"coelacanth" by glass beach

So far no one's really bought my "glass beach are zoomer Animal Collective" comparison, for various reasons, mostly credible, but I'm still clinging to it by my fingernails and Grooves N Jams dot com does not have an editor obviously, so. I think of the first time I heard "Slippi," the sense that I had no idea what I was listening to or where it might go next. I think of how half their songs seemed to run on a first-idea-best-idea ethos that sometimes resulted in chaos or boredom but sometimes reached transcendence. I think of how they clearly got more out of drugs than I've ever managed. and these are all things that Animal Collective, classic millennial hipster band, has in common with glass beach, psych-pop zoomer group. Especially on "coelacanth," which throws in some early-period Panda Bear pyrotechnics on the drums for good measure. I like "coelacanth" more in concept than execution - it never quite coheres, the lead guitar isn't as hooky as it could be, and maybe it needs to let those interludes breathe a little more even if it means making the song nine minutes instead of almost seven. But there's something exciting happening here, even if it's not totally clicking into place yet. As another millennial band once put it, do not ignore the potential.

Um, but this is math rock? "coelacanth" has more in common with the "Eruption" solo than anything Animal Collective ever did, let's not drag those well-meaning improvisationalists into what is actually a highly composed post-rock dirge. In its boredom and recalcitrance, I suppose I do hear something kind of millennial -- it's like Bella Swan, or her wardrobe, at least. As it pertains to Gen Z, well, they are trying so, so hard to bring jazz back to the national consciousness and I think that's where "coelacanth" best fits. As much as mainstream media loves to complain about their short attention spans and irreverence for history and its import, I've always felt it's like avocado toast and Applebee's. glass beach are capable of dizzying complexity (less complexity next time, please) and clearly want to tap into some erstwhile dormant vein of creative expression. There's nothing new under the sun, this is sure to remind everyone of something.

Hell yeah this week I listened to "Hlllyh" by the Mae-Shi

I give it a three because I had a lot of fun but, I do not think that I will be consistently coming back to this album in the long run

I had a lot of fun with this album! It was an ask suggestion, and I don't think I would have heard about it any other way. I very much enjoyed these tracks and they iched my brain in the perfect way!

Lots of fun religious stuff going on in this one, and as someone who only listened to exclusively tøp for 4 years of my life (/srs), I always find that fun

Opinion Time!!! (album order as always, not any specific opinion order)

"Pwnd" Wow this is a fun one. I'm now realizing that this album is from 2008 and using the term pwnd was probably much less of an ironic title, but it holds up and is still a sick song. It tells a very specific story, and I think it's fun. I found this song getting stuck in my head a lot this week. I love the shouting at the end and the drums at the start. I also love the main character talking and how they progress throughout the song to be much less calm and collected.

"The Melody" is a great song and I love the vocals on this one. I've done very little research into the band themselves and I have no idea who that is but how they sing is addictive. I love the instrumental I love the guitar playing in it.

"Book of Numbers" is my last pick, it has a really sweet sound. I very much enjoy the vocals. I love just the way the whole song sounds even if the lyrics are literally "forecast bodies line the streets". I really love how this album plays with themes of death.

Ok, this album has a lot I liked the whole thing!

"Run to Your Grave" I love the structure of this song and the drums dear lord I love the drums. The verses are a lot of fun and so is the song

"Kingdom Come" I gotta give this track a shout, 11 minutes of amazing instrumental.

"Hlllyh" what a namesake track, this one is fun, very similar to a lot of the midwest emo I listen to at the moment, might be an influence. I like this one.

"Divine Harvest" is such a good way to end the album. I love how it's a chanty type of song and that it's so hopeful after the album. I also like how it is distinguished from the other tracks. it's fun how it wraps up the album in accepting death.
