Lying awake in bed bc I had caffeine and that means I do not sleep tn. Thinking about Genesis Rhapsodos and Achilles again
So kleos aphthiton (undying fame) is a Homeric innovation right. Didn’t appear before the Iliad and Achilles as far as we have evidence of. It’s a very Achillles thing, to strive so hard against the natural order, against death, to attempt to have fame that will never die. Fame is normally expected to be something that fades and dies, but Achilles dreams bigger than that. He wants to look the gods of his world in the eyes and become something like them, something that has a share of their power.
And then you have Genesis, whose fame is great but not quite undying, who is struggling with all he has against the natural order. He wants to tear down the gods that have used him like a puppet on a string, and he wants to be equals with the god those gods have set up as a puppet like him and yet above. He wants to live so badly—if only he knew that Achilles had to die to achieve his undying fame.
Achilles dies, and achieves his immortality of story. Genesis lives, and his story is mostly forgotten. Achilles lost Patroclus, but joined him again in the afterlife. Genesis lost Angeal and Sephiroth, and yet he is forced to live on without them. Which is the worse fate, I wonder?

Trying super hard to come up with a good question and this is the best I got I fear
Four books? ( One of your all time favourites , one you really really want to read, one that fundamentally changed you and one you'll never stop recommending) ( book series are also good)
Morninggg yeah questions can be really hardbut this is a good one
let's see....mh...
1. This one is tough but I'd probably say All For The Game, I've read it about 6 to 7 times in the past 7 years or so years, something about it just hits right home
2. ...does the Odyssey count? I currently have a digital version and a german translation from 1939 that i found in an antiquity store but i wanna get an english hardcover version of both the odyseey and the illiad eventually-
3. Lord of the rings/tolkiens universe changed me and helped me through my first years of teen angst and gave me a home during a time where we just recently moved and all that
4. Mmmhhh... That changes honestly depending on what im currently obssesed with and who it asking me for it, but probably currently Captive Prince series, the worldbuilding is tough (i do recommend reading the TWs before unless you're confident in being fine with close to anything, its mostly book one; the other two in comparison are really tame)
BUT THEY'RE SO GOOD the writing is so good, the character's, their dynamic, the tension between them-
Ill add a 5. Because we already have most of my favorite books that i keep rereading and say "Author you've read the most from" because that would be Sarah J Maas, esp the Throne Of Glass series rly also touches smth in me and her stories themes of "dreamers brining the hope for a better world" rly touches me
Rb that with your favorites? 😄

I'm not nearly eloquent enough to write a coherent essay about this but the parallels between HAL and dave are fascinating. So here's so rambling about space odyssey
Like. On the one hand you have HAL who knows exactly how important their mission actually is and he is literally testing dave by asking him if he has doubts about the mission. Dave on the other hand fears HAL might geopardize their mission and their crew's safety so he is making the decision to shut HAL down for their own survival so in return HAL decides to kill the crew to guarantee his own survival and the success of the mission. Sacrificing others to survive again comes into play when dave lets go of frank to enter the airlock. What's also interesting is that both of them convert back to an infantile state in the end with dave repeating the song he was taught in the early stages of his programming and dave literally reverting back to an embryo.
Control and how the characters, especially HAL, try to keep it is also very interesting. HAL uses the extent to how human he is perceived to be as a means to gain control. From the very beginning the audience is made to believe how human HAL really is. He is referred to by an anagram that's like a human name, he is literally called another member of the crew, but he is always watching, having total control over all the ship's functions. However, this also makes him suspicious in the eyes of the humans because the same can be said for frank and dave. When we are shown HAL looking at them through his cameras they are almost always looking back at him, putting an enormous pressure on him to perform well, to always be perfect or they might shut him down. So the moment HAL makes a mistake and he chalks it up to "human error" all parties believe it really was his mistake, even an error like this should be impossible for a machine to make. It was a human mistake by a machine that imitates humans to such a degree that mistakes seem plausible and that's what makes dave and frank so scared of how a creature like this might react to having its functions shut down and when it is eventually time to do so HAL once again appeals to dave's perception of him as a person by getting more and more emotional and trying to appeal to his conscience and it's still left beautifully ambiguous whether HAL's actions were out of pure fear and survival instinct or because he was programmed to execute the mission at all costs and simply could not afford any more "human errors"

Oceanic Odyseey has potential.
WAIT WAIT WAIT PLEASE DON'T GO HEAR ME OUT HEAR ME O-
Now, you probably looked at this ask with a raised eyebrow wondering what the fuck I mean by "Oceanic Odyssey has potential" so, allow me to explain.
I feel like Oceanic Odyssey has the potential to take inspiration from many ocean exploration games but I have two in mind that would make the best candidates: Subnautica and ABZU.
ACT 1: Subnautica and its possible influence on the horror in Oceanic Odyssey
Now, what IS Subnautica? Subnautica is an ocean exploration based survival game where the player explores the oceans of a once unknown planet called 4546B located in the Andromeda Galaxy and finds various alien sealife within the planet's oceans. A lot of them are pretty chill but the main thing that Oceanic Odyssey could take inspiration from in terms of horror is Subnautica's leviathans that act as 'bosses' in a way. Here two of the best examples.
Tumblr media
The Reaper Leviathan
This thing could be a pretty big influence in terms of how Finley can possibly jumpscare you as this creature can LITERALLY LUNGE AT YOU. I don't think I need to explain myself any further.
Tumblr media
The Ghost Leviathan
I feel like the anticipation factor of Oceanic Odyssey's horror could easily be influenced by The Ghost Leviathan as you don't see it as often and when it jumpscares you, you almost never see it coming. The Ghost Leviathan more so just creeps around the ocean and amubshes you instead of lunging at you at the first moment it gets which could be a great inspiration for the anticipation parts of Oceanic Odyssey's jumpscares.
ACT 2: ABZU and its influence on Oceanic Odyssey's atmosphere
ABZU is an ocean exploration based adventure game where you take the role of a robot exploring the depths of the ocean and documenting the life within the ocean waters. I feel like in terms of atmosphere (and soundtrack if you really wanna go the distance) could definitely take some inspiration from ABZU as the world and music of this game are absolutely BEAUTIFUL. (Pictures and audio below are from the ABZU game and OST)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
based off of all of this alone, I'm pretty confident to say that ABZU could be a great inspiration for Oceanic Odyssey's atmosphere.
CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
I feel like Oceanic Odyssey has the potential to be scary and absolutely beautiful at the same time. This was just me wanting to get that off my chest so, yea.

Fantasy Month: Epic the Musical
Tumblr media
So we are starting Fantasy Month .....With a bang .We are also starting 2025 with my biggest obsession of 2024 ,Jorge Rivera-Herrans's beautiful concept album :Epic the Musical
In these series of concept albums released from 2022-2024 ,we follow ODysseus (Jorge Rivera-Herrans ),soldier in the Trojan War and King of Ithica ,trained by Athena ,the Goddess of Wisdom (Teagan Early ) as he attempts to return home to his wife Penelope (Anna Lea) and son Telemachus (Miguel Veloso ) but his path is blocked by powerful Gods and vicious monsters ,and Odysseus is pushed to his limits as he desperately tries to make his way hojme
So Epic is a thing due to social media .For several years the creator Jorge Rivera Herrans has made shorts detailing the progress and even went to tik tok to get the performers for the musical. The musical is appropriately based on the Greek Epic, the Odyssey by Homer .This 40 song beheamoth was released as 9 mini albums called Sagas :Specifically Troy Saga ,Cyclops Saga ,Ocean Saga,Crice Saga ,Underworld Saga ,Thunder Saga ,Wisdom Saga , Vengence Saga and finally Ithica Saga .All Sagas have been released ,and yeah if you havent listened to this ,,,,,umm do,go on Spotify or whereever you listen to music ,its pretty damn good
Now full disclosure,I was completely unaware of the musical till a few months ago (I dont use Tiktok),around when the Thunder Saga came out ,stumbling upon the fact there was indeed an Odyssey musical .....And I kind of fell for it instantly .One of the things that got me into Att is the ODyseey ,I read it in High School ,and I would doodle monsters all the time due to it .Its one of my favorite stories so hearing it get this wonderful musical adaptation is dream come true ....The fact it is REALLY GOOD is just the cherry on top
Now heres the thing, the creators do intend to expand on this in some way ,and there are unclear moments in music but are clearer in the streams which has captions and animations for visual aid .....But we will ignor all that cause I think a lot of people will come for the music unaware that theres more stuff.Do stick out the streams.....Also the fan animatics are really good, support youtube animators
Im not really a music expert ,but this musical does a lot of clever things musically ,with each character being rpresented by an instrument , ODysseus being rpresented by a guitar ,Athena being piano, etc .What I find really cool is the Gods and Monsters who are other worldly are rpresented though synthesizers and electronic music ,including Hermes the Messenger of the Gods having this sort of 80's synth pop feel to him .I also like how the first monster they fight, the Cyclops has this heavilly modulated deep scary voice .I also think musically this reall rewards relistens ,cause you notice little themes and parts from cetain songs ,and for me songs I thought were OK got much better on relistens (Im not the biggest fan of Just A Man.....But I teared up when I heard the melody in the final song )
So the cast and characters are hard to talk about cause like a good epic, theres a LOT OF CHARACTERS .Just gonna say .....All the cast is amazing ,giving the drama and the music its due,so heres what Im gonna do......Im gonna split the characters into sections : Encounters ,Antagonists and Protagonist
Also not gonna talk about the Gods who just appear in God Games or the suitors ,they all do great ,theres just not much to say .Also I dont have much to say on the Sirens or Cyclops other then I think its cool Anna Leah and Jorge Rivera-Herrans,voice monsters and the two most important characters
Encounters are the various random beings Odyssues meets on his journey
Aeolus-is the Wind God ,and I love Kira Stone's bubbly yet mischevious take.Keep Your Friends Close is a a highly underrated song in my oppinion
Circe :Is the most complicated of the foes Odyssus meets ,intially starting as an antagonist but becoming an ally ,I think this is an intriguing take on Circe and Talya Sindel is very great ,especially during Done For
Hermes :I just love this guy .The Messenger of the Gods is one of the few gods unambiguously on Odysseus side ,he has two showstopping numbers in Wouldnt You Like and Dangerous ,the latter is such a breath of fresh air after all the stuff Ody has gone through and singer Troy Doherty gives him such a fun chaotic energy
Tirisies:The spirit of a blind dead prophet ,Mason Olshavsky's voice skews younger then Id picture Tirisies ,but I actually dont give a damn cause his voice is gorgoeus and haunting ,and my absolute favorite song in the musical is No Longer You ,which is mesmerising and spooky and beautiful,I love it
Scylla :I considered putting her as an antagonist buuuuut shes only in one song and its actually a point Odysseus doesnt really fight her .A multi headed maneating monster that even the God Poseidon fears .Scyllas song is a hecking good villain song ,enhanced by the haunting and deliciously mallicious performance of KJ Burkhauser
Calypso: a Goddess who is obsessed with Odysseus ......I admittedly am not fond of this take on her .Her performance is great Barbara Wangui does an amazing job ......But I feel like she needed another song .Also I am Not Sorry for Loving you is the song I dont like ,though it has grown on me
Now lets talk about the main villains ,the Antagonists
Antinous-Leader of a group of rowdy suitors seeking to take the thrown of Ithica .Antinous think hes top dog ,and is certainly a vile despicable villlain, but what I love is for all his bluster he is just a bully ,though Ayron Alexander gives him a wonderfully sinister and tough performance. His two songs a re great too Little Wolf ahowing off his bravado but its really his villain song Hold Them Down that I love, being one of the most heinous villain songs I have heard ....With a great punchline
Zeus:The King of the Gods AND King of assholes .This is my absolute favorite depiction Zeus cause they dont hide the fact he is SUCH A DICK .What really makes him work is the performance of Luke Holt who gives him a very rich deep voice and a bombastic persona and it helps of all the villain songs,Thunder Bringer is my favorite
Poseidon:The main villain ,the sadistic and cruel god of the Sea ,out to destroy ODysseus for daring to wrong him .He actually appears very few times......But damn is he effective ,so anytimne I heard his voice ,I was like "Oh shit".PRops to Stephen Rodriguez, who kind of gives the Sea God a rock star feel .His raspy voice is very effective, especially in the fan favorite song ,Ruthlessness which is both a great villain song,a unique way of talking about the main themes of the story and just a fucking banger of a song in general
Protagonists-Who I see as the most important characters
Polites:The childhood friend of Odyssues ,and an etrernal optimist.I was debating whether to talk about him but he is important to the themes and story and some of the heaviest hitting moments involve him. Both him and his song Open Arms have grown on me and Stephen Dookie is very lovable in the part
Eurylochus -Is the right hand man to Odysseus .I like Armando Julián's performance ,and he is a very good foil for Odysseus ....But Ill admit I think other then Puppeteer which I love his songs are just OK
Telemachus :Odyssus son ,not in a lot of songs ,but I love his friendship with Athena ,Miguel Velosos voice is wonderful, and I thing he gives big Disney Prince energy especially in his big song Legendary
Athena :The Goddess of Wisdom ,talk about a character I did a turn around on ,as by the end she probabbly is my favorite character, she kind of has the opposite journey of ODysseus and I think that important to give a more solid view. All her songs from Warrior of the Mind to God Games have really grown on me .Teagan Early gives such a great performance
Penelope -Odysseus's wife .Penelope, like Poseidon is not in it a lot ......But they build her up like crazy ,you get her appearing in dreams and hallucinations even a siren impersonating her ,but we dont actually meet her till the end ,and she is so great, wont spoil anything but Anna LEah is especially good .Challange is a song I think Ill be relistening too a lot
Odysseus :Is on paper Odysseus could just be a badass hero .....But the underlining thing of the musical is...At the end of the day he is a guy who has seen traumetic shit and just wants to go home ,and is fighting with his own morals .Odyssues is a man forced to do some highly objectionable stuff ,stuff that takes a toll on him and yet he is always engaging .Odyssus struggles with can he be merciful in a world telling him to be cruel .Now intially I didnt like Jorge Rivera-Herrans voice, its sounded to young to be a warrior king oput through the wringer.....But honestly his voice grew on me and some of the best moments are just his acting especially his pain in Love In PAtadise,,,,,And his utter rage in both "600 Strike " and "Odysseus ".Hes also good at comedic moments ("All I gotta do is open this bag ""WHAT" is the funniest thing to me .Song wise I am partial to Survive (Wher Rivera-Harrens does twofer being heroic as Ody and fucking terrifying as the Cyclops ),Monster and Chyrbdis
I do have one more nitpick in that I feel the Wisdom Saga should be the begining of Act 2
Other then that ,I LOVE Epic,Ive enjoyed it for the last several months.I could probabably talk hours about my favorite songs and so forth but this review ends here.If you got anny Epic questions, ask away

hi I trust your opinion over all others, which translation of the odyssey should I read?
of the three ive read, i can 100% say it is really up to what you like in a book/poem. My first translation was George Palmer's from the 1890s. It's a difficult read in places and relies heavily on pretty flowery language that by most accounts is nottt really reflected in the original? but if you like old literature-style writing it could be for you! Robert Fagles' translation of the illiad was actually really fun to read for me and his odyssey is roughly the same. Good pacing but nothing too memorable. If you want an easy place to start out, not too complex but not leaving much out either, his is a good one! My most recent one is is Emily Wilson's translation, which is as far as i can tell in pretty consistent iambic pentameter? So depending on your nerd level her translation might be perfect for you!! I honestly like her approach to translating the best of the three but i think maybe to someone reading the odyseey for the first time it does leave out a bit of detail here and there. If i read more translations ill add on to this but im all translationed out at the minute (at least for the odyssey. Im reading the caterbury tales now lol)

when ur a movie fan but not one of those weird cinema snobs who like 4 hour long russian movies about a man in one room LMAOOO. like those kinds of people are so pretentious. anyways, heres my discussion of what "really happened" in 2001 space odyseey. weird foreign films are just too hard to understand and are complicated on purpose. i dont really keep up with current events because it doesnt effect me. the israel conflict is too complicated! but we have to vote blue no matter who because trump is the only bad politician. i dont agree with biden supporting israel but still hes better than the other guy!!!. why do you keep getting into the semantics? youre just pulling teeth! i dont watch international movies because theyre needlessly complicated !!!!!
