24 Calistril
Lady Jamandi suspects, as I do, that something drastic must have prompted the Black Tears to attack the Manor—perhaps some power in the Stolen Lands has bought or forced their hands in an effort to stop the settlement charters, but the house of Aldori is not so easily broken. The Iron Wraiths were sent to a place known as the Glenabon Uplands, and Hennis Drelov to Hook-Tongue Slough. Lord Varn has been dispatched with a company of his house knights to Nomen Heights, while the adventurers Amiri, Valerie, Harrim, and Linzi will roam the wilds and support as they see fit.
As for our party, our charge is to settle and secure a region known as the Greenbelt, southwest of Oleg’s Trading Post to the banks of the Shrike and Skunk rivers, and root out the rampant banditry.
Lady Jamandi was incredibly grateful not only for our help in defending the keep, but also for our honesty in returning the borrowed weapons and supplies, which she gifted to us in a show of thanks. I feel confident in counting her as an ally, and a powerful one, not only for her strength at arms but also for her social standing.
This venture may prove more fruitful than I had hoped.
1 Pharast
We stopped in a village known as Nivikta’s Crossing for several days to resupply before setting out for Oleg’s Trading Post. The cleric Kara was quite generous with her magical assistance—lovely woman. Much debate over the merits of buying horses and a cart, but there is no guarantee of good roads in the Greenbelt and Athos is far too large for a traditional horse, so for now we will continue on foot. The walk is easy enough.
We did spot a tower to the southwest below the falls. Some sort of fortification? It merits investigation later.
4 Pharast
Oleg is kind enough, but it’s clear that his wife Svetlana is the master of this post. Per her reports, the bandits first visited three months ago, within an hour of dawn on the fifth of the month. They threatened to burn the outpost to the ground unless the owners handed over all of their goods—they also stole Svetlana’s wedding ring, as ‘compensation’ for allowing Oleg to keep both of his hands attached. Each month they have returned on the same day, at the same time, though always with fewer men.
The leaders seem to be a cruel woman with a pair of hatchets—the one who suggested cutting off Oleg’s hand—and her brute of a partner, a hooded man who has developed his brawn in lieu of a brain. Only the man has returned on subsequent raids, so we will need to take care to track down the woman in order to quash this band completely.
Tomorrow we will ambush the visitors when they arrive to take away the goods, then travel to their camp—Svetlana believes it to be to the southwest, within a day’s ride—and deal with the remainder. If we move swiftly enough, the ruffians at the base will not yet have begun to fear for their dead comrades.

Being unable to drive is actually a huge economic handicap. My legally blind partner and I live in Baltimore, an hour away from DC. My partner is a very gifted IT person (what they call a "unicorn", someone who is adept with programming and administration), and DC has a huge demand for IT jobs, and is reachable by train. But even then, there were so many occasions where I had to drive him, or I had to drive him to the train because neither taxis nor mobility services were any good at being on time (Uber has fixed this problem for now, but I'm sure the enshittification is coming). The trains would stop running and he'd have to take a DC Metro (DC's subway) line to Greenbelt, which is 45 minutes away. Greenbelt has a train station, and a Metro station, but they're not near enough each other to walk.
And there were a lot of equally lucrative jobs closer to home -- 30 min away in Columbia, 45 min in Rockville or Gaithersburg, etc -- which he could not take, because I couldn't take that much time to drive him and then drive back home, every day. And of course, your economic survival shouldn't depend on whether you have a partner who can drive.
There are people with good vision who this affects too -- epileptics, for instance -- but this is a huge issue for people with low vision and there are a lot of problems they face trying to get the services people who are more blind are entitled to. Some services won't be given to people if they can make any significant use of their eyes at all. Others, you keep having to get checked even if your disorder is chronic and present from birth. My husband's eyes aren't magically going to get better.
And here's one of those cases of "racism hurts white people, too" -- one of the reasons there are so many communities that have worked very hard to not be accessible by public transporation is racism. These assholes are terrified of black people from DC or Baltimore taking public into their communities, so they build communities that can only be driven to, and then they give businesses tax breaks to move their headquarters there, and then everyone who can drive gets stuck in brutal traffic and everyone who can't drive, regardless of their race, is shut out. (As a white person, I am infuriated at the degree to which my fellow white people will make all people, including me, suffer, just because they don't want black people getting any nice things. Motherfuckers, how is shitting on anyone worth harming yourself? But I digress.)
People with low vision have it better in many ways than people with traditional blindness, but it's still a really shitty situation to be in. It's not well known that low vision is even a thing for young people, and old people are assumed to be retired and don't need to commute to jobs. There's also the issues of difficulty with large print (actual books you can use an e-reader, but this doesn't fix menus, so if you have to stop for a quick bite, hope you brought your magnifying glass). People with low vision and photophobia, like albinos, literally cannot see at high noon if there is no shade, and of course parking lots are never shaded, so I have to lead my healthy adult partner by the hand through the parking lot if we go somewhere in the middle of the day. My autistic albino son had issues where his texture issues with things on his head prevented him from wearing baseball caps to protect his eyes from sunlight.
i don't think people take me too serious when i say i'm legally blind. Like, guys I am legally never allowed to drive, I need assistance with a lot of stuff because I can't see. People both irl and online tend to be like "oh but you're not THAT BAD OFF" it's not a thing of whether my eyes are "that bad off" it doesn't matter, they're still blind. i still use magnifying and screen readers. i'm learning braille because my eyes are getting progressively worse and I'd like to be able to still read.
I may not be totally blind, but that's the thing, a lot of blind people AREN'T Totally blind. Blindness is a spectrum. and i don't think a lot of people realize that. And I'm just as valid in my blindness as someone on the spectrum with better eyesight than me, or someone with worse.
(This is OK to reblog. I hope that sighted people who might read this really get it into their heads that blindness is a spectrum...)

MTG: Duskmourne Signposts
A new set, a new season of mastery, a new addition to standard, and above all else, a new wave of the same complaints has happened. Behold the ongoing ruination of Magic: The Gathering by the continued existence of Magic: The Gathering!
With the release of Duskmourne we got a new set of signpost uncommons. Signpost uncommons, if you’re not familiar, are cards for the limited environment that are meant to reward you for drafting a deck in those colours, or to give you a direction to take from that point if you’re new and not good at drafting (like meeeeee (new at drafting? I’ve been playing this game for twenty years and drafting regularly this year, what am I talking about)).
Anyway, signpost uncommons are great cards for casual and low-end play because they typically work as some kind of engine card, a card that stays on the table permanently (unless people do something about it) and convert some kind of resource into some other kind of resource which means your deck has a plan, a strategy for how it works. With Duskmourne, we have a bunch of those and I like to look at them in the context of ‘hey, does this give me access to a new, simple, available deck without needing a bunch of wild cards?’
Any time I talk about deck making in the context of standard, I am thinking of Arena, where I have managed to avoid paying money for decks after my $10 startup, which I think is pretty reasonable. There are some cards I can rely on you having if you want to follow in my footsteps — things like the common dual lands, for example, they come free with the client. Otherwise, though, there’s some wiggle room where I may mention cards that are good or bad for a deck, but only because you just might have them in the booster-pulling world of Arena. If there’s something where two cards working together may ‘make’ the deck as it were, I’ll be limiting those recommendations to uncommons and lower. Other cards, like rares, are only interesting if they’re good if you have one or more of them, so having any is nice, but they’re not necessary to the concept.
Here then are some of the signpost uncommons from Duskmourne and how I am going to approach making decks with them.
Growing Dread
Growing Dread is obviously meant to interact with and benefit the ‘manifest dread’ mechanic from Duskmourne. It’s a way to get creature bodies that don’t need creature cards, in the vein of tokens, without necessarily being tokens. First thoughts:
Is there anything in standard that wants ‘nontoken creatures’ in volume?
How easy is it to Manifest Dread repeatedly?
What else can I turn up?
That third question is the thing that immediately presents an interesting answer, at least to me. Specifically, it presents Bubble Smuggler. If you’re not familiar with the mechanics at work here, Bubble Smuggler has Disguise. You can play it face-down for 3 mana, get a 2/2 ward 2, then pay its Disguise cost to flip it face up – six mana – and then its ability sees it being turned face up and puts 4 +1/+1 counters on it. That’s a pretty decent cost to get a 6/5. But if the Bubble Smuggler gets face-down for some other reason, like if it was Cloaked or Manifested, then you can turn it up for 2 mana (as Manifest Dread says) and it will still notice it got turned face up, getting those counters.
This goes both ways, too. A manifested Nervous Gardener, if Manifest Dreaded onto the battlefield can still be flipped up for G. This presents the question of looking for cards in standard that have the word ‘turned up’, and have a reasonably low base mana value, in green and blue. Here’s the scryfall search.
In that search, the ‘best’ interactions here are Greenbelt Radical, Exit Specialist, Mistway Spy, and of course, Bubble Smuggler. Those can all get put on the battlefield on their own, and cheap Disguise costs mean that even if they come down on their own, as Disguise cards, they benefit from the counter from growing dread. From there, that’s a list of five cards, and a deck can be seen as ‘four copies of nine cards, plus lands.’ Green-blue also offers Break Down The Door and Twist Reality as utility effects that can further the Dread and its Manifesting.
Now, perspective: This is not likely to be amazing or powerful. This is likely to be a reasonably cheap deck to make that can do something cute and gum up the board, and then you have to win with combat tricks and bluffs. In a world of Everyone Has A Midrange Golgari Deck it might not be good enough to push, so focus on this only if you find the idea behind it fun.
Of course, in the vein of rares, you could also add Vannifar, Evolved Enigma, or Cryptic Coat, which let you play with the same tools repeatedly.
Gremlin Tamer
This started out with a look at Inquisitive Glimmer. That card opens up something interesting there, with the idea of a deck full of enchantments that cost 1C, and 3C, so that the Glimmer turns them into 1 drops, or can curve out after the Glimmer. For example, with Grand Entryway // Elegant Rotunda, each side is a meaningfully playable card at its cost, but with the Inquisitive Glimmer, it’s a pretty potent followup. You cast the I-G, then you make a token for 1, then you unlock the second room to put a +1/+1 counter on both that token and the Glimmer. That’s a pretty cool chain, and you can also add in the Optimistic Scavenger, which would at that point have 4 +1/+1 counters on it (one from the Inquisitive Glimmer, one from the Grand Entryway, one from the token the Entryway made, one from unlocking the Rotunda).
That’s cool!
If you don’t have the Inquisitive Glimmer, you still get to go Scavenger->Entryway and attack for 3 on turn 2, which is also cool, and then unlock and buff both of them, again, which is… kinda an interesting arc for a mono-white deck.
But while I was looking at this I realised that there’s a more interesting signpost here, which is the Gremlin Tamer and how it interacts with roles from Wilds of Eldraine. That is, permanents that create other enchantments. These let you barf permanents onto the battlefield. Quantity is a quality all of its own. Repeated ways to generate the enchantment tokens include things like Gadwick's First Duel and Splashy Spellcaster. This deck can use Case of the Gateway Express, too, which both serves as a type of removal and a payoff for having lots of little dudes!
As far as adding rares though? Some cool options, like Caretaker's Talent and Spellbook Vendor — cards where a single card’s addition adds to what you can do!
Sawblade Skinripper
Alright, get a load of this card and ignore that whole first part. Sure, it’s a 3/2 menace for 3 with an ability to sacrifice creatures or enchantments to get counters. That’s cool, whatever.
It’s the last thing. It’s that this card damages opponents equal to the number of permanents you’ve sacrificed this turn. Treasures, Food, and Clues are all things you can sacrifice on your turn, though Treasures are obviously the cheapest way to do that. It doesn’t care whether you sacrifice them to the Sawblade Skinripper, it just cares about whether or not they happened. It’s also an Assassin meaning it fits alongside Outlaws, like Boneyard Desecrator.
Here’s a search for all the standard legal, RB-compatible treasure generation that’s not rare. Of those cards, Beamtown Beatstick, Enterprising Scallywag, Treasure Dredger and Diamond Pick-Axe. If you want to look at creatures, here’s that search, and I’d be interested in the cards you can sacrifice for no cost. That’s not a thick list; there’s just Digsite Conservator, which is the only creature in standard that can sacrifice itself mana-free, and it’s sorcery speed.
Still, there are other sacrifice support cards. Gixian Infiltrator, Reckless Detective, and Crime Novelist. Those aren’t a bad place to look as well, especially since there’s a similar signpost card from Brother’s War, Junkyard Genius. The problem there is that it costs 3 mana and this kind of deck that wants to make permanents and then sacrifice them is going to be struggle. It’s not like red-black has a lot of powerstone generation under the rares!
Other Thoughts
This is just three of the signposts available in Duskmourne, with a nice horrible, spooky aura all around it. This is how I approach finding solutions to these cards, and ways that I can put the pieces together in a way that’s going to be interesting without demanding I spend a pile of wildcards.
Check it out on PRESS.exe to see it with images and links!

writing a small story
On a cold and dreary afternoon in the small town of Milkweed in Tennessee a poster hangs blowing about roughly against the staples holding It upright. It’s a missing poster with a poorly printed photo of a young man. The description says that’s he’s 18 and that his name is Austen Dawn and the height saying 5’7. In the poster that looks like a 5-year-old took, a boy with a hazelnut hair color and freckles covering his face. He has glasses and crooked teeth, with pale skin that looks less human and more vampire.
The area in which the poster is hanging is not one that gets much foot traffic. To any other person who sees this poster they would assume that there are more hanging all around in attempts to find him. Unfortunately, this one desolate poster is the only one that remains of Austen Dawn. Forgotten to the world and most importantly unwanted by family.
Three weeks prior Austen was living a normal life. He was still a high schooler at this time, he was a senior in Julius High. At 5am the alarm on his phone rings loudly to the tune of Smokey mama. Austen’s favorite band. Austen would get dressed in a regular blue polo shirt and old worn jeans that had faded a considerable amount. He would comb his dense fluffy hair and put on one grey sock and a black one and his boots. By 6am he would make his breakfast and lunch for the day. Breakfast he made toast and sunny side up eggs. For lunch he made a toasted ham and cheese sandwich, grapes, and baby carrots. When 7am rolled around he was in school surrounded by his classmates.
As he walked down the hall passing classmates, teachers, and even his friend Oliver he would think it would be any other day. For all those people it would be the day they look back and regret not saying goodbye to him. Hed wave hi to the math Teacher Mr. Lindsy and PE teacher Mrs. Drew, Mrs. Drew nodding and the math teacher ignoring him. And as he sat down for the morning bell and announcements people would be talking in the back of the classroom about whatever new trend was on social media. Austen would sit alone in the middle of the classroom not talking to anyone. He was quiet and reserved, he didn’t know anyone in the class nor made any real effort into trying. They never returned the favor so it stayed like this. As classes passed and lunch came by Austen would go to the library to meet with Oliver.
Most weren’t allowed to eat in the library but the librarian Ms. Tubbson let it slide since she too was a loner in high school. Oliver and Austen ate lunch and they played magic the gathering together. Oliver claimed some of Austin’s baby carrots as his own much like how he claimed Greenbelt Radical from Austen. Oliver joked that he’d return the card to him after his match against his brother. Two days he was supposed to hold onto the card, but he has yet to return the card back to Austen. Lunch ended and Austen went to the rest of his classes, he was assigned 8 different pieces of homework. 2:30pm classes ended and Austen decided he wanted to go home and not hang out with Oliver that day. The weather at this time was partially sunny but rain clouds were on the horizon and fast approaching.

Making Memorable Events at Boise Venues with Drone Light Shows
When it comes to creating unforgettable experiences at events, the choice of entertainment plays a pivotal role. In Boise, a city celebrated for its vibrant cultural scene and stunning landscapes, drone light shows have emerged as a cutting-edge entertainment option that captivates and mesmerizes audiences. These aerial displays harness the power of technology and creativity to transform any event into a spectacle. Let's dive into how incorporating drone light shows at Boise venues can elevate your event from ordinary to extraordinary.
The Appeal of Drone Light Shows
Drone light shows are not just about adding a visual element to an event; they are about creating an immersive experience that engages attendees on multiple levels. Unlike traditional fireworks, drone light shows are environmentally friendly, less noisy, and can be programmed to synchronize with music, narratives, or branding themes, making them a versatile choice for a variety of events.
Why Boise is Perfect for Drone Shows
Boise's combination of clear skies, beautiful parks, and spacious outdoor venues makes it an ideal backdrop for drone light shows. The city's community-oriented spirit also means that events tend to attract large, enthusiastic crowds eager for unique entertainment experiences. From the Boise River Greenbelt to the spacious grounds of the Idaho Botanical Garden, there are numerous venues in Boise that are perfect for showcasing spectacular drone performances.
Tailoring Drone Shows to Your Event
1. Corporate Events: Enhance brand visibility and leave a lasting impression on clients and employees with a drone show designed around your company logo or corporate colors.
2. Weddings: Add a magical touch to your special day with a drone show that includes romantic elements like hearts or messages in the sky, making your celebration truly one-of-a-kind.
3. Festivals: Whether it's a music festival or a local cultural event, drone shows can be synchronized with performances to enhance the overall atmosphere and provide attendees with a multi-sensory experience.
4. Public Celebrations: For city-wide celebrations and holidays, drone shows can be themed to fit the occasion—be it Fourth of July stars and stripes, New Year’s Eve countdowns, or special commemorative displays.
Planning Your Drone Light Show in Boise
Choose the Right Provider: Partner with a reputable drone light show company that understands local regulations and has experience with Boise venues. This ensures a smooth, compliant, and safe performance.
Venue Considerations: Not all venues are suitable for drone shows. Choose a location that has enough open space to safely accommodate the drones’ flight path and the audience's viewing area.
Customization: Work closely with the drone show provider to customize the performance to your event's theme. This could involve selecting specific colors, patterns, or even integrating logos and words into the drone formations.
Technical Setup: Ensure there is adequate time for technical setup and rehearsals. This will help address any potential challenges before the event.
Making It Memorable
The success of a drone light show isn't just about the lights in the sky; it's also about how those moments make the audience feel. To maximize impact:
Capture the Moment: Encourage attendees to share their experiences on social media. Provide hashtags or interactive elements that can help spread the word about the event and your brand or cause.
Focus on the Finale: Often, the most memorable part of the drone show is the finale. Work with your provider to create a jaw-dropping final sequence that leaves a lasting impression.
Feedback and Follow-Up: After the event, gather feedback from attendees to gauge the show’s impact. This information can be invaluable for planning future events.
Conclusion
Drone light shows in Boise offer more than just entertainment; they provide a unique opportunity to create unforgettable moments that resonate with all who attend. By leveraging the technological marvels of drone choreography, event planners in Boise can deliver experiences that are not only visually stunning but also emotionally engaging. Whether it's a wedding, a corporate event, or a city festival, a drone light show can elevate your gathering into a mesmerizing celebration that will be talked about for years to come.

Hubble captures the start of a new spoke season at Saturn
Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn’s much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun. The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn’s northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable. The suspected culprit for the spokes is the planet’s variable magnetic field. Planetary magnetic fields interact with the solar wind, creating an electrically charged environment (on Earth, when those charged particles hit the atmosphere this is visible in the northern hemisphere as the aurora borealis, or northern lights). Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings. The ring spokes were first observed by NASA’s Voyager mission in the early 1980s. The transient, mysterious features can appear dark or light depending on the illumination and viewing angles. “Thanks to Hubble’s OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before,” said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program. Saturn’s last equinox occurred in 2009, while NASA’s Cassini spacecraft was orbiting the gas giant planet for close-up reconnaissance. With Cassini’s mission completed in 2017, and the Voyager spacecrafts long gone, Hubble is continuing the work of long-term monitoring of changes on Saturn and the other outer planets. “Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season,” Simon said. While our solar system’s other three gas giant planets also have ring systems, nothing compares to Saturn’s prominent rings, making them a laboratory for studying spoke phenomena. Whether spokes could or do occur at other ringed planets is currently unknown. “It’s a fascinating magic trick of nature we only see on Saturn — for now at least,” Simon said. Hubble’s OPAL program will add both visual and spectroscopic data, in wavelengths of light from ultraviolet to near-infrared, to the archive of Cassini observations. Scientists are anticipating putting these pieces together to get a more complete picture of the spoke phenomenon, and what it reveals about ring physics in general. The Hubble Space Telescope is a project of international cooperation between NASA and ESA. NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, manages the telescope. The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore conducts Hubble science operations. STScI is operated for NASA by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, in Washington, D.C.

Marcel gave a thoughtful little sound as he watch Theren stretched out his stiffened muscles, the long shadows cast by the cities spires letting him know that maybe they had spent a little to long sitting in one place. Reaching out he slipped his lase covered fingers around the rough palm of the bard, the other suddenly feeling all the stuffiness leave his body as Marcel wove a simple healing spell for his starlight. Giving Theren that shy crooked smile as the two set off for his logging on Ravnica.
As the heel of his traveling boots left the well manicured grass of the sculpted grotto to clack on the cobbled pavement, he could feel the cold rush up his spine. No mater how long he stayed on this plane Marcel knew he would never get uses to feeling nothing but more cold empty city beneath his steps. Rather then the warmth of the good earth that could be found just below most cities streets.
It was a short walk from their secluded little spot in the greenbelt of precinct 3 to the border of the markets of the second precinct. To a little flower shop called the Wolf and the Rose, the the life mage called home. Marcel had mentioned once that the shop had been here since the signing of the guild pack, the owners just building a new shop on top of the old one when the city threatened to swallow it. Like a oakling fighting it's was to the sunlight above the canopy.
Marcel quickly leading them around a side ally to the living space attacked to the back of the shop.
"Please make yourself comfortable, I will try to change as quickly as I can," he quickly apologies as a little pink colored his cheeks. The healer quickly making his ways up a well hidden staircase leaving Theren in the large room he had converted in a back ally clinic.
In the corner was a large cozy looking bed covered in hand stitched blankets with a unicorn pattern, the same bed Theren had spent a night in after his brush with jellyfish poison. A large medical cabinet was close by to it, stuffed full of potions, bandages and anything else Marcel would need to tend to the sick that found heir way to him. Across from that was a massive dark oak desk pressed up against the faded sunflower wallpaper. Scattered across it was Marcel research into vampirisms of different planes.
The Floramorian having filled the small space with as many plants as he could. Of note was a gathering of seemingly random flowers gathered in a vase next to his desk. The only thing they had in common was that they had each been given to Marcel by Theren. The healer using his magic to expand their lifespan, keeping them fresh and in bloom.

A Sunny Afternoon
Theren found himself under the shade of the counterculture of the urban spires of the city, the foliage of one of the groves of the Precinct Three. He and Marcel were relaxing in its embrace, Theren mindlessly strumming his lute while. He rested his head in Marcel’s lap. Ever since their jaunt to Kaladesh they’d been dating, for a few months now. Really, since Theren first met Marcel, when Marcel saved him from being drugged at a Simic bar, that he had been pining for the healer. Marcel was so kind and sweet to Theren and he was happy that they were together.
Laying with his head on Marcel, he began to reminisce over the past few months with Marcel. He thought about how they both didn’t realize how close they lived to one another until Marcel visited the farmer’s market being held in the Fauna Square. Marcel was there to find the ingredients for a recipe called “ratatouille” that Theren had heard of before. Theren was just playing outside of the Oak Street Inn. From there, the two often would have dates in Precincts Two and Three. Hearing the joyous bellow of a brushstrider shook Theren out of his reminiscing.
He looked up at the eyes of his boyfriend and smiled saying, “This has been a wonderful day, hasn’t it?” @reds-ocs-rps
