teeechnically his descendant, and it causes a game over… but this is the only time we’ve been able to marry him right?

so in the girl version of HMDS, there’s two “secret” Mineral Town bachelors that you can marry by talking to them enough times on the phone. one is Mason, the guy who runs May’s Tailoring… but the second, Pastor Carter, is a bit more obscure…

i couldn’t find them uploaded anywhere so here are his 2nd* thru 10th conversations+his proposal+proposal rejection in english! if you want to see it on youtube instead here you go

*i failed to record the first conversation when it happened, and there’s no way in hell i’m resetting my whole game again (…yet), so…just know the first one was like “oh you want to talk? what should we talk about…….. …… ….. …. i can’t think of anything. well see ya………” extremely riveting stuff

he’s so obscure that i didn’t even realize that he was a bachelor until i found out about the mechanic from this japanese wiki!! (here’s an archive link to the page on him in case the page doesn’t work) all i did was test whether it worked in english since i couldn’t find any english info at all mentioning it. i’m sure others have found him… right……..

it works essentially the same as the Mason marriage (so it’s just a game over, sadly…), and the steps are pretty tedious and counterintuitive, so you’re unlikely to just stumble across it… but you too can get a priest to break his vow of celibacy for you or whatever!

you will need:

at least 2,050,000 G

20 cursed tools/accessories

if you really don’t want to dig up 20 cursed things you can substitute 100x “remove a cursed tool/accessory” for blessing a cursed tool…

but, including all the cursed tools and accessories, there’s only 16… which means you will need to go dig up 4 duplicate cursed accessories using this method! yay!!! extremely pointless since you can’t sell blessed accessories until after marriage in DS for girl (at which point you can’t trigger pastor carter’s proposal)

you unlock a conversation with cardi when you spend at least 205,000 G. which means the quickest thing to do is to order removal of a cursed item five times, then bless 2 cursed items.

**be careful when blessing accessories to only equip one at a time!!! if you equip a stack of duplicate accessories, blessing that stack destroys the duplicates!!!! :( so just take 1 out of the stack and equip it!!!**

you also can’t unlock more conversations until you’ve seen the one you unlocked, so like even if you spend a million G you’ll just unlock one conversation, and you’ll need to finish that conversation and then spend 205,000 G to unlock the next one…yeah….

on the tenth conversation he abruptly reveals that he’s fallen in love with you and asks you to marry him! it ends your game, but….! on the bright side, it ends your game!!! you’re finally free from Hell Simulator!!!!

Additional note: their breed name comes from the shape of their tail featuring a leaf-shaped blade resembling the spear used by soldiers during the early Roman Republic

Also their classification of heavyweight is based on Roman era standards and for a good portion of the early middle ages when dragons were smaller. In the modern era (at the time of Skies over Jura and canon Temeraire) they're comparable to a large middleweight

When have you written sad endings? Sure you love to stab us right into the hearts but you always end on a happier, hopeful note.

oh man i know exactly what you mean by this ask and it's very true that it has been a while since i've published a sad ending and perhaps just as long since i've sat myself down and written out a sad end.

But you have stumbled upon a secret Nani lore question, which you in particular seem to have an aptitude of doing haha but there is an actual answer and it was ne me quitte pas that i wrote in 2017.

lord knows how i came up with an evil amnesia fanfic where one of the characters forgets their divorce but that fic caused...so much devastation. And because the football fandom even back then was small all I'd seemed to have really done was make my friends sad, even though the reaction was positive (unlike what happens when i write angst for this fandom where im genuinely confused like 50% of the time what the reaction is lol).

One friend in particular, @saintdevote just loved the fic so much and well it wasn't like I wasn't hurt by it either. So I wrote out a whole second part to give the characters their happy end to give us both some closure. It was an extremely satisfying feeling. In addition to which, very soon after I watched the movies God's Own Country and Moonlight. These are both still my top 2 movies of all time and I think the fact they had happy ends really changed the way that I engaged with grief and absence as an author.

This means in the 8 years of on and off fandom before 2017 I wrote a lot of sad ends. My nickname in LJ Arashi fandom was in fact little angst queen. And the little referred to my age not the amount of angst. The very first fanfic I wrote was *dun dun dunnnnn* an adopted brothers sad end fic (does the fadelbison obsession make some sense lmao).

Even now I have a ton of sad end fics waning in my fic drafts simply because they are sad ends that i haven't figured out how to make happy - FK boudoir photoshoot, FK at Joss's sex party, FK Prince and bodyguard AU and believe it or not even First Kanaphan Kissing Booth [dont look at me I have no answers why a fic about everyone at GMM kissing first would just do that] <- you've read bits and pieces of these through the years but dear god i dont expect you to remember them.

Three fics that I've published on AO3 in this fandom were sad ends that I painstakingly sculpted towards happier ends. But part of the reason I answered this is to semi-giddily announce that I'm writing one now. After over a year, I have finally decided to just write the FK boudoir photoshoot with the bad end kjhgfdssdfghj i am legit nervous about it since i suffer from the sadly common needs to be liked disease comorbid with idgaf disease (striking the balance between them is fun and also oft elusive)

Which other characters do you feel have been most misrepresented or poorly localised apart from Rock/Romeo?

most of the characters would be localized differently if DS/cute had been localized by xseed hmmm

(a lot of bachelorette heart events exclusive to the boy version are probably worse, given that the boy version can get downright incomprehensible more often than the girl version, but i’m not going through the hell of restarting the english version of DS for yet another time given that it’s Save File Corruption Speedrunner)

i need to preface this by saying i’m only trying to call this an Interesting and Unfortunate Change but….

one big example that comes to mind is Ain / Kai and his “too touchy-feely?” first heart event….. is not about that in japanese and since it’s not quite equivalent it gets a real sense of unintentional Bad in english

in the japanese version of the event, Ain brings up the fact that he just calls you your name, without the honorific -san. omitting that definitely makes him come off as overfamiliar (whole ass trope about new couples getting flustered over being called their first name with no honorific for the first time), but Ain is Not From Here and overall speaks in the casual, friendly way he’s used to.

he asks you if you’re uncomfortable with him using your name like that

obviously the correct choice is to say you don’t mind at all and everything is fine. BUT if you tell him it’s too much…. he apologizes and tries saying your name with -san… but he realizes he just can’t do it, because “after all, aya is just aya (or whatever your name is). which is kinda weird, but it would require all his normal dialogue lines to be rewritten, so i guess we need to return to the status quo…whatever…

obviously this presents a conundrum in the english version, since honorific speech isn’t used in english the same way it is in japanese. so the event has to be about something slightly different…

the solution natume came up with was to have it be about him patting you on the back

you can probably already see the problem with this but let’s look at it anyway

i mean that’s kinda… odd, but hey, on the bright side, there’s no need for them to return to the status quo so surely he’ll stop if you ask him to..?
