As a Canadian, and as someone living in a country that has a UBI framework, I think a lot of people misunderstand just how basic Universal Basic Income is.
TL;DR: I agree on principle, but identifying greed as a problem doesn't solve deeper systemic issues.
I see some armchair social theorists on here say that UBI is enough to fight more pressing social battles; that it empowers you to demand better rights as a worker, as a citizen. I've been on UBI and, well - no. UBI is enough to allow you to survive. If you want to invest in a project, if there's a worthwhile cause you want to get involved in that requires some involvement or some capital injection (even something as simple as buying supplies to fashion picketing signs) - that's on you. In Canada, UBI is calculated based on median income, which means that it isn't enough to kickstart some people's Post-Work-Era Roddenberry-Powered Magical Socialism where nobody works and everyone contributes out of sheer passion and drive.
UBI is there so you can survive, and so you can eventually have the resources and skillsets needed to contribute to Society without UBI lining your pockets. More importantly, UBI is there to ensure that there are no "bad jobs" to speak of, because even the fast food joint's janitor who's on Minimum Wage starts with better conditions than a UBI beneficiary. In Canada, a kid with no diploma who makes a living manning a Tim Hortons' cash register doesn't have to fight with the system to obtain credits related to his living conditions. The real problem has three prongs:
Welfare kings and queens who make it harder for legitimate demands of financial assistance to go through;
The corporate world that's forgotten that the very first rung past UBI needs to be 100% livable and needs to allow for at least some measure of savings to be something that can be planned for. UBI should facilitate survival, what happens when even minimum wage doesn't allow you to live right?
Slum lords who buy off properties initially set aside for Affordable Housing programs and who drive market values so far high that entry-level workers have to settle with living several hours away from their place of work.
But Sweden and Norway - Hold it. Sweden and Norway are filthy fucking rich. Sweden and Norway are Petrostates. Canada? Not so much. Year after year sees Affordable Living programs or revisions to UBI being floated that would turn it from a lifeline to an actually workable form of remuneration, but year after year sees my local politicians butt their heads against the fact that any kind of serious Social Security net can't just pay for itself; and Canadians are already sadly renowned for living in a country choked by taxes - all because our already-present pro-Social infrastructure is complex, inefficient and sadly vital for most low-income residents.
Imagine how insane implementing it would be on a per-State level, on the American side. Imagine the work that needs to be done; not just in terms of greater education, but also in the sense that there's an entire infrastructure you guys never put in place. Some of my colleagues are American expats, and their first big shock came in the form of their first tax bill on Canadian soil. Free healthcare isn't free, the load is just spread across the country's residents. It also means that UBI and Free Healthcare programs can only cover so much, seeing as even if you put the load primarily on those above a certain income level, those below it are still going to feel the pinch. God knows I do, every tax season, and even if it's for a fundamentally good cause.
So. Beyond harping that UBI is a basic right and that we all deserve to rest, ask yourself how wealthy your State is, first. Try and model the kind of help you'd be getting. Try projecting it as a deferred hit on your salary or your savings - one that you need to account for year after year, forever.
The social model where none of us work and all of us effectively play with shelter and rest being in-built facets of our social contract would require a total upheaval of our current system - and something tells me most people wouldn't like the transitional period between the two. Would people really maintain power stations or work hospitals just because it's the right thing to do?
Call me cynical, but I've been alive long enough to really, really, seriously doubt that logic. Sooner or later, someone's going to want to look out for Number One. The USSR fell for that very reason, and my own country's very pro-Social policies are rife with examples of what happens when someone with good intentions gets unfettered access to a chequebook, supposedly for the good of all. Remuneration is a great control system, in that respect, especially when we know that in an Egalitarian system, there's always going to be one or two chucklefucks who think they're more Egalitarian than the rest.
Greed is in all of us; the only thing that keeps you or me honest is our lack of power. Money, as they say, is the root of all Evil. Remove money from the equation and something else will take its place. Social status, most likely.
Then let's make all of us equal! Communism FTW!
you're likely American if you're reading this, how do you think most people will react to that kind of assertion?
even in an ideal system, the Overseer would have more power. That, right there, is enough of an imbalance for unfair treatment to surface.
Again, we've seen what happened with Soviet Russia, and I'm not saying this to be a bootlicker. Open a history book: Lenin barely managed to approximate Marx's idea of an Egalitarian state and Stalin identified the cracks in the system and pushed them wide open, priming it for collapse.

nanami’s christmas party was supposed to be peaceful — a little too peaceful, if you were being honest. the warm hum of soft jazz carols, polite laughter, and the clink of wine glasses was enough to lull anyone into a festive daze.
but you? you were on high alert.
why? because GOJO SATORU, your friend — well, kinda — was out for blood.
or more accurately, out for a kiss.
“come oonnnn, it’s tradition!” he’d declared earlier, dangling a sprig of mistletoe in your face with the grin of a man who had no intention of playing fair.
“tradition my ass, satoru,” you snapped, sidestepping him. “stop harassing people with that thing.”
“people?” he gasped, clutching his chest dramatically. “you wound me. it’s just you, baby. you’re the target.”
and now, somewhere between the gingerbread cookies and nanami’s impeccable charcuterie board, gojo had taken things to a whole new level of absurdity. he’d taped mistletoe — actually taped it — to his iconic black glasses and was prowling around the party like some deranged holiday predator.
“get back here, you coward!”
you darted behind the christmas tree, stifling a laugh as gojo nearly tripped over a box of ornaments.
“you look ridiculous,” you called out, catching a glimpse of him through the branches.
“ridiculous?” he echoed, mockingly aghast. “this is genius. nanami even complimented me.”
“he called you a menace.”
“same thing.”
you rolled your eyes, trying to slip away unnoticed, but of course, the man had reflexes sharper than a hawk’s.
“aha!” he exclaimed, spotting you as you rounded the couch.
“satoru, don’t you dare —”
too late. with a burst of speed that defied his lanky frame, he cut you off, pressing you into a corner. his towering form blocked your escape entirely, and his smug grin told you he knew it.
“gotcha,” he said, the mistletoe on his glasses dangling obnoxiously close to your face.
“you’re insufferable,” you hissed, your heart racing — though whether it was from exertion or the way his intense gaze pinned you in place, you weren’t sure.
“and yet,” he murmured, leaning closer, his voice dropping to a husky whisper, “you’re not running anymore.”
you opened your mouth to retort, but the words died on your lips as his hands braced the wall on either side of you. he was so close you could see the flecks of icy blue in his eyes behind the mistletoe.
“you’ve been driving me crazy all night,” he said, his tone low and rough, sending a shiver down your spine. “do you have any idea what you do to me?”
your breath hitched, the tension thick enough to drown in. “satoru,” you started, trying to regain some semblance of control, but he cut you off with a wry smirk.
“it’s tradition,” he murmured again, and before you could argue, his lips crashed into yours.
it wasn’t playful, like you’d expect — it was heated, overwhelming, and utterly consuming. his mouth moved against yours with a yearning that left you breathless, his tongue teasing yours in a way that sent sparks straight to your core.
your knees buckled slightly, but his hands were there instantly, gripping your hips to steady you as he pressed closer.
“damn, you taste better than the cookies,” he muttered against your lips, his voice breathless but teasing.
“you’re insane,” you managed to gasp, though your hands betrayed you by tangling in his hair, pulling him closer.
“and you love it,” he shot back, kissing you again with a fervor that left you dizzy.
when he finally pulled back, both of you breathless and flushed, he adjusted his glasses with a satisfied grin.
“merry christmas to me,” he quipped, tapping the broken piece of tape still clinging to the mistletoe on his glasses.
you shoved his chest playfully, trying to ignore the way your heart was still racing.
“you’re unbelievable.”
“and yet, you kissed me back,” he pointed out, his grin widening.
“shut up.”
“make me.”

backshots with subtop!abby 18+ - abbys hands rested on your hips, her shaking breath tickling the shell of your ear. you felt her hand trail up your back, gently rubbing your tense shoulders. she let out a low groan as her strap sunk deep into you. abby could've sworn she could feel you wrapped around her cock, the sight alone eliciting needy whimpers from the woman behind you. it didn't take long for her to find her rhythm, making sure to check with you every time she wanted to go harder. your moans mixed with her harness rubbing deliciously against her clit was already pushing abby over the edge, her hands gripping at every part of your body she could reach. "fuckk- fuck baby" abby whined, you felt the weight of her muscular body as she leaned forward, connecting her chest with your shoulder blades. abbys hand snaked up your back, reaching around your neck and entrapping you in something adjacent to a headlock. her bicep pressed feather-light against your throat, always so careful with you. you reached up, gripping her bicep and urging her to press harder. ever desperate to please you, abby pulled you in harder. the combination of her bicep around your throat and her strap pounding into you pushed you over the edge, of course urging abbys release soon after. she made sure to be incredibly gentle while cleaning you up, placing tender kisses along your neck. you both intertwined, you were unsure wether it was the way abby fucked you or your post-orgasm high making you feel like you were floating, but you were grateful either way.

March 23rd, 2024 - Melbourne, Australia
The roar of the crowd was still fresh in Lando’s ears as he stepped off the podium, his heart still racing from the rush of adrenaline. The Australian Grand Prix had been everything he’d hoped for and more—a beautiful battle for P3, finally landing him on the podium after an agonizing stretch to start the 2024 season. As the champagne sprayed, he shared the moment with Carlos, who took the victory, and Charles, who stood proud beside him in second.
Back in the paddock, Lando was buzzing, the excitement from the race still keeping him on cloud nine. But there was one thing that had his smile a little wider than usual, one thing that his friends, if they noticed, weren’t going to let him live down.
As he made his way back to the driver’s lounge, Alex, George, and Charles were already there, laughing and talking about the race. Lando plopped down onto the couch next to Charles, his phone still clutched in his hand. His grin couldn’t be wiped off his face, no matter how hard he tried.
—You’re seriously gonna be like this all day, aren’t you?— Alex said, glancing over at him with a knowing smile.
Lando chuckled, slipping the phone back into his pocket. —What can I say? It’s been a good race. I’m happy.—
George leaned over, raising an eyebrow. —Yeah, we can see that. You’ve been glued to your phone all race weekend. What’s going on, mate? Someone finally texting you back?—
Lando rolled his eyes, his grin widening. —You’re all so nosy.—
—Come on, we’re just curious, mate.— Charles chimed in, leaning forward with a playful glint in his eye. —Who’s got our boy smiling like that? I think we all deserve to know, considering it’s not the usual, mysterious “Instagram scrolling” face you make.—
—It’s not Instagram scrolling!— Lando protested, though his grin didn’t fade. —It’s... a friend, alright? Just a friend.—
—Yeah, right, just a friend.— George chuckled. —I’ve never seen you look at your phone that much unless it’s something... or someone special.—
Lando tried to suppress another smile, but it was no use. —It’s not what you think.—
Alex leaned back in his chair, folding his arms. —Oh, now you’ve definitely got us intrigued. Who is this ‘friend’ that’s got you grinning like a Cheshire cat?—
Lando’s gaze flickered between his friends, unsure whether to let them in on the secret. He’d been keeping things between him and Amelie quiet for a while now. They’d had their reasons, not wanting to make a spectacle of things. But after months of careful whispers, his patience was wearing thin.
—Alright, fine.— Lando finally relented, his shoulders sagging in defeat. —You wanna know? It’s Amelie.—
The room went quiet for a beat.
—Wait, what?— George blinked, clearly not sure if he’d heard right.
—Amelie? As in, Checo's Amelie?— Charles asked, his voice rising in disbelief.
Lando nodded, his smile softening. —Yeah, that Amelie. We’ve been... seeing each other for a while now.—
Alex’s face lit up, a grin spreading across his face. —No way! You two? That’s huge— he laughed, looking at George and Charles, both of whom were still processing the news.
—Hold up, hold up.— George raised a hand, his eyes narrowing in on Lando. —So you’re telling us... you’ve been texting her non-stop this whole time because... you two are together? For real?—
Lando’s grin became a little sheepish. —Yeah. We’ve been dating since November. Just... kept it low key.—
—That’s insane.— Charles shook his head, still not quite believing it. —You two were always so flirty, but I thought it was just... you know, part of the whole ‘we’re good friends’ act.—
—That’s the thing.— Lando leaned back, stretching his legs out. —We were friends first. But after... well, after everything that happened in the past, we kind of just picked things back up. It’s... it’s real now.—
—Real now?— George repeated, his voice laced with mock seriousness. —Mate, when did this start? Like, you two are actually an item? That’s mental. Are you seriously telling me Checo knows about this?—
Lando froze. His stomach twisted slightly at the mention of Checo. —Yeah, Checo knows. He was one of the first ones, actually.—
Alex raised an eyebrow. —Checo knows, and he’s not going to kill you for it? That’s... surprising.—
Lando laughed nervously, rubbing the back of his neck. —Well, to be fair, it was a bit awkward at first. He’s protective of her, you know? He basically raised her. But we’ve talked it through, and he’s supporting us now. Though... I think he still thinks I’m an idiot most of the time.—
—Well, it is Checo.— George smirked. —That guy’s gonna kill you when he realizes you two are more than just texting. I don’t care what he says. You know how he is with his sister-in-law.—
—Yeah, I know.— Lando chuckled, but there was a slight edge of nervousness in his voice. —I think the first time he found out we were actually together, he nearly gave me a heart attack. He... well, he wasn’t exactly thrilled at first. But we worked through it. Slowly. He’s definitely... not as keen on me as Amelie is.—
—You think?— George shot him a knowing look. —Honestly, mate, I would’ve been more worried if Checo was cool with it. The man’s like an older brother to her, so I can imagine the real conversation happened behind closed doors. What’s it like now? You guys get along better?—
Lando shifted uncomfortably, his thoughts turning to the many talks they’d had. He remembered the first time he’d seen Checo after he and Amelie started dating seriously, the intense conversation they’d shared in Bahrain. Checo had not been happy about it at first—understandably so, given how close he was to Amelie—but they had worked through it. Slowly. Still, there were moments when Lando could sense that Checo was silently judging him, always watching to see if he’d mess up. He wasn’t sure how to feel about that.
—Yeah, well... Checo’s already pretty aware of how much I care about her. He’s been cool about it, but it’s still kind of awkward. I can tell he’s trying to come to terms with it.—
The door to the lounge creaked open, and in walked Checo himself, his eyes immediately landing on Lando, then narrowing slightly in amusement.
—What’s all this?— Checo asked, a grin creeping up on his face as he took a seat near them. —Are you guys finally getting to the point where you’re gonna spill the beans about what Lando’s been so damn happy about?—
Lando froze for a second, a nervous chuckle escaping him. —I think we were just getting there, yeah.—
—Oh really?— Checo raised an eyebrow. —Finally going public with it, are we? About time. I was starting to think you’d keep this thing going in the shadows forever.—
Lando looked at Checo, realizing his tone wasn’t one of anger, but more of teasing. —I mean... we were trying to keep it low-key, you know? Didn’t want to make a big deal out of it. But I guess we’re pretty obvious now, huh?—
Checo shrugged, still grinning. —I figured it out a while ago. And honestly, it’s fine. You two look happy. I’m just waiting for you to make me an uncle. That’s the real kicker.—
Lando’s face turned bright red at the comment, and Alex burst out laughing.
—Mate, you’re really gonna start talking about kids now? Checo, slow down, we’re still in the “dating” phase.—
—Hey, it’s not my fault Lando’s the one moving faster than his car on a straightaway.— Checo teased, then turned to Lando with a wink. —But seriously, I’m happy for you, man. Just take care of her, alright? You know how I feel about her. If you hurt her, I’ll break your legs.—
Lando laughed nervously. —I get it. I’m not going anywhere. I’m in this for the long haul, I swear.—
Checo’s grin softened, and he gave Lando a nod. —Good. Just remember, I’m always watching. And don’t think for a second I won’t pull up if I need to give you a little “friendly” reminder.—
Lando raised his hands in mock surrender. —I hear you loud and clear. Promise I’m not messing this up. She’s everything.—
The group settled into a more comfortable silence, the teasing continuing in a more relaxed tone. But as Lando looked around at his friends, he couldn’t help but feel grateful. Not just for his podium, but for the people who supported him—especially Amelie, who was always there, cheering him on in the background, her text message popping up with little words of encouragement. It was the little things that made it all feel real. And no matter how much Checo might tease him, Lando was certain of one thing: he was exactly where he was meant to be.

"No one's getting vaccinated, but let's not even mention masks or air filters :) Low vax rates = ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ "
Not a bad article, it's just the lack of anything besides hoping millions of people will rush out for a vaccine right now that's driving me insane: If people don't want to vax 1. give them alternatives 2. remove barriers such as cost so they might change their minds easier 3. clean the air 4. inform people about the risk instead of changing the community levels again (looking at you, CDC).
By Brandelyn Clark
As COVID-19 is expected to surge this winter, communities across the Southwest face rising hospitalizations and new, resilient variants. Infection rates can be even more severe for marginalized populations in these states.
Limited health-care access and historically low vaccination rates amplify the burden on these communities and underscore long-standing health disparities. Following a summer surge, this new wave serves as a stark reminder of how these inequities continue to put vulnerable groups at greater risk.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is deploying mobile vaccine clinics to bring updated Moderna and Pfizer shots directly to high-risk areas.
Meanwhile, the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California (LCHC) continues to lead efforts on the ground through its network of “promotores” for Latino and Indigenous individuals. These community health workers help increase vaccination rates and provide essential health education.
Mar Velez, LCHS director of policy, spoke about the high stakes for families in these vulnerable areas.
“At the height of the pandemic, a lot of Latino and Indigenous workers were still going into work, still having to go in person. … Many of us are the sole provider of our families, and so we need to show up to work. It’s very much a similar situation now where folks are going into work, facing person-to-person interactions, and those infections are impacting us disproportionately,” Velez said. “We’re the ones that are out there on the front lines. The likelihood of us becoming infected is that much greater. We don’t have the luxury of staying at home.”
Several factors are expected to drive a winter surge in the Southwest, including the circulation of new variants like KP.2 and KP.3. Though more contagious, they are not particularly severe.
The week of August 10, the percentage of U.S. individuals testing positive for the virus reached its highest point since January 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Cases, emergency department visits and hospitalizations for COVID-19 are currently declining nationally, with a positivity rate of 3.8% in California, Arizona and Nevada on November 9.
The CDC’s epidemic trend modeling suggests that COVID-19 cases are likely increasing in California and Arizona. These trends are based on data from emergency department visits and provide insights into whether infections are growing or declining at the state level.
Though death rates are down, experts say the statistics are still alarming and that in marginalized communities, the illness never really left.
“Latino and Indigenous communities are still feeling the impacts and the consequences of the pandemic. … Those infections and hospitalizations that are happening now are impacting communities of color, Latino … and Indigenous communities disproportionately,” Velez said.
Health disparities in marginalized communities are rooted in systemic factors such as discrimination and unequal access to social resources such as housing, education and employment. These inequalities lead to higher rates of chronic diseases and limited health-care access, while cultural, language and trust barriers worsen the challenges.
To address these disparities, the county public health department’s Mobile Vaccine Team organizes pop-up clinics in areas of “high need, prioritizing seniors, people experiencing homelessness, and those without health insurance,” according to a media representative from the county.
Between October and December last year, the team facilitated 3,643 events and administered over 31,000 vaccine doses at no cost. This year, 338 free mobile vaccine events are scheduled, along with in-home appointments for residents who are unable to visit vaccination sites.
Additionally, the county offered back-to-school clinics in underserved areas to provide updated COVID-19 and flu shots.
Arcenio López is the executive director of the Mixteco/Indígena Community Organizing Project (MICOP). The organization provides essential services and works closely with marginalized communities, including migrant populations.
He highlighted the longstanding funding disparities community-based organizations face. These groups, which have long advocated for financial support for programs that serve marginalized communities, often see funding only in response to crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.
“For years, we’ve been saying there’s these organizations who need financial support to develop programs, to do these initiatives, to do outreach and education. Those CBOs (community-based organizations), nonprofit organizations and groups that are doing the work are always the last to receive funding,” López said. “When we (ask for) government grants, they say there is no money. But, interestingly, when COVID happened, everyone was trying to send money to organizations.”
Marginalized communities often struggle with distrust toward outsiders, particularly in health-care settings. This mistrust, heightened during the pandemic, created challenges for health initiatives. Many hesitated to engage with health services due to a history of exploitation and communication barriers.
López’s and Velez’s organizations address this by relying on trusted community members who share the same language and experiences as the people they serve.
These peer-to-peer models have proven effective in overcoming resistance and improving receptivity to health initiatives, particularly vaccinations, by cultivating trust in a way outsiders cannot.
A study by LA-based nonprofit Cedars-Sinai found that COVID-19 vaccinations significantly reduced disparities in disease incidence between low- and high-income communities in Los Angeles. Although lower-income communities initially had lower vaccination rates, the impact of vaccination was more significant and helped reduce income-related disparities.
“Everything we do at LCHC is informed by and requires community participation. … Without the participation of our communities, then it’s not as effective,” Velez said. “Policy work is never perfect, but it’s even less perfect if we don’t have impacted voices at the table. We cannot design policy solutions without the participation of our community because we often … get it wrong (or) we’re not able to address the issues that are most important to our communities. It is at the heart of what we do.”

i love it when a tv show has lows that are so low you're so ashamed to ever show it to anyone ever but then highs that melt your brain a bit, like, "good fucking god, this is genuinely such an astounding piece of craftmanship... my perception of the medium, and perhaps of myself, has been challenged/changed in 40 minutes" but you cant even express that to ppl without feeling like youre fucking deranged bc my god the lows .....

We need to talk about the worst thing about making AUs....
The fact that then when you inevitably think about crossovers you don't want the crossover with the canon you want it with your specific AU. Your brain worms, your circus, but THEN WHAT?
Oh, yeah, to understand this crossover you need to go read this entirely different fic/series? Girl help 😭 you can't do that

so as I'm sure y'all remember, I went insane when I found the montage of unreleased footage from the Gladiator DVD. I'm planning to do a full breakdown of all the new footage I discovered in there, but I just couldn't wait to share these because they are SO INTERESTING to me. it's like a four second clip of Maximus in his tent in Germania, featuring him doing something where he's shuffling some nutshells around
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
is he not just the cutest thing <3
but like??? I am so curious about what he's doing!!! it's probably a strategy technique, like him using the nutshells to represent different sections of his army and planning their attack. if not, maybe it's some kind of Roman version of solitaire?? I mean he's been on the road for years at this point, and how adorable would it be if this is his little nighttime unraveling technique, like a crossword puzzle or smth??
idk I just was awestruck by this little moment and wanted to share :)

can i get your thoughts on hana kurusu
Not daily/
Short answer? Abnormal
Long answer? We're making this a long post because I have a thought or 50 on Hana actually! Peep my fucking tags too I always say shit there.
I wouldn't have this many if she was just a whole side character but gege made her to not be a side character and was made to be clearly important which is why I'm always pissed about her.
She has an interesting concept that was executed by a MOTHERFUCKER who could could give less of a fuck about developing a woman if it dosent involve gege sucking the dick of some male character randomly. She was so interesting to me especially with her backfire only to be given "oh she dosent care about herself bc she's in love with an emotionally constipated dumbass that she met once and he could give less of a fuck about her." The only reason he cares somewhat is because of some half assed guilt that gege wrote in there because he already wasn't beating the "idk women" allegations.
She has such an interesting vibe about her of being a vessel that has control still other than Yuji but that's because he was born for that shit who gaf. Hana was not. How did she live? How did she get to that point.
I honestly think she would've been better off without having any relations with Megumi but most think so. I want to know more about her but I don't trust gege. I honestly think she should've been a blacksmith or something but idk. She's interesting it's just she has the misfortune of being written by Gege as a plot device and stepping stone for a character that barely even changed. Even Higaruma has more and Kusakabe and THAT COUPON BITCH HAS MORE THAN HER BUT THAT GOES FOR MOST IF NOT ALL THE WOMEN IN JJK EXCEPT MAKI FUCKKKK.

Hana doodle. She's neat.
