Unit 4: Interpretation Through Art

I used to think that it was impossible for someone with my artistic talent, non-existent, to be able to represent and create something as beautiful as the nature around us. Why should it not be the case for those with years of training and practice to showcase their talents of creative expression through visual masterpieces that show nature in all its glory? As the weeks in this course have gone on, and particularly with this most recent week, I have begun to realize that everyone is able to interpret nature through art, and it could even be argued that we have a responsibility to interpret nature in our own way. After reading the textbook chapter, I have begun to realize that interpreting nature through art is less so about the objective beauty of the piece, but about how the individual is able to connect to it.

I have learned that artistic interpretation can be a way to express our emotions and capture the meanings of our surroundings through our own eyes. It lets us capture moments, and highlight our unique perspective of the world around us. I am someone who can experience, process, and appreciate my surroundings. Thus, I can be someone that interprets nature through art. I believe that anyone and everyone can, and should, follow this principle. We all have the duty to truly cherish art, and display our appreciation through whatever medium we want to use.

According to the textbook, the gift of beauty is that interpretation should allow people to feel the ability, desire, and sense of beauty in their surroundings (Beck, Cable & Knudson, 2019). The gift of beauty would provide spiritual uplift and encourage the preservation of resources. As well, Enos Mills has been described to believe that nature guides should be more inspirational, rather than informational (Beck, Cable & Knudson, 2019). This has also led to his proposed formula for becoming a strong nature guide. According to Mills, one must appeal to the imagination, personalize your facts, use stories to give life to inanimate objects, use principles, and give biographies (Beck, Cable & Knudson, 2019). 

When I read these ideas, it helped me understand not only how I can interpret the gift of beauty, but how to ensure that others understand the gift of beauty as well. The gift of beauty lies in truly appreciating the nature around you. Instead of just looking at nature and identifying facts, it would be more beneficial to just enjoy and bask in your surroundings. When interpreting for others, it could be beneficial to use a more holistic and fun-based approach to explaining your surroundings as opposed to just using facts and making it seem like a lecture. This holistic approach should make those we interpret for feel at home and warm in their surroundings, to ensure that they are truly appreciating the nature for the beauty that it holds.

I love you guys. Like, I don’t think you understand just how much. You’re all so strange and weird, yet so so so creative, talented, and fun. You guys make me experience so many different ranges of emotions. I could be having the worst day of my life and then come across a meta, fanart, a fanfic, a character analysis and it all just brightens up my day. Even when it’s something I don’t even agree too, like, or wouldn’t usually get into, I can’t help but stop and admire or listen to you because you guys are just so good at keeping me engaged and entertained [though, this might just be on me because I’m honestly like a child that can find really anything enjoyable]. And I mean, yes, this fandom does have its downsides, but so do all fandoms. That’s just the way it is, nothing’s perfect.

Fanart [and just art in general] really gets me, though. I’m such a massive sucker for pretty things, so when I see artist drawing fanart/art for their favorite ship(s), character(s), or stories, I can’t help but marvel at its glory. It’s just like, you made this? This beautiful masterpiece? You imagined this and brought it to life, just like that? You absolutely brilliant, stellar, talented person. You’re a gift sent from the heavens above, and I had the honor to have your art bestowed upon me. You have once again left me speechless and awestruck.

The very same can be said about writers as well. The way you guys are able to make up various scenarios and situations in your head and write it all out is just so…delicious. The way you’re able to play around with words and make these beautifully poetic and tragic stories is so captivating. And mind you, a lot of these ships and tropes are the same things over and over again, and yet, you guys still find a way to make it somewhat different, to still keep me engaged and entertained, and to keep me wanting more and more. Even got me wanting to become a writer and make my very own fanfics and stories.

You guys all have made a huge impact on people, that you yourself may not even know. And I just wanted to let you know that I love every one of you and that I am grateful and appreciate everything that you’ve done and do. You all hold a special place in my heart forever and ever more. I hope you guys continue to share your gifts with us. I love you, and wish you all nothing but the best, nothing but happiness and good health for you and all of your families.

We’ve made it to 2025, friends!

Another year, another chance to revel in the unparalleled glory of ships, whose tension and unspoken longing fuel our collective chaos. But before we dive headfirst into new fics, fan art, and elaborate theories about whether Elrond ever braided Galadriel’s hair in the First Age (he did, fight me), let’s take a moment to reflect on the whirlwind that was 2024.

Now, let’s not mince words—2024 had its fair share of wargs running amok in the mix. Between the trolls and Nazgûls from That Certain Fandom™️(iykyk) swooping in uninvited like Gollum at a fish market, there were moments that felt like braving the Paths of the Dead armed with nothing but a rusty dagger and questionable optimism. And if you think I won’t indulge in the occasional salty rant about it, you’re as wrong as Boromir thinking he could just "borrow" the One Ring for five minutes. Seriously, some of the drama this year made Geralt’s bathtub scene look downright serene by comparison (yes, I went there).

But despite all the chaos—and trust me, there was enough chaos to make Melkor proud—this year also brought its fair share of bright, shining moments. Like a perfectly timed Igni spell or that rare moment when Gandalf actually explains something without cryptic metaphors, there were pockets of joy that reminded me why this fandom is so special. From stunning fanworks to late-night reblogs that had me cackling like Yennefer after a successful power play, 2024 had its moments of magic.

I’ve been so incredibly lucky to meet some of the most talented, passionate, and downright lovely people here on this little corner of Tumblr. Your art, your fics, your memes—every single one has been like a light in the darkness, more powerful than Galadriel’s phial when Frodo was about to get snacked on by Shelob. From stunning illustrations to stories that made me ugly-cry in the best way, you’ve all created magic that I’ll cherish forever.

This year has shown me how much this fandom is like Rivendell—a refuge where we can come together, share what we love, and let our creativity shine. The support and humor here are unmatched. Whether we’re screaming in the tags, laughing about Elrond being the original “disappointed dad” meme, or waxing poetic about Galadriel’s hair (again, I will never let it go), you’ve made this place feel like home.

And now, here we are, standing on the threshold of a brand-new year. 2025, I’m looking at you, and I have high hopes. I hope this year brings us all the health, rest, and comfort we need after a grueling journey through the land of 2024. Hello & Welcome

To the amazing writers and all my fellow fan-fiction enthusiasts, this blog is new and I’m here to rave and show love for all the wonderfully talented writers who post their stories on here for free although it’s so good they should be charging.

I’ve been in many fandoms through out the years and was lucky to be introduced to the Elvis Presley fandom this last late October. Lots have fell off since the fame of the movie has quieted but the mighty bunch that have stayed are full of love and talent and I’ve never been more warmly welcomed or accepted. And although it’s not as large as other fan bases, I find that it is full of gifted authors because each fic is honestly a work of art. These creators manage to bring Elvis alive and even in ‘AU’ they manage to keep true to the depths of who he was from what we know of him as a person. I think Elvis would be glad to have so many of these lovely ladies thirsting over him and creating angsty/fluffy/smutty perfect scenarios we have of him. Decades have passed since his death but his love for us lives on as does our love and appreciation for him.

I find myself to be what I consider a picky reader, through the years it’s always been hard for me to find more than a handful of fanfics to read, but as I said, I’m incredibly lucky that size does not matter in this fandom because the few who are here are dripping in talent and as such, I get to immerse myself in all that goodness.

As I said I am picky and it’s hard for me to connect with fics (except with the EP fandom there’s so much talent it is the most fic I have read) so although I also happen to be Austin Butler fan and have been for the past year, there has only been one author who’s entire stories I have read and as of recently, I came across another series that is an AU but has got me hooked. Since the list of current recs is shorter let’s start with them -

AB FANFICS : 

@blainesebastian is an amazing writer, I’ve read EVERY. SINGLE. THING. she has written on Austin and recommend everything. Of course at the top of the list is her Coffee Girl Series but everything she writes is gold.

@burninlovebutler Recently I came across her ‘Just An Intern’ series and fell in love with it! There’s just something about lovely Austin being an asshole isn’t there?

ELVIS PRESLEY FANFICS:

@missmaywemeetagain I heard about her on TWITTER - the people were raving about Pink Scarf which is a rite of passage into the EP fandom I think. Recently she also has a new story titled ‘Broken Glass’ that holds the ability to break your heart or heal it and it’s scary we don’t know which way she’s gonna tip.

@precious-little-scoundrel is a gift and for some reason I believe she is a professor because reading her work makes me feel smarter. She’s got me reading an Elvis riverboat captain fanfic from the Reconstruction era, that is the power she holds. A Whole Man Is Hard To Find was the second Elvis fanfiction to be found by me and I quickly fell down the rabbit hole. CP and Rosey own me and their story is a masterpiece. She’s got her Sky High Lovin series which was my introduction in to Big Daddy and I haven’t looked back once since reading it. There’s her Sarge and Lil Mama story - who wouldn’t want to read about Elvis’s life if he had married himself a good Southern women who wanted to be gifted with numerous children. It’s Elvis obsessed with his wife and covered in children and it is great. As of late she has her ‘But Then … Gigi’ story that is Big Daddy in ‘77 if he had been loved correctly and whole heartedly, not for what he could give or offer people. It’s basically a story of what we would all wish for our Big Daddy. I recommend all of the above.

@elvisabutler Speaking of rites of passage into the Elvis fandom, her Professor Presley story feels like a rite of passage into Big Daddy Elvis. Big Daddy as your professor and Belle, the student who has slept with many professors, come together through love. It’s heartbreaking and glorious. Her new story ‘Spark’ is beautifully written and happens to be painful but comforting all at once. Big Daddy Electrician Elvis as a WW2 Veteran turned watcher of the children at church who fixes things for a Miss Lilly - his Lil’ Darlin. I read her Selkie Elvis AU (like I said deep down the rabbit hole) and it’s hurt/comfort but more comfort and I really enjoyed it. Her list of stories is endless for anyone who is an Austin or Elvis fan so you guys are more than free to take a look at those as well and find what else you could enjoy!

@thatbanditqueen ‘No One Walks Out On Big Daddy’ was like finding a pot of gold. Between nailing down his humor, mannerisms, and the way she doesn’t shy away from the heavy physicality of what made Big Daddy so delicious her story has utterly reeled me in. Not to mention, ‘Becky Butt’ is a moniker that just gets stuck in your head and I’m content knowing Elvis can fill his hands by grabbing onto her. It’s Single! Mom and Norah promises so much goodness.

@whositmcwhatsit ‘A Slide To Oblivious’ perfectly captures the head manipulation and thin ice one could wander that many have talked about who dated Elvis. Elvis wasn’t a normal man, he was a beautiful complexity, and he wasn’t easy to handle at times. I love the way Chancy knows the true Elvis so well she can guess on how to handle situations with him. Knows how to talk him off the ledge and bring him back. It’s very angsty but wonderful.

@butlersxbirdy has managed to terrifically converge ‘A Cat On The Hot Tin Roof’ with Big Daddy where he might - possibly, hopefully - pop a cherry and impregnate his adopted son’s wife because his son just ain’t taking his husband duties seriously enough. If you haven’t yet watched the movie I suggest you do, I did after coming across her story and it did help me appreciate it more but you don’t have to watch it to read her story as she will be appplying her own changes and taking different routes I believe. Maggie is also Elizabeth Taylor (as in the movie) which she is just gorgeous. She has got me in anticipation for the next part! Makes me feral to think of the way Maggie wants to be taken care of and the sexiness of when Big Daddy finally takes it upon himself. If you watch the movie you’ll know she can choose to break our hearts but I hope she doesn’t and remains good to us.

@ab4eva She has been on my TBR list forever and I’ve only managed to read ‘Just A Woman’ part 1 but I’ve seen so many speak highly of her ‘Tomorrow Will Be Too Late’ series so make sure you check it out, I sure plan to! ‘Just A Woman’ was heartbreaking, the way Reader was aware she shouldn’t go see Elvis again to protect her heart but at the same time she loves him. Elvis wasn’t perfect, he had his flaws and could be selfish and the way he calls upon the Reader leans in to that side of him.

@be-my-ally Also on my TBR list, my first reading however was a Big Daddy one shot ‘Let Yourself Go’ that was so deliciously hot. Reader tells Elvis she can’t come and has never reached that point and Elvis is such a good Daddy, he takes care of that for his baby.

@crash-and-cure Yandere! Elvis QUEEN. Her ‘If I Were You’ series is a MUST READ, it was my introduction to the yandere themes that I think borderlined with real Elvis at times. My favorite work of hers is ‘Hallelujah’ but I honestly recommend all her works and I cannot lie, I love scoping out her requests page as it makes me excited for what she has coming our way and the requests she receives are amazing!

To all fan-fiction authors thank you for taking time from your busy lives and blessing us with universes for us to get lost in with our favorite man(men.) I am so grateful for you allowing us to have peeks into your heart, head, and soul’s. While fan-fiction may seem ridiculous to many, it isn’t to me, it allows me an escape from when times are hard and life is kicking my ass. It’s a therapy of sorts and I am eternally appreciative of the fact that it exists and that people continue writing and posting it. I hope you all don’t mind me creating this place where I can reblog your works and review them, my favorite parts, what made me feel things, and if any writer ever doesn’t want me consistently commenting and showering love on their works all you have to do is ask I will respect that.

Setting his paintbrush to the side, Tauxolouve took a step back, admiring his painting from its fully glory.

Nasir, who had just came out of their house, was left impressed at the masterpiece of his son, the son he didn't create himself, but felt as if he did. Walking up to the canvas, Nasir's lips naturally curled into a smile. "This is... Excellent." He breathed, genuinely amazed by Tauxolouve's excellence in skills.

Tauxolouve stole a glance at the man he grew up acknowledging as his father, but then again, he wasn't wrong. He raised him with the love and care befitting that of a father's. "You like it?"

"Of course I do." He smiled brightly at him, reaching out a hand to caress his head. "And I'm sure your mom will like it too."

"I want her to see it." Tauxolouve stared up at his father, a spark of young excitement flaming in his dark eyes.

Nasir smiled down at him affectionately, a sense of emotionalism tugging at his heartstrings. Looking down at the young man, he could depict the facial features of his best friend and his mortal wife, mixing into something so precious, they made sure it's safe before they even cared for their own lives.

"Yes, your mom will surely love it." Nasir spoke quietly and Tauxolouve smiled innocently, thinking he was referring to Sofia, not even knowing about the existence of Kronos or Nadi yet. His heart was still pure and without anything to bother about, other than his paintings and his friends. "I have an idea."

Tauxolouve peered up at him intrigued.

"Why don't we hang it in the house?"

Tauxolouve's eyebrows rose, staring at his father a little surprised.

"That is if you're also okay with it. It'd make our house so much prettier."

Tauxolouve's eyes shifted to the colorful canvas and a peaceful smile crept up on his lips.

"What are you two doing?" Sofia's voice reached them as she approached, her white dress flowing in her path.

Nasir motioned for her to come closer, without taking his eyes off the painting and Sofia complied, her face lighting up at the sight of it as well. Nasir chuckled at her expression. "Beautiful, isn't it?"

"Yes...!" She cupped Tauxolouve's cheeks with her hands and pressed her lips to his forehead. "You're so talented, Louie."

With his cheeks still squeezed, he smiled at Sofia, the woman who stayed true by his side and cared for him, like his biological mother didn't managed, even though she wanted to. "Wanna hang it in the living room?" He asked and Sofia's eyes squinted affectionately at him.

"That would be an honour for us." She said, talking for both herself and her husband.

Nasir stole a good and long glace at Tauxolouve and smiled knowingly. "Have you changed your hairstyle?"

"Maybe." He responded and shrugged his shoulders, smiling back slyly.

"It suits him." Sofia said, running her fingers through his silky, slicked back hair.

"If you excuse me," Nasir spoke up. "I need to go make our home beautiful." With caution, he picked up the canvas and Tauxolouve nodded, pleased and proud of himself. "You coming?"

"Later." He said. "I'm gonna practice a little."

"As you wish."

Agreeing to hang the canvas on the wall of their living room, Nasir took it and with caution went inside to place it on the wall and fill up their home with Tauxolouve's beautiful art.

With Nasir and Sofia gone, Tauxolouve had remained alone at the pretty lake with the centaur monument, idly unaware who it was sculpted for.

Tauxolouve focused his eyes on a small rock, sitting my the lake and he snapped his fingers, with the intent to make it float. Upon snapping his fingers, he gasped in surprise at the sudden pain, when an arrow hit him directly in the chest.

A vision flashed before his eyes. The colours were grey and the forms blurry, but he could make out a face. A really crucial face. His own, but more grown up, judging from the maturity of his features.

A woman was leaning against him and he held her close, tightly, the tension of the moment obvious even to an outsider. The woman's face was not clear, but he felt his heart breaking upon looking at her and dread for his own self.

The vision faded after some moments and his eyes were left wide, looking down at his own hands. Shock, fear, despair, he experienced everything at once. "I'm..." He utter in a shaky voice. "I'm going to die..."

International Sculpture Day

International Sculpture Day is observed on the last Saturday of April every year and this year, it falls on April 29. It is an internationally recognized holiday that commemorates the art of sculpture and sculpted works. Sculptures are a type of visual art that is three-dimensional. Stone sculptures have been proven to last significantly longer than other works of art made of perishable materials, and they account for the vast bulk of all surviving non-pottery art from ancient cultures to this day. Sculptures have always been a major component of religious devotion in many cultures, and enormous sculptures were commonly used to represent religion or politics until recently. The ancient Mediterranean, India, and China, as well as various cultures in Central and South America and Africa, have the most surviving sculptures.

History of International Sculpture Day

The first undisputed sculpture pieces came from the Aurignacian culture in Europe and southwest Asia, which was active at the start of the Upper Paleolithic period. This culture developed well-crafted stone tools, pendants, ivory beads, and other forms of art. They are also attributed to being the first to create cave art and three-dimensional figures.

The Löwenmensch, found in Germany’s Hohenstein-Stadel area, is an anthropomorphic figure carved from mammoth ivory. It is believed to be one of the oldest known uncontested examples of figurative art, standing at 0.9 inches tall. Most prehistoric art that has survived to this day is movable sculptures found throughout central Europe.

The Swimming Reindeer from around 13,000 years ago is one of the greatest Upper Paleolithic Magdalenian bone carvings, however, it is outnumbered by engraved pieces, which are sometimes considered sculptures. The Tuc d’Audoubert caves in France, where a talented sculptor used a spatula-like stone tool and his fingers to build a pair of large bison against a limestone rock tens of thousands of years ago, are home to two of the world’s largest prehistoric sculptures.

Much of the figurative sculpture in Europe at the beginning of the Mesolithic era has been greatly reduced. These sculptures have remained less of a common element in art other than relief decoration of practical objects until the Roman period, despite works such as the Gundestrup cauldron from the European Iron Age and the Bronze Age Trundholm sun chariot.

The Mesopotamian conquest, as well as much of its surrounding territory by the Assyrians, created a larger and wealthier state than was previously usual in the region, with particularly grandiose art in palaces and public places, clearly an attempt to match the glory of the Egyptian empire art. The Assyrians created their sculptures in great numbers using easily carved stones from Northern Iraq.

Proserpina in all her Glory

I developed a new interest in art during my tour of Italy, especially that of Baroque style art. One such piece of artwork I took a striking interest in is titled Rape of Proserpina by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, exhibited at the Galleria Borghese. This piece is a perfect illustration of the Baroque theme of drama as the focus of the sculpture is rape (or simply its illusion rather than the literal depiction of it), obvious in the strenuous movement of Prosperina to escape her assaulter, Pluto, the god of the underworld. Characteristics that represent the drama of the scene include Prosperina hand pressed gently but also forcefully against his head and her contorted body movement away from that of Pluto, who is seizing her into the depths of the underworld with him. The physical interaction of the figures and their interaction with the space indicate Baroque period style.

Another feature of baroqueness in this sculpture is the outline of muscular structure and naturalistic qualities of each of the figures. One is able to see clearly Pluto’s ribcage, quad and shin muscles as he struggles to capture Prosperina in his arms. Prosperina is smooth-skinned and her muscle protrusions are a little more subtle, however as pointed out in our discussion of the sculpture at the Galleria Borghese, one can clearly see Pluto’s hands piercing Prosperina’s skin in multiple places, which contributes to the conveyed element of struggle between the figures. One can identify Pluto sharply pressing fingers into Prosperina’s thigh in order to capture her escaping body. Pluto is also shown holding a firm grasp on her waist, Prosperina’s skin sculpted around the shape of his hand. Since 2003, the Bearfootin’ Art Walk has helped raise funding for Downtown Hendersonville and a variety of local non-profits. In addition to raising funds, the bears offer a window into good work being done by community organizations in Henderson County.

The Bearfootin’ Bears arrive as blank slates before local artists transform each in a spectacular fashion, with creative themes ranging from Mona Lisa to Blue Ridge Mountain scenery. After the “Reveal” event in early May, the bears then take up residence in downtown Hendersonville for the duration of the summer and fall, up until auction. Participants bid during the auction to raise funds for local non-profits and Downtown Hendersonville. Winning bids up to $3,000 are split evenly between the downtown program and the nonprofit chosen by the sponsor, while bid amounts exceeding $3,000 are directed entirely to the non-profit.
