First Impression: The Lady Likes a Nerd over Princes

The Lady Likes a Nerd over Princes is about Sharina Claydea, a bubbly and free-spirited 15-year-old student attending the venerable school for nobles, Farah Rubia Academy. The eldest daughter of an Earl, she has never expressed any interest in boys. That is until she meets fellow classmate Riol Glen, the studious and gloomy-looking third son of a countryside Baron. In her efforts to win Riol’s heart (through his stomach), she inadvertently attracts the unwanted attention of a narcissistic tool the first Prince, Leonardo. Will Sharina’s love be able to bloom with this pesky thorn poking in her side?

The main pairing in The Lady Likes a Nerd over Princes is quite unusual, but works very well. I like how despite being polar opposites on the personality scale, Sharina and Riol mesh really well together. I enjoy watching their budding relationship grow.

Unfortunately, we have to deal with Leonardo, who is constantly trying to get in between them. He is extremely thick-headed, forceful, and just doesn’t know when to give up. The only positive is that we get to see Sharina’s spunky, sarcastic, and often times blunt retorts towards Leonardo as she has to constantly turn down his seemingly never-ending advances.

Hopefully, the prince issue will eventually be resolved and our main duo can finally take center stage in this story. At four volumes, The Lady Likes a Nerd over Princes is a relatively short series that I plan to finish reading in the near future.

Random reread of my favorite manga: Riol specifying that Sharina has lighter blue eyes and strawberry blonde hair when she says she's just like other nobility.

Why do you need to point that out Riol?

I just started reading "The Noble Girl With a Crush on the Plain and Studious Guy Finds the Arrogant Prince to be a Nuisance", and the main love interest, Riol Glen, reminds me of Kylar (replace the yandere for deadpan kuudere/tsundere though): shaggy black hair, green eyes, gloomy wet cat appearance, he's also a loner and an outcast. The prince is an assh*le though.

Nobility, magic, and social expectations

I wish more fantasy stuff insisting on "nobility goes to magic school" would incorporate at least small implications.  The Noble Girl With a Crush on a Plain and Studious Guy Finds the Arrogant Prince to Be a Nuisance at least has girls with water elemental powers taught how to control temperature of drinks for guests and possibly how to dye or make watercolor crafts (remember noblewoman could be expected to do embroidery to show favor). This leads to fascinating ideas of social rules like someone with fire powers being expected to always offer a light to someone's cigar.  Nobless oblige with magic. Small little things make things more real

Sharina and Riol’s unique dynamic

Sharina is infatuated with Riol. Riol  thinks a relationship is unthinkable due to his lowers statusand poor reputation; and also really thinks its weird to declare love so easily.

However he doesn’t dislike her company, she’s the only person in school willing to be seen with him.

However, when she gets the freaking prince as a stalker, he’s willing to fake a relationship with Sharina to help draw away some of his anger from her rejections.

Riol is also a runes scholar, or artificer. He feels his magic can’t be deserving of being called magic because its not spontaneous: he can craft magic items but he can’t cast spells.

Sharina however, though nobility, grew up in an estate with lots of wacky characters due to her family hiring the most qualified they could find despite any quirk. She has no disregard for manual labor or craftsmanship and in fact treasures the handmade gifts he gives her for their “fake relationship” or to help magically protect her from her stalker’s schemes.
