Gifted and 'time of hate and fear' totally work as neutral descriptions of the time they refer to. They're intuitive and even celebratory - the heroic poses and splash-style layouts.

The Lost Decade is hard to see as a positive thing though. Looked at one way it's the Phoenix Five who are in conversation with House of M and the post-Morrison years. They're supremely powerful and facing down Cap and Wolverine. There are some excellent runs in there, certainly some of my favourites.

Another way to look at it is they're literally on fire. From one pointless event to another, first solving a problem that didn't need solving then bending the entire line towards an arc of desperation and defeat, only to have House of M undone. The Phoenix definitely lost its marbles. The X-Men went to war with everyone, even each other, even future versions of themselves. They were kicked out of the US. Chuck and Jean were dead for a bunch of it and Cyclops was persona non grata. Logan was running the school. It could be referring to the state of big two comics in the 2000-2010s and the increasingly dark and edgy tone. Either way I find it funny.

Mayyybe I'm overthinking it, but it feels like a cheeky wink at something. Hickman was one of the writers of AvX, so it's bound to be in good spirits. What is your interpretation of The Lost Decade?

Recently I started referring to the early pandemic years — while, yes, we're still very much still within — as "the great pandemic". This tends to work better in conversation than other lackluster attempts to define those years, as the phrase captures the overwhelming scale of the event, while carrying just the right amount of sardonic bite to keep things light and sarcastic about the magnitude of those dark, lost, years.

Perhaps that is just our nature, this tendency to jest about the tragedies that befall us. Humor is often how we hold on to our humanity in the midst of such immense hardship, a way to hold on to our humanity, our sanity, when everything around us feels like it’s crumbling into the void of despair, absolutely uncontrollable, utterly unknowable. Some might argue that joking — even with such a small phrase that harbors both a literal and sarcastic double entendre – about something so devastating is in poor taste— that it’s a subject to be handled with somber tones, or perhaps not at all, even though tragedy invariably leaves its mark on us in ways we may not consciously notice or understand.

But, I believe that allowing ourselves to describe these harrowing times with a sardonic twist is a sign of something healthy, a way to reclaim some sense of control over the uncontrollable. It’s proof that even when faced with absolute, unknowable catastrophe, we’re hardwired to find hope — to laugh in the dark because, deep down, we still believe there’s light ahead as long as we dream for it.

I am going to go ahead and start calling the cultural years between 2015 and 2025 as "the lost decade" because I just never want to think about it again.

It's quite fascinating to watch video game consoles tiptoeing less than sneakily into ONLY having digital games. Like I feel crazy watching this happen in real time, esp w the release of the digital only Xbox series X. Is the average gamer just cool w this?? With not actually owning your games and the death of used games??
