writing patterns: last lines

I love the first lines meme, but what about last lines? I find them as vital as first lines, if not more. A first line should do a lot of things (indicate POV, tone, voice) while also catching the attention of the reader and inviting them to read on. But it can be invisible, just a way into the story, and that's perfectly fine because the story is what will amaze/impress/entertain the reader.

The last line, however, is the last impression: it can be a powerful punch, or it can be underwhelming. It's the vibe, the feeling, the aftertaste that the reader will carry with her when she closes the tab/book. It doesn't do as much work as the opening, but a really strong (or really weak) last line might colour what has come before.

For this game, instead of recent fics, I decided to check my longer fics; the last line of a longer piece of work sort of carries more weight, in my mind, idk.

Rules: write the last line of your 10 longest fics. What patterns can you see, if any? Which ones are your favourites?

Something I noticed: in my longer fics, I often have a short epilogue at the end of the story. Like a post-credits scene. I'm including both last lines for pattern-seeking. Also, a while ago, I'd done a before-during-after ask thing and posted some sequels at the end of a few fics. I debated using only the original ending here, but the sequel's last line is what will stay with readers, so I added both. Finally, The Boy Who Died has a coda but it's so long I'm treating it as a chapter.

I. 9 ½ Days (drarry, E, ~70k)

(story) Harry burrowed closer to him, eyes fluttering open. ‘You’re real.’ ‘I am.’ Draco tangled their legs together. It was snug under the covers. ‘Touch me and see.’

(epilogue) Harry took his hand and together they stepped forward into the green, living wood.

II. dirtynumbangelboy (drarry, E, 39.4k)

(story) ‘Home,’ Harry says, nuzzling Draco’s hair. ‘Take us home.’

(epilogue) He wants them to look smashing at the betrothal.

III. The Miseducation of Draco Malfoy (drarry, E, ~38k)

(story) Draco decided he would be happy to spend his life making Harry laugh, and thrust in.

(epilogue) “Let’s give them something good to talk about then,” Draco suggested, and Harry smiled, bent him backwards, and gave him a proper kiss, tongue and all.

IV. The Boy Who Died (drarry, E, ~27k)

Overthrowing the regime will take a miracle, Kingsley had said in the dark Edwardian manor. Draco had smiled at that and gazed at Harry. Indeed. Which is why we’ll win.

V. The Gift (drarry, E, ~26k)

Before [Draco] casts Nox, he takes a last look at his packed trunk, and then, in the whispering night, he allows himself to dream.

VI. Hush, darling (drarry, E, 23.6k)

But Draco holds Harry tighter — and doesn’t let go.

VII. The Unquiet Grave (drarry, E, 21.5k)

Draco glanced at Harry and smiled. ‘I’ll be fine. I have a bodyguard.’

VIII. Through the Looking Glass and What Draco Found There (drarry, E, 17.5k)

(original) This world was fucked up. It had pain and grief and sick people and dead people and stupid decisions and bad hair days and fear and regret—although it didn’t have Smith in leather gear, which was something. It also had Harry Potter, who buried his face in the crook of Draco’s neck, and who liked this Draco, the Death Eater Draco, and that made everything worth it.

(sequel) ‘Pull them down yourself,’ Draco said and kissed him.

IX. The Full Monty (drarry, E, 10k)

First, he goes to the kitchen to make sure Arthur is indeed alive — he is, nibbling at some seeds on the counter — but after that, yes, he goes straight to where Potter is waiting, hopefully all soapy and wet.

X. How to Court your Husband (drarry, E, 5,5k)

(original) Their escorts maintained a discreet distance when they arrived and saw what the princes were up to, and twenty minutes later in the palace courtyard, the Fountain spurted a jet of water the likes of which had never been seen before.

(sequel) Harry smiled and stroked Draco’s face. ‘We’re in no hurry, husband.’

Patterns

JFC. I like my epilogues and codas and sequels, don't I? Lord. I don't think I'd noticed it before as clearly as I do now. This isn't even everything: I actually started a coda for The Gift a while back, and I have a half-finished sequel scene for dirtynumb in my folders. I can just never leave off. But it's true: I do love epilogues.

I end with dialogue A LOT more than I start with it. First lines, I estimated a third of them are dialogue, but a good half of the endings are.

A large majority of my endings involve kissing or cuddling or touching in some way. Love language touch anyone?

There's a fair bit of Draco glancing at Harry and smiling.

In the two fics that have a sequel scene, the original ending is, imo, vastly superior to the sequel's. Hm.

Faves

I like the epilogue ending of 9 1/2 Days; the ending of Unquiet Grave, which works better I think in context; the rather poetic ending of The Gift; the original ending of Through the Looking Glass, which, imo, perfectly captures the theme; and the original ending of How To Court Your Husband, which is hilarious in context. Several readers commented on that one.

Potter had clearly never heard about obscuring the truth — an essential life skill according to Draco's father, which wasn't outright lying but had the same effect — and he confessed to their long breaks in Muggle shops, like the idiot he was. &

At breakfast on Friday morning he was downright antsy. His mother noticed. “What’s Bothering you, Draco? You seem on Edge.” He knew better than to say that he’d be indulging in a popular Muggle pastime and so he tried to obscure the truth. “I’ll be late tonight, Mother. Potter and I have… uh, plans.” “What plans?” “I’m not entirely sure. They involve er… walking.” “Walking.” “And talking, I — I assume.” “And talking.” Cold sweat covered him at his mother’s unblinking stare. “Well, it was his suggestion and I couldn’t say no, I mean, it’s only polite, he’s only the bloody hero of the wizarding world.” “The hero of the wizarding world.” “Mother.” Draco put his fork down. “Can you please stop repeating what I say? It’s like having an echo.” “I will, if you stop Obscuring the Truth and tell me what is really Going On. What has Potter got you doing that you wish to hide from Me?”

& His mother’s knowing looks he could live without. Draco now strongly suspected she was a Legilimens of a high calibre, because all it took was for him to step into the drawing room the day after the ball and she'd gasped and put her book down. “Draco! You’ve—” Draco froze, waiting to hear the end of that sentence. Had sex? Boffed Potter? Indulged in some frottage with the Saviour? Fucked a Gryffindor? “You’ve had a Dalliance.” Draco blushed to the tips of his toes, wishing the earth would open and swallow him right there and then.

hey! curious new writer here. which fix of yours were the easiest to write and which were the hardest? in what way?

Hello anon! Thanks for an interesting ask.

OK I'll start with the disclaimer that every fic has its difficulties as well as moments when it flows, but there have definitely been some that poured out of me with great ease than others which were a constant struggle.

The Miseducation of Draco Malfoy, my first drarry, was written at the height of my obsession and it poured out of me. I wrote like a fiend all day and would go to bed at night and reread what I wrote. I breathed that fic day and night for the weeks it took me to write it. It was also the most fun I had writing, prob because I was a complete unknown and there were zero expectations from me. Similarly, The Full Monty, written just after TMODM, was an easy fic to write. I remember I read the prompt and was immediately assaulted by images and started laughing on my own and was like, OK I need to claim this, the fic is writing itself.

Similarly but in a more tortuous way, dirtynumbangelboy poured out of me too. More tortuous because it took me ages to find the right beginning, and by then I was behind with my deadlines and got stressed. Also, I wrote it in a sort of dread of the Erised fest, because it had some amazing writers that year and I was intimidated. I remember my goal was to "at least not embarrass myself" .

But, aside from the doubts and stress, dnab itself flowed like nothing else. There are passages that I really love, even now years later, and they are exactly as they came out the first time. I did very little editing (compared to other works).

With The Boy Who Died I made a fun post on tumblr about a mdzs AU of drarry and then the idea wouldn't let me go so I had to sit and write it. Luckily it was summer and I didn't work and I could spend my days writing it. There were moments I got stumped but it mostly came out easily.

Finally, a lot of my short fics poured out of me in one go and came out almost perfectly formed. The Dare, A Perfectly Normal Reaction, and my MCD The Death You Carry are good examples.

Fics that took ages at first:

so my thing is that I have to find the right opening to begin the story, otherwise I can't proceed. I don't plan; the first scene/chapter is my plan. And sometimes I get stuck for yonks. With The Unquiet Grave I began with a Draco POV, him being a politician and Harry his bodyguard, had an interesting first scene and then---nothing. It's like I hit a wall. Zero words come. When I have this feeling, I know I need to go back and revise. Long story short, it was when I changed the POV to Harry that somehow the whole gothic mood came about and I felt the auspicious click: I got it. That's what the story is. A gothic romance. After that, it was easier.

The same thing happened with Hush, darling. I rewrote a first scene fruitlessly several times until a random bit of inspiration fell into my hands: the visual of a card game. I began with it and I let it guide me and the whole plot/stakes/cast fell into place.

Fics that needed a LOT of work and had to be dragged into existence:

The Gift is the first that comes to mind. First couple of chapters were pretty easy and then I was stumped. Writing it felt like dragging myself up a slope, step by step and also not being happy with anything, so that was fun. :/

The other is 9 ½ Days, which took actual years to finish. In that case the middle part was the hard one. I wrote the beginning fairly easily and the last chapters, the plotty ones, also flowed. But the middle. Zeus almighty. It took me years and I thought and thought and thought about it a lot. Finishing this fic was an immense relief but also a source of pride, especially because I really liked the result, and judging by the comments I get, people seem to love it too.

Thanks for an unusual ask! It was good to ponder about my fics and my writing process. The same issues seem to crop up with my original works too, and it's helpful to remind myself that I got over those issues before and I can get over them again.

These two misfits are inspired by @magpiefngrl‘s fic The Miseducation of Draco Malfoy, in which Draco learns to love all things Muggle including (but not limited to) going to the cinema, coke-a-cola, and the glossy pages of Cosmo. I never knew I needed a fic wherein Draco eagerly pursues the magazine racks of a corner shop in Clapham, but I did. I really, really did. 

The second she mentioned them doing community service and donning orange jumpsuits, I flailed with joy (picture Kermit.) I simply had to draw these boys in Misfits' attire.

Magpie, I hope you don’t mind the liberties I took with Harry. He’s rocking Sirius’ 1460′s, and for some reason, I was struck with the notion that he’d wear a headband, attempting to hide his scar, and failing. He thinks he looks cool. hehe. I have so many headcanons with Harry’s appearance I can get carried away.

Then Harry pressed closer and kissed Draco.

Potter smelled like the woods on an autumn morning. Draco loved the woods.

They kissed gently for a while, but they were both hungry for more. This was a long time coming, Draco realised, as his tongue slipped inside Potter’s mouth, licking and tasting, running along the soft inside of his lips. Very soon the kiss became deeper, insistent, their hands grasping tighter at their clothes. Draco slid a hand under Potter's shirt, smiling at his startled gasp. He run his tongue along Potter’s neck and tasted Potter's skin. Draco had never been happier.

“Draco,” Potter breathed, and Draco shuddered right to his toes. Harry’s voice was soft, almost trembling, a caress and Draco had to cup his face and snog him again, their lips devouring each other.

Draco found himself sitting on Potter's lap, pressing his erection against him. His mind had left the premises, he was all feeling and instinct and skin. He rubbed himself experimentally over Potter’s crotch, and Potter moaned, and oh if this sound didn’t almost kill Draco. Potter threw back his head, breaking their kiss and said, “I think we should continue this at my place.”

They Disapparated immediately to Potter’s living room, where he pushed Draco on the sofa and pressed over him, still kissing, always kissing.

Draco didn’t know where he ended and where Potter began. He trailed his hands over Potter’s strong back, tugging at his shirt, slipping under the waistband of his trousers and Potter pulled away, provoking a whine from Draco.

 Potter looked down at him with dark eyes and said, “you’re killing me,” and before Draco had to wonder whether he meant it as a good thing, Potter took off his shirt and resumed kissing Draco. 

A good thing then.
