Phones are blowing up, questions are being shouted, the JLA Dark FEEL like they should tell somebody about the ghost kid... but also this feels VERY "Call for help-y" so they might throw their weight around instead and pretend they know nothing. World leader are meaningfully staring at their Dear Beloved Dead Grandmother's photos as they send LIVID assistants to hound the American into answering the DAMN PHONE-!

Danny feels calmer now. He has stolen like....700 bucks from secret security's various wallets. He's going to buy himself BOUGIE groceries. Some...some NICE take out. Maybe a little cake. Yeah~ Cake for Danny~

If anyone needs him? No you don't. He needs to go do some shopping, eat, lie on the floor of his shower and just... vibe for a bit under the spray. In the dark maybe. Sleep for a week. Have his food. Yummy little treats.

I had a similar experience during my internship this summer. My job was to sort through and archive the papers of this woman from Arkansas in the 1920s-1970s.

And folks, she was a hateful person. Truly. The amount of absolutely vile racist, antisemitic, xenophobic material I had to wade through was soul searing. Pretty much any -phobia or -ism you can name, it was there. She went hard on the white supremacy and Lost Cause bandwagon.

But she was also a loyal friend, a level headed problem solver, a dutiful sister. The family genealogy experience, a cat lover, an active member of her community. I went through her personal letters and her diary and learned about the minutiae of her life. Right now, I'm probably the single person on this planet who knows the most about her.

That experience would have been so much easier if I could hate her. Instead, I was treated to the very hard lesson that every single person who has ever lived was a complex, multifaceted human being. I empathized with this woman, recognized experiences we have in common.

Working with this woman's memory for eight hours a day, treating her material past with the respect I'm sure she wouldn't give me, was extremely difficult. But I learned a lot about myself, my professional ethics, and how I interact with the world. It was a humbling, valuable experience, and I think the world would be a better place if more people had the chance to do something similar.

Broke: Acknowledging that a character who is an objectively terrible person is also a complex and intentionally well thought out individual with different levels of nuance you can empathize with in some ways while not in others is immediately “woobifying” or “poor little meow meowifying” them.

Woke: “This character is a bad person” and “this character is still a person” are two statements that can, should and do coexist and admitting that they exhibit nuance and depth and are more than just their bad actions doesn’t immediately excuse or condone their bad actions or mean that you’re ignoring or trying to soften the canonical version of the character.

Bespoke: That’s the whole point, that’s always been the point, to be made to empathize with horrible people so you can understand that they can be anyone, that bad people can be likeable, can be interesting, can be human, are human, and it’s scary to think about all the ways they’re just like you and all the ways they’re just like everything you hate, forcing the use of critical skills in media analysis, forcing a confrontation of the duality of man.

i had this sketch for an ask @thehollowwriter sent me AGES ago, like it was rotting in my drafts since you sent it (i’m sorry i never got to it, the adhd brain be adhd’ing unfortunately) but it’s silly and i’m going through my mountain of asks and stuff slowly weeding stuff out

just a quick like thing between riddle and gia— believe it or not, they actually do get along. gia does do their best to respect riddle when they’re visiting heartslabyul (which they do often thanks to ace and deuce ofc) so they do try to abide by house rules while there. riddle does appreciate that gia will study with adeuce and shows a genuine aptitude for teaching (foreshadowing anyone?) and while they’re not especially close, their friendship does build up more specifically over gia’s sophomore year sine trey and cater are gone for their internship, riddle ends up being kinda absorbed into the heartshackle gang.

that being said, gia will ABSOLUTELY go behind riddle’s back when they need to get shit done with no regards to Da Rules(tm). they like him just fine and they do acknowledge his efforts in self-betterment, but riddle do be riddling and gia couldn’t give a rancid fuck about laws. they’ll humor him, but only to a certain extent.

dylan’s innie vs outie relationship with his wife cannot end well, can it? if outie dylan thinks of it as cheating, or if his wife starts to only care about innie dylan, or if she resents outie dylan, or if innie dylan becomes too jealous of the life with his wife and kids that he’s being prevented from remembering… someeeething is gonna go wrong.

But speaking of tbhtbh do you think Valtor would ever resort to using a love potion or at least something of that nature? I can't remember if you've answered this question or not but i thought it was a fun ask, this could also be for sparked too. I feel like Valtor thinks he's above that cause of his natural charm🔥tm but maybe he might grow some self awareness and get desperate 🤔

Hi!!!! As always these days, big apologies for not giving more updates, I swear I’m gonna finish this chapter one day haha

My internship is going to continue until end of march, and after that I’m pretty much entering straight into my bachelor semester without break. So I can’t even offer an optimistic prediction rn. If you’re rereading Sparked, pls know that so am I. (Looking back I have NO IDEA how I could write like 9000 words every 1-2 weeks, WHERE has that energy gone oh my god.)

Talking about current political events: don’t worry, it’s gonna get MUCH worse here in Germany too! 🙃

But! What really helped me is going to my local town hall meetings, and joining up with the tiny offshoot of the Green Party that runs my town. The medium age there is like, sixty, but it’s honestly so healing for the soul to be surrounded by ppl who care so much, and have the know-how to make changes in our immediate environment. Even if the world goes to shit on a national level, the people who run things closest to us are always gonna do the best with what they have. It’s also so funny to watch two dozen 60-year-olds discuss how to best bully the one local AfD politician. Or plan Instagram reels with them. The seniors are alright is what I’m saying

Anyway, to get to your question!!! As always my answer is going to be kind of “it depends”, but leaning towards a pretty strong No.

Main reason for that is that we only have 2 canonical examples for a love potion, and both are, um. Not what Valtor would be into. The more recent example would be Diaspro's potion for Sky, which seems to take effect almost immediately and comes with a near mindless suggestibility, total obedience, and some pretty egregious mood swings and personality changes. She could tell Sky what to believe, what to do, and how to feel, with Sky falling into really atypical, bloodthirsty rages when faced with the Winx. Keep in mind, he's faced way worse threats to both himself and his friends before, and has always been pretty blasé about it.

While we do know that Valtor has no qualms about using mind control, and has always pursued control over others as his end goal, in any fic I've written so far his obsession with Bloom depends highly on the challenge/threat she poses to him, and the unexpectedness of her actions. In Sparked especially, Bloom's unpredictability plays a huge part in Valtor's escalating fascination with her, and I cannot see him willing to throw that away for a subjugated love-potion version of her. Plus, as you mentioned, Valtor prides himself on his charm and persuasiveness. Using a love potion would be akin to admitting defeat, and he would NEVER do that!

Similarly, in tbhtbh, Valtor doesn’t dare to try and use his mark on her, for fear of turning Bloom into a mindless puppet as a consequence. Here is where it gets tricky, though, because I CAN see this version of Valtor being way more ready to use drastic measures to get his way. Tbhtbh!Valtor is motivated largely by his desire for control, and the love potion would give him that with way less obvious side effects than his mark. Additionally, the love potion wouldn’t require any active input from him. It's a one-time-usage kinda deal, not a constant supervision of her mind. And the idea of Bloom being in love with — or even merely affectionate towards— him, might seriously pull his resolve into question. After those infamous three years, tbhtbh!Valtor is pretty unhinged already, and could convince himself of almost anything if the situation is dire enough. Though even then, I can’t see it being his first choice — if only because it would hurt his ego.

Now, outside of any specific story, I'm gonna be honest: there is nothing a love potion would do that would go against Valtor's canon principles. In a really dark fic, love-potioning Bloom would just be mind control, with the added insult-to-injury benefit of her applying all that blind faith, loyalty and affection to him instead of her friends. In a scenario where he does not yet have that begrudging respect for her as an opponent, he would absolutely pull that stunt. Or hell, even with that respect, if he was just a little more vindictive and pragmatic.

In any case, whether he would use one or not, I think Valtor would clearly see a love potion as mind control. There would be no convincing himself that Bloom's feelings for him were real; wether he'd do it out of revenge, need for control, or plain wish for her affection, he'd be very clear-eyed about the reality of it.

Notable mentions to the only other example we get or love potions being used in Winx Club: season 2! That would be Amore's spell on Améntia, the princess of the Downlands. It’s been a while since I've watched that episode, but I vaguely remember that Améntia IMMEDIATELY switched her obsession with Brandon over to Sponsus, who she had pretty much ignored up to that point. Leaving aside how the show glossed over the pretty mind-controlly implications of that, Améntia seemed to be pretty much unchanged personality wise, afterwards. While that might be a version of love-potioning that would appeal to Valtor's very unique honor code, the logistics of that would probably be a no-go for him. I just can’t see him stooping to using pixie magic, or even allying himself with one. Just wanted to mention it, for completions' sake. (There is a love-potion-esque spell Amore displays in s3 too, during the pixie’s “battle” against the Trix. She claims that it would be able to make Valtor fall in love with any of the Trix, but we never see that spell put into effect, so I’m not counting it here.)

Morrigan: A Rough summary

I sent this to a moot and decided I'd share a break down of the the Morrigan Lore TM

Right so, firstly, like Silas and Finn, Morrigan is a cookie cutter shark. Though Silas is an abyssal cookie cutter shark, and he's just a coastal one. He and his family are like Azul and the tweels, they're more animalistic, they're not the pretty, humanlike Ariel-like mermaid that many come to think of when they hear the term "mermaid" or "merfolk"

Now, my interpretation of twst (mostly through Azul's story) is that human culture and beauty standards heavily influenced merfolk and their culture, eventually resulting in features like webbed hands, sharp teeth and claws, and other animalistic features being deemed as barbaric and undesirable.

The general idea of mers like Finn, Azul, etc, is that they are stupid, wild, dangerous/murderous, and more creatures than people. This stereotype especially extends to abyssal mers like Silas (it's part of why some merfolk flat out refuse to by from him)

Now, in twst it's pretty clear that magic dictates your standing in society, and often those with powerful magic are "higher" up the social ladder. This too applies to merfolk, and when you're monstrous creatures like Morrigan and his family, the best you can hope for is major success and glory.

Morrigan has several siblings, and out of all of them he was the oldest and the one with the most powerful magic. His parents realised they basically had a child prodigy on their hands, and this led to him basically being in a Riddle-type situation.

He was their trophy, their showpony, far outshining his siblings and essentially "overcoming" the monstrous-ness that everyone hates with his skill in magic. Don't think he liked the attention, though, his parents' praise was very conditional and he didn't exactly get himself in their favour when trying to protect his siblings from them. Despite his efforts, his siblings are still incredibly jealous of him and kinda don't like him :(

Now with this upbringing, naturally he has an intense strive to be the absolute best of the best. Master every spell, win every duel, ace every test. Like Riddle, he has a LOT of anger due to his treatment and situation, but unlike Riddle this anger caused him to frequently get into violent fights with his schoolmates and come home bruised and bloodied.

At NRC, this got worse. At first he was well behaved like Azul or Riddle would be, but eventually he realised he no longer had his parents breathing down his neck.... and just kinda went batshit.

Now, he's wasn't a complete asshole constantly all the time. In fact many found him charming, handsome, too. However he was a bit of a bully and easily angered, and when he got angry enough he got extremely violent. He beat the ever loving shit out of his own dorm leader, and part of the reason he was almost expelled was because when fighting with some guy, he tried to bite their throat (reminder his teeth are like the tweels...)

In his third/fourth year tho, he was kinda like "Well shit I don't think this is good for me" and started working on being better.

When he began looking for internships, he wasn't sure what to do. His parents just wanted him to do "something important", they didn't care all that much as long as it brought in a lot of money and recognition and didn't make them look bad.

Everyone told him he should be a magishift player, police, etc, etc, but he wasn't interested in any of that.

However, through some self assessment he realised he did work well with kids and they always liked him, and he was food at teaching/helping his friends study, so he thought "Hey, why not teaching?"

He ended up teaching at a magic school for gifted merfolk, and the reason is because all of them are "gifted kids," and he didn't want them to suffer and struggle like he did. That is a very important job. His parents were not impressed, but it could be worse and he was stubborn, so they "allowed it" (even though he's an adult wtufjasgj)

As he got older, he developed better control over his temper, but he would still get violent if REALLY mad.

And then he met Silas, and they do try to kill each other upon first meeting :P. They fall in love, get married, and have kids, but Morrigan is murdered before they- (well, just Finn) are born.
