My name is Ahmed Bakr, a Palestinian. I live in the Gaza Strip. My least wish is to save my wife and children (Neven, Khaled, Joan, Aida, and Musk) from certain death. I write these words and ask for your help. I do not know whether we will be able to survive. This is my last message to you as a human being and the story of my life and my family since the beginning of the war. My son (Khaled) is his age. (8) years old and suffers from enlarged liver diseases, infections, and anemia from contaminated food and water. We are unable to treat him, buy medicine for him, hold a baby no more than two months old, and I am unable to provide her with milk, pampers, or even supplies for small children. My children need food and treatment. We are deprived of the food we love. Our mental health is deteriorating and very destructive, and we need hygiene supplies in the tents. I was displaced from my home from the north to the south, to Khan Yunis, then to Rafah, and then to Nuseirat. I was injured by an occupation sniper while searching for a living for my children. I endured carrying water, searching for wood to light the fire, and bringing food for my children because there was no gas for long distances. Long, all day long, surrounded by devastation, bloody missiles and shattering shrapnel. We endured constant fear day and night for a whole year without any peace or comfort. I do not know where to take my children. Our lives are very painful and difficult, and every time we miraculously escape death, I want to help everyone who can help us, those with compassionate hearts. We live in the heat of tents and under the blazing sun. My house was completely demolished after years of effort and fatigue and building our house. Then, one night and one day, everything disappeared and my children’s room was completely burned and demolished. Even our car was not spared from the bombing, as we had all the wonderful means and tools. For the sake of a decent life, we started roasting our food over the fire despite the fatigue and heat. We are still standing despite the bombing, hunger, and severe shortages. We need your help. At this Save My Children event, we invite you to share our story with your friends and families with clarity and support. Your sensible words and prayers provide strength to endure these difficult circumstances... (Your donation) can make enough difference in our lives. We depend on your support and your standing by our side through this traditional ordeal, boxing, to restore hope and safety to Hayat and her family. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for considering my application. Your support and donation are very important to me and my family

Honestly, Kamala’s family probably helped a lot so them being so emotionally healthy and responsible. The Khan family is so blessedly normal and kind and supportive.
Muneeba loves her daughter and asks the right questions about what’s going on while being wholly unimpressed by both Carol Danvers and Nick Fury. She will also threaten murder if something happens to her daughter. (She’s my favorite.)
Yusuf is such a Dad. He’s out here giving retirement savings advice to a 300 year old Asgardian. They’re on a literal space station surrounded by advance technology and aliens, and he’s concerned that people up there don’t have adequate financial literacy.
Aamir straight-up tells his sister not to die because he doesn’t want to be an only child again. Granted, it’s also a funny commentary about their parents, but it’s also great sibling banter. (Also, we love a guy who calls his wife to say he’s going to be getting home late because he kinda wound up in space by accident. It’s the little things that count.)
And you can’t tell me that Carol wasn’t functionally adopted by the Khans at the end. Muneeba is definitely making the trip to Louisiana from Jersey City a couple times a month to make sure Carol has enough food. Carol also has a standing open invitation to the Khans’ house whenever she’s in the neighborhood. (Monica will too, when she gets back from being away.)
Carol probably also stops by periodically with Goose to visit the Khans and the Flerkens they adopted. They probably wound up with at least eight. (They’re good home security.) It becomes a running gag that anyone who drops by when she’s there is flabbergasted by what’s going on. (Carol is simultaneously getting great life advice from Yusuf and getting cooking instructions from Muneeba while Aamir and Kamala are including her in normal sibling banter.)
The Marvels trio consists of an amnesiac woman with PTSD, an overworked astronaut with major emotional trauma and a sixteen-year-old forced to confront the horrors of war when she should be fighting low-level crime at most. How the FUCK are they the most emotionally healthy and responsible team in the MCU.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
I unfortunately cannot safely donate because my genocide supporting dad, who heavily monitors my purchase history, is now further restricting my money and threatening to cut access to my bank account due to the donations I made to Palestinian families, but for those who can afford to donate, I have attached the link to Ahmed and his family's GoFundMe here: https://gofund.me/1d3a37c4

Last Boat Out of Shanghai: The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Fled Mao's Revolution by Helen Zia
Shanghai has historically been China's jewel, its richest, most modern and westernized city. The bustling metropolis was home to sophisticated intellectuals, entrepreneurs, and a thriving middle class when Mao's proletarian revolution emerged victorious from the long civil war. Terrified of the horrors the Communists would wreak upon their lives, citizens of Shanghai who could afford to fled in every direction. Seventy years later, members of the last generation to fully recall this massive exodus have revealed their stories to Chinese American journalist Helen Zia, who interviewed hundreds of exiles about their journey through one of the most tumultuous events of the twentieth century. From these moving accounts, Zia weaves together the stories of four young Shanghai residents who wrestled with the decision to abandon everything for an uncertain life as refugees in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United States. Benny, who as a teenager became the unwilling heir to his father's dark wartime legacy, must decide either to escape to Hong Kong or navigate the intricacies of a newly Communist China. The resolute Annuo, forced to flee her home with her father, a defeated Nationalist official, becomes an unwelcome exile in Taiwan. The financially strapped Ho fights deportation from the U.S. in order to continue his studies while his family struggles at home. And Bing, given away by her poor parents, faces the prospect of a new life among strangers in America. The lives of these men and women are marvelously portrayed, revealing the dignity and triumph of personal survival.
The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui
This illustrated memoir is about the search for a better future and a longing for the past. Exploring the anguish of immigration and the lasting effects that displacement has on a child and her family, Bui documents the story of her family’s daring escape after the fall of South Vietnam in the 1970s, and the difficulties they faced building new lives for themselves. At the heart of Bui’s story is a universal struggle: While adjusting to life as a first-time mother, she ultimately discovers what it means to be a parent—the endless sacrifices, the unnoticed gestures, and the depths of unspoken love. Despite how impossible it seems to take on the simultaneous roles of both parent and child, Bui pushes through.
Daring to Drive: A Saudi Woman's Awakening by Manal Al-Sharif
A ferociously intimate memoir by a devout woman from a modest family in Saudi Arabia who became the unexpected leader of a courageous movement to support women’s right to drive. Manal al-Sharif grew up in Mecca the second daughter of a taxi driver, born the year fundamentalism took hold. In her adolescence, she was a religious radical, melting her brother’s boy band cassettes in the oven because music was haram: forbidden by Islamic law. But what a difference an education can make. By her twenties she was a computer security engineer, one of few women working in a desert compound that resembled suburban America. That’s when the Saudi kingdom’s contradictions became too much to bear: she was labeled a slut for chatting with male colleagues, her teenage brother chaperoned her on a business trip, and while she kept a car in her garage, she was forbidden from driving down city streets behind the wheel.
An American Family: A Memoir of Hope and Sacrifice by Khizr Khan
An American Family is an intensely personal story about the nature of true patriotism and what it's like to risk everything you know for the promise of a 226-year-old piece of parchment. As Khizr Khan traces his remarkable journey--from humble beginnings on a poultry farm in Pakistan to obtaining a degree from Harvard Law School and raising a family in America--he shows what it means to leave the limitations of one's country behind for the best values and promises of another. He also tells the story of the Khans' middle child, U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan, who was killed while protecting his base camp in Iraq, and the ways in which their undying pride in him and his sacrifice have helped them endure the deepest despair a parent can know. The book is a stark depiction of what an American looks like, what being a nation of immigrants really means, and what it is to live-rather than simply to pay lip service to-our ideals.

Florida: Swap Shop Allows Terror Tied Muslims to Operate ICNA Dawah Booth in Ft. Lauderdale
Ibrahim Dremali: Pro Terror Imam Claims 'Muslims Love Jesus" Spearheads ICNA Dawah Effort Aimed At Christians
Swap Shop Allows Terror Tied Muslims To Operate ICNA Dawah Booth On Their Premises In Ft. Lauderdale
March 4, 2021
Exploiting Jesus to Convert Vulnerable Christians to Radical Islam
ICNA and terror-related imam set up booth to missionize to flea market goers.
Thu Mar 4, 2021
Joe Kaufman
The Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop is a well-known 'hot spot' for South Florida bargain hunters seeking out the latest flea market deals and moviegoers heading to watch the latest drive-in flics with their families. It once featured free concerts of famous bands and a circus with elephants, clowns and acrobats. It was where Jeb Bush announced his run for Governor, well over two decades ago. Now, once every two weeks, the famed Swap Shop features extreme Muslims seeking to convert the vulnerable to radical Islam, and they are doing it in the name of Jesus, literally. The dangerous nature of this offensive endeavor must be exposed and condemned.
WhyIslam is the dawah (religious outreach) division of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), the US arm of South Asian Islamist group Jamaat-e-Islami (JI). As such, WhyIslam and ICNA have sizable links with overseas terror. Appearing on a 2008 video promoting WhyIslam was Mazen Mokhtar, a former admin for the now-defunct al-Qaeda recruitment site, qoqaz.net, and a champion of Hamas and suicide bombings. Since September 1989, ICNA has been associated with Ashrafuz Zaman Khan, a former JI death squad leader who was sentenced to death, in absentia, for multiple murders, and who has held a number of top ICNA positions.
Up until recently, WhyIslam featured a message board on its website. A number of the forum moderators used it to post messages in favor of Hamas, Hezbollah, the vilification of Jews, and the destruction of Israel. One, BrJimC, wrote, "I don't think Hamas has a reason to not want to destroy Israel…" and "Those Jews that speak out against such atrocity by holding their public officials accountable are the ones who deserve peace and life… The rest will one day wind up in the Mediterranean Sea." Another moderator, MARWAN, wrote, "I support Hezbollah as long as they stand by justice" and "Nazi restaurant… I wonder if they have kosher meals."
This past December, the South Florida Muslim Federation (SoFlo Muslims), an umbrella group for South Florida's many radical Muslim entities, along with WhyIslam opened up a booth at the Swap Shop targeting members of the Christian community. It included a canopy hovering over a table, on top of which were free copies of the Quran to be given away. Attached to one side of the canopy was a huge WhyIslam banner that read, "I [heart] JESUS." The sign was meant to disarm Christians and make them believe they were in friendly territory. While the group may purport to have an affinity for Jesus, regarding them as friends would be a grave error.
Accompanying WhyIslam was Texas-based imam, Ibrahim Dremali, who had previously been a fixture in the South Florida Muslim community and later would be added to the federal 'no fly' list. In 2000, Dremali partook in an event in Miami, where Israeli flags were burned and event goers shouted for "Zionist blood." In 2001, when his Boca mosque was criticized for publishing a violent essay on its website labeling Jews "enemies" and stating that Muslims will "fight the Jews and kill them," Dremali lied and said it was the result of "hackers." And in 2002, he was a character witness at a hearing for soon-to-be-convicted al-Qaeda operative Adham Hassoun.
Dremali has also been involved with ICNA, in the past. From March 2000 to September 2001, Dremali was listed as one of eight local contacts for ICNA-SE, ICNA's southeast regional division, on the same web page as links to the official sites of Hamas, Hezbollah and the Taliban. The page also solicited funds for al-Qaeda's qoqaz.net (mentioned previously). The webmaster for the ICNA-SE site was Syed Khawer Ahmad, a co-founder of Dremali's Boca mosque and who was, at the time, a website designer for Hamas in Gaza.
The Muslim Federation, which has as one of its members a mosque, Masjid Jamaat Al Mumineen (MJAM), that propagates material on its website which repeatedly curses Jews and Christians, has branded its Swap Shop project participants, the 'SoFlo-WhyIslam Dawah Team.' It claims the booth will run once every two weeks, and according to the Federation, the team is "growing."
The Federation has posted photos on its website and social media of the Dawah Team in action. One photo taken from the team's booth depicts a serious-looking Dremali wearing a Palestinian kaffiyeh-patterned COVID mask, hunched over, while 'in the face' of a disabled man in a mobility scooter. Another photo, taken in January, included a second WhyIslam banner, which stated, "ISLAM: The way of life [of] Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Mohammad."
For years, ICNA has been spreading a similar message via buses and billboards. However the message is offensive to many within the Jewish and Christian faiths as well as misleading, because it implies that the most revered figures in Judaism and Christianity were practicing Muslims and are solely part of Islam. This, even though the religion of Islam came into existence long after the others. In 2009, when the Islamist group CAIR paid for the identical message to be placed on Broward County, Florida buses – something that this author led a demonstration against – even the liberal Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel said the message was incendiary.
Now, twelve years later, ICNA and the South Florida Muslim Federation are, once again, co-opting Jewish and Christian icons of the past, while getting into the faces of non-Muslims, to push the same pseudo-theological drivel, what amounts to nothing more than a repulsive lie. But then, what can you expect from Islamist organizations that associate with and promote bigotry and terror? Shame on those who ignore the threat coming from these dangerous groups practicing religious theft and cultural appropriation, and shame on the Swap Shop for allowing such abuse to be placed upon its vulnerable patrons!
Action: If you wish to contact the Swap Shop to provide an opinion on this matter, you can do so by calling 954-791-7927. Please be respectful in any and all communications.

Amal Ashour her husband and Maryam, their baby
About them
Hello, I am Amal Ashour. I live in Gaza. I am 26 years old Before the war, I was studying for a master’s degree at the university, specializing in French language.I am married and have a daughter. I named her Maryam. She is now one year and 3 months old.
This means that before the 7th of October 2023, she was 9 months old. The best age for children to play and understand. Suddenly, the war came and destroyed everything. We fled from our house after the army called us and asked us to evacuate the house. Indeed, we left for the southern sector.
We did not find a place to live until we called one of our friends and they told us that we could live with them in a room in their house. Indeed, we sat for nearly three months, and because of embarrassment, we left them so that we could live in a tent in Rafah. Indeed, from January 1, 2024 until now, May 8, 2024, we are in Rafah. In a tent that is not suitable for living, not even for a week, but the fear of the bombing and destruction that we saw forced us to live in such harsh conditions. After all this abuse and all this patience and endurance, we received leaflets from Israeli army planes telling us that we must evacuate from Rafah and that we are forbidden from returning to our homes on the grounds that it is a dangerous war zone... Where do we go? We have no place left to go.
At this stage, my husband and I decided to go to you and create an account on the Go Fund Me website and ask you to help us in these difficult times, until we leave Gaza, from the land of war to the land of peace. All we need from you is for you to support us and help us to get out. From the war, even if you cannot help, you must spread this campaign everywhere and among your friends. We thank you for your stance and support for us. Thank you, my friends.

Nada Saftawi and her three children: Hala, Reema, and Zuhdi
About them:
My name is Nada Saftawi, a dedicated teacher, artist, and proud Palestinian mother of three beautiful children: Hala, Reema, and Zuhdi. I used to live in the heart of Gaza, in the serene Reema neighborhood, known for its elegance and cherished by its residents. Our lives were full of dreams and ambitions, especially after I completed my master's degree. My daughter Hala, who shares my zest for life, and I often dreamed of achieving great things together. Reema, with her brilliant mind and love for physics and English, was destined to be a scientist. And my mischievous son Zuhdi, who holds my heart, was my constant source of joy.
But on the morning of October 7th, our world was turned upside down. Our dreams were shattered as the news of war and destruction in Gaza spread across the globe. The Rimal neighborhood, once a haven, became a target of relentless bombing. We were forced to flee our home, clutching onto each other as we sought refuge. We found temporary shelter at Al-Shifa Hospital, but soon even that sanctuary was compromised. The hospital became a place of chaos and danger, forcing us to flee once more.
With no other options, we joined countless others, making the arduous journey on foot to southern Gaza, walking nearly 10 kilometers to reach Khaldiya School in Khan Younis. Our path was fraught with terror as we faced Israeli military checkpoints, their guns pointed at us, our hearts pounding with fear. We clung to each other, trying to protect my children from the terrifying reality around us.
There, we found temporary shelter, and I volunteered to help other displaced families, trying to bring a bit of hope and smiles to the children, including my own. But even Khan Younis was not safe. The bombing followed us, and we were forced to flee again, this time to Rafah, where we huddled in tents, exposed to the elements, and struggling to survive.
In Rafah, we faced hunger and desperation, competing with animals for scraps of food. Just as we thought it couldn’t get worse, Rafah too came under attack. We had no choice but to move again, now finding ourselves in Al-Mawasi, living under the scorching sun in makeshift tents, praying for mercy and a way out. Tragically, my son Zuhdi contracted hepatitis from the contaminated water, adding to our unimaginable suffering.
I have started this campaign out of sheer desperation, hoping to escape this relentless cycle of war and start anew in Egypt. The cost of evacuating through the Rafah border is exorbitant—$5,000 per adult and $2,500 per child. I can barely provide for my children’s daily needs, let alone afford such a staggering sum. This is why I am reaching out to the world, to the kind-hearted people who can help us find safety and a chance to rebuild our lives.
Attached are photos of my children and some of my artworks. Your generosity could give us the chance to live in peace, to dream again, and to start over. Please, help us escape the horrors of war and find a new beginning.

Amani & Eman Alhallaq
+ younger siblings and nieces and nephews
About them
I am Amani, and as you know, my sister Eman and I are currently living in the besieged Gaza Strip. We are the only ones left from our family. We live with our children in a tent, experiencing the worst living conditions. We are still suffering and struggling to provide water, food, and other necessities. Basic living conditions are not available, and we are living in extremely difficult circumstances.
Our homes have been completely destroyed, and our future shattered. We no longer have a house or anything we own. We have been displaced four times, facing exhaustion and severe illness, including gastroenteritis, high fever, cough, and amoebiasis due to contaminated water and malnutrition. Despite our efforts, we struggled to find the necessary medicine. Here we are now in the Mawasi Khan Younis area, where the intense ongoing bombardment continues.
My brother created this donation link to help us reach safety and save our lives and our children’s lives. Here in Gaza, we find nothing, and the truth is we are fighting to survive. We appeal to the entire world to move to a safe place where we can rebuild our lives in peace. Travel costs are high, but it is the best solution.

About them
We live in very difficult conditions here, especially after entering Rafah. There is no safe place to go. We now live in a tent west of the city of Rafah, where insects, garbage, and epidemics spread due to the lack of necessary treatments and clean drinking water. We were all infected with hepatitis and it was very difficult. In addition to that, the very high temperature here in the tent, the bombing and destruction everywhere, we live in terror here.
Our future and education have been destroyed, neither schools nor universities.
Amon was supposed to have finished high school this year, and then I would go to university and fulfill the dream of years, but unfortunately everything was destroyed. Our homes, our memories, and our childhood were destroyed.
My uncle set up a fundraising link for us to help evacuate us to safety.

100 episodes of Supergirl. And let me tell you it was a doozy.
Well that was an episode and then some. I haven't had a rewatch yet, so no doubt will pick up on some things once I do, but for now here are more immediate thoughts.
The first thing that struck me - it's now canon that Kara and Lena's destinies are intertwined. Who they become, who they were to who they are, whether or not they survive, hell, even whether or not those around them survive, depends on the other person. No-one else has the same impact in their life. Argue all you want, but that sure as hell is a definition of soulmates to me, platonic or otherwise.
If anyone of you are like me, and old enough to have been Xena fans, let me tell you this is so reminiscent of the “When Fates Collide” episode from season 6, which showed that in any alternate universe, Xena and Gabrielle still find each other. That it always comes back to the two of them. Fast forward some 18 years, and this parallels that message. Fate or destiny, call it what you will, but Lena and Kara's lives are intricately linked. I know a few other SG fans are Xena fans, and we've discussed the similarities between Kara/Lena v Xena/Gabrielle numerous times. This is another for that growing list.
So other than that, here are my immediate takeaways from it all.
Mon-El. Now he is a divisive character, and one I honestly have had a lot of issues with. However, this episode I felt showed the better side of him.
I also watched with widening eyes as Kara went to her ex-boyfriend for no reason other than to ask him about Lena! Seriously telling moment for me. I was also pleased Mon-El made the point that he and Lena both came from abusive childhoods and families. At last, the point of Lena having reacted in part like she has is because of abuse, as mentioned. Only the other day I said I was frustrated how Mon-El was forgiven for his actions because of his upbringing, but Lena wasn't afforded the same. It wasn't much, but it was a start. I will add, abuse or not - Lena still is accountable for her own actions (more on that later), just as Mon-El was.
The other thing. Winn has already said to "Give Lena time." Mon-El mirrored that line. Brainy believes in Lena. All three are from the future. Plus, the whole reason Mon-El can even be there? Because L-Corp develops a cure for the Daxamite lead allergy. Not LexCorp. Not Luthor Corp. L-Corp. Now I know that Supergirl and continuity are really poor at times, but I truly hope this is another nod that LexCorp is defeated, and Lena takes control of L-Corp once again, and she does good things, that lead L-Corp into being the cause for good she has always wanted it to be.
Onto Dark Lena. I'd already said to hubby that I wouldn't be surprised if in one of those timelines they didn't show an evil Lena. After all, we've had Kara gone bad now a few times in various scenarios. We even have had a bad Alex (S1, mind controlled anyone? Hmm. Mind controlled Alex. Oh wonder where we've heard that before? Yep, Alex this season. No idea if that is relevant in future episodes if Alex and Lena actually ever have a damn conversation, but it should be, whereby Alex can tell Lena just how mind controlling anyone, regardless of intent is a huge, bad thing, because of her own experiences with it).
So evil Lena was so good. It was pretty obvious to me, once they said that Lena had been injured, then disappeared and came back 2 years later changed, that Lillian/Cadmus had her. Lo and behold, Lillian had kidnapped her, and Lena version of Metallo was born. Even faced with that, when Kara refused to fight Lena, for that split second you could see the flicker in Lena's facial reaction. That split second moment of doubt. Honestly one of the things that I love so much with Supergirl is that they often have these nuanced moments throughout the seasons. Put those moments in the hands of Melissa and/or Katie and they're elevated to another level.
So only the other day on a different post I wrote this: 'Also, in reference to that S2 episode, (note - also ep 13), as Mxy disappears, he says that all he ever wanted was to have someone to love him, but Kara says that "love can't be forced on anybody; it needs to come on its own."'
Then we get the line in this episode of: “You were right what you said. You can’t force magic. It must be found.” Okayyyy then. Wow. Parallels again.
So talking of nuanced moments, let's talk about that ending. Although, before we delve into that I just want to talk about it a moment before Kara lands on Lena's balcony.
Did Kara actually watch that tape?
I find it strange it was left and I believe it wasn’t left by accident. Why else pick it up, and show that title so clearly? Why have that scene in at all unless it has relevance?
Is that why she decided she needed to take the stance she did?
I personally believe this was why it played out like it has. Kara saw something in that tape to take this route.
So the last scene. Again, watch the nuances of expression on Lena’s face as Kara speaks.
From the shock when Kara says “not this time.” to the way she frowned at the last line. Which isn’t calling Lena a villain by the way. For goodness sake please don't misrepresent exactly what was said. Kara is saying *if* Lena becomes a villain.
But there is far more here for me.
Lena knows Kara's true identity. Kara is trusting her with that knowledge even now, and especially with Lex in the picture. We know from the earlier timelines explored that by Kara openly showing who she is to the World, it causes all those around her to be targeted and killed. That is the trust Kara is showing and Lena almost certainly knows it, even without knowing that timeline alternative, and even if she doesn’t want to admit it yet.
A best friend isn't someone who always agrees with you and tells you that you're right.
A best friend is someone that helps you be the best version you can be, reminding you what your values are and what is important. They hold you accountable when you mess up, and support you when you need help. That is exactly what Kara did. She was telling Lena she would be the for her, but she would also hunt her down if she became a Villain.
We also have to remember numerous times, Lena has stated she is not a Villain. And she isn't. Not yet. She is misguided, making some terrible decisions, but ultimately Lena also stated just ahead of when she jumped off the cliff that 'Supergirl will save me.'
Now Lena knows, Kara will save her. But the boundary lines have been set by Kara (who by the way, I still think could never fight back against Lena. Not fully, because she wouldn't even when Evil Lena was killing her. She saw that flicker in the eyes just as I did).
Kara has firmly placed it all into Lena's court. Lena has to make the decision, to meet Kara half way and that Kara shouldn't have the burden placed entirely on her, and they shoulder it together. To realise her mistakes. We know Lena is craving friendship as much as she denies it. Remember this with Hope in 5.08, The Wrath of Rama Khan, and the nuanced reaction Lena gave there as the reality set in?
L: "You're the only friend I can count on."
H: "But, Ms. Luthor, I'm not your friend. I'm something you created to serve a purpose."
Ouch. That one hurt.
This whole end scene is more powerful and pivotal than perhaps realised.
Overall, I loved the episode. I truly did.
I just wish there wasn't another small break between this and episode 14, which isn't until March 8th. Damn all these breaks so close together! It would be so much nicer to be able to watch them without all these interruptions.

A lot of people on here joke about Alexander being “crazy” or “insane”, and I know some people hold the belief that he was an insane monster (I even saw an article titled “Alexander the Monster” which basically made Alexander out to be worse than the devil lol). I was just wondering what you think regarding Alexander’s mentality/sanity and why do you think some people believe that he was this crazy psychopath. Btw, I just finished reading Becoming and I loved it!!!!
First, thank you! I’m glad you liked the novel! Now, on to the question…
When people talk about “crazy” Alexander, it usually falls into two different categories. One subset is that Alexander went crazy with grief after Hephaistion died; I’ve argued against this elsewhere, so won’t again here in any detail.
Another subset claims he became megalomaniacal, pointing for proof to his “Persianizing,” including an attempt to introduce proskynesis (the bow before the Persian Great King that Greeks viewed as due only to gods), his desire to be deified, and a penchant for dressing up as various gods (Dionysos, Herakles, and even Artemis).
That tendency isn’t just on Tumblr; similar accusations are made in academia under the maxim that, “Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” (Lord Baron Acton)
Yet that’s the cynical take. I think how one views the world (and human nature) has something to do with how one interprets Alexander’s behavior. We must recall that Alexander lived in a society where kingship was seen as divinely bestowed, and carried with it certain religious obligations with regard to one’s subjects.
Remember, not just anybody could be king of Macedon; one had to be an ARGEAD: e.g., from a specific family (gens). They were descendants of Herakles, and so of divine descent. This is different from the Successors who followed. Alexander was raised as a prince; Ptolemy, Antigonos, or Seleukos were not. The importance of these heroic ties can be found in the stories that popped up later, making Ptolemy a bastard of Philip (and thus an Argead), or the later Seleucid claim of descent from Apollo. And we know the Molossian royal house claimed descent from Achilles.
Again, not just anybody can be a king. One has to be special by ancestry.
Being born to the purple doesn’t necessarily make one any less of a dick. We’ve plenty of evidence to the contrary. (Demetrios Poliorketes? Pyrrhos? Antigonos IV Epiphanes?) But it does instill a different awareness of one’s place in the world.
Modern cynicism forgets just how seriously ancient people took religion. On his deathbed, among the last actions Alexander forced himself to perform until he literally couldn’t get up, were morning sacrifices to the ancestors and gods, on behalf of the Macedonian people. I think that says a lot not only about his own religiosity, but his sense of himself as a conduit between his people and the gods. The proper performance of religious rites were central, not just to his success, but to the survival of Macedonia. In our modern world, it can be hard to connect to this somewhat archaic notion.
In addition, the stories of him visiting hospital tents after battle, personally writing letters to his officers, talking and joking with his soldiers, marching with them, eating what they ate, and dressing as they dressed, all point to somebody who understands the principles of leadership, as opposed to just bossing people around. Some have argued that he lost that as time went on, but he was still out marching with them in Gedrosia (despite a collapsed or partially collapsed lung), so I’d argue he did not. The helmet incident (where he poured out precious water brought to him, because the rest of his men didn’t have any) is an exemplar of his continued understanding of what solidarity meant. It may have been as calculated as hell, but that’s not the act of a madman or megalomaniac. Also, just because it was calculated doesn’t mean it wasn’t genuinely meant. He was trying to keep his men alive, not let them give up.
Did Alexander, over time, turn into an arrogant little shit? Almost certainly, given his mind-boggling achievements, and the fact the Greeks never touted humility as a virtue. But I don’t believe he was a narcissist or had taken leave of reality. Such characterizations are simplistic, played for pop approval and laughs, or because it’s too much effort to look under the surface.
I do think he was struggling desperately to figure out how to govern such a vast, international empire, and not in some Tarn-esque “Brotherhood of Mankind” way. He never (personally) lost a battle, but uniting Eastern and Western ways of rule was a puzzle he never solved. THAT was his great failure. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, “Show me a hero and I’ll write you a tragedy.” And that’s where Dancing with the Lion will eventually head. Alexander’s story is, ultimately, not a triumph, but not because he was crazy or a Macedonian Hitler.
I’d also point out that people who oversimplify Alexander as either a demon or demented, are buying, hook, line and sinker, the moral narratives of the ancient authors, especially of Plutarch, Curtius, and Justin, but also Arrian and Diodoros. These are not neutral accounts. We must be careful of their biases.
All that said, I don’t want to excuse Alexander’s war crimes (and I don’t know what else you’d call some of what he did). But even those were not the actions of a “crazy” man. They were brutal, but considered (which may be worse).
Razing Thebes sent a message of what happens when a city foreswears an alliance multiple times. Rounding up and killing Greek mercenaries after Granikos sent a message to others serving under Darius (an attempt to peel off some of Darius’s more dangerous support troops). Razing Tyre (and Gaza) sent a message about what happens when resistance defies certain “rules of war” (Tyre’s treatment of the heralds). The burning of Persepolis was not a drunken frat party gone wrong; it was a political statement. Note ALL moveable wealth was gone and it happened just before they left, plus it destroyed the place where Persian kings were crowned, preventing one from emerging in Alexander’s wake. (Not that Bessus cared, nor Spitamenes after him). Philotas fell victim to a real conspiracy (even if he wasn’t part of it), not a CIA file (contra Badian), and the Proskynesis Affair was an attempt to regularize court procedure not institute worship of Alexander. The murder of Kleitos was, indeed, a drunken brawl, with no good excuse, but was followed by (I think) genuine remorse, even if he accepted the forgiveness of the troops because he needed to.
Even the choice to enter Gedrosia wasn’t the decision of a madman, but of one whose logistics were legendary for working…except when they didn’t, because of an uprising and monsoon behind them that was unplanned for. It was a FUBAH, not a foolish choice. He was looking for a trade route linking India and Mesopotamia. Notions that he just wanted to one-up Cyrus and Semiramis misses the point.
The so-called request to the Greek states for deification is problematic as to just what he asked, versus what was later said (remember, we’re hearing about it from Athenian demagogues who hated him). The claim to be the son of a god was not megalomania or a shot at divinity, but an affirmation of hero status; being the son of a god didn’t necessarily mean one was immortal one’s self. As for precedent, his own father had put a statue of himself alongside the 12 in his final parade, plus there’s a heroōn (hero shrine) built above Royal Tomb I at Vergina. That’s either Philip buried there (my own personal opinion), or his father Amyntas III. The Spartan general, Brasidas, received hero cult from Amphipolis after his death, but Lysander accepted it from the Samians will still alive.
Alexander outstripped every one of these by no small measure, and seen in context, his claim to be a son of Zeus-Ammon is not some bizarre, out-of-left-field assertion. If Lysander was a hero, and his father Philip, then what did that make Alexander? And the inflated “Final Plans” were about 50% invented by Perdikkas to get the army to vote them down.
Alexander did terrible things and we need to let those terrible things stand—call them out and recognize them. Yet when I look at his behavior, even in his latter years, I just don’t see the horrific corruption of, say, the Trump administration, or of Vladimir Putin’s Russia, or Xi’s China. At some level, I think Alexander still saw himself, and struggled to be, a “Philosopher King.” He just didn’t know what that meant anymore.
I think, by the end, he was lost. Macedonian kings were expected to win wars and provide loot. Alexander did that to a degree no Macedonian monarch had ever before achieved. He was the Energizer Bunny of Macedonian kings. His own men (and culture) had created a monster. No wonder he felt betrayed by their “indiscipline” on the banks of the Hyphasis. “But I gave you even more than you ever dreamed of!”
Indeed, he did. That was the problem. They made him turn around. When his army “defeated” him, he wasn’t sure who he was any more, or what he was doing. I see a lot of his career after as a scramble to re-define himself. He’d conquered all this territory at a relatively young age. Now what was he supposed to do with it? Ruling is a lot less glamorous than conquering.
He’s perhaps the greatest military mind who’s ever lived (tied with Subutai, Genghis Khan’s general). He was also an exceptionally inspirational leader. But that “ruling schtick”? It got in the way. Appointing Hephaistion chiliarch was among his smarter decisions, even if Hephaistion died on him too soon. It was tacit recognition that he needed help. I’ve joked that Hephaistion’s appointment amounted to, “Here, you figure out how to make this whole thing work; I want to go conquer more stuff.”
Once he lost Hephaistion, he became a boat without a rudder. But as noted, his mourning was not beyond the pale. The only difference is that he had the money (and authority) to impose his wishes. As a former bereavement counselor, I wrote an article called “The Mourning of Alexander the Great” that deep-sixes misconceptions about mourning and Alexander’s behavior.
Was he “crazy”? No. Was he the devil? I’m sure the countries he invaded thought so. Was he a megalomaniac? Almost certainly not. Was he an arrogant asshole (especially when he’d been drinking)? Almost certainly so. But his arrogance sprang from an odd mix of massive, early success mixed with deep insecurity spawned by his upbringing.
I find him fascinating precisely because he’s not a simple read. He’s not Donald Trump. He’s not Adolf Hitler. He’s not even Caesar, or Napoleon. He’s intensely complex, which is, I think, the source of his continued fascination.
I’d advise those who read about him to allow for that complexity. Avoid simplistic readings, even while not white-washing the really ugly side of his career.

I want to talk to you a moment about fear.
I wrote this a couple of weeks ago, and then just as I was about to publish it we had a slew of mass shootings, including one in my own geographical back yard, at a festival I've attended with my family. It seems to me that being afraid of gun violence is the one exception to my entire essay, and it does poke a big hole in it. We can't be afraid to close that hole. So here is that essay. +++++++++++++++++++++ I have said for a very long time now that the only useful place for fear in on Rollercoasters. Maybe horror movies. That it. Nothing else. But I want to dig deeper on that theme for a moment, if you don’t mind.
For getting on close to 2 decades now, there has been a political party in this country that has wanted you to be afraid. Usually it’s to be afraid of Muslims, terrorists, foreigner… anything other. They want you to believe that crime is getting worse. They want you to believe the country is financially unstable. They want you to believe there is a gay agenda that will change your life for the worse. A Trans-gender agenda. An Atheist agenda. A war on Christmas. Fear of packages in the mail. Fear of people in black communities, with their high crime rates. Fear of immigrants and the crime they bring. Fear of cartels and gangs that don’t even have a presence in this country. Fear of the Deficit. Fear that higher taxes will kill the economy. Fear that Iran is building an atomic bomb. Fear that the government will take over your healthcare. Fear that the government will take your guns. Fear that the government will take your freedoms.
This really ramped up after 9/11. I won’t kid you, that was awful. Grotesque. I can remember every damned moment of it – feeling genuinely in shock but being brave for my children, who were frightened out of their wits. Grabbing my children from their schools. Picking up my wife from her teaching job and the protocols that say that teachers needs to stay at their posts can go fuck themselves. Hunkering down and wishing it were all over. Thinking about the flight originally bound by my adopted hometown, and our own skyscrapers. It was awful and it opened a horrific wound.
Thing is, when do we get to heal? Why do we need to stay afraid? How can we possibly heal if we’re still afraid?
I’m asking that all of you please, stop being afraid. We’re not the greatest country in the world anymore but we sure used to be. We dreamed big, accomplished even bigger, and created the world’s next great adventures. We don’t do that anymore.
Fear is holding us back. Fear of the other. Fear of the world and how different it is from us. Yeah, we got hurt, badly hurt, but it’s time to heal. It’s time to stop being afraid to heal. It’s not easy, and I don’t deny that. But let me offer you a few notions about fear that maybe you haven’t considered.
I’m not afraid of Muslims. They’ve been part of this country going back to its very foundation. There are more Muslims in the world than there are Americans and there always has been. 9/11 didn’t change that. We’ve been fine with Muslims. Sharia Law isn’t being introduced anywhere in this country. It’s just not. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying, and wants you afraid. If Muslims were such a big problem why are we as a nation so damned friendly with Saudi Arabia? Senegal? Pakistan? Morocco? Singapore? Egypt? Kuwait? Morocco – the first country to recognize the United States as an independent country (1786), and with whom we maintain the longest single treaty in US History?
A Muslim named Fazlur Tahman Khan (an American) invented the engineering system that allows skyscrapers to be built, including the Twin Towers, Sears Tower in Chicago and even the Trump International Hotel and Tower in the same city. He also built the Metrodome. A Muslim named Ernest Hamwi invented the Ice Cream Cone at the 1904 World’s Fair (Martha Stewart has published his original recipe too).
I’m not afraid of terrorists. I actually know someone who died on 9/11 and I completely understand the anger, the fear. I’ve felt it. It’s a physical thing you can feel and touch. But you know what? The country seems to have learned its lesson about how to anticipate this sort of thing. I’d like to think we can relax now. There are people whose jobs are to be vigilant and they’ve been successful since that awful day 2 decades ago. I think we can relax. And if I’m wrong? What’s the point of dying scared? Laugh at death – it’s going to laugh back. Don’t take life so seriously, it was never meant to be permanent.
I prefer to think of them simply as criminals. In addition to not being afraid, don’t make them important.
I’m not afraid of foreigners. I want to see the world, and see the differences and the similarities in other cultures. I want them to be our partners on this pale blue dot. Being afraid of the rest of the world seems just so… lonely. We’re not built for lonely. You’re here, reading this right now, aren’t you? Lonely makes people into monsters thanks to the echo chamber that is our own brains and we must be better than that.
I’m not afraid of crime. Despite all the crime shows on television, cable and podcast crime is actually way down, and is trending down. Even the FBI says so. I’m not afraid of the country being financially unstable. Yes, we have good days and bad days but overall the country is still the largest economy on the planet and will continue to be for a long time unless we intentionally intervene to make it worse. We have safety nets we didn’t use to have. Social Security isn’t going broke. Nowhere close. We have plenty of money. It does, however, need a slight adjustment in who is holding on to it.
I’m not afraid of gays. For the most part, every gay person, every Trans person I have ever met has wanted only one thing – for everyone else to not care that they’re gay or trans. Or anywhere else on the non-binary spectrum. It doesn’t affect you in any way whatsoever. The LGBTQA agenda in schools? Mostly it teaches that it doesn’t matter. Can you stop being afraid of this? Yeah, some religions say that this is a sin but can you stop being afraid of it long enough to take to heart one great lesson in that book of yours? Even if you believe it’s a sin, you love the sinner. That’s it. Stop there. Never, never, never add hate to that. “Love the sinner, Hate the sin” isn’t in the Bible, the Koran or the Torah. Anything further isn’t religion – it’s justifying what you’re afraid of; most likely yourself.
(As a side note, for those of you who use the Bible to justify your fears of these people, I find it hilarious that you keep using the parts of the Bible written by the Romans after they co-opted Christianity. But who am I to judge?)
I’m not afraid of Atheists for the same reason. You know what they want? For everyone else to not push their own agenda on them, just like you don’t want someone else’s agenda forced on you. The Constitution is quite clear on this – no religion will be established by the state. Atheists would like you to support this very American ideal. That’s it.
There is no war on Christmas. There simply isn’t. Atheists exchange gifts too, because it’s nice to do.
I’m not afraid of packages in the mail. Yeah, there was some scary stuff sent out just after 9/11, but the number of people who got those packages/envelopes can be counted on one hand, and it isn’t your hand.
I’m not afraid of black neighborhoods. Crime really isn’t any higher in black neighborhoods than it is in white ones, not when the economics are taken into account. When people have money crime goes down, regardless of the color of one’s skin. Go to any white community where they income levels and cost of living are the same as any similar black neighborhood and you’ll find that the crime rates are just about equal. But the people trying to keep you afraid are white, and black is part of “the other”. There are good people living in those neighborhoods. Kind people. People who would help you.
Stop calling the police on black people. Stop being afraid. Be kind.
I‘m not afraid of immigrants or any crime. Yes, a couple of stories have been sensationalized, but statistically immigrants cause less crime than those of us born here. I’m not afraid of them taking our jobs. If the jobs are there and you want them, apply for them. Those jobs they’re taking are jobs you didn’t want, and they’re there. Immigrants tend to work hard, because they want what we used to be, and what they believe we can still be.
Fear of foreign gangs? Seriously? This might surprise you but MS13 members haven’t been making it across the border. You don’t find them in our detention camps. That’s because they’re not here.
Fear of the deficit? Nope, just can’t do it. Not when the political power who wants you to be afraid stops caring about it when they’re in power, and starts caring about it when they’re not. Besides, when they are it balloons, and when they’re not it decreases. Almost like they’re the cause or something.
I don’t fear higher taxes. Most people simply don’t make enough money where changes in the marginal tax rate will even touch them. Will it destroy the economy? No. The economy could change though. If money gets returned to the lower classes they’ll spend it. The economy should actually get better. The economy was great when Eisenhower was President. When Kennedy was President. We built highways. We went to the moon. You know, when taxes were higher.
Taxes, right now, are lower than they have been in your entire lifetime. Unless you’re over 90 years old.
Iran isn’t building an atomic bomb. They could, if they’re not engaged with. Obama realized this and got them to stop. I’m not afraid on Iran. But some people haven’t recovered from the wound given us in 1979 by Iran. Trump may just be one of them. His National Security Advisor certainly hasn’t.
I don’t fear the government taking over my health care. I’d kind of rather they did so, actually. My mother has Medicare and they’ve treated her better than my doctors sometimes treat me. Her healthcare also costs one hell of a lot less. If we move to a system like the one Canada has then yes, your taxes will be higher. But your healthcare costs will be lower. Much lower than how much your taxes go up. I’d say that’s a trade to not be afraid of.
I don’t fear the government taking your guns. I’d actually be quite happy if they did it but that’s a conversation for another time. It’s simply not going to happen. We do need to have an honest conversation about it though. We’ve lost too many children to guns. Come on people, we can solve this.
There is so much more that people have been trying to make us all afraid of over the past couple of decades. Much more than I could list here. Vaccines, Godless schools, Black people voting, improper birth certificates, QAnon, Impeachment… the list just goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on. I’m not afraid of any of it.
And I’m not afraid of Donald J. Trump. Or Mike Pence. Or Moscow Mitch McConnell.
I’m not afraid of anything. I’m an American. A citizen of what used to be The United States of America. I’d like you to be too.
Being afraid is downright un-American. So stop it. All of you. You can do this.

While attending secondary school, she was a trombone player for her school's orchestra band. Savage graduated with a degree in accounting from the University of Kent, and started working at The Royal Bank of Scotland. She did backup vocals for English singer George Michael at the age of 16, and lent vocals to other musicians such as Mary J. While participating, she had difficulty dealing with the limelight. She said, "You have to always realize that people are watching. People admire you and want to see that you're strong; they don't want to see you breaking down." In 2009, Savage signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Once Upon a Time, record deal and endorsement This album is straight from my heart and it's something that I've worked so tirelessly for. A lot of people wondered why it took me so long a time to drop my own album. That's because we had to go through a lot of legal processes to clear some of the samples that we used, and that took us some months. Also, we wanted to work with notable producers outside the shores of the country like Oak who produces Rihanna. So, we had to work around his schedule and waited for them to have our time. But this album is something that I really took my time with because I didn't want it to be the usual Nigerian album that contains just party tracks from the beginning till the end. -Tiwa Savage, speaking to Vanguard about her debut studio album In December 2011, Savage co-hosted the second season of Nigerian Idol alongside IllRymz. She made her film debut with Joke Silva and Ireti Doyle in the stage adaptation of For Coloured Girls. Savage established the 323 Entertainment record label with her former manager and husband Tunji "Tee Billz" Balogun, to whom she got engaged on 5 February 2013. She joined Mavin Records in 2012 and was one of the lead acts on the label's compilation album Solar Plexus (2012). While attending Berklee College of Music, she networked with musicians Keith Harris, Derek Pate, Scott Coleman, Radar Ellis, and Darien Dorsey. In an interview with journalist Brenda Pike, she said she collaborated with producers Chuck Harmony, Warren "Oak" Felder, and Sossick, among others. She said her debut studio album would include songs in her native tongue. Tiwa Savage was featured on the remix of "Oyi" in 2012. Prior to collaborating with Flavour, she recorded her own version of the song. In celebration of the 52nd anniversary of Nigeria's independence, Savage performed her rendition of "Arise, O Compatriots" for Ndani Sessions. In November 2012, she collaborated with Waje, Praiz, Timi Dakolo and Pamela Egoh on the Ovation Red Carol theme song "Higher". Savage started recording her debut studio album Once Upon a Time in 2010. She held an album listening party at the Wheatbaker Hotel in Ikoyi in May 2013. During the listening party, she revealed the entire track list of the album and announced Iceberg Slim, Sarkodie and General Pype as featured acts. The album was released to the Nigerian public on 3 July 2013. It was released on iTunes a day before its official release. Savage named the album Once Upon a Time in order to portray the positive stories about her life. She said she wanted to motivate other upcoming artists by telling them that, once upon a time, she was a little girl in Isale Eko who dreamt of being a star. The album was supported by seven singles—"Kele Kele Love", "Love Me (3x)", "Without My Heart", "Ife Wa Gbona", "Folarin", "Olorun Mi" and "Eminado". It also includes political songs like "Middle Passage", which is about the struggles of African men in a foreign country. Savage recorded the album while pregnant with her son. The album was made available for free digital streaming on MTN Music on 21 December 2015. Within 24 hours of its release, it became the music platform's most-streamed album. The album was promoted through the website i-am-red.com. In June 2016, there were reports in the media that Savage had signed a management and publishing deal with Roc Nation. On 29 July 2016, she made it official by announcing the deal through her Instagram account, making her the first Nigerian artist to be signed to the label.

Sugarcane is a mixture of Afropop, funk, house, pop music, R&B and trap. On 24 August 2018, Savage headlined a concert at The O2's Indigo venue. Savage released the melodic track "One" on 15 November 2018. Produced by Killer Tunez, it touches upon themes of gratitude. Akinpelu Oluwafunmilayo for Legit.ng described the song as an "Afrobeat song with a soft tempo and smooth rhythmical flow". On 2 December 2018, Savage performed at the 2018 Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, which took place at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa. News about her performance at the festival was first reported in July 2018. The video for "One" was released on 7 December 2018. Directed by Clarence Peters, it was shot at a local beach in Osoroko, Lagos. In January 2019, YouTube took down the video for "One" following accusations of copyright violations. Due to not being able to verify a copyright violation, YouTube restored the video on 2 March 2019. On 13 March, Savage was added to the lineup of artists who performed at the 2019 Wireless Festival. On 2 May 2019, Universal Music Group announced the signing of Savage to a seven-year publishing and distribution deal. It was also revealed that she left Mavin Records Efe Ogbeni of Regime Music Societe and Vannessa Amadi-Ogbonna will be responsible for executive producing all of her projects under the label. Savage's future music will be released through the label's operations in more than 60 countries. In July 2019, Savage was featured on "Keys to the Kingdom", a track she co-wrote for Beyoncé's soundtrack album The Lion King: The Gift. She appeared on the track alongside Mr Eazi. On 5 September 2019, Savage released "49-99", her first single with Motown Records. The song references the line "49 sitting, 99 standing" from Fela Kuti's 1978 hit "Shuffering and Shmiling". Described as a blend of Afrobeat, R&B and pop music, "49-99" features syncopated percussion, humming background harmonies and crisp snares. The Meji Alabi-directed video for "49-99" features colorful imagery and symbolism. One of the video's scenes references the iconic portraits of Congolese schoolgirls taken in 1972 by photographer Eliot Elisofon. Another scene, in which Savage is laid out with lengthy braids, is reminiscent of Diana Ross' flower-accented look from the late 1960s. On 19 November 2019, Savage released the Black Jheerze-produced track "Attention" and the Pheelz-produced track "Owo Mi Da" as standalone singles. In "Attention", she admonishes her love interest for the lack of attention he is putting into their relationship while in "Owo Mi Da", she makes cut throat remarks at an unnamed borrower. Savage performed background vocals on "Èkó", a slow-burning ballad from Coldplay's eighth studio album Everyday Life (2019).
Family and personal life Tiwa Savage is married to Tunji "Tee Billz" Balogun. On 23 November 2013, the couple held their traditional marriage at the Ark in Lekki. The couple's white wedding was held on 26 April 2014 at the Armani Hotel in Dubai. On 1 January 2015, Savage and Balogun announced that they were expecting their first child together. Six months later, Savage gave birth to their son. On 28 April 2016, Balogun accused his wife of infidelity and his mother-in-law of witchcraft. In a 45-minute interview conducted by This Day newspaper and Pulse Nigeria, Savage extensively addressed her husband's lengthy social media posts regarding their marriage. She debunked her husband's infidelity claims and accused him of financial recklessness, drug addiction and abandonment. She said her marriage to him is over.

Thoughts on humanity, fame and love | Shah Rukh Khan
Namaskar. I’m a film megastar, i’m fifty one years of age, and i do not use Botox as yet. (Laughter) So i am smooth, however I do behave like you noticed like a 21-yr-old in my movies. Yeah, I do this. I sell goals, and that i peddle love to millions of humans back home in India who expect that i am the first-rate lover on this planet. (Laughter) should you don’t tell any person, i will tell you i am not, but I not ever let that assumption go away. (Laughter) I’ve also been made to realize there are plenty of you right here who have not seen my work, and i think rather sad for you. (Laughter) (Applause) that does not take away from the fact that i am entirely self-obsessed, as a film famous person should be. (Laughter) that’s when my buddies, Chris and Juliet referred to as me right here to converse concerning the future "you." Naturally, it follows i’m going to converse in regards to the gift me. (Laughter) when you consider that I real consider that humanity is a lot like me.(Laughter) it’s. It’s. It’s an getting older movie celebrity, grappling with all of the newness round itself, wondering whether or not it got it correct within the first situation, and still trying to find a option to hold on shining regardless. I was born in a refugee colony within the capital city of India, New Delhi. And my father used to be a freedom fighter. My mom was, well, just a fighter like mothers are. And much like the long-established homo sapiens, we struggled to survive. Once I was once in my early 20s, I lost each my mom and dad, which I have to admit appears a bit of careless of me now, but — (Laughter) I do do not forget the night time my father died, and i bear in mind the driving force of a neighbor who was once riding us to the hospital. He mumbled something about "useless men and women don’t tip so well" and walked away into the darkish. And that i was best 14 then, and i put my father’s useless physique in the back seat of the car, and my mother besides me, I started driving back from the medical institution to the house. And in the middle of her quiet crying, my mom checked out me and he or she said, "Son, when did you gain knowledge of to force?" and that i idea about it and realized, and that i stated to my mom, "simply now, mom." (Laughter) So from that night onwards, much akin to humanity in its adolescence, I learned the crude tools of survival. And the framework of existence was very, very simple then, to be sincere. , you just ate what you obtained and did some thing you were advised to do. I thought celiac was once a vegetable, and vegan, of course, used to be Mr. Spock’s misplaced comrade in "megastar Trek." (Laughter) You married the primary woman that you dated, and also you have been a techie in the event you might repair the carburetor to your automobile. I relatively notion that gay used to be a cosmopolitan English word for comfortable. And Lesbian, of direction, was once the capital of Portugal, as you all comprehend. (Laughter) the place was I? We relied on methods created by way of the toil and sacrifice of generations before to shield us, and we felt that governments honestly worked for our betterment.Science was once easy and logical, Apple used to be nonetheless then only a fruit owned via Eve first and then Newton, now not with the aid of Steve Jobs, until then. And "Eureka!" was once what you screamed when you wanted to run bare on the streets. You went at any place life took you for work, and humans had been more often than not welcoming of you. Migration was a time period then still reserved for Siberian cranes, no longer human beings. Most importantly, you had been who you were and you mentioned what you suggestion. Then in my late 20s, I shifted to the sprawling town of Mumbai, and my framework, like the newly industrialized aspirational humanity, commenced to change. In the urban rush for a new, extra embellished survival, matters began to seem a little distinctive.I met men and women who had descended from everywhere the arena, faces, races, genders, cash-lenders. Definitions grew to become more and more fluid. Work started out to define you at the moment in an overwhelmingly equalizing manner, and all the methods began to believe much less secure to me, virtually too thick to hold on to the variety of mankind and the human must progress and grow. Recommendations had been flowing with extra freedom and speed. And i experienced the miracle of human innovation and cooperation, and my own creativity, when supported by way of the resourcefulness of this collective endeavor, catapulted me into superstardom. I started to feel that I had arrived, and most likely, by the point I used to be forty, I was really, rather flying. I was once in all places the location. ? I would executed 50 movies with the aid of then and 200 songs, and i might been knighted with the aid of the Malaysians. I had been given the perfect civil honor by the French executive, the title of which for the life of me I can’t pronounce even unless now.(Laughter) i am sorry, France, and thanks, France, for doing that. But a lot greater than that, I got to meet Angelina Jolie — (Laughter) for 2 and a half of seconds. (Laughter) and i am definite she additionally remembers that encounter somewhere. Ok, perhaps not. And i sat next to Hannah Montana on a round dinner desk with her back towards me as a rule. Like I said, I was once flying, from Miley to Jolie, and humanity used to be hovering with me. We were both generally flying off the manage, surely. And then you definately all understand what occurred. The web occurred. I was in my late 40s, and that i began tweeting like a canary in a birdcage and assuming that, you realize, individuals who peered into my world would admire it for the miracle I believed it to be.However some thing else awaited me and humanity. You recognize, we had expected a spread of strategies and goals with the improved connectivity of the arena. We had no longer bargained for the village-like enclosure of idea, of judgment, of definition that flowed from the equal location that freedom and revolution was once taking position in. Everything I mentioned took a new meaning. The whole lot I did — excellent, bad, unpleasant — was there for the arena to remark upon and choose. In fact, the whole thing I didn’t say or do also met with the identical fate. 4 years in the past, my lovely spouse Gauri and me decided to have a third little one. It used to be claimed on the net that he was once the love child of our first child who was once 15 years old. It sounds as if, he had sown his wild oats with a girl even as using her car in Romania. And yeah, there used to be a false video to go with it. And we have been so disturbed as a family. My son, who is nineteen now, even now when you say "hiya" to him, he simply turns round and says, "however bro, I did not actually have a European using license." (Laughter) Yeah. In this new world, slowly, reality became virtual and virtual grew to become actual, and i started to consider that I would no longer be who I desired to be or say what I genuinely inspiration, and humanity right now entirely recognized with me. I think each of us were going by way of our midlife obstacle, and humanity, like me, was fitting an overexposed prima donna. I started to sell the whole lot, from hair oil to diesel generators.Humanity used to be buying everything from crude oil to nuclear reactors. You recognize, I even tried to get right into a skintight superhero suit to reinvent myself. I have got to admit I failed miserably. And just an apart I wish to say on behalf of the entire Batmen, Spider-guys and Supermen of the sector, you need to commend them, due to the fact that it quite hurts in the crotch, that superhero suit. (Laughter) Yeah, i’m being honest. I have to inform you this here. Quite. And by accident, I occurred to even invent a brand new dance form which I did not realise, and it became a rage. So if it is all correct, and you may have noticeable somewhat of me, so i am rather shameless, i’ll exhibit you. It was called the Lungi dance. So if it’s all right, i’m going to simply show you. I’m proficient or else.(Cheers) So it went whatever like this. Lungi dance. Lungi dance. Lungi dance. Lungi dance. Lungi dance. Lungi dance. Lungi dance. Lungi dance. Lungi dance. Lungi dance. Lungi dance. Lungi. That’s it. It became a rage. (Cheers) It particularly did. Like you realize, no one might make any experience of what was taking place except me, and that i didn’t provide a damn, particularly, since the entire world, and whole humanity, appeared as stressed and misplaced as I was. I didn’t stop then. I even tried to reconstruct my identity on the social media like every body else does. I thought if I put on philosophical tweets out there humans will suppose i am with it, however one of the most responses I acquired from those tweets were particularly complicated acronyms which I didn’t realise. You recognize? ROFL, LOL. "Adidas," anyone wrote again to one in all my extra idea-frightening tweets and i was once questioning why would you title a sneaker, I mean, why would you write back the title of a sneaker to me? And that i requested my 16-12 months-historical daughter, and she enlightened me. "Adidas" now means "All day I dream about sex." (Laughter) particularly. I didn’t be aware of if that. So I wrote again, "WTF" in bold to Mr. Adidas, thanking secretly that some acronyms and matters will not exchange at all. WTF. But here we are. I’m 51 years historic, like I instructed you, and mind-numbing acronyms however, I simply need to let you know if there was a momentous time for humanity to exist, it is now, on account that the reward you is courageous. The gift you is hopeful. The reward you is revolutionary and inventive, and of path, the reward you is annoyingly indefinable. And in this spell-binding, imperfect second of existence, feeling a bit of courageous just earlier than I got here right here, I determined to take a excellent, hard look at my face. And i spotted that i’m beginning to seem more and more like the wax statue of me at Madame Tussaud’s. (Laughter) Yeah, and in that second of cognizance, I requested probably the most valuable and pertinent query to humanity and me: Do I have to repair my face? Fairly. I am an actor, like I told you, a present day expression of human creativity. The land I come from is the supply of inexplicable but quite simple spirituality. In its significant generosity, India made up our minds somehow that I, the Muslim son of a broke freedom fighter who by chance ventured into the trade of promoting dreams, must grow to be its king of romance, the "Badhshah of Bollywood," the finest lover the nation has ever obvious … With this face. Yeah. (Laughter) Which has alternately been described as unpleasant, unconventional, and surprisingly, now not chocolatey ample. (Laughter) The individuals of this historic land embraced me of their limitless love, and i have discovered from these folks that neither power nor poverty can make your lifestyles more magical or less tortuous. I’ve discovered from the individuals of my nation that the honour of a existence, a person, a tradition, a faith, a nation certainly resides in its potential for grace and compassion.I’ve realized that some thing strikes you, something urges you to create, to construct, something keeps you from failing, some thing helps you survive, is perhaps the oldest and the easiest emotion known to mankind, and that is love. A mystic poet from my land famously wrote, (Recites poem in Hindi) (Poem ends) Which loosely translates into that something — yeah, if you recognize Hindi, please clap, yeah. (Applause) it’s very difficult to don’t forget. Which loosely interprets into virtually pronouncing that the entire books of skills that you just would learn after which go forward and impart your abilities by means of innovation, by way of creativity, by means of technological know-how, but mankind will on no account be the wiser about its future except it is coupled with a way of love and compassion for their fellow beings. The two and a 1/2 alphabets which kind the phrase "," because of this "love," if you are able to appreciate that and apply it, that itself is ample to enlighten mankind. So I real feel the long run "you" must be a you that loves. In any other case it’s going to stop to flourish. It is going to perish in its own self-absorption. So you may use your energy to build partitions and maintain people outside, or you can also use it to break boundaries and welcome them in. You can also use your religion to make folks afraid and terrify them into submission, or you should use it to offer braveness to people in order that they upward thrust to the finest heights of enlightenment. You should utilize your vigour to construct nuclear bombs and spread the darkness of destruction, or you need to use it to unfold the enjoyment of light to millions. You can also filthy up the oceans callously and scale back the entire forests. That you can destroy the ecology, or turn to them with love and regenerate life from the waters and timber. You may also land on Mars and construct armed citadels, or you may also appear for existence-types and species to learn from and respect. And you should utilize the entire moneys we all have earned to wage futile wars and provides weapons in the palms of little kids to kill every different with, or you should use it to make extra meals to fill their stomachs with. My country has taught me the capability for a human being to like is comparable to godliness. It shines forth in a global which civilization, I feel, already has tampered an excessive amount of with. In the last few days, the talks right here, the exotic people coming and showing their talent, talking about man or woman achievements, the innovation, the science, the sciences, the advantage we’re gaining via being right here in the presence of TED Talks and all of you’re motives sufficient for us to rejoice the future "us." but within that party the hunt to domesticate our potential for love and compassion has to claim itself, has to say itself, simply as equally. So I think the longer term "you" is an infinite you. It’s referred to as a chakra in India, like a circle. It ends where it begins from to complete itself. A you that perceives time and house in a different way knows each your unimaginable and first-rate value and your complete unimportance in the larger context of the universe. A you that returns again to the common innocence of humanity, which loves from the purity of coronary heart, which sees from the eyes of fact, which desires from the clarity of an untampered mind. The longer term "you" must be like an aging movie superstar who has been made to feel that there’s a likelihood of an international which is totally, wholly, self-obsessively in love with itself. A world — relatively, it has to be a you to create a world which is its own first-rate lover. That I think, ladies and gents, will have to be the future "you." thanks very a lot. Shukriya. (Applause) thank you. (Applause) thank you.(Applause) .

The Push for Jail Reform and Greater Civilian Oversight, LA's March 2020 Ballot
We're spotlighting an initiative that is poised to disrupt harms that exist within the nation's largest jail system.
In September of this year, Reform LA Jails submitted 240,000 signatures to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors -- 100,000 more than what was required -- to ensure that in March of 2020 the Reform Jails and Community Reinvestment Initiative would appear on the ballot.
Voters in Los Angeles County will not only have the opportunity to say with one voice that their loved ones who struggle with mental illness deserve treatment, not incarceration, but also that the Los Angeles County Civilian Oversight Commission be granted subpoena power, allowing it to independently investigate deputy misconduct and be empowered to develop a plan which will investigate how to reduce jail populations and invest in alternatives to incarceration. More, it could set precedent for jail systems across the nation.
The effort to secure the signatures needed to move the needle on healthcare, human rights, and dignity for some of the County's most vulnerable and targeted residents was led by Patrisse Khan Cullors and Jasmyne Cannick -- and bolstered by the community organizing work undertaken by Dignity and Power Now, which Khan-Cullors co-founded, and Justice LA, a broad coalition of organizations dedicated to reforming Los Angeles's criminal justice system. It was the first time in the County's history that a ballot initiative had been successfully advanced by two Black women and a stunning gathering of family members and survivors who bore painful witness to harms that had been visited upon their loved ones.
“I do this work not only as a woman who has been a community organizer and strategist for two decades, but as a sister,” said Patrisse Khan Cullors. "My brother Monte has lived with psychiatric illness and has never hurt another human being. But he was brutalized in the LA County Jails and no one was held accountable. No one should have to go through what he went through, what my parents went through. What I did,” she continued.
“But with 25 percent of the people incarcerated in the LA County jails living with psychiatric disorder, it won't end unless we demand that it end. This is the concluding arc of work begun in 2016 with the establishment of the Civilian Oversight Commission that was led by community efforts. And it's also part of a larger moment of reckoning with our law enforcement community given that the voters will also be voting for the next D.A.”
In March of 2020, as voters make their voices heard about how they want to see people receive an expanse of care, not the breadth of our ability to bully, so too will they have the chance to make their voices heard about what they expect from their local D.A., Jackie Lacey. Lacey has come under significant criticism for her failure to prosecute even one member of law enforcement who used lethal force against unarmed people -- despite the hundreds of civilians that have been killed by Los Angeles police during Lacey's tenure.
Earlier this year, Lacey refused to file manslaughter charges against LAPD officer Clifford Proctor for killing Brendon Glenn, an unarmed Black man, in 2015 -- as even LAPD Chief Charlie Beck recommended that she do so. Her inaction prompted a statement from the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, with staff attorney Melanie Ochoa saying, "[Lacey's] decision suggests that no matter how egregious an officer's conduct is, no matter the evidence she has before her, she does not intend to hold any officer accountable for unnecessarily and inexplicably shooting a member of the public.”
“Ultimately,” said Khan Cullors, "these are all public servants who voters have trusted with the responsibility of safeguarding all of our health and safety. They have violated that trust. They have to answer for that failure.”
Lamia El-Sadek, managing director of Dignity and Power Now, agreed and added, “At a time when there is an increase in psychiatric illness throughout California and the nation, one would think that we would seek to be compassionate, proactive and just, plain smart in our decision-making. We know that investing in care upfront decreases harm to all and is, frankly, fiscally responsible. The cost of not caring for our people is not something Californians can afford -- physically, spiritually, or economically. The people of California have already led the way in compassion and evidence-based policies with initiatives like Proposition 47. We should continue to be a beacon for all our residents -- and the nation,” Sadek concluded.
Martin Luther King once called on us to act in the fierce moment of now. That moment, that fierce moment of now, called forward by survivors is upon the residents of Los Angeles County. They have the power to demonstrate before the nation a powerful truth: if compassion and fiscally sound public health and safety measures can be centered in a county that is home to the largest jail system in the U.S., then it can take hold anywhere.
