Slumber party question! What's your earliest memory of encountering beauty? The first thing you can recall where you looked at something and were struck by how beautiful it was?
#i'm asking because i heard 'colors of the wind' today#and i remembered when i was little#i saw a commercial for pocahontas in front of one of our movies#and it showed 'colors of the wind'#and i distinctly remember a shot where she's standing on a cliff with her hair streaming back and leaves swirling around her#and thinking it was the most beautiful thing i'd ever seen in my life#(i didn't see the movie until i was much older and was very underwhelmed)#i also recall going to a county fair where a woman was selling doll clothes#and there was a pink dress with a skirt made of layers and layers of lace#i thought it was the most beautiful dress in the world and mom got it for me#(at a time when there was not much spare cash)#the other earliest moment is a memory of getting to walk beside my mother as she went to communion#and being so happy because my church had stained glass windows showing the mysteries of the rosary#so the front right corner showed the coronation of mary#and i thought that window was the loveliest thing i'd ever seen#it was the beautiful window into heaven only grown-ups got to see but this was my chance

February through March tends to be a very busy time for me for life stuff and obligations. It gets pretty tough trying to create when you have the free time, but one thing that’s really pulled me through this week is just… drawing stuff to make myself laugh.
Like it isn’t clever or well thought out, but I just think of something stupid and grab a pen. I draw it in a way that feels fun and low pressure, then suddenly once that drawing is done I want to make another… and another… and another.
Anyways, art becomes great when you actually do it for joy. Make yourself shitposts, make it so it’ll make your friends laugh. At the end of the day, all it is about is creating and making community. I forget that all too often.

People who say that Beauty and the Beast (1991) endorses Stockholm Syndrome and domestic abuse have very grossly missed the entire point of the story.
#disney#beauty and the beast#meta#disney meta#txt#belle was never abused once by the beast in the movie. he was really just a jerk#y'all do realize that there are people who are jerks that aren't necessarily abusive#now they might have a higher inclination for it but no beast never abused her#the scene where he lost his temper was supposed to show how much beastly nature was having a hold on him and he immediately showed regret#afterwards. as soon as belle called him out on his bad temper he never tried any other shit ever again#y'all really think that if he was abusive he would have redeemed himself THAT quickly?#again he did act like an ass but he was not an abuser. i don't think he woulda even been able to stomach doing something to her#unintentionally or not#the entire point of the story is that despite him literally being a beast belle was able to see “beauty” in him#she was able to look past that and see that he was actually a good person but that he just needed to improve himself#see belle wasn't a “i can fix him” type. she was the inspiration for him to become a better individual#being with her made him feel things he probably never felt before. he felt loved wanted desired#that is what he needed but had stayed away from because of his own insecurities#which is also why this discussion about whether he was hot in his human form or not is irrelevant in the end#belle loved him for who he was and she probably thought he was the most beautiful man in the whole world both visually and spiritually#also beast respected and loved belle. gaston only lusted her and saw her as a pontential trophy wife to boost his social status#you see gaston and beast are actually quite similar in the beginning#but the thing is that beast has virtues that gaston lacks#beast also wanted belle just to break a spell although he did try to show her humanity to show that there was an emotional complex human#being but he did genuinely fall in love with her and let her go. he sacrificed himself and his servants because he truly loved her#gaston would have never done that before he was already too far gone in his fixation with being the BEST#anyways#i have gone long enough about this but you get my point

Busting a lung because the whole Joker Arthur thing was cringe as piss all, despite being one of the most beautiful healing times in my life. Still embarrassing cringe as possible can be.

#my post#i watched a video the other day about what mightve been the cause of disneys failure at making musicals in the last decade or so#and it started with. of all movies. tangled! and im still stuck on that#like it was specifically about the 'i see the light' scene when theyre on the water surrounded by the lanterns#the song writers were made to write like 40 songs they had to scrap UNTIL they were finally told the issue#that the team wanted the visuals to come first and for the song to come second. which meant they wanted the song TONED DOWN??#THEY COULD BOTH BE EQUALLY AMAZING HELLO??#it hurts me deeply inside to know. with how much i love that song. THAT THERE COULDVE BEEN AN EVEN BETTER ONE?#and then disney in general is just completely fumbling their songwriters which is why the songs suck#songwriters not given the ability to have a say in the story despite being part of telling the story? being scared to say anything-#-when the whole reason theyre there is to contribute! being told that they arent supposed to add anything new. only execute the plans made!#i have to imagine the storywriters are also being fucked over but the video was specifically about songwriters#my favorite moment in any movie EVER is a moment where the visuals AND the song come together EQUALLY to make the most beautiful moment ever#when moana and te ka are meeting in the middle of the parted sea. the way you can FEEL its the culmination of the movie#the way that te ka is frantically crawling toward and screaming at moana. the way that moana is calmly and confidently walking toward te ka#moana singing this peaceful beautiful song despite the danger. because she knows the truth. she sees te fiti beneath her unwilling disguise#the way that te ka hears her words and reacts by matching that calmness and letting her get close#and everything that that moment is meant to represent and *can* represent even if unintended#its just. its my favorite moment ok. Not to sound like an anti intellectual or anything but the constant philosophical analysis of media is exhausting after a certain point. And this is coming from someone who enjoys media analysis.
Like, yes we live in a capitalist hellscape. Yes we’re constantly being marketed to. Yes nearly every piece of media you see is meant to sell you a ✨product✨ and yes that sucks ass. HOWEVER, I think it’s absolutely possible to understand that and still want to engage with that piece of media regardless. I don’t necessarily think knowing all of that removes all value from it or even that it means it can’t have artistic merit.
“This piece of media is promoting a brand or product” and “I still think it has an interesting story to tell” are thoughts that can coexist. They aren’t mutually exclusive.
We should absolutely continue critiquing media. We should continue working to ensure that original stories get produced and promoted to larger audiences, especially those told by marginalized voices. But imma be real with you, sometimes I get tired. Sometimes I need a temporary break and escapism via “superficial” media. Sometimes I just want to have fun for a bit. And yes there are no apolitical actions in society and yes my ability to engage with this type of media at all comes from a place of privilege. But goddamnit sometimes I just want to watch the Barbie movie or wear makeup or watch dumb anime and it doesn’t always have to be that deep.

I finished the special story in Connections and it got me to bawl my eyes out so bad. That story was so much more meaningful and emotional and impactful than the entirety of Naruto itself. What the fuck do you mean it was written by Kishimoto????? He did NOT write something for a side story in one of the ultimate ninja storm games and make it better than anything he's ever done before. There's just no fucking way.
