Still loving Red White and Royal Blue. Multifandom blog, reblogging whichever shows I'm watching at the time, or people I like, also animals being cute. DICHEN LACHMAN as Gemma in S2E7: “Chikhai Bardo”

The most disturbing thing in all of Severance was watching Gemma fight back, strike down the doctor, run from the nurse, fight to get free…. Only to transform into the timid Ms Casey who can be sent back to her undoing with only a polite smile and firm words from Mr Milchick. Gemma would have rushed him, kicked him, bit him, done anything to get past him. But Ms Casey can’t even finish a sentence before Mr Milchick interrupts her. She’s not even allowed to voice a thought. And she goes meekly back to a place she knows is bad, even if she can’t remember it.
#what makes her situation so tragic is she literally can never escape#whereas all the other innies become their outies again once they go up the elevator#for her it's the other way around - the outie becomes her innie every time she goes up#and her ms casey innie has no idea what's going on#she's literally stuck there no matter what she does...#severance

Also. How fucking terrifying is Gemma's entire life? Everything that Helly was experiencing in season 1 Gemma is experiencing in every single life. One innie is forever at the dentist. One trapped in this hellish marriage cosplay. One in a constant near-crash scenario. The innies don't get anything else. They don't even get to have their own hair. And Gemma never gets to leave. She comes out of these rooms in pain or fear and never knowing what is happening to her in these rooms. There's no escape for her in any life that she has, except for Ms. Casey, the only innie who's expressed some happiness where she was and the only place where she gets to see Mark, and even then she doesn't know and gets forced back into the elevator. She's stuck in these rooms where these white men are playing these constant mind games with her and beating her down and there's just never a chance of her getting to leave and it's just so painful she is literally just stuck in Hell.

no dentist's office. no writing christmas cards. no taking flights. a world where every pain or minor annoyance is dismissed as your consciousness is replaced with a different version of you. a life without pain, or agitation, or monotony. and conversely, a life full of only that for every version of you who experiences the chores you wished to evade.
forget skipping work or school or birth. try everything. never experience anything that expires a negative emotion. the ideal consciousness sold as a product for the price of a version of you that you'll never meet.
but it doesn't matter. you carry the hurt down with you. in your hands, in your mind, your mouth. the grief mark experiences carried into his innie, gemma feeling the pain she experienced in the rooms even after she's been severed.
it doesn't matter. you carry it with you.

oh so you thought existing only to perform a soulless office job was bad. how about existing only to go to the dentist. how about existing only in planes. how about existing only to perform stupid and repetitive yet socially expected tasks. how about existing only to withstand every unpleasant thing that somebody else decided to go without

this has been said before but oh god mark's avoidant tendencies and how he runs from grief instead of processing it thoroughly so much so that it causes him to be distant from gemma when they lost the baby up till gemma's accident which likely caused him to feel even more anguish over how distant he's been in the last moments of gemma's life and worsens the grief which he then runs from again till he runs off towards lumon to avoid it all completely
soul-crushing.

“There’s a whole backstory there that is just kind of alluded to, but it’s basically, the idea is that Mark came in and he was inexplicably better at refining the files than others were, at least for that first file that he worked on, which was called Allentown.” – Dan Erickson
