I just watched the Making of Percy Jackson, and boy, am I emotional. No joke, it brought tears to my eyes.
The love and dedication that went into making this show is just so apparent, from the directors to the actors to the set designers to the acting coaches. I love that they had Rick invovled in every aspect. I love that so many people involved seemed to be geniune fans of the books and care a great deal about creating this show. Say what you will about the adaption, I know some people have various feelings about it. But it is overtly clear that every decision in the show came from a place of utmost respect to the original books.
Percy is still the same brave, sassy, clever kid who tends to leap before he looks (or looks and then leaps anyways) and who has a distain for the gods and will be loyal to his friends and his family no matter the cost and is just looking for a place to belong.
Annabeth is still the same intelligent, caring, skilled kid who is always thinking ten steps ahead of everyone else and who's struggles to form connections and feel accepted and who can either think or just punch her way out of any situation.
Grover is the same kind, empathetic, strong kid (young man) who wants harmony above all else (both with nature and between people he cares about), and who does things even when he's terrified to help those he loves and whose sense of right and wrong is like a compass to everyone around him.
And what really got me emotional when watching this was the way they all talked about Rick's books. About how he wrote them for his son, who was struggling to fit in so he could have a hero who looked like him. I think that's what drew us all to these books. The complex, beautiful characters who'd all seen so many hardships but were able to push past them and become heroes. I think we all related to these characters in some way and were thrilled to see them succeed in the fascinating setting of Greek mythology.
I read this book when it first came out 18 years ago. I was the same age as Percy. I can tell you exactly where I was when I read the first book and how it pulled me in instantly. I've reread all of these books on a regular basis ever since. It's truly a core part of my personality at this point.
Were there parts of the show that I had envisioned differently? Yes. Are there some moments I feel sad that they left out or changed? Yes.
But there's also things I'm glad they added and changes that make total sense to me. It's been so long since those books came out, and I'm sure Rick had some changes he's always thought about making (any author would, I think).
In the end, I think the most important thing is that I felt the same feelings watching the show as I did reading the book all those years ago. I saw a character who'd been told he didn't fit in and felt like a burden for his entire life come into his own and blossom into a hero on our screens. And honestly, that's all I could have hoped for.

imagine being someone at new rome university and not knowing percy is the same guy as “percy jackson, son of poseidon, two-time hero of olympus, former praetor” because the thought doesn’t even cross your mind. like… he’s percy. he’s a total frat boy. on a normal night, he walks into a party, refers to everyone as bro or dude, socializes with every living (and not-living) person in the room, makes at least 50 sarcastic comments, plays 12 rounds of beer pong, drinks way too much, and then skates around campus on his skateboard yelling “I LOVE NEW YORK” (which makes no sense, because they’re in california) until someone calls his girlfriend to come get him.
and then one day there’s an attack, and frat boy percy is all of a sudden a fighting machine. he’s yelling battle cries alongside the praetors frank zhang and hazel levesque as they lead everyone into battle. (why is he with the praetors? and why…. why in the world do the praetors seem to be following his lead?) his sword slashes through armies of monsters faster than you’ve ever seen. he’s controlling the entire river surrounding the camp, creating huge waves as tall as skyscrapers that crash down all around him, wiping out monsters and causing mass destruction to his enemies’ ranks. the sky is suddenly dark above you, ice-cold water droplets are slashing through the air, and the wind is blowing so aggressively that it’s making it hard to stand up steadily. because he’s somehow created a hurricane.
and he looks terrifying. you can feel the power radiating off of him. he’s like a god. or maybe a monster. it’s hard to tell. you’re a little scared of him, to be honest. but also in total awe, because it’s extraordinary. he’s extraordinary.
frat boy percy is not who you thought he was.

there’s something about poseidon showing up for sally.
luke tells percy that they burn what they’ll miss most so that gods will know that what they’re saying is important so they’re really listen.
but sally burns ice cream. ice cream that she has no attachment to. it’s not even baby percy’s ice cream. it’s just random leftover ice cream that she grabbed from a pile of dirty dishes.
the ice cream could not be more unimportant to sally. in the grand scheme of things, the ice cream is nothing.
but poseidon comes to her anyway. he shows up immediately after probably the most lackluster offering sally could give. he shows up anyway.
just…there’s something about poseidon showing up for sally.

one of my favorite parts about Percy being Obviously Bi™ is he doesn't universally describe one gender as attractive. Like he doesn't just say all girls are cute and guys are just okay or whatever or vice versa. No, he has specific girls he finds pretty and specific guys he finds pretty, and he voices that opinion.
For example - Clarisse? Thalia? Meh. Even Silena, who is canonically very pretty, Percy is relatively neutral on. But Annabeth? Rachel? Calypso? 100%. And based on differences in descriptions like that we can tell when Percy is attracted to somebody versus isn't. He calls everybody else in Beckendorf's cabin ugly and then waxes poetic about how hot Beckendorf is specifically. He'll describe most guys as just "eh" with plain physical descriptors but every time he sees Luke he feels the need to specify that Luke is extremely hot while being very evil and how much he hates Luke's stupid very very pretty face. love that for you Percy. great work.

going to chb must be crazy like imagine sharing a camp with
-one of the strongest demigods ever who's saved the world like at least 3 times, fought multiple gods & titans and WON (and is a tartarus survivor)
-the literal main architect of OLYMPUS who's also saved the world multiple times (also tartarus survivor)
-THE lord of the wild who's also close friends with the first two (and has helped save the world multiple times)
-an emo kid from the 1930s who again helped save the world and is also a tartarus survivor (TWICE)
-a son of apollo who survived tartarus with nothing but cargo shorts and sheer will (pun intended)
-the main designer and builder for the argo II, also the first hephaestus kid to have fire powers since hundreds of years ago (did i mention killed gaea? no? yeah he did that too)
-a girl who somehow charmspeak-ed gaea into falling back asleep (also side note daughter of super famous actor because why not)
-pretty much everybody is a two-time war veteran
-THE GOD APOLLO who just sometimes comes down to visit in the form of a teenage boy
-did i mention dionysus, god of wine madness and theatre
-also chiron, trainer of pretty much every greek hero ever

I saw somebody say that watching the Percy Jackson show made them realize that in the first books Percy doesn't even say half the stuff he thinks and he's just a quiet kid silently judging everyone, like they're so right.
Think about it from Grover's perspective. You know Percy as a quiet boy who certainly has his judgy thoughts but (aside from telling them to you) keeps them to himself. He's just trying to make it through school, for his mom.
Then his mom dies. And he loses the ability to give absolutely any fucks. He starts saying all this shit he never said out loud and to people who could do infinitely worse things to him than anything Nancy Bobifit ever even tried. And it only gets worse as he gets older.
Like bro went from quiet kid in the back of the class to fist fighting a god in the span of like a week. Then he openly told the gods to pay their child support. Grover was having heart attacks every other minute.

headcanon that percy is historically hard to beat at monopoly. and it's intially the most mind-boggling thing ever watching him turn the tide of a game. because he's definitely losing at the beginning. but percy is not only an amazing strategist. he has a deep understanding of money and knows how and when to bet on the board. he knows when to test his luck. and he's amazing at getting into people's head.

percy had an 'im a big three son' moment when he choked a goddess with her own saliva (controlling a fluid that was INSIDE her body) annabeth was terrified.
nico had an 'im a big three son' moment when he disembodied bryce lawrence (quite literally dissipating and shrinking his LIVING soul into a spirit) and threw him to the underworld, smashing his zombie warriors. reyna was terrified.
yet we were robbed of jason's 'im a big three son' moment where he sucks the air out of someone's lungs and makes them stop breathing, or damaging a person's nervous system with his lightning control, and literally cause internal bleeding, or a damaged/fried skull if he electrocuted hard enough (look up the effects of lightning damage on body y'all will get a whole list, tbh he doesn't even need lightning to do any of this, air control is more than enough since air takes charge of everything going inside the body, but this is just an added effect.) he could give people STROKES if he wanted to. he's the literal definition of burnt out kid who was suppressed from discovering the magnitude of his abilities, because one, his dad's ego wouldn't be able to handle it, two, because he, for some reason, can't be allowed to do anything other than get knocked out :/
also adding on, hardcore pjo fans know that after the ending page of boo, there's this fan story that rick chose to publish in the last few pages of the book where a fan reimagines the ending of hoo, in that work, annabeth collapses from an attack and percy sobs clutching her body. jason calmly asks him to step aside, and kneels before annabeth, jason regulates her breathing using his wind/lightning powers and brings annabeth back fully from her cardiac arrest, causing percy to be relieved. (I wanted to link the pics of the pages here so bad but I didn't have the hard copy of the book with me, and this isn't available anywhere online either, only in the original covers of boo uk and us version, so I edited this post and asked people to reblog this post w the pics if they have the hardcopy, and a kind blogger found the story I'm talking about and reblogged the pictures of the pages, you can check my reblogs of this post for the pictures of the almost all the pages after this scene) considering rick approved and even liked the fan's work well enough to publish it in the official boo book, I'd say rick was aware and never completely ruled out expanding jason's abilities and had them in mind, he simply didn't incorporate it into the books. (also W fan for giving jason the rep he deserves, I will always remember you, you saw the VISION before any of us did, the story was very well written, with great dialogue.)

percy: *in olympus after accidentally creating a natural disaster and causing mass destruction*
zeus, glaring at poseidon: well? don’t you have something to say to your dear son, brother?
poseidon: er, right. look perseus, what you did was reckless, destructive, and incredibly melodramatic.
percy: *looks down*
poseidon: however, it was also wrong.
