A Master Study featuring Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. In which Link hangs out with the two Zeldas post-game (Who do you think became the Queen of Hyrule?)

This was a difficult piece, but I'm happy with it!

Based on 'The Chess Players' by Jacques-Clément Wagrez (1902)

Original piece: "The Chess Players" by Jacques-Clément Wagrez (1846-1908).

The moment I saw this artwork I immediately thought of Zelda II. One of the women is wearing a medieval-esque red velvet dress, and she looks a lot like the design I made for the cursed princess Zelda!

I thought it would be very fitting to reimagine this artwork in a Zelda II context, so I went ahead with it! doubles as a master study and LoZ fanart.

I learnt a LOT from making this piece! Since I worked on it digitally, I got and made brushes that acted as close to traditional brushes, and I also worked on the entire piece in one layer. So whenever I made a mistake, I'd have to paint over. No return. But it was a big learning experience! Learnt more about rendering silk and velvet by observing how they are painted and blended in the original.

Here are some WIP shots! It took a long time to get to where it is now xD It was difficult to finally pen down the right proportions and placement. I probably should've done a grid copy, but I opted to just eyeing it out all the way through. It was... hard. (lesson learnt?)

I read that in a lot of older pieces, they are made in greyscale, then flat colours are overlaid on top. makes rendering much easier. and it truly has! I probably should’ve rendered the greyscale version even more. Since there were still a lot of mistakes that I had to rework and adjust while colouring.

Very fruitful experience overall, and I’m just happy to make a grand-scale Zelda II artwork xD I’ve never seen one so I made it!!!

STAR WARS: Eleventh Fleet AU

Hey-hey, I worked, caught a cold, got sick and that’s enough… …so, concept art for the Eleventh Fleet.

Ar'alani and Vah'nya's designs are fairly simple, but the problem with them in particular, and the Chiss in general, is their clothing and style. There are many official references, including those from Legends, but each artist still has his own vision regarding, for example, the shape of the fleet. Somewhere there is a strong homage to the design from the old canon, somewhere it was modernized, and in the latter they added the same “honor's chains”, which look a little strange on the laconic form. It seems to be in the Chiss style, but very impractical.

As a result, I am reworking the design of the expansion and defense fleet uniform, but more on that another time. Let's return to Ar'alani and Vah'nya.

At the beginning of the events of the "Eleventh Fleet", Senior General Ar'alani on his flagship "Vigilant" is increasingly confronted with the Grysks. A year will pass since her last meeting with Thrawn, when the invaders of the Ascendency space will openly attack the Chiss ships.

Such cat and mouse would continue for another year until the disappearance of another Night Dragon class war cruiser, subsequently leading to disaster in the heart of the Chiss Ascendancy. The Senior General will be one of the few superiors who, along with Ba'kif, can survive. Much of this will be down to Vanto and Ronan - unaccounted for variables in the Grysk's plans. The trust placed in Thrawn's "alien protégés" paid off in full.

The Senior General was often accompanied by Senior Navigator Vah'nya. "Vigilant" almost always accepted missions to search for missing navigators. Vah'nya not only guided the ship through the stars and darkness of outer space, but she was much better at rehabilitating rescued navigators, as well as leading the other navigators on the ship. Friendship with Eli played an important role in this.

Because of her "anomaly" as a Navigator who hasn't lost her powers into adulthood, many of the regulations and rules simply don't work for Vah'nya the way they do for other girls. And to be an “anomaly” for Sindikure is a very subtle walking on the edge of a charrik. And yet, to the dissatisfaction of some aristocrats and syndics, the girl manages to balance on it for quite a long time.

Because I’m not entirely sure that I’m right, but I really wanted to think about what this gorgeous grandpa would have looked like during the Thrawn. Ascendency Trilogy. And I also reworked his “chains” and other form elements quite a bit. And yes, I’m more than sure that Thrawn adopted Ba'kif’s “style” in his time.

A Best Enemies AO3 Analysis Part 1

Hello! I had the burning urge to put together some rough stats around Thoschei fanfiction on AO3. As I had problems scraping the data, most of this analysis is pulled from the aggregations on AO3's tagged works page. If I find a better way to extract this from AO3 I'll likely come back and do something more comprehensive!

(This analysis is not statistically robust and may be subject to errors. Please keep in mind this is just for fun!)

To start with, what are the top pairings in the "The Doctor/The Master" tag on AO3?

Thirteen/Dhawan!Master sits at the top of the list, occupying 23% of all Doctor/Master content on AO3.

The first seven pairings listed here make up 83% of all Doctor/Master fics, the remaining Other category comprising of all possible Doctor x Master combinations make up 27%. *

What are the ratings of the top pairings?

Five/Ainley!Master stand as the raunchiest pairing in the list, with 34% of all Five/Master fanfictions falling under the Explicit category.

How do the top pairings compare over time?

There were just 53 fanfics completed in 2008 on AO3. While fanfic volumes increased in line with the growing popularity of AO3, the reappearances of a certain fictional villain resulted in spikes in publication.

Though the global pandemic definitely had an impact on AO3 activity during 2020, this also coincided with the introduction of a pairing that saw a meteoric rise in fanfiction. Can you guess which one?

Thirteen/Dhawan!Master saw 615 fanfictions during 2020. For comparison, that's more than the total amount of Doctor X Master fanfiction published in 2018 and 2019 combined!

3 years ago today, I started playing SWTOR with this young Padawan named Maverik'a, unaware of the journey ahead of us. I find little Machete being happy over bread baking to be so endearing, especially because I can imagine a world in which helping with baking was one of the few childhood joys he had (due to the lack of art of him happy as a pup), and then remembering the art you did months back of modern Machete making a souffle, I can see reincarnated Machete being drawn towards baking in his free time due to those residual feelings from his past life.

I keep seeing people talking and wondering why the siren told Odysseus the truth about Scylla when she was planning to kill him anyway, but like—it makes sense to me?

Think about it from the siren’s perspective: she’s got this dude she’s trying to lure into the water so she can drown and eat him, he’s being extremely difficult (saying he’s afraid of the water) and resisting her song, he says he’ll get in the water if she just answers a question or two—

So she’s thinking, fine, I’ll answer his questions and then get this over with. It doesn’t matter what the question is, and it’s awfully convenient for her that it’s one she knows the answer to.

She has no reason to lie to him. As far she’s concerned, he’s going to die in a matter of minutes anyways, lying to him would be utterly pointless. Also, it’s a lot harder to come up with a lie on the spot than it is to tell the truth.

PLUS, she doesn’t know who Odysseus is! She doesn’t know that he has reputation for being a lying schemer and master planner!! She, AGAIN, has every reason to believe that he’s going to be dead very soon!

All she has to do is answer his question and he’ll get in the water. Why would she think to lie?
