nuclear accidents fueled the opposition: The partial meltdown of the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania in 1979 and the 1986 catastrophe at Chernobyl that created a cloud of radioactive waste which reached parts of Germany.

In 2000, the German government pledged to phase out nuclear power and start shutting down plants. But when a new government came to power in 2009, it seemed – briefly – as if nuclear would get a reprieve as a bridging technology to help the country move to renewable energy.
Then Fukushima Happened.
In March 2011, an earthquake and tsunami caused three reactors of the Fukushima Daiichi power plant to melt down. For many in Germany, Japan’s worst nuclear disaster was confirmation “that assurances that a nuclear accident of a large scale can’t happen are not credible,” Miranda Schreurs, professor of environment and climate policy at the Technical University of Munich, told CNN.
Three days later then-Chancellor Angela Merkel – a physicist who was previously pro-nuclear – made a speech called it an “inconceivable catastrophe for Japan” and a “turning point” for the world. She announced Germany would accelerate a nuclear phase-out, with older plants shuttered immediately.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, however, provided another plot twist.
Fearful of its energy security without Russian gas, the German government delayed its plan to close the final three plants in December 2022. Some urged a rethink.
But the government declined, agreeing to keep them running only until April 15, 2023.
For those in the anti-nuclear movement, it’s a moment of victory.
“It is a great achievement for millions of people who have been protesting nuclear in Germany and worldwide for decades,” Paul-Marie Manière, a spokesperson for Greenpeace, told CNN.
A Polarizing Energy
For critics of Germany’s policy, however, it’s irrational to turn off a low-carbon source of energy as the impacts of the climate crisis intensify.
“We need to keep existing, safe nuclear reactors operating while simultaneously ramping up renewables as fast as possible,” Leah Stokes, a professor of climate and energy policy at the University of California, Santa Barbara, told CNN.
The big risk, she said, is that fossil fuels fill the energy gap left by nuclear. Reductions in Germany’s nuclear energy since Fukushima have been primarily offset by increases in coal, according to research published last year.
Germany plans to replace the roughly 6% of electricity generated by the three nuclear plants with renewables, but also gas and coal.
More than 30% of Germany’s energy comes from coal, the dirtiest of the fossil fuels – and the government has made controversial decisions to turn to coal to help with energy security.
In January, protestors including Greta Thunberg converged on the west German village of Lützerath in an unsuccessful attempt to stop it being demolished to mine the coal underneath it.
“Building new coal capacity is the opposite of what we need,” said Stokes. Fossil fuels are a climate problem, but they’re also a health risk, she pointed out. Air pollution from fossil fuels is responsible for 8.7 million deaths a year, according to a recent analysis.
Veronika Grimm, one of Germany’s leading economists, told CNN that keeping nuclear power plants running for longer would have allowed Germany more time “to electrify extensively,” especially as renewable energy growth “remains sluggish.”

But supporters of the nuclear shutdown argue it will ultimately hasten the end of fossil fuels.
Germany has pledged to close its last coal-fired power station no later than 2038, with a 2030 deadline in some areas. It’s aiming for 80% of electricity to come from renewables by the end of this decade.
While more coal was added in the months following Fukushima, Schreurs said, nuclear shutdowns have seen a big push on clean energy. “That urgency and demand can be what it takes to push forward on the growth of renewables,” she said.
Representatives for Germany’s renewable energy industry said the shutdown will open the door for more investment into clean energy.
“Germany’s phase-out of nuclear power is a historic event and an overdue step in energy terms,” Simone Peter, president of the German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE), told CNN. “It is high time that we leave the nuclear age behind and consistently organize the renewable age.”
The impacts of nuclear power shouldn’t be overlooked either, Schreurs said, pointing to the carbon pollution created by uranium mining as well as the risk of health complications for miners. Plus, it creates a dependency on Russia, which supplies uranium for nuclear plants, she added.
Nuclear has also shown itself to have vulnerabilities to the climate crisis. France was forced to reduce nuclear power generation last year as the rivers used to cool reactors became too hot during Europe’s blistering heatwave.
A Million-Year Problem

Now Germany must work out what do with the deadly, high-level radioactive waste, which can remain dangerous for hundreds of thousands of years.
Currently, the nuclear waste is kept in interim storage next to the nuclear plants being decommissioned. But the search is on to find a permanent location where the waste can be stored safely for a million years.
The site needs to be deep – hundreds of meters underground. Only certain types of rock will do: Crystalline granite, rock salt or clay rock. It must be geologically stable with no risks of earthquakes or signs of underground rivers.
The process is likely to be fraught, complex and breathtakingly long – potentially lasting more than 100 years.
BGE, the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal, estimates a final site won’t be chosen until between 2046 and 2064. After that, it will take decades more to build the repository, fill it with the waste and seal it.
What Are Other Countries Doing?
Plenty of other countries are treading paths similar to Germany’s. Denmark passed a resolution in the 1980s not to construct nuclear power plants, Switzerland voted in 2017 to phase out nuclear power, Italy closed its last reactors in 1990 and Austria’s one nuclear plant has never been used.
But, in the context of the war in Ukraine, soaring energy prices and pressure to reduce carbon pollution, others still want nuclear in the mix.
The UK, in the process of building a nuclear power plant, said in its recent climate strategy that energy nuclear power has a “crucial” role in “creating secure, affordable and clean energy.”
France, which gets about 70% of its power from nuclear, is planning six new reactors, and Finland opened a new nuclear plant last year. Even Japan, still dealing with the aftermath of Fukushima, is considering restarting reactors.

The US, the world’s biggest nuclear power, is also investing in nuclear energy and, in March, started up a new nuclear reactor, Vogtle 3 in Georgia – the first in years.
But experts suggest this doesn’t mark the start of a nuclear ramp up. Vogtle 3 came online six years late and at a cost of $30 billion, twice the initial budget.
It encapsulates the big problem that afflicts the whole nuclear industry: making the economics add up. New plants are expensive and can take more than a decade to build. “Even the countries that are talking pro-nuclear are having big trouble developing nuclear power,” Schreurs said.
Many nuclear power plants in Europe, the US and elsewhere are aging – plants have an operating life of around 40 to 60 years. As Germany puts an end to its nuclear era, it’s coming up to crunch time for others, Schreurs said.
“There will be a moment of decision as to whether nuclear really has a future”
— CNN’s Chris Stern contributed reporting.

hi! I really like your blog, thank you for sharing! also I don't really read/like comics all the much but I love the characters (esp Clark) and have been intrigued lately, so I was wondering if you could please rec me The Essential and also your favorite superman and superbat ones?
Hi, thank you kind anon! It's great that you want to get into comics! I think it's a medium for everyone and even if you don't like the superman and superbat comics I'll recommend you, there's so much more out there that doesn't necessarily have to be superheroes even. There are just so many genres!
Anyway, for your superbat needs I have the Superbat reading guide. If you just want the essentials I would say stick to the ones with a star. And consider starting somewhere in a more modern era (such as the post-crisis, new 52, or current comics), because the older ones can be a bit harder to read at times.
As for Superman, I have a lot of recommendations (you've really opened a can of worms here, anon).
Easy to start with:
Adventures of Superman (2013) - This was a digital first series during new 52 but not set in any specific continuity, making it very accessible to new readers. It's what got me into Superman at the time.
Superman Red & Blue (2021) - Anthology series from last year. Just as accessible as Adventures of Superman.
Superman: Up in the Sky (2019) - Also highly recommended for getting into the character. A lot of different short adventures all part of one immense mission to save one little girl.
The best:
All-Star Superman (2011) - It's often said that you should not read this as your first Superman comic, but it was my first. Loved it then, and I love it even more with every re-read. Every page is a masterpiece, every panel an iconic Superman panel. Yes, I will continue to praise this book until the day I die. Don't spoil yourself by watching the movie first, read the book and then give the movie a try.
Origin stories:
Superman: For all seasons (1998) - A little shorter than All-Star, and a good introduction in my opinion. Clark growing up in Smallville and moving to Metropolis. Tim Sale's art is beautiful as well. If you like this, I also highly recommend Superman: Kryptonite by Darwyn Cooke and Tim Sale, in which Clark discovers he can actually get hurt.
Superman: Birthright (2003) - I love this version of the origin story! Some absolutely iconic Superman moments in here, and Martha is an alien/extraterrestial geek, she even has her own website. (Don't worry, the Kents are still farmers in Smallville, Martha just has an interesting hobby).
Superman: Secret Origin (2009) - Maybe the most well-known origin story for Clark. I don't like it as much as the other ones but it's definitely essential reading.
Other essentials and highly recommended:
Action Comics #775 - This is rightfully a very often quoted Superman comic. It's Superman vs. The Elite, and the question of why doesn't Superman just kill his enemies? as well as what happens if superheroes do.
Action Comics by Grant Morrison (Action Comics vol. 2 #0-18) - This is new 52, I personally haven't read it yet, but I often see it recommended for getting into superman. Also considered an updated version of his origin / golden-age superman. I have to get around to reading it soon!
current Action Comics - The warworld story that started in issue 1030 has been really great so far. I think the writer really understands what Superman stands for and I look forward to the new issue every month.
Whatever happened to the Man of Tomorrow? - A classic. Officially pre-crisis, but it was the last issue before the big reset of DC comics in 1986. Tells the story of Clark's final adventure and what happens after.
Pre-crisis (my personal fave):
Superman: The secret years (Clark in College)
Superman #296-299 (Should Clark be Superman permanently or Clark Kent permanently?)
Superman #366-368 (Superman revenge squad)
Superman #400 (Miracle Monday comes from this anniversary issue)
Superman #408 (Impending nuclear war, answers the question of why doesn't Clark just disarm all nuclear warheads around the world)
Superman #416 (Make sure you read the main story and the back-up! And then go back again ;) )
Action Comics #500 (Anniversary issue, describing Superman's life)
There is sooo much more! I haven't even mentioned the 90s yet, which of course entails the death of Superman, the long hair, getting married to Lois and so much more. And the 2000s, of which I've only read a handful but a lot of it is really good. And golden-age Superman, which I've only recently really gotten into but I can't recommend it enough.
I can also recommend following the superman-bot on twitter that recommends a random comic every hour. It's worked wonders for me just reading random issues of which I like the cover and not worrying about continuity/reading order too much.
This is getting long but I hope it helps. I'm always happy to help with finding comics for Superman or Batman or other characters.
Anyway if I were to make an actual Superman reading guide it would just say 'start at action comics #1 and read everything inbetween that and the current issue of action comics'. So I've tried to contain myself here, really.
#asks#superman#clark kent#superbat#sorry i took long to reply i was away for a couple days#also srsly read superman 416 it's funny

The Legacy of Michael Schumacher in Formula One
When a young German driver made his Formula One debut at the Belgium Grand Prix in 1991 as a replacement driver for the Irish Jordan-Ford team, little did the paddock around him know the lasting impact that he would have on the sport. When he made his debut in the sport which he would eventually become synonymous with, Michael Schumacher was a relatively unknown driver but he made himself known quickly by qualifying seventh, already matching the team's second highest qualifying performance of the season. Schumacher was then quickly signed by Benetton for the rest of the 1991 season and he would win his first and second drivers' titles consecutively in 1994 and 1995 with the team, before moving to a struggling Ferrari team and returning them to the glory days they had dreamed of since the '70's, when he achieved the momentous five in a row and become the first seven time world champion.
Thirty years on from Schumacher's debut, Max Verstappen has become the first World Champion not to have raced against the great German driver since Niki Lauda.
Lauda, won his third and final World Championship in 1984 and retired from racing in F1 in 1985, was followed by Alan Prost (who won the championship in 1985, 1986 & 1989, and then again in 1993), Nelson Piquet (who won his third and final title in 1987), Aryton Senna (the legendary Brazilian won his three world titles in 1988, 1990 & 1991, respectively), Nigel Mansell (who won his world title in 1992), Damon Hill (who clenched the title in 1996), Jacques Villeneuve (the World Champion of 1997), Mika Häkkinen (who won his two world titles in 1998 & 1999), Fernando Alonso (who claimed the title in 2005 & 2006, respectively), Kimi Räikkönen (who, in 2007, became the first - and so far the only - Ferrari driver since Michael himself to claim the title), Lewis Hamilton (the only other driver to achieve seven world titles, winning in 2008, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2020, respectively), Jensen Button (who achieved the title in 2009), Sebastian Vettel (who became the youngest World Champion when he first won in 2010, he therefore is also the youngest driver to achieve four world championships in row as he also won the title again in 2011, 2012 & 2013, respectively) & Nico Rosberg (who achieved his championship in 2016) who all raced against Michael Schumacher at least once during his years in F1 (between 1991 & 2006 and then from 2010 to 2012).
Max's win makes him the first Dutch driver to get his hands on the trophy but the Dutchman's wins is reflective of something more. We are at the dawn of a new era in Formula One. A new generation of drivers are coming to the forefront of the sport, drivers like Alex Albon (who's rejoining the grid with Williams after a year's absence), Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri), Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Lando Norris (Maclaren), Esteban Ocon (Alpine), George Russell (who's moving from Williams to Mercedes in the new year), Yuki Tsunoda (Alpha Tauri) & Guanyu Zhou (who is making his Formula One debut at Alfa Romeo in the new year and is also the first Chinese driver in Formula One's history). Majority of these drivers grew up competing with each other in karting, formula 3, formula 2, etc, and most importantly were all inspired by the legendary German driver.
It's mad to think that 37 years worth of champions all raced with Michael but it's also mad to think the first driver not to have raced against Michael in Formula One has photos like these with the - arguably - greatest formula 1 driver of all time:
There's interviews with Michael & Max's father from the early 2000's where they talk about their kids & if they could see them in f1 (in one such interview, Michael jokes that they have never had any sort of argument in their friendship but this could be the first if "our two" would be racing each other & Jos remarked that they're similar ages (Max is only 2 years older than Mick) so they would probably compete against each other if they decide to go into racing as they grow up, which they've both have now. It's fitting perhaps, that this year, the year Max has become World Champion, Mick is on the grid beside him. In the same interview, Michael added laughing that he thinks horse riding is a much better sport for their kids, which his oldest child Gina does now almost 20 years later.
Some may claim this is the passing of the torch, but I will always argue that Michael already passed the torch in his final race, to his friend and fellow German driver Sebastian Vettel. While Vettel had already clenched the decisive grid position to guarantee he'd have the points to become a world champion once again, Schumacher allowed Vettel to overtake him without any defense and simply waved him through, essentially changing the guard, passing the torch from era of drivers to the next. While Sebastian's story is still being written to this day, Michael's time in F1 drew to a close as he watched the kingdom lights shine on his friend, who he had known as a child, become not only a four time world champion but the youngest four time champion in history. Drivers like Prost, Piquet, Mansell and the legendary Senna, are all connected to Sebastian - and thus the rest of his era and those who followed them into the sport - by Michael. The torch still burns bright.
This is, however, a poignant moment to reflect. Michael remains the only driver to achieve five championships in a row (Juan Manuel Fangio being the only other driver to achieve five world championships, outside of the two seven time world champions; Hamilton & Schumacher), a record he retains for the foreseeable future. He also still holds the record of most fastest laps (77) and still shares the record of seven World titles with Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton, Vettel and Alonso are all signed for at least another year in Formula One and can/will contend for future world titles but the door has been opened for the younger drivers to breakthrough. Today belongs to Max, those young drivers and the legacy of one German driver who debuted thirty years ago.
Said German driver's greatest legacy is still being written. His son has been unanimously praised during his rookie season in the sport, his hard work and dedication reminiscent of his father's. Little did he know when he was giving that interview that his son would follow in his footsteps or that his friend's son would be the first world champion in 37 years not to have raced against him but perhaps it was clear to him even then that his greatest legacy would be firmly written by his son and daughter.

Online shipping, the fetishisation of gay men, and the romanticisation of queer trauma
An essay by me!
Word count: 2.8k
A link to the Google Doc version of this essay.
A big thank you to my friends Nathan @themeerkatnate, Mav @not-mavv , and Duke @dukedark-ness for reading this essay and giving me their thoughts as mlms on the topic. Make sure to check out their blogs and give them a follow!
So I was on a lovely website by the name of Twitter.com yesterday, just scrolling through while having my afternoon cup of coffee, when I saw that viral post of a girl reading a Larry fanfic through a classroom projector. I'm sure most of you have seen it. It's gone viral on Instagram, TikTok, and likely Tumblr too, and if you haven't come across it I'm positive you will soon.
Now, after getting through my initial reaction to that post which was, holy fuck, that's so embarrassing, I had a second reaction of... wait, this ship is still around?
And after I had some thoughts on the incredible permanence of some online ships and the weird obsolescence of others, I did get to thinking of how lots of these popular ships seem to stem from the same types of perceived relationship dynamics and homophobic stereotypes.
These online fandoms often seem to have an obsession with objects of queer trauma, such as having to hide a relationship, lying about sexuality for self-preservation, and even social rejection. So, after some opinions from my followers and the great archive that is the internet, I've decided to discuss some of the most popular examples of online shipping and the particular nuances they came with.
NOTE: Out of respect for all these people, I won't be sharing viral images or videos of them in perceived romantic proximity (or even kissing, as is applicable for some examples), but I will be describing certain moments I deem to be relevant. So even if you're unfamiliar with them, you won't be confused as to what I'm talking about.
NOTE 2: Although not all people within these fandoms were/are toxic, this essay is focused on the overall toxicity of the fandoms, and how they are toxic more so as a "hive" than as a group of individuals. When I refer to a fandom I don't mean every person involved in the fandom, but rather the collective impact of the group.
1. Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson
This is arguably the most popular example of online shipping. The absolute permanence of this ship, and how its fandom never seems to fully die off even beyond the lifespan of One Direction as it once stood, is downright impressive.
I'm going to be the first to admit I was never in the loop with this fandom. My childhood best friend was actually a massive Larry shipper and asked me to beta read one of her fics, but that was before I even knew who tf Harry and Louis were! Not because I avoided the fandom or even because I rejected the online shipping, but just by coincidence, I delved into the world of pop punk music right when One Direction began gaining its popularity. I bought my first ever album, Riot by Paramore, in 2011- only a year after One Direction made their X-Factor debut. So, this fandom just bypassed me by a sort of weird coincidence.
But I don't need to be in the loop with this fandom to know the astronomical obsession with these two men, no, these two BOYS, was extremely toxic. In 2010, when One Direction made their debut, Harry Styles was only 16 years old. And Louis Tomlinson wasn't much older at 19! This made the two of them incredibly young when this unprecedented wave of shipping hit the internet, and although that must be traumatising for anyone, I cannot even fathom how overwhelming it must've been for two boys that young.
I'm 18, almost 19 now, and I cannot begin to imagine how scary it was for the two of them to have their every interaction nitpicked within an inch of its life by thousands upon thousands of people online. I do not know this myself, but from numerous recounts by some of my followers, this massively impacted Harry's and Louis' nondescript relationship in real life, seemingly driving the two previously close friends apart.
Now, before we move on, there's something we need to talk about. And that is the obsession with the dominance/submission dynamic within the world of gay shipping.
With almost every popular mlm (an acronym meaning man-loving-man) ship based on real people, it seems that fandoms have a particular fascination with power imbalances in these relationships. You don't even need to look at the insane amount of fanfictions based on BDSM to figure this out. In almost all of the examples I'll be citing today, there is an age gap within the perceived relationship and a person the fandom has seemingly decided to be the top/dominant figure.
Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson are 3 years apart in age. Although it isn't all that relevant now, an age gap of 3 years when you're in your late teens is a lot more significant. In 2012, for example, when this shipping really started gaining traction, Harry Styles was 18 and Louis Tomlinson was 21. That power imbalance, albeit not that significant, is enough for a fandom to latch on to. We'll see this a lot more in the coming example with Dan and Phil.
2. Dan Howell and Phil Lester
It's impossible to have a discussion about internet shipping without talking about Dan and Phil.
Dan Howell and Phil Lester, although being popular YouTubers individually, are arguably one of the internet's most iconic duos. The two creators published their first videos together in 2009, and while their relationship was already a motive of speculation back then, the peak of the "Phan" shipping definitely came in the 2013-2016 era of Tumblr.
Now, I'm going to admit… I was actually on Tumblr when that happened.
The 2013-2016 period perfectly aligns with my middle school days (I started middle school in 2013 and high school in 2016), and I was not only on Tumblr back then, but I was on Wattpad too! Again, this wasn't a fandom I had much contact with as I had a huge anime phase in middle school and I was on Tumblr posting mainly photography and Soul Eater content more than anything.
But I did watch some of Dan and Phil's videos! And the occasional "Phan" content did not completely evade me as one of my closest friends in middle school had a fanchat for them. I wasn't involved in the fandom myself but they were actually one of the few English-speaking YouTubers I watched once in a blue moon (back then I watched mainly Brazilian YouTubers). One thing I did in fact notice over the years, around 2014ish perhaps, was that the two of them seemed to grow increasingly "awkward" around each other, in a way that many folks on the internet thought was reminiscent to Markiplier/Jacksepticeye, two YouTubers who also dealt with extraordinary amounts of shipping.
I'm not the only one who thinks this. The change in Dan and Phil's relationship, at least to the outside world, was clear to almost anyone who watched their videos for a while. I cannot blame them at all. The shipping was nuts. Between the countless fan videos, speculative comments, and insurmountable number of fanfics, there's no way the two of them didn't feel the weight of the shipping. The term "demon phannie" made its way into internet vernacular and there it stayed for years. Even Shane Dawson, who was one of the largest creators on the platform at the time, made several videos speculating on the nature of Dan and Phil's relationship and their sexual orientations.
There was even porn made in which actors with similar appearances to the creators were made to have sex on camera.
Now, this is actually a rare example where the two people involved in the ship actually came out as gay once the shipping seemed to die down. I'm incredibly happy Dan and Phil both reached a point where they were comfortable being publicly out, but I hate to say I'm shocked this day ever came. If I'd gone through what the two of them did, I don't know if I'd ever trust the internet.
And again, this ship's fandom definitely had an obsession with the power dynamics they thought existed between the people within the ship. Dan Howell is 4 years younger than Phil Lester, and was only 18 in 2009, when they started making videos together. From my personal understanding, the shipping was often quite focused on this dominant/submissive dynamic especially in discussions from their early relationship. And this is in no way exclusive to Dan and Phil.
This general fascination with the older man/younger man dynamic, in my opinion, plays into the homophobic stereotype that gay men are predators. The idea that gay men usually seek younger men, and somehow "convince" them to engage in homosexual relationships, is popular homophobic rhetoric. The popularisation, exaggeration, and fetishisation of these power imbalances, in age and/or in relationship dynamics, is directly harmful to the mlm community.
Not only that, but the romanticisation of a "hidden/forbidden relationship" is also detrimental not only to gay men and the mlm community, but to queer people as a whole. Queer people face huge trauma having to hide their relationships; queer attraction is already a societal taboo. And acting like this is good, or even desirable, is harmful to queer people as a whole, regardless of whether or not it's actually applicable to the people being shipped. It normalises this trauma not only to cisgender, heterosexual people, but to impressionable queer youth who grow to believe this type of trauma is to be expected.
3. Frank Iero and Gerard Way
This is another example where the perceived power imbalances between the two subjects of the shipping were directly exploited online. Now, this ship did precede the others mentioned above. If we're looking at this topic chronologically, this particular ship did come first in the shipping timeline. It's closer to the origin of the shipping extended universe, if you will.
In case you aren't familiar with them, Frank Iero and Gerard Way are both members of the American emo band My Chemical Romance. This ship is the first one here of which I don't recall the full popularity. It really peaked in popularity around the late 2000s, circa 2008. And I don't remember this moment online as in 2008, I was only 6 years old and believe it or not, I wasn't really all that concerned with rumoured homoeroticism as a first grader.
However, the popularity of this ship did carry over into the 2013-2015 Tumblr shipping boom. The emo fandom (or "bandom" as it was called) involving not only My Chemical Romance but other similar bands such as Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, and Pierce the Veil, found its hub on Tumblr.
During this time, I did in fact listen to this style of music, but was focused a lot more on the anime side of Tumblr as mentioned earlier. Of course, I wasn't 13 years old like, "hey, this type of content might be harmful and can inadvertently perpetuate homophobic stereotypes," I just happened to care more about my silly little anime and ended up not getting involved.
This ship does involve a discussion that the others don't, however. With Frank Iero and Gerard Way, there is quite often a certain sentiment of, "Oh, they brought this upon themselves!" as the two band members very famously kissed during a show in 2007. In my opinion, though, this doesn't really justify all the obsessive shipping. If you look at Green Day, a band often grouped in with MCR as another famous pop punk group, the members don't follow too different of a trajectory. Billie Joe Armstrong has, on numerous occasions, kissed both of his fellow band members onstage- particularly Tré Cool, the drummer. And Billie Joe Armstrong is openly bisexual, which none of the members of MCR seem to be but some, or even all of Billie's bandmates, are too.
You'd think Green Day would face a lot more shipping as the more persistent onstage homoeroticism and Billie Joe's openness about his sexuality would warrant more "substantiated" speculation. However, Green Day faces nowhere near as much shipping as My Chemical Romance. Why is this? I actually don't know. It might've been because Green Day has been around for over a decade longer and generally has an older fandom, but I really am not that sure.
It could also be because of the lower lack of potential for forced relationship dynamics. The members of Green Day are all less than a year apart in age and are even similar in height. However, Frank Iero is 4 years younger than Gerard Way, who is not only the frontman of My Chemical Romance, but also considered to be the group's intellectual and creative "leader". Even beyond that, Gerard Way is quite visibly taller, and the perceived power difference between the two of them definitely did not elude their fans.
This difference could even be partly due to the lack of a "mystery" with Green Day. There's not as much to speculate as, well… the members of Green Day are already open about their sexual orientations. It might be that shipping in the Green Day fandom has less of a forbidden appeal for most people.
Of course, I won't just keep repeating myself, but my previous points about forced relationship dynamics still stand.
4. Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch
Better known for their roles in BBC Sherlock as Sherlock and Watson, Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch unfortunately had their roles follow them well into real life. This is the example I know least about, so have these thoughts from a follower by the name of @indubitably-a-goblin, who had the following to say:
"the main issues i had with it were:
a) they were both married at the time, freeman to amanda abbington and cumberbatch to sophie hunter (in which both had children)
b) the main reasoning for it was their chemistry in the many projects they've done together. which is, shockingly, their Whole Job. They're actors! That's what they're supposed to do! if they weren't good at interacting then they wouldn't be good actors! i don't know how people can't understand this.
c) they're real people. we don't know them. we aren't friends with them. we aren't their family members. we have zero right to be pushing this onto them and ruining their friendship by doing so. (this one relates to most of the ships you've mentioned though)
d) healthy friendships between two men are ignored so plainly in most medias and in fandom. its obvious that these two men have a relationship, but that doesn't mean it's a romantic one.
e) its fine to ship their characters, but actors shouldn't be treated as less-than-human or some sort of prop. they're doing a job, and once they are off-screen, they aren't here for your entertainment."
I believe she did a great job of summing it up on her own, and for the sake of avoiding redundancy, I'll leave it at that!
5. Corpse Husband and Sykkuno- an emerging yet subtle example
I am absolutely positive you remember how popular the game Among Us was a couple of months ago. And with the popularity of this game, some of its most prominent content creators became the targets of online shipping- as is the case with YouTubers and streamers Corpse Husband and Sykkuno.
Although the shipping involving these two creators is nowhere near as strong as it was/is with the examples above, I do think there is once again a reemergence of a common theme here. Whilst Sykkuno is known for his happy-go-lucky, almost "innocent" persona, Corpse Husband is the antithesis of this, known for his much darker and moodier personality.
Do I even have to mention what the common theme seems to be?
Again, although the popularity of shipping - at least with real people - seems to have died down a bit since the Tumblr shipping boom of the early to mid 2010s, I do believe this example is worth mentioning. Even though the creators are still close, they have in fact expressed discomfort regarding the shipping, and I can only hope the internet as a whole lets their friendship blossom and exist naturally without obsessive speculation.
My final thoughts
As explored in the essay:
The romanticisation of objects of queer trauma as a part of online shipping normalises queer trauma to both cishet and queer youth.
Online shipping, especially at a high intensity, can end up negatively impacting the very relationships they pine over.
The relationship dynamics often forced on mlm ships perpetuate homophobic stereotypes about non-heterosexual men.
If anyone else has thoughts on this matter, do share! This essay is moreso an opinionated observational piece and isn't meant to be taken as fact but rather just as my thoughts on the matter. I hope it was useful as a reflective piece regardless!

Maribat March 2021 - Half time
In my AO3 account I am also updating the 'A playboy billionaire, an ambassador and the secret love-child' title, and sometimes I add(ed) commentary why I write something the way I do.
Masterlist
From the last fifty days here is all the plus note:
First day
In Red Robin (2009-2011) comics Vicki Vale was a little bit too noisy for her own good, that's why I used her personal annoyance against Bruce Wayne in this story.
Third day
Vanessa Rios was an assistant district attorney in Gotham in the Robin (1993-2009) run. Here I am using her as the Wayne's legal team head. Tamara Fox, Lucius Fox's daughter, is friends with Tim Drake in Red Robin (2009-2011) comics and here too. Also she is an intern with the HR department who knows about the BatFam alteregos.
Fifth day
In the comics, Alfred always followed Bruce to his 'trips' (in 'Batman and Son' to London, 'Batman & Robin Annual' to an scavenger hunt, in 'Batman Inc.' to every country where they found representatives...) However because of Damian's unpredictable behaviour he stayed at the manor with the children in this story.
Sixth day
So Young Justice thing is a little complicated to me if I dare to say something about it. There was the 'Young Justice: The Secret' and its sequels. Then there were 'The New52' and 'DC Rebirth' era, plus the animation show. And they all are kind of okay..ish, furthermore I wanted to keep the principles like the main members (Tim Drake, Connor Kent, Bart Allen and Cassie Sandsmark), however I never liked their too childish behavior in some of the works (and the mixing with 'The Titans). So in this story, here, they are more adult..ish, but more relaxed and cheerful than 'The Titans' ever was (like in comics, not in the shows).
Eighth day
In the 'Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir' show they showed Lila as a manipulator without any remorse, which got me to think she has antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). I am not a doctor but I had some basic lesson in psychology, and I have a natural curiosity about things so I always research everything. With diagnosed ASPD the person has to be older then 18, however I read its symptoms can show up in childhood, and it can lead to an earlier diagnosis like 14-15 years old early.
In the case of Lila she deceives people and uses them (✓). Don't makes long term plans or thinking through about her behavior (✓), however has a set on some goal she wants to achieve (✓). She has a sense of superiority above of her classmates and adults in her environment (✓), nevertheless does't have any remorse or guilt to mistreat them (✓). Uses charisma and her fake charming persona to get something or someone (✓), however didn't value them more than tools or prizes (✓).
I didn't see any real aggressive behavior from Lila beside akumatizations (✓), but on its own I think it's enough evidence, that she has this disorder (and not the many that she claimed). In normal aggressive way Lila didn't show herself (like physical violence, loud angry outbursts, big fits in front of everyone) yet, rather she uses Akumatization to hide that kind of behavior (when Adrien tried to stand up she became willingly Chameleon, or the Heroe's Day, or Oni-Chan). So her Akumatised forms and helping to Hawkmoth are the evidences that she has aggressive behavior, however they are not the classic forms (but we also can remember the threatening in the bathroom, but I think that was more intimidation and showing her superiority then pure aggressiveness).
And I wanted that recreate and strengthen this 'fact' a little bit so it would be more obvious than in the show.
Ninth day
In the comics there are so many take on Bruce Wayne it's kind of hard to count it. We could list the Batman persona, when he kind of let his children do what they want within his no-kill-rule (like living alone at fourteen with bunch of other teenager - 'Teen Titans' or 'Young Justice' or as it looks like to go rough - Robin, Red Hood). And there is the obvious martyr-parent take, when he has to know everything about his children, but he is always silent about the important things ('Death of the family' - 'Batman and Robin: Born to kill' - 'The Hunt for Robin'). And one of my favorites the worried-tired father take, when he is kind of showing his emotions and trying to love his kids ('Super Sons' - 'Robin Rises' - 'Prelude to the Wedding: Nightwing vs. Hush' ...).
And I decided to use the last with a more active take from the first (like he lets everyone do their thing but he is monitoring them within reasons). In the comics there are many accusations about being someones father (with Julie Madison or Mariah Shelley), and here in my take he is trying to be responsible (for the sake of his children, mainly for Damian and Jason) and checks every claim out personally (so they also can do DNS test).
Tenth day
Alya Césaire is a complicated someone in the show. At first she is portrayed as a fierce helper for the protagonist, Marinette. She is stubborn and reckless, but royal to her best friends.
Then came Lila and the makers sharpened her stubborn tunnel vision. This I saw it first at the 'Lady Wifi' episode, when she clearly didn't remember about the first day, when Ladybug saved Chloé (or ignored it). After that she always fixated on 'Adrienette' (or everything else if it's interesting - Dark Cupid) when the girl, herself had other things to do (Princess Fragrance, Puppeteer 2, Reflektdoll 2, Timebreaker). So it was not that big surprise when her tunnel vision turned to Lila, and she (and everybody in her class) forgot about that they all met Jagged Stone and with his crocodile already.
Yeah, it's all true, however unlike Lila, Alya didn't show any other big social flaw. And she is 14 years old and middle child, which is kind of important in someone personality. She has to be a mature figure and a little child at the same time in her sibling's eyes. She has to compete attention in their parents eyes and be smart about it.
Moreover if we look at the Collège Françoise Dupont's students, they are all spoiled, not just Chloé or Lila or Adrien. Yes, they are not that bad like the three, but they are all sheltered to a certain degree. Their family don't have financial problems (famous chef, designers, mayor, famous bakery, curator in the most famous museum, police officer, famous pantomime, ...), plus they are all in a prestigious school where they can't meet people with everyday problems (and rich spoiled kid is not an everyday occurrence in my country). And beside some vision problems (Max, Sabrina) they are all healthy and the first time to meet a disability is when Lila arrived. So it's natural if they don't really know how to interact right with her (putting aside that whole lie thing).
And I think they, especial Alya, need first a little life experience, before they could be called responsible about their acts. And here I am trying to write it this kind of way, where they are all flawed, but they can learn from it.
Human being can be shallow and not perfect. These children only heard one perspective from Lila, and another from Marinette. In the show the makers not exactly specified about how well the classmates know Marinette and how depth Marinette and Alya friendship is, so there is already some trust issue.
Like yeah all of they are going to concerts, cinema, each others, however they didn't show so far any serious conservation between them (maybe the only exception is Adrien-Marinette combo). Until this year when Adrien and Alya got transferred in the class, the classmates don't even help Marinette with Chloé bullying. And one year friendship - how beautiful is it tho - is not that depth and stable, especially with that many secrets they have. And Lila 'charming' personality came into this still fragile relationship at the right time to prove this.
I am not saying that the makers is doing good to simplifies the relationships. Because rather they missed so many ziccers for the sake of promote new hero designs and the overwritten romantic scene, it's physical hurting me. But they are right that we are talking sheltered-traumatized-too naive kids, who sometimes had unearned magic powers (looking at Chloé, Alya, Kim).
And I didn't ever going the length of mentioning the adult characters. It's an other kind of wormhole.
Marinette was the only one who openly disobeyed Lila's wants. She stands up against her lies in the public so she is a real obstacle for Lila. While Adrien is only trying in the background without any witness (I don't say it's bad, because with some case it's better, but not here), and the boy is too valuable to Lila.
Lila already showed in the series she didn't stop with the lies and she is brave enough to ruin someone carrier with them (Marinette - 'Ladybug', Nathalie and Gorilla - 'Oni-Chan', Alya - 'Volpina'). And Adrien watched all of it in the front seat, and he kind of knows that Lila's main target here to discredit and broke Marinette/Ladybug (and Adrien, himself also, but it's his perspective and he is very sheltered and naive about it).
And this story she got another one to ruin. Bruce Wayne, himself. And as her fake charming side melts away in her anger as she is focusing more and more on her targets.
Eleventh day
Speed Force is one of the Seven Forces of the Universe. It grants the power of the speedsters. And some of them merged with it (for example Barry Allen). Speed Force has a direct connection to the time flow and with the Multiverse (or now Omniverse). The biggest event of it is the Flashpoint (2011) which started the New52 era. And Batman doesn't want to mix this kind of force with a really mysterious ancient magic.
Nightrunner's first appearance was in 2011 in Detective Comics Annual #12. Within the Batman Incorporated line Bruce recruited Bilal Asselah, French-Algerian citizen to represent Batman in Paris. Here he is a mentor/background assistant to the Team Miraculous and a representative of Batman Inc.
Fourteenth day
Wang Fu is not the most mature character in the show and I think it says it all. Being an 186 years old is the Great Guardian after he accidentally destroyed the temple, he is kind of shameful and amateur. And if we contrasted him with Batman... yeah. Batman is NOT happy and takes the control from the old master.
Fifteenth day
I know Cyborg, alias Victor Stone is currently shown as a founding member of the Justice League (since 2011), however I am prefer him more in the Titans. And it's not just because of the animation show form 2003, but also in the comics he is more himself with the first Titans then with the -all mighty- Justice League. And I also wanted him to have a little cameo in this story because in the Super Sons (2017-) he was kind of like a babysitter for the boys. And to me it's kind of funny how many times the bats short circuited him (Robin Rises, Super Sons: Parent Trap, ...).
Sixteenth day
Damian Wayne is a complicated character. For ten years he was teached to kill. He only learnt about his mother at eight. He only learnt about his father at ten. Thalia used him for anything from power play to plotting someone death. Bruce loves him, but he is so moronic about his own emotions it's kind of painful to read sometimes. And there is the thing where Damian is never enough, his mother cloned him (Heretic), his father has other wards (mainly Red Robin). Dick Grayson went incognito spying when the boy had finally a healthier relationship (Grayson: The Superspy). His best friend, Jon Kent was suddenly older then him (2018 Superman #16). Alfred was killed in front of him (2016 Batman #77). Yeah, Damian is a jerk, but he has every right to be a jerk in my opinion. And I wanted that recreate here as Lila is a liar and threatening his 'only' position as a blood son. His only weapon to prevent it to have a fit and doing what was teached to him.

* ( dylan o’brien , twenty seven , cis male , he/him . ross lynch ) did you see the new picture of theodore wayne in the tabloids ? the singer / musician / actor is getting pretty famous these days , and being humble is the talk of their social media . but will being impulsive cause their downfall ? they're known by shine weekly as the the kirk , and it sounds like the 9.6m fans they have agree . however , ( cameras catch wayne trying to pay off cops while getting arrested! ) is all over the internet this morning , lets hope it doesn't tarnish their reputation .
hello, i’m danvers and i hail in the pacific timezone. i’m super stoked to be here! his intro is gonna be a mess because i’m a mess, so m’sorry in advance.
character.
full name: theodore noel wayne. nicknames: theo, ted, teddy. date of birth: november seventh. build: 5′11″, thin and lengthy. hair / eye color: brunette, styled / hazel. current residence: los angeles. orientation: heteromantic. career claim: ross lynch; singer / musician / actor. character inspo: steve harrington, harvey kinkle, jesse katsopolis.
about.
he grew up in some town in texas to a father who was a music teacher and a mother who was a tax accountant. he was the middle kid; having one older brother and one younger sister.
learning the strings came natural for him. in fact, music ran rampant with both his siblings. by the time he was nine, theo was picking up the guitar and banging on the drums. he was put into music lessons quickly after.
fame came to him at a mall. yes, you read that right. it was pretty random but his mom was ecstatic when the talent agent spotted them. the lady said he had the look -whatever that meant.
it’s a scam - his dad would say in between sips of coffee, which always garnered a glare from across the kitchen table. after about seven no’s, his eighth audition finally brought back promising news. all that was needed was him in front of a piano and a script that asked for singing. when casting found he had a voice and was multitalented with instruments, they jumped at the opportunity.
he was fifteen when he got his first break. it was a kids sitcom, sure, but he was young himself and it was a lead role. he’d play austin moon; an extroverted, fun-loving singer and instrumentalist.
at one point, production tried to dye his hair blonde for the pilot episode but his mom put a stop to that. no one touched those baby browns.
los angeles would become his new home away from home, until eventually it was home. see, when disney announced they were greenlighting austin & ally as a series, his parents came to the agreement it was time they made the move from texas to los angeles permanently.
* everything after was a whirl wind. he finished austin & ally, his siblings furthered their own desires of being in the spotlight but with music. he tested his own acting career with film until he was offered the part on a netflix original, the chilling adventures of sabrina. life was good, until he stumbled upon alcohol and had a bit too fun at parties. now he’s taking a break from acting and focusing on music with his older brother. -the driver era has a good ring to it, doesn’t it?
personality.
he’s always been a goof ball; easy to talk too and approachable. but with first impressions, he comes off quiet and to himself. once he opens up to someone, you'll have to get him to shut up.
has bad anxiety, especially right before interviews. bites his nails way too much. has never been a fan of confrontation unless he’s inebriated.
protective of his families privacy. doesn’t mind taking photos with fans even if he’s in comfy sweats and just trying to get starbucks.
has trouble when things get serious. big on ignoring a problem until it eventually goes away. the kinda guy someone goes to for advice, but never follows it himself.
timeline. 12 years span.
* television.
austin & ally - 2009 / 2014 ( 5 years. )
teen beach movie - 2011
teen beach 2 - 2013
girl meets world ( one ep ) - 2013
chilling adventures of sabrina - 2018 / 2020
* film.
my friend dahmer - 2015
status update - 2016
* music.
the drivers era - 2020 / present. musical duo w/ brother. released: preacher man & afterglow.
wanted connections.
these are gonna be so basic, but a more detailed wc will come in due time!
a roommate / neighbors / friends / co-stars he’s worked w/ onset or actors he’s met during award shows, idk / fellow musicians / frenemies / former or current gf his publicist orchestrated to boost their public image / a rival / someone who’s a bad influence / a bestfriend plsss
#shines.intro#・ 。 ◟ / 𝐚. introduction .#this took way longer than it should have#it's bad but like this and i'll hit ya up to plot

re: "Wallace Chung only acts in idol dramas"
me: ??????????
Currently sorting out my life after Houye has left ;;;;; And realizing 原来这些年小哇的作品看的还真多。
row1: 1995 Detective Investigation Files/2002 The Four Detective Guards/ 2008 Royal Tramp / 2009 Let's Dance
row2: 2004 Treacherous Waters/2010 菩提樹下/2006 Secret History of Kangxi/2010 Too Late to Say I love you
row3: 2011 Imminent Crisis/ 2013 愛神來了/ 2013 The Demi Gods and Semi Devils/ 2013 最美的時光
row4: 2014 The Stand in / 2015 Monster Hunt/ 2014 勇士之城/ 2015 My Sunshine
row5: 2016 Three/ 2016 Tik Tok/ 2018 All out of Love/ 2016 Bounty Hunters
row6: 2019 宠爱/2018 Liberation/ 2017 General and I / 2021 The Sword and the Brocade
The last 3 are what I have actively watched in recent years.
Out of everything, only 最美的時光+General and I+ 凉生/The Sword and the Brocade are based on novels = big IP projects. Don't only watch those 4 works and slam him??
Royal Tramp +Demi Gods and Semi Devils are also classic wuxia books. The Four Detective Guards/Treacherous Waters are also based on a book series. Everything else is a huge variety in genres and roles.
Little brother, soldier, doctor, lawyer, general, serial killer, the average joe, CEO, coolie, emperor, detective, cop, wuxia hero. Genres like wuxia, ancient dramas, 都市/言情, Min Guo era, 抗日, thriller/suspense, he's all there??
Also, he likes to work with familiar people. Xiao Wa got the role from The Stand In by repeatedly going for casting after seeing the movie. The director for that also directed Treacherous Waters/General and I (which Xiao wa also helped produce). My Sunshine and 凉生 were also directed by the same director, Liu Junjie. He was also voted to cast in My Sunshine by fans and Liu Dao waited a whole year for Wallace's schedule to open up.
He's everywhere in all kinds genres and roles. Every single one is very distinct and different, and it's almost scary when you compare and contrast them and it's one person acting out all these different roles. He's so versatile and people say he's hogging all the 霸道总裁/idol roles when they probably have not watched his older works.
Speaking of霸道总裁...
He Yichen was a lawyer?? Lu Licheng only became a big boss at the end of the series.
in 一路繁花相送, he's a director. In 往后余生, he's going to be a doctor. Cheng Tianyou is the only one who could be considered a 总裁
smh 反正我们没地方说理区
可能我哇长的太霸道了。
anyways, he is also quite aware of his age and it's limitations to his career.
rant over, this is way too many tags for tumblr so 拖小锦心的福就这样吧
waiting for 幸福的理由/宿敌/往后余生 to air.
表白ing and missing Xu Lingyi,
祝小哇一直健康快乐,大红大紫.<3

I was going to wait on Stargate Atlantis since I just posted about SG1, but it turns out I have more bad news to share.
Wraithbait is gone.
Both Area 52 and Wraithbait. Jesus. So much for early Stargate fic!
SGA, as it is often abbreviated, followed SG1 in the Stargate franchise. Slash fandom’s focus was largely on John Sheppard and Rodney McKay. John is an ace pilot. Rodney is a hypochondriac scientist. They’re both total dorks.
As cheesy sci-fi, SG1 and SGA are pretty similar. As fandoms, however, there’s quite a difference:
SGA hit just enough later that it attracted tons of livejournal-based fans I knew who had never dipped a toe in SG1 fandom. It was a Fandom That Ate Fandom, draining the BNF writers from all over slash-dom.
Being a little later also meant that it has exponentially more good vids online. I always kind of resented SGA fandom for eclipsing my beloved SG1, but I sure do love the vids!
One of the more famous ones to show at Vividcon is Another Sunday by Jescaflowne. Youtube has it region-blocked all to hell, but it’s still up and probably viewable through the usual sketchy means.
youtube
And how could I not share the glorious crack of Soccer Practice by bironic, a rare slash vid showing off hottie Jason Momoa as Ronon Dex. On AO3 here.
youtube
For the juggernaut ship, no vid could be more in-character for melodramatic Rodney than Grace Kelly by Diana Williams:
youtube
SGA was squarely in the Livejournal era, and a lot of fans from back then have migrated to AO3. Its influence on modern AO3-ish fandom is tremendous, as I’m sure half of you reading this can attest better than I.
One effect on a more meta level was to make female fandom more irate than ever over TPTB being sexist little shits. Reportedly, SGA attracted too many female fans for the showrunners’ comfort, and they wanted to retool their franchise as SGU, a darker and edgier version designed to attract a more BSG reboot-like audience.
Needless to say, when you’re a franchise that’s good at putting aliens in gold lamé bikinis rather than at coherent writing, going darker and edgier does not work.
SGU was a miserable flop, the entire Stargate franchise stalled, and SGA slash fandom developed an enduring hateboner for TPTB.
At Escapade, SGA has had a steady presence from 2005 through to the present. Past panels include:
2006 - First Marriage of Classic and Postmodern Fandoms? (Are we writing fanfic for the show, or are most stories just meta versions of stories from older fandoms, and commenting on each other comments? Remember when people complained all we had was hummus? All SGA has is crack(fic).)
2007 - John Sheppard: Psychokiller or Pretty, Pretty Princess (From mild-mannered sci-fi geek to special-ops xenocide, John Sheppard is one of the prettiest psychopaths in two galaxies. Which is the 'real' Sheppard? Can these two personalities be reconciled? How does this dichotomy in canon affect how we choose to portray him in fanfic?)
2008 - Crackfic, AUs, and Characterization, Oh My! (SGA canon is full of AUs and crack. Do the show's wacky plot twists encourage us to boldly go further out than other fandoms have gone before? And what happens when we go AU: why are John, Rodney, Ronon, and Teyla so recognizable even when they're planted in Harlequin romance, NASCAR, a symphony orchestra, or a diner in Maine?)
2009 - On a Clear Day, I Can See the Pegasus Galaxy (How are you feeling about the end of SGA-relief or regret? Are you looking forward to the rumored film(s), or planning to be snuggled up with your favorite fic that night? Have you ever been part of an active fandom whose canon closed, and do you have any thoughts (or advice!) about how to keep the fannish energy going? Let's discuss our hopes, fears and fondest dreams for the future of the fandom.)
2011 - Stargate: The End? (We were charmed by the original movie concept, many of us were fannishly enslaved by the first television series, others were entranced by Atlantis and some of us even tuned in for Universe. Are we ready to let the Stargate concept go or are we sitting on the edges of our seats, anxiously awaiting the next incarnation?)
2012 - SGA: Rodney and John: What We See is Not What We Get (We know we're adding slash to whatever's on the screen. With McShep, we really know. John the MENSA/slacker who knows how to fit in chasing brilliant yet obnoxious Rodney? How the Hell did we ever think they wouldn't kill each other, John with his P-90 or Rodney with his brain? Come prepared to argue the pros and cons of Sheppard and McKay, support your favorite character, and argue why Ronon is/isn't damned hotter than either of them.)
2013 - The Cool Kid and the Geek (Rodney loves John because John is sexy-handsome, lithe-and-cat-like, athletic, brave, and ridiculously pretty. He's also one of the Cool Kids, so, yeah, Rodney might fall hard. But Rodney is not sexy-handsome, lithe-and-cat-like, athletic, brave, nor ridiculously pretty. He’s the Geek, so why is John drawn to him? Come argue your point!)
2017 - Stargate: Classic Fandom Flashback
2018 - Stargate: Ten Years On
SGA on Fanlore
SGA on AO3
SGA on FFN
