The Last Light

Consumable, legendary

“This magical sphere is twice the size of a human head and is covered in a myriad of small complex runes. It pulses with energy and is warm to the touch. Just being within a few feet of it you can feel the thrum of arcane magics that have been trapped within.”

This magic item has been imbued with a powerful, complex spell and when detonated correctly can cause massive damage if not interrupted.

You must use an action to prepare this magic item and begin to read the enchantment inscribed on the outside of the casing. While reading the enchantment, if you are dealt damage you must make a Constitution saving throw to maintain concentration as if you were concentrating on a spell. If you fail, you must begin again.

At the start of your next turn, choose a target location that you can see within 60 feet. You must continue to read the enchantment to bring the magic item to its full power. You can continue to perform other actions and movements so long as they do not require the use of your hands, and you remain within range of the target location.

On your third turn after preparing this magic item, you can use your action to throw it to the target location, destroying it. All creatures within a 30 foot radius must make a DC 22 Dexterity saving throw, taking 78 (12d12) radiant damage and 78 (12d12) force damage, or half as much on a success. A creature in the area of effect of this magic grenade can take no less than 15 fire damage and 15 radiant damage, regardless of save, resistances, immunities or class features.

Any creature reduced to 0 hit points by this damage is vaporized and can be restored to life only by a true resurrection or a wish spell. Soul Rend. If a creature survives the initial damage of this magic item they must make a DC 22 Constitution saving throw or their maximum hit points are reduced by half for 1d12+3 days.

New photos of Van Morrison in Cambridge, MA 1968 emerge!

Every time I think there's no more discoveries related to Astral Weeks (the album and the book I wrote about it), something comes along to surprise me. This one is a doozy. Below you'll find four photos taken in 1968 featuring Van Morrison, bassist Tom Kielbania, and Janet Planet together, working on music on Green Street in Cambridge, MA. I cannot believe these exist. These were taken by and courtesy of Jim Bourne, the context of which I'll explain in a moment.

Jim Bourne's girlfriend lived on Massachusetts Ave on the 5th floor, and he snapped all of these photos from her place looking down. The trash-strewn patch of grass where they are located was an empty lot across the street from their Green St. apartment. The last photo shows Tom Kielbania sitting on the stoop in front of their place, which is the same exact house three members of the Van Morrison Conspiracy pointed out to me back in 2018. [CORRECTION: SEE BELOW] There is footage of Van Morrison in the 00's on Green St. pointing to a house farther down the street that was shown to me once under circumstances I cannot elaborate on, but I don't think he's correct. It's photographer Jim Bourne's memory that they lived there in that house seen in the photo, too. He also adds, "I parked my car in front of it one night, and the next morning the car was gone. I had it stolen twice (and attempted a third time) while I lived in Cambridge." If you've spent any time in this neighborhood today, you're probably shocked about all of the free floating garbage seen in these photos along with the tales of rampant car theft. These were different times. (Oh and btw, I zoomed in on all that newspaper trash just hoping one of em would be an issue of Avatar; results inconclusive)

Next, let's just take a moment to marvel that this is a photo of Janet Planet doing exactly what she described to me during our interviews for the book.

I think we're looking at a photo of this very process, even including the legendary binder full of songs! Now, maybe you're saying, "How do you even know that's Janet in these photos? You can't even see her face!" Well good news, I asked her today and she confirmed it. "It's definitely us - I remember the blouse I'm wearing very well. It belonged to my mom...this is a fabulous find...Those were the Astral Weeks songs we were working on. I'm gobsmacked over here!"

She continued, "I've always wondered if there were all sorts of people who photographed us here and there and just have the photos somewhere. There are so few from that time." She called the existence of these photos "absolutely miraculous." I agree.

The big takeaways here for me are:

These photos both help confirm the address of where they lived AND muddy the waters. 602-604 is what all the band members believed was the house when we visited in person in 2018, but this photo shows Tom sitting on the steps of 608-610 next door. They look similar, for sure. Sigh. So, we know it's one of these two houses, but this doesn't fully resolve the mystery as I thought it did at first. See below for a current photo of both houses, side by side.

This clearly demonstrates the accuracy of Janet Planet's comments to me about her involvement in the song writing process of Astral Weeks and the other songs he composed while he was living in Boston.

Van just busted out that sax whenever he felt like it.

SUBLIME CINEMA #608 - THE FABULOUS WORLD OF JULES VERNE

Legendary effects wizard Phil Tippett cited this film as a prime inspiration for his finally completed (and amazing) feature stop motion, ‘Mad God’. Karel Zeman was one of the most inventive of all filmmakers, and his work helped to set a standard for stop motion animation from the 50′s onward. Rin paces back and forth the outside of her classroom; a small, red rectangular box in her hands and yellow eyes looking back into the classroom and to the ground, she paced every few seconds.

I’m so nervous, nya. I’m so nervous, nya. I’m so nervous, ahh!

I asked Maki-chan, and Nico-chan, and Honoka-chan, and Kotori-chan, and Nozomi-chan, and Eli-chan, and even Umi-chan! And they all said this would work out but…

Rin stops pacing for a moment to peek inside; and as promised, her best friend, Hanayo was sitting inside, waiting for her.

Rin takes a quick and huge intake of air before sinking to the floor in a squat.

Nyaaaa…

Okay, Okay.

Walk in. Ask Kayo-chin some questions. Play the pocky game. K-k-k-kiss her..!! And…let Kayo-chin know how much I love her again…

Rin gulps audibly. A huge chunk of her nervousness going to her stomach. Not really helping but—

I can do it, nya.

Rin slides the door open and was greeted with that sweet and warm smile from her longest friend and that just makes Rin feel her heart soar with her ever-growing love for her best friend.

“Rin-chan. I’ve been waiting for you.” Hanayo grins a kind smile as Rin robotically approaches.

I can nya it do!

"K-K-K-Kayo-chin~ Do you know what this is, nya?" Rin pops open the box and pulls out the legendary item.

"A pocky stick..?"

Yes! Kayo-chin got it, nya!

Rin nods then lift a finger to her mouth. "Do you know what this is?"

Hanayo blinks once; the short wait making Rin’s heart race even faster. "Your lips..?"

Rin nods more, face heating up rapidly as she fumbles in her pocket. "Do you know...what this is...nya?"

Hanayo adjusts her spectacles as she reads the words on the paper Rin unfolds, her own set of blush dusting her face. "Will you...play the...pocky game...with me...? I...want to kiss...you, Kayo-chin."

She read it out loud!! Nyaaaa~!!

Rin's face was fully red now thanks to Hanayo reading her feelings aloud.

Hanayo smiles shyly and asks softly. "It's a love letter?"

Rin shakes her head as she looked into her girlfriend’s beautiful lilac eyes. "Not really...you already know that I love you."

Hanayo giggles. "That's true."

Kayo-chin is so cute…

Rin folds the paper and places it into her pocket. The pocky stick still held delicately in her left hand.

Hanayo lifts Rin's hand and brings the pocky closer to their faces.

K-Kayo-chin!?

"Shall we?" Hanayo smiles reassuringly at Rin; her gentleness helping Rin to not panic too much.

"Y-Yes, nya!"

Hanayo chuckles at Rin's adorable enthusiasm and pecks Rin's rosy cheek.

Rin flinches and bites down on the pocky biscuit she put in her mouth already. "Ah!! You made me break it! Nya..."

Now we—

Hanayo shakes her head gently with a smile, putting the pocky back in Rin's mouth. "We can still play, silly." And she joins in from her end of the pocky.

Rin blushes harder and bites along, yellow eyes never leaving the gentle guidance of her Kayo-chin's lilac eyes. Till their lips meet and her eyes flutter close naturally.

"Mmm~"

Kayo-chin…lips so soft…nya…

Rin wouldn’t be surprised if she opened her eyes again and the sun has set. As kisses with her Kayo-chin was simply so magical and puts sparkles around her ears and loud thumping in chest and happiness in her veins. She just couldn’t and need not grasp the understanding of time anymore.

Kayo-chin is all she needs.

And the way Hanayo intertwines their fingers as their lips lingered a little longer, ever-soft and firm and loving; Rin knew she found the one. Has the one.
