【Magi】 JuAli Omake Rambles 🖤❤️💛

Snippets from a REALLY long convo I had with my friend Cinna (@/cinnamononions) who was reacting to the YGO DM manga.

It was mainly us going over the Kaiba centric scenes in YGO DM: Death-T arc, and she noted differences in the Finnish TL vs. Viz's official EN TL. I haven't posted that yet. I'll put it in a future post

The convo’s really long so I’ll mainly just post the Magi: JuAli tangent part of our big convo for now.

There's some YGO DM: KaiYami and YGO: GX JohaJu rambles and misc rambles from other series sprinkled in though.

I wanted to compare this Magi: JuAli omake between the fan-TL and Viz's official EN TL.

(I still haven't checked out the JP version for this scene yet. When I do, I'll make a new post)

Fan-TL:

(+) More literal, which is interesting

(+) Usually more accurate in meaning

(+) I personally prefer the prose and wording, especially for important scenes

(-) Readable, but the text and pages aren't as clean obviously cuz they were scanned directly from the magazines at the time of Magi's release, so you can't see art details very well

(-) Fan-TL team had to figure out how to translate the names and terms, etc. So the names change overtime, and the fan scan team eventually adjusts to the most commonly accepted spellings

Me: Also first off I'm gonna start with my rambles that I genuinely prefer the fan-TL for this JuAli omake.

Alibaba's tone in his dialogue generally being much more calmer and softer and empathetic towards Judar (and thus, capturing the original intended meaning and tone much more closely to the OG JP version) is something I 100000% prefer. It feels more fitting to his chara.

Like WOOOOW the way Alibaba's "You seem rather spoiled and pampered, Judar," turns into "What a spoiled brat!" In Viz's version, does change the tone and way it comes across.

It loses the air of humbleness and maturity that his character has, late-Kou Empire arc and beyond

Me: What I cannot stand about Viz's prose is that they make everyone sound the same too. Their way of translating dialogue is so samey sounding. And it's not really the first time that a Viz official TL feels harsher. Like, a lot of softer nuances in charas' speech pattern just gets flat out erased in Viz's official TLs and it annoys me sm.

C: Yeah this is such a Viz thing, god. YGO DM’s Finnish TL still has this issue but at least like. Yugi and Jonouchi use different first person pronouns, etc. Subtle differences.

Me: RIGHT like I've seen tons of series officially localized by Viz and it's so typical of Viz's official TLs /neg

Me: Magi's official TL by Viz is fine, thank god. YGO DM and DGM by Viz are decent at least. My childhood series, KHR and MMBN/EXE were absolutely butchered by Viz's awful official EN TLs by them, tho, holy shit...

Also out of big manga EN localizers, my preferences for TL quality goes like this: Yen Press >>>>>> Kodansha >> Viz

Judar's gay tsundere ass LMFAO 😭

Gay and a menace to women!

In the original, Judar just calls him haniwa ("Clay doll") but in the Viz version it's Sausage. LMAO

Like, one example that comes to mind for me is how Viz translates the JuAli scenes in the Kou Empire arc. Like their meeting on the Dark Continent with Judar and haniwa (clay doll) Alibaba.

Summary: Due to plot/story reasons, Alibaba is currently a sausage shaped haniwa (clay doll) like OoO and travelling with Judar.

Like it makes Alibaba's tone come off WAY different... Like he obviously has this air of humbleness and maturity to him, late Kou Empire arc and beyond, and it’s especially apparent in his scenes with Judar. But it loses that nuance with Viz's version.

The Viz TL is much less softer compared to the OG which is much softer in tone.

Can't say I'm a fan of how Viz translated this compared to the fan-TL tbh but it's. Ok. You get the gist of it. At least now I have Ohtaka's omake extra comics in HD though. I do appreciate Viz’s TL for that. It’s interesting to see cuz officials TLs almost always have more natural sounding liberal English, while fan-Tls are typically more literal and more accurate in meaning.

Yeah this is how I feel about Viz's Magi. I surprisingly like most of it. Tho tbf Magi already has banger dialogue as a story/narrative, so it explains it. You can’t really ruin goated text unless you translate it really badly.

The way some lines are translated is just grrr though. It's fun to see Magi translated in more liberal English and I like it. It's generally fine. But yeah, as you said, Cinna, it's distanced from the OG text in terms of the meaning. I like how we have access to the high quality scans of Ohtaka's art for seeing details. The typesetting and fonts are better.

But I prefer the fan TL cuz it's closer to the OG text and more accurate in meaning. And I prefer the wording and prose tbh

Also the other thing is that EN official TLs usually have to shorten the length of the lines so it can fit within the speech bubbles (which is understandable). They get the point across fine, but lose the full context of dialogue lines. But I like reading good fan-TLs cuz they usually give me the full context that the original text intended.

In YGO GX, when Yubel, the agender Duel Monster who wants to "take back Judai," possesses Johan, and duels Judai, they say, "You're actually aching with someone you love… How come you weren't this serious when I was the one involved?"

And in the series it explicitly spells out that Yubel acknowledges that the "love that Judai gave to her past self/reincarnation is now for Johan."

But YGO GX still goes the cheap route of not confirming any ships/not going with any canon ships, not with Johan, or Asuka who is the token femme love interest.

Please help okay so the problem is "Let P be the set of all people who have ever lived and define a relation R on P as follows: for every r and s that are elements or P, rRs <-> r is an ancestor of s or r =s. Is R a partial order relation? Prove or give a counter example." It's definitely reflexive ince when s=r then s=r which is true. It isn't symmetrical since that would be weird as hell, I mean a grandparent cannot be the grandchild of their own grandchild that would fuck up the family tree even more than the DSMPs but like, how do I prove that mathematically? Like, if rRs and sRr then r = s but "if person A is either a grandparent or the same person as person B and person B is either the grandparent or the same person as person A then person A is person B" just feels like a weird sentence.

Okay i actually have no clue on how tumblr works (hope I'm doing this right lmao) but I'm writing my first fic (I still can't really move on from orv so I decided to make my own content lol.), I really love your writing style, do you have any tips??

Hmmmm tips tips tips tips.... First of all I’m really flattered that you like my writing enough to ask me about it! I’ll try to give my best answer... I think that I used to read a lot of people’s “writing tips” but ultimately I ended up not really understanding them until I started writing a lot? Either way it’s fun to read how other authors think... It’s really cool that you’re writing your first fic and you thought to come to me... did I already say that? Okay long post under the cut.

I don’t think this will be all that helpful, but this is just things that I think about if that’s interesting!

For me a lot of writing is like struggling with motivation (I have ADHD so that’s probs why), I really have to pace myself while writing because I can’t just force myself to do it. If I go in every day and think “I have to write today I’m not doing anything so I should be writing” I can get burnt out really easily, even if I really like the thing I’m writing and know how it’s supposed to go. So one of my big things is that when I’m not thinking about writing I’m not thinking about writing. that gives my brain a break and refreshes me when I get back to my google document.

Something I’ve also struggled with having to remember is that there’s like. Never a perfect way to write. What I end up doing is thinking up ideas and fragments and sentences in my head and the very moment I think of something I like I have to write it down in my notes app. Most of my writing process ends up being like. Filling in the blanks and connecting the dots between scene fragments. 

For fics in particular I’d also just recommend rereading your favorite parts of the og work! I’m the kind of person who has a pretty good reading memory, so people may have noticed that I include a lot of little details referencing the text in my fic. Just reading the work kind of helps you remember the voices of the character and the style of the narration, and if you just like. internalize it. you can probably replicate it pretty well if you wanted to.

OKAY I say that but don’t worry too much about replicating things in the og work perfectly. I find that a lot of times when I’m writing I’m inserting a lot of personal touches and putting things that are a part of me in the work. Writing is always going to be like. an extension of your voice, no matter what you’re writing. I think that when I heard about stuff like that from authors in the past I was always like. What? I’m not writing about things that happened to me. I’m writing about grown adult men having emotional issues, silly. But there’s like a lot more nuance to writing about yourself, I guess. Like you don’t have to have like a self insert or be projecting onto a character to have yourself reflected in something you’ve written.

I’d say that like, whatever you write as your first fic is going to be lovely, but when you grow up as a writer and look back on it, you’re not going to remember who you were when you wrote it. I think that’s why a lot of people look back on their first works and are like “I can’t believe I wrote that, what was I thinking, cringe cringe cringe ugh.” Like I definitely do that sometimes, but I’ve found that the old work I’m happiest with nowadays is the stuff where I can recognize myself in it, even if I’m not in that fandom anymore or if there’s old jokes or typos I don’t remember making. 

With that being said, I’m the kind of person who always gives myself a mission statement when I’m writing. I sort of mentally go, okay, I’m writing this kind of thing, and this is why I’m writing it. It can be something like oh I’m writing this fluff piece because I love this character and wish they had a happier ending, or  oh I want to write this multi chapter fic exploring an issue touched on in the original work but I feel like with my own experiences I could expand on it more than the author did. Just something that tells me why it is important to me to write this thing when I’m writing it.

AAAH I feel like I made that sound more dramatic than it really is, that’s just how I think I guess. I’m the kind of guy where its like things need to have like MEANING to me when I do them. I’m dramatic and gay and that’s my personality I guess 😔.

Hmmm maybe it’s also my BIGGEST writing tip tho. Like kind of just thinking things through when you’re writing is pretty important. When I was first learning to write at all (talking about baby baby me here this is like sort of a side tangent sorry) I think that a lot of times I would copy phrases and developments that I had liked in things that I had read without really fully considering why I would include those things other than the fact that that was just what I thought writing was. It’s important to consider what importance every scene and sentence has to do with the flow of the story. Are they just things that are happening, or is there a reason that the audience needs to know these things? The weight of your words should have some sort of consequence as a result of you writing them. Are you telling the audience information they need to know? Is it about how the character feels? What does this say about the character? Etc.

I suppose that’s sort of my own writing style. You’ll probably notice that I don’t write a lot of descriptive prose if you read my fic. The thing about me is that I never want to write something that makes my audience question why they’re reading it, I guess. I’m sort of self conscious and think about the reading experience a lot. All of the things I choose to describe are usually so that the reader can understand where people are in the scene and what emotions they are having. There’s a lot of emphasis that I put in like. A reader’s ability to read into things, which works against me sometimes because I’m not always certain if people picked up on different things that I put a lot of thought into (the curse of being seen... sob).

ALSO use paragraph breaks. In my first fic (that I’m not going to tell anyone what is even though its on ao3 because im shy) the thing I always regret the MOST is that there are big chunky paragraphs that are hard to read through at the start. Like my eyes get lost. I mentioned I have ADHD before but even though I like. physically can’t read a big chunky paragraph I will always write them that way if left to my own devices. Paragraph breaks don’t have to just be broken up by dialogue they can be wherever you feel like doing them. You need a lot of them. This post should probably have more of them... oh my god it’s so long...

OKAY FOR REAL THOUGH IF YOU COULDN”T SLOG THROUGHT THE REST OF THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT TIP IS RIGHT HERE: 

JUST LET YOURSELF WRITE

I have a lot of like. academic trauma, so maybe this is just me, but the reason I didn’t write fic until I was like 16 was because I was always really scared that whatever I wrote wouldn’t be good enough for some impossible standard I was setting for myself. I was always telling myself that I had certain bad writing habits or that I was terrible for never being able to focus on things for very long and all of my projects were doomed to failure before I even started. But then I wrote my first like 8 chapter fic in the summer of my junior year and I was like... oh. that wasn’t so bad. Like. It’s okay to know your limits, but you don’t really know��them until you start writing. Like I wrote an 8 chapter fic, and then a few one shots, and then I tried to take on a very complicated project that ended up being over 40 chapters and I had to put it down because I just wasn’t really at the writing level to finish it. I would advise against writing fics that take so long to write that you start hating the way you wrote the first chapter, basically lol. Know how whatever you’re writing is supposed to begin and end before you start writing it.

Nowadays I always have like. plot outlines in my head when I start a fic. Like okay this needs to happen here this needs to happen here etc. I like making lists if it seems to overwhelming when I’m writing something long, just to organize my thoughts.

* even if we go with the defence that ‘showing a gay bashing is important! bc it’s realistic!’, there was no need to end the clip/episode the way they did, with them lying semi unconscious on the ground. and then NOTHING for 12 hours. you wanna show how bad homophobia can get, so bad that it can turn violent? cool, don’t show it in detail and at such a length. show them interacting, holding each other and making their way home together. show a late night text b/w them asking each other if they got home ok. the fact that they just left them there and didn’t show anything for 12 hours?? ----> drama, angst, shock value

* why weren’t they together this morning??? they were planning to go back to robbe’s, the TRAUMATIZING attack happened, and they were like....yeah you know what, instead of comforting each other and healing together, let’s just go our separate ways in the dark all alone, spend the night alone with our aches and our happy thoughts, makes sense!

* how did they not need to go to the hospital??? you show them getting the beating of a lifetime, leave them lying on the ground semi unconscious, but they manage to come out of it with only a few cuts and bruises?? realistic.

* they went through a violent traumatizing homophobic attack, and less than 24 hours they go out to party, as if nothing ever happened? again, love the realism.

* sander tells robbe he loves him and that they have each other. 9 hours later he’s kissing britt.... ????????? not only does that make NO SENSE, this is also incredibly BAD WRITING. you can’t have a violent GAY BASHING one day, and have the typical high school drama less than 24 hours later! you can’t have angst on angst on angst w/o letting your characters and the story itself BREATH! gay bashing is SERIOUS BUSINESS, if you decided to go down that road, the least you could do is let your characters - who are supposed to be in love and the greatest love story ever told - HEAL TOGETHER. GO THROUGH IT TOGETHER. BE THERE FOR EACH OTHER. you don’t LITERALLY kick someone (robbe) when they’re down, just to immediately kick him again???? that’s fucked up, man. and yeah, i’m suuuuure sander will have a good explanation and everything will make sense later on and we can brush it off and forget it ever happened, but 1. you don’t do this storyline immediately after beating up your characters wtf 2. it doesn’t matter if it’ll make sense later, bc it doesn’t make sense NOW. clearly something happened b/w then (when they talked and sander said ilu) and now (kissing britt at the party), but WE HAVEN’T BEEN SHOWN ANY OF IT. it’s NOT THE SAME as og bc in og we SAW what happened to drive even away from isak, we saw isak make that comment - some people might not have realized that was the trigger (others did tho!!!), but it was THERE and it was obvious AFTERWARDS. here??? you can keep watching and rewatching, but NOTHING we’ve seen with our own two eyes could’ve possibly triggered this behavior in sander, bc robbe didn’t say or do anything wrong! i’ve seen theories that maybe britt said something to him, maybe he’s doing this to protect robbe from getting hurt again (which is bs bc unlike isak who can find someone who’s not mentally ill, robbe can’t find someone who’s not a guy bc, well, he’s gay?? then what are you protecting him from exactly??) - it’s all possible, but the point remains that we’ve been shown none of it, we’re COMPLETELY in the dark, and this is just another PLOT TWIST for SHOCK VALUE. not to mention!!! that at least og had even text isak that he needed a break. wtfock went from an ‘I LOVE YOU’ to NOT A WORD, not even a little heads up, to robbe. and if that’s not bad enough, THE IG POSTS. even if robbe hadn’t gone to the party and seen them kiss, he would’ve seen and found out about it from the ig posts. spare some break up text first at least??? this was a season long, well planned and well executed storyline in og. in wtfock there is no cohesive narrative, no coherent stroytelling. it’s just one random angsty clip after the other, with viewers being asked to fill in the blanks themselves based on what they know from og, or their own creative minds. there is no subtle slow build up to things, it’s just a trashy cw teen drama. (which can be enjoyable! but they’re light years away from being skam). *eta: also!!! THE CONTEXT in which these happened! the fact that sander does THIS to robbe after a VIOLENT HOMOPHOBIC ATTACK makes him look so much shittier than even ever did.....

* the end of that clip.....thought we’d save the suicide allusions (won’t be surprised if it’s an actual attempt) for sander in ep 8/9, but always trust wtfock to be the little overachiever it is and already do it with robbe in ep 6!

* is noor still considered to be the nicest and best emma, or.....?

* it’s funny bc this morning i was legit surprised they not only showed sander, but also showed him and robbe be cute together. it was very optimistic, when based on the past i totally expected one of them to pull away from the other immediately. i was like, damn! finally wtfock got something right! they’re actually gonna let them deal with this aftermath *together*, at least for the next couple of days (bc y’know, asking for more than 2 days of happiness in wtfock’s economy is unrealistic). silly me for even expecting those 2 days....if there’s anything consistent with wtfock, it’s that it’s ALWAYS gonna be ANGST ANGST ANGST, with maybe a day of some wholesomeness once a week. there is no balance. there is no pacing. there is no subtlety. and if you think THIS is rock bottom?? just remember 1. this is wtfock 2. there are FIVE episodes left.

1. Ik Ik "haha how cringe are you" of me to say, but honestly? Homestuck. Homestuck helped me in a time of need and when i so desperately wanted something to latch onto. Finally, I caved into my friends telling me to read it-- and it's been a blast!! The epilogues / hs^2 make me feel kinda sad though, because so much of what I loved about the original was yeeted through the nine circles of hell and into the trash. I love Y/ffany's (I call her Yippi tho) design, the art is really pretty at times, Harry is a major dork, I LIVE for seeing Vrissy bc honestly?? Her design is 10/10, very early 2000s emo style and I also live for that. Tavros is cute and a nerd and I think that's swell!

But in terms of story and how any of this happens, it makes me sad to see it happen. If Vriska could return as Vrissy, why not OTHER beta trolls? Where's my Eridan fish man, writers?? Give me the boy or perish by my fury.

I remember watching Flightfootwarrior's "I Will Not Bow" Scourge amv for HOurs and having no clue what was happening, but all these edgy kitties were KITTIES! It's introduced me to a lot of music I still listen to to this very day (Imagine Dragons, Young/the entirety of Hollywood Undead, Breaking Benjamin). And yknow what?? This new arc is absolute chaos, but in the good way.

I'm an "OG Fan". I prefer the first arc, The Prophecies Begin, to almost any of the other arcs. I just could never get into the other arcs-- not to say I haven't read them, I HAVE and the Fire Scene was probably one of my favorite moments beside grumpy Jaypaw, god complex Lionblaze, and fear the gods Hollypaw. I thought the build-up for it was SUPER satisfying. Gray Wing is my baby and I fully embellish in the Gray Wing is Silverpelt theory.

This new arc is definitely something new for the universe. While I didn't read aVoS (but I may do that if i can find the files for it), and so I don't know the major events of it other than what I've seen M.A.P.'s (Multi-Animator Projects, for clarification,,, bc unfortunately that term is also something disgusting). There's fucking cat possession and all the Clans questioning their belief system, yo. Shit be on fire.

Also the Imposter is 100% Ashfur, that's canon now, yeah??? Also im sorry but fuck Root x Bristle that's the dumbest shit I have ever seen. Give me Root x Shadow or face the wrath of my dragon plushies.

3. As much as I hate the author,,,,, Harry Potter. It's been a major part of my life for as long as I can remember. I can never really remember why, but I've always just loved it- the movies, the books, the extra little merch that would pop up in my local Walmart. Of course my favorite character is Draco Malfoy. I could go on and on and ON about how I think his character arc was SHIT and JKR didn't have the balls to make him a confident gay man that was always implied through the text (at least, my lesbian ass thought it was implied but i may just be projecting, idk). I could ramble about Draco for HOURS and what I think his character SHOULD have been and how his parents are horrible (more specifically, Lucius bc Narcissa [?] Actually showed a few good moments), and a child should never have to pay for their parents sins.

Oh noo, Draco's a villain because he's a victim of major abuse and peer pressure? He's a villain because a literal child can be horrible and they'll always always always stay as a horrible little fiend?? Fuck that. He's a child.

Unlike manchild grease pan Snape, who was a racist piece of shit and shouldn't have became a fucking school teacher but it's okay because he was ~~~in love~~~. No, fuck you, he was a creep. James Potter n Co may have been a little posh bitch to you, Snape, but that's no fucking excuse to continue to bluntly be a little cunt all the way into adulthood. You're an adult who flatly changed your PATRONUS to imitate Lily's. You have no excuse. And Harry went and named his child after you LIKE JESUS CHRIST, DID RON'S SISTER NOT HAVE A SAY IN THE NAMES TOO?????

I also fully adore the idea that Muggles can run into Hogwarts and their patronus can 100% be a made up, fantasy creature. Imagine you learn the patronus spell and suddenly fucking ARCEUS comes from your wand. Imagine learning the spell and CHTULU (i did not spell that right but im so tired) comes from your wand-- an entire ass fucking Lovecraftian, Eldrith horror is just the embodiment of you. What if it was a fucking Homestuck character like Vriska? How fucking METAL would that be?? Hskajssowjjsjs get on it fandom.

4. Hee hee very evident by my url but Pokemon is another major thing of mine. While vespiquen isn't my favorite (that title goes to Hydreigon), it is definitely up there!

I've ALWAYS enjoyed the idea of Pokemon. You run around, training up these fight monsters and collecting them. I remember playing my sister's Ruby version on her flip-up Gameboy. I couldn't even read but I ran around catching god only knows how many of the same pokemon wherever she was. Apparently, I had fought for hours in the same area and leveled her Blaziken up to lvl 50 something and left her lvl 30s in the dust LMAO.

I got my first game when it was Pearl/Diamond. It was Pearl, and it still holds a very fond place in my heart. I could barely read, I could barely write-- I had named my Turtwig something along the lines of "MmorpHy" and my player boy "ZbsibJ". Yes I remember the names slightly. I really didn't get far-- I barely got to the first gym but I was just so happy to play it.

I eventually lost the game, as a 5 year old would do, but I can still vividly remember what was happening when the game arrived. I had just came back from the dentist and was quite tired from fighting the dentist bc I was super scared. Mom suddenly handed me a box and said it was mine-- my overseas (at that time) dad had bought me Pearl and my sister Diamond, because I lost my shit about it when he visited one time.

Well, tdlr, I played it for about five minutes while struggling to stay awake against the loopy gas they made me take. I fell asleep listening to Twinleaf Town's soundtrack. Every time I play a rom of Pearl and I get to where the player's house fades in and I hear that first tune of the song, I get a huge smile on my face and cry-- as.. Weird as it sounds.

A few years later, I had gotten Pokemon Black bc I liked Reshiram on the cover. Now, this one I could actually READ when playing, but I don't remember a lot of things about it. I probably lost this one too, as a 8/9 year old would do. I DO remember, I chose Snivy and my sister chose Tepig (hrmm there's a theme here of grass/fire goin on......) and vibing to the music. I was so amazed by the sprites moving, I just kept getting into encounters to see the sprites move (oh boy, no one tell younger 7-9 y/o me about Zelda......oh wait....)

Playing Pokemon NOW, as a 17 year old """gifted""" chick, I stil have very fond memories. I recently beat Pokemon Black again and GOD the OTS SLAPS. I fucking adore the soundtrack-- the track that plays when you battle a trainer, the low health dings being turned into a legit song that also slaps, the battle! gym leader themes-- and oh my gOd, the legendary theme is amazing? It really tells you just how glorious these pokemon are supposed to be. It's not intimidating like Groudon/Kyroge/Rayquaza's themes. It's not action packed like Palkia/Dialga's is, it's not filled with tension like Giratina/Arceus's is-- but it radiates the GLORY that the beasts portray. And I live for that. (Also, Kyurem's version is my favorite because it glitches in the beginning and that's rly cool)

P/D/P and BW/BW2's stories, imo, are some of the greatest ones. Yeahhh, US/USUM's is cool and I haven't played XY nor SwSh-- but the ones I can find memorable are PDP and BW/BW2. I love N. I love Barry. They're my sons. Ghetsis is fucking terrifying, Cyrus needs a hug. Giratina scared the piss out of me when I was younger, which was NOT helped by Giratina and The Sky Warrior.

I think my favorite movies are the gen 4 ones. The Rise of Darkrai having a tear-jerking theme for such a mysterious pokemon (i still tear up when i hear Ocarion), Giratina being spiteful is a mood and Shaymin was cute, Arceus being angry is also a mood. Yeah, Pokemon 4Ever made me cry my eyes out over Celebi, Mewtwo Returns made me again cry because Mewtwo accepting who he is, I remember how vastly different the BW movies are-

I just. I have a lot of memories with the series, even if Gamefreak and Nintendo kinda do the series dirty a lot (your top-grossing thing and you made That monstrosity for the Switch? How dare you.). It's comforting to be stressed and pull up my roms for the games and to play them. Mystery Dungeon is incredibly fun to play, Pokemon Ranger is really fun with the concept (Shadows of Almia continues to kick my ass to this very day and FUCK the Jungle Relic, I hate the Water Challenge fucking gyarados bullshit). I remember the pokemon I got for MD (I got Time, my sis got Darkness) was Mudkip, if that is any help.

I love my little fictional pixel monsters.

5. Yup, someone told tiny 7-9 y/o me about console games. The legend of Zelda. My first Zelda game was Twilight Princess on the Wii and BOY did I play the fucking SHIT out of that game.

Honestly, looking back and looking at playthroughs now-- I still love TP. Twilight Princess is still one of my top favorite Zelda games-- yes, even after playing OoT, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, Skyward Sword, the anniversary four swords edition for the DS where you could play by yourself (Nintendo pls bring that back, I don't have friends to play it with ;-;), Phantom Hourglass- ect.

Something about Twilight Princess grabbed me by the head and yeeted me into the world. I can remember playing it for hours with little to no breaks. I, a tiny 9 y/o, had gotten the hang of the controllers and managed to get past the tutorial quite easily. And then, I was launched into the game and I wasn't stopping for NOTHING. Mom and Dad would have to force me to save and get off to go and eat dinner. THAT sucked.

I had done everything on my own up until the first temple, the forest temple. Not where/when you saved the dumb kid, but when you were saving the spirit's light. Theeeeeeennn I got stuck on the fucking Forest Temple for deadass six months straight. I'd play for hours, running around in circles, unable to figure out where to go, and because I didn't grasp the temple's purpose of being that way- I'd get angry and get off. It wasn't until dad looked up a walkthrough and talked me through what I was supposed to do that I learned how to get through temples.

I had gotten to the last little fight with Ganondorf before the Wii broke and i could no longer play. Despite the Wii being broke and we got rid of it, I was ADAMANT on keeping the game, and I kept that game for YEARS. It was an original copy out of a sealed box, and I eventually lost it when I left it accidentally at my now ex-friend's house.

She had a Wii and I went "hey I have a Wii game!" And I brought my Zelda over. Worst fucking choice of my goddamn life. Mom called me to come home and said I couldn't sleep over like the original plan was, and that was it. My ex-friend stashed my Zelda and I never saw it again. And, even if I wanted to-- I couldn't get it back, which makes me upset. We had a BAD falling out. She likely doesn't even remember it's there, or sold it to the local game junkie kid who buys ALL games.

But I still love the game. Midna was amazing, and I loved how snarky she was and she has a very cute design! The game's OST is fucking phenomenal. Midna's Desperate Hour makes me cry bc goddamn it really sells how serious that situation is. I love Hyrule Field's theme in this game. I love the Twilight Realm's song. Zant was fucking hilariously scary. Ganondorf's design in this game scared the piss out of me when I was younger.

Midna and this game's Link and Zelda are def my favorites. Yeah yeah, Sheik is cool and all I Guess but dhsushwishs Midna holds the special place in my heart. She was totally my gay awakening BUT

For other game antagonists, I adore Ghirahim-- let's go you funky little queer-coded villain. Skull Kid was great, I love the entire dynamic of him. Prankster lost soul stumbles upon Majora's Mask and the mask makes him act out due to powers-- which, I actually took very heavy inspiration from for one of my OCs. The moon falling to Hyrule was a fucking terrifying looming threat.

But the game series holds a place, and I've yet to be able to play BoTW-- although, I'm fairly certain I'll like it. The playthroughs I've watched of it are all fairly decent! I just. Gotta save up enough money to buy it haha.

Dang guess I gotta go watch a Twilight Princess playthrough again.

Ouch. I love Lucas, but that was some prime bullshit.

Overall clip felt rushed but it worked for me.

Lucas' internalized homophobia has teeth, it really goes deeper than Isak's. I always felt that the cliches Isak threw out were offensive but they spoke more of ignorance and watching too much Narcos and other macho cliche stuff. But what Lucas said, the words he used, they were much more violent, and it speaks of a more self-aware type of self loathing. It was also much more of a direct attack on the sexuality itself, that stuff he said about 'talking abt how many d*cks you sucked' and 'throwing d*ck shaped confetti' and shit. And it reminds me of stuff i've heard myself when I came out - it's fine if you're lgbt as long as you're not too loud about it, not too openly sexual, not too political or angry or revendicative. The cliche of the 'folle' is a specifically French slur referring to a caricature of gay men in the media shown as crazy, over the top, effeminate, promiscuous, too much, pathetic, ridiculous, and often predatory, too, someone 'normal' men are right to be afraid/and or disgusted by, and who is generally the butt of terrible jokes.

I wish they'd made Mika a bit more likeable. But he is absolutely justified in his anger. Even if they don't always get along, he's just trying to help, and Lucas is clearly targeting him too, what with the grindr comment. His insta post was extra powerful, even though I wish they'd put the bit about courage being unrelated to cliches of masculinity in the actual clip.

In the OG Eskild told Isak not to diss those guys until he had the same courage to be open about who he was. Here, however, Mika directly accuses Lucas of being part of the problem. And when we see the shit he pulled with Chloe, his misogynistic comments, and now this...it's kind of true. I'm starting to understand why Mika and Lucas aren't closer. He might not have been this sharp towards an actual mentor, and I have the feeling he probably distanced himself from Mika because he didn't want to be 'like him'. And he might have had to realise shit sooner if he had had a gay role model around he actually liked. So I guess they're just sharpening the contrasts. And Lucas' eyeroll insta post feels like the message hasn't sunk in totally yet.

I really feel like they're in a position to take a scalpel to the underbelly of all the latent homophobia in French culture, the one that hides behind 'tolerance'. What Lucas says felt very realistic to me. But he's got a lot of growing up to do, right now, because that shit is toxic.

first of all i gotta say I’m not a huge fan of the “matteo is even” theory/take. I admit i said it at first too, but at this point it’s clear (at least imo) that Matteo and David are their own characters with some of both Isak’s and Even’s characteristics.

Now to your question: I’m honestly at a loss as to what’s gonna happen. I can’t really see Matteo going back with Sara, but then again we know he does care about her as a person and that she can be very... captivating... plus we all know how very badly matteo seeks intimacy. It all depends on what happened beforehand aka if something happens that makes David retreat (like Isak’s crazy people comments and Even’s text about things going too fast/needing more time) or something that hurts Matteo so much that he (tries so?) get back with Sara (tho David is such a sweet and caring person that I can’t see him making hurtful comments about MIs).

I honestly hope Matteo won’t make any transphobic comments or whatever. But he has also proven to have put his foot in his mouth at times (”Why can’t they be gay and normal?”), so it’s definitely possible.

But anyway, I love how unpredictable Druck is atm. I love how we all lose our minds but know, at the same time, that in the very end, all will be good. I also have hope that if David is trans and it’ll come into play in the story, the druck writers will handle the topic with care, seeing as their worked together with Noah Steinkamp (who advocated for a trans GerEven since s1) and also have Lukas on their team. I just can’t see both of them being okay if the storyline wasn’t going to be handled with respect.

Idek how to put the rest of my thoughts into words, urgh. My mind is a mess. So some random thoughts to end this answer: 1) I can see Leonie outing Matteo more than Sara bc Leonie is a force to be reckoned with 2) Druck is doing exactly what a remake should do: switching stuff up and keeping us on the edge of our seats 3) Everything will be a 100 times worse than OG bc druck is a messy bitch and I can totally see them leaving us hanging for two weeks after 3x05 because of the easter school holidays in Berlin (ONE FEAR) 4) i really really really want David to be trans simply bc it’s great representation and trans teens deserve it!!!!

Skamita.S02.E09.

I just watched the whole episode together and wow another 10/10

The first clip that we got was the one where he talked with Maddalena and oh god was that heartbreaking. I could feel Martino's pain and he was crying and all that he wanted was to know if Nico was alright and he wanted to see him. He kept asking Maddalena how he was and if he could see him. Really heartbreaking clip, I loved it. I loved that instead that on the phone we got a face to face conversation, it was even sadder like this.

Then we got the beautiful clip with Mamma Rametta (even tho that's not her surname). Federico acting, like in the last clip, was phenomenal. When he screams at his mum it felt so real and raw and you could hear that he was on the verge of crying. The fact that we got more interactions with the parents in skam italia is great, because that's how life is, and because I love seeing parent/child interactions. When Marti and his mum were both on the ground talking to each other was perfect, not only because she told him how important she is to him, not only because she told him that she doesn't care that he's gay, but also because the door between them kind of symbolises their relationship. They are connected anymore, they keep fighting, but even with "a door between them" they can still talk and get better, it doesn't have to be all bed, things can get better.

We then got the clip with the boys. And if a clip has I contrabbandieri in it it's already a good clip. As you know I love their relationship more than any other, and I love that Martino talks to them and tells them what is going on in his life. I love how supportive they are and how they are always trying to help. (A special mention to Elia that doesn't talk about things that he knows nothing about). I loved that they went to the phycologist, because it perpetuates the idea that it's normal to seek help from professionals because that's what they are here for. (Special mention to Luca that knows that Maddalena "ha solo la gelosia in culo"). And the exercise that they did was super cute. The whole clip was also a parallel with the one where he went there alone, while now he has his friends in who he can lean on.

We got the clip where he talks with his father on the phone and again, I have to applaud Federico for his acting. The clip was really sad because it feels like what Martino's father is saying is that it's not appropriate to be gay in front of a kid, and it's embarrassing if his son brings a boyfriend to a dinner with his new partner. And you could see how that fucking broke Martino, he was devastated by that.

And then we got the last clip. Firstly we have to applaud Skam Italia for being able to reinvent the show, not only this clip, and that's really evident in this episode , where basically all the clips were really different from the original while still maintaining the same plot line. We all know how important and iconic was the O Helga Natt in the original, it's one of my favourite scenes ever, and that's why I have really high expectations for this clip. I felt disappointed in the reunion moment because, emotionally, it wasn't as strong as original but that doesn't mean that it was. The clip was great and I loved it, I just prefer the original because I'm a sucker for pain. If I didn't have nothing to compare it to this clip would have been perfect, because it is. I just personally prefer how more dramatic the og clip was how much it made me feel. Also, I LOVED the beginning of the clip, I loved that Marti was watching his father being happy with his new family, that he isn't really a part of (yet, you never know what will happen). It was sad and beautiful. And the text that he recived from Nico was absolutely beautiful. I loved it to death. Perfect.

So yeah, in conclusion skam italia is great because it's able to change things and make them unique the show and not just a copy paste of another show.

here’s my big Opinions On Arrested Development Season 5 B post. sorry if readmores break bc this post is Long.

first off let me say WOWie i watched like all of this way faster than i meant to. oops!

so 5b was OVERALL pretty good IMO. i’mma talk about my issues with it first tho

i think this season would have benefited majorly from being released in 1 wave instead of 2. i won’t pretend to know the reasons behind splitting the season and i don’t care enough to DIG for it y’know? but the mythology of AD and the storylines in the netflix seasons are so convoluted that coming back to this season after just like... 6 months i think (i think i caught up in sept/october?) was a bit tough. it’ll definitely benefit from a rewatch (like all the seasons do TBH) but whew doggie it’s a lot. in typical AD flashback-forward style it does a pretty good job of like, reminding you of various plot points from before tho.

secondly, tobias is insufferable. i think he was fine pre-season 5. i don’t think i cared much for him past season 2 but like i could get a few chuckles and his storyline in s4 while dark was bearable. this season it was just... terrible. murphybrown was the funniest parts of his segments man. i think these reddit comments sum it up:

and yeah... i mean the show is dark and based off of black comedy like 90% of the time I Get It but like debrie’s s5 stuff wasn’t funny. 

another thing is general consensus is that the editing/ADR of this season is terrible. and yeah, it is. not really a problem that i had with the season so much as acknowledging a problem other people had. to be fair to the show the OG seasons were pretty rough with this too, AND filming the netflix seasons has been a disaster apparently wrt trying to get around everyone’s schedules and whatnot. anyways. not a big problem i don’t really care about it

IN MY ONION... season 3 of AD is the worst fucking season. i outright hate some of it, dislike a lot of it, and like a bit of it. so like i have no problems with the way s5 has gone because it is not season 3 LOL. anyways. onto the good stuff

without being too spoiler-y the seasons (series?) finale had a callback that must be at least 6 years in the making as the footage is from season 4 and not like green-screened etc. and god it was so worth it.

season 5 made me laugh with pretty much every episode, even w/ how ... dark ... some of it got lol. gay gob (bi gob?) is like, the highlight of the series for me. gob has always been My Fave (actually tied with lucille but w/e) but i think his character got real good around s4/s5. as usual i don’t care about george sr. or oscar bc like, You Know. but i think generally the other character save those two and tobias were really good this season! i even sometimes enjoyed when michael was on the screen!

also like, somehow, they made drawing the bluth family tree 20394x more difficult than previously thought which is such a feat.

i know this seasons suffered from a lot of rewrites (thus the bad ADR and convoluted storylines) but like... i think it came out decent. and was wrapped up rather nicely save for that NEXT TIME ON ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT bit in the finale (b...buster..) so... wig! i think the finale mirrors the s3 finale in a lot of ways (michael and george michael riding into the sunset to maybe have a good life apart from the rest of the bluths vs every other bluth having a good time together until something goes terribly wrong) and that’s not a bad thing imo. for a show that has callbacks and stupid foreshadowing and visual gags that don’t tie in till years down the road... where the plot is always just a roundabout of these terrible people doing terrible things and trying to deal with it... doesn’t it make sense that the end is roundabout too? whatever

all in all if this is the last season (which i doubt s6 will ever happen so ... yeah) i think it’s a fair sendoff to a dumb show that i really like. i don’t think it was disappointing, i don’t think it was bad. i think it was a fun time with a lotta laffs, a few mysteries, and too many tobias scenes.
