zinnia rosier ✧˖ ⋆
for @adelarsims spellcasting tournament! <3 (dl under the cut!)
zinnia rosier has always been a risk taker. so, when her oldest brother bet her that she couldn't win the upcoming academy tournament, she took his challenge in stride.
the youngest of four, zinnia is no stranger to fighting her way to the top. she is headstrong, silver-tongued, and ambitious (sometimes to a fault), often diving head-first into the toughest challenges. she works hard to get what she wants, and though she means well, she has a habit of climbing over others to get what she wants.
despite her flaws, zinnia is, at her core, good-natured and compassionate, fighting hard for what she believes in and for those she holds dear. she's quick to the draw with an affinity for wand-based magic (and mischief) and spends a large portion of her free time refining her skills. when she isn't training, she can be found hanging out with her fellow contestants, obsessing over the witch's weekly: wizard of the month, or singing karaoke at her beloved siamese cat, trinket.

Is it over?
Pairings: Emily Prentiss x reader.
Summary: Set on 6x18: Lauren. If the team noticed Emily acting weird, they didn’t say anything about it. For the last two weeks, Emily had been acting strange, kind of off which was weird about Emily. Reader was the lucky person who could say that she knew Emily more than anyone else in the team, but this time...she was not sure about it anymore.
A/n: So...just like when I asked when I posted my first Calex fic; is my blog gonna turn into Marvel, SVU and Criminal Minds? Maybe so🫢 I'm obsessed with criminal minds right now (yes, a bit late, I've seen some of it before but I've always been an svu girly) and I am deeply in love with Emily (not new that I found Paget Brewster gorgeous😮‍💨). Anywayyyy, first Emily fic✨ Yes…I’ll be taking requests🫢 I dunno if some things are accurate or not so bear with me but hope you enjoy this, leave comments, hearts, whatever you like and reblog so this gets some love🫶🏻

If the team noticed Emily acting weird, they didn’t say anything about it. For the last two weeks, Emily had been acting strange, kind of off which was weird about Emily. Every once in a while, she’d crack a joke or even make fun of Morgan or Reid or anyone on the team, but nothing had been done. The cases they’ve had had been a bit of a pain, which could possibly be the reason why Emily had been acting so weird. Garcia was the first one to really say something to Emily, she had been teasing and trying to get information in case she had a secret boyfriend for the times she had been late to work, but Emily had stopped her from keep going and they just forgot about it for that moment. Reid then had asked her if she was okay and Emily had said that she was, even if she had started picking on her nails again and it was something that Reid had noticed she did when she was stressed, but again, Emily brushed it off.
The only person who could truly see Emily off work was Agent Y/n Carter, the one person that was the closest to Emily, who had always been there with Emily and for Emily, the one person that could really say that she knew more about Emily than anyone in the BAU. What they didn’t know is that y/n was not only the closest person to Emily in a friendly way, but they had been dating for the last year. No, it’s not that they didn’t trust the team, they loved them, they would do anything for them, but if they said anything about their relationship, which meant that there was a chance that they could be used against each other in case they got threatened or were hostages -which of course they hoped it never happened-. But they still wanted to keep the secret to themselves for as long as possible, and either way, they were able to enjoy it and have a relationship for them and only them.
“Hey, P! Leaving now, you need a ride?” Y/n walked to Penelope’s room and offered a smile.
“Ah, no sweet cheeks. Car is fixed, I’m driving myself now.” Penelope smiled as she grabbed her things.
Y/n nodded. “See you tomorrow then.” She was about to leave before she was stopped by Penelope’s voice.
“Hey honey?” Penelope asked softly.
Y/n turned to look at her and smiled. “Yeah?”
“Have you uh…have you talked to Emily?”
Y/n furrowed her brows as she stared at Penelope. “Uh…I mean…she was mostly with Morgan in the case so…not really. Why? Something wrong?” She tilted her head as she walked back to Penelope.
“I just…I’ve noticed that she’s been acting a bit odd.” Penelope shrugged. “I even asked her if she was preggo.” She chuckled.
Y/n chuckled softly as she shook her head. “Do we even know if she’s got a boyfriend?”
“Well, she brushed it off when I mentioned it, but…you know…she’s been late these past few days and that’s not common of her.”
Y/n nodded softly and offered a smile. “I’ll try to talk to her tomorrow when I see her. But I’m sure she’s okay, P. Just…maybe stressed.”
Penelope nodded and smiled. “She trusts you more than she trusts anyone here, honey. I’m sure she’ll let you know if somethings going on.”
“I know.” Y/n smiled. “Night love.”
“Goodnight pretty girl!”
Y/n walked to the elevator and sighed softly as the doors closed. They had been busy with the last few cases that she hadn’t really paid any attention to Emily’s attitude or behaviour, which now that she thought about it, was really wrong of her, and she felt bad about it. As she got in her car, she decided to make a few stops before she stopped by Emily’s apartment. The whole ride, she thought of what exactly she was going to tell Emily, because she knew better than to get to her and be all like ‘oh you’ve been acting weird so I thought I could come and figure out what’s wrong with you’. As much as Emily loved y/n, Emily was not exactly an open book. She finally got to Emily’s apartment and decided it was better to use her key instead of knocking on the door. She walked inside the apartment and was greeted by Sergio, she closed the door softly and as she turned, she found Emily walking out of her room with her gun in hand.
“Woah, Em! It’s me!” Y/n raised her hands as she looked at Emily.
Emily sighed heavily as she put her fun on the back of her jeans and walked to y/n. “What are you doing here?”
Y/n cleared her throat. “Uh…” she looked down at her hands and had a bag of desserts and in the other hand, she had flowers. “I uh…well…I’ve noticed that you haven’t been yourself, I thought you were tired and exhausted, so I decided to…bring something.” She offered a shy smile as she looked at Emily.
Emily’s heart warmed as she stared at y/n, smiling softly as she walked to her, grabbing the flowers, and smelling them. “They smell wonderful.” She looked up at y/n and smiled. “Thank you.”
“Anything for you.” Y/n leaned in and pecked her lips softly. “I also brought your favorite.” She smiled.
Emily chuckled softly as she nodded. “Thank you.” She walked to the kitchen and took a deep breath. She grabbed a vase to put the flowers in and filled it with water. She hated that she had to tell y/n that she couldn’t stay, all she wanted was to be held and to have y/n with her, but she couldn’t put her at risk.
The thing was her nemesis was in the city. Just a few hours ago, she had met with the person she never thought she’d ever see again, the person that she had left in her past and that had been nothing but another case for her. Ian Doyle was looking for her, and she had now put everyone at risk, and the last thing she needed, was for Ian to find out that y/n was more than just a friend and a colleague, he had no idea about her, he thought that the most important thing for Emily was her life, and the team was her family, so in a way, y/n was still very much at risk, but at least he had no idea that she was more than just a friend.
Emily walked back to the dining room and smiled at y/n. “I’m sorry…I hate to do this but I just…” she sighed. “I think I’m getting that flu that Garcia’s been talking about.” She huffed a chuckle as she stared at y/n.
Y/n tilted her head as she pouted. “So you want me to go?”
Emily smiled sadly. “I’m afraid you’ll catch it, and it’ll be a fun thing to explain to the rest of the team why we both have it.” She grinned.
Y/n rolled her eyes playfully and nodded. “I guess you’re right.” She sighed as she stared at Emily, walking to her. “Em…are you okay?”
“I am.” Emily smiled.
Y/n squinted her eyes and raised her brow. “You’re not getting tired of me, are you?”
Emily felt her heart sinking as she stared at her girlfriend. She smiled softly and walked to her, wrapping her arms around her shoulders, and resting her forehead against hers. “I love you too much to do that.” She whispered softly as she smiled.
Y/n smiled widely as she wrapped her arms around her waist. “I love you too.” She furrowed her brows. “You’re really getting sick, Prentiss. You’d have joked about it.”
Emily shrugged. “I also like to tell you that I love you, because I really do.” She smiled softly, leaning in, and kissing her lips softly.
Y/n smiled against her lips and held her as close as possible. “Thought you didn’t want to give me the flu.” She whispered against her lips once they pulled away.
“A kiss won’t hurt.” Emily chuckled softly as she looked at y/n. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”
Y/n nodded. “Sure will.” She smiled. “Save me my dessert, I’ll come eat it when you feel better.” She grinned as she walked to the door, she petted Sergio before she finally left.
Emily sighed again and felt her eyes getting watery. She hated that she had to do this, she hated that she was pushing the one person she trusted with her whole heart…but again…that sounded pretty hypocrite since y/n had no idea about her past with Ian Doyle. No one could know. She preferred to lie about it than put them more at risk.
********************
Y/n stretched as she got up from bed and yawned. After the exhausting days that they’ve had at the BAU, she had returned home and gotten herself in bed, trying to get herself to get some rest before whatever event was going to happen the next day. But right at two am, there had been a knock on her door, which woke her from her beauty sleep. She walked to the door and looked into the small hole, furrowing her brows as she noticed Emily standing right in front of the door. She opened the door and smiled sleepily.
“You lost your key again?” Y/n raised her brows as she stared at Emily.
Emily smiled softly. “I forgot it at home.”
Y/n nodded. “And you forgot your keys too?”
“I just wanted to see you.” Emily said softly.
Y/n furrowed her brows but said nothing, grabbing Emily’s hand and pulling her inside the apartment, closing the door behind her. “What’s going on, Em?” She said softly.
Emily took a deep breath as she shook her head. “I’ve just been having a hard time sleeping.”
“Then stay here with me.”
“I can’t.” Emily sighed softly. “Sergio…he’s been a pain in the ass. He hates that I leave him alone.”
Y/n grinned softly. “I’m gonna start to be jealous of him, getting all your attention.”
Emily rolled her eyes playfully. She then cupped y/n’s face in her hands, bringing their lips into a sweet and tender kiss. Emily could feel her eyes getting teary, but she stayed close to y/n and kept kissing her softly. Y/n wrapped her arms around Emily, her hands going up and down her back, her fingertips delicately touching her as she kissed Emily back. Even if Emily had this tough, bad girl persona, everyone knew that Emily had a soft spot because she was also a complete nerd, and y/n was lucky enough to say that she was able to experience it. They both pulled away slowly, resting their foreheads against each other’s, smiling softly.
“You know I love you, right?” Emily said softly, smiling at y/n.
“I know.” Y/n pulled away to look into her beautiful brown eyes as she nodded. “And I love you. A lot.” She whispered softly as she kissed her nose softly.
Emily smiled as she ran her fingers through her hair. “This whole stress will end soon.”
Y/n furrowed her brows slightly but nodded. “It will. Maybe you should consider what Rossi said about taking a vacation.” She grinned softly.
Emily chuckled softly as she nodded. “Go somewhere far away from here, no cellphones or technology…just us.”
“Well, he meant only for you.” Y/n teased.
“But I’d take you with me.” Emily smiled lovingly as her other hand stroked her cheek. “I want you with me.”
“And I’ll always be here, Em.” Y/n smiled as she leaned in to kiss her lips again. “Always.”
Emily nodded softly as she kissed her lips again, smiling sadly. “Hey uh…” she reached on her pocket and smiled softly down at her hands. “I got you something.” She looked back at y/n.
Y/n furrowed her brows and tried to look at what Emily had in her hands. “What is it?” She grinned softly.
Emily smiled softly and then opened her hand to show y/n what she had in hands, raising her brow softly. “You always mention you like it.”
Y/n’s lips parted and soon after turned into a smile, looking back up at Emily. “Em…you…you wear this necklace more than anything.”
Emily chuckled softly as she grabbed the heraldic rose pendant and moved behind y/n. She moved y/n’s hair to the side and placed the necklace delicately. “You always mentioned how you liked it…loved it, actually. And I thought maybe you should have it.” She smiled softly as she leaned down to kiss her shoulder. “It’ll look better on you anyway.” She then moved back to face y/n.
Y/n looked down at it and smiled softly. “I do love it.” She looked back at Emily as she held it. “Em-“
“Consider it an early birthday gift.” Emily grinned.
“Still two months to go, though.” Y/n raised her brow as she grinned.
“I like spoiling you, and you know it.” Emily smiled as she wrapped her arms around her and kissed her lips softly. “I gotta go, it’s late.” She whispered softly as she stared at her.
“And Sergio is gonna kill you.” Y/n grinned playfully.
Emily chuckled as she nodded. “Yes.” She looked into y/n’s eyes and smiled, leaning in to kiss her forehead softly. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow.” Y/n smiled.
Y/n stared at her until Emily closed the door and then she was gone, her hands still in the necklace. She sighed softly as she locked the door, her mind spinning as thoughts started to cloud her whole mind. There was something going on, but y/n couldn’t figure out what it was. Emily was definitely not herself, but if she pushed, Emily would only brush it off and she’d say nothing was going on, but the more she focused on Emily, the more worried she was about her. But she was right, this would soon end, and they would be able to go back to their lives.
********************
The whole time they were at the BAU, y/n kept an eye on Emily, trying to focus on what Hotch and the rest of the team was saying about this whole case, but she couldn’t help but see every move that Emily made. She was quieter than usual, which was not normal of her, she always had so much to say about the cases, y/n always found Emily being the best profiler in the team, of course they had their own thing, and she didn’t just think about it because she was her girlfriend, but she truly admired Emily so much, it surprised her when Emily gave her attention and actually wanted to be with her, even with the slight age difference, Emily still had her eyes on y/n. So yes, y/n knew Emily better than anyone in that room, but lately, it seemed like what she knew meant nothing.
Once Emily and Derek were back, y/n couldn’t help but keep her eyes on Emily, but this time, her full attention was on her. Every reaction, every movement, every facial expression, she was trying to get anything she could. As they continued to talk about the case, y/n noticed the way Emily became more tense about it and the way she kept fidgeting with her hands. Before anything else could happen, once the team was a bit more distracted, y/n pulled Emily with her and pulled them inside the bathroom, locking the door behind her.
“What are you doing?” Emily asked, brows furrowed as she stared at y/n.
Y/n crossed her arms as she looked at Emily. “What is going on, Emily?”
Emily shook her head. “I don’t-“
“You do know.” Y/n said, trying not to sound upset or worried. “Emily, I can see the way you’re acting. You never get to work late, even when we have spent the night together. You have barely eaten anything, you’ve barely been sleeping, I can notice. You haven’t been yourself, Em.”
“Baby…I don’t really wanna talk about it.” Emily rubbed her hand on her face as she looked down at the floor.
Y/n shook her head. “I know you don’t. But Emily…you’re not okay. I can tell. I’m here, why won’t you talk to me?” She walked close to Emily and placed her hands on her shoulders, sliding them down to grab her hands. “Please. I’m worried about you, Em.” She whispered softly.
Emily shook her head. “I just…” she sighed as she looked back at y/n. “…I’ve been having these nightmares, I’m exhausted. I want this to end. I need it to end.” She felt her eyes getting teary as her hands landed on y/n’s cheeks, stroking them softly. “I’ll be okay.”
Y/n shook her head as she sighed, wrapping her arms around Emily’s waist. “I’ll stop pushing…but Em, seriously…I’m here.” She looked into her eyes as she smiled. “Come to me. Talk to me.” She whispered softly.
Emily nodded as she leaned down to kiss her lips. “I love you.” She whispered softly against her lips.
Y/n smiled softly. “I love you too.” She kissed her nose softly and then her lips again.
Emily sighed as she pulled away and smiled softly. “We should get back.”
Y/n only nodded and then walked out of the bathroom with Emily, making sure that no one had seen them. As they went back with the rest, y/n still had her attention on Emily but said nothing more. As for Emily, she knew that sooner or later, y/n would figure out what was going on, the whole team would figure it out and there was nothing that would stop them, so she had to act fast. Things were only getting worse, more people were dying, and it was on Emily, and the thought of it was eating her alive. If she didn’t do anything now, he’d soon get to all of them. He’d get to y/n.
********************
Y/n furrowed her brows as she walked around the halls, looking around. After they had mentioned the profile of Ian Doyle, they had gathered around to make a plan and see where they could go next and that’s when she noticed that Emily was nowhere to be found. She saw her once she arrived back with Morgan, she had a worried look, her face had entirely changed and y/n was sure this had something to do with this whole thing, but if she pushed, she knew that she wouldn’t get anything anyway. Once Hotch dismissed everyone, that’s when she noticed she was gone. What was she doing?
“Guys, I cannot find Emily anywhere.” Y/n walked to them and stared at all of them. “What?”
Rossi sighed. “We believe Emily is involved with this case.”
Y/n furrowed her brows. “What?” She shook her head. “No…she would’ve said something. What do you mean involved?”
“Years ago, she was undercover. Weeks ago, she mentioned a name, Lauren Reynolds. Saying she was gone. I believe that was her undercover name.”
Y/n felt dizzy for a moment as she stared at them, not sure what was going on. Emily would’ve told her the truth, as much as she had wanted to protect them, she wouldn’t have lied to her. But she did…that’s why she had been acting weird, she had been pushing her away, she didn’t even let her stay at her apartment. That visit at two a.m., the necklace, Emily repeatedly telling her that she loved her…Emily was hiding it so y/n wouldn’t find out. Emily was a hopeless romantic, that was not a secret, but the way she had been acting, the way she had spoken to y/n…it all made sense now. She was trying to protect her, Ian was after them, and Emily was going to deal with this alone.
It was like her body was acting on its own once they moved to review the information JJ had. She didn’t even know when JJ had arrived, but she was there, she was there to help with the case. Y/n only sat there and tried to focus on everything about which they were talking. Emily had been undercover…she had been one of Ian’s lovers…his lover. She had been involved with him and she was one of the reasons he had ended up behind bars. She had never actually asked much about Emily’s past jobs, Emily always told her about her life, she knew the nerd she was, the silly movies she loved to watch, the books she read, she knew her routine in the morning and at night, what annoyed her and what she liked. She knew Emily. Right? She knew her, she just…didn’t know this part. Emily trusted her. Or maybe not.
“Carter…did you know about this?” Derek snapped as he looked back at y/n, making her snap out of her trance.
Y/n furrowed her brows as she stared at him. “W-What?”
“You’re the closest to Emily. You spend more time with her than with any of us. Did she tell you any of this?” Derek stood up and kept his eyes fixated on y/n.
“Derek…no. I had no idea…I-“
“Please.” Derek scoffed. “You always say it, you know more about Emily than any of us. Why should I believe that you didn’t know any of this?”
“Morgan.” Hotch warned as he stared at him.
“No!” Derek looked at everyone and then went back to y/n. “You and Emily have been hiding this from us for days. She’s now on the run and we have no idea where she could be. So enlighten us, Carter. Tell us where she is so this ends now.”
Y/n stood up from her seat, feeling anger growing in the pit of her stomach. “I have no idea…where she is, Morgan.” She felt her eyes getting teary as she stared at him. “I didn’t know anything about this. She never told me. Trust me, I’m not stupid. If I knew where she was, I wouldn’t be sitting here listening to your crap. I wouldn’t have let her leave. You were the last one with her, what did she tell you?”
“She said nothing. Because she doesn’t trust us. Apparently, you included.” Derek snapped.
“That’s enough.” Rossi said as he stared at both of them.
“Why should I believe you? Why should I believe that you’re not covering for Emily? You’re best friends. You two are literally glued to each other, and you want me to believe that you’re not hiding anything from us? Emily put you up to this, but this has to end now, Carter!” Derek yelled as he walked to Carter. “You’re the person she trusted the most, huh? If she’s your best friend, then you’ll tell us whe-“
“She was more than my best friend! I love her!” Y/n snapped as tears rolled down her cheeks as she stared at Derek. She sobbed softly as she took a step back, feeling everyone’s eyes on her. She looked down at the floor as she shook her head. “We’ve…we’ve been dating for a whole year…we didn’t say anything because…we didn’t want anyone to use us against each other in case something went south on a case.” She said between sobs. “She didn’t tell me anything, Morgan.” She looked back up at him. “You’re right. Maybe she didn’t trust me. Maybe she just wanted to protect me. I don’t even know what to think. I don’t know what’s going on. So please…back off, and let’s focus on finding Emily.”
Everyone in the room said nothing more about the subject, Rossi and Morgan decided to go to Emily’s apartment and y/n went over her bag and handed them the key, staring at Morgan as she did and then leaving the room. She could’ve offered to go with them, she could’ve said that she would be the one going, but she knew that if she did, she wouldn’t want to leave, and she was now a bit afraid of what she might find there. She wasn’t upset…she wasn’t mad…at least not at the moment, she was just…confused.
********************
Y/n felt like she was numb at that point, only focusing on what they had to say about the case and following them around, barely saying anything. She was hoping that she’d wake up from this nightmare, that maybe, just maybe, everything was in her head, that she was actually asleep, and this would end soon. For a moment, she tried to go and clear her mind for a bit, deciding that Penelope could help at least a little bit, but as she walked to her office, she heard her talking and then she figured out what she was doing. She tried to swallow back her tears as she walked to her, offering a small as she turned on her chair.
“Hey, sweet girl.” Penelope said softly as she offered a small smile.
“Hi.” Y/n smiled softly and crossed her arms. “So…we figured out if Emily had a boyfriend, huh?” She chuckled softly.
Penelope nodded as she smiled. “I always thought you guys looked cute. I’m happy you’re actually a couple.”
Y/n smiled softly as she nodded. “Thanks.” She cleared her throat. “Any luck with the phone numbers?”
Penelope shook her head. “No…I’ve left a message in all of them.”
Y/n nodded as she sighed. “Do you think I could uh…could you…give me at least one to try it out?”
Penelope smiled as she turned her chair and wrote down one of the phone numbers, and then turned to look at y/n, handing her the post it. “I just tried this one, is the last one I found.”
Y/n grabbed it and stared at it for a moment, smiling softly as she looked back at Penelope. “Thanks, P.” She nodded before she left.
Y/n looked around the hallway and noticed no one was there, so she for her phone out and dialed the number. She bit her lip softly as she waited, part of her hoping that she’d answer and the other part just waiting to be sent to voicemail. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath as she heard the voicemail tone. “Hey Em…it’s me, y/n. Uh…Penelope gave me this number, we’re not even sure if you have it anymore or not…” she huffed a chuckle. “…I don’t even know what to say. I just want you to know that…I love you. I won’t ever stop doing that.” She sniffled, biting her lip softly as she tried to swallow back her sobs. “Just come back, Emily…please. We can fix this together. I just need you back with me.” She let out sobs as she looked shook her head. “Come back to me.” She sighed as she ended the voicemail and closed her phone, putting it back in her pocket.
Emily sighed as she closed her eyes for a moment. She was exhausted, she was tired, she wanted this whole thing to end, and the worst thing about this, was that she had no idea how this would end. She wanted to cry, she wanted to scream, she felt helpless but she knew she had a reason and purpose, she needed to put an end to this; he wasn’t going to win, not as long as Emily could stop him. She looked down at her phone and furrowed her brows as she noticed two voicemails. Her heart stopped for a second as she heard Penelope’s voice, her eyes getting teary. She hated so much that she was doing this to them, she knew maybe they’d hate her, but she was doing this for them.
She opened the last voicemail and she felt her heart sank, for a moment, her whole world had stopped. It was y/n. She was sure Penelope had given her the phone number. She closed her eyes as she felt l tears rolling down her cheeks. She never meant to hurt y/n like this, she never wanted to lie to her, she never meant to hide this from them, but she thought she’d be able to live with it and that nothing would ever happen, he’d stay in jail forever and no one in her life would know about it. But she was wrong. And she hated it. She wanted to drive back to her lover, hold her and kiss her, but she had to protect her, she had to protect her family.
“I love you…I’m sorry.” Emily whispered softly before she turned off her phone and took a deep breath.
********************
The whole ride to the Warehouse, y/n tried to keep her head clear, thinking that they would be able to find Emily and that this whole thing would finally end, that she’d be able to bring her home and both of them would work on this together. For a moment, as she heard more and more about Emily’s undercover and Ian, she felt herself getting angry at the whole situation. It was clear everyone was upset at the thought of Emily getting involved with someone like him, and she was not gonna lie, it upset her too, but then all she could think about was Emily; was she okay? Was she safe? Y/n knew Emily was a fighter, she could protect herself, but what if Ian had hurt her badly? She couldn’t help the negative thoughts that filled her mind. She grabbed onto her necklace and kissed it, trying to swallow back her tears. She flinched a bit as she felt a hand on her shoulder, and she turned to look at Derek, who offered a small smile.
Y/n decided she’d go in with Derek, she followed them around and her heart started racing as she walked through the warehouse. For a moment, she tried to think that this was just another victim, she wanted to try to concentrate the best she could and not lose her posture. She could almost hear Strauss yelling at her for getting involved even though she knew she should’ve stayed behind. When the lights went out, she felt like she was in a nightmare, following Derek as she kept looking around us, making sure to not miss any door or room. At some point, Derek told y/n to go first to have her back, and just as she walked into the very end of the warehouse, her heart dropped at the sight of Emily on the floor…bleeding.
“Emily!” Y/n dropped to her knees and placed her gun on the floor. “Derek, call an ambulance!” She placed her hand on Emily’s and looked at her, tears rolling down her cheeks. “Emily? Em…please answer me. I’m here.” She said almost in a whisper.
Emily opened her eyes weakly and stared back at y/n. “Y/n?” She whispered weakly.
Y/n nodded and smiled through her tears. “Yes. It’s me. I’m here.” She placed her hand on Emily’s cheek, stroking it softly. “C’mon, baby. I need you to stay with me, help is coming.”
Emily’s breathing was weak, she tried to keep her eyes opened to look at her lover, but it was becoming harder. “Love…I’m…msorry.”
“Help! Please!” Y/n turned to look at Derek with tears in her eyes and then went back to Emily. “No, Em. I know why you did this. I love you, okay? I’m not mad, I’m not upset. I’m here. Just please, please stay with me. I need you, my love. Please.” She cried out as she leaned down to kiss her forehead. “Please, Em…”
“I…love you.” Emily breathed out and closed her eyes.
“Emily! Please! Hurry up!” Y/n looked down at her and sobbed. “Emily!”
The time stopped as y/n kept yelling Emily’s name, and as she felt Derek’s hands on her trying to pull her back, y/n kept yelling and trying to get away from Derek. The paramedics arrived and were all over Emily, y/n could only feel Derek’s arms wrapped around her trying to stop her from moving, and y/n could not do anything else than let herself cry and scream in Derek’s arms. This was not happening. This was not supposed to happen. At some point she felt Derek picking her up and helping her walk so they could follow the ambulance, y/n was sobbing uncontrollably so they didn’t let her go in the ambulance with her.
The whole way to the hospital seemed like a movie, y/n felt like she was not there, she was just numb, and she had gone completely quiet. She could feel JJ and Derek holding her, but she only sat there, her eyes glued to the ambulance in front of them. And then, as if she had transported, she was in the visitors lounge with the whole team. She didn’t know when or how they had all arrived there, even Penelope. She had sat down alone, only staring down at her hands as she fidgeted with her fingers. She thought that she had ran out of tears because none were coming out of her eyes, she could feel her head throbbing, her eyes were swollen and her whole body was trembling. If this is a nightmare, just wake up. Wake up now. She kept repeating in her head over and over again. In the corner of her eye, she saw a figure moving, making her turn her face to find JJ and she stood up rapidly to walk to JJ.
“JJ?” Y/n asked in a whisper as she walked to her. She furrowed her brows when she didn’t say anything. “JJ…say something.” She made a pause and shook her head as there was still silence coming from JJ.
“No…” Penelope whispered softly, her voice breaking.
“Say something!” Y/n’s bottom lip trembled as she sobbed quietly. “Please…”
“She never made it off the table.” JJ said softly, but rapidly, as if she had pushed herself from saying those words.
Y/n felt her like time stopped once again as JJ’s words kept replying in her mind. She could hear Penelope and Spencer crying, she could hear them in the background, but all she could do was sit back down, just staring into nothing as her mind processed JJ’s words. She felt someone touching her shoulder, but she couldn’t make up the words that were coming out of their mouth, her mind had shut down entirely and her body couldn’t react. At some point she felt something wet on her face and she processed in her mind that she was crying and then her mind registered where she was. She looked up and found Penelope by her side, wrapping her arms around her and that’s when she felt her whole body giving up and she started sobbing again, screaming loudly as Penelope tightened her grip on her. She was living in the nightmare.
********************
“I really wish you would’ve told me, Em…I could’ve probably helped you.” Y/n whispered softly, tears rolling down her cheeks. “I miss you terribly.” She sobbed quietly.
“Y/n?” Derek asked softly as she stood beside her.
Y/n cleared her throat as she smiled sadly. “She gave me her necklace. The day before, she came to my apartment at two a.m. I guess she thought that…maybe if she went that late, maybe they wouldn’t be watching her or something.” She shrugged softly as she looked down at the grave. “She seemed so…worried but she was reassuring me that she was okay.” She huffed a chuckle. “I knew she was not, but I didn’t push. I let her have control. She kissed me and left.” She shook her head as more tears rolled down her cheeks. “I should’ve pushed.”
“We know she wouldn’t have told you anything anyway.” Derek sighed. “She wanted to protect us. Protect you.”
Y/n nodded. “I hate her for that.” She shook her head. “I should be upset that she didn’t tell me anything, that she got involved with him.” She sighed. “But I’m upset that she let this happen and I couldn’t be there to save her.”
Derek nodded. “We did what we could.”
Y/n looked up at Derek as she cried. “Did we?” She cried out.
Derek stared at her and wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her to him and kissing her forehead softly. “I’m sorry for how I spoke to you.”
“I forgive you.” Y/n whispered softly as she rested her head against his shoulder. “I’m sorry too.”
Derek shook his head. “We’re good, princess. And I’m here.”
Y/n nodded. “I know. I’m here too.” She sighed as she let more tears roll down her cheeks.
“So…wanna tell me how it all began?” Derek grinned as he looked down at y/n.
Y/n huffed a chuckle as she wiped her tears. “Wouldn’t you like to know.”
“I do too.”
Y/n turned to look at Penelope and smiled softly. “You’re still here.”
Penelope smiled through her tears. “I didn’t want to leave you, sweet cheeks.”
Y/n smiled as she extended her hand for Penelope to take it. She then looked back at the grave and smiled. “I think Emily would love for me to tell you guys about how it all started.” She nodded softly as she knelt down and sat on the grass, followed by Penelope and Derek.

Here's the thing that's niggled at me about Emily as Unit Chief in seasons 12 to 15. I love Emily as Unit Chief but at the same time, I don't think the writers dialed in Emily as Unit Chief.
The times when she's really great as Unit Chief were when she laid down the law like never losing another team member to Scratch ever again. Or the time after the team seemed to be spinning out and Emily put her foot down and gave the team their marching orders.
It felt in the first years Emily was reluctant to always play the team leader card. She's okay delegating but didn't want to have the distance that comes with the position.
And then Evolution happens and I love that between seasons 15 and 16, Emily became more comfortable with her power. It's become like a second skin. She can joke around but also snap to becoming the Unit Chief/Team leader.
I think she's learned to calibrate the dials between leader and friend. And can now easily slip into being a good friend and a leader.
Emily's time as Section Chief honed those skills and she's more free using lies and manipulation as tools in her arsenal.
It’s a big departure from Hotch’s leadership style.
Hotch had a problem with Jordan lying to a family to get results. Emily quizzed Hotch about this. Hotch outlined why it bothered him (Inget his point but also I found his reasons flimsy). Emily followed Hotch’s rule and for the duration she worked with the team and he was her Unit Chief, Emily kept to it.
Also, a few years out of spy work / undercover work, Emily was also not keen on lying to get results. She wanted something “clean”.
But after time in London, Emily became comfortable with her capabilities and the reality that she is good walking the gray margins. As long as she could protect her team.
I also think it’s a mark of how comfortable she’s become with them that she’s more open showing her hand about lying or manipulating people.
(See: Openly manipulating Jill into going back into the BAU.)
Also, I think a big part why Emily feels more like she’s got team leader down is Paget Brewster infusing more swagger to Emily.
The Costume department finally nailed down Emily's look as Unit Chief. Her clothes in 200 were posh. But when Emily took over as Unit Chief in season 12, it felt like they couldn’t make up their mind.
Some of her outfits during that time were too casual for her role as BAU Unit Chief.
And then Evolution started and Emily started wearing more suits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it worked!
I hated the wig they used for Emily in seasons 14 onwards when Paget had such a stylish bob!
Paget's real hair looked 1000% better than the wigs!
(Speaking of bad hair -- what... why is Tara Lewis's hair in season 16 hair.... styled that way? It was also not great.)
TLDR, I’m glad the writers finally got Emily’s leadership style. My personal headcanon is that in London while she was friendly with her staff there was a palpable distance between her and the teams she ran.
And, it was lonely. It’s why when she was asked to takeover the BAU Emily leapt up at the chance. But she didn’t want the same distance and the BAU team were her family, so she had a little trouble balancing the dials of close friendship and being the Boss.
She didn’t want it to go too far into how she ran the London office. I think the promotion to Section Chief and some members moving to different departments and leaving also allowed Emily to reevaluate. Running different teams helped Emily do that, as well as juggling her job and jumping through Bailey’s hoops.

My hottest Community takes:
Britta deserved better, especially after finding out that the real Dinosaur Story was actually way worse than described in the show. Her parents are horrible people. The fact that the group sides with them makes me genuinely sick to my stomach.
Jeff’s (and Abed’s) writing got worse in season 5+6. It’s like they were playing the tag team of “who’s gonna be an asshole today”. Especially the Hinkey comics episode. It was so fucking out of character for Abed. And then the giant hand episode was so out of character for Jeff.
I really hope Paget Brewster returns as Frankie for the movie, got married, and only refers to their partner as “my spouse”. Everyone’s trying to figure out if she got married to a man or a woman but at the end of the movie it’s revealed her SO is non-binary, and still nobody knows if she’s gay or not. I think it would be funny.
About Britta's trauma with the "dinosaur man"
Britta's dinosaur story is... definitely something. Here's a YouTube video with all the scenes that show it. This has also been confirmed by Dan Harmon on Reddit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's pretty disturbing that they made the characters take her parent's side. I honestly didn't even notice that was a part of Britta's backstory until I saw all of this. I didn't binge watch Community: I watched 4 episodes on the weekend with my dad. I don't know. If you have any more info on this, I'd like to read it.
About Jeff and Abed's writing on S5+S6
I feel like that happened to most of the character on S6, though. I already did a post before talking about my feelings about S6 (you can look for it on #wingamy rants) but, yeah, I didn't like it at all. Most characters just became either unlikable or boring to me.
About Frankie Dart
That is such a Frankie thing to do. Petition to make this cannon

Liability
Paget Brewster x Platonic Fem!reader
Tumblr media
Summary: Paget pulls you away at your parents party after seeing you with a man almost older than her
Warnings: comfort hurt, angst, crappy parents, angel Paget
Paget pulled you aside at your parent's party, your date had been an easy thirty years older than you "tell me what's going on Y/n/n?" she spoke softly she had watched you grow up. Swallowing as you sat on your bed Paget followed suit "the truth is, I am a toy, that people enjoy" you looked at your hands unable to meet the woman.
"Until all of the tricks, don't work anymore" you began sobbing "and then they are bored of me, I know that it's exciting running through the night" you added as Paget threw her arms protectively around you. "But every perfect summer's eating me alive until you're gone" you were angry not at Paget but at yourself, at your parents "better on my own" you muttered breaking out of her grasp.
"They say, you're a little much for me" throwing a picture of your parents across the room bitterly "you're a liability" you huffed clenching your fists and reaching for the next frame. "You're a little much for me" you dropped the frame of your best friend "so they pull back, make other plans" tugging at the roots of your hair, your bedroom floor covered in picture frames "I understand" you turned to the older woman.
"I am a liability" you cried but she only shook her head "oh Y/n/n, no you're not" Paget whispered loud enough for you to hear "you're not a liability, you're not too much not to me never to me". Pulling you into her arms one more as you stood in the middle of the room "baby, you're only sixteen that man shouldn't be here with you and your parents should be protecting you not handing you to danger, oh honey" she cried with you.
For the first time, you no longer felt like a  liability, chasing after affection, you felt safe and loved as Paget pressed her lips to your temple

Finally on Adult Swim originals, favorite character from the originals from 2019 - onward era (notably, live action slowed down at this point and shows reduced to just 1-2 premiering per year now): Tigtone, Lazor Wulf, Momma Named Me Sheriff, Beef House, Three Busy Debras, YOLO, Birdgirl, Tuca & Bertie, Teenage Euthanasia, Smiling Friends, Royal Crackers, Rick & Morty the Anime, and Invincible Super Girl (okay, it just came out but still)? Skipping Primal, Unicorns Warriors Eternal, and JJ Villard's Fairy Tales since the CN Studios miscellanous ask covers them. Also skipped My Adventures with Superman since WB Animation ask covered it. I know this is a lot but I'm positive you haven't seen a good amount of those so I got more comfortable just lumping all of 2019 onward in one era.
Also noticing by 2023, Adult Swim got more preferred between Cartoon Network losing their primetime hours of 5-8 PM to Adult Swim that year (meaning there's more Adult Swim hours than Cartoon Network hours now), stuff intended for Cartoon Network moving to Adult Swim such as My Adventures with Superman, Unicorns Warriors Eternal, and Invincible Super Girl, and even the nostagic blocks such as Checkered Past (showcasting the big CN originals from the Cartoon Cartoons era) and Toonami Rewind (throwback to the original Toonami from 1997-2008 with Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z Kai, and Naruto on the block) landing on Adult Swim over Cartoon Network.
ON the latter thing, yeah. I think Adult Swim is slowly eating CN, airing content that's fine for kids too, simply because WBD is carring less and less about cartoon network and children's cartoons in general. So it makes more sense to pivot to something that in their greasy eyes is making money. It's not all bad as checkered past and the shows mentioned are still fine for kids, but it is noticable.
Just going with what I did last time and wish I'd done sooner: If I don't mention something, I didn't see it. ALONSY!
Beef House: I loved this one. Genuinely loved it. I don't have a faviorite character as it's been a while but Tim and Eric parodying a stock sitcom with a WACCKKKKYYYY premise is perfect. IT's a real shame this didn't get a season 2. It was funny, offputting and just my kind of nonsense.
Three Busy Debras: I like what i've seen, a bizzare series about three women all named debra and a stepford suburb. It's bizzarely perfect. I need to see more.
YOLO: YOLO is great, and it's not a huge suprise given it comes from smiling friends co creator micheal cusak. Season 1 is decent and it has this weirdly specific feel that makes for the best adult swim shows: it fits in well with weird cahos for the sake of it and what not, but is distinctly australian, and uses it's ugly animation perfectly. Like Smiling Friends after/alongside it, it LOOKS like it was made cheap but is actually incredibly intricately crafted. It's good fun.
Birdgirl: Was a disappointment. Paget Brewster was already having a hell ofa day voice acting wise with Ducktales, so having her return to this early role was a great idea in theory. In concept.. it didn't really work. Trying to do a sequel to harvey birdman but throwing all it's hannah barbera characters out was a mistake. Judy is more likeable here as she had about two gags in the original, but the show itself never really seems to come together all that well from the few eps i've seen. I just could not get into it.
Tuca and Bertie: Speckle. He's the best boy.
Tumblr media
Tuca and Bertie is sadly done, but it remains one of adult swims best shows ever. I might have to list my faviorites when this is over. While WBD didn't keep it going as long as they should have, unlike a LOT of shows under their tyranny they at least gave it the second chance it deserved after Netflix cancelled it in less than a month, a trend that's continued and continues to make no sense.
So as a result of this monumentally dumb decision Adult Swim picked the show up and thus one of the best shows of the decade got a proper run. What we got was fantastic, a show that's creative and adult, but in a nuanced way tackling issues like sexual assault and workplace abuse with grace. The show feels like the warmer compliment to Bojack, the series sister show thanks to both having designs by LIsa Hanawalt.
While Bojack focuses on a more broken world with a seriously flawed main character, Tuca and Bertie is more optimistic. It won't hestitate to punch you in the gut repeatedly, but ther'es a light at the end of the tunnel. Things CAN get better. And given the truly awful shit that just happened, it's a message we need: things can suck: breakups happen, abuse happens, your world can be dark.. but you are loved and we can get through it together. It's also really fucking funny and has creative worldbuilding, taking the simple design choice of having plant people and playing around with as they go to the point Tuca is eventaully vociing a tree voiced by Matthew Rhys.. which is distracting and was for @jess-the-vampire as he uses the same voice for both characters. It's diffrent enough to still be good voice acting, but it's weird hearing that voice as a supportive loving boyfriend with a drinking problem.
Teenage Euthnasia; I could not get into this one.
Smiling Friends: Whenever I see your smiling face, I have to smile myself because I love youuuuu... yes I do. Alan, though Jombo is a close second
Tumblr media
Smiling Friends is a masterpiece. I'm still mildly sore about this season due to the doug walker cameo as.. come on guys. Come the fuck on. You know what he's done. Come on. Come onn. But otherwise this season just made a great show greater and both seasons are some of adult swims best.
Smiling Friends was helpful in my growth as an animation fan as it showed things like how to use animation frames to make characters feel just slightly off, and is a wonderful blend of styles. Like I said witH YOLO the show looks like a cheap adult cartoon, and budget isn't everything as a lot of adult swims earliest shows were made on a paperclip an da piece of string and still are amazing, but uses every inch of it's budget in creative ways. It's weird as hell and you never know what to expect with an episode. The two leads are perfectly fleshed out: Pim being optimstic and naive, CHarlie being a mess with a messier extended family and a drinking problem, and the cast is perfectly supported by Alan and Mr Boss (And Glep but he's more of an accsorry), an uptight unplesant but hilarious type a asshole, and a weird goof.
The show is a near perfect string of jokes, creative concepts and punches to the face of black comedy and real genuine depth. It also gave us this gag
Tumblr media
Which is so sadly relevant and useful and comes off twice as great coming from the same company that does this the worst and i'm damn certain Cusak and Hadel know that. A masterpiece I only hope gets better... just keep doug walker out of it.
Rick and Morty the Anime: I tried the first ep, didn't really gel with it and have too much piled up to really be intrested in going back
INvincible Fight Girl: I've only seen an episode and a half of this but DAMN do I love it. A wonderful tribute to shonen anime and wrestling, two things I dearly love perfectly smushed together. It fills the void in my heart left by OK KO , having that same nice mix of genine characters and a batshit insane world. I mean I already heaar ther'es a character named MBrandon. It presents this weird hyper world in it's own way, taking it, like ok ko did for the most part, earnestly, whcih adds to the comedy and allows us to feel for andy as she goes on her journey. This one has all the makings of a true classic
Overally I think the networks in a good place: it';s got some stacked shows, is doing renewals and like the dc sid eof things seems to be better than anything should be under WBD's thumb. There's still some bullshit like the uzumaki fiasco, but so far adult swim seems far safer than it has any right to be in this horrifying climate for animation and I welcome that and pray to god it dosen't change.

it's hot as balls here so I guess instead of a nap, it's Time for me to watch the finale, CME 17x10.
Spoilers and nonsense under the cut.
- I can't remember what happened last week. Oh, yeah. Ok
- Toodles, ha ha
- oh RIGHT. Now I remember. My incandescent Nate rage lol.
- I should not watch this mid-afternoon. Can't see shit
- why would Rebecca's mom know about whatever's going on lol
- minimal loss still ringing in my ears a bit. Sadly (bc this is not that)
- Oh Nicholas d'agosto is in this. Bailey?!
- they did SHIT ALL with the immediate aftermath of the cliffhanger. Ok
- fuck I have to switch to a different room it's too hard to see
- ope. he dead. didn't last long, did he. I did giggle at the dripping blood trail
- sorry that explosion that knocked Prentiss over was really funny
- so their cells were designed to create those bonds
- ok Prentiss is "on trial". yeah, who is we?
- I'm sorry every time they say "Peter B." it gives me bachelor/bachelorette related hives. Another symptom of paget-brewster-fan syndrome. will I ever recover
- is there a weird lack of urgency? Like, remembering back to when scratch kidnapped emily I feel like there was more panic among the team. Hm
- Dave, try telling people what you're thinking and where you're going some time
- uh oh. Is the B for Bailey?
- ah. hm. Pete.
- guys, where are we? and what are we doing here?
- not the black and white flashbacks again.
- EXCUSE ME. "I HAVE A SISTER" a whatnow. is she playing Bailey again
- if I could see the things on my teevee screen I could probably figure out who Pete Bailey is played by. his voice is familiar. Wait, is that the guy who played Wyatt in The Fosters? wow ok
- what a mess.
- loving PG's UFO earrings
- this is confusing as hell. and a lot of exposition
- Rebecca's "fuck you" to Vinny was lovely
- fucking hell this is very confusing.
- JJ "this is Emily"...girl I will always love hearing you say her name
- lol I love when the show *almost* roasts profiling
- did she say "your boyfriend's dead because you shot him babe"? why does this feel off to me? It seems too emotional, too angry? Emily's still off kilter?
- THIS FUCKER. YOU LEAVE JENNIFER JAREAU ALONE
- WHATTT. Penelope Garcia with the stare down?! what am I watching
- please break his face jj (but don't, bc he wants you to).
- damn. but also now we've got the exploitation of two female characters we know...and for what? and I think it's safe to assume JJ's not planning to tell Voit's wife...so we're back in not being honest with people territory... what is the point of all this?
- a blue-flamer? that's a new term to me
- "he had a drive...I used to have it..." hmmmmm
- there's a fucklot going on in here.
- well this is not great for our heroes...
- the stakes do not feel high enough for the story they're telling. like...do we really believe emily/the team is in imminent danger? (we do not.)
- omg how convenient, NOW they figure out is a trap lol
- oh sure the projector's just hooked up to the Internet
- ??????
- [god jj is so attractive]
- but what is this like...CW show hero shot montage thingy
- sorry the silly little troublemaker gibberish certificate on the wall in this scene with Clark Gregg is sending me
- "discretion is the better part of valor" and the shame on Emily's face at that
- party at PG's house
- OH NO. NOOOOO. TYLER APPLIED TO THE FBI. OH NOOOOOO. oh no im so shocked
- JJ "I have never been that high, ever" so I was right! she for sure has partaken before
- "we were more miserable apart than together" what a RINGING ENDORSEMENT for your relationship hahahahahaha 🤣
- Rebecca is looking v cute
- I can't with this show. Ahahaha god I'm laughing so hard. I can't explain to anyone how much I love and dislike criminal minds. What it has become. It delights me so much and it is so disappointing.
I'm going to have to rewatch this episode. There's a lot going on here. I will miss Emily Prentiss forever and always. She left some part of herself in London or whatever, and didn't return when Paget came back to the show. I thought her personality returned a bit in s16, and it did...but I don't know if I know her, this her. Anyone else?
The fact they are keeping on Tyler is not surprising. And I don't super care about it, I find him fairly inoffensive in himself, BUT I fear this means Luke will continue to be sidelined and I'm bummed at that. Maybe they will continue having these two bond and that will give Luke more screentime at least. To be extra funny FBI HR should just reject him outright and the team has to do increasingly inane workarounds to keep using him.
And that Voit is still around... Also not surprising given how much they like Zach Gilford. I personally am not tired of him so much as.... confused about what they're doing with him. With Gold Star they made Voit out to be some sort of manipulative genius, kind of mirror universe Reid. But where can they go from here?
And JJ, my beloved. I don't even know what to say there.
Rossi's still hallucinating. Wonder if he will ever do his 4 hours a day therapy lmao.

Another woman character that deserved better was Megan Donner from CSI: Miami. Oh, and let's not forget what happened with Holly Gribbs from CSI. All because they weren't well liked by fans because they were being depicted in ways they didn't like.
I mean, look at what happened with Megan Donner, for example. She lost her husband who was a police officer in the line of duty and took time off before she returned to her job. I actually think she had Horatio's job before she took her much needed break, but fans didn't like Megan Donner because she was by the book, had a professional relationship with her colleagues, and didn't have a close friendship/relationship with Horatio because fans expected their dynamic to be like Catherine and Grissom's in CSI.
Then Holly Gribbs from CSI was killed off because fans didn't like her and she was just a rookie, I think? She didn't get a chance to even grow as a character because fans were like 'nope' and CBS was all 'Okay, Holly Gribbs has gotta go... permanently'.
With Elle Greenaway (Criminal Minds), I liked her well enough- but I started watching the show when Paget Brewster was part of the main cast so the earlier episodes were a bit weird for me when she wasn't there... and I am an Emily Prentiss girly. However, now that I am rewatching the series, I find that I love Elle Greenaway more. She was a very dynamic, very human character- and I don't understand why she was removed from the show.
I mean, she was well liked, I think? Though, I did hear that Lola made the decision to leave the show. That said, I feel that Elle Greenaway was done dirty. I do like the idea they were playing with, though. The idea of a character who has seen so much death and tragedy- who experienced violence and trauma at the hands of a monster just being so traumatized that she had to make a decision to walk away. However, she definitely deserved a few more episodes to play out this idea. At least that's my opinion.
Tumblr media
She deserved BETTER and no it’s not open for discussion!

➸ serendipity | matthew gray gubler
Tumblr media
➸ fem!reader with implied age gap
➸ summary: reader goes to a convention with her friend and runs into matthew, not having a single clue as to who he is.
➸ word count: 4017
A month ago your best friend invited you to go to a convention and of course you accepted the invite because the two of you did pretty much everything together.
Well, except work at the same place which thankfully was the correct decision in the end because that made it possible for both you and she to get off on the same day to go today.
You’ve never been to one before or had the slightest thought pass your mind to try and go to one. Even though you lived in a central area. Some were usually held only an hour away from your home.
And just overall, you honestly didn't have any interest in them. But being the best friend of a person who liked them, you had the responsibility of going to places she enjoyed.
Lucky for her, you finally gave into the compromise and sacrificed one of your paid days off to go to this event.
She drove the two of you there since you offered to pay for lunch and a fourth of her gas expenses, which was something the other usually did on outings to help each other out.
Flipping down the sun visor of the car, you took off the lipstick cap and applied some more onto your lips before the two of you got out. It was the one you favorited and had to refill the most, which was okay since it accented your lips beautifully.
Afterwards, you placed the stick back inside your pocket and double checked your cards in the built-in wallet of your phone case while nodding to yourself.
“Looks like I got everything. You said the tickets were emailed to you online?” You asked.
Trying to sound nonchalant and playing off how much you were double checking over everything in your mind while opening the car door and slipping out.
She chuckled and nodded while getting out of the car at the same time. Just before your friend did that, she grabbed her phone and when she got out, she brought up her photo gallery to double check if the screenshots were visible to scan.
Doing that earlier in the week, your friend made sure to come prepared because who knew what kind of wifi was inside, right?
“We’re good to go. Do I look alright?” Your friend asked once the two of you met at the front of the car.
Your friend was wearing an outfit similar to yours, except hers were more on the gothic emo side. Her makeup consisted of thick wings and false lashes while yours was more subtle.
With a band shirt hanging off her shoulders, she matched it with ripped jeans that were possibly the darkest shade ever and black combat boots that clunked under her every step.
“Of course you do. You always do.” You smirked, hyping her up then jokingly asked while twirling around in a small circle. “How about me?”
When the two of you were doing hair earlier, she opted to do her hair with a straightener while you used her curling iron. Your shirt consisted of a plain low cut maroon shirt and a necklace that you fastened at just the right amount to show off the pendant.
With the same type of ripped jeans on as her, the only difference was the medium-dark wash shade and the belt that you were wearing, having it secured around the loops.
“You look perfect as usual.” She chuckled and you smiled, not that she could see it with her face still down and looking at her phone. After scanning her screen once more, your friend slid her phone into her back pocket before speaking again.
“So here on the extra tickets, I have a group photo in about an hour with the Criminal Minds cast and then an hour and a half later are two thirty-minute increments of single photos with Paget Brewster, Matthew Gray Gubler, and Shemar Moore. I had him put as the last photo since he’s in that new show S.W.A.T. and I don’t know if the wait time would be a little different or not.”
Unfortunately, you had forgotten once again what it was about and wondered what was so great about the show while you finished the walk towards the entrance.
“I feel I’ve asked this multiple times already but I don’t remember. So… what’s Criminal Minds?” She gasped at your question and put a hand over her chest where her heart is, as if she was wounded and clicked her tongue in a disapproving manner.
“My sweet Y/N, it’s a good thing we’re already friends.” She grinned a little deviously and bumped her shoulder with yours right before you moved up in the line towards the security guy.
It wasn’t surprising when he had you dump your phones in the basket and slid it around at the same time you went through a metal detector. After that, he gestured with his arm for the two of you to walk forward to another guy that scanned the tickets on your friend’s phone.
“So like I was saying, it’s a show about a team of profilers from Quantico, Virgina that work for the FBI’s Behavior Analysis Unit. In simpler terms used… the BAU and they usually go around the country to help other precincts with cases that involve dangerous people. Now, each episode is a case so we know who the killer is by the end of the episode but people usually watched weekly or binged because of the cast. That’s who I’m here for obviously but they are a group of such attractive people, that it’s a crime!”
She exclaimed with her arms up in disbelief which had you laughing slightly while the two of you were off to the side and securing the wristbands for the event. Your friend had an extra necklace for the photo ops and put it around her neck while with the next words to fall past your lips had you grinning like a maniac.
“Seems like they’re the real criminals of the show, hmm?” Your friend rolled her eyes, the lame opinion brushing off easily before she pulled on your arm. “Shut up and let’s go check out some of these tables ahead!”
What seemed like forever, was finally the end when your friend checked her apple watch and realized it was time for her to go take a picture with the group. She had asked two separate workers since nobody ever knew the correct answer and it was confirmed that you could stand in line with her but not go past the curtains.
Which was okay with you anyways since you didn’t know who the cast was.
It was mostly small talk for the next fifteen minutes. You could tell it was because of her nerves. She bounced on the soles of her feet and checked the time every five seconds until you had to push her arm down and start a conversation to shake her out of whatever panic attack she was having.
“I-I can’t believe I’m actually meeting the cast of my favorite show.” She mumbled and wiped the invisible tears out of her eyes, which had you trying to cover your laugh by faking a cough before she noticed.
And when your friend walked out of the back area two minutes after, she was ecstatic and shoved the picture towards your face with the widest grin she’s probably made before.
“They were all soooo nice! Paget and Shemar smelled amazing and Joe shook my hand. Kirsten gave me the sweetest hug, like the one her character gives to everyone in the show and I thought I was going to faint in her arms. A.J. insisted that I stood next to her in the photo and Matthew was so polite!” She rambled with teary eyes while you took control of the direction.
Looking for a concession stand to buy drinks, your friend hadn’t paid any attention or didn’t mind wherever it was that the two of you were going that she followed you anyways while in her own little world.
“And you haven’t even heard the best part yet! Adam… who let me tell you — his character is my favorite and we were robbed of seeing him more...” She trailed off with a pause when the two of you reached the front and the person taking your order raised their brow, as if to say “Is she okay?” and you shrugged.
You ordered two sodas while holding in a chuckle and put your card into the chip reader. Opting to pass on entering your pin, you made a ‘mhm’ sound as if to gesture to her to keep going with the conversation and she smiled.
“I don’t know if it was just me but I felt one of those instant magnetic connections in the air when Adam looked at me for the first time. He looked shocked for a second before he tried to mask it with a smile but I think he knew that I saw because he was all awkward at first before he stood on the opposite side of A.J.”
You almost choked on your soda at the confession she told you and gasped. “No way!”
She smiled and drank some more of the soda before placing it on the table where the two of you stood, not letting it disappear from the corner of her eye. “I definitely don’t think I was seeing things because he blushed when I put my arms around him and A.J. and of course I asked first obviously.”
You nodded and after talking some more about the day so far, she sighed again. Realizing she had to go stand in another line, despite that it was one of her favorite actresses.
“Well I gotta go stand for Paget’s photo now, do you want to come again?” She asked. Not knowing if it was boring you or not, she didn’t want to assume anything and figured she’d asked.
You shook your head and responded. “Nah, I’m going to find a bathroom and probably walk around some more. I have some extra money this week so I may buy a little something but I’m not sure yet.” Your friend figured that’d be a good idea and picked up her drink before replying.
“Alright. That sounds good, I’ll probably head to the bathroom after this. Should we meet back in about an hour over by the Matthew Gray Gubler line?”
You glanced around for a moment, spotting the signs and found which area you were looking for. “Yeah that sounds like a good idea.” You took another sip of the soda and she did the same with hers before bidding you farewell for a few.
“Call me if you have any problems.” You told her the same and then looked around once again before following the directions to the restrooms.
You opened another door that led to a hallway. It was a big building so while the convention was held in a giant room, it was still designed to have the bathrooms in another area of the place that was secluded and quiet.
Which was refreshing, since the chatter was all you could hear in the big convention area. After finishing up, you dried your hands with a paper towel and touched up your lipstick again before exiting the women’s restroom.
Since it was a peaceful little area, you leaned against the wall and took out your phone to answer a few texts. Two of them were from your other closest friends and then you replied to one from a group text with your parents.
“Hey, I guess we had the same idea?” A male voice echoed into the hallway, startling the absolute crap out of you that he could see as well with just how shocked you were when you glanced up.
His honey colored eyes widened and he instantly felt bad. “O-oh my gosh I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to freak you out.” He mumbled and glanced down. A few curls fell in front of his face and you took the time to take in his features while reassuring him.
“Oh no, no it’s fine. That’s my fault for not taking note of the surroundings…” Admitting while putting your phone back into your pocket. He looked back up and smoothed a few curls back with a grin that sent butterflies to your stomach.
“Oh, I’m Matthew by the way.” He introduced himself and you gave him a smile in return before answering. “I’m Y/N.”
Matthew couldn’t stop smiling at you when he realized how beautiful you were. He noticed the age difference but with the way you were looking at him, he could tell you didn’t really care about it.
It was pure luck that he told the security he had to use the restroom and that he’d be back in a few minutes. Matthew definitely wasn’t expecting to see you there, looking down at your phone and slightly gnawing down on your lip with a laid back appearance.
Most of the people at the convention today were all bubbly and hyper to meet any and every celebrity they could get an op with that was already pre ordered or not completely sold out yet.
So although it confused him to see you standing there by yourself without a care, it was also like a breath of fresh air and he wanted to know more about you before he had to go back. Matthew tipped his head to see if it was okay to lean against the wall closer to you.
After you nodded, he smiled and whispered as if he’d get in trouble for asking and you chuckled when he said. “Who are you here to see?”
You shrugged and looked down at the floor. He was taller than you by a lot but it wasn’t intimidating at all like you figured it would be. Nor was there any awkward tension or uncomfortable feelings about him.
Overall, this guy had the sweetest aura around him so you didn’t have your walls up as high as you would have usually guarded them.
“Actually I know it’s surprising but no one. I’m just here for my friend. She’s standing in line for a photo op for somebody now and I had to use the restroom. Then I realized how quiet it was out here so I figured it’d be a good time for a breather away from all of the people out there.” You admitted.
“Not surprising at all and ah I see, I’m doing the same right now. Well obviously…” He paused and laughed. The most attractive laugh you ever heard. “But yeah, it’s definitely crowded out there.” He agreed.
Sometimes being a celebrity was too much and he was grateful that you didn’t seem to be another one of those crazy fans, especially since it was a convention that Criminal Minds was mostly covering being as they were the show with the most publicity there this weekend.
“Are you here to see anyone?” You asked. Figuring it was alright to ask since he had asked you first.
It was your answer that had Matthew confirming his guess that you had not a clue as to who he was. He shook his head and you smiled. “Well, Matthew, I guess I have found my match for these types of things.” You pushed off the wall with your arm and stood up.
Brushing off your shirt, you grinned. “We should stick together and maybe go to another one together, if that sounds good with you?” You slyly asked, trying to hint that you’d want to see him again.
Matthew was ecstatic to say the least and eagerly nodded. “Maybe not another one of these but I’d love to take you out on a date, Y/N.” He confessed and rubbed the back of his neck nervously while awaiting your response.
You chuckled. “That’s fair. I’ve come to the conclusion I’m not really one for these anyways.” To get the point across, you waved a hand towards the direction of the convention.
“But yes, that sounds amazing. I’d love to.”
He took out his phone while you rehearsed your number back to him and then he sent a text so you had his as well. “So where are you going now?” He asked out of curiosity and the irony of your reply had him laughing.
After checking your phone for the time, you answered him. “I’m supposed to be by the entrance for Matthew Gray Gubler in about five minutes.”
“Alright, I’m actually heading over in that direction. My friends are here today too, can I walk with you?” He asked with a shy smile, hoping that you would be comfortable doing so and you nodded eagerly.
“Now, if we could somehow walk around all of those people.” You chuckled but he smirked. Already being introduced to one today, there was a secret passageway through a collection of hallways for actors and actresses to avoid the crowds.
“Actually I can help with that.” He smiled and pointed in the direction where he originally came from. “Awesome.” You grinned cheerfully, excited to walk in a more quiet area. Also not wanting to get out of the small bubble you had formed with Matthew.
“So, is your friend a fan of the Criminal Minds show?” He said in a casual tone while the two of you walked and your eyes widened. “Oh absolutely. She had a group op with the cast earlier and then talked about it for over an hour straight.”
He laughed at that and opened one of the doors, allowing you to walk in front of him. “So Matthew, are you getting a picture with the other Matthew today?”
You chuckled and he shook his head with a smirk. “I’m getting a picture taken with one of my friend’s later. It's supposed to be a pair of cast members for the few that had characters who were great friends with somebody else on the show. So I guess it’s like a 2-in-1 but a little cheaper as opposed to a single cast member photo op.” He rambled nervously with a vague response.
For him it was, but for you it just seemed like any other fan getting pictures with celebrities he admired.
“That’s cool!” You replied at the same time he opened another door, this one unfortunately gracing you both with loud noises from the convention. It was conveniently next to some of the photo ops but it still didn’t have the greatest lighting, shielding you from people that didn’t look too closely.
You spotted your friend and turned to tell Matthew but noticed how he was looking off to the side, as if he was in thought.
“I saw my friend over there. Is it okay if I go see her now or would you like me to wait until you see your friends?” You asked with a smile, feeling bad to abandon him when the two of you approached one of the curtains.
He shook his head and tipped his head in her direction where you had told him about her only a few seconds ago. “I’ll be okay, shouldn’t be waiting too long anyways.” He supplied and tried to hide a smile.
You were unknowingly standing only a few feet away from his friends while they stood on the other side of the curtain wall.
“Alright, so I’ll see you again soon?” You suggested, hoping it didn’t sound too desperate. Matthew could tell you were nervous so he put an arm around you and pulled you in for a hug.
It felt so nice to hold you in his arms and he didn’t want to let go. Meanwhile, you could feel his warm breath fanning on your neck which caused your breath to hitch.
But all you could focus on was how fast your heart was beating and the butterflies that had snuck up on you again.
When Matthew reluctantly pulled away, he looked into your eyes with a look that promised it would be sooner than later.
“Absolutely, in fact would it be too soon to ask if I could text you later when I leave here?” He asked and you let a relieved sigh fall through you in content.
“Yes, that’s great actually. Since my friend is driving, I'll be able to reply whenever.” You spoke in agreement with him and Matthew gave you a small but sad smile, knowing his break was unfortunately up.
You could tell how he tensed in disappointment and sadly, you stepped back from him before turning and walking off. When you glanced back he smiled and waved which you returned.
A second later though when you turned to the left where your friend was standing out of the corner of your eye, you realized… he was gone.
“Hey girl! Just in time to wait with me.” Your friend slightly yelled to announce where she was with a wave of her hand to you as if you couldn’t see her and you waved back to let her know you did.
When you made it to her side, asking while adding in. “What were you doing while I was in line? I didn’t see you around when I went to the bathroom. By the way, Paget is amazing!”
You looked around while answering, watching all of the commotion around the both of you. “Well I had to use the restroom and then I ran into this guy.”
She interrupted with an excited sequel and looked at you with excitement. “Was he sweet? Was he hot?” You bit back a smile and blushed.
“Yes he w—” You immediately paused and gulped when you spotted the sign that read ‘Matthew Gray Gubler’.
Underneath his name was a picture of his face and you were frozen in your spot, not even attempting to move up with the line when they moved.
“He was what?” Your friend asked, oblivious to how you were having a moment of shock.
“H-he was… He was Matthew Gray Gubler!” You gasped, almost too quiet for her to hear and immediately matched her widened eyes in astonishment.
She quickly masked her confusion and surprise and put a hand over her mouth before either of you alerted the people around.
“No freaking way!” She mumbled over her hand and you nodded. “Yes way and he gave me his number!”
Your friend put her hand around your arm and pulled you closer while you walked, almost nearing the front. “I can’t believe you met him and got his number for free and I’m paying money for two seconds of his time.”
She laughed and you shrugged. “Well, he was incredibly kind and super sweet so I’m glad this is what you’re using it on.”
Her eyes glazed over in happiness when she realized how close she was to meeting him and whispered. “You’re totally giving me the details later.”
“And you will get them, just as soon as I get an explanation from Matthew later when he texts.” You replied slowly and quietly while your friend showed the security her ticket while you slowly stepped to the side.
Taking out your phone and checking for his name under your contacts, you pinched your arm to make sure it was real.
And it was real later in the car too when you pinched it again after receiving a text.
Matthew: Well I hope the surprise wasn’t too much that you don’t want to speak to me again. I understand if not and I’m incredibly sorry I didn’t tell you… it was amazing talking to you for a few minutes like I was me. A normal person.
You: I understand. And don’t worry I did too. You are a normal person, it's just the job profession that requires a little more attention than usual. ;)
Matthew: Thank goodness! I’m relieved. So about that date… How about tomorrow? Or is that too soon? ;)

Brewster went on to criticize the network for trying to paint the decision as either financial or creative in nature. Instead, she posited that her firing was rooted in a culture of sexism: "I was so soured by the experience of being fired for no reason. Because it wasn't budget cuts. The person they had hired to replace us got paid twice what we got paid! It's a network that's not particularly kind to women. That's why a lot of women leave those procedurals. Or are fired. It's tough."
The decision was difficult for Brewster, who said, "I was heartbroken. I was so happy there. I loved everyone there, and it was easily one of the most hurtful things that's ever happened, to be fired because they wanted 'new women.'"
Apparently, she wasn't the only person devastated by the decision. She revealed, "Our showrunner quit after that, he was so pissed off. He felt that he couldn't run his show after we were let go."

I wanted to wait until I see more (maybe until I finish s6), but, frankly, it makes me quite mad. So they fired AJ Cook at the very beginning of s6 without letting her finish JJ's arc (it was SO sudden), then Paget was let go and, apparently, Emily's arc is just as wild, "gone rogue". No matter what CBS' reason was, that was such a shitty thing to do. I would've understood Seaver for ONE episode, 6x10. But when in 6x11 I realized she kind of looks like JJ and supposed to be a regular, with continuation of sacking Emily/Paget, it infuriated me. New women??? They should've kept both JJ and Emily, it was working just FINE. Adding Seaver in the middle of s6 doesn't make any sense: not financially for the show, not for the plot, not for the fans (when you have an established team that people already love, what is the point of sacking them and adding an unknown member that people have to get used to and that still will be let go at the end of the same season?).
What the hell was happening in s6? Aaron is absent at times (he is the heart of the show for me), Morgan is pushed forward and makes decisions on his own (???? but then is threatened to get sacked), we barely see Reid (and when we do, he isn't exactly working on the case or helping the team like it was before, not to mention that he is NEVER out in the field and with a gun in his hands). But then we see Penelope twice as much (and I can't say I enjoy it, she took on JJ's work that doesn't suit her, and they push Morcia so hard that it makes me go ???? Either make them canon or calm the fuck down and stop forcing them on the audience). The only thing I can't complain is the increased amount of Aaron and David's interactions that truly show how deep their bond is.
I can't say for the rest of the episodes, but with future firing of Moore and Gibson (Aaron is the core of the show, what the HELL), it makes me want to say that it's a hot fucking mess. At least there is such a visible shift in the middle of s6 that kind of discourages me from watching further or enjoying it as much as I did before that shift. I miss JJ & I dislike Seaver. I hope to finish the show but, even watching blindly, I see 'behind the scenes' things that slow me down.
P.S.: And the way Seaver throws herself at Spencer? Piss off. It was obvious from the beginning, but I hate it nonetheless.

Paget Brewster in Criminal Minds “Minimal Loss” 4.03  Promo Photo
Criminal Minds' Paget Brewster Gets a Devil of a Storyline  (Article Below)
This week on CBS' Criminal Minds (Wednesdays at 9 pm/ET) Paget Brewster steps front and center when a rogue priest conjures up demons from Prentiss' past. Brewster gave us a preview of the episode, as well as mooned over upcoming guest star Alex O'Loughlin.
Matt Mitovich - March 10, 2009, 6:55 p.m. PT
This week on CBS' Criminal Minds (Wednesdays at 9 pm/ET), Paget Brewster steps front and center when a rogue priest conjures up demons from Prentiss' past. Brewster gave us a preview of the episode, as well as mooned over upcoming guest star Alex O'Loughlin.
TVGuide.com: I hear we're getting a healthy helping of Prentiss this week.
Paget Brewster: Oh my god, it was exhausting! [Laughs] When you're on an ensemble show and you're messing around with everybody every day and you're not in every scene, and then all of a sudden you're in every scene, it's rough. I would not want to be Hugh Laurie.
TVGuide.com: The episode is titled "Demonology" and it says, "Prentiss has a personal connection to one of the victims in a series of deaths with religious overtones." Man, you can almost hear the thunderclap in the background.
Brewster: Basically we discover that a priest is performing exorcisms outside of the church guidelines. Bruce Davison plays a Catholic priest we go to for advice, and he tells us, "Hey, the church knows it's done, but there are certain guidelines you have to follow," and this "renegade" isn't doing that. The question becomes, "Is this guy actually chasing a demon or is this guy a serial killer?" If we get this guy, are we stopping someone from doing a good thing?
TVGuide.com: Bruce Davison is always a fun guest star.
Brewster: That guy is so much fun. One day he asked me, "Are you Brewster as in William Brewster from the Mayflower?' I said, "Yeah, how would you know that?" It turns out that my [ancestor] nursed his through influenza, at Plymouth! He gave me the book Mayflower, so I'm sending him The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell.
TVGuide.com: Might "Demonology" change the way we look at Prentiss?
Brewster: Possibly. She has a past and it's a little controversial, as to how she knows this victim, a friend of hers from when she was a teenager in Rome. She asks Hotch, "Can I look into this?" And then she uses her position as a federal agent questionably in seeking out the truth. And there is something that happened to her as a kid that..... Well, it's risky what they wrote. We'll see how people respond.
TVGuide.com: Speaking of Prentiss' past, will we ever learn more about her mother, the ambassador?
Brewster: What's kind of exciting is that at any time, the writers can create more history. But there's nothing else this season involving my mom, who is, of course, Kate Jackson.
TVGuide.com: There was an episode last season where Prentiss offered to become the guardian to a young victim. Do you think we'll revisit her desire to have children?
Brewster: I do, yeah. A lot of the female agents who we have spoken to, they work all the time, and they have a hard time just dating. It's an interesting conundrum. Do they choose this life where they're constantly working and dealing with the darkest side of humanity? All we've ever heard about Prentiss' dating life is, "It's grim out there." [Laughs] But that's what we hear from the female agents we talk to.
TVGuide.com: Of course, a band of fans want her to hook up with Hotch.
Brewster: I know! I didn't realize that fans make these videos on YouTube? A.J. Cook sent me a hilarious one that made it look like Prentiss and J.J. were having a secret lesbian affair. You know, when Hotch was blown up in the SUV, we shot this scene where he's in the hospital and I'm standing next to him, looking at his bleeding ear. Our director came in and said, "Paget, you're looking at Hotch like you're in love with him. It looks really weird." So now, every day, Thomas [Gibson] and I flutter our eyelids at each other.
TVGuide.com: Tell me about some of the guest stars still to come this season.
Brewster: Well, in this episode, I got the best of the best. In addition to Bruce, James Remar (Sex in the City) plays the father of the victim, and Walton Goggins (The Shield) is playing my childhood friend....
TVGuide.com: Have you shot the episode with Alex O'Loughlin (Moonlight) yet?
Brewster: Oh, Alex.... Alex sets all the girls into a twitter. Various departments were vying for Alex's attention. We just finished that this past Saturday morning, at 5:30 am.
TVGuide.com: Did Prentiss get a "moment" with Alex?
Brewster: No, No.... Prentiss had no moments with Alex! [Laughs] He's a cutie-pie! There's a little kid, Jake Cherry (Desperate Housewives), in that episode, and he's amazing too. All our guest stars are extraordinary, which we need to remember. We're there every day, and we have long-standing jokes with the crew, so we need to remember there is someone standing next to us, acting [as if] they're about to die or their child has been murdered. They're working up all this emotion, and we're hiding fart machines from each other. We're the most childish set, and we love it!
TVGuide.com: Are there plans for another explosive season finale?
Brewster: I haven't heard anything yet. We're doing 26 episodes, and most shows do 22, so we should have finished two episodes ago. It's a grind.
TVGuide.com: You need to stop being so damn good!
Brewster: [Laughs] We're just trying to make it to the finish line. I'm sure [the finale] will be shocking, but I don't know if they can blow us up again. They only did that last year so none of could ask for a raise!

Season 15 is what I will point to that’s particularly baffling in how the show styled Prentiss. We already have to contend with the ugly Cleopatra wig.
And then the show started styling her out of character ways. Episode 7 is the most egregious wit this because look:
Tumblr media
The dress, the heels? Even when Emily wore dresses this isn’t her style! We’ve seen Emily wear skirts and dresses. Also what is this big bag all of a sudden?
Again, this is why I prefer the styling for Evolution Emily Prentiss. Last seasons Emily Prentiss in the OG show was so baffling.
Tumblr media
And then they had her wear this blouse with THAT wig. And I’m starting to wonder if Paget Brewster lost a bet.
Why were Pagets’ characters — Frankie Dart (Community) and Sara Kingsley (Grandfathered) — styled better than on Criminal Minds??
Tumblr media
I can see Emily wearing this!
Tumblr media
And this!!
What is going on in the costume department in the last seasons????
Tumblr media
See that whole outfit? The fabulous red coat? I’m glad Emily started dressing like Emily Prentiss again in the last season.
Tumblr media
I will take Evolution over that last seasons of the OG show, any day.
—-
Also, episode 7 of season 15 did the opposite of selling me on Andrew Mendoza as a romantic partner for Emily. I thought that at least, if he made her happy I’d be down with that.
But everything from that episode and episode before that just showed me Emily was settling. And, also because so many of her friends told her she had to stop running and putting up walls— but she’s not doing all those things because she had cold feet, she did that because she wasn’t feeling it.
Andrew Mendoza is a great guy but also he’s persistent. But once his constant presence disappeared from her life… Emily started realizing Andrew wasn’t for her, and with the lockdown, I bet that just made it all too apparent.
(Also, it felt like casting just got a handsome man but didn’t bother with a chemistry test. Paget had more chemistry with her lawyer friend in season 12! Actually, felt like there was some low key attraction there between Alvez and Prentiss but that was pushed away when she became the boss.)
Paget Brewster can also bring it when she has chemistry, just look at Grandfathered. Brewster and Stamos were so good there that I was so sad when they canceled Grandfathered!

Everything I learned or experienced from watching the commentary track for “Community”:
*deep breath*
The Pierce writing the Greendale song subplot had a darker version cut by NBC.
Pierce helping Troy with sneezing had a cut Chevy line: “you used to be the big man on campus AND NOW YOU’RE A JOKE.”
Chevy Chase seems to not know what ecstasy is.
Dan Harmon definitely is familiar with it.
There was a shooting at the school they filmed the debate scenes at which put the cast and crew into lockdown.
Joel McHale received emails from church groups regarding the content of his “Man is Evil” debate.
Donald Glover hits on Yvette Nicole Brown in a Barack Obama impression.
Chevy Chase loves being behind a piano.
He also loves doing prat falls.
He improvised calling his beastmaster owl “Abed” in Introduction to Statistics.
Jack Black filmed his episode in one day.
Annie having sex with a guy, him revealing himself to be gay, and her never seeing his genitalia was drawn from Alison Brie’s life.
According to Dan Harmon, Slater is supposed to be the Jolie to Britta’s Aniston.
Dan Harmon was worried people would think he was ripping of Funny or Die with Jeff and Slater’s relationship declaration form.
The cast of Derrick Comedy is Pierce’s joke team in Romantic Expressionism.
Yvette Nicole Brown came up with the Burt and Ernie tag.
Craig Cackowski is on the show because his sister wrote for the show.
JUST MY OPINION, but Chevy Chase and Dan Harmon seemed quite appreciative of each other in the first season.
The “Goldbluming” joke was a big point of contention between Joe and Anthony Russo.
I can’t confirm... but it really sounds like the show killed a frog for Britta’s prank.
The Starburns - Abed chicken scene was an intentional homage to Heat.
Abed and Jeff are both cut off from people according to Dan Harmon. The difference is that Jeff can manipulate people and Abed covets that ability.
Jeff and Britta had sex in Modern Warfare partially to make the episode important to the overall story’s structure (in addition to it being the first real high concept episode).
Abed wears a Boondocks shirt because Sony owned it and it was free to use by the show.
Dan Harmon does not respect Good Will Hunting as a movie.
The “so it begins, the greatest relationship ever known” kiss took 30 takes.
Betty White did not know Toto’s Africa before filming her rap.
The music budget for the second season was entirely spent on Abba music for Epidemiology. Dan Harmon paid out of pocket for the Sara Bareillis song they use in Paradigms of Human Memory.
In Calligraphy, Gwynnifer is named after Dan Harmon’s twitter “nemesis”. He confirmed it is a code name for Britta, who had been hooking up with Jeff since the space bus.
Dan Harmon repeatedly refers to Jeff and Britta as the inverse of Jim and Pam from The Office.
Bruce Hornsby was supposed to punch Pierce in the season one finale.
Chevy Chase was upset with how cruel Pierce was in Advanced Dungeons in Dragons.
Levar Burton changed the line from “more fish for Levar” to “more fish for Kunta”.
The joke of the tag where no one says anything to each other while they surf their phones is supposed to be that it took place on Britta’s birthday, but the writers realized that it was the wrong time of year.
Dan Harmon paid for that Sara Bareillis song because it was set over the first Jeff x Annie shipper video he had seen.
The dean’s cartoon tag exists because Paradigms of Human Memory is somehow the only episode that came in UNDER expected time.
At the end of Competitive Wine Tasting, Abed was supposed to hear a gunshot coming from Stephen Tobolowsky’s office after proving Angela was, in fact, the boss on Who’s the Boss?
Yvette Nicole Brown calls Gillian Jacobs “Stinkerton” for some reason.
No one on the commentary was happy with the Jeff calling Annie “kiddo” scene in Geography of Global Conflict. Actors, directors, nobody.
Chevy Chase told Maggie Bandur that she shouldn’t write comedy.
Dan Harmon tweeted as all the characters for #AnniesMove.
Dan Harmon realized the sound was off to Abed and Troy’s Christmas Rap while doing the commentary.
Dan Harmon said a lot of the planning in season three was about minimizing Chevy’s contact with the cast and crew.
Gillian Jacobs said she didn’t move much in Virtual Systems Analysis when Abed wasn’t supposed to be inhabiting her. (My opinion: none of the other characters seem to follow her rule.)
Alison Brie raps on set a lot.
Gillian Jacobs was in an Apple PC commercial that never aired.
Dino Stamatopoulos repeatedly requested to be killed off the show.
Jim Rash’s stand-in was bronzed to fill in for Danny Pudi who was absent while his wife was having twins.
Jim Rash was in and out for a bit while winning an Oscar for The Descendants.
Dean Laybourne was self-conscious about his appearance to justify John Goodman’s appearance for another movie.
Moses Port said the opening of season four was supposed to be a fake out to make people think the show suddenly sucked.
Annie’s The Ring entrance was filmed backwards then run in reverse.
Britta’s ham costume had to be recolored to prevent her from looking like a scrotum.
Intro to Knots was originally supposed to be filmed in one shot as an homage to Rope. The first two minutes was all they managed to get through.
Gillian Jacobs says Troy and Britta have nothing in common.
According to Dan Harmon, Chevy Chase was happy to do his scene in season five and was open to coming back for more.
According to Dan Harmon, even if he wanted Chevy Chase back, Sony would have refused his return to the show.
Jonathan Banks told Christopher McKenna that he would “punch him in the heart” which Dan Harmon wrote into the show.
It is all butt confirmed that Annie is the Ass Crack Bandit.
Advanced Advanced Dungeons and Dragons was so behind schedule that it totally rushed/altered the season five finale.
Dan Harmon says Jeff shares things with Britta that he doesn’t with Annie but feels things for Annie that he doesn’t with Britta.
Dan Harmon and Paget Brewster were good friends before she joined the show.
Frankie’s backstory is that she is moving to Colorado to take care of her handicapped sister.
Chang is actually gay.

the paradox of emily prentiss’ audience perception and character design
some of y’all about to be real mad at me, but it must be said:
emily prentiss’ character design makes no sense: my personal opinion + an objective analysis
i think it can be challenging to separate the versions of characters we have in our little brains from actual canon content, but doing so is important for understanding what those characters are truly like, especially within the context of their environment and in contrast to others around them. plus developing a deeper understanding of the media we consume is super fun and interesting! with that being said: emily prentiss should not work for the fbi and here’s why (in three parts regarding who’s responsible: cbs, paget, and fans) (sit down and grab a snack i promise this is over 3k words)
quick disclaimer: i don’t dislike emily at all! that’s my girl, i just looked closer and realized some funky things the writers did and felt the need to analyze her of course: so let’s get into it
part one: what cbs did
cbs set the stage for emily’s introduction on the heels of the departure of lola glaudini as elle greenaway! lola has clarified that she decided to leave the show because filming in los angeles was not the best environment for her personally, and after one successful season on a major network (but not much established long term plot or drama beyond elle’s departure as a character) a consistent ensemble cast was required- particularly because the bau had been criticized for being predominantly male in the first few episodes of the show and not much development was given to penelope or jj yet. enter emily prentiss.
for the duration of seasons 2-3ish, emily was framed as a chip off the block that was elle greenaway, just slightly…richer? in her first few episodes emily was hesitantly polite but ambitious, clean cut, intellectually concise and held her own within the team. she seemed equal parts intimidated and frustrated by her male superiors (gideon, hotch) but certainly proves herself among other profilers. her childhood was explored only within reference to her strained relationship with her mother (which was only ever referenced once more after the fact) and we received a short overview of her educational and career history in her first few episodes. emily fit right into the hole elle had left, and didn’t have many major storylines yet.
seasons 4-6 brought a bit more development and depth to emily’s character! she begins dropping more snarky remarks, one liners, and socially deepening her relationships with the other team members. this seems more within the lines of elle’s design, but emily arguably took more time to grow into her place within the team. during the foyet arc she was vulnerable and supportive, and the doyle arc gave her some independence and agency she didn’t have previously. this era also solidified her appearance and persona as more edgy, which falls in line with general fanon perception of her character (especially when compared to jj or penelope). i can’t address this era or season 7 without mentioning that cbs was actively trying to remove paget from the cast, similar to how they did to aj cook as well. paget has spoken about this instance before, and i believe it slightly affected her portrayal of her character, and “lauren” was somewhat of a goodbye for both paget and emily (thus why she wished for mgg to direct since they were best friends).
season 7: in my opinion, one of the best seasons for emily. she was wisened and deeply wounded by her experiences with doyle, which was understandable of course. she returned to the team she loved and learned to appreciate life in a different way, remaining mature during this time period as well! though her departure was a bit less than graceful and sudden at the end of this season, it made sense compared to some other exits the team had seen.
now *sigh* all the rest.
paget as emily appears in two separate guest appearances (once in s9 and once in s11, and she is referenced offscreen as well) before permanently reprising her role as unit chief of the bau. these appearances were most likely to boost ratings and get the team back together (i.e. 200) or just to pepper in international cases (tribute). emily’s personality remains pretty consistent here, just more mature and comfortable in leadership positions (seeing as she is running an entire branch of an international law enforcement organization). then season 12 hit.
upon the departure of thomas gibson as hotch, cbs reached out to paget to see if she would be interested in fulfilling her role as emily within a longer term unit chief position. i’ll get into why this is wack in a few paragraphs, but the remainder of her time on the show is spent on a mature portrayal that seems very distant from her previous versions. emily is more authoritative, gives orders with ease, and has no qualms about leading a team of agents or even receiving promotion offers as director of the entire bureau.
thus concludes a general summary of the canon content cbs gave us as viewers. now let's talk about what they didn’t give us, regrettably
the primary aspect of emily’s design that comes to mind for many is her queer coding. though not much was to be expected from cbs, a prime time cable tv network, each of her relationships on the show (all with men) seemed oddly forced, and without much chemistry as compared to the SOs of other main characters. rumors of scrapped plotlines have floated around about what may have been, but the ultimate lack of acknowledgement of any queer characters in the main ensemble still leaves a feeling of disappointment to audiences, and leaves more to be desired as for how emily navigates social bonds.
part two (sidebar): what paget did
i think it could be agreed within audiences that paget brewster’s portrayal of emily made the role what it was! her dry witty delivery and emotional prowess combined with sitcom acting experience made her performance a mainstay for years. i think she did the best she could with a confusing and at times flat characterization, and brought the role to life.
paget also heavily contributes to fanon indirectly with her comments outside of the show (press, cameos, twitter etc). her general continued interest and fondness for the role post production affects fan perception, particularly in what she chooses to elevate and comment on. she and aj have both spoken about viewing jemily content, and paget and thomas have both also commented on hotchniss. most cast members feel free to comment on their characters in the appropriate timing, and seem open to discussing fanon ships and theories outside of canon!
part three: what fanon did
as we can tell from this fan space as well as the presence on insta, tik tok and twitter, fans LATCHED onto emily super quickly. she’s remained a favorite over the years, and this fan persistence is what brought her back so many times after leaving (so many times). in my opinion, queer coding and a bolder female trope (in contrast to her female counterparts) are the main pulls because they resonated with so many fans- new and old. with that being said, newer fans of the show in the past year in particular have been heavily influential in fanon, solely because of the large influx of fan content and popularity of it.
fan content began to take coding and bite size moments and snippets from the show as canon, and cemented it into much of the content and discourse they created. these small pieces of emily’s character are significant, but have become magnified by how easily they are to share and edit. for example, a collection of catchy one liners from emily over the seasons makes for a great video edit intro, or gifset! there’s absolutely no problem with this content, it just all combines to create a certain fanon perception no character escapes (this isn’t a phenomenon limited to emily or the cm fandom!)
these droves of content also solidified emily’s personality as much more defined, but at the same time, simplified it in a way that’s slightly harder to explain.
fanon: more emo/goth than canon basis
fanon: more introverted/anti social than canon basis
fanon: more violent/chaotic when canon emily is relatively well mannered and doesn’t start many conflicts (particularly in the workspace)
fanon: much less maternal when canon emily displays desire on multiple occasions (even crossing professional borders) for children, particularly teenage girls (possibly projection)
(again, nothing wrong with this interpretation at all and it still varies! This is just a generalization based on most of the popular content i have seen)
part 4: why it doesn’t work
let me start with this: emily prentiss does not like her job.
we don’t receive much in depth information about emily’s internal feelings and thoughts towards her mother beyond resentment. this stems from wanting to make it on her own, as a professional and as an individual (cough cough college deposits). this makes emily’s insistence on proving herself to authority figures in her earlier seasons is interesting to watch in different circumstances. she cites her experience and denies help from her mother when justifying her placement in the bau to hotch, she is extra vigilant about being helpful on her first case with gideon, etc. nevertheless, emily forges her own path outside of diplomacy and becomes a successful profiler and agent, with the help of her privilege, wealth and name whether she likes it or not. but if we read between the lines and fill in the blanks cbs neglected, these ambitions may subconsciously be oriented towards pleasing her mother.
example one: emily’s authority issues go further than just “rebellion” or “anarchy”, she frequently questions the ethics and sustainability of the work that the bau does. every team member does this, but emily much more so than anybody else.
in “amplification”, emily almost breaks federal protocol to inform civilians of anthrax threats. she butts heads with both hotch and rossi on this front, and ends the episode with having a conversation with rossi about the ethics of lying in their line of work. emily resigns to a solemn “it be like that” and moves along, accepting this reality.
on multiple different occasions emily laments to derek about the darkness she sees on the job, and it’s shown that this gets to her quickly on particularly bad cases. this is another contradiction of the design that she can supposedly “compartmentalize” better than others on the team, when she cannot unless the lives of others are at risk (doyle arc, s7 finale).
emily also responds in this way to many cases involving children, a similarity to jj many don’t notice upon first watching the series. “seven seconds” and “children of the dark” come to mind, during the latter in which emily is prepared to cross multiple professional lines to adopt a teenage girl left orphaned by the case, until hotch stops her and establishes that her emotions can’t rule her judgement on the job. regardless of hotch’s thoughts about her attempted caretaking abilities, these actions and impulses deeply contradict the typical bureaucratic pathways of the work the bau does.
the looming reputation of her mother’s diplomatic history hangs over emily, and after going to law school and working for the cia, she most likely did want to forge her own path as far away from being a socialite: being a spy. her inner nature doesn’t always reflect this profession, and leads me to believe that with her knowledge of psychology, law procedure and care for children: emily prentiss might be more inclined to working in social work, placing suffering children and teenagers in homes they deserve.
and finally, the hill i will die on: emily prentiss was an bad unit chief
this wonderful post touches on my general sentiment, but there were many reasons as to why emily prentiss’ career arc makes little to no sense (plot holes included).
first: her background. emily attended chesapeake bay university as well as yale and achieved a ba in criminal justice. keep in mind that though timelines evidently don’t exist in the cm universe, emily prentiss is ONE YEAR older than aaron hotchner (for context). in her first episode, she professes that she has worked for the bureau for a little under ten years in midwestern offices- something the audience laters knows to not be true. emily worked with the cia and interpol as a part of a profiling team and undercover agent up until roughly TWO YEARS before her canon introduction. plot holes and time gaps aside, this makes me wonder, why didn’t she just say the cia was a backstop without revealing the highly confidential nature of her work with doyle (similar to jj’s state department backstop and cover story)? penelope or hotch could have easily accessed her file and seen that she did not in fact have experience with the bureau in midwestern offices recently, and given the fact that erin strauss set up her bau placement, i’m presuming these formalities or references were overlooked.
second: her experience within the team. emily worked as a part of the bau with the bureau for roughly 6 or 7 years. after this, she is invited to run the entire london branch of interpol, one of the most renowned international law enforcement organizations. i’m surely not the most knowledgeable on requirements or standard timelines for such matters, but with the fact that emily had never led a team in her life (not in the bau or interpol previously) and had roughly 10 years of field experience, i don’t believe she would have ever realistically been considered eligible to run the whole london department.
third: her return to the bureau. fanon depiction of their relationship aside, if you believe aaron hotchner’s last wish before going into witsec was to entrust his team to emily prentiss, you’re dead mistaken. bringing emily back was clearly a pull for ratings after the loss of two main characters (hotch and derek), but logistically a bad decision. let’s suppose emily has had 4 or 5 years of experience in london now, this established authority position would be unlikely to change at the drop of a hat, even for old teammates or friends. also considering how close they were after a decade of working closely in bureaucratic and field contexts, i firmly believe hotch would have referred jj for the job of unit chief but that’s another discussion for another time.
emily’s reign as unit chief is odd, because of the many chaotic storylines crammed into it. but amidst bad writing and viewings plummeting, emily’s character is completely flattened. completely. emily is unrecognizable, both in appearance (that god awful wig) and personality. at times she acts as a complete wise authority, giving orders and delegating local authorities as hotch did. but at other times she makes multiple illegal, emotional, and incorrect judgement calls based on personal circumstances that lead to further chaos (deleting the recording of her and reid’s mexico conversation and reprimanding luke in “luke” for the exact same thing she did in season 6 even though she enabled her to do so come to mind).
i’m not sure if this is due to paget trying to find her footing in the role again, or the writer’s bad decisions towards the end of the show wrecking any previous design for their ensemble. then, there’s the infamous “wheels up” scene in s13e1. notoriously cringey, this seems like a vague caricature of something rossi would say many years in the past (the same goes for her pep talk in “red light” in the hunt for diana reid). these moments are meant to mature emily in the audience’s eye, but instead completely removed her from who we understood her to be, and made her an unreliable leader.
part five: and why it does
in theory, emily was a bolder foil to jj, similar to elle who she arguably replaced at first. she came into her own, and stands as a more uniquely developed character than almost any other in the main ensemble. she isn’t as maternal or domestically inspiring as canon jj, less bright and sunny than penelope, not quite as stoic or intimidating as derek or hotch. And yet at the same time, she’s a fairly blank slate. stripping fanon content away entirely, canon emily has few defining traits (all of which are constantly changing), and that may be the key to why we love her so much.
