Lying awake in bed bc I had caffeine and that means I do not sleep tn. Thinking about Genesis Rhapsodos and Achilles again
So kleos aphthiton (undying fame) is a Homeric innovation right. Didn’t appear before the Iliad and Achilles as far as we have evidence of. It’s a very Achillles thing, to strive so hard against the natural order, against death, to attempt to have fame that will never die. Fame is normally expected to be something that fades and dies, but Achilles dreams bigger than that. He wants to look the gods of his world in the eyes and become something like them, something that has a share of their power.
And then you have Genesis, whose fame is great but not quite undying, who is struggling with all he has against the natural order. He wants to tear down the gods that have used him like a puppet on a string, and he wants to be equals with the god those gods have set up as a puppet like him and yet above. He wants to live so badly—if only he knew that Achilles had to die to achieve his undying fame.
Achilles dies, and achieves his immortality of story. Genesis lives, and his story is mostly forgotten. Achilles lost Patroclus, but joined him again in the afterlife. Genesis lost Angeal and Sephiroth, and yet he is forced to live on without them. Which is the worse fate, I wonder?
