I'm sorry, but if you think "prison abolition" or "family abolition" are slogans, that tells me that you've never actually seriously engaged with abolitionist thought. Y'all are throwing up strawmen based on what, discussions you've had on tumblr? It turns out there are actually people who spend their entire lives thinking about all of these questions and more. Take family abolition for example: Sophie Lewis addresses the "toxic slogan" argument in the first chapter of her (extremely readable) book, Abolish the Family:A Manifesto for Care and Liberation.
I don't get angry because you're asking questions, I get angry when you demand simple answers to complex problems. I get angry when you simply ignore the answers you're given when they can't be explained in a single paragraph. The answers are there, but it turns out revolution takes effort.
The other reason I'm generally annoyed with the "Abolish X" crowd who actually DO mean "abolish X" and not a watered-down version is that ime they very rarely have fully thought out the implications of what they're demanding and then get angry when other people ask about it.
"Family abolition means completely removing legal ties for family units and allowing all children the choice of where they live" okay. So if I see a three-year-old throwing a fit because she doesn't want to leave the park, and I go over and tell her if she comes home with me she can stay as long as she likes and then we'll get McDonald's on the way home, that three-year-old should have the ability to make that decision? The parent or guardian has no legal recourse to stop me from taking her? Cause if the answer's no, that's not abolition, that's reform baby!
"I'm done talking about what we'll do with rapists and murderers after we abolish prisons, it's all anybody ever wants to talk about!" Well yeah man! 98% of people just interpreted your words as "we're going to let murderers roam around killing people at will"! You need to explain very clearly what plans you have that will stop them that aren't incarceration or you're not going to make any headway! And if your answer involves any form of "well of course SOME people can't be allowed total freedom" - that's not abolition, that's reform baby!
I'm not even gonna touch the number of people who think we should abolish the police and replace them with what are essentially roaming squads of vigilantes dispensing "community justice", whatever the fuck that means.
Like these aren't "gotcha" questions, they're legitimate problems you're going to have to contend with. And if you wave away all these questions with "you're just making up ridiculous scenarios" and "we'll think of something to fix that once we destroy the current system", then yeah actually, I DO think you care more about sounding radical than about making any kind of change.
#you guys sound like fucking matt iglesias#the utter arrogance of#“ive thought about it a lot”#when there are people and communities who have dedicated their lives to thought and work and even practice#yes. there are and always have been communities with no families or cops or prisons#if it works on practice it has to work in theory

the mountchristen pharma job by @coffeecatsme (book-verse)
@suseagull5914: Another unique, fun fic! Heist AU meets just a hint of Christmas feels, and combined with the fact that it jumps around in time, this author constantly keeps you on your toes, wondering what will happen next. A must read!
The Flight Before Christmas by @indomitable-love (book-verse)
@dot524: Alex is a flight attendant, and he’s good at what he does. But for some reason, this tall blond guy annoys the heck out of him. What will happen when they are both stranded in a snowstorm over the holiday and stuck sharing a hotel room? I’ll give you three guesses. This one had great banter and a dab of angst, and it was such a fun read!
If You're Not Made For Me (Why Did We Fall in Love?) by @captainjunglegym (book-verse)
@na-dineee: Not going to lie, this was a challenging read, which lingers long after! Henry and Alex are in an established relationship, so certain of their future together. Then they stumble over the question of having kids... What follows is messy and ugly, touching and relatable, almost destructive, but resovled in a very sensitive way. This hurt phenomenally good!
london's so nice, back in your seamless rhymes by @firenati0n (book-verse)
@na-dineee: Alex, newly moved to London, meets Henry on his first day of work while riding the bus into the city. From that day on, they commute together every morning and evening, and with each passing day, their feelings for each other grow. What can I say: it was soft, it was fluffy, it was so sweet. It was everything I needed to feel all warm and happy.
I'm a risk (please take it) by dazedandconfused (book-verse)
@na-dineee: A rom-com.' Yeah—my ass. But, Wikipedia says rom-coms focus on romantic relationships and the associated dramatic twists and obstacles. Fair enough, that fits. 3.5 years of pining, angst, hurt—but a happy ending. This fic was incredible !! I can’t stop thinking about it, weeks later I’m still imagining how Alex & Henry might be doing now. Absolutely brilliant!
kiss me on this cold December night by strwbrryfox (book/movie-verse)
@suseagull5914: If you like holiday fics and coffee shop AUs, this is the fic for you! This fic is oblivious Alex, pining firstprince, and the ins and outs of being part of a workplace environment during the holidays all wrapped up in a pretty bow that will leave you swooning.
Tell Me All Your Secrets by @everwitch-magiks (book-verse)
@dot524: Every time Alex visits his sister in NYC, he ends up hanging out with her best friend, Henry. Henry’s been gone on Alex from Day 1, but he assumed Alex was painfully straight. When a short-term relationship with Liam helps Henry realize that’s not the case, things start to change. The story culminates with Alex experiencing Pride in NYC for the first time. A delightful slow-burn with lots of yearning and realizations - such a satisfying and fun read.
I Will Follow You Into The Dark by @here-queer-jointpain-severe (book-verse)
@suseagull5914: This fic, the author's fic for the A Royal Big Bang event, has everything: introspection, fantasy, Alex going above and beyond for his love for Henry (as he should!), and the complex plot and suspense that will have you clicking the next chapter button until you reach the end. This fic is such a good glimpse into so many of the relationships in the book from such a unique angle!
Like Flowers In The Springtime, Every Day Is Valentine’s (That’s What Your Love’s Like) by @rockyroadkylers (book-verse)
@na-dineee: This has to be some of the fluffiest post-canon fluff ever written, I’m sure of it! After two years together, Henry is more than ready to sweep Alex off his feet in the most extravagant way possible. Of course he is over-the-top—what did you expect? And Alex, bless him, is completely here for it—he loves it and loves Henry, and I couldn’t help but melt into a puddle. An absolutely wonderful comfort read!

mmmm no super great ideas for you but im craving for virgin!rindou and single mom reader… aaaaaauhagghg.
collection
慢一點,久一點,真一點。
Rindou initiates the talk first.
It happens on a game of WNRS in your living room, takeout boxes long forgotten on the coffee table. The TV is playing a movie you're sure neither of you are really watching, yet you still want to pretend that you are.
You've been giggling at him for the past hour. He's a pretty funny guy, you think. Doesn't have as big of an ego you thought guys like him would have.
He's a nerd who's always so observant and nice. He's nice to you, your son, the ladies living in your apartment complex who always needs help switching light bulbs because they're too old for that now. One time behind doors Yuzuha's said that she'd smash if he weren't such a loser all the time.
(You think he is, too.
But it's what that makes him so... fuckable.
You think it's bad that you keep having these thoughts, knowing that you're most probably leading him on.
You're not ready yet.
But your heart still thumps weirdly when he comes to visit with warm food and occasionally new toys that you can tell he's had a hard time picking for your boy 一 because he's somehow always one colour off, or one category away.
When he bought Hot Wheels, the kid's already moved on to playing Legos. And when he gifted an expensive Star Wars set that he saved up for, the little shit just has to be in his Mommy phase.)
He gets embarrassed easily and you can just tell he's a virgin with the way he treats porn magazines that Yuzuha has somehow gotten her hands on, stuffed behind cabinets so that Shou doesn't find them. Neither of you let her know that she's been exposed, but it's more fun this way.
He's just a guy. Genuine, very smart despite what he says. Not book smart, but he reads up on things a lot. A bit clumsy at times, but he's still responsive than most men.
He's easy to talk to. Easy to know.
Easy to一
"What's a compliment you wished you received more frequently? Oh, dang. I gotta think about this." He flips the card around, throwing his head back onto the couch.
And yet again一
"Do you wanna go first?"
What are guys like him?
"I wish more people told me I was pretty."
Your response came to you naturally. It poured like waterfall, thorny chain tightening around your heart, squeezing your flesh tight, and you busy yourself with a loose thread on your blanket.
Rindou only stares at you from the other end of the couch. Almost like a deadpan, but not really. His violets pierce through your soul, dissecting you up one by one. You don't make eye contact even when you can hear the silent screams for you to look at him.
"You're kidding."
"What? It's true."
"No. I mean, no one tells you that all the time?"
You crack a smile, glancing up to take just one quick look. He's still as handsome as ever, boyish features much more prominent under the yellow light illuminating the room.
Soft nose, pretty doe eyes. Cracked lips pink from the Malatang you love eating. Veiny hands 一 one thick, desirable finger twirling around the drawstring of his pants 一 that draws you in so close you can't help but go wild at the sight.
"What, you think I'm pretty?"
He doesn't cough like you'd expected him to. Doesn't get embarrassed or act any more like a classic, textbook virgin at your poke.
"Yeah. You're pretty." His voice gets softer with every syllable. Dodgy eyes looking away with each word.
You don't respond at that, but you can't lie that his compliment did make you feel something swirling on the inside. Something blooming in your tummy from the way his eyes look into your own.
It's true 一 you haven't been told for your looks as much as you've always wanted. You're hot, you're sexy, sure 一 but you haven't been pretty to them. You've always hoped that they could see past your body 一 to see you for who you are on the inside.
"You're一" He shifts in his seat, suddenly feeling a little too hot, heart beating a little too fast in his chest. "You're pretty, okay. You always spend too much time in the mirror but I think you're fine just like this."
You purse your lips, listening.
"You're... Shit, I'm一"
You understand him when he throws his pillow to the side to run fingers through his hair. He's not always good with words, hasn't always been. But he still tries, and you like that about him.
He always puts in effort.
"You're pretty, like music. There's no boundaries, no... box. You can be anything. It's cool."
You grin at that. "Really?"
A nod. "I can tell you that everyday from now on."
An awkward silence too heavy for any of you to handle covers the room like blanket too fast. The soft, anticipating smirk on his face drops when you shift in your seat, clicking your tongue. Fingers scratching at your brows, teeth biting into the corners of your lips.
"Rindou, I'm sorry if I have been leading you on, I一" You sigh. "I don't think I'm ready for一."
"No, wait一" He tries inching a hand towards you but you dodge. "I thought we一 Aren't we onto something here?"
Rindou feels pathetic. He feels as if he's reaching for something that seems close but is still so, so far away.
"No, I'm sorry. I'll pay you back for tonight's dinner. And I don't think you should come over so often anymore. I'll talk to Shou-chan, have him understand."
He lets out a breath too short, standing on his feet as if it'll help him figure you out better. "Why? Is it me?"
"I just don't think it's fair to you, okay? We should stop. I'm sorry."
"What isn't fair to me?"
You give him a look so sad that his heart hurts.
"You're gonna be dealing with a kid that's not yours. He's hyperactive and naughty before bed. He's picky with food and doesn't like taking showers. Worst of all you're gonna be dealing with me. I'm not easy. I'm difficult to manage, to handle, to一 You'll not like me anymore when you see it for yourself. Guys like you deserve better things."
Fuck.
Rindou scrunches his brows, face twisting into one of confusion, one that makes you seem crazy for saying what you said.
"Why do you say these things about yourself? Why do you say these things about him? He's just a kid, I'm not good with kids but I'm sure I can handle him out of all." He throws his hands up in the air a little. "And, seriously, guys like me? What am I like? Why do you assume that way about me? I'm not that kind of person. I don't like doing that."
You fight the tears threatening to fall. It hurts, to say the least.
"Like, why do you think I've been around for so long? I would've turned on my back long ago if you and Shou were so hard to love."

sometimes I feel like we’re in the trenches as HJP fans, like wydm he gets flak from the marauder fandom for being mid compared to Jily, Marauders & Co, if not a convenient receptacle for only his parents’ traits, and he’s also getting bashed in the Next Gen fandom for being a bad dad? (again, fingers point to his hotheadedness or impulsive nature, like, what a lazy and unnuanced take but i digress) nevermind he’s undergone plenty flanderization in the general HP fandom!
Harry shaping up to be a terrible parent is plainly ooc for him imo, but I couldn’t bring myself to actually read Cursed Child, so I’m very interested in your thoughts on this!
I never read Cursed Child either, at least not in full. I read a summary + a few lines of dialogue and I felt that I didn't need to torture myself further with it.
Like, I mentioned in the past, a lot of fandoms have this tendency to completely change and mischaracterize main characters, usually for the worse. I think this tendency comes from a place of simplifications. A simplified character is easier to engage with and to place in different fanon scenarios so characters are stripped of their nuance and complexity to serve fanon. And there is an appeal in these simplified versions. They can be good for comedy, crack, and less serious stuff, but when you want to write really angsty shit, I find the lack of nuance disappointing more often than not.
Especially when it comes to Harry, who is often misunderstood by people who claim to love him. As I mentioned in the past, I don't think Harry is hot-headed the way most of the fandom thinks he is. I will die on the hill of Harry's explosive anger being a trauma response because the boy can't get a break.
In the case of Harry, I think it goes beyond just simplification though.
I used to read a lot of HP fic (stopped a few years ago) and Harry was a different character in each "genre" of fics. Like, depending on who he was paired with or the tropes of the fic, you'd get a completely different character who calls himself "Harry Potter".
It's becouse Harry isn't really written as Harry in a lot of fics, not really. See the story is about him. He's the main character who has the most interesting tale. The series is literally named after him. And everyone sees it. And fans want to write a story that won't work with Harry as a character, but they want the backstory — they want to write about a Boy Who Lived that isn't Harry — so we get OCs with the name "Harry Potter" even if I'd never call any of them Harry because they are not him. His story and name are used to make an OC the center of the story, essentially.
Now, I don't mind when people do this. People can do whatever, I'm just not gonna read or engage with it. What bothers me is when people try to pass a Harry who very much is an OC in Harry's skin (although their appearance is also often not that of book Harry, so it's not even the same skin. A pet peeve of mine is when Harry is drawn with brown hair, it just miffs me personally) as the canon one.
And I can somewhat understand where this mistake started, and like with a lot of things I'm not a fan of in this fandom — I blame the movies.
Movie Harry is passive and bland. I think he's a badly written character. But there is a reason for this huge downgrade in Harry's characterization between book and movie.
Movie!Harry was written to be an audience self-insert. Audience self-insert characters are more common in films than in books. In books, the POV characters have to have a personality to be interesting and to be able to carry the book with their internal monologue. They gotta be someone you want to read about. But in film, you can get away with a main character that has no personality at all. And that's what they did to Harry. They turned him into a character the movie audience could project whatever they wanted onto. And I think this was on purpose. So, of course, the audience projected whatever they wanted onto the bland template that is movie!Harry because that's what the movies were written to allow.
So, I think this is part of what caused a lot of the discrepancies in Harry's character. I mean, I'm sure there are a bunch of other factors, and I'm no fandom expert, but, I feel like this self-insert aspect of movie!Harry had a part in what happened to his character in the fandom.
(The negative effect movie!Ron on the portrayal of his character in fanon is similar. Though, this downgrade happened for different reasons called "the director(s) seemed to have shipped Harmony and hated Ron").

Can I request platonic Nico fic where reader is pinning over someone but Nico it’s silently judging, seeing if that person is truly good enough for their older sibling reader?
‘You like someone.’
You looked over at your brother, who was standing next to you within the shade casted by the trees that kept you both somewhat cool, before raising a brow at him. ‘And how did you come to that conclusion my little shade.’ You replied as you ruffled his hair, much to Nico’s dismay.
‘You’ve got that look on your face.’ He tells you but you couldn’t help but scoff at the inherent vagueness of that statement.
‘I’ve got many looks on my face throughout the day you’re going to have to be more specific here.’ Nico looked at you with a glare, only to be greeted back by your mischievous eyes and matching smile, gods he hated you sometimes for making things more complex then they actually were just because you felt like teasing him.
‘The sappy ‘oh my gods I wish they were mine’ type of look.’ Nico said and you know the look he was on about, but you decided to feign innocence and put on a thoughtful face as though you were trying your very hardest to remember what he was on about. ‘Sappy look…sappy look…’ you trailed off and Nico had just about enough as he shoved you in the side before pointing across the camp and over to where Luke was and your face immediately drops.
‘Him! You like him!’ Nico exclaims and you were quick to cover his mouth with your hand when you noticed a group of campers walking past you both, greeting them with a forced and cordial smile as they breezed past you both, just to look back at your brother with murderous intent. ‘Shut up little shade, I don’t want all of camp to hear you if they haven’t already.’ You hissed as Nico only looked at you unimpressed as he pushed your hand off of his mouth, and you didn’t need to say anything to know that Nico was now in protective mode.
‘Why him? Why Castellan?’ He asked and you sighed as you remembered how the moment you first came to camp by yourself, having been abandoned by the demi-gods that you were originally with, and how Luke was the only one that actually made you feel welcomed even after you gotten claimed by Hades; You don’t hold that grudge against most of camp who shunned you anymore but you weren’t exactly buddy buddy with them either if they were going to be that superficial.
Then again Hades himself gets villainised by many in modern retelling of Greek myth that are forcing the whole ‘girlboss’ bullshit down your throat, which only leads to those kinds of books being put on half sales shelves because it’s that bad. Not that you were saying hades was innocent but out of the entire Greek pantheon, you figured rather early on that your father was the kind of deity to keep out of things that didn’t concern him.
Sins of the father or whatever. You thought to yourself as you remembered that you had left Nico completely hanging for the past five minutes for an explanation.
‘He was the only one who actually gave a shit if I stayed in camp or not.’ You replied and Nico’s brows went towards his hairline, knowing all too well how isolating being the child of Hades was or even just a child of the big three in general, but people quickly warmed up to Percy and Jason but still had caution when addressing you or him.
‘That’s it? Is the bar truly in hell.’ Nico snides as he looks at Luke from the corner of his eye, wondering what the son of Hermes could possibly provide for you. He couldn’t see the appeal as you did but Nico didn’t exactly think there were many good romantic options for you at camp or anywhere for that matter, this didn’t mean he couldn’t see that Luke was attractive and popular but outside of the obvious Nico wasn’t fully convinced that Luke was worth you.
Greatest swordsman at camp or not it was going to take a lot more for Nico to even consider taking Luke seriously.
You groan as you put your hands on your hips. Seriously Nico? You barely knew me a month ago and all of a sudden you’re boxing your opinions on my love life?’
Nico mimics your stance as his dark eyes flare with protectiveness. ‘Someone has to keep an eye on your supposed love interests and make sure there is no ulterior motive underneath.’ You couldn’t help but smile at your younger brother as you ruffle his hair affectionately before pinching his cheeks.
‘Oh is my brave little brother going to fight off all my suitors for me? How sweet.’ You mocked before laughing when Nico bats your hands away from his cheeks.
‘Shut up.’ He grumbles but before you could mess with him some more, like all good older siblings do, you heard a familiar laugh and immediately stilled in your place as Nico’s eyes darkened with weariness. ‘Castellan, what do you want.’ Nico looks the head counsellor of the Hermes cabin up and down with scrutiny as you only nudged him in the side for his lack of filtering his words.
‘Nothing much, just saw you guys and thought I’d check it out.’ Luke said casually as he looked over at you and smiled, making you smile back almost immediately as you could feel yourself practically melt under his dark gaze and perfect smile. Oh you knew you were a goner the moment you started to comforted his laugh your favourite sound and his eyes your favourite colour.
It should be made illegal with the feelings like made you feel but you’d be lying if feeling as weak as you did in his presence didn’t feel good. You know you should pride yourself more and all, however you couldn’t help but downplay yourself in front of Luke in hopes of seeming more appealing to him, but you’d couldn’t help as some seeds of doubt to creep into your mind regarding whether or not Luke would risk being seen with a child of hades.
Nico huffs. ‘You’ve checked it out, seen nothing out of the ordinary, so does that mean you’re going to leave us alone preferably now?’
‘Nico.’ You nudge your brother in the side once more, giving him your best side eye, hoping that he’d understand that now wasn’t the time for his sharp jabs and hostility towards your crush but you knew you were asking for too much. Luke on the other hand only laughs at Nico’s words, not taking offence to anything being said, which only made Nico frown even more as his confident attitude almost came across as too cocky for his liking.
Seriously Nico wanted to desperately understand what it was that you see in that guy?
‘It’s fine, it’s fine I just thought I’d pay my favourite a visit and hope that they might want to join me down by the lake this afternoon.’ Luke replies as he slings an arm over your shoulder, drawing you into his side as he watches you with a look that made you feel as though you were being truly looked at. You couldn’t help but let out a little giggle as you felt butterflies erupt in your stomach, and a warmth spread throughout your chest from just his touch alone, you’ve had been in this position before and yet it never fails to make you feel wanted with how casual Luke was with his affection with you.
Hell even after his touch disappeared along with him as he’s taken elsewhere you were left with the lingering want to keep his arm on your shoulder forever. You didn’t think yourself as someone who was desperate for touch or to have someone constantly providing you with physical affection, if anything you weren’t particularly keen with it as you were quite cold to the touch, a weird perk of being the child of hades was to seemingly have the body temperature of a dead body; Yet you didn’t mind if it was Luke was the one to touch you.
‘Yes.’
‘No.’
You and Nico looked at one another in matching narrowed glares.
‘Yes.’ You spit.
‘No.’ Nico retorts back.
‘I’m going whether you like it or not little shade.’ You whispered to your little brother as you looked over a Luke with a smile. ‘I’m totally free this afternoon, absolutely for nothing else happening other than hanging with you at the lake.’ You chuckled awkwardly as you gave him finger guns that you immediately regret soon after, especially upon hearing Nico try not to laugh himself at your forced attempts of being cool. ‘Is anyone else going to be there by chance?’ You added.
‘I was kinda hoping it would just be me and you really.’ Luke says as he rubs the back of his head almost sheepishly. ‘Hope that’s okay.’ God you hated Luke and his beautiful brown eyes and how they made you feel.
‘That’s fine!’ You exclaimed. ‘That’s great even.’
‘Great.’ Luke beamed and it looked like he wanted to say something else but he heard his name being called across camp and his shoulders deflated, something only Nico seemed to have noticed, and he looked back at you with a sympathetic expression. ‘See you later ghost flower.’ He says sweetly as he pulls away from you, leaving you to try not to vocalise your hatred of the departure of his warmth.
‘See you.’ You and Nico watched as Luke walked away from you both and a silence lingered between to two of you, at least until Nico felt it appropriate to let his thoughts be known.
‘I still don’t like him.’ He tells you, arms cross over his chest, glaring at Luke’s back.
‘You don’t like anybody.’ You shot back at him, seeing him shrug from the corner of your eyes, unbothered at your jab.
‘Yeah that might be true but I don’t like him for the fact that he likes you.’ Nico said and you could only see this afternoon with Luke go horribly wrong if your brother was lingering in the shadows of your not date with the Hermes boy.

On recent far-left attacks on the Anti-Defamation League:
I think the ADL is wrong about Musk's salutes.
I think the ADL's Israel advocacy sometimes comes into conflict with their mission in the diaspora. I think their methodologies for data collection and reporting need improvement.
I think that, like the ACLU and the SPLC, the ADL is flawed, imperfect and does much more good than harm.
---
Christopher Hitchens put into words what academics used to live by:
"What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence".
The burden of proof is on those making the claim, and the claims of droptheadl.org aren't supported with primary sources or evidence.
For example:
To support its claims about the ADL and SNCC, droptheadl.org gives this link
This is a link to a Google Books entry. There no actual text, no citation, no chapter, no page, just the claim that somewhere in this 300-page book exists proof of the ADL denouncing SNCC as racist.
However, that's not in the book.
In reaponse to a SNCC newsletter (this is what a primary source looks like!) containing many factual errors about Israel,
...Morris Abram, president of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), summed up their outrage: “Anti-Semitism is anti-Semitism whether it comes from the Ku Klux Klan or from extremist Negro groups
[For those who haven't studied the era: at this point, "Negro" was still the word which the black community preferred. The transition to widespread identification as 'black' got going in the 60s and finished in the 70s. The use of the word 'Negro' here is not a slur. I state this in advance because I know how the illiberal left weilds its willful ignorance]
...
Abram was also careful to echo what the ADL had said: that SNCC’s article put it in the same anti-Israeli trench as the Arab world and the Soviet Union.
That's verifiably, unquestionably true.
Droptheadl.org lied. This book doesn't seem to say what they claim it says, which is why they didn't quote it. Why let facts get in the way of the narrative which makes them feel good about themselves?
The book, which I recommend reading, isn't about the ADL. It's a scholarly examination of the relationships between the wars the Arab world launched in Israel and the Civil Rights Movement. This requires much discussion of the impact on the complex relationships between black communities and Jewish communities in the US in the context of their views on Israel and Palestine.
It's fascinating. Here's another excerpt illustrating why many Jews saw SNCC as taking an antisemitic turn:
One day in May of 1967, [Stokely] Carmichael and [H. Rap] Brown were in Alabama chatting with Donald Jelinek, a lawyer who worked with SNCC.
Jelinek, who was Jewish, expressed his positive feelings about Israel and his concerns about the Jewish state’s situation in that tension-filled month as war clouds were on the horizon in the Middle East.
“So it was a shock to me,” Jelinek later recounted, “when my SNCC friends mildly indicated support for the Arabs.” Mildly stated or not, their sentiments prompted Jelinek to reply, “But they may wipe out and destroy Israel.”
Carmichael adroitly changed the subject with some humor, and the men began laughing.
Jelinek thereafter overheard Brown quietly singing to himself, “arms for the Arabs, sneakers for the Jews.” When Jelinek asked him what that song meant, an embarrassed Brown explained that he had learned the song as a student in Louisiana. It implied that the Israelis would need sneakers (tennis shoes) to run from the Arabs, who were armed with weapons from abroad.
My qualms with this, my disappointment in and disagreement with both Carmichael and Brown doesn't make me a racist. It doesn't make the AJC or the ADL racist.
Zionism is the belief that Jews should have self-determination in their homeland.
Nazism was the belief that racially superior Aryans own the world and that the genocide of the Jewish people was explicitly required because they were the source of all evil.
These are not the same. Suggesting they are the same, as Carmichael did, is morally and intellectually bankrupt. Pointing this out doesn't make me a racist. It makes me literate.
I still own a copy of Carmichael's book, Black Power. Carmichael (who later changed his name to Kwame Ture) was a complex person. Like every other historical figure, he was neither a saint nor a demon.
I can admire a lot about the Black Panthers without falsely claiming that nothing they ever did or said was troubling, poorly reasoned, or bigoted. The world is more complex than that. There are no saints.
Gandhi was a great leader for Indian self-rule and a visionary of nonviolent protest. He was also a racist as a young man who said black people "...are troublesome, very dirty and live like animals." Read about his work in South Africa. He was also really weird about sex and slept naked with his grand niece, which we'd rightly recognize today as abusive.
But the depth of reasoning I see from the illiberal left is "ADL criticized SNCC, so they're Nazis."
No, child. The world is more complex than that.
My 14yo is right. US leftists (not liberals, leftists) are allergic to nuance and discard the facts contradicting any narrative which makes them feel good about themselves.

Back to the book:
It's really great about going into some of the factors contributing to the deteriorating relationship at the time between Jewish Americans and Black Americans. It points to this essay by James Baldwin, titled "Negroes Are Anti-Semitic Because They're Anti-White." I urge you to read it, it is a fascinating artifact of its time and place.
The book goes on:
Jews had long advocated for black liberation by, for example, playing a role in the foundation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. Jewish support for blacks was well known; as early as February of 1942, the American Jewish Committee published a study titled “Jewish Contribution to Negro Welfare.” Having experienced the sting of anti-Semitism, many Jews believed they were fighting in the same trench against discrimination alongside African Americans. When the civil rights struggle grew to become a mass movement in the 1950s and early 1960s, Jewish moral and financial support was crucial, and Jews were disproportionately well-represented among those whites who lent their support to the cause. Jewish financial contributions to civil rights groups were also significant. Jews even were the subject of criticism from some southern whites for the high-profile role they played in helping blacks win their freedom. All this compounded a sense of betrayal by SNCC that was felt by many Jewish Americans.
It should not be surprising or taken as racist that Jews objected to SNCC's advocacy against Israel's existence and I maintain that any call for Israel to be destroyed is innately, inarguably antisemitic. No other nation endures this.
There was unquestionably tension between SNCC and the entire spectrum of non-black Americans who supported SNCC when SNCC ejected non-black members. From our perspective, decades removed, I can understand both why SNCC members narrowly voted for this AND why non-black members of SNCC were hurt and disillusioned. All of those perspectives were and are valid.
The world is complex. People are complex.
When I was an undergrad studying African American Political Thought, we discussed these tensions head-on, using primary sources, and evaluated them dispassionately.
We concluded that there are no villains in this story. SNCC got a bunch of facts wrong about Israel, their staunch Jewish allies were profoundly disappointed, saw hypocrisy in SNCC's position, and said so.
I think that far left Americans overlaid their feelings about a domestic struggle on a foreign one where they don't fit...and then discarded the facts and the complexity which got in the way of a satisfying narrative which made them feel like the good guys instead of forcing them to grapple with an uncomfortably complex reality.
I think that's what the illiberal left still does. It doesn't like complexity, it doesn't like academic rigor, it likes stories it can tell itself about its moral purity and discards facts, complexity, or rigor which threaten their view of themselves as saviors.
The ADL isn't perfect, its leaders haven't been and are not saints. They have screwed up many times. l regard them the same way as I regard the Southern Poverty Law Center and the ACLU: The good they do for all Americans radically outweighs their failings and I'm going to keep supporting them and yelling at them to do better.
But seriously, if you have any actual evidence and primary sources on racism from the ADL, I really want to see it.
This weak sauce from droptheadl.org doesn't make the case the illiberal left thinks it makes.
The illiberal left perhaps forgets how the ADL responded when Trump called for requiring American Muslims to register.
“If one day Muslim Americans will be forced to register their identities, then that is the day that this proud Jew will register as a Muslim. ”
- ADL chief executive Jonathan Greenblatt

Who is your favorite LO character? Who is your favorite LR character?
i feeeeel like my answers change every time i get asked this question JFDSKLAFJSDALK but that's okay because it just means i'm constantly finding new ways to analyze and explore these characters >:3
LO faves: Minthe and Hephaestus.
Minthe because she obviously gets such shit treatment in the comic and subsequently from the fanbase, but she's a lot more relatable than 99% of the characters in the plot, she feels like she has actual depth and a real character arc, even if that arc ended with an unceremonious whisper. It goes to show how great of a character she was that Rachel practically had to nerf her out of the plot, because it was often only ever at its best when she was present. Funny how as soon as she was written out, there was nothing interesting going on with Hades or Persephone anymore - the plot was literally so boring without her that Rachel literally tried to create a Minthe 2.0 through Leuce, and we all know how well that went /s
As for Hephaestus, nothing super specific, I just like his vibes. Maybe it's just my absent older brother issues, but I would love to just like, hang out with him, game in the same room as him, just autistic parallel play stuff, I think he would be into that. Only complaint is the design flaw of giving him running blades as the default prosthetic, that can't be comfortable for his hips and joints. But that's not his fault u.u and that's basically my only complaint about him which makes him a winner in my book, esp compared to the rest of the cast. He might not be in the comic all that much, but that was clearly to his benefit because it seems the more attention Rachel pays to a character, the worse they wind up being in the long run due to poor writing. Hephaestus is in the comic just enough, not too little, not too often.
So yeah, Minthe and Hephaestus are both 10/10 characters written by a 0/10 writer. They did the best they could... not Rachel of course, she did literally the bare minimum of "representation" which often came across as ignorant white knighting at best and blatant stereotyping / stigmatizing at worst, I mean that Hephaestus and Minthe did the best they could as genuinely interesting characters with unique circumstances and disabilities who were being written by an amateur Wattpad-level writer with a privileged white guilt complex lmao
LR faves (within the cast that's currently been introduced): Persephone and Dionysus.
I know, very different from my LO choices, esp considering Persephone herself within LO is literally one of the most insufferable characters by the end, but I'm frankly having a great time rewriting her in my own way, especially in regards to her specific role as the "wrathful side" of Kore. I know I've gotten questions regarding the interpretation of Kore as a DID system, and while that interpretation is totally valid, the angle I always approached it from was that repressed trauma and emotional bottlenecking. Obviously those two things are, in and of themselves, contributing factors to DID, so far be it from me to tell people they can't identify with Kore / Persephone as DID representation. It just motivates me even more to give her the character arc she deserves and never got. It's gonna be messy. It's even gonna be downright ugly at times.
But I hope, in the end, that anyone who identifies with her struggles will find closure and comfort in the resolution of her story. It's certainly a challenging tightrope to walk, between honoring the themes of her original myth, retelling a version of her that almost existed in LO (a version that I was hoping for and never got), and dissecting the implications of my own version of her throughout LR's narrative, but it's a challenge that I've been having a great time undertaking and all I can hope for is that I can meet and possibly exceed my own expectations - as well as the readers - in the end. This is Kore's story - it's also Persephone's.
As for Dionysus... he's just a very, very fun character to write, and someone who I had the advantage of introducing before he was depicted in LO. It wasn't intentional but it sure as shit paid off because even though I'm sure some will assume that this is my own re-interpretation of Rachel's version of the character, myself and anyone else who was there at the time can vouch that Dionysus was aaaalllll me, baby LMAO
All that said, we're obviously going at it from a VERY different angle than how he was tackled in LO, but I'm hoping people enjoy his presence in the story, especially as he becomes more involved (which is very, very soon wink wink) The roles have definitely reversed here with Dionysus taking on more of a "parental" role to Kore rather than the other way around. I feel like his characterization has only grown stronger in hindsight compared to what we got in LO, especially where he's one of the only characters who beat LO to the punch and wound up being in a sort of arms race with Rachel's depiction ─=≡Σ((( つ•̀ω•́)つ

You’re starting to act just like your fascist Reggie—censoring others and trying to dictate what can and cannot be discussed in fandom. Telling people they can’t talk about politics because you, living in a first-world country, can’t handle it? You’re the one using real-world politics to justify a fictional ship with a fascist. Have you thought about how people who are genuinely anti-fascist might also dislike it in fiction? You can’t control fandom. If you want to like fascist characters, then just own it. While fiction might not feel like reality to you, for many, it is reality. Have you considered that the characters and headcanons you enjoy might reflect deeply personal experiences for others? Not everyone has the privilege to separate fiction from reality like you do.
hi feed, this message was brought to you by someone who has clearly never interacted with me ever !
WDYMMM "telling people they can't talk about politics" 😭😭 i fear that's my ENTIRE niche across two social media platforms. i fear my entire thing is politics in a fandom space + the real world. i fear that's literally what i'm known for. what 😖
i was gonna ignore this but i have so many receipts that i thought okay ! finna answer ! why not, let's entertain this <3 (below the cut because it's long)
assuming that this is a response to this post where, after watching elon perform two nazi salutes on stage, i said "hey! maybe you should stop calling people in fandom nazis for reading about a fictional character!"
what i alsooo said on that post is that it's important to discuss politics in literature (see here: doing a masters degree in english literature + politics <3). because absolutely! the DEs are crafted in a way that reflects historic events and absolutely, that's something we can discuss!
what we should also discuss is that whilst art imitiates life and life imitates art, the two do not directly reflect one another - if i read about wizards, i am not a wizard. if i read a crime book, i am not a detective. and if i read fanfic about regulus black? i am not a facist.
in regards to the censorship comment: this here is an entireeee video i made about censorship and puritanical views in fandom spaces and why this is a Bad Thing To Do (though i fear you will disagree with it because i am saying that people can read and write whatever but alas, no censorship here x)
using real world politics to justify a ship? no, not at all. i do not think ships in fandom need to be "justified" because, again, they are fiction. can they be discussed? absolutely! my tiktok is @/messrsrobyn and you will find countless videos where i dissect fandom, characters and ships. again, this is kind of my whole thing <33 nice to meet you <33 but rather for me? that post was made as a building up of (1) the mass of people in fandom during the tiktok ban saying that words have meaning when american writers say british words "wrong", but throw buzzwords around like it's nothing and (2) this is a place for escapism and safety, which is needed now more than ever and whilst discussions about politics are important, this? this ask? this is not a discussion. this is hostility, much like people just commenting "nazi" with nothing else on a jegulus post.
discussions can be had! absolutely! my entire thing is discussions in fandom. but right now i'm trying to discuss this when you have given me nothing to work with but false claims and hostility - see how this doesn't work? but alas, i'll try :)
do people read jegulus and think "wow i love voldemort and the death eaters!!! i agree with what the did here :D" or do they read jegulus and enjoy the complexity that comes with a character like him? do they enjoy how, with a character with such little canon lore, people explore things? or yk what, do they sometimes read him as a muggle where none of this matter because there's do DEs? yeah, because it's fiction. and liking a fictional character does not have repercussions on the real world.
calling someone a facist/nazi only for teading about fictional characters does - it is so incredibly important that we read immoral literature. i'm rambling now but i'm not even talking just about fandom. we NEED books that discuss these topics and we need to explore the characters within them. we NEED politics and immorality and everything like that in books because that is how we learn, understand, and prevent. reading them does make you immoral - see here: queer books being banned in the us for containing "immoral themes" and main characters doing things they deem had and awful alongside INCREDIBLYYYY important books like the handmaids tale, to kill a mockingbird, 1984, fahrenheit 451 etc etc.
we need to read these. we need to engage with them.
but in a fandom space, we also need to acknowledge that these are not real people. these are fictional characters and there's a big difference between engaging with a character because you are justifying their actions, and engaging with a character because you enjoy Exploring their character and Understanding them in as many ways as possible 🙂↕️
but we agree!! whilst fiction may not feel like reality to some people, to many it is! so have we considered that when people come to escape from the real world for a bit, or people have family members lost to past regimes; are about to enter 4 years of another regime or are holding their breath waiting for european elections to see if another far-right populist party gets in, it might sucklk to have this thrown around?
imagine dealing with alllll of that in reality, not knowing what on earth is going to happen tomorrow or what the future holds for you and the people you love, and then being called a facist online because you read about Fictional Character Regulus Black. whilst your life literally crumbles apart because of it. you are now being called the same thing that the man oppressing you and everyone you love is, because you read FanFiction.
and then finally ahem:
"not everyone has the privilege to separate fiction from reality like you do"
if you click here, you will find a tumblr post i made about this exact thing :D about how we can't separate fiction from reality
see here also: a post about the books jkr publishes under the robert galbraith pseudonym and about how we, again, cannot separate fiction from reality.
if you click here you will find my jkr playlist on tiktok which has videos in about how, again, we cannot separate fiction from reality.
what we also can't do, mind you is call someone a facist for reading a fictional character.
there is big difference between "hey! this character has facist undertones if applied irl, we could discuss this!" and "You Are A Facist For Reading It"
instead of coming and ranting to someone who has spoken extensivelyyyy about politics in this fandom space - both with fandom material and with elections, gaza, the uk riots etc etc - and is a huge advocate of dicussions and debates, put this energy into something productive.
like actual facists. real world politics and what you could be doing at a local level to help reduce the harm of Actual Facists that are in power right now. not people taking a break from Actual Facism to read fanfiction.
ta x
(p.s i'm a homeless, chronically-ill, gay, trans man. what privilege do i have in THISSS fandom space of JK ROWLINGSSSSS worlds, to separate reality from fiction? 😭)
#asks#this is such a WILD ask i probably shouldnt have answered it#but this has been a shite few days and it's 5:30am#and you annoyed me x#anyway! have some receipts. sorry this is so long!#would love to stay and talk but (completely random fun fact) i'm actually guest lecturing today at 8 :/#yeahhhh it's about book bans and censorship because yk. politics and english student#plsplspls anon 🥺🥺 do you have any notes 😖😖 i'm just so uneducated#sorry im getting mean i promise im not mean you just annoyed me x#can confirm messrsrarchives on tumblr is not a facist#incase any of yall were wondering x#byebye this was fun lets not do this again actually

I think "the problem of house elves" is really interesting in that it reveals an issue with what I suppose can be broadly categorised as "urban fantasy"?, that is to say fantasy in a modern real world setting, which nonetheless uses magical creature lore. Inevitably, as an author, you're going to purposely or inadvertently draw parallels to real world "stuff" that's ladened with baggage... and it can be really hard to make it work because readers will be raring to pick apart these kinds of analogies.
House elves are a great example of this, in that, there really are creatures called house elves (or brownies) in English folklore and they really do, in the stories, seem to enjoy doing housework and chores in exchange for things like food and shelter (and shouldn't be given clothes or they'll never come back).
However, by initially drawing a parallel to slavery with House Elf labour (a real-world very dark baggage laden issue) and then not having the time to really delve into the history and complexity of her wizard / house elf relations you end up with the narrative seeming a bit confused as to how we should feel about people having house elves as servants / slaves. On one hand, we only see "bad" families having elves, on the other, we're told Molly Weasley would like one, then we're shown that Hogwarts uses them and that they, mostly, want to work for wizards without pay or holiday. People that grew up in the wizarding world seem to view Hermione's concerns with the kind of bemusement I encountered as a vegetarian kid explaining why I didn't want to eat animals to most of the people around me. This says a lot about the way House Elves are viewed there.
House elves are not viewed as being akin to human and therefore do not fit neatly into human parallels. Dobby is presented as an anomaly because, unlike most houseelves, he does not dream of labour and being bound to a particular wizarding family. I think JKR tries to represent this through Hermione's ineffective activism, but it's clumsily done because Dobby's our first and most poignant introduction to House elves and he was being seriously abused without any protections in place. There's also the Black family situation which.... yeah.
I think a couple of paragraphs of explanation from, maybe, Dumbledore outlining, perhaps, the symbiotic magical relationship of wizards and elves, and how the Malfoys / Blacks were somehow unusual in their cruelty and disrespect to this relationship, would've done a lot to smooth at least some of this over.
The issue, I think the books very quietly imply, is actually more aligned, although not perfectly of course, in a real world sense, with animal abuse / humane treatment of animals than with human slavery, as house elves ( as folkloric creatures) crucially do want to do house work in their nature and their treatment by wizards is therefore what needs to be monitored through the introduction of protections (older Hermione will surely be championing these kinds of reforms). Not perfect of course as House Elves are sentient, talking creatures... but they're also not human beings and it does make some kind of sense that they wouldn't have the same values... it's just, slavery being OK sometimes, is really not the sort of message you want to imply through an inadvertent and imprecise parallel.
Just chiming into the house elf convo as I find this issue in fantasy writing endlessly fascinating and as an aspiring fantasy writer myself, quite frightening!
This is so well-put, I almost can't bring myself to add anything to it — really excellent and considered treatment of the ways that the elf relationship was probably intended to read differently than it did in the text. More attention to the elf/brownie legend would have gone a long way for me in fixing my unhappiness with S.P.E.W., because it would have given a canonical basis for thinking Hermione's actually just wrong about this relationship, and that she's somehow missing an important historical context. That's a great point.
Staging elves as an intermediary between humans and animals whose treatment mirrors animal rights conversations is a really smart way of talking about it, too, as it captures the moral dimension of Hermione's quest without making everyone else look abjectly terrible for not supporting it. Staging her as, say, the PETA of the Wizarding World, where everyone thinks she's campaigning to Give Copyright to Monkeys, etc., makes Ron especially seem much more reasonable. I'm going to think about your interpretation a lot in how I write house-elves in the future.
#lionheart admittedly already came down on the 'house-elf ownership is wrong and hogwarts pays the elves' side of things#so internal continuity there is sort of locked#but i'm going to be thinking about this a lot in how i approach house-elves in the future

Lab meeting doodle- been having some Thoughts about Eliksni faces ever since I realized that they don't have nostrils (oops) and I still haven't figured out what the two holes behind the eyes would be useful for. I was thinking that scent gland secretions starts off in a vasaline-like consistancy that then hardens to a more waxy substance to maintain carapace health, much in the same way that the preen gland in many birds keeps feathers waterproof and resistant to damage. The setae also help broadcast the scent to other Eliksni, giving a personal identification tag as well as transmitting information on sex, age, and general health. Humans can't pick up on the smell unless they're REALLY sniffing (or the individual hasn't had a proper scrubbing bath in forever), but to the Eliksni, it's as essential of an identification tool as faces or voices are to people
Behaviorally speaking, these secretions are usually spread across the face and neck by typical grooming gestures, such as swiping the hands over the face and running them through the crest. The scent glands behind the eyes are typically what is used for maintinance of the setae and facial carapace, while those at the end of the muzzle before the eyes are used for scentmarking close kin, friends, mates, and personal items (as the Eliksni nuzzle each other vs kiss). Nuzzling is a very intimate behavior, but it's a little more of a socially widespread gesture than human kissing because of the close-knit nature of Eliksni communities.
As expected, getting these waxy secretions on fabric SUCKS for cleaning, so many Eliksni use eggcloth for facial wrappings, as it's one of the few fabrics where that actually extends the lifespan of the fabric rather than gunks it up, similar to how human skin books actually benefit from being handled often because the oils from people's hands help maintain the leather.
Sensory bristles are more for facial expressions and auditory tracking than a visual aid like in mammals, but some similarities in bristle placement do overlap with whisker placement, like with Earth animals (at the end of the muzzle, over the eyes, etc). Eliksni auditory processing is a complex system that spans several parts of the body: facial bristles in conjunction with their bones and carapace having high vibrational sensitivity merely help them figure out where the sound is originating from, while the ear slits function pretty much as you'd expect them to.
Despite this, Eliksni hearing has a poorer overall range than those of humans, with the pitches they can hear the best being very low-frequency and very high-frequency sounds; everything else in between comes off as somewhat muddled or hard to pinpoint (the lack of subvocals in human language makes tone especially difficult for them). They're also worse at hearing fainter noises than we are. They more than make up for it in terms of having strong vision and a strong sense of smell, however, so don't think you can sneak up on one just because you're being quiet- if their rebreathers are off, they can smell you before they'll ever see you, and they can spot you in the dark with very little issue!
#destiny 2#destiny 2 headcanons#speculative biology#eliksni#eliksni headcanons#my doodles#i looove fuckin around with species that are scent-based#v. underutilized sense and thus v. easy to make a pov character come off as 'alien'#despite humans actually being pretty big on smells ourselves!

Hi Charlie Jane!
This evening I finally picked up your book "Never Say You Can't Survive" for the first time probably over a year after I bought it, and I've been reading it hungrily. I don't quite have the words for how much just the Introduction and the first few chapters have already rewired my brain of how i understand writing, and got me thinking about it in ways I had never done before. Just. Wow!
But one thing that really really helped me was your philosophy surrounding whether or not to go with a story idea based on how simple or complex it is from the start. I realized that the reason I've been struggling so much to stay with an idea for the past year, is because I was trying to have it be completely thought out before I started writing it, to have ever chapter planned meticulously so that I didn't end up not finishing it. This may sound really dumb in hindsight lol but I've had an insecurity for years about not being able to finish a project, and I wanted to give myself a guaranteed method of being able to finish it.
Of course, it hasn't worked at all. I end up so overwhelmed and feeling Stuck because I just can't figure something out, and I'm not letting myself play around with the idea enough, not letting it evolve.
I realized that some of my best works, even if unfinished for whatever reason, I started with one thing and it evolved over time.
I've been trying so hard to understand my story from the beginning, to have it all figured out so I could carefully plan it to be perfect– but this book just changed everything!
I'm going to try to shift my mindset to instead taking a shot at different story ideas (loved the dating metaphor) seeing what I can pull from them, and if it doesn't end up working, just moving on and not trying to force it.
But first I'm going to keep reading– because I've already learned so much from this book, so many thoughts and ideas have been floating around in my brain where before I was struggling to come up with any, in just the first few chapters. I'm confident that by the end of this book I'll have something in my head, whether it sticks or not.
Just wanted to say thank you for writing this wonderful book, because I've never gotten this kind of advice before that's left me feeling more confident in my ability to be a writer, while challenging myself at the same time!
Thank you so much for this!!! I’m so glad to hear the book is helpful.
I really do think every writer is different, and some writers can’t plan out their books/stories as completely in advance as others. I love going in with a plan and then getting lost in my characters and world, ending up with something completely different than what I thought I’d be writing. <3

How do you think people will react to Gabrielle and her “relationship” with lestat? I think she’ll be a popular character but there will be a lot of discourse around her. I’m most excited for her!! Im always checking on casting announcements (fingers crossed Gillian Anderson - far fetched I know) Excited for any Louis Gabrielle reactions. Even him just finding out she’s alive. A part of me loves her, her thoughts and how she decides to live as a vampire. Another part of me is hurt and frustrated at how she treats/treated Lestat even if she was going through her own abuse at the time. I hope their relationship isn’t shown in a sexy or comedic light. I think that would be a great disservice. Do you think the show will make her more malicious or show her grace?
Gabrielle... needs to and I bet will be a force of nature.
I cannot wait to "meet" her tbh - as with so many things wrt s3 it seems unreal to think about the fact that we will get to see it.
I hope/think the show will manage to portray her as the complex character she is, with all her facets.
There is no need to reduce her to one aspect - she can be sexy and malicious, cold and caring, domineering and weak. Gabrielle is a character that is very much her own.
As per her relationship with Lestat... well the show shied away from the incestuous relationship between book Louis and Claudia, they only hinted at it there - however, I do not think this will be the way for them.
I think they will go full mess.
And rightfully so, because, yes, she is his mother - and then becomes his fledlging, and his lover.
And that is just the way it is. :)

I recently finished all four books in Thomas Harris' Hannibal series and boy do I have some thoughts about the perception of Hannibal Lecter.
All four books everyone tried to convince you that he is evil and scary but in all honesty, I don't think he is (evil, that is, I'm sure he's plenty scary when he wants to be). Every psychiatrist is like 'oooooh he's a sociopath/psychopath' but actually no, he isn't, he shows a great deal of empathy - it's just highly selective. Are we not all guilty of some modicum of selective empathy? I know personally I'm going to feel a lot less empathy for a predator than I do for a victim, you know?
And that's the thing about Hannibal - the large majority of his victims were not victims in life, they were only victims in the context of Hannibal. Even as young as twelve years old, he was strange and violent, yes, but he was only violent to those that picked on people smaller and weaker than them. And if you look through his list of victims there's only a handful that make you question his morals, in my opinion (outside of the obvious moral quandary of murder).
But honestly, the biggest thing for me? Aside from how crazy intelligent and insightful he was, I was struck by how funny he was; that man was a silly goose the entire time and no one ever appreciated that. I can't imagine what it would be like to be the funniest man alive and no one ever acknowledged that. He finds so much joy in the tiny things - to the point where he can live entirely in his mind palace for long stretches because he's filled it with beauty and fascination - that he can find the humor and beauty in just about any situation, no matter how dark. He is able to enjoy his own company happily because he has created a rich tapestry of interests and appreciation for life.
He shows over and over again that he is, overall, very thoughtful and respectful - especially to women. In fact, in the books anyway, he is not attributed to killing any women. Not that the law knows about, not that we've seen from Hannibal's own POV (but the nurse! you say. I mean she didn't die lol but mostly it was just a matter of coincidence - it just happened to be her, he'd have done that to anyone as a matter of self preservation, even Barney if he let his guard down). The women that knew him socially from before his arrest all said he was courteous and incredibly complimentary, and not in a creepy way, in a very genuine way that showed appreciation. He remembered birthday's. He personalized gifts to each person's interests. In the books, he frees trapped animals even if it's inconvenient to his plans. He's kind to children even though most people would never expect him to be.
There's a couple of neat passages in Hannibal where Barney talks about Hannibal's character and motivations but this is already getting long so I'll make that another post for another day. The big take away from those passages, is that Barney is the person who spent the most time with Hannibal for almost ten years, and Hannibal spoke to him more candidly than he did anyone else (there were points where Hannibal didn't speak at all, in SOTL Chilton makes a comment about how long it's been since he's heard Hannibal's voice. In Hannibal, Barney tells Clarice sometimes he wouldn't speak for months at a time). But essentially, it is clear to Barney that Hannibal is capable of empathy, respect, and admiration. He is capable of feeling warmth and affection. The one quote from Barney that I will drop here is: "One quality in a person doesn't rule out any other. They can exist side by side, good and terrible."
Is he a good person? No. But I don't know that you can say he's an evil one either. He isn't the big bad wolf. He isn't the devil the entire series tries to make you believe. He's a man - more complex than most - but just a man nonetheless.
#and also my wife and I love him so much lmfao#literally my fav character ever written#but also to be so fair abt my analysis of this I personally do not think 'evil' is typically a concept that can be applied to people so...#hannibal#thomas harris#hannibal books#hannibal series#hannibal lecter#hannibal rising#red dragon#silence of the lambs#media analysis#my post#hannibal tetralogy

HI OMFOMGOMGGOMG okok so yes that's this- the book series is called the vampire chronicles by anne rice (theres at least like 11 books? haven't read them yet), and then there's a 90s movie called interview with the vampire (name of first book) which i haven't seen, AND THEN [this is the best one] there's a series on AMC also called interview with the vampire. the series is the one i've been posting about non-stop and spamming my insta story with, and it's kiterally the best piece of media ive ever consumed in my life- the quality, writing, score, cast, etc is immaculate and it's 2 seasons and counting... i pirated it because i dont have amc but it's on amc or amc+, and the first season is on netflix... HIGHLY recommend, very gay, very complex characters, very gothic romance- southern gothic religious trauma vibes in the first season but also other vibes that i cannot explain without spoiling- the whole cast is basically insanely talented, source material educated theater kids doing insanely talented shit for two seasons and i CANNOT RECOMMEND IT ENOUGH (literally almsot every post on here for the past like week has been about it lmaooo)
the only thing for xavi specifically is it is very bloody, and kindve gory sometimes so just like know that if you watch it... also idont think you have issues with this but there is in fact like nudity so dont watch and around parents (also very very explicitily gay)
and i will talk about it for hours idont have anyone i can talk about it too whos seen it so if you watch it please tell me pleasepleaseplease i beg🙏🙏🙏
and season three is in the works- theve posted the teaser but no actual release dates yet BUT ITS HAPPENING ANDNITS GOING TO BE SO GOOD
*one more note hehe- if the shorts hve the guy or girl in the pic below this in them, then you're seeing the clips from the series*
This conversation between Louis (yellow) and Lestat (pink) in The Tale of the Body Thief is making me insane
Like
Louis being mean to Lestat and Lestat saying hey that was not nice and Louis says I know I’m sorry it’s just I can’t live without you and it makes me crazy

redesigning my headcanon for Sebek's parents, based on important new information (SCALES)
(you can't see it but they're both wearing crocs)
#art#twisted wonderland#twisted wonderland spoilers#twisted wonderland episode 7 spoilers#twisted wonderland book 7 spoilers#they are truly the most inspiring love story of our generation#though i guess he's not dr. zigvolt since zigvolt is the clan name...#unless he took her name which i absolutely could see. why would you ever not want to be called zigvolt.#this does tie nicely in with my headcanon that sebek's siblings got more of the fae features than he did#and he has a Complex about it#i get the impression that sebek's siblings are much closer in age to each other and also have more of their dad's chill#so sebek is sort of the baby of the family and he's got a Complex about that too#i think a lot about the zigvolt family for characters who have never actually appeared#on the subject of actual canon though#i do actually really appreciate that both sebek and silver each had a little moment of reassuring each other#that this is 400 years ago and also incredibly unfortunate circumstances#and present-day reality lilia and baul love them very much#(i do think sebek is secretly baul's favorite grandkid)#it was just nice to see! especially from sebek! he is sometimes a very thoughtful boy and it's always nice to see that side of him#sebek trying SO hard to get baul to like him though 😭#and lilia being like 'aw i think you're getting kind of fond of him :)'#i love. Characters.
